Daedalus is an engineer in the city of Athens. He is very skilled at making new things, and everybody in Athens knows him. Everybody thinks that he is very smart, and Daedalus thinks that he is very smart, too!

But one day Daedalus kills a man and has to leave Athens. He has to go and live on the island of Crete, and he takes his son Icarus with him. Daedalus loves Icarus very much, and talks about him day and night.

Daedalus and Icarus go to see the king of Crete.

King Minos wears wonderful clothes and sits on a beautiful gold chair. He is happy to see Daedalus, and welcomes him to his island.

“Welcome, Daedalus!” he says loudly.

“Welcome to Crete! I know you are a skilled engineer, and I want you to help me.”

“Of course, my king!” Daedalus answers.

“Anything you ask, I am happy to do.”

King Minos gets up from his gold chair, and takes Daedalus and Icarus to a door. He opens the door and there is a strange smell.

“I need you to make a prison under my house.

A prison that nothing can escape from. Nothing!

Not a man, and not a monster.”

“But why, my king? Why do you need this prison?” asks Daedalus.

“Look there Daedalus.” the king says, and he points at something behind the door. “That monster is my son, the Minotaur!”

Daedalus and Icarus look at the thing behind the door. It is like an animal, but like a man, too. It has big black hands, and small angry red eyes. On its head there are two huge horns. The Minotaur looks at Daedalus and opens its huge mouth. Icarus sees the creature’s big teeth and lets out a cry.

The Minotaur roars at the men and Icarus runs from the door.

“Do not worry, Icarus,” his father says quietly. Then he turns to the king. “I am a skilled engineer, Sir. I can make a prison for this monster. I can make you the best prison in the world.”

“Thank you, Daedalus!” says the king.

“Thank you!”

First, Daedalus draws pictures of the prison. He wants it to be perfect – the best prison in the world. It is huge, with hundreds of walls and long passages – it is a labyrinth.

Many of the king’s men help Daedalus to make the labyrinth.

The work is hard, and they work day and night for months and months.

At last, Daedalus is happy, and he wants King Minos to come and see his work. The king is very happy when he sees the labyrinth. It is perfect!

From that day, the Minotaur lives in the labyrinth. Sometimes the people of Crete can hear it roar loudly as it walks up and down the long passages of the labyrinth.

When the king is angry with a man, he sends him into the labyrinth. The man is food for the Minotaur.

Sometimes the king sends animals and birds into the labyrinth. They are food for the Minotaur, too.

Now Daedalus and Icarus are very happy on the island of Crete, and they do not think about their lives in Athens. All around the island is the beautiful Aegean Sea. Daedalus and his son swim in the warm water of the Aegean, or get fish for their dinner.

Daedalus makes more and more new things, and the people of Crete like him very much. Every day he gets smarter and more skilled, and people start to come to him for help.

One day a young woman called Ariadne comes to Daedalus and asks him for help. King Minos is angry with her friend Theseus, and is sending him into the labyrinth. Ariadne is worried about Theseus and wants Daedalus to help him.

Daedalus gives Ariadne a ball of wool.

“Give this to Theseus,” he says.

“With this ball of wool, he can escape from the labyrinth. He can go into the labyrinth, and then use the wool to get back to the door safely.”

“Oh, thank you, thank you! You are a wonderful man!”

Ariadne says happily.

So Theseus goes into the labyrinth with the ball of wool and he kills the Minotaur. Then he uses the wool to escape.

But of course King Minos is angry because the Minotaur is his son. He is angry with Theseus and he is angry with Daedalus, too. He makes Daedalus and Icarus leave their house and he sends them into the labyrinth.

“Now the labyrinth is your house!” he shouts angrily. “And Crete is an island. I am the king of Crete and I am the king of the Aegean Sea. You have no boat. Maybe you can escape from the labyrinth, but you can go no further.”

So Daedalus and Icarus go into the labyrinth. Icarus is scared, but Daedalus has a ball of gold wool with him. He ties the end of the wool to the door of the labyrinth. Then he takes the ball of wool into the labyrinth with them.

“We can use this wool to get back to the door safely,” he says to Icarus.

They walk up and down the long passages of the labyrinth, and they come to a place where there is a strange smell.

Daedalus and Icarus know it is the smell of the Minotaur. But now the smell is very bad.

At last, they see the Minotaur’s body. Its red eyes are closed and it looks smaller. Its mouth is open and they can see its big teeth, but now it cannot roar.

Around the Minotaur are the bones of men and animals – the Minotaur’s food. Daedalus looks around and sees the feathers from birds. He picks up a feather and looks at it carefully. He is thinking hard.

Daedalus looks at his son.

“King Minos is the king of Crete,” he says. “And he is the king of the Aegean Sea. But he is not the king of the sky!”

“What are you thinking, Father?”

Icarus asks.

“We can fly, Icarus! We can fly!” says Daedalus happily. “I am a skilled engineer. I am the best engineer in the world. With these feathers I can make wings for us,” he says.

“Oh, Father,” Icarus says. “You are a smart man, and I am a lucky boy. Thank you, Father!”
