GREAT NAVIGATORS Susan Banman Sileci is an American writer who lives and works in Brazil. Since she began working in English Language Teaching in 1982, Susan has been a teacher, editor, teacher trainer, and writer. She has written materials for pre-primary, primary, secondary, and adult levels, including textbooks, graded readers, resource packs, and digital practice materials.

Audrey Sileci is from SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil. She has been a part-time English teacher since 2008, has carried out voice work for ELT recordings since 1998, and has directed ELT recordings since 2015. She graduated from Colorado College with a degree in Psychology in 2014 and currently works on projects involving children and education.

1

Early Travelers

People like to travel. We travel to see new countries and we travel to meet new people. We travel to escape a difficult situation, and sometimes we travel to fight. Some people travel to discover new things.

When we travel on the ocean, we “navigate”.

In 982 AD, Erik the Red has some difficulties in his country, Iceland, and he wants to escape the situation there. He leaves home, and he goes to the island of Greenland. He starts a new town there.

Later Erik has a son, Leif Erikson.

Leif sails a ship to North America. He calls it “Vinland”, but he doesn’t stay there.

Today Vinland is in Canada.

Many years later, more people in Europe want to travel the world. An Italian, Marco Polo, goes across Asia to China. He lives there for 24 years. Later, back home in Italy, he writes a famous book about his travels. Many people read his book, and they learn that Asia has many beautiful things. There are exciting and expensive foods and spices, too.

The Chinese have many big ships and a lot of money.

Between 1405 and 1433, a Chinese navigator, Zheng He, sails many times to the Indian Ocean. Zheng He takes Chinese spices and other things to Africa and Arabia, and comes back to China with some unusual animals.

Asia is exciting for Europeans because there are new spices there, and other things that are very expensive in Europe. Asia is big, rich, and important, but it’s difficult to travel there by land. The Spanish and the Portuguese have some ships. Can they go to Asia by ship? It’s not fast, and it’s not cheap. To sail to Asia is new, and it’s difficult. But they can bring home spices, and sell them for a lot of money. And so their countries can be rich and important, too.

The Age of Discovery begins about 1400 when the Europeans begin to navigate the oceans. They discover many important continents and countries. They discover how to navigate across the oceans to new countries and continents, and they meet new people and eat new food.

They meet new sicknesses and difficulties, too.
