- Què és el concepte d’overfitting?

- I would like to know your perspective on the evolution of artificial intelligence in recent years, especially in social networks.

- The integration of artificial intelligence in social media has been continuous since around 2012 or 2013. It had a notable boost when Instagram started using Machine Learning in its algorithms.

- Could you highlight some of the most significant changes?

- A major change has been the application of AI in TikTok filters. However, the most important change was the launch of Chat GPT in November 2022, which marked a turning point in social media content generation.

- How has people’s interaction on social networks evolved since the arrival of AI?

- There is an exponential growth of microinfluencers and a considerable increase in the reach of small and medium-sized accounts. More content is expected to be published on social media in the next 2 years than in the last 15 years.

- What risks and regulations are emerging with this outbreak of AI?

- The risks and regulations that emerge with this explosion of AI are highly relevant. First, there is the issue of privacy, a concern shared both by the companies that run social networks and by governments and institutions themselves. The use of personal or confidential data through artificial intelligence tools poses a serious threat that must be taken seriously.

On the other hand, there is the question of copyright. Now, with the creation of AIgenerated content, such as the images created by Midjourney, Runway or GPT, a question arises: who has the right to protect such content and how it can be properly exploited. In addition, modifications of original works and AI-generated voice alterations present significant legal challenges, as there is currently no clear record for artificially generated voices. These issues require meticulous legal attention in the coming years.

In this context, approaches such as the certification of content created by artificial intelligence, as mentioned in the EU and in the Artificial Intelligence Act, are being discussed. However, there is also a movement calling for certification of humangenerated content as a countermeasure to problems such as overfitting. Regulation of these aspects becomes a key concern in the age of AI.

- What is the concept of overfitting?

- Overfitting occurs when an AI generates content that is excessively similar to the training data. A relevant case was when the New York Times sued GPT for producing content similar to its own because GPT had been trained on Times data. Detecting and regulating overfitting is crucial to ensure the originality and legality of AI-generated content.

- What is the role of guidelines in combating legal problems in music, as in the case of Bad Bunny?

- The current situation presents a unique challenge. For example, the guidelines can do little to prevent the creation of a new work based on an existing song. This is not exactly plagiarism, but the creation of something new. An example is Frank Sinatra’s voice used in a Dua Lipa song, with a background sound of a vinyl record from the 1970s. Until our voices and images are certified and registered to prevent their use in future modifications, this risk exists.

- Is it like a legal vacuum?

- Yes, these are legal vacuums that are unlikely to be addressed until prominent figures such as Bad Bunny or Dua Lipa are affected. The jurisprudence that will be established in these years will lay the groundwork for the future.

- Speaking of the future, what new applications or developments do you think will have a significant impact?

- I believe voice cloning and 3D avatar generation will be revolutionary. Tools like Synthesia, Colossian and HeyGen are leading the field. They cannot only create avatars that speak with text provided, but also clone a person to generate their avatar. These avatars, combined with a cloned voice, could be used in meetings or conferences, radically changing the way we interact.

- What about virtual or augmented reality applications?

- Right now, you can train a GPT with your response patterns, connect it with voice cloning technologies and generate a realtime avatar for conferences or meetings. This is going to have a huge business and cultural impact. The global digital economy and business models are about to undergo disruptive changes because these technologies are going to change economic patterns and business models.

- It seems that it is now possible to set up a company almost entirely with AI commands.

- That’s right. In fact, it is possible to create a complete application, such as a food delivery APP, including the marketing plan, business plan, website, download landing page, and even the code for the application in JSON, all in a matter of minutes.

- To achieve this, is an advanced knowledge needed?

It is expected that in the next two years more content will be published on social networks than in the last 15 years.”

- Really, it is more about knowing and combining the right tools. For example, in a recent course we used Agent GPT, a free GPT agent. These agents use GPT technology to carry out specific missions rather than simply following instructions. So, you can ask the AI to create a marketing plan to develop an APP with a limited budget and a high turnover target. Then, the AI generates the necessary programmes and follows a sequence of tasks until the set target is reached.

