Estimados pasajeros, ¿Sabían ustedes que la isla de Menorca cuenta con el coliseo operístico más antiguo de España? Pues así es y se trata del Teatro Principal de Mahón, construido por el arquitecto Giovanni Palagi en 1829. En aquella época, las grandes compañías líricas italianas que iban a actuar a Nueva York o Buenos Aires zarpaban de Génova y llevaban a cabo un ensayo previo en la primera escala del viaje. De ahí procede la enorme tradición lírica menorquina que los “Amigos de la Ópera de Mahón” han preservado hasta hoy. Presenciar una representación operística en ese coqueto teatro del siglo XIX, es solamente una más de las múltiples posibilidades que nos ofrece la isla.

En este número, aparte de a Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Nikola Tesla o Juan del Val, ustedes podrán encontrar también un amplio reportaje dedicado a Menorca. La UNESCO declaró a la isla Reserva de la Biosfera en 1993, debido a la gran diversidad de sus hábitats, a sus numerosas especies endémicas y a los ecosistemas protegidos. En 2019 amplió este reconocimiento a su zona marítima, lo que ha convertido a ‘la isla de la calma’ en la mayor reserva marina del Mediterráneo.

Menorca es un paraíso para los amantes de la naturaleza y las actividades al aire libre. Una buena forma para disfrutar de ella es pasear por el Camí de Cavalls, un sendero costero cuyo recorrido se puede combinar con el itinerario de la ‘Menorca Talayótica’, también incluido en la lista del Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad de la UNESCO. Y si a mí me preguntasen por el patrimonio gastronómico de la isla – no sé si “material” o “inmaterial” - no dudaría en sugerir la caldereta de langosta y la sobrasada. Respecto a esta última, sin lugar a dudas, mis veraneos en las Baleares no serían lo mismo sin ella.

Did you know that the island of Menorca is home to Spain’s oldest opera house? That’s right—the Teatro Principal de Mahón, built by architect Giovanni Palagi in 1829. Back then, the great Italian opera companies travelling to perform in New York and Buenos Aires sailed from Genoa and would make a first rehearsal on their stopover in Menorca.

The island’s longstanding opera tradition that the Amigos de la Ópera de Mahón have preserved to this day comes from there.

Watching an operatic performance inside this charming, nineteenth-century theatre is just one of the many possibilities that the island has to offer.

In this issue, besides reading about Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Nikola Tesla and Juan del Val, you’ll also find a feature article focusing on Menorca. UNESCO designated the island as a Biosphere Reserve in 1993 to recognise its rich variety of habitats, abundance of native species, and protected ecosystems. In 2019, this status was expanded to include the surrounding sea, turning “the calm island” into the largest protected marine area in the Mediterranean.

Menorca is a nature and outdoor enthusiasts’ paradise. A great way to enjoy it is to walk the Camí de Cavalls, a coastal path which can be enjoyed in tandem with the Talayotic Menorca route, also featured in the UNESCO list of Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

And if you asked me about the island's gastronomic heritage – whether “tangible” or “intangible” – I would not hesitate to suggest lobster stew and sobrasada. As for the latter, my summer holidays in the Balearic Islands would undoubtedly not be the same without it.

ts eastern gateway, Maó, is a city with a staggered profile on one of the largest natural ports in the Mediterranean. The port’s elongated stretch of water has shaped the island’s history: a strategic stronghold, a bustling port, and a tranquil shoreline for walking past scenic viewpoints and waterfront facades. and 1726 in the Sant Esteve cove, stands as a stone testament to the 18th century. The fortress features underground galleries and commanding views that highlight the site’s historical military and commercial significance.

At the opposite end of the island, Ciutadella preserves the solemnity of ancient capitals. The historic centre, cosy and made of golden stone, inevitably leads to the Cathedral of Menorca, a Gothic temple with a single nave built after the conquest of 1287 and the stage of organ recitals in summer. Crossing its square is enough to notice the calm beat of a city that lets itself be explored at leisure.

But if Menorca has become a key fixture in the cultural map of the world is largely due to the inclusion of Talayotic Menorca in the UNESCO World Heritage List: a cyclopean epic journey featuring a plethora of prehistoric sites. Travellers can visit the Naveta des Tudons—the island’s best-known collective burial site, built using a cyclopean masonry technique—to learn about the power of an ancient architecture shrouded in silence, or climb up the Torre d’en Galmés, one of the vastest Talayotic settlements, where residential structures and talayots conjure up an ancient town planning on wind-lashed hills. Spread across nine areas, the site encompasses hundreds of locations that share a unique story about the prehistoric Mediterranean in an openair setting.

Si la jornada sigue hacia el oeste, la carretera desemboca en el Faro de Cavalleria, atalaya inaugurada en 1857 y centro de interpretación: un lugar de horizonte limpio, atardeceres de cobre y memoria marinera.

En la isla, los caminos no solo conectan, también relatan. El Camí de Cavalls, senda histórica recuperada y señalizada, circunda el perímetro menorquín por tramos: es la mejor manera de comprender, paso a paso, la variedad de costas, pinares y acantilados; y de asomarse a calas que, vistas desde tierra, se revelan con otra escala. Esta ruta, que hoy es disfrute y educación ambiental, nació como cinturón de vigilancia y resume, quizá mejor que ningún lugar, el pacto de Menorca con su paisaje.

ing it easy to understand why towers, lighthouses, and fortresses are such integral parts of Menorca’s geography and history. Heading west, the road leads to Faro de Cavalleria, a lighthouse opened in 1857 that now serves as an interpretation centre offering open views, copper-coloured sunsets, and seafaring memories.

On the island, roads not only connect but they also tell stories. Camí de Cavalls is a restored and signposted historic footpath running along Menorca’s coastline in several stretches. Walking it is the best way to understand, step by step, the variety of coasts, pine forests, and cliffs, allowing you to gaze at the coves from land, which offers a whole new perspective. This route, which today provides environmental enjoyment and education, was built as a defensive line. It encapsulates, perhaps better than any place, Menorca’s pact with its landscape.

Hablar de playas en Menorca obliga a nombrar dos dialectos del mismo mar. En el sur, donde el karst dibuja barrancos y el pinar llega a la arena, la escena es de azul fragante y arenas muy claras.

Macarella -integrada en un Área Natural de Especial Interés- se presenta como una bahía casi perfecta entre el Castellet y la Punta de na Xulla; es una de las playas más visitadas y un paisaje ejemplar de gestión que pide al viajero respeto y madrugar. Muy cerca, Cala Mitjana, a siete kilómetros de Ferreries, se recoge entre paredes calcáreas y bosque, con una zona húmeda que suma biodiversidad; y Cala en Turqueta, escondida entre acantilados bajos, hace honor a su nombre con aguas de espejo y paso de gaviotas. Tres nombres para entender por qué el sur de Menorca, a pie o por el Camí, encarna el Mediterráneo sereno que muchos imaginan.

El norte habla otro idioma. Aquí mandan la pizarra y la arcilla roja, los macars de cantos rodados, los perfiles más salvajes. Cavalleria abre una concha doble de arena dorada, con sistema dunar y oleaje que en días de tramontana levanta espuma; cercana, Binimel·là encadena caminos hacia miradores naturales; y un poco más allá, Pregonda -con sus islotes y el vuelo de la rara gaviota de Audouin- tiñe el paisaje de ocres y amarillos. Si el día invita a caminar, la ruta hacia Cala Pilar -final de una duna fósil de kilómetros tierra adentro- regala uno de los escenarios más rotundos del litoral norte. Son playas que recuerdan al viajero que aquí manda la naturaleza: fondear no siempre es recomendable, los accesos se miden en pasos, y el premio es la sensación de isla intacta.

When it comes to beaches in Menorca, the sea speaks two different dialects. In the south, karst formations carve out ravines with pine trees that extend all the way to the sandy shore, resulting in a fragrant scene of azure hues and white sand. Macarella— found inside a Natural Area of Special Interest—is a nearly-perfect bay nestled between Castellet and Punta de na Xulla. Being one of the most visited beaches and a fine example of landscape management, it requires travellers to take care of it and get there early. Nearby, Cala Mitjana, seven kilometres away from Ferreries, is nestled between limestone walls and forests, with a humid area that adds biodiversity. Hidden between low cliffs, Cala en Turqueta lives up to its name with seagulls soaring over its shimmering turquoise waters. These are three spots that illustrate why the south of Menorca, whether explored on foot or along the Camí, embodies the serene Mediterranean often imagined by many.

The north is a different story. Here, slate and red clay, shingle beaches, and jagged outlines prevail. Cavalleria unfolds creating two shell-like golden sand beaches with dunes and waves that create foam when the tramontana blows. Close by, Binimel·là connects roads to natural viewpoints.

A little further, Pregonda—with its islets and rare Audouin’s gulls—paint the landscape in ochre and yellow hues. If it’s a good day for a walk, the route to Cala Pilar—the end part of a fossil dune that runs kilometres inland—offers one of the most scenic views of the northern coast. These are beaches that remind travellers that nature is in charge here. Dropping the anchor here is not always recommended; it’s better to get to them on foot and be rewarded with an untouched part of the island.

El corazón verde de Menorca late, en mayúsculas, en el Parc Natural de s’Albufera des Grau, núcleo de la Reserva de la Biosfera. Más de cinco mil hectáreas de laguna litoral, sistemas dunares, costa, islotes y fincas agrarias dibujan un mosaico de humedales y bosques donde anidan y migran aves, y donde los itinerarios señalizados proponen caminar sin prisa para leer el paisaje.

Volver a la costa es regresar a los faros y a los horizontes. Desde Cavalleria, la vista recoge el puerto romano de Sanitja y el mosaico geológico del norte. En la ribera de Maó, los muelles y paseos a pie de agua cuentan lo que fueron arsenales y líneas de carga; es un paisaje civil, de vida cotidiana, que conserva las capas de su pasado.

Y si la mirada quiere más historia, el propio Consell y la Fundació Foment del Turisme mantienen abiertos -con horarios variables según temporada- monumentos como la Naveta des Tudons, el poblado de Torre d’en Galmés, la Torre de Fornells o el Fort Marlborough, con tarifas públicas y visitas guiadas que facilitan entender cada época.

Parc Natural de s’Albufera des Grau is Menorca’s vibrant green heart and the Biosphere Reserve’s central point. More than five thousand hectares of coastal lagoon, dune systems, coastline, islets, and farm estates create a tapestry of wetlands and forests where migrating birds nest and signposted routes invite you to walk leisurely to read the landscape.

Heading back to the coast is going back to the lighthouses and sweeping vistas. From Cavalleria, the view includes the Roman port of Sanitja and the northern geological mosaic. On the Maó shores, the docks and waterside walks speak of former arsenals and cargo lines; it’s a civil landscape, of everyday life, that preserves the layers of its past. If the visitor wishes to learn more about history, the Consell and the Fundació Foment del Turisme open at different times (depending on the season) monuments such as the Naveta des Tudons, the Torre d’en Galmés settlement, the Torre de Fornells, or Fort Marlborough, with public fees and guided tours that make it easier to learn about each period.

AUTENTICIDAD.

Usted empezó en la gimnasia rítmica con seis años. ¿Recuerda su primera vez en un gimnasio?

Sí, perfectamente. Aunque probé una clase de gimnasia rítmica no por iniciativa propia, sino porque mis amigas del colegio se habían apuntado. Fue entrar en aquel pequeño gimnasio, ponerme el maillot y, desde el primer minuto, sentirme atrapada.

Sentí una conexión inmediata. Aquella primera clase marcó el inicio de algo que me ha acompañado hasta hoy.

La carrera de una gimnasta está llena de renuncias, especialmente en la infancia y la adolescencia. ¿Qué tuvo que dejar de lado para progresar como deportista?

Todo deporte de alto nivel exige mucho desde edades tempranas, y más aún la gimnasia rítmica, ya que empezamos muy jóvenes. Pero puedo decir con orgullo que jamás sentí que, como gimnasta, renunciara a nada. Al contrario: vivía la vida que quería vivir, era mi elección. Evidentemente, dejé

You started rhythmic gymnastics at the age of six. Do you remember your first time in a gym?

Yes, I remember it perfectly. I was actually trying a rhythmic gymnastics class not on my own initiative, but because my school friends had signed up. From the moment I stepped into that small gym and put on my leotard, I was instantly captivated. I felt an immediate connection. That first class marked the beginning of something that still stays with me.

A gymnast’s career involves significant sacrifices, especially in childhood and adolescence. What did you have to put aside to progress as an athlete?

All high-performance sports demand a lot from an early age, and even more so rhythmic gymnastics, as we start when we’re very young. But I can proudly say that I never felt like I had to give up anything to be a gymnast, quite the contrary.

I was living the life I wanted to live; it was my choice. Of course, I was absent from many birthdays, school trips, and parties but I never missed them. I was passionate about what I was doing.

de lado muchos cumpleaños, viajes escolares o fiestas, pero nunca los eché en falta. Me apasionaba lo que hacía. ¿Siente que aquellos años forjaron su personalidad? ¿Qué lecciones aprendió en aquella etapa?

Sin duda. El deporte, junto con la educación que me dieron mis padres, me enseñó los valores más importantes que me han acompañado siempre, dentro y fuera del tapiz: el esfuerzo, la constancia, la resiliencia, la responsabilidad, el compañerismo… y muchos más.

Esos valores son el mayor regalo que me ha dado el deporte. ¿Ha cambiado su visión de este deporte con el paso de los años?

Más que cambiar, ha evolucionado mi perspectiva y mis objetivos.

