A step-by-step guide to your Freshers’ Week Crew The Freshers’ Week Organisers have spent the summer planning your week, but they are not alone in making the magic happen during the week itself- there are 450 returning students who had such a blast during their own Freshers’ experience, that they’re not just coming back to re-live it, they’re here to make sure you have an equally incredible time. Let’s take a look at the lovely bunch here to make your Freshers’ one to remember.

Supervisors

Chiefs

These select few are Freshers’ Week experts.

Between them, they’ve racked up an impressive number of Freshers’ Weeks so they most certainly know their stuff !

They work very closely with the organisers behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly, whilst also looking after a number of supervisors and their crews.

Chief Drivers

You’ll catch out highly dedicated chief drivers outside the Students’ Union co-ordinating tour transport throughout the entire week.

With years of Freshers’ Week driving experience between them, they make sure that all the minibuses are getting you to and from your activities and halls at the right time.

Crew

The supervisors are one step above crew and are given a radio to prove it. Each supervisor looks after a crew of 12 or so, who are decked out in the supervisor’s choice of fancy dress.

Hand-picked for their knowledge, enthusiasm, reliability and previous experience, supervisors know how to make sure everyone’s up and raring to go all day, every day!

Drivers

This lot are vital to the week and take you to all the exciting activities taking place off campus during the days, as well as bringing you down to the Union for the evening events and taking you home again at the end of the night for free.

They work really hard and have late hours so always give them a smile and a big thank you!

These guys and gals are the people you will see around most of the week. They are full of energy, very-hardworking and dedicated to making sure you have a week to remember.

Crew are on hand right from the start, helping you move in and discover your new city.

They are here to help so don’t be afraid of asking them to lend a helping hand.

Media

Media crew are here to document your Freshers’ Week. They’ll be around throughout the entire week both day and night, recording your week in videos, photos and interviews.

When you see media crew around, be sure to give the camera a wave and to tell them how much of a brilliant time you’re having!

Your sabbatical team will be around all week meeting as many of you Freshers as possible! They will also be visiting your induction lectures to give you a quick low-down on how Newcastle University’s Students’ Union (NUSU) works.

Be in the know on how to have a good first year You know your limits

O

n the topic of drinking and drugs, there is very little doubt in the public sphere that they are almost considered integral parts of the university experience, at least for some percentage of students. To a point, this is to be expected – after all, university is all about trying new things and living life to the full (particularly as a fresher!), but that won’t be the case for everyone and that’s perfectly fine too. Your experience should be completely what you want to make of it.

And while I obviously can’t condone illicit or illegal activities, I can at least offer some advice on how to look after yourself and stay safe during a night on the toon.

Firstly, know your own limits. Unfortunately, the only real way to do that is to find out the hard way and wake up with a half-eaten kebab on the floor of Castle Leazes. But seriously, it’s a game of moderation more than anything else and only you know how much is too much. Drinking plenty of water or a soft drink between shots, as well as eating before you go out will mean you can spend more of the night having fun instead of heaving.

On the note of drinks, never leave yours unattended and absolutely never accept one from a stranger. Spiking is a risk not suffering the consequences of.

Of course you can lessen the chances of mishaps by always moving as a group, particularly when travelling between venues, and always keep to well-lit, populated areas as much as you can.

For all it sounds boring, planning is

well worth doing. Know how you’re getting out, but more importantly know how everyone is returning home, particularly if you’re likely to be drinking a lot. Licensed taxis are usually a good idea and cheap if split between the group. If you’re using the Metro, be sure to sit in a well-occupied carriage and as near the driver as you can. Personal alarms are good if you have them, for both males and females, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the area you are going to.

With regards to drugs, aside from the first piece of advice simply being not to take them, at least make sure that a) you definitely know what you are taking and b) do not mix substances – this can be potentially disastrous. Always let a friend know what you have taken and make sure you don’t get split up.

Beyond that, it’s just little things like making sure your phone is charged, you have credit and there is someone to call in an emergency. Keep a tight hold on your keys, and take money and your ID instead of a purse or wallet to avoid potential binges.

Above all else, never ever let someone else pressure you into doing something that you don’t feel comfortable with.

You are your own person with your own body and mind, and even if your flatmates are convinced that mainlining ecstasy in a club toilet is the best idea in the world, you can simply say no and walk away. There is absolutely no shame in that, and let’s face it, they won’t even remember anyway. Ultimately, university is a time for play as well as work, and I encourage you to make the most of it. Just look after yourselves.

Handling homesickness

eaving the relative safety of home to enter the big wide world can come as a big shock to the system, and so it’s perfectly natural to feel homesick when moving to a new place. While university is the home of adventure and a hurricane of opportunity, new people and places, it also represents a huge step in mentally coming to terms with settling down somewhere different.

