erez de la Frontera es la quinta ciudad de Andalucía en número de habitantes y el segundo término municipal más extenso de España. Se localiza al sur de Andalucía y provincia de Cádiz, con un clima agradable y suave, un paisaje de colinas sembradas de viñedos que nos llevan al mar, una costa de extensas playas de arena blanca. Un territorio rico en historia, en patrimonio y recursos naturales.

Con una antigüedad que se remonta a la época de los fenicios, Jerez es mundialmente conocida por sus vinos, por la crianza del caballo cartujano, por ser la cuna del arte Flamenco, declarado Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad, y por los deportes del motor, por lo que ha sido denominada Capital Mundial del Motor 2015-2017.

Dating back to Phoenician times Jerez is known throughout the world for its sherry wines, for breeding Carthusian horses, as the birthplace of Flamenco, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and motor sport, for which it has been named World Motorcycle Capital 2015-2017.

Jerez is close to Sanlúcar de Barrameda, at the mouth of the river Guadalquivir, where we find the Doñana Nature Reserve.

Its municipal area includes the Alcornocales Nature Park, and from the city can be seen the mountains of the Sierra de Cádiz and the Sierra de Grazalema Nature Park, a route dotted with white villages full of history and beauty.

La ciudad cuenta con una red de transporte intermodal e infraestructuras modernas, que la hacen estar bien comunicada con una aeropuerto internacional, en el que operan grandes compañías. Jerez is equipped with an intermodal transport network and modern infrastructures connecting with an international airport from which major airlines operate. A railway station located in the city centre and offers multiple connections to numerous cities and capitals, including three high-speed train connections. Jerez es el centro de la comarca del Marco de Jerez, conformada por 9 municipios que nos invitan a recorrer La Ruta del Vino y Brandy del Marco de Jerez, ruta que discurre desde las extensas playas de la costa de Cádiz, la campiña y sus colinas cubiertas de verdes viñedos, y las marismas del río Guadalquivir. The Sherry Regulating Council, which dates from 1935 and is the oldest in Spain, protects the Denomination of Origin of Sherry Wine and Vinegar produced in Jerez as well as the Specific Denomination Brandy de Jerez, wines and brandy with over 3,000 years of collective history. Such a deep-rooted wine-growing culture led to Jerez being named “European Wine City 2014”

l caballo es una de las señas de identidad de Jerez de la Frontera. Jerez es la ciudad española en donde este noble animal goza de un mayor prestigio. Son numerosas las ganaderías, yeguadas, centros de visitas y centros ecuestres que se afanan en la enseñanza, en la crianza y selección equina, donde la figura del caballo adquiere el carácter de indiscutible protagonista en las tradiciones festivas, la más espectacular que se celebra todos los años, la Feria del Caballo, declarada de INTERÉS TURÍSTICO INTERNACIONAL. Jerez le ofrece una amplia variedad de recursos y servicios turísticos relacionados con el mundo ecuestre, tanto para los amantes del caballo que desean conocerlo con más profundidad, como para aquellos aficionados que desean practicar la equitación en diferentes actividades y disciplinas hípicas.

Para poder disfrutar del caballo y espectáculos únicos, Jerez cuenta con instituciones como la Fundación Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, que ofrece su espectáculo ‘Cómo Bailan los Caballos Andaluces’.

he horse is one of the identifying symbols of Jerez de la Frontera, the Spanish city where this noble animal is held in the highest esteem.

There are numerous stud farms, riding stables, visitor centres and equestrian centres that are committed to the training, breeding and selection of horses; a city where the figure of the horse acquires an unarguable prominence in all its traditional festivities, the most spectacular of which takes place every year, the Horse Fair, declared of International Tourist Interest.

In order to facilitate enjoyment of the horse and its unique equestrian exhibitions, Jerez boasts institutions such as the Royal Andalusian School of the Equestrian Art Foundation, performing its show “How the Andalusian Horses Dance”. Other dedicated facilities include the Driving Museum and the Equestrian Art Museum.

The Yeguada de La Cartuja-Hierro del Bocado, the largest Carthusian horse stud farm in the world, organises equestrian exhibitions and competitions as well as the show “A Campo Abierto” performed in open countryside and inspired by the world of the horse and the fighting bull.