Como deportista, entrenas para crecer, aprender y luchar por los resultados. Pero como técnica, jueza y amante del deporte, aprendes a valorar la parte humana, educativa y emocional que ofrece la gimnasia. Lo que no cambia es el crecimiento personal que te aporta en cualquiera de sus facetas.

Una de sus grandes alegrías fue representar a España en competiciones oficiales desde 2005. ¿Qué recuerdos tiene de eventos tan especiales como los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín 2008?

Representar a España fue un honor inmenso. Los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín fueron una experiencia inol-

“I never felt I was giving up anything to be a gymnast”

Do you feel that those years forged your personality?

What lessons did you learn at that stage?

Without a doubt. Sports, along with the education that my parents gave me, taught me the core values that have guided me throughout life both on and off the mat: hard work, perseverance, resilience, responsibility, team spirit, and many more. The most valuable thing I’ve gained from sport are those values.

Has your opinion on this sport changed over the years?

More than changing, my perspective and goals have evolved. As an athlete, you train to grow, learn, and fight for results. However, as a coach, judge, and sports lover you learn to value the human, educational and emotional side that gymnastics offers. The personal growth that it brings you in any of its aspects remains unchanged.

One of your greatest joys was representing Spain in official competitions since 2005. What memories do you have of those special events such as the 2008 Beijing Olympics?

Representing Spain was a huge honour. The Beijing Olympics were an unforgettable experience: the atmosphere, the excitement, the pride of representing my country, the feeling of fulfilling a dream. It was every athlete’s dream. I cherish that memory fondly and feel incredibly proud of it.

vidable: el ambiente, la emoción, el orgullo de representar a mi país, el sentimiento de estar cumpliendo un sueño. El sueño al que aspira todo deportista. Es un recuerdo que guardo con enorme orgullo y cariño. ¿Cómo fue ese primer día en el que ya no tuvo que ir a entrenar?

Fue extraño. De repente pasas de una rutina muy estructurada a tener un vacío enorme. La retirada es una etapa dura para cualquier deportista: debes reconstruirte y volver a buscar eso que te emociona y te mueve. Tuve la suerte de poder seguir vinculada al deporte, tanto en mi formación como en mi carrera profesional, y de contar con el apoyo de mi familia, que fue fundamental para mantener el rumbo y seguir luchando por nuevos sueños.

Tras su retirada, se licenció en INEF y se puso al frente del Club BS Menorca Rítmica. ¿Una persona con una trayectoria exitosa como la suya tiene la responsabilidad de transmitir

sus conocimientos a las nuevas generaciones?

Sí, lo creo firmemente. Todo lo que he aprendido a lo largo de los años no tendría sentido si no lo compartiera. Me apasiona formar y acompañar a las nuevas generaciones, no solo en lo técnico, sino también en lo personal. Intento transmitirles los valores que yo aprendí en la rítmica y, sobre todo, inculcarles la pasión con la que vivo este deporte.

Ahora es la presidenta de la Federació de Gimnàstica de les Illes Balears (FGIB). ¿Qué tal lleva una deportista como usted pisar moqueta en los despachos?

No es fácil. He salido de mi zona de confort y afronto nuevos retos que también son muy emocionantes. Al final, el objetivo es el mismo: hacer crecer la gimnasia. Intento aportar mi visión como deportista, entrenadora y jueza, para que las decisiones se tomen pensando siempre en el bienestar y el desarrollo de quienes forman parte de este deporte.

Me encantaría que los jóvenes crecieran con esos valores, porque son los que realmente construyen personas fuertes y comprometidas. Intento aportar mi pequeño granito de arena para que así sea.

Menorquina de pies a cabeza, ¿tiene alguna recomendación especial para los visitantes de la isla? ¿Qué no deberían perderse, fuera de los lugares más conocidos?

Menorca tiene rincones maravillosos más allá de las playas más famosas. Recomiendo perderse por el interior, visitar los pueblos pequeños, disfrutar de la gastronomía local y de los paisajes rurales.

Y, sobre todo, vivir la isla con calma, sin prisas, como lo hacemos los menorquines.

How was that first day when you no longer had to go training?

It was strange. You go from a very structured routine to having an empty agenda suddenly. Retirement is a hard stage for any athlete: you must reinvent yourself and rediscover what excites you and moves you. I was lucky to be able to stay involved in sports, both in my training and in my professional career, and to have the support of my family, which was fundamental to stay on track and continue fighting for new dreams.

After retiring, you got a Physical Activity and Sport Sciences degree and took charge of the BS Menorca Rítmica Club. Does a person with a successful career like yours have the responsibility to pass on their knowledge to the new generations?

Yes, I firmly believe that. Everything I’ve learnt over the years wouldn’t make sense if I didn’t share it. I’m passionate about

training and guiding the new generations, not only technically, but also personally. I try to share and convey the values that I learnt in rhythmic gymnastics and, above all, to instil in them the passion with which I experience this sport.

You’re now the President of the Balearic Islands Gymnastics Federation (FGIB).

How does an athlete like you feel about stepping on to the office carpet?

It’s not easy. I’ve left my comfort zone and now face new challenges that are also very exciting. At the end of the day, the goal is the same: to make gymnastics advance. I try to contribute my vision as an athlete, coach, and judge, so that decisions are made always thinking about the well-being and development of those who are part of this sport.

What values from your sport would you like to see permeate into Spanish society? It seems

that discipline is in short supply these days.

Gymnastics teaches fundamental values such as discipline, respect, teamwork, and self-improvement. I’d love young people to grow up with that set of values, because they’re the ones who really build strong and committed people. I try to do my bit to make it happen.

As a Minorcan through and through, do you have any special recommendations for anyone visiting the island?

What should not be missed, besides the most well-known places?

Menorca has wonderful spots besides the most famous beaches.

I recommend getting lost inland, visiting the small villages, enjoying the local gastronomy and the rural landscapes. Most of all, I’d recommend them to enjoy the island at leisure, without haste, as we Minorcans do.

Fernández explica que la cosa culinaria de esta tierra gira en torno a la sencillez: «Se trabajaba con los productos que había. Un reflejo de esta idea es la oliagua: sopa de cebolla, tomates, pimiento y ajo.

No había mucho más». Más allá de estas buenas costumbres, Caules se fija en unas «dotes guisanderas que han producido platos contundentes». El secreto del éxito de este recetario es una combinación acertada entre la pasión por la tierra propia y la esencia del mar.

Fernández explains that the cooking endeavour in the island revolves around simplicity: “People used the ingredients that were available at the time. A testament to this practice is oliaigua, an onion, tomato, pepper, and garlic soup. There wasn’t much else.” Beyond these good habits, Caules pays attention to some “cooking skills that have produced hearty dishes”. The key to the success of this culinary wealth is the right combination of being passionate about one’s own land and the essence of the sea.

En los hogares y restaurantes de la isla se cocinan muchos platos del amplísimo vademécum de cocina marinera, transmitido, las más de las veces, de forma oral. El listado de exquisiteces que proporciona el Mediterráneo, tan viejo y sabio, parece no acabarse: cabracho, peix de roca, doncellas, esparralls… En esa cocina humilde y rotunda, la langosta es la reina.

Many households and restaurants around the island prepare a wide variety of seafood dishes drawing from a rich culinary tradition primarily handed down by word of mouth.

The list of delicacies provided by the old and wise Mediterranean seems endless: cabracho, peix de roca, doncellas, esparralls, and other fish.

Within that modest yet solid cuisine, the lobster reigns supreme.

De la roca al fogón

ay territorios, como Menorca, que parecen hechos para que la vida sea un deleite. Todo es mérito de sus calas resguardadas, el verde persistente de sus campos y una luz que invita a mirar el mundo con sosiego. Y su cocina, claro.

En este escenario, la gastronomía menorquina no es hija de la abundancia, sino del uso sabio de lo que la tierra y el mar ofrecen en cada estación. Buenos intérpretes de esta tradición son Serapio Fernández, propietario de Es Cranc, y Josep Caules, hijo, quien gestiona actualmente el Café Balear.

La langosta roja europea –Palinurus elephas para los tiquismiquis– es una criatura propia de los fondos rocosos y fríos, donde encuentra alimento abundante y las condiciones precisas que moldean su textura firme, un sabor lleno de dulzor marino y una jugosidad que depende de la frescura del producto y del arte en las manos que lo trataron. In the island’s case, it’s to the credit of its sheltered coves, its relentless green fields, a light that invites you to look at the world calmly, and its cuisine, of course. In these surroundings, Menorcan gastronomy isn’t born from abundance, but from using what the land and the sea offer in each season wisely. Serapio Fernández, owner of Es Cranc, and Josep Caules junior, who currently manages Café Balear, are great interpreters of this tradition.

The European red lobster—Palinurus elephas for the purists—is a creature living on the rocky, cold seafloor, where it finds abundant food and the necessary conditions that gives it its firm texture, a taste brimming with sea sweetness, and a juiciness that depends on the freshness of the product and the art in the hands that cook it. To protect it from modern-day pirates, the authen-

Serapio Fernández es un entusiasta del producto. Para él, como la materia prima menorquina no hay dos: «He recorrido medio mundo buscando algo similar y no lo he encontrado. Lo que he visto en el Caribe, el Pacífico y el Atlántico norte no era mejor que las nuestras. Tenemos profundidad y acantilados rocosos donde se alimentan bien estos animales. No es casualidad que Menorca sea una isla muy sostenible y bien cuidada, porque en otras latitudes la especie está esquilmada».

Con el paso de los años, describe Josep Caules, «es un producto que se ha revalorizado mucho. Tiempo atrás no era lo que es ahora. Ahora es un icono de nuestra gastronomía, un producto estrella.

Eso sí, hay que saberla cocinar».

El atractivo no solo estriba en su sabor, sino en el contexto de su consumo. No es el qué, es el dónde. Darse un homenaje en Fornells o Ciutadella es una experiencia imprescindible, algo que va mucho más allá del plato. Ya sea a la parrilla, en una buena paella o en un guiso, cada bocado es una delicia. Sin embargo, el plato insignia de la isla es la famosa caldereta de langosta.

Cultura marinera

La historia de la celebérrima caldereta tiene su aquel. Según apunta Serapio Fernández, «surgió en el momento en el que los pescadores salían para suministrar pescado a las lonjas. Los restaurantes solo querían peces del litoral de Menorca.

Vendían lo vendible y lo único que les quedaba por vender eran las langostas». Los marineros ya estaban hasta el copete de este marisco –de todo se aburre uno– y le echaron ganas hasta dar con una sopa que «no deja de ser un caldo con langosta.

Nosotros lo hacemos como lo hacían ellos: un buen caldo y una buena langosta, macerada en este líquido durante veinticuatro horas para que adquiera buen sabor».

Si la cosa va como debería, todo queda bien procesado para dejar el mejor gusto en la boca. Esos pucheros, verdaderas marmitas mágicas, requieren varias horas para que se evapore el caldo y se concentre todo su carácter. No hay trucos, solo dejar que el tiempo haga lo que tiene que hacer. El resultado es abrumador, en invierno o en verano.

Serapio Fernández is one of its enthusiasts. In his view, the Menorcan staple is unparalleled: “I’ve travelled half the world looking for something similar and I haven’t found it. What I have seen in the Caribbean, the Pacific and the North Atlantic was no better than ours. We have a deep sea and rocky cliffs where these animals can feed well. It’s no coincidence that Menorca is a very sustainable and well-preserved island, because in other parts of the world the species is depleted.”

Josep Caules says that “over the years, it has gradually increased its worth. It wasn’t like this in the past. Now it’s an icon of our gastronomy, an absolute favourite. We must know how to cook it, of course.”

Its appeal lies not only in its taste, but in how it’s enjoyed. It’s not the what, but the where. Feasting on it in Fornells or Ciutadella is a must, as the experience goes far beyond the dish. Whether grilled, in a good paella, or in a stew, ev-

ery bite is a treat. However, the island’s flagship dish is the famous lobster caldereta or stew.

Seafaring culture

The story behind this world-famous stew is noteworthy. According to Serapio Fernández, “it originated when the fishermen took their catch to the fish markets. Back then, restaurants on the coast of Menorca only wanted fish. So, the fishermen sold what was saleable and all they had left were the lobsters.”

As they were already fed up with this seafood—one can get bored of anything—they tried hard to concoct a soup that was “basically a broth with lobster. We make it as they did: marinating a good lobster in a proper broth for 24 hours so that it tastes great.”

If things go as they should, the process leaves the best taste in the mouth. These stews, like real magic potions, require several hours for the broth to evaporate and concentrate all its personality. There are no tricks, just letting time do what it does best.

The result is stunning, both in winter and summer.

ES CRANC Uno de los establecimientos más antiguos de Fornells, enclave pesquero y capital gastronómica de Menorca. Con viveros propios, y pescados y mariscos frescos del día, mantiene una tradición culinaria auténtica y sobradamente reconocida.

Como recitaba el patrón del Café Balear, Josep Caules padre, la receta no tiene pérdida: «Un sofrito de verduras, fondo de pescado y la cabeza de langosta con sus interiores. Fundamental el toque que aporta la picada en el último momento, el clásico majado de mortero. Cada cocinero esconde su secreto y en Menorca no hay dos iguales».

The recipe is straightforward. As the owner of Café Balear Josep Caules senior used to recite: “Sautéed veg, fish stock, and lobster head with its innards. Adding picada (the classic mortar and pestle sauce) as a final touch is key. Each chef has their own trick, and there are no two stews alike in Menorca.”