I remember vividly going through a short period where it felt like I was somehow giving up on my home, putting all those past experiences and relationships aside in seeking new ones, as well as much more vulnerable - there was nobody I knew here to have my back, or turn to if I had a problem.

However, from discussions with a sibling who has just this year moved away to study, I have concluded that this exposure, this lack of familiarity is the greatest opportunity awarded to you.

Going to university offers you the chance for an entirely fresh start. Indeed, nobody knows your name, your personality, your aspirations; tell them! You’re older, wiser and more experienced than your transition to secondary school or sixth form, so you can truly make the time here your own.

By seeking out welcome events during Freshers’ week, your coursemates and societies that interest you, you’re automatically mixing with people that share your ideals and passions – there’s no faster way to form lasting friendships, so that would be my first piece of advice.

Secondly, moving on doesn’t for one second mean that your home is no longer your home. University is a chance to grow and expand your horizons, adding to what you’ve already learned so far. All of your friends (and for that matter, everyone else too) will go through the same thing. At least in my experience, when everyone gets home again during the holidays, it’s like you never left.

And talk to your friends while you’re here!

We’re more connected than ever, making it so much easier to share your experiences and stay in touch with one another.

Above all else, just know that what you’re going through is normal and a vital part of growing up. There is no shame in feeling a bit down, horrifically upset or anything in between, and there’s very little me or anyone else can say to assuage that while it’s happening. But with confidence I can tell you that you come out a stronger, more independent person on the other side..

Of course Newcastle University has excellent services that are there for you if it all gets a little too much. The Student Wellbeing service, located in the King’s Gate centre is open every weekday and offers excellent support and guidance for troubled students.

Alternatively if you’d like to speak to a student anonymously, the confidential Nightline listening service is available in the evenings during term time at the number on the back of your smartcard from 8pm-8am.

resher’s Week is here yet again: the blissful week of navigating your way around the toon and making new friends, offset by copious amounts of social anxiety and cheap vodka until you do several sicks.

I think there’s maybe an unspoken expectation that fresher’s week is a momentous, memorable week: a glorious rite of passage, of making life long friends, getting smashed and getting laid. All I remember are the hangovers, being completely skint and eating a dangerous amount of Dominos. There is no right or wrong way of doing fresher’s week - prepare yourself to be bitterly disappointed in all aspects and take the pressure off. Relax, try to enjoy yourself, eat loads of food, play weird drinking games and sign up to so many societies just for the free stuff that you’ll still receive their email updates in years to come. Most importantly, look out for each other. Make sure you all get home ok, make sure your flatmates are ok.

Which brings me onto this friendly foghorn reminder that nobody has any right to touch you without your consent. It is not banter if someone is harassing you or touching you without your consent. That is assault. Too blunt? Sorry (not sorry). Friendly Reminder! Sex without consent is rape. And consent is the bare minimum - it is mandatory. As Laura Bates quoted one twitter user, “Consent is really too low a bar. Hold out for Enthusiasm.” By all means go forth and flourish and frolic and enjoy yourselves but make sure it is ENTHUSIASTICALLY and

by all persons involved.

It is important to remember that it is not necessarily a stranger in a dark alley. It can be someone you know, maybe when you’re too drunk to know what you’re doing or what’s going on, or maybe its a one night stand that once you get home you changed your mind about them. Friendly Reminder! You can always say NO. It is not impolite to say no.

You can change your mind at any time. You do not owe anyone anything. Even if you really fancy that person, but actually you’re not in the mood or don’t fancy having sex right there and then, that is ok too! You can always have sex with that person another time! Or not! There should never EVER be any pressure.

Pay attention to your partner’s body language - see if they are enthusiastic too, and if you are ever in any doubt JUST ASK. If they are unable to consent or enthusiastically respond, stop. Beat the money blues

ith Freshers’ Week fast approaching and the itching excitement building about Newcastle’s infamous nightlife, it’s tempting to forget about budgeting.

The last thing every fresher wants to hear about is the pitfalls of money managing, but a couple of extravagant weeks aren’t worth being skint for the rest of the term. I’ve learnt a lot about budgeting during my time at Newcastle, so without further ado, here are some top tips on how not break the bank before you head home in December!

Firstly, I’d say it is a really good idea to set a spending budget for the week while the student loan is still fresh in your account. You can scribble down every penny your spend in a notebook or download any one of those thousands of apps on offer to help with this.

Your student loan can go a long way if you get into the swing of things with budgeting so it’s definitely in your own interests. Do some maths and your loan should keep you in control of things, just don’t put it on the back burner until it is too late.

