Arachne is a weaver from Lydia. Arachne is not very old but she is a very skilled weaver. She makes beautiful and interesting tapestries.

Lydia is a big country, but all the people of Lydia know Arachne and her tapestries. She is famous. No other girl or woman can weave tapestries like hers. Arachne’s are the most beautiful tapestries in all of Lydia. They are perfect!

Arachne lives with her father in a small village. Her father is poor, but he is a skilled dyer. He dyes wool, and it comes out in wonderful colors – blue, red, white, yellow, and green. But his most beautiful color is purple.

Arachne’s mother is dead, and this makes Arachne sad.

But Arachne’s wonderful weaving skill comes from her mother, and this makes Arachne happy.

Arachne loves to weave, and she weaves day and night. She sings beautiful songs as she weaves.

Arachne’s hands move quickly, and she carefully pulls the wool to make her tapestries.

Arachne looks like a goddess as she stands at her loom, singing and weaving. Sometimes people say to her, “You weave like a goddess, Arachne!”

But Arachne is not a goddess – she is a girl.

Arachne thinks for a long time about her tapestries.

She thinks carefully about the pictures, and her pictures are always interesting.

Sometimes Arachne’s pictures are of men and women, girls and boys. Sometimes they are of flowers, fruit, and trees.

Sometimes they are of birds and fish, cows and horses. And sometimes they are of gods and goddesses!

But all the pictures in Arachne’s tapestries look alive. Arachne’s skilled hands bring her tapestries to life!

The people of Lydia travel for many days to see Arachne’s tapestries. The women of Lydia travel for many days to watch her weave. They sit next to Arachne’s loom and watch her hands pull the wool carefully. They watch the wool dance in her hands. They watch it move to make a beautiful picture – a picture full of bright colors and full of life.

It is wonderful to watch a skilled weaver at work!

Arachne’s weaving skill is not the skill of a girl.

Her tapestries are wonderful. They are bright and beautiful. They are perfect! A skill like Arachne’s comes from the goddess Athena.

Sometimes the village women say, “Arachne, you weave like a goddess.

Is Athena your teacher? Does she show you how to weave? Does your wonderful skill come from the goddess?”

But Arachne gets angry and says, “No! My weaving skill comes from my mother, not the goddess Athena.

I am a better weaver than Athena. My tapestries are more beautiful than hers!”

The goddess Athena hears Arachne’s words, and they make her angry.

So one day Athena dresses like an old woman. She wears an old purple dress, old brown shoes, and she makes her hair old and gray.

Athena comes to Arachne’s village and says to the women, “Where does Arachne live? Please take me to her house.” And the women of the village take Athena to Arachne. They do not know that the old woman is a goddess.

Then the goddess Athena sits next to Arachne’s 10

loom and watches her at work.

Arachne’s hands move quickly and carefully as she works on her tapestry. Athena can see that Arachne is very skilled.

“Your work is beautiful, Arachne,” she says to her. “But are you really a better weaver than the goddess Athena? Are your tapestries really more beautiful than hers?”

“Oh, they are, old woman, I am sure!” says Arachne.

“My tapestries are the most beautiful in all of Lydia.

They are the most beautiful in all the world!”

These words make the goddess very angry and she suddenly throws off her old clothes.

“Athena!” the village women cry in surprise. They all look at the goddess with their mouths open. Then they look at Arachne. But Arachne does not cry out. She looks at Athena with bright eyes.

“Let us both weave a tapestry,” Arachne says. “I want everybody to see that my tapestry is the most beautiful!”

“You are a silly girl! You are not a goddess!” Athena shouts angrily at Arachne. “Your weaving skill comes from me, and I want you to say ‘Thank you!’”

But Arachne does not say “Thank you!” She looks at Athena, and again she says, “Let us both weave a tapestry, Goddess.”

“Yes!” shouts Athena. “Let us both weave a tapestry. And then you can say ‘Thank you!’ to me!”

“Bring me a loom!”

Athena shouts to the village women. One woman goes quickly to her house and gets a beautiful loom for Athena.

The two women – the goddess and the girl – stand at their looms. They do not want to wait. They want to weave their tapestries quickly, and they want to make the other woman sorry.

Athena and Arachne choose their wool. They choose wool of wonderful colors – reds, pinks, purples, blues, and greens – and Athena chooses a small ball of beautiful gold wool.

Athena and Arachne work on their tapestries. Many people are watching now – men, women, girls, and boys. The village is crowded with people. They all want to watch the goddess and Arachne.

The two weavers work quickly and quietly. Their hands pull the wool carefully to make their tapestries. They do not speak, and they do not look around. They think only of their work.

The people watching do not speak. They can only watch the two skilled weavers at work. They watch the wool dance in their hands. They watch as Arachne and Athena bring their tapestries to life.