CAFÉ BALEAR Nació como taberna portuaria y, tras más de cuarenta años de gestión familiar, mantiene su esencia. Especializado en productos del mar y con una barca pesquera propia, ha evolucionado sin perder sus principios y es referente en el Puerto de Ciutadella.

En la variedad está el gusto

Más allá de la caldereta, icono de los pucheros menorquines, este producto aún tiene ases en la manga. En Es Cranc, Serapio Fernández propone una buena langosta a la plancha, sin más ceremonia. Es una apuesta directa por la calidad, ya que «sin nada más es como mejor se aprecia». Josep Caules hijo, por su parte, sugiere un plato más elaborado, pero igualmente sabroso: la langosta con cebolla del Café Balear, «que queda muy jugosita porque la cebolla se cocina antes y se termina de rehogar con ella».

En ambos locales sirven un plato que, a priori, resulta sorprendente: langosta con huevos y patatas fritas. De primeras, parece una incongruencia mezclar un producto tan caro con otro mucho más económico en comparación. No pasa nada, el amor se viste de lino y de franela. Basta la sabia opinión de profesionales. Caules confirma que «más que fast food es un fast good que está buenísimo». Serapio Fernández sentencia que no ha escuchado un comentario «que no sea de nueve y medio para arriba».

CAFÉ BALEAR

First opened as a port tavern. After more than forty years as a family-owned business, it retains its essence. Specialising in seafood and with its own fishing boat, it has evolved without losing sight of its principles, becoming an icon in the port of Ciutadella.

Variety is the spice of life

Besides the caldereta—the star of Menorcan stews—there are many aces up the sleeve of cooks using this ingredient. In Es Cranc, Serapio Fernández offers an excellent, no-frills grilled lobster. It’s a clear commitment to quality, as lobster “is best appreciated on its own terms”. Josep Caules, on the other hand, suggests a more elaborate but equally tasty dish: Café Balear lobster with onion, “which is very juicy because the onion is cooked beforehand and the lobster is sautéed with it at the end”.

Both eateries serve a dish that might seem surprising at first: lobster with egg and chips. It might seem a contradiction to mix such an expensive product with a much cheaper one, but it works—love is universal regardless of wealth. The seasoned opinion of professionals suffices. Caules confirms that “more than fast food, it’s fast and good, and delicious”. Serapio Fernández says that he has never heard anyone scoring it “below nine and a half”.

l Puente Romano, con el Guadalquivir a los pies y la silueta de la ciudad al fondo, es amor a primera vista. Al otro lado espera la Torre de la Calahorra, hoy Museo Vivo de Al-Ándalus, donde se repasa el legado de las tres culturas que marcaron la ciudad. Cuando cae el sol, el mismo monumento se transforma con el espectáculo nocturno ‘El Alma de Córdoba’, un recorrido guiado de luz y sonido que permite entender la evolución del edificio desde sus orígenes como mezquita, hasta la actual catedral.

La siguiente etapa discurre en clave regia. El Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos abre sus jardines geométricos, sus estanques y sus torres de vigilancia. Desde lo alto se domina la ciudad, el río y una buena parte de las murallas árabes. Después, la ruta se adentra en la Judería: la pequeña Sinagoga, una de las pocas medievales que se conservan en España; la casa Andalusí, que recrea una vivienda de época musulmana, y la cercana Casa de Sefarad, que reivindica la memoria sefardí.

Parte de la ruta está reservada a un capricho arqueológico: Medina Azahara, ciudad califal situada a unos kilómetros de Córdoba, también Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Entre

eeing the Roman Bridge, with the Guadalquivir flowing underneath it, against the backdrop of the city’s skyline is love at first sight. On the other bank awaits the Calahorra Tower, which now houses the Living Museum of Al-Andalus, where the legacy of the three cultures that left their mark in the city is displayed. A few steps away, the Puerta del Puente gate and the triumphal monument to St Raphael welcome travellers into the historic centre of white-washed alleys and squares that UNESCO protected decades ago.

After that first contact, the call of the Mosque-Cathedral is inescapable.

Its red-and-white arches with its forest-like effect, the mihrab, and the ensuing Christian intervention make the visit an abridged journey through more than 1,000 years of history. It’s recommended to come with time, take a seat, watch how the light filters between the columns, and let silence do the rest. When the sun goes down, the monument itself is transformed with the night show ‘El Alma de Córdoba’, a guided tour of light and sound that allows visitors to understand the building’s evolution, from its origins as a mosque to the current cathedral.

The next stage takes a royal turn. The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos fortress opens its geometric gardens, ponds, and watchtowers to visitors, offering commanding views over the city, the river, and a good part of the Arab walls. The route then enters the Jewish Quarter: the small Synagogue, one of the few medieval synagogues preserved in Spain; the Casa Andalusí, which recreates a house from the Muslim period, and the nearby Casa de Sefarad, which highlights the Sephardic tradition.

Part of the route is dedicated to an archaeological whim: Medina Azahara, a caliphal city located a few kilometres from Córdoba, also a World Heritage Site. Among the ruins of halls, a mosque, and terraces visitors can get an idea of the

por el mejor plan posible: sentarse a la mesa.

Porque Córdoba también se cuenta a través de su cocina. Las tabernas históricas (como Bodegas Campos, casa Pepe de la Judería, Taberna Salinas o las distintas Sociedades de Plateros), son parte del paisaje emocional de la ciudad: salmorejo denso, rabo de toro, frituras, vinos generosos y barras donde todavía hay tiempo para la conversación pausada.

Para despedir el viaje, nada como una noche en las Caballerizas Reales, donde el espectáculo ecuestre mezcla doma, música y luz, y recuerda que Córdoba también es cuna del caballo andaluz. Una visita basta para entender que aquí el tiempo se estira, que la historia se pida a cada paso y que, al marcharse, la sensación es siempre la misma: que aún quedan muchas esquinas por descubrir y que la ciudad invita, literalmente, a volver.

Nearby, the Archaeological Museum offers an overview of the city’s history from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages, while the Caliphal Baths allow us to imagine what everyday life was like in Muslim Córdoba. The tour can end with a stop at the Triunfo de San Rafael, a protective symbol of the city, before getting carried away by the best possible plan: sitting at the table.

Córdoba is also narrated through its cuisine. The historic taverns (such as Bodegas Campos, Casa Pepe de la Judería, Taberna Sali-

nas or the several Sociedades de Plateros) are part of city’s emotional landscape: thick salmorejo, bull’s tail, deep-fried bites, fortified wines, and bars where there’s still time for quiet conversation.

n the shores of the lake of the four forest cantons, or Vierwaldstättersee, sits one of Switzerland’s historical and cultural centres: Lucerne. It still preserves original paintings from the 17th century—despite a fire nearly ravaging them in 1993—that tell the story of Lucerne, its landmarks, its characters and its legends. Halfway, like a cliff rising from the lake, is the Water Tower, part of the old city’s, which was used as a prison, archive and municipal treasury, and which today houses one of the largest colonies of Alpine swifts in the country.

To the north, still enclosing the historic centre, the imposing Musegg Wall boasts nine towers and offers one of the best views of the lake and the Alps before they descend to the shore, where another historic bridge connects the two parts of the city: the Spreuerbrücke, known for its paintings on the Dance of Death.

But there’s still more. To the north of the walls is one of the most famous Swiss monuments: the Löwendenkmal, the Lion of Lucerne. Carved directly into the rock at the beginning of the 19th century and with a small pond that, according to legend, grants a wish to those who toss a coin into it, it’s a tribute to the 760 Swiss Guard mercenaries who lost their lives during the French Revolution while defending the Tuileries Palace. Right next door, the Glacier Garden allows you to discover the geological history of the region on a tour that includes passageways, glacier wells, and a museum.

Cumbres alpinas

Al sur de Lucerna se alza el monte Pilatus, cuya cumbre alcanza los 2132 metros. Hasta allí se puede llegar desde Alpnachstad entre mayo y noviembre, gracias al Pilatusbahn, ferrocarril de cremallera más empinado del mundo –con desniveles que llegan al 48 %–, o mediante telecabinas que parten de Kriens durante todo el año y sobrevuelan campos y montes hasta la cima, donde dos hoteles desafían al invierno.

En la orilla opuesta del lago se encuentra la «reina de las montañas» o monte Rigi. Puede visitarse en teleférico, pero los trenes son protagonistas. De los nueve que serpentean por la ladera de la monta-

ña –entre los que se encuentra el ferrocarril de cremallera más antiguo de Europa, que se remonta a 1871–, destacan las dos locomotoras de vapor que continúan empujando entre la nieve los mismos vagones –restaurados– que cuando se inauguró la línea. Una vez en el Rigi, con Lucerna brillando en su orilla, el lago ofrece uno de los paisajes más pintorescos de la Suiza invernal donde practicar esquí, deslizarse en trineo o relajarse entre las aguas minerales de Rigi Kaltbad.

Además, quienes disfrutan de los deportes de nieve tienen la posibilidad de llegar en barco desde Lucerna a la estación de esquí de Klewenalp gracias al teleférico que la une a Beckenried y su puerto atravesando las nubes.

Alpine summits

To the south of Lucerne lies Mount Pilatus, which rises to 2,132 metres.

You can get there from Alpnachstad between May and November thanks to the Pilatusbahn, the world’s steepest rack railway (with a maximum gradient of 48 per cent) or by cable cars that leave from Kriens all year round and fly over fields and mountains to the top, where two hotels defy winter.

On the opposite shore of the lake is the “Queen of the Mountains” or Mount Rigi. It can be visited by cable car, but the trains take centre stage. Of the nine that meander

along the slope of the mountain— among which is the oldest rack railway in Europe, dating back to 1871—the two steam locomotives continue to push through the snow pulling the same restored cars as when the line was inaugurated.

Once in the Rigi, with Lucerne shining on its shore, the lake offers one of the most picturesque winter landscapes in Switzerland for skiing, sledging, or relaxing in the mineral waters of Rigi Kaltbad.

Those who enjoy winter sports can also arrive by boat from Lucerne to the ski resort of Klewenalp thanks to the cable car that connects it to Beckenried and its port, piercing through the clouds.

Planes urbanos

Asomarse al mercado de Lucerna, resguardado en las arcadas del antiguo ayuntamiento, o a alguno de los balcones que cuelgan sobre la orilla del Reuss y que ofrecen unas vistas inigualables de los puentes que lo cruzan entre el aroma de la comida recién hecha es otra de las formas de descubrir una ciudad.

Entre el 15 y el 25 de enero, al caer la noche, tiene lugar el Festival Lilu, evento que inunda de luz y color las calles. Las proyecciones, diseñadas por artistas tanto suizos como de otras nacionalidades, iluminan monumentos tan destacados como la torre del agua o la iglesia de los jesuitas.

Si la temperatura se desploma, siempre es posible acercarse al museo más visitado de Suiza, el Verkehrshaus der Schweiz o Museo Suizo del Transporte. Aviones, trenes, barcos y todo tipo de vehículos se combinan en una exposición interactiva en la que no faltan simuladores. Desde allí se puede acceder al mayor planetario del país para descubrir el cielo que cubre el corazón de los Alpes y las estrellas que iluminan uno de los rincones más altos de Europa.

Wandering through Lucerne market, sheltered under the arcades of the old town hall, or visiting one of the balconies that hang over the banks of river Reuss and offer unparalleled views of the bridges that cross it enveloped by the aroma of fresh food is another way to discover the city. The Lilu Light Festival takes place between 15 and 25 January, an event that floods the streets with light and colour at nightfall. The projections, designed by Swiss and international artists, illuminate monuments as prominent as the Water Tower or the Jesuit church.

If the temperature drops, it’s always possible to head to the most visited museum in Switzerland, the Verkehrshaus der Schweiz or Swiss Museum of Transport. Planes, trains, boats, and all sorts of vehicles are brought together in an interactive exhibition offering plenty of simulators. From there you can access the largest planetarium in the country to discover the sky that covers the heart of the Alps and the stars that illuminate one of the highest corners of Europe.

Alojarse en el hotel La Fonda tiene algo de experiencia inmersiva en esa Marbella cosmopolita. Lo que comenzó siendo una residencia privada, fue también iglesia y escuela. En 1965 fue transformado en hotel de lujo por los reconocidos diseñadores Jaime Parladé y Duarte Pinto Coelho.

En 1976, el restaurante del hotel se convirtió en epicentro gastronómico bajo la dirección de Gustav Horcher, hijo del legendario restaurador Otto Horcher. La familia Horcher era la propietaria del restaurante preferido por el Kaiser Guillermo II y el canciller Hindenburg. En 1943, huyendo de los bombardeos aliados sobre Berlín, Gustav abrió una sucursal en Madrid, que aún es un referente en la capital de España.

La impecable propuesta culinaria y el distinguido servicio que trasladaron a su local marbellí atrajeron a personalidades de todo el mundo y ello le valió la primera estrella Michelin en 1978, que mantuvo hasta 1995, fecha de su cierre.

Cuarenta años después, el edificio, ya en estado de ruina, fue adquirido con la intención de devolverle su antiguo esplendor. Se emprendió entonces un ambicioso proyecto de restauración que se prolongó durante siete años. Durante las obras salieron a la luz valiosos vestigios arqueológicos, desde una ermita, la de San Sebastián, hasta un camarín decorado con frescos originales del siglo XVI. Muchos de esos elementos se han conservado y hoy forman parte integral de los tres edificios del siglo XVIII que conforman el hotel actual.

Cada una de las 20 habitaciones del hotel es única y posee su propio ca-

Many of these elements have been preserved and are now an essential part of the three 18th-century buildings that make up the current hotel.

El excéntrico que hablaba con palomas místicas imaginó la electricidad tal y como se entiende hoy, mientras esbozaba el futuro en planos que solo dibujaba en su cabeza.