Food preparation is also key. Unless you are planning to spend three years in ‘eat-4-less’ on Northumberland Street, preparing food at home is an easy way to save some money. Sure you might not be a great cook at the minute, but now’s the time to improve your cooking skills - you are an adult now, let’s face it. Eat clean, shop smart! Unbranded goods are your friend because they will always cost you less than their branded equivalents and I can bet that you can’t

really taste the difference between the two when it comes down to it. For cheap fruit and veg, Grainger Market is always a good shout.

When you eventually venture to the library (yes, that will actually happen) take along a few snacks from home.

Whether you’re working on an essay or revising for an exam, refreshments will help you along the way, even more so if they are nice and cheap. Even if you can handle the trip to the library without food, after a few hours you’ll inevitably need an energy boost. Do be aware that taking smelly food to the library might earn you a couple of death stares here and there, so for everybody else’s sake: no fishy foods at the library, okay? Both the Robinson library and the Marjorie library provide hot water free of charge, so you can snatch a few tea bags from home and save a quid on each.

A quick note about societies is also worth mentioning. There is so much on offer her at Newcastle but it’s important to choose your societies wisely - it’s not worth buying a membership if you know you’ll never attend any of the events.

Lastly and I’d argue most importantly...DISCOUNTS! DISCOUNTS! DISCOUNTS! You only have three years to enjoy the perks of being a student, so make the most of the discounts whilst you can. Restaurants, shops, gigs, the cinema; there are so many places in Newcastle that offer student discount and if you don’t already know about them, it is definitely worth an ask.

So, have fun, but remember - the year has only just begun and with a little help from budgeting, future-you is thanking you already.

Hey guys! So how’s life treating you as Sabbs?

Chris Duddy (CD): I’m loving it so far! It’s just a bit of a shame I have to sit in the same office as Jack Taylor - Did you know he hits the sunbeds like everyweek? Desperate scenes if you ask me!

Jack Taylor (JT): Alright Duddy, there’s no need for that nonesense mate! But I’m abolutely loving the job so far. It’s been great settling in and familiarising ourselves as much as possible. There’s no doubt that the manic period is still to come though, so maybe ask me this question again after Freshers’ Week...

Jade Holroyd (JH): It’s amazing! I sometimes catch myself sat in the office just thinking about how cool my job is - sad, but true.

Rachael Kitching (RK): We started in June and it’s been very fun-packed and productive.

Rebecca Walker (RW): It’s been great getting my head around everything and making plans for the year but I can’t wait for the term to start properly.

Campus just doesn’t feel the same when it’s not full of students!

Sophie Matthews (SM): I agree and I’m really enjoying the job so far. I can’t wait to get started on all of the activities we have planned in the AU for the year.

To say you’ve only known each other a couple of months, it sounds as though you’ve already bonded fairly well?

JT: Oh yeah definitely! We had a residential

week away in the Lakes for some training which was a real laugh. You definitely learn more about people after a few drinks, but we all came back as friends which bodes well.

CD: We had a great time on the residential! Like Jack said, you learn alot about people after a couple of bevs, but driving a car blindfolded whilst being directed by your new colleagues? Now that is a good way to get the ice broken. Cheers for the terrible directions by the way Jade/Rachael - I had a smashing time without the blindfold and then it all went down the chute with you two directing me!

JH: Don’t sweat it Duddy, any time! Yeah, the team is great!

RK: Very well because they’re all very welfare-y!

RW: This may just be me being all soppy but I completely adore our little Sabb team, like head over heels in love! I couldn’t have wished for a better group.

SM: Aw Becca! Yeah, I can already tell that the other Sabbs I’ve have the pleasure of working alongside this year are going to be friends for life.

They’re all so fun and caring, I feel very lucky!

What’s been your highlight so far?

CD: That’s quite a hard question because it’s such a great job to have so it’s difficult to choose one thing that stands out. Having the opportunity to represent the student voice on a pretty high level at meetings with the Uni has to be up there; it’s nice to know that you have the opportunity to solve issues

that students have, especially because I remember having similar problems when I was a student.

JH: On a less serious note, one of the funniest moments so far for me has to be when we were doing limbo on the Residential. Baring in mind we’d only just met and we were with NUSU’s four directors, in the middle of limbo Rachael forgot that she was wearing a dress and bent completely over and didn’t realise for a good couple of minutes. Talk about getting to know each other VERY fast...

RW: THE SABB RESIDENTIAL! SM: I second that, it was absolutely hilarious and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in my life. We also played a game of rounders along with the Freshers’ Week Organisers against the staff in the Union - it was probably the funniest lunch hour I’ve ever had.

How are you all feeling about Freshers’ Week? What are you looking forward to the most?

RK: I’m looking forward to seeing a new generation of Freshers enjoying the city. I did a year abroad as part of my degree so it’s a whole four years ago since I was a Fresher and I can’t wait to be a part of it all again!