- For those of us who are not tech-savvy, where can we learn about artificial intelligence and keep up to date without feeling overwhelmed?

- Starting to understand artificial intelligence can be overwhelming. A good way to start is with Chat GPT, as it focuses only on generating text, which is easier to process mentally. I recommend exploring the OpenAI platform, where there are resources for learning how to design prompts. On my website, chat. socialmedia.com, I offer a basic ten-hour video course for beginners. In terms of social networking, LinkedIn is an excellent source for the most important news. What appears on LinkedIn usually goes to TikTok and finally to Instagram. The most scientific and in-depth analysis is found on LinkedIn, while on TikTok and Instagram the information is presented in a more accessible and simplified form.

- What about TikTok compared to Instagram in terms of AI integration?

- TikTok has integrated artificial intelligence in a way that allows people to use it more actively, as in the case of filters. On the other hand, in general Instagram uses AI to improve its own platform and keep users hooked. TikTok is seeing an increase in automatically generated accounts that create content daily using AI.

- Quina ha estat la tendència en les teves àrees d’enfocament, especialment en els últims mesos amb l’auge de la IA?

- La curiositat i l’interès en la intel·ligència artificial han crescut notablement des de l’explosió de ChatGPT al novembre. El major creixement en publicacions i participació l’he vist en TikTok des d’abril-maig, amb un increment en aplicacions i formacions de IA. Octubre va ser un mes clau per al creixement de la integració de programes de IA en institucions educatives i escoles de negocis. Sense dubte, 2024 està marcant un punt d’inflexió en el camp de la IA.

- Per a aquells que no estem molt familiaritzats amb la IA, on podem buscar informació i com podem adaptar-nos?

- La clau està en perdre la por a la IA i reconèixer la seva versatilitat. La IA no és exclusiva del màrqueting, encara que aquest sector l’hagi adoptat ràpidament. Es pot aplicar en una àmplia gamma d’activitats, des de la decoració de la llar fins al disseny de motors o la implementació de sistemes de facturació automàtica. És fonamental començar a usar eines de IA per familiaritzar-se amb elles. Eines com GPT, Johnny, Runway, i Elevenlabs són accessibles i permeten experimentar amb la tecnologia. El desafiament no resideix tant en l'ús de la IA, sinó en com integrar-la efectivament en el nostre dia a dia i en el nostre treball. El 2023 va ser un any de descobriment quant al que la IA pot fer, i el 2024 és l'any per aprendre a aplicar-la de manera que beneficiï les nostres carreres i negocis.

- Existeix la por de que la IA pugui reemplaçar llocs de treball, podria passar amb la figura del periodista?

- Com a experiodista, comprenc aquesta preocupació. No obstant això, crec que no serem reemplaçats per la IA, sinó per persones que saben com utilitzar-la eficientment. - No és tant una qüestió d’edat com d’actitud. Conec col·legues de 60 i tants anys que són excel·lents en l’ús de IA, com Pepe Villar i Xavier Mitjana, que és una eminència a Espanya. D’altra banda, alguns joves de 15 anys gairebé no han fet servir GPT. Així que, més que una qüestió d’edat, és una qüestió d’actitud i disposició per aprendre i adaptar-se. Estem presenciant la major bretxa digital i de coneixement en la història de la humanitat, no només en termes de tecnologia, sinó també en l’acumulació de coneixements. Qui utilitza IA no només aprèn sobre la tecnologia, sinó que està ampliant el seu coneixement molt més ràpid que amb mètodes educatius tradicionals.

- Consideres que la bretxa digital creada per la IA serà major que la generada per l’aparició de l’ordinador o internet?

- Sí, crec que la bretxa digital que estem veient amb la IA superarà fins i tot a la provocada per l’aparició d’internet. No m’agrada fer prediccions, però el que he vist en l’últim any em fa pensar que s’apropa un gran desajust en nivells de coneixement i habilitats. Estem movent-nos cap a una valoració de la capacitat per sobre de l’experiència en l’àmbit laboral. Per exemple, Anas Andaloussi, un jove de 17 anys, factura 90.000 euros al mes usant IA. El nostre aprenentatge i adaptació amb la IA són molt més ràpids. Personalment, he notat que llegeixo més ràpid des que treballo amb GPT. Aquesta acceleració s’aplica a tot, des de models de negoci fins a la creació de pàgines web.