Nikola Tesla was driven by more than a passion for science. Like a contemporary alchemist, he tried (sometimes successfully) to rewrite the laws of what’s possible.

The eccentric inventor who held mystical conversations with pigeons envisioned electricity as it is understood today, while shaping the future through drawings that he made in his head only.

The son of an Orthodox priest and a resourceful housewife— from whom he claimed to have inherited his sharpness—he exhibited peculiar traits at a very young age. He learnt entire books by heart, mastered eight languages, and suffered from an unusual condition: blinding flashes of light accompanied by visions.

He could visualise inventions in his mind in detail—even their dimensions—and skip the sketching and planning stages. After his stint at university as a star student and a discussion with his professor about DC motor failures, he spent six years obsessed with the idea of improving the model. His work and sleep habits, coupled with his gambling addiction, led to a nervous breakdown.

AC CONTRA DC Y así se presentó ante la puerta de la compañía Edison Machine Works en Nueva York, con una carta de recomendación y cuatro céntimos en el bolsillo. Un escéptico Thomas Edison le ofreció cincuenta mil dólares para rediseñar el modelo de generación de corriente continua que defendía. Meses más tarde, al comprobar que Tesla había mejorado tanto el rendimiento como la eficiencia del generador, rompió su promesa y le negó su justa recompensa: «Tesla, usted no entiende nuestro humor estadounidense».

Y tanto que no lo entendía. El hombre no tenía tiempo ni para dormir ni para echar cuentas: primaba la ciencia. Comenzó a trabajar en su idea de motor AC y la patentó.

La compañía rival, Westinghouse Electric, compró su diseño por sesenta mil dólares en acciones, efectivo y derechos. Los costes de litigio entre Westinghouse y la empresa de Edison fueron tan altos que Tesla –agradecido con el hombre que no intentó aprovecharse de él– renunció a su contrato para salvar a su socio. AC VS. DC He turned up one day at the Edison Machine Works company in New York, carrying a letter of recommendation and four cents in his pocket. A sceptical Thomas Edison offered him fifty thousand dollars to redesign the DC generator model he defended. Months later, upon finding that Tesla had improved both the performance and the efficiency of the generator, he broke his promise and denied him his fair reward: “Tesla, you don’t understand our American sense of humour.”

He really didn’t understand it. The man had no time to sleep or to settle accounts: science always came first. He started working on his AC motor idea and patented it. Edison’s rival company, Westinghouse Electric Corp., bought his design for sixty thousand dollars in shares, cash, and royalties. The litigation costs between Westinghouse and the Edison company were so high that Tesla—ever grateful to the man who didn’t try to take advantage of him—gave up his contract to save his partner. He won the War of the Currents but was defeated by the fierce capital.

T H E G R E AT V I S I O N Once alternating current was consolidated, he turned to the study of high-frequency currents and wireless transmission. He patented a lamp without filament, invented the coil that bears his name, and presented a radio-controlled boat.

The futurist was already referring to “obedient machines” and “automatons that would think for themselves” at the time, all before an audience unable to distinguish between magic and science. He formed strong friendships in his lab, including one with writer Mark Twain, who considered his asynchronous motor invention as “the most valuable patent since the telephone.”

Soon came his most ambitious project: the Wardenclyffe Tower, a wooden and copper colossus designed to transmit radio messages

EL EXILIO Brillante, poco rentable y peligrosamente adelantado a su tiempo, Tesla comenzó a apartarse de un mundo que no estaba preparado para sus ideas, aunque siguió desarrollando inventos y patentes adelantadas a su tiempo. He managed to get it going several times, but he encountered his Achilles’ heel again: money troubles. Marconi had already won the battle with his telegraph despite using seventeen of Tesla’s patents.

Investors got cold feet and the money evaporated. The so-called Million Dollar Folly remained like a beautiful and absurd skeleton, witnessing Tesla’s downfall. It was eventually blown up, shattering to pieces the vision of a man ahead of his time.

EXILE Brilliant, unprofitable, and dangerously ahead of his time, Tesla began to move away from a world that was not ready for his ideas, although he continued to develop trailblazing inventions and patents.

In his lectures, he spoke of a “world television”, a “death beam” and a “vertical electric plane without propellers”. Ostracised, he developed an obsessive-compulsive disorder, extreme sensitivity to noise, a fixation with number three, and an obsession with germs.

Near the end of his life, secluded in a room at the New Yorker Hotel, he became deeply attached to pigeons, especially a white female whom he claimed to love more than any human being. He would describe how one night the bird came into his room to say its goodbyes. He saw two powerful beams of light coming out of the bird’s eyes and, after it died in his hands, he understood that his work on Earth had come to an end.

«Afortunadamente». La palabra que más repite José Mercé cuando relata su carrera. Más de cincuenta años sobre los escenarios repletos de éxitos y recintos llenos hasta la bandera no han sido suficientes para conseguir que, por un momento, deje de sentirse afortunado. Un «suertudo» que logró hacer de la pasión su oficio y pasar de cantar en la parroquia de la Merced a conquistar primero los tablaos y después plazas enteras. Un generoso camino en el que ha hecho casi de todo. Con su nuevo disco, rinde homenaje a otro privilegiado que han podido compartir su arte con el mundo: Manuel Alejandro. En José Mercé canta a Manuel Alejandro, el cantaor revisita algunas de las canciones de amor más bellas de la historia de la música y las viste con compás flamenco para demostrar que el amor –como el cante– puede decirse de muchas maneras, pero solo emociona cuando se siente de verdad.

Fortunately is the word that José Mercé repeats constantly when he talks about his career. More than fifty years on stage garnering success and filling venues aren’t enough to make him stop feeling lucky for a moment. A “lucky man” who managed to turn his passion into a job and go from singing in La Merced church to conquering first the tablaos and then entire squares. It’s been a bountiful journey in which he has done almost everything. With his new album, he pays tribute to another exceptional man who was able to share his art with the world: Manuel Alejandro. «En la época de los setenta u ochenta, una mala crítica en los periódicos más leídos te dejaba sin comer cinco o seis meses»

Su relación con Manuel Alejandro es también una relación con las raíces que comparten. ¿De dónde nace este homenaje y qué hay dentro de él?

Manuel Alejandro es paisano mío, tengo la suerte de haber nacido en el mismo barrio que él, el de Santiago, y en la misma calle, la de la Merced. Él me conoce desde pequeño. Creo que este es un momento maravilloso para hacerle su homenaje, pequeño, porque yo creo que Manuel merece mucho más, pero tenía muchas ganas de llevar sus canciones al flamenco porque él es un gran flamenco. Cuando éramos jóvenes, siempre me contaba que estudiaba en su habitación escuchando a los grandes gitanos cantaores de Jerez por martinete, por seguiriya… en un tabanco que había debajo de su casa en aquella época. Para mí es el mejor escritor de letras de amor y de desamor de la historia, pero no de España, ni de Europa: ¡del mundo!

Cantar a Manuel Alejandro es cantar al amor en todas sus formas y cada tema parece casi una obra teatral. ¿Cómo ha sido encarnar esas emociones?

Manuel le hace un traje a medida a cada artista. Yo voy a hacer «Se nos rompió el amor», «Se muere por mí la niña», «Te desean», «Si a veces hablo de ti», «En carne viva»… De todos los grandes temas de Manuel, he cogido los que más puedo adaptar a mi flamenco. Para nada es sencillo hacer esta adaptación, pero creo que, teniendo corazón, sintiendo las cosas y gustándote lo que hace él, ya se tiene mucho.

Hemos hecho un disco que va a gustar y que está pensado en flamenco. Es un Manuel Alejandro cantado por José Mercé. La canción hecha flamenco.

Your friendship with Manuel Alejandro is also about the roots you share. How was the idea for the tribute born and what does it consist of?

Manuel Alejandro and I come from the same town. I’m lucky to have been born in the same neighbourhood as him, Santiago, and in the same street, La Merced. He has known me since I was a child. I think this is a wonderful moment to pay tribute to him—even if it’s a small one, because I think Manuel deserves much more. I really wanted to adapt his songs to flamenco because he’s a great flamenco lover. When we were young, he used to tell me that he revised in his room listening to Jerez’s great gypsy artists singing to the martinete and siguiriya beat from the tabanco downstairs. In my opinion, he’s the best love and heartbreak lyricist in history, but not only in Spain or Europe—in the whole world!

Singing Manuel Alejandro’s songs is singing about love in all its forms. Each track feels almost like a stage play. What was it like to embody those emotions?

Manuel makes a tailor-made costume for each artist. I will be singing Se nos rompió el amor, Se muere por mí la niña, Te desean, Si a veces hablo de ti, En carne viva, and more. Of all the great songs by Manuel, I’ve chosen the ones that I can adapt better to my flamenco style. It’s not easy to make this adaptation, but I think that if you do things from the heart, feeling and enjoying what you do, it’s already a lot. We’ve made an album that people will like, that’s thought out in the language of flamenco. It’s Manuel Alejandro sung by José Mercé. Song made flamenco.

¿Y cómo funciona en directo esa traducción al cante jondo?

Realmente me he sentido muy cómodo, porque me meto en ese papel, en el tema, y además con mi gente: mi grupo, mi guitarra, mi piano, mi percusión, mis palmas…

Todo lo hemos hecho muy flamenco en el escenario y la verdad es que donde esté el directo, que se quiten todos los discos... ¡El directo es muy calentito! Eso el público lo ha visto, disfrutan muchísimo con estos conciertos de José Mercé Canta a Manuel Alejandro. Son canciones muy escuchadas, pero al meterlas por bulerías, por tangos… todo cambia y llega de otra manera. Lo que estamos viviendo en los conciertos es increíble. Ver a la gente disfrutar es lo máximo.

Dice que ahora disfruta más que nunca de los escenarios. ¿Los años de experiencia le han dado licencia para ponerse a usted en el centro de cada actuación?

Cuando voy a salir al escenario sigo sintiendo eso que te entra por el estómago, esas mariposas… pero una vez que estoy arriba se me olvida, y solo pienso que, con que la gente disfrute la mitad de lo que lo hago yo, me conformo. Ahora, por supuesto, que con la experiencia disfruto más que antes, ya no estoy pendiente de las críticas, de que me pongan pa’ acá o me pongan pa’ allá. Lo que hago ahora es disfrutar y cantar –con todo respeto a mi público– para mí.

Cuando empezó, una mala crítica podía pesar durante meses. Hoy, con redes y opinadores, el ruido es constante. ¿Cómo ha vivido esa evolución?

En la época de los setenta u ochenta una mala crítica en los periódicos más leídos te dejaba sin comer cinco o seis meses. Teníamos miedo de los llamados flamencólogos de entonces. Afortunadamente, tuve la gran suerte de que, cuando hice el disco de Aire, que es el disco más vendido de la historia

del flamenco, empecé a hacer una música mucho más abierta. Desde finales de los noventa ya no dejaba que nadie dijera cómo tenía que cantar.

Su carrera empezó con apenas trece años, no hubo demasiado tiempo para explorar otras opciones o para siquiera ser un niño, con todo lo que ello conlleva. ¿Hay algo que sienta que le debe al pequeño José?

Yo llevo cantando toda mi vida, me acuerdo de que entré de niño cantor en la escolanía de la Merced de mi pueblo, en Jerez. Profesionalmente, con trece años, me fui a un tablao a Cádiz y, a los poquitos meses, ya me vine a Madrid al tablao de Torre Bermeja. Luego, afortunadamente, me llamó Antonio Gades y estuve diez años con él. Después, vino mi carrera en solitario. Si lo pienso, me hubiera gustado jugar más al fútbol, pero con trece me puse a cantar y ya no podía entrenar. Una pena… pero bueno. Estoy muy contento de que mi carrera haya ido poquito a poco. Hoy se lo debo todo al flamenco, eso está claro.

And how does this translation into cante jondo work in live concerts?

I’ve felt very comfortable because I get into the role, into the song, and I’m joined by my people: my band, my guitar, my piano, my percussion, my clapping. We’ve given it a very flamenco feel on stage, and it actually sounds better live than on record. The live is very vibrant! The audience has seen that; they enjoy these José Mercé Canta a Manuel Alejandro concerts very much. These are songs that are very popular, but when you sing them to the beat of bulerías or tangos everything changes and they resonate differently.

The concerts are giving us an incredible experience—seeing people enjoy is the best.

You say that you’re enjoying playing on stage more than ever before. Have your years of experience given you licence to put yourself at the centre of every performance?

When I go out on stage, I still get that fluttering feeling on my stomach, the butterflies. But once I’m up there I forget about it and just think that, if people enjoy it half as much as I do, then I’m happy. Of course, with my experience I now enjoy it better than before; I’m no longer aware of the criticisms, whether they say this or that about me. What I do now is to enjoy and sing for myself—fully honouring my audience, of course.

When you started, a bad review could weigh artists down for months. Today, with social media and opinion-givers, the noise is constant. How have you experienced that evolution?

In the 70s and 80s, a bad review in the most read newspapers meant not having food on the table for five or six months. We were afraid of the so-called flamencologists of that time. Fortunately, I was lucky that, when I recorded Aire—which is the best-selling album in the history of flamenco—I started making a much more wide-ranging music.

Since the end of the 90s, I didn’t let anyone tell me how I had to sing.

Your career began at just thirteen years old. There wasn’t too much time to explore other options or even be a child, with all that that entails. Is there anything you feel you owe little José?