CD: Well I’ve heard a lot of chat about dinosaur costumes knocking about during ‘Land before Tyne’ and it’s my mission to get into one of those costumes! Who doesn’t love a good dinosaur? Especially when you get to dress up as one! Priceless...Beyond that I’m genuinely looking for-

SABBS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN: Your 2016-17 Sabb Team ward to meeting the new Freshers. I’m fortunate enough to be in this job and in a position where I can (or at least try to) change things for students, whilst remembering what student life is like...not that I’m clinging on to student life or anything! So yeah, it will be nice to see new students at the start of their degrees with all the good craic ahead of them.

SM: That’s a difficult question because I’ve seen the amazing stuff that’s going to be happening!

But if I had to pick one thing, I’d probably say the Hit Refresh day because I can’t wait to sit and chill, pint in hand and take in the atmosphere.

JT: I’m really looking forward to hopefully sharing some experiences and informing new students so they can get the most out of their time at Newcastle. We have to judge ourselves on how well we do that, so I’m just looking forward to getting stuck in really.

RW: That’s easy! The photo booth - I’ve collected so many photos over the years.

JH: I second that - who doesn’t love a good photo booth?! I am so excited for Freshers’ Week, I just love the atmosphere on campus and this year there is so much to get involved with! I can’t wait to see the light show on Sunday evening - I’ve had a sneak peek at it on the computer and it looks unreal so I can’t imagine what it’s going to look like projected on the front of the Union!

What’s your funniest Freshers’ Week tale?

JT: I’ll never forget when my flatmate blocked the toilet and a guest we had round was the first one to find it.

CD: Yeah during my Freshers’ we had a bit of a toilet disaster as well. Before I tell this story I would like to clearly state that it is most definitely not about me! I lived in Leazes, so the toilet situation wasn’t too cracking. One of the lads on my floor had called off at a kebab shop on the way home after one of the nights out, and let’s just put it this way...that kebab did not agree with him. He completely stunk the floor out and I swear that stench was around for days!

RW: I’m really sorry but mine is poo related too...

the corner of the kitchen! It really wasn’t the most pleasant thing to be greeted by in the morning.

JH: Mine does not involve poo! One night I got back to my flat with a couple of my flatmates and we decided it would be a really good idea to build a big fort in the living area. I mean building a fort is always a good idea but when you’ve got alcohol in the mix, it’s a recipe for disaster. We literally used everything in reachable distance to build it - I’m talking foil, kitchen utensils, the lot!

We got really into building it until the early hours of the morning but we had to suspend fort building duties when one of our flatmates came out and told us to keep the noise down. It was honestly like getting told off by a teacher at school. So off we crawled to bed like naughty school kids. Safe to say tidying the mess we had made the next day was definitely not as fun!

RK: The fancy dress theme for my halls one night was elephants and I decided to make my own trunk out of paper mache. I made the mistake of letting others try it on, lost it, and eventually found it by my lecture theatre a couple of weeks later. I have absolutely no clue as to how it got there, but the memory of Freshers’ Week lived on.

SM: Mine was probably the second night of Freshers’ Week when I got lost with three of my flatmates after the night out. It was our fault completely but we ended up exploring the whole city and chatting about the most random things. This was all topped off with a box of 20 chicken nuggets at 6am. We somehow found our way back home and all fell asleep on the kitchen floor in our neighbours flat. We probably gave our neighbours a bit of a fight in the morning, but it was a bonding experience nonetheless.

How did you find living in halls?

JT: I absolutely loved halls. I lived in the infamous Ricky Road and although it’s currently getting knocked down so none of the Freshers’ will get to experience its full glory, I’ sure they’ve heard the stories. Don’t get me wrong the shared bathroom wasn’t always the most inviting, but I met so many good people and it was definitely the place I made the most friends!

RW: Like Jack I spent first year in Ricky Road which even non-Newcastle students have heard

crazy stories about. I almost cried when I first saw how bad my flat was, but in the end it actually turned out to be an amazing year and I didn’t want to say goodbye.

JH: I’d love to go back to living in halls but I don’t know how long I’d last after living in nice houses for the past couple of years! I lived in Marris House and it was great. There were 6 of us all together and even though we were all very different, we got along so well and we soon became a little family.

Living with complete strangers teaches you a lot about yourself.

CD: As I mentioned before, I lived in Leazes. whilst some people like to joke that Leazes maybe isn’t the fanciest place ever, it is definitely one of the most sociable places to be. It’s also really convenient living in catered accommodation in first year; having dinner ready when you get back from lectures really does take a bit of the stress out of transitioning to Uni. RK: My halls experience was one where the kitchen wasn’t used at all.

SM: Even to this day I miss living in halls! I was in a flat of 10 people, all of which are still some of my closest friends. I really enjoyed living with people who could introduce me to new things because we all had different interests. It’s also always nice to have someone around - 9 others in my case because there was always something funny happening!