‘La cuna del flamenco’

La ciudad cuenta con la Cátedra de Flamencología y Estudios Folclóricos Andaluces, en el Centro Andaluz de Flamenco que se encuentra ubicado en el Palacio de Pemartín, en pleno casco histórico de la ciudad.

El Festival de Jerez, que se desarrolla este año del 24 de febrero al 11 de marzo, o la Fiesta de la Bulería, que tras su exitosa aceptación del año pasado volverá a prolongarse durante una semana, son citas obligadas para todos aquellos amantes del flamenco más puro.

El Ayuntamiento de Jerez está dando un fuerte impulso al flamenco como elemento cultural dinamizador de la ciudad así durante todo el año se prolongan distintos ciclos que programan diversas actividades relacionadas

La figura de Lola Flores, artista jerezana universalmente conocida, está protagonizando un ciclo de actividades que se están prolongando por espacio de un año y que tendrá un momento especial con la dedicación a ‘La Faraona’ de la Feria del Caballo 2017.

‘The birthplace of flamenco’

J

erez is considered by many as the birthplace of flamenco, with the distinctive Jerezano bulería.

The whole city exudes art from every pore but there are barrios with special enchantment, such as San Miguel, Santiago or La Asunción - home of the great families of flamenco song. Artists such as Lola Flores, José Mercé and Moraíto have taken the flamenco of Jerez all over Spain and around the world.

Jerez has numerous peña flamenco clubs where the art can be enjoyed at any of the many events and activities they organise throughout the year. Visitors can also enjoy performances at the flamenco tablaos such as ‘Puro Arte’, ‘La Taberna Flamenca’ and ‘La Guarida del Ángel’ or in tabanco sherry bars such as ‘El Pasaje’.

The city also boasts the Cátedra de Flamencología y Estudios Folclóricos Andaluces, at the Andalusian Flamenco Centre located in the Pemartín Palace in the heart of its historic centre.

The Jerez Festival, which takes place this year from February 24th to March 11th, or the Bulería Festival, which given the great success of last year will return for one week, are events not to be missed by all those enthusiasts of Flamenco in its purest form.

Jerez Town Council is providing a strong impetus to flamenco as a revitalising cultural element of the city and will therefore be organising different cycles throughout the year, offering a range of diverse activities related to flamenco in collaboration with the peñas, local associations and the Andalusian Flamenco Centre. The highlight of these different cycles will be the celebration of International Flamenco Day on November 16th.

The figure of Lola Flores, Jerez born artist of international fame, will be the protagonist of a cycle of events programmed to take place throughout the year and a special moment with the dedication of the Horse Fair 2017 to “La Faraona”.

Productos frescos entre los que destacan los pescados y mariscos de la Bahía de Cádiz, los aceites, carnes, hortalizas y frutas de la campiña y los quesos y embutidos de la Sierra de Cádiz, y que junto a la versatilidad de los Vinos de Jerez cautiva a los paladares más exigentes y a prestigiosos cocineros de todo el mundo.

Disfrutar de exquisitas creaciones gastronómicas resulta aún más atractivo al ir de la mano de prestigiosos restaurantes, bares de vinos, los típicos tabancos, y las terrazas que serpentean la ciudad. Prepárate para un recorrido tan sorprendente como delicioso.

Entre los platos típicos encontramos la berza jerezana, riñones al jerez, cola de toro, chicharrones, quesos, o el plato típico de los viñadores ‘el ajo de viña’ que se sirve en los meses de otoño e invierno junto al vino joven, o el tocino de cielo y el Pedro Ximénez como delicatessen en los postres.