I’ve been singing all my life. I remember that I joined La Merced choir school as a child in my town, Jerez. Professionally, I went to a tablao in Cádiz when I was thirteen, and a few months later, I arrived in Madrid, to the Torre Bermeja tablao. Then, fortunately, Antonio Gades called me, and I spent ten years working with him.

Then came my solo career. If I think about it, I would’ve preferred to play football, but at thirteen I started singing and couldn’t go to football practice anymore. A shame… but anyway. I’m very happy that my career has developed little by little.

Today I owe everything to flamenco, that’s clear.

“I risked a lot in my career, but fortunately it worked out well”

Y el flamenco también le debe mucho a usted. Se ha atrevido a experimentar y arriesgar con él. En su anterior disco, Oripandó, aparecen colaboraciones únicas, como la de Mala Rodríguez. El arte, venga de donde venga, cuando se mezcla se multiplica…

La verdad es que he arriesgado bastante en mi carrera, pero por fortuna me ha salido todo bien, igual me podría haber salido mal y me podrían haber quitado de esto.

Creo que Oripandó hay que escucharlo mucho para darse cuenta de que, desde que empieza hasta que termina, es puro flamenco, a veces con otra connotación, con otra música, pero todo entra en el ritmo del flamenco… lo que hago con Mala, lo que hago con Pablo López… Ese disco es una obra a la que yo le tengo un cariño muy especial. Ahí estuvimos Antonio Orozco y yo mucho tiempo trabajando en ello y es algo muy íntimo. Es una autobiografía, tiene que ver con mi vida.

And flamenco also owes a lot to you. You dared to experiment and take risks with it.

On your previous album, Oripandó, there are unique collaborations such as that with Mala Rodríguez. Art, wherever it comes from, when it blends it multiplies.

The truth is that I’ve risked a lot in my career, but fortunately everything worked out well; it could have gone wrong, and I could’ve had that taken away from me. I think Oripandó needs to be listened to a lot to realise that it’s pure flamenco from start to end, sometimes with a different connotation, with another music, but everything follows the rhythm of flamenco, like the song with Mala, or the one with Pablo López. I’m really fond of that album. Antonio Orozco and I worked on it for a long time, and it’s something very intimate. It’s an autobiography; it’s about my life.

Y después de tantos años, tantos discos y tantos éxitos, ¿qué le queda por cantar?

Afortunadamente, mientras pueda, me queda mucho por cantar. Lo bueno es que tengo mucha ilusión. El público es el que me dice que estoy aquí. Cuando ellos me digan que no, me tendré que ir, pero mientras sea así, aquí voy a estar, y con muchas ganas de hacer cosas.

Todavía me queda mucho por hacer y espero que me respete la salud y que pueda hacer todo lo que quiero.

And after so many years, so many albums, and so many hits, what else can you sing about?

Fortunately, I have a lot to sing about for as long as I can. The good thing is that I’m always very excited about it. The audience decides if I can keep on going.

When they say no to me, I’ll have to stop, but as long as it’s like this, I’ll be here, always eager to do things.

I still have a lot to do, and I hope that I can enjoy good health and do everything I wish to do.

La Romería de la Virgen de Fátima tradición viva y atractivo turístico en el corazón de Arona

Cada mes de mayo, Valle San Lorenzo se convierte en el escenario de una de las celebraciones más queridas de Arona: la Romería en Honor a la Virgen de Fátima. No es una romería más. Es la más antigua del municipio, una tradición nacida en 1957 que, con el paso de las décadas, se ha consolidado no solo como un símbolo de identidad para la comarca, sino también como un evento de especial interés turístico para quienes visitan el sur de Tenerife.

El paso por La Centinela regala una de las postales más icónicas de la jornada: una hilera multicolor que serpentea entre música, risas y aromas a productos locales. Desde aquí, la subida final hacia la Cruz de La Centinela invita tanto a admirar el paisaje que se abre sobre el valle como a formar parte de un momento cargado de simbolismo: la ofrenda floral y la bendición del municipio, un gesto que permanece inalterable desde hace décadas.

Hoy, más de sesenta años después, miles de personas continúan acompañando a la imagen de la Virgen en un recorrido que aúna emoción, folclore y un entorno natural privilegiado. Para quienes viajan a Arona durante estas fechas, la romería supone una inmersión auténtica en la cultura popular canaria: una oportunidad única de descubrir el espíritu festivo, cálido y acogedor que caracteriza a este municipio y que se ha convertido en uno de sus grandes atractivos culturales y turísticos.

Tras la ceremonia, la fiesta continúa con el esperado Almuerzo Romero, donde papas arrugadas, gofio amasado, plátanos, huevos duros y vino de la tierra se comparten en un ambiente festivo y familiar. Comer al aire libre, rodeado de música y de personas de todas las edades, es una experiencia que atrapa a quienes buscan conectar con la tradición canaria más genuina.

La celebración comienza en la Parroquia de San Lorenzo Mártir, donde la emoción se respira desde primera hora.

El sonido de las chácaras y los tambores marca el inicio del camino que asciende pausadamente hacia el Mirador de La Centinela, uno de los enclaves paisajísticos más emblemáticos de Arona. A medida que avanza la romería, el sendero se transforma en una estampa tradicional: carrozas engalanadas, grupos folclóricos, trajes típicos y visitantes que se suman a la fiesta con entusiasmo.

La Romería de la Virgen de Fátima no es solo un evento, sino una experiencia cultural y paisajística que refleja la esencia de Arona. E

l primer faro menorquín en encenderse fue el de Cavalleria, el 1 de marzo de 1857. Obra de Antonio López y Montalvo, nació para poner fin a siglos de tragedias: desde el XIV se contaban más de setecientos naufragios en aquella costa norte, azotada por tramontanas feroces. Su luz fija de segundo orden, firmada por la casa Sautter, fue un alivio inmediato, aunque no definitivo; los barcos seguían perdiéndose, y eso justificaría años después los faros de Favàritx y Punta Nati. En 1922 le cambiaron el corazón: se instaló una nueva óptica de 500 mm y grupos de dos destellos cada diez segundos. Fue también el último baluarte del petróleo en Baleares, hasta bien entrados los ochenta. El camino que hoy se usa para llegar fue un regalo tardío de aquella reforma.

he first Menorcan lighthouse to be lit was Cavalleria, on 1 March 1857. Created by Antonio López y Montalvo, it was built to put an end to centuries of tragedies. Since the 14th century, there had been more than 700 shipwrecks on that northern coast battered by unrelenting tramontana winds. Its second-order fixed lenses, manufactured by Sautter, were an immediate relief, although not definitive. Ships were still getting lost, justifying years later the Favàritx and Punta Nati lighthouses. In 1922, its heart was changed: new 500 mm lenses and sequences of two flashes every ten seconds. It was also the last lighthouse running on kerosene in the Balearic Islands until well into the eighties. The road used today to get there was a late gift of its redevelopment.

Dos años después, el 10 de julio de 1859, se iluminó el faro de Artrutx, en el extremo suroeste. Emili Pou lo diseñó con una elegancia discreta: óptica fija de cuarto orden y dos lentes giratorias que daban destellos cada tres minutos. Inicialmente, su lámpara bebía aceite de oliva, y la cueva submarina cercana hacía temblar la torre como si el mar protestara. En 1969 creció diecisiete metros, le pusieron contrafuertes y adquirió esa silueta única, casi muscular, que hoy distingue a la construcción. Curiosa anécdota: en 1860 los fareros recibieron orden de capturar fugitivos en la zona, pero respondieron que, sin armas, como mandaba el reglamento, poco podían hacer.

El 15 de agosto de 1860 le llegó el turno del faro de la Isla del Aire, otro proyecto de Emili Pou, padre de buena parte de los faros de Baleares, pues llegó a diseñar 25.

Durante la construcción de este. en abril de 1859, un bote naufragó y se llevó la vida de un marinero; el islote no perdonaba. Con sus 38 metros sobre el nivel del mar y 165 peldaños de caracol, fue durante más de un siglo la torre más alta de Baleares. Tres familias convivían allí en un aislamiento que a veces, dicen, rozaba la locura. En 1976 y gracias a la automatización, los fareros pudieron abandonar por fin aquel lugar convertido en hogar-prisión. Hoy brilla gracias a la energía solar y da destellos cada cinco segundos.

Ciutadella estrenó su faro el 30 de abril de 1863 y también va firmado por Pou. El mar entraba a chorros en las dependencias, así que levantaron un muro para defenderlo de la furia del poniente. Fue el cuarto de Baleares en electrificarse, el 1 de marzo de 1918, y hoy luce una moderna óptica acrílica de 400 mm que parece flotar sobre el agua. En el puerto de Maó, su faro se encendió el 20 de marzo de 1852. Se decidió que lo hiciera el mismo día que el faro de Na Pòpia, en Dragonera (Mallorca).

López y Montalvo lo situó junto a

una batería militar, y pronto llovieron quejas: los cañonazos pasaban rozando la torre y aterrorizaban a los fareros. En 1912 lo apagaron y colgaron un fanal plegable en un pescante; cuando tocaban prácticas de tiro, simplemente lo recogían. El viejo edificio cayó en 1917 y sus piedras se trasladaron a Favàritx. El 22 de julio de 1918 llegó la electricidad, y donde estuvo el pescante hoy se alza una torre de hormigón que saluda a yates, veleros, ferrys y cruceros.

El de Punta Nati, proyectado por Mauro Serret, se inauguró el 1 de septiembre de 1913 con una rapidez pasmosa: catorce meses.

Francia apretó tras el naufragio del buque General Chanzy en 1910, y España respondió. Usaba lámparas Pintsch berlinesas, formas cilíndricas en vez de polígonos, y aún conserva sus 3+1 destellos cada veinte segundos.

Cerca, un bufador lanza columnas de agua que han castigado el faro durante generaciones.

El benjamín de la isla ya es más que centenario: Favàritx. Vio la luz el 22 de septiembre de 1922 después de cinco años de obras interrumpidas por falta de fondos y pleitos de tierras. Mauro Serret lo dibujó, Miguel Massanet lo reformó, y fue el primero de hormigón armado en Baleares. Su óptica original de 2+1, fabricada por BBT, puede visitarse hoy en Portopí, Mallorca. Nacido para evitar nuevos naufragios, se alza sobre pizarra negra como un centinela solitario del norte.

Siete torres, siete historias que llevan más de siglo y medio guiando barcos y parte del Skyline de Menorca. Desde Cavalleria en 1857 hasta Favàritx en 1922, cada una guarda naufragios evitados, fareros valientes, cañonazos esquivados y temporales en primera fila.

La próxima vez que sobrevuelen la isla, búsquenlos: siguen ahí, parpadeando con la misma calma con que han visto pasar guerras, revoluciones y miles de turistas. En Menorca, hasta la luz tiene raíces.

Two years later, on 10 July 1859, the Artrutx lighthouse lit up in the far southwest. Designer Emili Pou gave it an understated elegance: fourth-order fixed lenses and two rotating lenses that flashed every three minutes. Initially, its lamp ran on olive oil, and the nearby underwater cave shook the tower as if the sea protested. In 1969, it grew seventeen metres taller, got buttresses, and acquired that unique, almost muscular silhouette, its distinguishing feature. Fun fact: in 1860 the lighthouse keepers were ordered to capture fugitives in the area, but they replied that, without weapons, as mandated by the regulations, they could do little.

On 15 August 1860 it was the turn of the Isla del Aire lighthouse, another project by Emili Pou, father of most of the lighthouses on the Balearic Islands, since he ended up designing 25. During its construction in April 1859, a boat shipwrecked, taking the life of a sailor; the islet was unforgiving. Standing 38 metres above sea level with a 165-step spiral staircase, it was the tallest tower in the Balearic Islands for over a century. Three families lived there in isolation which sometimes, they say, bordered on madness. In 1976, thanks to automation, the keepers were finally able to leave that place that had turned into a home-prison. Today it shines bright thanks to solar energy, flashing every five seconds.

Ciutadella premièred its lighthouse on 30 April 1863 which is also signed by Pou. The sea was pouring into the premises, so they erected a wall to defend it from the fury of the poniente wind. It was the fourth lighthouse on the Balearic Islands to be electrified (on 1 March 1918) and today it has a modern 400 mm acrylic lens that seems to float on the water. In the port of Maó, its lighthouse lit up on 20 March 1852. It was decided that it would do it the same day as the lighthouse of Na Pòpia, in Dragonera (Mallorca). López and Montalvo built it next to an artillery battery, and soon complaints

ensued: the cannonballs whistled past the tower and terrorised the keepers. In 1912, they turned it off and hung a folding lantern on a davit; when it was time for shooting practice, they simply put it away.

The old building fell in 1917 and its stones were moved to Favàritx.

Electricity was introduced on 22 July 1918, and now a concrete tower stands where the davit once did, greeting passing yachts, sail boats, ferries, and cruise ships.

The one in Punta Nati, designed

by Mauro Serret, opened on 1 September 1913 at a staggering construction speed: fourteen months.

France put pressure on the island after the sinking of the General Chanzy in 1910, and Spain responded. It used Pintsch lamps from Berlin—cylindrical shapes instead of polygons—and still retains its 3+1 flashes every twenty seconds.

Nearby, a blowhole creates water columns that have punished the lighthouse for generations.

The youngest member of the family is already more than a hundred years old: Favàritx. It opened on 22 September 1922 after five years of work interrupted due to lack of funds and land disputes. Mauro Serret drew it, Miguel Massanet renovated it, and it was the first one on the Balearic Islands made with reinforced concrete. Its original 2+1 lenses, manufactured by BBT, can be visited today in Portopí, Mallorca. Built to avoid new shipwrecks, it rises on black slate like a lone sentry from the north.