Any advice you’d give to your Fresher-self?

CD: Errrrrm... probably just not to rush things. I think I got a bit scared thinking that if I didn’t get involved in everything immediately, then I never would. But looking back now I know that that’s really not the case at all. By all means get involved in as much as possible, as soon as possible, but you will take part in so many different things over the course of uni no matter what.

You’ll be meeting new people all the time throughout your years here and a lot of it will happen naturally. You’ll definitely get involved in stuff you’d never thought you would have before uni.

JT: Cliché as it may sound, don’t turn down any opportunities you get! Secondly, enjoy yourself but budget well, as there’s nothing worse than living off

pennies.

JH: I second that - budgeting is key! I spent so much time worrying about money in first year because I blew my loan as soon as I got it. Yeah budgeting is a bit of a ballache, but it will save you a whole lot of hassle in the long run!

RK: I’d learn from my mistake of not using the kitchen. I spent way too much money eating out and eating takeaways and this is something I’ve always regretted. I wish I’d have learnt a few different recipes and cooked at the beginning of the week so I’d always have something to fall back on.

RW: I think it’s important to remember that there’s more to first year than just going out and drinking. I’d definitely say go get involved and be active!

SM: I agree. I also think you need to remember to stop and take a break. Enjoy Freshers and throw yourself into everything, but make sure you do it the right way by looking after yourself too!

JH: Yeah, there’s no point burning the candle at both ends to the point where you’ve tired yourself out so much you start to feel a bit under the weather...think about how much you’ll miss out on then! I get the whole FOMO thing but sometimes you just need a bit of a break and that’s okay! I also wish I’d have taken more photos during first year.

Yeah you’ve got the memories but actually having something to look back on makes the memories that bit more special.

Photos are also a nice little addition to have to make your room look nice and homely.

Or you can opt for the funnier alternative and print out really embarrassing photos of your pals to remind them of that time they thought it would be cool to sleep in a pile of cheesey chips.

CD: You sound like you’re speaking from experience there Jade...

JH: Maybe, maybe. But just to clarify, I was the one behind the camera!

The jewel in the crown of Newcastle’s stunning variety of architectural wonders, the Theatre Royal plays host to year-round performances of nationally-touring plays including those by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Who could ask for a more convenient location than right across the road? This museum, right between the Student Union building and Robinson Library, boasts changing exhibitions in everything from ornithology to astronomy, with permanent displays on the ancient world available all year round. And at the low cost of ‘free’, there’s really no excuse not to check it out!

Down by the train station, it’s hard to miss the Life Centre, with its boldly-coloured sign dominating the view down this half of the road.

Partnered with the Univerity’s science departments, the Centre comprises a cluster of buildings where cutting edge research and education takes place ever day, yet the main attraction is the Science Centre itself. Inside you can find a plethora of science exhibits which change all the time, ensuring a fresh experience with every visit.

Tucked away just down the road from Grey’s Monument (in a location that’ll become familiar for all the wrong reasons for anyone who frequents the Megabus to get back home) you can find the Laing Art Gallery. With displays from 19th century oil paintings to contemporary work produced by NorthEastern artists living now, the Laing is a true gem of culture in the city – and absolutely unmissable for art aficionados, or painters looking for some local inspiration.

For lovers of modern art, look no further than the towering Baltic gallery, just across the Millennium Bridge. A gallery with a contemporary focus, the Baltic doesn’t limit itself to just painting and sculpture: live performance art can also be found here, as well as tours of exhibitions and installations from the artists themselves.

Social Hotspots This local favourite has gained a lot of love and popularity from customers and the press alike in its short life. Situated just around the corner from the main campus, Quilliam Brothers Teahouse brings to the table not just a huge variety of tea, but a relaxed, stress-free environment, including cushy downstairs seating where you can sink into a beanbag and catch a film on select evenings. A favoured meeting grounds come exam season.

What beats stress like baby animals?

Well, a cup of tea couldn’t hurt, too.

Fight off that Freshers flu’ With so much going on over Freshers’ Week, it can be easy to come down with Freshers’ Flu. Culture Editor Jack Parker offers up his best advice to make sure you stay healthy.

Freshers’ week is an exciting time, meeting so many new people in a new city, and Newcastle has one of the best Freshers’ Weeks around. But the fast paced week of inductions and activities can lead to you catching the dreaded Freshers’ flu. But, you can beat it, if you follow these tips. Don’t be that person coughing in your first few weeks of lectures, save yourself the embarrassment of having your lecturer ask you if you need to go and get a drink of water.