El ciclo festivo de Jerez comprende citas en las que la enogastronomía son el máximo exponente, como pueden ser: la Feria del Caballo que se celebra del 13 al 20 de mayo 2017, las Fiestas de la Vendimia que se celebran a principios del mes de septiembre, ambas citas Declaradas de Interés Turístico Internacional. Eventos como el Festival Tío Pepe del 10 al 14 agosto 2017, el Día Europeo del Enoturismo que se celebra del 6 al 12 de noviembre de 2017, el festival gastronómico alrededor del Vino de Jerez ‘Copa Jerez’ que se celebra en el mes de junio de 2017, la muestra de Vinos de Jerez ‘De Copa en Copa’ y ‘Catas Magistrales’ en el mes de septiembre, o el Salón Internacional de Vinos Nobles - Vinoble, que se celebra con carácter bienal.

erez de la Frontera offers an exquisite range of local cuisine thanks to fresh local produce, fruit of geographic diversity, an excellent climate and the historic legacy left by the different cultures that have populated the region over the centuries, all of which is reflected in a gastronomic diversity of tastes and aromas which, accompanied by a range of sherry wines of different varieties, combine to produce a varied and exquisite gastronomic proposal.

Fresh local produce includes fish and shellfish from the nearby Bay of Cádiz, olive oil, meat, fruit and vegetables from the surrounding countryside, cheese and charcuterie from the Sierra de Cádiz, which when combined with the versatility of Sherry wines serve to captivate the most demanding of palates and impress the most prestigious chefs from around the world.

Enjoying these exquisite gastronomic creations is even more attractive at the hand of prestigious restaurants, wine bars and typical tabanco sherry bars, but not forgetting the outdoor terraces of the bars and cafés that populate the city centre. Be prepared to follow an itinerary as surprising as it is delicious.

Amongst the typical local dishes we find berza jerezana, kidneys in sherry sauce, bull’s tail, pork scratchings, cheese or “ajo de la viña” the traditional dish of the grape pickers served in the autumn and winter months accompanied by the first must of the year, with local “tocino de cielo” and Pedro Ximenez sherry as a perfect dessert.

The festive cycle in Jerez includes events in which wine and food are the main feature, as in the case of the Horse Fair celebrated from May 13th to 20th in 2017, the Grape Harvest Festival which takes place at the beginning of September, both events declared to be of International Tourist Interest. Events such as European Wine Tourism Day, 6th to 12th of November 2017 and the gastronomy fair taking place around the “Sherry Cup” held in the month of June 2017, the sherry exhibition “From Glass to Glass” and “Masterclass Tastings” in the month of September, or Vinoble - the International Fair of Sweet and Fortified Wines held every two years.

Actividades ecuestres, atltetismo, golf, trekking, carreras de galgos, motor, y más de 40 kilómetros de Carril Bici que recorren las principales arterias de la ciudad, hacen de Jerez el lugar ideal para los amantes del turismo deportivo, activo y de naturaleza.

he name of Jerez is associated at an international level with its motor racing circuit which hosts several national and international competitions throughout the year, the most outstanding being the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix which in 2017 takes place from the 5th to the 7th of May. Enthusiasts and visitors can also participate in daily guided-tours of the Racing Circuit and Motor Museum.

Jerez also has modern sporting facilities such as the Chapin Sports Complex providing a wide range of sporting activities and two extraordinary 18-hole golf courses, Sherry Golf and Barceló Montecastillo Golf Resort, which includes the High Performance Sports Centre ideal for football and elite sports training sessions.

The historic centre of the city has been declared of Cultural Interest with the denomination Historic-Artistic Heritage Site.

Uno de los monumentos que más distingue esta suma de culturas es el Conjunto Monumental Alcázar de Jerez, en el que se puede visitar la mezquita, baños árabes, molino de aceite, torre octogonal, pabellón real, patio de armas, jardines, huerto, aljibe y su zona arqueológica. Igualmente, con una entrada combinada se pueden visitar los Claustros de Santo Domingo, otra de las joyas arquitectónicas de la ciudad, y el Museo Arqueológico, ubicado en pleno centro histórico y que nos muestra la historia de Jerez y su comarca.

El rico patrimonio artístico incluye monumentos religiosos como la Catedral de San Salvador, San Dionisio, la Cartuja de Santa María de la Defensión, la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, las iglesias de San Miguel, San Mateo, San Lucas, San Juan de los Caballeros, San Juan de Letrán, Las Angustias o el convento de Santo Domingo. Jerez fue considerado ‘Ciudad de los Conventos’ y, aún conserva algunas congregaciones de clausura.