Seven towers, and their seven stories, which have been guiding sailors for more than a century and a half and are part of Menorca’s skyline. From Cavalleria in 1857 to Favàritx in 1922, they have prevented shipwrecks, housed brave keepers, dodged cannonballs, and seen storms from the front seat. The next time you fly over the island, look for them: they’re still there, still blinking after witnessing wars, revolutions, and thousands of tourists passing by. In Menorca, even the light has roots.

urante casi un siglo, el XVIII, Menorca estuvo bajo soberanía del reino de Gran Bretaña: desde la conquista de 1708 por parte de una escuadra angloholandesa hasta el tratado de Amiens de 1802. El hotel del que vamos a hablar en este número dedicado a la isla es hijo de ese periodo.

uring much of the eighteenth century, Menorca was under the rule of the Kingdom of Great Britain, beginning with its capture by an Anglo-Dutch fleet in 1708 and ending with the Treaty of Amiens in 1802.

In this issue focused on the island, we will be discussing a hotel that originated during that era.

El último Premio Planeta ha recaído en Juan del Val, que en Vera, una historia de amor, traza un relato de pasiones y contradicciones. La novela, ya envuelta en debate público, es hija del estilo directo de su autor y de su apuesta por historias accesibles y emocionalmente intensas.

Del Val, acostumbrado a ponerse el mundo por montera, habla sin filtros sobre la crítica, la popularidad y la fuerza de los personajes que le inspiran.

The latest Premio Planeta prize was awarded to Juan del Val for Vera, una historia de amor, where he tells a story of passion and contradictions. Already the subject of a public debate, the novel reflects its author’s straightforward style and his commitment to crafting narratives that are both accessible and emotionally powerful. Del Val, who marches to the beat of his own drum, addresses without filters the criticism, the popularity, and the strength of the characters that inspire him.

El Premio Planeta se convierte cada año en un gran acontecimiento mediático, pero parece que este año la cosa se ha ido de madre…

Esperaba críticas, las que siempre conlleva este premio, pero en mi caso este tsunami se ha multiplicado por dos o por tres. Lo acepto, no hay nada que decir. Para mí lo importante son los lectores que se acercan a la novela y disfrutan.

La polémica forma parte de la sociedad en la que estamos y lo que hago es aceptar este hecho.

De todos modos, no es ni su primera novela ni su primer premio. No debería sentirse incómodo.

No me siento incómodo en absoluto. Llevo siete novelas escritas y tengo una trayectoria como autor.

The Premio Planeta is always one of the greatest media events of the year, but it seems that this year things got really out of hand.

I expected the criticism, which is inherent to this award, but in my case the tsunami has doubled or even tripled. I just take it; there’s nothing to say. What’s important to me are the readers who pick up the novel and enjoy it. Controversy is part of today’s society; I accept it.

In any case, this isn’t your first novel, nor is it your first prize. You shouldn’t feel uncomfortable.

I don’t feel uncomfortable at all.

I’ve written seven novels and have a career as an author. I received the Premio Primavera in 2019. Now I

Me dieron el Premio Primavera en 2019. Ahora tengo esta emocionante oportunidad porque he ganado el Premio Planeta. Es algo muy bonito para un autor.

Lo que sí es novedoso es la cantidad de personas que señalan con el dedo lo que no hay que leer. ¿No es más fácil dejar que la gente lea lo que quiera?

Hay un cierto trasfondo de falta de espíritu democrático. Cuando pastoreas a la gente y les dices lo que tienen que leer y, sobre todo, lo que no, es un ejercicio de prepotencia que no puedo entender. Hay algo bueno en sí mismo en que la gente vaya a las librerías y compre el libro que quiera. ¿Qué hacen algunos para paliar su frustración por que el público no acepta lo que ellos hacen? Decir que lo que el público acepta es malo.

Aparte de los criterios subjetivos a la hora de valorar una obra, podemos decir que hay novelas buenas y novelas malas. Hay novelas comerciales muy buenas y novelas no comerciales muy buenas.

Cuando alguien afirma que algo es malo solo porque la gente lo compra mucho, se está situando en un plano de superioridad intelectual que me parece patético.

Hablando de Vera, su novela, la protagonista forma parte de la alta sociedad sevillana y rompe con las normas de su entorno para empezar una relación con un joven humilde. Estas situaciones son un combustible enorme para cualquier historia.

Todo lo que nace del interior, de las tripas y del deseo tiene una potencia vital enorme y es un buen material para una novela. En el caso de Vera, parte de una situación privilegiada que la oprime por el hastío que le genera. Decide marcharse, conocer más cosas y más personas. Dentro de ese proceso está el descubrimiento de otro personaje, Antonio, que le ayuda a cambiar la percepción de lo que es y de lo que quiere ser.

have this exciting opportunity because I’ve won the Premio Planeta. That’s a wonderful experience for any author.

What’s changed is the amount of annoying people that are telling others what not to read. Isn’t it easier to let people read what they want?

There’s a certain lack of democratic spirit underneath that.

I find it hard to understand the arrogance behind treating people like sheep and telling them what they should read, or shouldn’t read especially. There’s something positive in people going to bookshops and buying the books they want to buy. What do some people do to ease their frustration when their actions aren’t accepted by the public? They claim that what the public approves of is wrong. When judging a piece of literature, novels can be classified as good or bad, beyond subjective judgment. There are very good mainstream novels, as well as very good non-mainstream novels. When someone claims that something is bad just because a lot of people buy it, they’re considering themselves intellectually superior to others and that seems pathetic to me.

Speaking of your novel, the protagonist, Vera, belongs to Sevilla’s high society and breaks their social norms to start a relationship with a man of modest origins.

These circumstances can really fuel a story.

Everything that comes from the heart, from the guts, or from desire carries a huge vital force and makes good novel material. In the case of Vera, she starts off from a privileged position that weighs her down, making her feel utterly bored. She decides to leave everything behind to experience new things and get to know more people. During that process she meets another character, Antonio, who helps her change her perception of what she is and what she wants to be.

There are many Veras out there, either potentially or actually.

There are many women at that point in their life where they’ve reached a certain age and are more experienced. They have outgrown the folly of their twenties, so to speak, and they know better who they are and where they’re going.

Very important changes take place at that moment. They may leave the place where they are or stay and act differently, but they start knowing themselves better.

You like strong female characters. What do you find inspiring about them?

I like writing about women; I find their complexity fascinating. Without falling into clichés, there’s some of that there. I’m captivated by the female universe, from the aesthetic to the drive with which they engage with things. I’ve been lucky enough to meet great women, and I like building female characters in almost all my novels.

Was it challenging to create a female voice without making it stereotyped?

I didn’t experience it as a challenge. The ones who must judge this way of writing are the women themselves. That’s where I’m sure of myself. If the women who have read my novels had told me “You can really tell that this was written by a man”, I’d be doing it wrong.

Sevilla features in your novel frequently. How did it help you when you were developing the story?

I love Sevilla and I visit it very often.

It’s a beautiful setting to talk about passion. Vera contains a great deal of passion, so I thought it was the perfect place for the story. Plus, as I know the city, I find it easy to set a novel in such an environment, in real places, such as bars and restaurants that actually exist.

You offer a portrait of local high society. Weren’t you afraid of ruffling some feathers?

No, because I’m familiar with it.

Hay muchísimas mujeres en ese momento vital que tiene que ver con una edad y un bagaje.

Han dejado atrás, por decirlo así, las tonterías de los veinte años y saben mejor cómo son y adónde van. En ese momento se producen cambios muy importantes. Puede ser que se marchen de donde están o que se queden de otra manera, pero empiezan a conocerse mejor a sí mismas.

Le gustan los personajes femeninos fuertes. ¿Qué le inspira de ellas?

Me gusta escribir sobre mujeres; tienen una complejidad que me atrae muchísimo. Sin caer en tópicos, hay algo de eso ahí.

Me fascina el universo femenino, desde lo estético hasta la pulsión con la que se relacionan con las cosas. He tenido la suerte de conocer a grandes mujeres y me gusta construir personajes femeninos en casi todas mis novelas.

Hace un retrato de la alta sociedad local. ¿No temió meterse en un jardín?

No, porque la conozco. Hay algo opresor en la alta sociedad de muchas ciudades, y eso es perfectamente visible. Respecto a algún personaje pintoresco que aparece, como el que no tiene un duro y está en todos los sitios, en Sevilla es algo muy reconocible.

En la novela hay una buena mezcla de géneros. ¿Qué quería provocar?

Cualquier cosa que tenga que ver con mis tramas es una excusa para mostrar personajes y lo que les pasa. Soy un autor de personajes y de lo que les ocurre por dentro, para hablar de conceptos universales como la culpa, el deseo o el miedo, por ejemplo. Me interesan más las motivaciones en sí que los hechos. Quiero mantener el interés del lector y el mío propio a medida que escribo.

Hablando de motivaciones, Vera es una mujer que quiere ser libre. ¿La resignación debería estar en el Código Penal?

Buena pregunta… Yo creo que debería convertirse en un delito. Si te resignas, estás haciendo algo mal. No sé si mereces la cárcel, pero mereces no pasártelo bien cuando te miras al espejo.

¿Ha sido un reto construir una voz femenina sin caer en lugares comunes?

No lo he vivido como un reto.

Quien tiene que poner en valor esa forma de escribir son las propias mujeres. Ahí es donde estoy seguro de mí mismo. Si las mujeres que han leído mis novelas me hubieran dicho «se nota que esto lo ha escrito un hombre», yo lo estaría haciendo mal.

Sevilla tiene mucha presencia en la novela. ¿Qué le aportaba en su concepción de esta historia?

Me encanta Sevilla y voy mucho por allí. Es un escenario precioso para hablar de pasiones. En Vera hay bastante pasión y me parecía un lugar perfecto para ello.

Además, como conozco la ciudad, me resulta fácil situar una novela en un entorno así. Permite ambientarla en lugares reales, como bares y restaurantes que existen de verdad.

There’s a good mix of genres in the novel. What were you looking for?

The plots I devise are always an excuse to portray the characters and show what happens to them. As an author, I focus on the characters and what happens inside them to talk about universal concepts such as guilt, desire, or fear, for example. I’m more interested in the motivations than the facts. I want to keep the reader’s interest and my own as I write.

Speaking of motivations, Vera is a woman who wants to be free.

Should resigning oneself be considered a criminal offence?

Good question! I think it should be a crime. If you resign yourself, you’re doing something wrong. I don’t know if you deserve to go to prison, but you deserve a hard time when looking at yourself in the mirror.

n the heart of Chiado, Lisbon, Fernando Pessoa sits motionless at his bronze table in Café A Brasileira, as if waiting to have a chat with his heteronyms. Founded in 1905, this coffee bar was a refuge for modernism, embodying the cultural beat of the country. There, Pessoa turned melancholy—the saudade that permeates everything—into poetry. Today, tourists and locals alike continue to visit the place reverently, as if entering a lay church of thought.

The city of Madrid has always had a certain calling for literary gatherings. Café Comercial, opened in 1887 in front of the Bilbao roundabout, was for decades a sanctuary for writers such as Antonio Machado and Ignacio Aldecoa. Among its mirrors and velvet armchairs, generations of wordsmiths and journalists who spoke of the mundane and the sublime were forged.

A few streets away, Café de Gijón exuded a bohemian spirit. Since the end of the 19th century, Ramón y Cajal, Pío Baroja, Pérez Galdós and Valle-Inclán frequented its ta-

Para él, la aviación no era solo una hazaña mecánica, sino una experiencia ética; y El principito no es una fábula para niños, sino una respuesta poética a aquella pregunta.

At a time when flying was a technical feat and held the promise for conquering the modern world, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry asked himself an honest yet uncomfortable question: what does humankind lose when man wins? A pilot, writer, aviator, and moralist, he embodies one of the most tragic schisms of the 20th century: progress versus meaning. He considered aviation not just a technical achievement but an ethical experience. The Little Prince is not a children’s fable, but a poetic answer to that question.

aint-Exupéry nació en Lyon, en 1900, cuando la aviación era aún un experimento. Para su generación, el aire era una nueva frontera en disputa: la conquista del territorio a través del ingenio y el espíritu moderno. Pero, ya en su juventud, Antoine vio en el cielo no una simple metáfora de poder, sino una pista de despegue para las ideas.

Como piloto de la Aéropostale –la compañía de correo aéreo que recorría «la Línea» que unía Europa, África y Sudamérica–, formó su espíritu en el coraje y en el deber, pero también conoció la soledad y la fragilidad. De aquellas experiencias nacieron Correo del Sur (1929) y Vuelo nocturno (1931), retratos de pilotos heroicos y discretos. El verdadero punto de inflexión llegaría años después, cuando el propio Saint-Exupéry protagonizó el episodio que inspiraría su obra más universal.

En diciembre de 1935, durante un intento de récord de tiempo de vuelo entre París y Saigón, su monoplano Caudron C-630 Simoun cayó en pleno Sahara. Sin agua ni comida, junto con su mecánico André Prévot, sobrevivió cuatro días en la arena, hasta que un beduino los rescató. El desierto –lugar del despojo, el silencio, el encuentro con uno mismo– reaparecería años más tarde en las primeras páginas de El principito: un aviador que, tras un accidente, se

aint-Exupéry was born in Lyon in 1900, when aviation was still in its experimental phase. For his generation, the sky was a new contested frontier to conquer territory through ingenuity and a modern spirit. In his youth, Antoine already saw in the skies not a mere metaphor for power, but a runway for ideas to take off. As a Aéropostale pilot— the airmail company that travelled the “line” that united Europe, Africa and South America—he shaped his spirit with courage and duty but also knew of loneliness and fragility. Southern Mail (1929) and Night Flight (1931), portraits of heroic and discreet pilots, were created on the back of that experience.

