This book is about two mice. They are cousins.

One mouse lives in the town. His name is Terry.

He lives in an apartment with a family.

Food is no problem for Terry. There’s always bread and cheese in the cupboard.

There’s fruit and there are cakes.

Terry loves his home in the town.

Terry’s cousin lives in the country. His name is Bob. He eats nuts and seeds.

One day, Bob writes to his cousin in the town.

Dear Terry, Please come to my home in the country. We can have fun.

See you!

Bob “OK,” says Terry. “I want a vacation.

I can go see cousin Bob in the country.”

Terry comes to Bob’s house by bus. He is wearing a nice jacket. Bob sees Terry and laughs.

“What’s the matter?” says Terry.

“We don’t wear jackets in the country,” says Bob. Bob is wearing an old sweater.

“I can give you one of my sweaters,” says Bob. “No, thank you,” says Terry.

“I’m hungry,” says Bob. “Let’s have lunch.”

Bob makes lunch. Terry looks at the food. He isn’t happy.

“Don’t you like country food?” says Bob. “It’s not very interesting,” says Terry. “In town, we have cheese and cookies and cakes. Let’s go to my apartment in town.”

“Now?” says Bob. “Now!” says Terry.

In town, Bob sees cars and buses. He sees skateboards and dogs. He sees people – hundreds of people. He’s worried.

“I’m here and I can help you,” says Terry. “It’s OK.” “Where’s your house?” says Bob. “It’s there,” says Terry. He points to a big apartment building.

Terry and Bob are in the elevator. Bob counts the stories: “One. Two. Three.

Four… Eighteen. Nineteen. Twenty.”

The elevator stops and the door opens.

“Come with me,” says Terry.

The two mice cross the hallway. Then they squeeze under a door. Now they are in Terry’s apartment.

“Welcome to my home,” says Terry.

“I’m hungry,” says Terry. “Let’s have lunch.”

The two mice go in the kitchen. There is nice food for their lunch. They eat cheese, cookies, cake, and ice cream.

“Do you like town food?” says Terry.

“I love it!” says Bob. “The town is great. Can I live here with you?”

“Sure,” says Terry.

But then the door opens.

A woman comes in the kitchen.

“Oh no!” says Terry. “Let’s hide in the cupboard. Run!” In the cupboard, the two mice don’t move. They don’t say a word.

The woman goes out and shuts the door. She doesn’t see the mice.

“We’re OK now,” says Terry.

“Don’t be scared.”

In the cupboard, Bob sees a pencil.

“Is that a tree?” says Bob. “No, it’s a pencil,” says Terry.

“Do you have pencils in the country?”

“No,” says Bob. Terry gets paper and draws two mice.

Then Bob draws a cat. The cat is sleeping and it doesn’t see the mice.

Bob and Terry laugh at their picture.

There are more pencils in the cupboard. There are crayons and a ruler. Bob sees some scissors.

“What are those?” says Bob. “Be careful. Don’t touch them,” says Terry. “They’re dangerous.”

“And what’s this?” says Bob. He is next to a mousetrap.

“DON’T TOUCH IT!” says Terry.

“Come with me. Run!”

The two mice jump out of the cupboard.

They run into the living room.

“We’re OK now,” says Terry. “There aren’t any mousetraps here.

“That’s good,” says Bob. But he is scared.

“Don’t be scared,” says Terry. “The town isn’t dangerous. But be careful. That’s all.”

“OK,” says Bob. Then a car hits the floor next to Bob.

“Run!” says Terry. “There’s a baby.”

The two mice run and hide under an armchair.

Then Terry shows Bob the baby. The baby is sitting in his chair. He is dropping his toys on the floor. A car, then a truck, then a dinosaur.

“Don’t be scared,” says Terry. “Come and see the balcony. It’s nice.”

Now the two mice are on the balcony.

There are flowers and butterflies.

“I like this place,” says Bob. “It’s the country, but it’s in the town.”