1. Sleep = bae

2. Chill is cool

3. An apple a day

4. Stop for meds

Get enough sleep - this one sounds really obvious but trust me it can make a massive difference to your overall health. Not only will you feel refreshed in the morning, but it also allows your body to repair and rejuvenate itself, allowing you to make the most of the many daytime activities that are on offer over the week. With a bit of extra sleep here and there, you’ll also be able to avoid the dreaded eye-bags everybody loves to hate.

If you’re feeling slightly worse for wear, don’t push yourself to crazy limits. You could even hold back on doing all of the night time drinking activities and get involved with the other evening events. Sure, exploring the amazing nightlife that Newcastle has to offer is exciting, but too much partying, combined with a lack of sleep will catch up on you. There’s plenty of time over your time at uni to sample the nightlife that Newcastle offers.

Eat and drink well. Whilst it can be all too easy to feast upon Pot Noodles and Dominos every day, but trust me, it will ruin you, I know this from personal experience. Make sure you eat a balanced diet, do it for me, yeah?

You might even discover a passion for cooking along the way - now that’s a story you can tell your family back home and I’m positive it will earn you some brownie points...win-win?

Make sure you have the basics covered. Make sure you have some essential medicines with you in case you do fall foul of Freshers’ flu. I’m talking about things like paracetamol and ibuprofen, cough medicines, cough sweets and so on. They will come in handy, and save you from the daggers and filthy looks from your fellow students during your lectures.

ig shout out to any Freshers reading this, you’ve already discovered The Courier and that’s fantastic news. You’ll soon find yourself hooked on its weekly editions that cover absolutely everything going on at Newcastle Uni. The Blind Date section is my favourite though, nothing better than reading what those “love birds” say about each other after their dates. It’s even better if you know somebody on the date.

I’ve tried signing my mates up a couple of times but they’ve never followed through.

Massive congratulations for choosing to come to Newcastle Uni by the way. It’s the best decision you’ll ever make. I’ve enjoyed it so much that I’m hanging on for one more year by representing you all as your Education Officer. Having been involved with sport, the Eldon (Law) Society and Freshers Crew, moving on to Education Officer was something I had hoped to do for years. The experiences I had and friends I made through sport / societies will stick with me for the rest of my life, and will be my most treasured memories that last

way beyond getting a degree. Speaking of getting involved, make sure you do! Freshers Week is always jam-packed with things to do, but it doesn’t end there. Think of Freshers Week as (an incredibly fun) taster session. You can try out so many new things whilst getting to know our wonderful city, and once Freshers is over you’ll be able to sign up to whatever clubs / societies you want to!

all reps are integral to keeping the Union and University up to date on what is happening in your halls of residence.

In the first two months of the academic year, NUSU will be looking for volunteers from all University managed halls of residence to register to become Hall Reps. The purpose of the Hall Rep role is to attend Hall Exec meetings.

These Hall Exec meetings will be chaired by the NUSU president, Jack Taylor and will also attended by staff

from the University’s Accommodation Services, plus all the Hall Reps. At the Hall Exec meetings the Hall Reps will work with the Accommodation Services’ staff to make sure all students in halls get the best student living experience possible.

Not only will becoming a Hall Rep look great on your CV, you will have the opportunity to meet loads of students from your halls and across the Uni, plus there will also be chances to develop your skills and have your say on how the Students’ Union should be run.

Each degree course has its own “student reps” that might be elected / appointed (keep an ear out during your induction lectures for more info on that) and they represent their individual year / school (depending on their position) on student staff committee meetings and beyond. In short, YOU can become a student rep and voice the concerns of your peers to the University! It’s a fantastic system that is very rewarding, but it also has a thriving social aspect to it. It’s a superb experience becoming a course rep and I really hope you decide to become one!

Student Council: Have your say, Be heard, Make a difference

S

tudent Council is your chance to make a difference to students’ lives. Through Council students make changes to your Union, your campus and your community.

Getting involved is really simple – just turn up.

Any student is welcome at Council - to ask questions of their elected Officers, to hear about what the SU are doing or to debate the hot issues of the day. In recent years Council has debated the No More Page 3 campaign.

There are six meetings a year and none are scheduled to last any more than an hour and a half. So there is really no excuse not to come along, there is always free pizza.

Want to be more involved? Get voting! 8 of the Councils seats are open for any interested students who would like to be involved all year/ For students who prefer a more casual approach there are 20 casual places available for every meeting (email gocouncil.union@ncl.ac.uk to book your place).

Stand for election (don’t worry, it isn’t overly complicated or formal, just a show of hands) and get to work in shaping the direction which the Union moves in over the next year.

I’m Rachael, your Welfare and Equality Officer and I’m here to represent and guide you on all things that matter outside of your academic life; whether it’s mental health, sexual health, housing or financial issues, to just name a few. I also run and support campaigns throughout the year alongside other students, and this year these will include Black History Month, S.H.A.G week, Housing week, Stressed out Students and Inspiring Women’s Conference.