The real turning point in Saint-Exupéry’s life would come years later, when he starred in the event that would inspire his most universal work.

In December 1935, while attempting a record flight time between Paris and Saigon, his Caudron C-630 Simoun monoplane crashed in the Sahara. With no water or food, he survived four days stranded with his mechanic André Prévot, until a Bedouin rescued them.

The desert—a place of dispossession, silence, and self-encounter— would feature again years later in the first pages of The Little Prince: an aviator who, after an accident, meets a child fallen from the stars.

The imaginary encounter was his

El pequeño príncipe recorre planetas poblados por personajes simbólicos –un solitario rey sin súbditos, un hombre de negocios obsesionado con poseer estrellas, o un farolero atrapado en una labor sirifica sin sentido– que representan los defectos del mundo adulto. Frente a ellos, la pureza, la curiosidad y la ternura: «Solo con el corazón se puede ver bien; lo esencial es invisible a los ojos».

Entre los símbolos más conmovedores de la obra está la rosa, la flor caprichosa y frágil que el Principito deja en su planeta antes de iniciar su viaje. Este personaje encarna la figura de Consuelo Suncin, la esposa salvadoreña de Saint-Exupéry, una mujer fuerte y contradictoria con la que vivió una relación apasionada y tormentosa. La rosa, amada, temida, representa ese amor imperfecto: «Fue el tiempo que pasaste con tu rosa lo que la hizo tan importante», escribió el autor, transformando su experiencia personal en una lección universal.

Cada planeta que visita el Principito puede leerse como una etapa de la vida del propio Saint-Exupéry.

Los lugares que sobrevoló como piloto –los desiertos africanos, los Andes, el Atlántico– se convirtieron en escenarios interiores. El viaje exterior del aviador se convirtió en un viaje interior: un recorrido por las debilidades y grandezas del ser humano. En Tierra de hombres, ya había escrito que «el hombre se descubre cuando mide sus fuerzas con el obstáculo». En El principito, esa lucha adopta forma de fábula.

Lo que antes era épica aérea se convierte en filosofía.

El desenlace del libro tiene una raíz íntima que se remonta a la muerte de su hermano menor, François, cuando Saint-Exupéry tenía quince años. El niño murió tras una larga enfermedad, en calma, mientras su hermano mayor lo acompañaba. Aquella escena lo marcó de manera indeleble: la idea de una muerte serena, no violenta, asumida como un regreso. Cuando el Principito permite que la serpiente lo muerda para dejar atrás su cuerpo y regresar a su planeta, el gesto repite la actitud del joven François: una aceptación del tránsito más que una derrota.

En 1944, agotado, aunque fiel a su deber, Saint-Exupéry regresó al frente como piloto de reconocimiento. El 31 de julio despegó de Córcega en su avión Lockheed P-38 Lightning, pero nunca volvió.

This character was inspired by Consuelo Suncin, Saint-Exupéry’s Salvadoran wife, a strong woman full of contradictions with whom he lived a passionate and stormy relationship. The beloved and feared rose represents that imperfect love. “It’s the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important,” the author wrote, transforming his personal experience into a universal lesson.

Every planet that the Little Prince visits can be interpreted as a stage in the life of Saint-Exupéry himself. The places he flew over as a pilot—the African deserts, the Andes, the Atlantic—were also inner scenarios. The aviator’s outer journey became an inner journey, a journey through the weaknesses and greatness of the human being. In Wind, Sand and Stars, he had already written that “self-discovery comes when man measures himself against an obstacle”. In The Little Prince, this struggle takes the

form of a fable. What was once a flying epic becomes philosophy.

The end of the book has an intimate aspect related to his younger brother, François, who died when Saint-Exupéry was fifteen years old. The boy died calmly after a long illness while his older brother accompanied him.

That experience left an indelible mark on him: the idea of a serene, non-violent death, accepted as returning. When the Little Prince allows the snake to bite him to leave his body behind and return to his planet, the gesture replicates young François’ attitude: coming to terms with the transit rather than considering it a defeat.

In 1944, exhausted yet being loyal to his duty, Saint-Exupéry returned to active service as a reconnaissance pilot. On 31 July, he took off from Corsica aboard his Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft, but he never returned. His disappearance over the Mediterranean put an end to his story. Years later, the remains of his aircraft were found near Marseille, confirming his fate. Eight decades later, his questions remain valid. In a fast-paced world, which sometimes confuses connection with communication and speed with progress, the echo of his questions still resonates: what’s the point of flying if we don’t know where we’re headed?

Saint-Exupéry left no answers but gave us a compass.

La precaución pasa a ser una virtud en sí misma y la hipótesis ya se ha hecho realidad: en 2015, el Centro Internacional de Investigación Agrícola en Zonas Secas (ICARDA) sufrió los estragos de la guerra en su país, Siria. Con las existencias diezmadas, solicitó recuperar parte de sus depósitos en la bóveda de semillas, única vía para recuperar la biodiversidad de las cosechas locales tras aquella ola de violencia. El incidente es tan solo un ejemplo de la magnitud de las instalaciones de Svalbard, abiertas a los bancos de semillas con deseos de colaborar en el proyecto.

La custodia del material es gratuita y la propiedad de las semillas pertenece a quien las deposita, siempre y cuando sea un banco genético público y reconocido. La iniciativa, por tanto, es más que una promesa para garantizar la variabilidad genética en tiempos donde la seguridad alimentaria depende de un destino lleno de retos, conflictos e imprevistos.

alencia se prepara para convertirse en epicentro cultural del Mediterráneo con una de las propuestas artísticas más potentes del próximo año. En pleno corazón de la ciudad, el Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero (CAHH) se consolida como una visita imprescindible para cualquier viajero que disfrute del arte contemporáneo, la arquitectura y los espacios singulares.

El museo —instalado en el restaurado Palacio Valeriola, un edificio histórico rehabilitado por el estudio ERRE Arquitectura— exhibe

parte de la colección privada de la mecenas y coleccionista Hortensia Herrero, una selección que incluye más de 100 obras de más de 50 artistas presentes en instituciones de referencia como el MoMA, la Tate Modern o el Pompidou.

El primer cuatrimestre de 2026 será, además, el último para ver la colección tal y como se inauguró. A partir del 28 de abril, el CAHH abrirá sus puertas a una muestra excepcional: una exposición temporal dedicada a Anselm Kiefer, uno de los artistas vivos más importantes del panorama internacional.

Anselm Kiefer en Valencia: una cita única

Kiefer, que actualmente ya cuenta con tres obras expuestas en el Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero, ha preparado junto con el director artístico del museo, Javier Molins,

un recorrido que ocupará seis salas con diez obras de gran formato.

La exposición pondrá el foco en los paisajes — tema vertebral en la obra de Kiefer—, siempre entrelazados con historia, mitología y literatura.

En palabras del propio artista: «Yo pienso en imá-

genes. Los poemas me ayudan; son como boyas en el mar», frase que ilumina su forma de navegar entre referentes visuales y narrativos.

Entre las piezas destacadas se encuentra una de las mayores obras creadas por Kiefer hasta la fecha: Danaë, un lienzo monumental de más de trece metros de ancho. La pintura reproduce el interior del aeropuerto berlinés de Tempelhof mientras incorpora la metáfora mitológica de la lluvia dorada que Zeus envía sobre Dánae.

Exhibida únicamente una vez en Nueva York en 2022, esta será la primera ocasión en que Danaë podrá contemplarse en Europa, lo que convierte la visita al CAHH en una oportunidad irrepetible para los viajeros.

Una representación de la compañía estuvo en Estoril donde se entregaron los premios de 2025 de la asociación de compañías regionales europeas coincidiendo con la Asamblea General de la entidad. Esta asociación está formada por más de 150 miembros entre los que se encuentran fabricantes, proveedores, aeropuertos, etc. y 50 aerolíneas regionales de toda Europa.

El premio ha sido concedido a ANEM porque “ha demostrado un claro compromiso con el fomento y el impulso de iniciativas innovadoras y tecnológicas siempre que sea posible para hacer avanzar su negocio y mejorar continuamente”, según explicaba el jurado en el momento de anunciar el veredicto. A recoger el galardón subió al estrado el director general de ANEM, Fermín Tirado.

Air Nostrum se consolida como la compañía regional europea que más premios ha recogido en la historia de la ERA con diez distinciones. La aerolínea valenciana llega esta cifra récord tras lograr seis premios Oro (1999, 2002/3, 2003/4,2007/8,2011/2 y el último en 2019, y dos bronces (2014 y 2015) a los que se suma el reconocimiento de 2023 en el que recibió el premio a la Responsabilidad Social Corporativa y el que ayer recibió ANEM en Estoril.

Air Nostrum Engineering and Maintenance Operations (ANEM) has received the European Regions Airline Association (ERA) award in the Innovation category. Air Nostrum’s representatives attended the 2025 ERA awards ceremony in Estoril, which was held during the organisation’s Annual General Meeting.

The trade association is made up of more than 150 members including manufacturers, suppliers, and airports, plus 50 regional airlines from all over Europe.

The award was given to ANEM because “it has demonstrated a clear commitment to promoting and fostering innovative and technological initiatives wherever possible to advance and continuously improve its business”, as explained by the jury at the time of announcing its final decision. ANEM’s Managing Director Fermín Tirado took to the stage to accept the award.

In his acceptance speech, Fermín Tirado said: “We are proud to have made significant achievements in innovation. This award is a testament to our team’s hard work and dedication. We are committed to continuing to drive innovation and technology in the aviation industry. We look forward to further expanding the innovation boundaries in the coming years.”

The most awarded European airline

With ten accolades, Air Nostrum establishes itself as the European regional airline that has received the most awards in the history of ERA. The Valencian airline reaches this record high after receiving six Gold Awards (1999, 2002/3, 2003/4, 2007/8, 2011/2, and the latest in 2019), and two Bronze awards (2014 and 2015), as well as the 2023 Corporate Social Responsibility award and the prize ANEM received yesterday in Estoril.

tras otros jugaban en la calle, imaginaba aviones convencido de que algún día estaría ahí arriba. Su historia es la de alguien que, con esfuerzo y pasión, ha convertido una vocación infantil en una carrera llena de retos, aprendizajes y satisfacciones.

Hoy, a las puertas de convertirse en comandante de Air Nostrum, Oliver sigue disfrutando de cada despegue como si fuera el primero, valorando la libertad y la responsabilidad que implica pilotar. Pero su vida no solo gira en torno a la aviación: su compromiso con los demás se refleja en su labor como voluntario, acompañando a Sol y aprendiendo de ella el verdadero sentido de la empatía y la humanidad.

As a child, while others were playing in the street, Oliver Becker daydreamed about planes, convinced that someday he would be up in the sky. His story is that of someone who turned his childhood aspiration into a career full of challenges, learnings, and fulfilment through effort and passion. Today, he’s about to become an Air Nostrum captain, and he continues to enjoy every takeoff as if it were his first, aware of the freedom and responsibility involved in piloting a plane.

But his life isn’t only about aviation. His commitment to others is reflected in his work as a volunteer, offering companionship to Sol and learning from her the true meaning of empathy and humanity.

¿Cómo surgió tu vocación por la aviación?

Como todo sueño de niño, el mío estaba literalmente por las nubes.

Mientras mis amigos jugaban al fútbol o al churro va, yo prefería coger unas tizas y dibujar en la acera de las calles de mi barrio un enorme avión, con su cabina de vuelo, sus asientos y hasta una pista imaginaria. Luego sentaba a toda la pandilla en el suelo y los invitaba a volar conmigo. Me pasaba horas mirando los aviones y las estelas que dejaban en el cielo, soñando con estar algún día ahí arriba. Así empezó todo… sin saberlo, estaba despegando mi vocación por la aviación.

How did you find your vocation for aviation?

Like every child’s dream, mine was literally in the clouds. While my friends were playing football or buck buck, I would grab some chalk and draw on my neighbourhood’s pavement a huge plane, with its cockpit, its seats, and even an imaginary runway. Then I would make the whole gang sit down on the floor and invite them to fly with me. I spent hours watching the planes and the trails they left in the sky, dreaming of being up there someday. That’s how it all started—without realising it, my vocation for aviation was taking off.

¿Cuál fue el momento clave para convertirte en piloto?

El momento clave llegó cuando, después de terminar el bachiller, empecé Ingeniería de Caminos, Canales y Puertos con la idea de especializarme en aeropuertos.

Pensaba que así podría ahorrar dinero y, poco a poco, pagarme los costosos estudios privados de piloto. Pero el destino tenía otros planes: mi padre tuvo un golpe de suerte y pudo ayudarme a cumplir mi verdadero sueño, estudiar para ser piloto. ¿Cómo fue tu formación y cuáles consideras que fueron los mayores retos durante ese proceso?

Cuando uno es joven, los retos son en realidad las mayores oportunidades para alcanzar tus sueños. Empecé mi formación con la licencia de Piloto Privado dentro de un curso Integrado para convertirme en Piloto Comercial. Fue un camino exigente, lleno de estudio, disciplina y muchas horas de vuelo, pero cada esfuerzo mereció la pena. Después tuve la oportuni-

dad de trabajar varios años como Instructor de vuelo, una etapa que me permitió seguir aprendiendo cada día y compartir mi pasión por la aviación con otros que, como yo, soñaban con volar. ¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas de tu trabajo como piloto?

