Braga – Passado, Presente e Futuro

Braga é uma cidade viva e enérgica, plena de contrastes e em constante renovação. Com mais de dois mil anos de história, o tempo não cristaliza nesta que é uma das cidades mais jovens da Europa. A antiguidade confere-lhe charme e autenticidade que se expressam nos costumes religiosos, nas tradições mais ancestrais e na hospitalidade dos seus habitantes.

A fundação de Braga é atribuída aos romanos, que chegaram em 16 a. C. e que estabeleceram a capital da Gallaecia. Outrora centro da Cristandade na Península Ibérica, aqui encontramos a catedral mais antiga do país, a construção que atualmente conhecemos teve início no ano de 1070, sendo anterior à nacionalidade. Aí estão sepultados os Condes Portucalenses D. Henrique e Dona Teresa, pais de D. Afonso Henriques, o primeiro rei de Portugal.

O monumento mais famoso é o Santuário do Bom Jesus, que em 2018 foi declarado Património Mundial da Unesco. Este monte santo é constituído por uma escadaria monumental com perto de 600 degraus, que seguindo os passos da Via Sacra forma um complexo de caráter religioso em comunhão com a natureza envolvente. O funicular do Bom Jesus foi o primeiro a ser construído na Península Ibérica (1882) e é atualmente o mais antigo, em serviço, no mundo a circular com um sistema de contrapeso de água.

Sempre de olhos postos no futuro, Braga distingue-se na área da investigação, albergando um dos polos universitários do país que já fazem parte dos rankings internacionais e, também, o Laboratório Ibérico Internacional de Nanotecnologia.

Braga é, ainda, Cidade Criativa da UNESCO no domínio das Media Arts, resultado de um esforço concertado entre vários sectores que refletem a sua realidade atual enquanto cidade tecnológica. Palco de grandes eventos, o Altice Forum Braga destaca-se como a segunda maior sala de espetáculos do país.

Em Braga, o passado comunga com a inovação, o empreendedorismo alia-se à criatividade, a cultura e o entretenimento fervilham a cada instante, a gastronomia mantém a tradição e também se reinventa e o espírito jovem e guerreiro das suas gentes é contagiante.

Braga - Past, Present and Future Braga is a vibrant and dynamic city, full of contrasts and in constant renewal. With over two thousand years of history, time does not crystallize in what is one of the youngest cities in Europe. Antiquity gives it charm and authenticity expressed in the religious customs, the most ancient traditions and the hospitality of its inhabitants.

The Romans who arrived in 16 a. C. and who established the capital of Gallaecia founded Braga. Once the centre of Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula, here we find the oldest cathedral in the country and the construction we currently know began in the year 1070, preceding the nationality. Here are buried the Portucalenses Count D. Henrique and Dona Teresa, parents of D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal.

Our most famous monument is the Bom Jesus Sanctuary, which in 2018 was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. This holy place has a monumental staircase with about 600 steps; following the Via Crucis, we may discover a religious complex in communion with the surrounding nature. The Bom Jesus funicular was the first built on the Iberian Peninsula (1882) and is currently the oldest in service in the world that works with a water balance system.

Always regarding the future, Braga distinguishes itself in the area of investigation, hosting one of the country's university centres that are already part of the international rankings and the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory.

Braga is also UNESCO Creative City in the field of Media Arts, the result of a concerted effort between various sectors that reflect its current reality as a technological city. Stage of major events, the Altice Forum Braga stands out as the second largest concert hall in the country.

Legendary Cuisine Braga — the Heart of Minho, as the the locals call it — is no exception, with a rich cuisine, seasoned by years of experience that delight visitors.

And there are many examples, such as the famous Caldo Verde, considered one of Portugal's seven culinary wonders, Braga’s Codfish, the traditional Papas de Sarrabulho and the centuries-old pudding Abade de Priscos.

Green is its predominant color due to its location and surrounding landscape. Braga is surrounded by lush green with its river beaches, sports parks, leisure areas and the largest network of pedestrian routes.