Molta gent pensa que les eines d’IA requereixen coneixements avançats, però la realitat és que estan dissenyades per ser accessibles a qualsevol, fins i tot a aquells que no tenen formació en informàtica o IA. Un exemple clar és ChatGPT, que és tan senzill d’usar com enviar un missatge per WhatsApp. Això representa un avanç significatiu, ja que permet a qualsevol persona beneficiar-se del poder del llenguatge natural processat per IA.

- As we come to the end of our interview, what has been the trend in your focus areas, especially in recent months with the rise of AI?

- Curiosity and interest in artificial intelligence has grown significantly since Chat GPT explosion in November. I have seen the biggest growth in posts and in participation on TikTok since April-May, with an increase in AI applications and trainings. October was a key month for the growth of AI programme integration in educational institutions and business schools. Undoubtedly, 2024 is marking a milestone in the field of AI.

- For those of us who are not very familiar with AI, where can we look for information and how can we adapt?

- The key is to lose the fear of AI and recognise its versatility. AI is not unique to marketing, although this sector has been quick to adopt it. It can be applied to a wide range of activities, from home decoration to engine design or to automated billing systems implementation. It is essential to start using AI tools to become familiar with them. Tools such as GPT, Johnny, Runway, and Elevenlabs are accessible and allow experimenting with technology. The challenge does not lie in the use of AI, but in how to effectively integrate it into our daily lives and work. 2023 was a year of discovery in terms of what AI can do, and 2024 is the year to learn how to apply it in ways that benefit our careers and businesses.

- Is there a fear that AI could replace jobs, especially in journalism?

- As an expert journalist, I understand that concern. However, I believe that we will not be replaced by AI, but by people who know how to use it efficiently. In February, I posted on LinkedIn a phrase that has become popular: you won’t be replaced by GPT, but you might be replaced by someone who knows how to use GPT. We should not be afraid of AI, but of being left behind while others use it to their advantage. The question is not how much longer we will wait to adapt, but when we will start using these tools so that we are not left behind.

- Do you think that adaptation to AI varies according to age?

- It is a question of attitude. I know colleagues in their 60s who are excellent at using AI, such as Pepe Villar and Xavier Mitjana, who is an eminence in Spain. On the other hand, some 15-year-olds have barely used GPT. So, more than a question of age, it is a question of attitude and willingness to learn and adapt. We are witnessing the biggest digital and knowledge gap in human history, not only in terms of technology, but also in the accumulation of knowledge. Those using AI are not only learning about the technology, but they are expanding their knowledge much faster than with traditional educational methods.

- Do you think that the digital gap created by AI will be greater than that created by the advent of the computer or the internet?

- Yes, I think the digital gap we are seeing with AI will surpass even that caused by the emergence of the internet. I don’t like to make predictions, but what I’ve seen in the last year makes me think that there is a huge mismatch in knowledge and skill levels coming. We are moving towards valuing ability over experience in the workplace. For example, Anas Andaloussi, a 17-year-old, is making 90,000 euros a month using AI. Our learning and adaptation with AI are much faster. Personally, I have noticed that I read faster since working with GPT. This acceleration applies to everything, from business models to website creation.

- The truth is that it looks a bit overwhelming.

- It is overwhelming. In fact, I had a burnout last year and I had to limit my time connected to the AI. I remember one incident when GPT was down and my first reaction was to ask if it was OK. I had a reflexion on my dependence on this technology. There is much to see and consolidate in the AI world.

- Do you see AI as an opportunity rather than a threat?

- Absolutely, AI is a great opportunity. It allows us to learn more and better. Currently, Google monopolises online information, but AI could change that. Often, the search results on Google are not necessarily the best, only the top-ranked ones. AI could help prioritise the really valuable information that is often hidden in later results pages.

- And how do you see the immediate future of AI?

