THERE’S A LITTLE NOISE HERE,
I THINK IT’S A TINY ANIMAL.
WHO IS IT?

ABOUT THE BOOK
In “My First Black and White Book - Animals”, the reading begins with a concrete fact: there’s a little noise, and it seems to be a tiny animal. The challenge for the “baby reader” is to discover which animal it is.
On the left-hand page, the name of the animal appears. But what does it look like? On the right-hand page, an illustration drawn with white lines on a black background shows what the animal looks like.
The interplay between black and white will pique the interest of the baby who, from birth, is capable of paying special attention to the contrasts between light and dark in images. Older children will also have fun with the interplay between the black and white in the images, highlighting the outlines of the shapes.
The sounds of the little animals are presented through onomatopoeias specially created by the author to compose the work. Here, it’s interesting to note that the sound of most animals does not have an official written representation in the Portuguese language. This is not the case for animals like cats or dogs, for example, but it is the case for the hippopotamus, camel, giant otter, capybara, and many other animals.
Listening to the actual sounds of the animals and imagining which phonemes best represent each of them was a poetic and literary creation, adding charm and fun to each “invented” syllable.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
ALOMA is an author, translator, and editor of children's books. Her work has been recognized by the Ministry of Education of Brazil, the UNESCO Chair Seal, and the UN Agenda 2030 Library. As an author of books for babies and young children, she enjoys writing books that feature wordplay and reveal the poetry of the Portuguese language and other languages in which she publishes her books.
In "My First Black and White Book – Animals”, she drew on her experience as a mother, always concerned with introducing nature to her young children, to create a narrative rooted in a sound that is beloved by babies: the sound of animals. It's a tribute to childhood and the child who grows and discovers the world around them.