The rich artistic heritage includes religious buildings such as San Salvador Cathedral, San Dionisio, the Santa María de la Defensión Carthusian Monastery, the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Merced, the churches of San Miguel, San Mateo, San Lucas, San Juan de los Caballeros, San Juan de Letrán and Las Angustias or the convent of Santo Domingo. Jerez was once considered the “City of Convents” and to this day still conserves some enclosed congregations.

The Municipal Archaeological Museum is one of the most important in the province, located in the beautiful Plaza del Mercado square beside the Riquelme Palace and close to Bodegas Tradición which also hosts the impressive Joaquín Rivero collection of Spanish Painting in its picture gallery, a true hidden gem with paintings from the 15th to the 20th century and works by great masters of Spanish painting such as Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, Murillo and Romero de Torres.

‘Un extenso término municipal natural’

La naturaleza está muy presente debido a su extenso término municipal, el segundo más grande de España, que incluye los Montes de Propios del Parque Natural de los Alcornocales y en los que habitan especies animales singulares, algunas en peligro de extinción. Este espacio natural se puede visitar practicando senderismo o disfrutando de rutas en todoterreno, además permite pernoctar en el alojamiento rural Cortijo de Rojitán. Igualmente cuenta con numerosas lagunas como la Laguna de Medina, las lagunas de Las Canteras y El Tejón, que son reservas naturales, así como la laguna de Torrox y la de los Tollos.

También cuenta con numerosos parques y zonas arboladas como el parque de Las Aguilillas o La Suara.

Jerez nos presenta un paisaje de colinas entre las vegas de los ríos Guadalquivir y Guadalete, cercana a la Bahía de Cádiz y su costa formada por las extensas playas de El Puerto de Santa María, Chipiona, Rota, Chiclana, El Palmar, Los Caños de Meca, Zahara de los Atunes o Tarifa.

Desde la ciudad se divisa la Sierra de Cádiz, y el Parque Natural Sierra de Grazalema donde se sitúa el punto más alto de la provincia con una altura de 1.654 metros.

El río Guadalete discurre junto a la ciudad, y nos expone su historia y riqueza en el Centro Turístico de Interpretación Ceret. La cercana Sanlúcar de Barrameda donde desemboca el río Guadalquivir, nos da paso al Parque Nacional de Doñana, espacio Natural considerado como una de las zonas naturales protegidas más importantes de Europa, y que hace posible una experiencia única navegando por el río Guadalquivir y posteriormente adentrarse en el Parque.

El Zoobotánico ‘Alberto Durán’ es otro de los equipamientos naturales privilegiados de la ciudad. Con un jardín botánico que abarca más de 150 especies y una colección zoológica que cuenta con más de mil animales pertenecientes a 200 especies diferentes de los cinco continentes, el Zoobotánico es un gran atractivo para el visitante. Además de su extensa colección botánica y zoológica, el Zoo cumple una función educadora parti-

From the city itself we can see the Sierra de Cádiz and the Sierra de Grazalema Nature Park where we find the highest point in the province at 1,654 metres.

‘An extensive natural municipal area’

J

erez possesses numerous natural enclaves perfect for those who enjoy nature and wish to participate in active tourism. Nature is ever present given the extensive municipal area surrounding the city, the second most extensive in Spain and which includes the Montes de Propios of the Alcornocales Nature Park inhabited by unique species of animals, some of which are in danger of extinction. This natural space can be visited to practice trekking or enjoy routes in 4x4 vehicles, as well as offering the possibility to spend the night in rural accommodation such as the Cortijo de Rojitán. It also possesses numerous lakes such as Laguna de Medina, Las Canteras and El Tejón, which are nature reserves, or the Laguna de Torrox and Los Tollos. Jerez also has several parks and woodlands such as Las Aguilillas Park or La Suara.

The river Guadalete flows alongside the city and its history is explained at the Ceret Tourist Information Centre. Nearby Sanlúcar de Barrameda where the river Guadalquivir flows into the sea gives way to the Doñana Nature Reserve, considered one of the most important protected natural zones in Europe and which offers the unique experience of sailing down the river Guadalquivir to then enter the Reserve.

Jerez possesses an extensive range of natural resources and provides a privileged setting in which to enjoy its natural surroundings.