- The evolution of AI is incredibly fast. Even a week out of the field can make you feel disconnected. You continually have to keep up to date so you don’t get left behind. The speed at which AI is advancing is breathtaking. What seems far away today could be a reality tomorrow.

- What would be your top tip for those who want to approach artificial intelligence?

- The most important thing is curiosity and a willingness to be informed. It is also crucial to lose the fear of AI. Many people think that AI tools require advanced knowledge, but the reality is that they are designed to be accessible to anyone, even those with no background in computer science or AI. A prime example is Chat GPT, which is as easy to use as sending a WhatsApp message. This represents a significant advance, as it allows anyone to benefit from the power of AI-processed natural language.

- I quant a la tecnologia emergent, quines prediccions tens per a la fira d’aquest any?

- Bé, he de reconèixer que no estic completament actualitzat sobre el que es pugui presentar específicament en la fira d’aquest any. - In terms of emerging technology, what are your predictions for this year’s fair?

- I must admit that I am not completely up to date on what specifically is going to be presented at this year’s fair. However, based on current trends, I think we will see an emphasis on AI integration in areas such as geo-positioning, transcription, dictation and virtual assistants for mobile devices. Imagine something more advanced than Siri, with much more sophisticated AI. Also, considering recent advances in platforms such as TikTok, we may see devices with flexible and adaptive displays, including those that project interactive interfaces such as virtual keyboards. On the other hand, developments in telephony, such as Samsung’s new devices with simultaneous translation capabilities, indicate that AI is reaching new levels of integration and utility in our daily lives.

- Do you think these technological innovations could change the way we interact with devices and information?

- Absolutely. We are entering an era where technology not only facilitates our daily tasks, but also transforms the way we interact with information and with each other. AI is playing a crucial role in this change, not only improving efficiency, but also making technology more intuitive and adapted to our individual needs.

We talk with Josep Fanals Batllori, CEO of eRoots Analytics, a company that stands out in the development of advanced solutions for power grids and renewable energies. Through his words, we will explore the challenges and opportunities that motivated the creation of eRoots Analytics, the technological advancements that have been key in its development, how the company addresses the challenges of integrating renewable energies, as well as his perspective on the impact of new technologies in the renewable energy sector.

- Quins van ser els principals desafiaments i oportunitats que van impulsar la creació d’eRoots Analytics? Com han evolucionat els vostres objectius des de la fundació?

- Els primer repte van ser generar tracció des de l’inici. Teníem sort de partir d’un grup d’investigació com és el CITCEA-UPC, amb la qual cosa alguns membres de l’equip comptaven ja d’entrada amb cert renom al sector. Però tot i així, no va ser senzill aconseguir els primers projectes i generar interès. Va ser més una qüestió d’anar picant pedra per tal d’aconseguir obrir portes. L’oportunitat que va motivar la creació d’eRoots era un potencial producte vinculat al càlcul de curtcircuits amb presència de renovables, de forma que fos més veloç i precís que la competència. Ho vam aconseguir, ara estem patentant la tecnologia, encara que per arribar a mercat fa falta un recorregut. Per tant un objectiu primordial en què es basava l’essència de la companyia era poder comercialitzar aquesta idea. Actualment encara hi estem insistint, però el model de negoci ha pivotat parcialment cap a proveir serveis d’enginyeria. Això ens proporciona una estructura sòlida per créixer cap allà on volem anar, que és en ser capdavanters a l’hora d’oferir eines per resoldre sistemes elèctrics moderns. Crec que a nivell general les oportunitats són les mateixes que al primer dia: un mercat creixent on la inclusió de renovables ha d’anar de la mà de noves i millorades funcionalitats.

- Quins avenços tecnològics han estat clau per al desenvolupament de les vostres solucions en xarxes elèctriques i energies renovables?