We want Freshers’ Week to be inclusive and enjoyable for every student, and here at the Students’

will worry about these things during the week, but it’s just none of you know each other well enough yet to talk about it! My advice is to go out and get involved in as much as you can. You are going to meet a lot of people during Freshers, some of whom may be with you for the rest of your time at university, and some you’ll never see again. But irrespective of what friends you make, we want you to feel like the Students Union is a place you can come to, to speak to us because we’ve experienced this ourselves, and we’re always happy to just chat and make you feel comfortable!

Although Freshers’ is about having fun and making new friends, please don’t worry if you feel daunted at times. For many of you, this will be the first time you’ve moved away from your family and friends, and you may find yourselves worried in case it doesn’t meet your expectations. It’s OK to feel like this. You’re not alone. Most Freshers

want someone to talk to, there are plenty of people to turn to! Talk to one of the union officers (we’re in purple), or to Freshers’ crew (wearing orange).

We’re here for you and more than happy to give you our time! Or if you want a more private chat you could always call up our student run Nightline service (0191 261 2905). It’s popular with students because it’s confidential and runs from 8pm to 8am during term time.

And my final piece of advice to you; please know your limits and stay safe, because these are memories that you’ll want to remain with you for life, and we really don’t want that to be ruined through too much alcohol!

he Student Advice Centre (SAC) can be found on the ground floor of the Union building, and offers a listening ear and a guiding hand for students with problems relating to housing, academia, finance, consumer rights, and employment.

Every year, the SAC advisors help hundreds of students, and Senior Student Adviser Ruth Gibson describes the service as “essentially an equivalent to the Citizens Advice Bureau, but student-facing only. We deal with students who are pre-entry, current students, and alumni up to one year since graduation.”

In cases needing specialist advice, the SAC has “established referral links” with expert agencies; for example, legal issues are often referred to Newcastle Law Centre for help in finding solicitors and pro bono services.

Ruth describes the SAC as “The advisor works with the student to resolve their problem. The adviser will not deal with the problem for the student; the service is very much about empowerment.

“We outline what options are available to a student, and what they can do to resolve their issue. The student gets a sense of ownership of their problems so they can learn from the process.”

“The Student Advice Centre is essentially an equivalent to the Citizens Advice Bureau, but student-facing only” On the subject of Freshers’ Week, Ruth suggests: “Try to be realistic about what you might spend, particularly in the Freshers’ Week period. You’ll be doing more socialising than you would do in the rest of the year, so factor that in.”

U

niversity isn’t just about lectures, libraries and sit-down learning. Here at Go Volunteer we aim to make sure you get the most out of your time at Newcastle by offering volunteering opportunities that help you develop the skills employers look for, supplement your degree course, help the local community and make new friends.

This year we have more of our own internal projects than ever before, where possible we try to make these student led, so you not only have the chance to be involved as a volunteer but also have the opportunity to take on added responsibility and be involved in all aspects of project management.

Our internal projects include; - Art into Schools – where volunteers deliver one hour workshops in local primary schools, giving children an opportunity to express their creativity and develop their art skills. Lessons are designed around a famous artist and their art technique; such as Van Gogh and large brush strokes and Georges Seurat and pointillism.

- The English Conversation Group – volunteers run weekly classes in the community helping asylum seekers, refugees and non-native English speakers to develop their written and spoken English. Last year they helped people prepare for their IELTS exams, enabled the sick to communicate with their doctors without the aid of a translator and helped parents discuss their children’s progress with teachers.

- Stu Brew – Europe’s first ever student-run microbrewery, Newcastle University students are in control of all aspects of the business from recipe design brewing, sales and label design to sustainable waste management, marketing and business management. The brewery runs as a social enter-

GO-VOLUNTEER: Student volunteers in action prise managed by students, with all profits being recycled back into student training and aims to deliver a clear sustainability message to the student community and the wider public, as well as keeping the union stocked up on sustainable produce.

In addition we promote volunteering opportunities to students on behalf of local charities and not for profit organisations, some of these include big national organisations such as Oxfam and Barnardo’s but we also like to support the smaller ones specific to Newcastle, like Success 4 All in Benwell who need volunteers to provide study support for children living in the West End of Newcastle, a great project and perfect for anyone thinking of going on to a career in teaching.

We have over 100 projects for you to choose from varying from one off to long term opportunities allowing you to tailor your experience around your timetable.

At Go Volunteer you can even apply for one of our grants of up to £1,000 to set up your own volunteering idea or project, with support from our team of project workers.

TCTV is the Newcastle University Students’ Union television station and we are dedicated to producing high quality student-focused information and entertainment. We offer a supportive environment in which we aim to develop each individual’s skills. So, whether you are a beginner or well practiced, we’ve got something for you.