The ‘Alberto Durán’ Zoo and Botanical Gardens is yet another of the privileged natural spaces to be found in the city. The botanical garden is home to over 150 different species and the zoo to over one thousand animals belonging to 200 species from all five continents, the Zoo and Botanical Garden is a great attraction for visitors. In addition to its extensive botanical and zoological collection, Jerez Zoo also carries out an educational role and participates in important projects concerning the conservation of endangered species.

‘With a taste all of its own’

aballo, vino, flamenco, un rico patrimonio histórico-artístico, una singular y variada gastronomía, un enclave privilegiado hacen de Jerez una ciudad sumamente atractiva para el visitante. A estos atractivos hay que sumar un ciclo festivo especial, con singulares señas de identidad como la Feria del Caballo, las Fiestas de la Vendimia o la forma tan especial de vivir la Navidad, con una programación amplia que termina con la Cabalgata de Reyes.

La Feria del Caballo, que en esta edición de 2017 se celebrará del 13 al 20 de mayo, está declarada de interés turístico internacional por la Secretaria de Estado de Turismo y Comercio, perteneciente al Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio de España. En esta edición, y debido al éxito del año pasado, la Feria volverá a celebrarse de sábado a sábado en una iniciativa que ha contado con un gran respaldo tanto de los propios jerezanos como de los visitantes y cuya idea ha sido exportada a otras ciudades como Sevilla. Considerada una de las mejores Ferias de Andalucía su principal atractivo es el Paseo de Caballos y de Enganches así como la accesibilidad de sus casetas, hermosamente adornadas.

Las Fiestas de la Vendimia, que desde 2015 están declaradas de Interés Turístico de Andalucía, engloban una seria de actividades que durante 15 días, y con el nacimiento del vino como temática, ofrece a jerezanos y visitantes una amplia oferta de actos culturales de las más variadas temáticas. Las Fiestas, las más antiguas de España ya que se celebran desde 1948, se celebran siempre en el mes de septiembre coincidiendo con la vendimia y el nacimiento del nuevo mosto, representado en la tradicional Pisa de la Uva que se celebra en el reducto catedralicio.

La Navidad es otro ciclo festivo con ‘sabor propio’ en Jerez, sin duda la ciudad ha sabido impregnar de un carácter propio a este ciclo festivo. Las tradicionales zambombas, declaradas Bien de Interés Cultural Inmaterial, los belenes, la rica gastronomía y un espectacular alumbrado hacen de estas fechas navideñas un momento ideal para que los visitantes vengan a la ciudad.

orses, sherry, flamenco, a rich historical and artistic heritage, unique and varied cuisine and a privileged location all make Jerez an immensely attractive place to visit. To these attractions must be added our special festive cycles featuring unique identifying symbols of Jerez as do the Horse Fair and the Grape Harvest Festival or the very special way in which we celebrate Christmas with a full programme of events culminating with the Three Kings’ Parade in January.

The Horse Fair will be held from May 13th to 20th in 2017 and has been declared of international tourist interest by the Secretary of State for Tourism and Commerce under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce of Spain. This year’s edition of the Fair, given the great success of the previous year, will once again be held from Saturday to Saturday, an initiative that has received the overwhelming support of both local people and visitors alike and the concept of which has since been exported to other cities such as Seville. Considered one of the best fairs in Andalusia, its main attraction is the Horse and Horse Carriage Parade together with its beautifully decorated casetas, open to all who wish to enter.

The Grape Harvest Festival, declared of Andalusian Tourist Interest in 2015, includes a full programme of events that lasts for fifteen days and with the new wine of the year as its central theme offers locals and visitors alike a wide range of cultural activities of the most varied kind. The Festival, the oldest in Spain dating as it does from 1948, is always held in the month of September to coincide with the grape harvest and the birth of the new must, the latter represented by the traditional Treading of the Grapes ceremony which takes place by the cathedral steps.

Christmas provides another festive season with that “special taste” of Jerez and without doubt the city has been able to stamp its own character on the season. The traditional zambombas, declared an Asset of Intangible Cultural Interest, nativity scenes, rich local cuisine and spectacular Christmas lights make it an ideal time to visit the city.