- La integració de renovables passa per la incorporació de convertidors de potència, que són elements que actuen d’interfície entre la xarxa elèctrica i el recurs renovable. Part de la nostra expertesa està en entendre com modelar i controlar aquests elements. Progressivament aquests dispositius comencen a tenir un pes rellevant a l’operació i planificació de la xarxa. Si bé dècades enrere les renovables es podien negligir o aproximar a màquines elèctriques tradicionals, veiem que a mesura que passen els anys aquestes aproximacions són cada cop menys vàlides. Així doncs, per resumir la resposta, diguem que la nostra activitat està fortament lligada de la incorporació de convertidors de potència, els quals inherentment estan vinculats a les renovables.

- Com aborda eRoots Analytics els reptes associats amb la integració d’energies renovables en les xarxes elèctriques existents?

- Primer de tot, pensem que la integració de renovables és una tendència multidimensional. Nosaltres l’abordem des d’una perspectiva elèctrica, en el sentit que realitzem una sèrie d’estudis per determinar l’impacte que exerciran sobre la xarxa com a conjunt. Estem trobant necessari desenvolupar programes que facilitin l’estudi dinàmic i d’estabilitat del sistema, l’optimització de l’operació, i la reducció de costos per a la planificació de la xarxa de cara a les properes dècades. Suposo que com a qualsevol feina, i aquesta no és excepció, les tasques es realitzen de forma més eficient quan es disposa de les eines adequades. Per aquest motiu ens dediquem a desenvolupar programari que facilita l’execució de projectes d’integració de renovables. Per exemple, estem col·laborant amb Redeia (l’operador de xarxa de transport espanyol) per a la creació d’eines d’optimització, i properament treballarem amb l’operador francès per definir eines dinàmiques. Mica en mica volem anar generant un millor flux de treball.

The first major challenge was to generate traction from the start, even with the support of CITCEA-UPC.”

- What were the main challenges and opportunities that drove the creation of eRoots Analytics? How have your goals evolved since the company establishment?

- The first challenge was to generate traction from the beginning. We were lucky to have a research group like CITCEA-UPC as our starting point, so some team members already had a certain renown in the sector. But even so, it was not easy to secure the first projects and generate interest. It was more a matter of keep going to open doors. The opportunity that motivated the creation of eRoots was a potential product linked to the calculation of short circuits with the presence of renewables, in a way that it was faster and more precise than the competition. We achieved it, and now we are patenting the technology, although reaching the market requires a path. Therefore, the essence of the company was based on the primary goal of being able to commercialize this idea. We are still insisting on it, but the business model has partially pivoted towards providing engineering services. This gives us a solid structure to grow towards where we want to go, which is to be leaders in providing tools to solve modern electrical systems. I think that, in general, the opportunities are the same as on the first day: a growing market where the inclusion of renewables must go hand in hand with new and improved functionalities.

- What technological advances have been key for the development of your solutions in electricity grids and renewable energies?

- The integration of renewables involves the incorporation of power converters, which are elements that act as an interface between the electricity grid and the renewable resource. Part of our expertise resides in understanding how to model and control these elements. Gradually, these devices are starting to have a significant weight in the operation and planning of the grid. While decades ago, renewables could be neglected or approximated to traditional electrical machines, we see that these approximations are increasingly less valid over the years. So, to summarize the answer, let’s say that our activity is strongly linked to the incorporation of power converters, which are inherently linked to renewables.

- How does eRoots Analytics address the challenges associated with integrating renewable energies into existing electricity grids?

- First of all, we think that the integration of renewables is a multidimensional trend. We approach it from an electrical perspective, in the sense that we carry out a series of studies to determine the impact they will have on the network. We find it necessary to develop programs that facilitate the dynamic and stability study of the system, the optimization of operation, and the reduction of costs of network planning for the coming decades. I suppose that, like any job, and this is no exception, tasks are performed more efficiently when you have the right tools. For this reason, we focus on developing software that facilitates the execution of renewable integration projects. For example, we are collaborating with Redeia (the Spanish grid operator) to create optimization tools, and soon we will work with the French operator to define dynamic tools. Little by little, we want to generate a better workflow.

- Quins són els principals reptes que enfronta el sector de les energies renovables avui dia?

