New Year Tyne bridge jumper believed to be Uni student
student awaits verdict on •Law Collymore Twitter abuse charge By Wills Robinson News Editor The case against Newcastle student Josh Cryer, who has been accused of racially abusing Stan Collymore on Twitter, has been adjourned until February 14. The Stage Three Law student was due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates on January 23, but was excused attendance from the hearing as the defence submitted more evidence to their case. Television crews from regional and national stations were left disappoint-
JOSH CRYER The ex - Barca Law Na captain and Stage Three student will now appear before Newcastle Magistrate on February 14
ed after Cryer’s appearance had been delayed until next week. The student, from Burnley, Lancashire, was originally charged with a Section five racial public order offence and a further public offence, but the charges have since been amended to include just one offence. The 21-year-old, who currently lives in Jesmond, faces the public order offences following complaints made to police by the ex-footballer and talkSPORT pundit in January. Cryer was arrested after the former Liverpool and England striker reported the alleged abuse to Staffordshire Police, who then passed on the matter to
their counterparts at Northumbria Police headquarters in Ponteland. According to the Universities’ Disciplinary Procedure, if found guilty, he could face a fine, suspension or even expulsion from the University. The University also holds a no tolerance policy towards racism. On the night of the alleged Tweet. Collymore re-tweeted the post to his 170,000 followers, with supporters and fellow footballers doing the same. It led to Joshua Cryer becoming a ‘trend’ on the micro-blogging site. Since then his Twitter account has been removed, as well as his Facebook account. Also, Cryer has been removed from his position as manager of the Intra Mural football team Barca Law Na. The side have chosen not to include their former captain while the case is on-going and his contact information has been removed from the The Centre for Physical Recreation and Sport Intra Mural web page. Collymore, who was capped three times by England at senior level, campaigns against racism and is also a supporter of the charity Depression Alliance. The ex-Nottingham Forest and Liverpool striker’s position on the Luis Suarez and John Terry cases caused a negative reaction from many of his social media followers. The charges came whilst a 20-year old man was taken into custody after Oldham player Tom Adeyemi was allegedly abused during his team’s FA cup match against Liverpool. The police are now also investigating allegedly racist comments made to Newcastle stalwart Shola Ameobi through Facebook.

A man seen jumping from the Tyne Bridge on New Year’s Eve is believed to have been an international student from Newcastle University. At approximately 9.40pm on December 31, concerned passers by reported that an individual was seen throwing himself from the Tyne Bridge, just a few hundred yards away from where people were celebrating the New Year. A police helicopter and fire and rescue boat were launched to search the area through the night and into the following day, but didn’t recover a body. There has been no further The investigation has been linked to the missing person’s search for 21-year-old Marketing and Management student Hasan Albash, from Bahrain. Officers are continuing to make enquiries and liaise with Mr Albash’s family. This incident was the beginning of a series of Tyne Bridge suicides that occurred during the first week of January. On January 7 emergency services tried in vain to save a 33-year-old woman who plunged into the Tyne in the early afternoon. The day previously, on January 6, a 31-year-old man also fell from the bridge. After extensive searches his body was recovered last Tuesday 31. This incident follows the death of an international student who fell from Claremont Tower during the first week in December soon after midday. In 2007, Samiratans placed signs on the Tyne Bridge with a number for those with suicidal thoughts to seek help. The scheme was only meant to last a year, but a fall in suicides from the bridge has meant the that the signs have remained.