Lo que más disfruto de mi trabajo como piloto es esa sensación única de libertad cada vez que el avión despega. Ver el mundo desde arriba, atravesar las nubes y contemplar un amanecer o una puesta de sol desde la cabina es algo que nunca deja de emocionarme. También me encanta la responsabilidad que conlleva, el trabajo en equipo y saber que cada vuelo es una nueva oportunidad para hacer lo que siempre soñé desde niño: volar.

¿Cuáles son las mayores responsabilidades que conlleva tu puesto?

Ser piloto implica una gran responsabilidad. No solo llevas un avión, sino también la seguridad y la confianza de todas las personas que van a bordo. Cada decisión, por pequeña que parezca, tiene un peso enorme. Mantener la calma, seguir los procedimientos con precisión y estar siempre preparado es parte del día a día. Pero lejos de asustarme, esa responsabilidad me motiva. Saber que tantas personas confían en mí me impulsa a dar siempre lo mejor de mí mismo y a seguir aprendiendo. Es una gran responsabilidad, sí, pero también el mayor orgullo de mi vida: poder hacer realidad el sueño que empezó con unas tizas en la acera y las estelas de los aviones en el cielo.

What was the turning point to become a pilot?

The turning point came when, after finishing secondary school, I started a degree in Civil Engineering with the idea of specialising in airports. I thought that this way I could save up money and, little by little, pay for the expensive private pilot training. But fate had other plans. Fortune smiled on my father, and he was able to help me fulfil my true dream: training to become a pilot.

How was your training and what do you think were the biggest challenges during that process?

When you’re young, challenges are actually the greatest opportunities to achieve your dreams. I started my Private Pilot License training as part of an integrated course to become a commercial pilot. It was a demanding path, with lots of studying, discipline, and many flight hours, but it was all worth the effort. Then I had the opportunity to work for several years as a Flight Instructor, an experience

that allowed me to continue learning every day and share my passion for aviation with others who dreamt of flying like me.

What do you enjoy most about your job as a pilot?

What I enjoy most about my job as a pilot is that unique feeling of freedom every time the plane takes off. Seeing the world from above, piercing through the clouds, and watching a sunrise or a sunset from the cockpit is something that never fails to thrill me. I also love the responsibility that comes with it, as well as the teamwork, and knowing that every flight is a new opportunity to do what I always dreamt of as a child: flying.

What are the greatest responsibilities that your position entails?

Being a pilot comes with great responsibility. You’re not only in charge of a plane, but also the safety and confidence of all the people on board. Every decision, however small it may seem, carries enormous weight. Staying calm,

following procedures to the letter, and always being prepared is part of everyday life. But far from scaring me off, that responsibility motivates me. Knowing that so many people trust me drives me to always give my best and to keep on learning. It’s indeed a great responsibility, but also the greatest source of pride in my life: to be able to realise the dream that began with chalk drawings on the pavement and the trails of aircraft in the sky.

You’re in the process of being promoted to captain.

Can you tell us how that change is made?

Yes, I’m in the process of being promoted to captain, a very important step in any pilot’s career.

It’s a change that requires a lot of preparation, experience, and professional maturity. After accumulating the necessary flight hours and mastering each procedure as a co-pilot, it’s time to take command and make decisions from the left side of the cockpit. It’s not

Estás en pleno proceso de ascenso a comandante. ¿Puedes contar cómo se hace ese cambio?

Sí, estoy en pleno proceso de ascenso a comandante, un paso muy importante en la carrera de cualquier piloto. Es un cambio que requiere mucha preparación, experiencia y madurez profesional. Después de acumular las horas de vuelo necesarias y dominar cada procedimiento como copiloto, llega el momento de asumir el mando y tomar las decisiones desde el lado izquierdo de la cabina. No es solo un cambio de puesto, sino también de mentalidad: pasas a liderar, a ser el responsable final del vuelo y de tu tripulación. Es un proceso exigente, pero también muy emocionante, porque significa estar un paso más cerca de culminar el sueño con el que todo empezó, aunque ello suponga cambiar de base para trabajar y pasar menos tiempo con los tuyos. ¿Cómo reaccionaste cuando te llamaron para decirte que te iban a promocionar?

Me costó mucho tomar la decisión. No por miedo al cambio, sino por lo que significaba alejarme de mi tierra, de mi casa: Valencia, ‘la millor terreta del món’. Pero entendí que era algo que debía hacer, que llegaba el momento de cerrar un ciclo y dar el siguiente paso en mi carrera. A veces, para seguir creciendo, hay que despegar incluso de los lugares que más quieres.

¿Cómo compaginas la vida profesional con la personal teniendo en cuenta los horarios irregulares?

Siendo hijo de padre alemán y madre española, siempre he llevado dentro una mezcla de culturas que me ha enseñado a adaptarme con facilidad. Esa dualidad me ha ayudado mucho a compaginar la vida profesional con la personal, especialmente en un trabajo con horarios tan irregulares como el de la aviación. Hay días que empiezan de madrugada y otros que terminan muy tarde, pero con el tiempo aprendes a encontrar tu equilibrio.

La disciplina y precisión heredadas de mi parte alemana, junto con la calidez y vitalidad mediterránea de mi madre, son el mejor equilibrio para mantener el rumbo, tanto en el aire como en tierra.

Cuéntanos quién es Sol y lo que representa ella en tu vida Sol es, como su nombre indica, una persona llena de luz y vitalidad. Tiene esa energía que ilumina todo lo que la rodea, y lo hace de una forma natural, sin proponérselo. En su mirada y en su sonrisa se reflejan la fuerza, la alegría y los valores más bonitos de la vida. Sol representa la fuerza y la constancia, y también la voz de tantas personas como ella que, a pesar de tener tanto que ofrecer, a menudo quedan silenciadas por el ritmo atroz de la sociedad, por ser diferentes a los demás y no poder ser independientes.

How did you react when they phoned to tell you that you were going to be promoted?

I had a hard time making the decision. It wasn’t for fear of change, but the implications of moving away from my region, from my home: Valencia, the best terreta in the world. I also knew that it was something I had to do; it was time to finish a chapter and take the next step in my career. Sometimes, to keep growing, you must take off even from the places you love the most.

Tell us who Sol is and what she means to you As her name suggests, Sol (sun) is a person full of light and vitality. She radiates that energy that brightens up everything around her, and she does so in a natural way, unintentionally. Her eyes and her smile convey strength, joy, and life’s most beautiful values. Sol embodies strength and perseverance, and the voice of so many people like her who, despite having so much to offer, are often silenced by the terrible pace of society, because they’re different from others and unable to be independent.

How do you find a good work-life balance with your irregular hours?

Being the son of a German father and a Spanish mother, I’ve always carried inside a mix of cultures that has taught me to adapt easily. This duality has helped me a lot to juggle professional and personal life,

How did you get to know her?

I met her at a very special moment in my life. When my mother got sick and I had to look for a care home for her, I discovered that there was an elderly companionship volunteering programme

there. I decided to sign up; that’s when I met Sol. From the first day it felt like a crush, an immediate connection, the sort that isn’t sought but that life provides to remind you about what really matters. In the end, I understood that we’re all one, and that affection and charity can move mountains.

What does this type of volunteering give you?

Much more than I can offer. You realise that sometimes, just by listening, offering companionship, or spending time together, you learn life lessons that stay with you. What our seniors did for us, now we must return it with affection, respect, and time. It’s a way of thanking them, of coming full circle, and of remembering that everyone, sooner or later, needs to feel accompanied.

¿Cómo llegaste a conocerla?

La conocí en un momento muy especial de mi vida. Cuando mi madre enfermó y tuve que buscar una residencia para ingresarla, descubrí que allí existía un programa de voluntariado para acompañar a gente mayor. Decidí apuntarme, y fue entonces cuando conocí a Sol. Desde el primer día fue como un flechazo, una conexión inmediata, de esas que no se buscan pero que la vida te pone delante para recordarte lo que realmente importa.

Al final, comprendí que todos somos uno, y que el cariño y la caridad son capaces de mover montañas. ¿Qué te da este tipo de voluntariado?

Mucho más de lo que tú puedes ofrecer. Uno se da cuenta de que, a veces, con solo escuchar, acompañar o compartir un rato, recibes lecciones de vida que no se olvidan. Lo que los mayores hicieron por nosotros, ahora nos toca devolverlo con cariño, respeto y tiempo. Es una forma de agradecer, de cerrar el círculo y de recordar que todos, antes o después, necesitamos sentirnos acompañados.

No es muy habitual acompañar a gente mayor y con necesidades. ¿Recomiendas a otras personas hacer este tipo de apoyos?

Sin duda lo recomiendo. Acompañar a personas mayores o con necesidades especiales es una experiencia que te cambia por dentro. Te enseña a valorar las pequeñas cosas, a tener paciencia y a mirar la vida con otros ojos. No se trata solo de dar, sino de compartir tiempo, humanidad y cariño. Todos tenemos algo que ofrecer, y este tipo de apoyo te recuerda que, al final, lo verdaderamente importante no son las cosas materiales, sino las personas… porque, como decía El Principito, “solo se ve bien con el corazón; lo esencial es invisible a los ojos.”

It’s not very common to provide companion care for older people with needs. Would you recommend other people to get involved in this kind of care?

I’d definitely recommend it. Providing companion care to the elderly or to people with special needs is an experience that changes you to the core. It teaches you to appreciate the little things, to be patient, and to look at life through different eyes. It’s not just about giving, but about sharing time, humanity, and affection.

We all have something to offer, and this kind of care reminds you that, in the end, what really matters are not material things, but people. As The Little Prince said, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

You’re not only in charge of a plane, but also the safety and confidence of all the people on board.

Every decision, however small it may seem, carries enormous weight.

Staying calm, following procedures to the letter, and always being prepared is part of everyday life.

EL “TIEMPO ENTRE TIEMPOS” IN-BETWEEN TIMES Hablaba hace poco con un amigo, al que profeso un gran aprecio y con el que siempre disfruto hablando, de un fenómeno espacio-temporal que se produce en la vida de las personas, y que en psicología se denomina el “tiempo entre tiempos”, tal y como me explicó mi maravillosa terapeuta, Laura, a la que también adoro. Laura me hablaba de este fenómeno a raíz de una decisión vital que adopté hace unos meses, de esas que, tras un largo periodo de reflexión, marcan en tu vida un antes y un después. Se trata de momentos en los que dejas algo atrás y vas hacia otro lugar, aunque ese ‘otro lugar’, no está todavía nada definido, sigue siendo una incógnita.

Puede ser dejar un trabajo, divorciarse o mudarse a otro país.

Cualquier decisión vital que nos saque completamente de nuestra zona de confort. Sabes de dónde vienes, pero todavía no sabes exactamente a dónde vas. Eso es el ‘tiempo entre tiempos’. En dicho espacio temporal es importante saber ‘sostenerse’ en la incertidumbre, tener un plan, pero también estar abierto a los imprevistos, infortunios y deseos de la vida.

Ponerse cómodo y, si es posible, estar bien acompañado.

Entonces pensé que dicho fenómeno que se produce en la vida de los seres humanos en ciertos momentos, es muy parecido al de viajar. Cuando nos subimos a un avión, sabemos de dónde venimos, y también la dirección que hemos adoptado, pero se nos escapa cualquier cosa que vaya a suceder en nuestro lugar de destino.

Hemos trazado un plan de viaje, con un recorrido, llevamos el dinero suficiente, pero, siendo completamente sinceros, no sabemos qué nos depara nuestro lugar de destino. No controlamos las condiciones meteorológicas, ni los deseos o intenciones del resto de seres humanos, ni los imprevistos políticos, sociológicos, sísmicos… Dios, ¡pueden pasar millones de cosas! En la vida, como en un avión, solo queda disfrutar del trayecto.

Acomodarse en el asiento, pedirse una bebida rica, sacar un buen libro o escuchar nuestra lista favorita de Spotify. Mirar por la ventana, dormir, disfrutar del silencio… Y confiar en que el ‘piloto’ hará, como siempre, un buen trabajo. Porque, como ya sabemos, Dios nunca juega a los dados.

Not long ago, I was talking to a friend I deeply appreciate, with whom I always enjoy chatting, about a space-time phenomenon that happens in people’s lives, something known as the “in-between times” in psychology, as my wonderful therapist explained to me, Laura, whom I love too. Laura told me about it after I made a significant decision a few months ago—one of those you make after thinking long and hard and become a major turning point in your life. This phenomenon refers to those moments when you leave something behind and go elsewhere, although that “other place” is not yet defined, it’s still a question mark. It may be leaving a job, divorcing, or moving to another country.

Any life-changing decision that takes us completely out of our comfort zone. You know where you come from, but you still don’t know exactly where you’re going.

Those are the in-between times. In such a time space it’s important to know how to “hold on” amid uncertainty, to have a plan, but also to be open to the unforeseen events and life’s twists and turns.

You must get comfortable and, if possible, be in good company. Then I realised that this phenomenon that occurs in the lives of human beings at certain times is very similar to travelling. When we get on a plane, we know where we came from and the direction we’ve taken, but we don’t know what will happen at our destination. We draw up a travel plan and set a route, we carry enough money, but being completely honest, we don’t know what our destination holds.

We don’t control the weather conditions, the desires or intentions of other human beings, or the political, sociological, and seismic unforeseen events—oh my God, millions of things can happen! In life, as in a plane, all that’s left is to enjoy the ride: settle back in the seat, order a nice drink, read a good book or listen to our favourite Spotify list, look out the window, sleep, enjoy the silence… And trust that the “pilot” will do, as always, a good job. Because, as we already know, God does not play dice.