- Suposo que són molts i molt variats, però si ens centrem en l’impacte que tenen a la xarxa elèctrica, alguns serien: ajustar l’operació tenint en compte la seva intermitència, incorporar emmagatzematge per fer front a la seva variabilitat, assegurar l’estabilitat del sistema a mesura que es redueix la inèrcia global de la xarxa, proveir serveis de flexibilitat, detectar faltes tot i la reduïda intensitat de curtcircuit, integrar xarxes de corrent continu en sistemes de corrent altern, etc. També observem que els programes tradicionals que s’usen per dur a terme estudis d’integració de renovables poden ser rudimentaris i en ocasions no responen a les necessitats del mercat. Per exemple, els models que empren per representar certs elements no són del tot correctes, i els algoritmes es podrien modernitzar per reduir els temps de còmput. En definitiva, tots aquests punts són reptes en majúscules però també oportunitats a atacar.

- En termes de desenvolupament tecnològic i energies renovables, quins són els principals reptes i oportunitats en el mercat actual?

- Seguint el raonament de la pregunta anterior, observem que és un sector amb un cert llegat, el que implica que s’utilitzen pràctiques habituals pròpies de les dècades passades. Primer, trobem que els models elèctrics per estudis dinàmics acostumen a estar tancats. D’aquesta forma els fabricants s’asseguren que la seva propietat intel·lectual no es veu compromesa. Per altra banda, hi ha qui postula que obrir els models aportaria transparència i milloraria l’avanç del sector. Nosaltres compartim aquesta opinió però pensem que les nostres eines han de poder suportar tot tipus de models, tan oberts com tancats. Un altre repte és la velocitat en què es mou aquest camp. Tot i que la inclusió de renovables sigui relativament recent, els programes que tradicionalment s’emportaven major quota de mercat ho continuen fent, però pensem que hi ha marge de millora. Apostem per la creació de noves eines que acceleri el desenvolupament i l’execució d’estudis, encara que la seva adopció necessiti temps.

- Com integra eRoots Analytics els principis de sostenibilitat en el seu model de negoci i operacions diàries?

- El nostre dia a dia consisteix en fer feina d’oficina, pel que intueixo que la nostra petjada de carboni és molt baixa. En aquest sentit la nostra operativa té poc marge de millora. A un nivell més global, Europa ha pres la política d’insistir per la sostenibilitat, amb la qual cosa la nostra activitat de creació d’eines i anàlisis per xarxes elèctriques modernes convergeix cap aquesta direcció.

- De quina manera incorporeu la intel·ligència artificial en les vostres eines i serveis, i quin ha estat el seu impacte en l’anàlisi i optimització de xarxes elèctriques?

- Doncs progressivament està sent més i més important en els projectes que duem a terme. Per exemple, una de les eines d’optimització que estem construint juntament amb Redeia utilitza un model d’intel·ligència artificial per determinar quines són les millors inversions a realitzar. Amb qüestió de pocs segons podem discernir quin equipament hauria d’adquirir un operador de xarxa per millorar l’operació del sistema i reduir costos en un horitzó d’anys. Això suposa un guany de velocitat molt elevat comparat amb altres programes. També estem valorant la possibilitat d’estudiar les normatives de connexió de xarxa mitjançant intel·ligència artificial, el que ens evitaria haver de llegir centenars de documents per identificar els requisits tècnics més crítics. Veiem la intel·ligència artificial com un aliat cap a millorar les nostres solucions. Certament, volem estar al capdavant de la innovació en aquest sector, i aquest és un recurs gairebé indispensable.

- Com valoreu l’impacte de les noves tecnologies com el blockchain o IOT (Internet Of Things) en el sector de l’energia renovable?

- La veritat és que no hem tractat ni amb blockchain ni amb IOT. Fins on conec, blockchain pot millorar l’intercanvi d’energia ja que els contractes de compravenda d’energia serien programables i visibles per a tothom. IOT pot afavorir la monitorització de microxarxes, per exemple, a través d’oferir una major sensorització i monitorització dels equips. Tot i així, aquesta és només la meva visió particular. Com a empresa no treballem amb aquestes tecnologies atès que queden fora del nostre àmbit d’expertesa.

