University Rankings student experience survey 2018 and was rated as one of the top institutions in the country in the 2018 National Student Survey, achieving 86% overall satisfaction. Freshers’ Week 2018 seeks to do justice to, and even exceed, this reputation. The theme of the week is festivals and the line-up does not disappoint. Beginning on Sunday 23rd of September, this coming freshers’ week is packed with events and activities, both daytime and night-time, to help new students get to know the university and its city. The official Freshers’ Week Wristband, costing £70 this year, promises access to the week’s daytime and evening activities which range from bowling and visits to the cat café to horse racing and bingo revolution. The week kicks off with NUSU’s big event ‘Oblivion’ on Sunday night, offering food from 6pm and an after party in the SU run by Capital FM, featuring Sigala and CliQ as the main headline events. Other highlights from the week include a boat tour of Newcastle, Murder Mystery evening, and a comedy night with BBC Three’s ‘Well Good Show’ star Lee Nelson.
Freshers’ Week at Newcastle is run by the Students’ Union and organised by students, who are aiming to showcase the very best of student life in Newcastle. Although the city is renowned for its nightlife, there is something for everyone as during the day the campus will be buzzing with over 90 daytime events, including opportunities to sample free food, take part in sports and activities, and watch live events. The week’s events reach a head on Thursday for the outdoor festival event named ‘We are NCL’, which draws together students from not only Newcastle but Northumbria University as well and is set to be a hugely successful event. As well as live music, the outdoor festival will feature food and drink vendors and fairground rides for those who have purchased a wristband. James Howlett a Newcastle University student spoke to the Freshers’ Week Organisers about how he made the most of his wristband during the week: “So we did alot of the night time activities specifically so we went on alot of the nights out and with the wristband you get into those clubs for free so that really paid for alot of our nights out. We did do a few of the daytime activities, not too many because we were a little worse for wear during the days. We did go-karting and go ape which on a hangover I wouldn’t really reccomend. You get the most out of your wristband by making sure that you’re here, even if

you do feel a bit bad. Thats what you’ve paid for so you might as well come do it. You can pick up your wristbands outside the Students’ Union in the stretch tent and if you haven’t got one already buy them at nusu.co.uk/fresherswristband or inside the stretch tent.
