In 2017, Sea Otter Europe arrived in Girona and the Costa Brava with an ambitious goal: to bring the spirit of the Sea Otter Classic—the major cycling festival founded in California in the 1990s—to Europe. From the outset, the event brought together an exhibition area, competitions, sporting events, activities and a meeting point for brands, professionals and cycling enthusiasts. That first edition already demonstrated the project’s potential, with 20,000 square metres of exhibition space, 350 brands and 30,000 visitors from 12 different nationalities. By last year’s edition, the festival had more than doubled its exhibition area, welcomed 74,000 visitors, featured 507 brands and attracted 6,124 participants in its sporting events, representing 114 nationalities. But the story of Sea Otter Europe is about much more than numbers. Over the past ten editions, the festival has become a meeting point for the entire cycling ecosystem. Industry leaders, professional and amateur cyclists, distributors, retailers, institutions, families and cycling enthusiasts have all found what they are looking for here.

These ten years have coincided with a period of major change in the cycling world. New disciplines have become established, while the bicycle has gained increasing importance not only as a sporting tool, but also as a means of tourism, healthy living and sustainable mobility. Sea Otter Europe has successfully adapted to these changes by expanding its family activities, demonstration areas, mobility initiatives, professional content and services for businesses. The festival has also overcome one of the most challenging periods in recent history. The pandemic disrupted both the sporting and trade fair sectors, creating significant opportunities but also major imbalances and risks for the bicycle industry. While other events lost momentum or disappeared altogether, Sea Otter Europe continued to move forward thanks to the strength of its project, the commitment of brands, institutions, sponsors and athletes, and the loyalty of its visitors.