- What are nowadays the main challenges the renewable energy sector deals with?

- I suppose there are many and varied challenges, but if we focus on the impact they have on the electricity grid, some of them would be: adjusting operation taking into account their intermittency, incorporating storage to cope with their variability, ensuring system stability as the overall inertia of the grid is reduced, providing flexibility services, detecting faults despite the reduced short-circuit intensity, integrating direct current networks into alternating current systems, etc. We also observe that traditional programs used to carry out renewable integration studies can be rudimentary and sometimes do not meet market needs. For example, the models they use to represent certain elements are not entirely correct, and the algorithms could be modernized to reduce computing times. In short, all these points are major challenges but also opportunities to tackle.

- In terms of technological development and renewable energies, what are the main challenges and opportunities in the current market?

- Following the reasoning of the previous question, we observe that it is a sector with a certain legacy, which implies that practices typical of past decades are used. First, we find that electrical models for dynamic studies tend to be closed. This way, manufacturers ensure that their intellectual property is not compromised. On the other hand, there are those who argue that opening the models would provide transparency and improve the advancement of the sector. We share this opinion, but we think that our tools must be able to support all types of models, both open and closed.

Another challenge is the speed at which this field moves. Although the inclusion of renewables is relatively recent, the programs that traditionally took the largest market share continue to do so, but we think there is room for improvement. We are committed to creating new tools that accelerate the development and execution of studies, even if their adoption takes time.

- How does eRoots Analytics integrate principles of sustainability into its business model and daily operations?

- Our day-to-day consists of office work, so I imagine that our carbon footprint is very low. In this sense, our operations have little room for improvement. On a more global level, Europe policies insist on sustainability, so our activity of creating tools and analyses for modern electrical networks converges in this direction.

- In what way do you incorporate artificial intelligence into your tools and services, and what has been its impact on the analysis and optimization of electricity grids?

- Progressively, it is becoming more and more important in the projects we undertake. For example, one of the optimization tools we are building together with Redeia uses an artificial intelligence model to determine the best investments to be made. In a matter of seconds, we can discern what equipment a network operator should acquire to improve system operation and reduce costs over a years-long horizon. This represents a very high-speed gain compared to other programs. We are also considering the possibility of studying grid codes through artificial intelligence, which would save us from reading hundreds of documents to identify the most critical technical requirements. We see artificial intelligence as an ally towards improving our solutions. Certainly, we want to be at the forefront of innovation in this sector, and this is an almost indispensable resource.

- How do you assess the impact of new technologies such as blockchain or IoT (Internet of Things) in the renewable energy sector?

- The truth is that we have not dealt with either blockchain or IoT. As far as I know, blockchain can improve energy trading as energy purchase and sale contracts would be programmable and visible to everyone. IoT can favour the monitoring of microgrids. For example, it can offer greater sensorization and monitoring of equipment. However, this is just my personal view. As a company, we do not work with these technologies as they are outside our area of expertise.

- Mirant cap al futur, en quines àrees de tecnologia i energies renovables hi ha més oportunitats de creixement i innovació?

- Diuen que el futur és incert, i en aquest cas això també aplica al camp de les renovables. Als últims anys hem vist una crescuda important en la instal·lació de solar fotovoltaica i eòlica, que si bé tendeixen a consolidar-se, crec que tenen marge de creixement. Especialment l’eòlica marina es pot explotar força més a Europa i és un camp amb innovacions molt interessants. Per exemple, s’estan incorporant els enllaços de molt alta tensió en corrent continu que transcorren pel fons del mar per reduir pèrdues (i costos). Opino que mica en mica anirem veient com els sistemes tradicionals de corrent altern s’uneixen amb xarxes en corrent continu, formant així el que s’anomena una xarxa de xarxes. Evidentment tot això va lligat amb la incorporació dels convertidors de potència. És possible que un mode de control d’aquests convertidors, que pren per nom grid-forming, guany importància i predomini. Necessitem temps perquè aquestes tecnologies es desenvolupin, però malgrat això, la seva arribada és cada cop més imminent.

- Quines són les tendències emergents en el sector de l’energia que tindran més impacte en els propers anys?

- El sector energètic està experimentant canvis a tots els nivells, principalment promoguts per la integració de renovables, solucions d’emmagatzematge, xarxes elèctriques intel·ligents, vehicles elèctrics, l’hidrogen, etc. És impossible quedar-se només amb una tendència, però penso que les renovables són segurament les que tenen un major impacte en general. Condicionen els mercats, la robustesa del sistema, l’operació i la planificació del sistema elèctric. També hi ha la promesa de la fusió nuclear, que podria suposar un canvi de paradigma, però mentre no sigui una realitat penso que les renovables continuaran tenint un paper predominant en l’evolució del sector.

- Què significa per a empreses com la vostra participar en aquesta fira i com plantegeu aprofitar aquesta plataforma per als vostres objectius empresarials i tecnològics?

- En poques paraules, una gran alegria! Ja hi vam poder participar l’any passat i ens va entusiasmar, tant per l’ecosistema emprenedor que s’hi forma com per poder explicar a la gent de què tracta el nostre projecte. Hi ha camps com la medicina que estan guanyant molt de protagonisme, i encara que l’energia no sigui el principal atractiu per alguns visitants, hi ha altres empreses del nostre sector que resulten igualment molt interessants. Aquest any, igual que l’anterior, participem al MWC gràcies a The Collider, l’acceleradora que ens va ajudar a arrencar l’empresa. Ens agrada estar envoltats d’start-ups sorgides també d’aquest programa ja que acostumen a estar localitzades a Barcelona, provenen d’un entorn universitari, i tenen una data de creació propera a la nostra. Tinc la il·lusió de veure un any després quin ha estat el seu progrés i poder compartir una estona parlant sobre els reptes que tots afrontem. Esperem que el MWC serveixi per ensenyar a més gent de què va la nostra tecnologia, generar oportunitats de negoci, així com recollir infinitat d’idees que ens ajudin a millorar.

- Looking towards the future, in which areas of technology and renewable energies are there more opportunities for growth and innovation?

- It is said that the future is uncertain, and in this case, it also applies to the field of renewables. In recent years we have seen significant growth in the installation of photovoltaic and wind power. They tend to consolidate, but I think there is room for growth. Especially, offshore wind can be much more exploited in Europe, and it is a field with very interesting innovations. For example, very high voltage direct current links that run along the seabed are being incorporated to reduce losses (and costs). I think that gradually we will see how traditional alternating current systems join with direct current networks, forming what is called a network of networks. Obviously, all this is linked with the incorporation of power converters. It is possible that a control mode of these converters, known as grid-forming, will gain importance. We need time for these technologies to develop, but despite this, their arrival is becoming increasingly imminent.

- What are the emerging trends in the energy sector that will have the most impact in the coming years?

- The energy sector is experiencing changes at all levels, mainly driven by the integration of renewables, storage solutions, smart electricity grids, electric vehicles, hydrogen, etc. It’s impossible to focus on just one trend, but I think renewables are probably the ones that have the most overall impact. They condition markets, the robustness of the system, and the operation and planning of the electrical system. There is also the promise of nuclear fusion, which could represent a paradigm shift, but if it is not a reality, I think renewables will continue to play a predominant role in the evolution of the sector.

- What does it mean for companies like yours to participate in this fair and how do you plan to use this platform for your business and technological objectives?

- In a few words, a great joy! We were able to participate last year and we were thrilled, both for the entrepreneurial ecosystem that is formed and for being able to tell people about our project. There are fields like medicine that are gaining a lot of prominence, and although energy may not be the main attraction for some visitors, there are other companies in our sector that are equally very interesting. This year, like the last one, we participate in the MWC thanks to The Collider, the accelerator that helped us to start the company. We like being surrounded by start-ups that also emerged from this program as they tend to be in Barcelona, come from a university environment, and were created around the same time as ours.

I am excited to see their progress a year later and to spend time sharing the challenges we all face. We hope that the MWC will show more people what our technology is about, generate business opportunities, as well as collect countless ideas that help us improve.