Over the last few years we’ve recorded the

musings of Newcastle’s best and brightest after six pints in Bigg Market Banter, had the hottest new musical talent on campus in for exclusive sessions, and broadcast live from the Stan Calvert varsity rugby match. We’ve also interviewed the pigs down at Ouseburn farm to see if they could tap into the same psychic energy as Paul the Octopus (God rest his slimey soul) and tell us who would win Stan Calvert. They couldn’t have been much more wrong, but at least they tried.

Released every Monday during term time at a standard length of 40 pages, along with a daily updated website, The Courier is one of the largest weekly student newspapers in the country and plays a crucial role in informing and entertaining the student population. It’s distributed across campus - to halls of residence, the Robinson Library, the Sports Centre, the Medical School, the Law School as well as around the Students’ Union building.

Even if you don’t want to be a journalist and are just looking for an activity to enhance your student experience, The Courier offers opportunities in writing, reporting, photography, artwork, web and design.

We’ve been publishing since 1948, and over the course of the last 1,293 issues have broken some huge stories ranging from scandals over executive expenses at the University to the time a student went out for a night in town and woke up in Paris (long story). We always strive to keep Newcastle students at the heart of our news agenda.

We’re not just about news though. Share your thoughts on big issues in the comment section,

students and often work around 20 hours a week alongside their studies to make sure The Courier maintains its high standards.

i everyone! I’m Becca Walker, the Activities Officer here at the Student’s Union. I’m your point of contact for everything societies and volunteering related so I’m always around if you’re wanting to find new ways of getting involved, having a great time and making new friends.

My main role is to look after the ever-growing list of societies which is currently at 197. The range on offer is huge, everything from hobbies and interests, faith and belief and courses and careers. I’m positive that there’s something that would catch your eye but if you’re not happy with our variety, just start your own - it’s really that easy!

Alongside societies I also help out with GoVolunteer, Give it a Go and the ncl+ award which is an accreditation scheme to recognise all the great work our students do. Throughout the year you’ll find me organising a whole range of one off events like Grad Ball, International Festival of Arts and Music (IFAM) and the Societies Awards. My job really is the best!!

There’s no doubt that you’ll have the most amazing time at Newcastle and I’m sure it won’t be long before you’re calling the Toon home. From personal experience, I know just how much fun you can have. I was heavily involved in so many societies and it really does help to boost your overall student experience. Everyone is at university to get a degree but it’s the stuff outside of the lecture theatre that makes your time here so memorable. I was always super busy, I was on RAG (Raising and Giving) committee, the president of Hitch where I hitch-hiked to Croatia, the Musical Theatre teacher for the Dance Society plus I got heavily involved with my course society, BioSci and Fresher’s Crew.

It sounds really cheesy but I truly mean it when I say that the three years I spent studying here were the most unforgettable, best years of my life.

Your time here will fly by so quickly and I would love for every student to enjoy their time here as much as I did. I urge you all to make the most of all the opportunities on offer, dive in the deep end, grab the bull by the horns and try EVERYTHING!!! Have the most amazing year!!!

ey everyone! I’m Sophie Matthews, your Athletic Union Officer for 2016/17. Put simply, I’ll be your first point of call for all things sporty over the next year. You’ve made an absolutely fantastic decision to study here at Newcastle University and I assure you that you’re never going to want to leave this city! Starting University can be a really daunting prospect and many of you will be reading this having moved away from home for the first time. My advice is to embrace all the opportunities you are guaranteed to encounter throughout your time here, because the next three years are going to be some of the most exciting of your whole life (and believe me, they go by so quickly!).

I’ve had the best 3 years here at Newcastle. The nightlife is mad, the city is beautiful, and the Geordie’s are probably some of the friendliest people you’ll ever encounter (Geordie Shore really doesn’t do the place justice).

Sport has been a huge part of my University experience, and I can’t encourage you enough to get involved in the sports and activities that the Athletic Union offers. You’ll make some fantastic friends with, not only your teammates, but also many of the other 4000 members who are part of

the Athletic Union! Plus, playing sport, travelling round Britain and having a laugh with your mates is a pretty great way to spend a Wednesday afternoon.

The true beauty of the Athletic Union is the huge range of sports and activities on offer. From caving to canoeing, trampolining to tennis, swimming to Sepak Takraw, the AU hosts 65 different sports clubs and opportunities to get involved, some of which you may never have heard of. Freshers Fair

between Team Newcastle and Team Northumbria.

This fierce rivalry takes place over one week, with a culmination on the Sunday when the majority of matches are played and we host the closing event.

After a 6 year winning streak for us, Northumbria have won the last 2 competitions, so revenge is needed this year!

There are plenty of opportunities for you to play sport at Newcastle that don’t require you to be part of a Club. Intra Mural sport is where students compete in internal University leagues in a variety of sports throughout the year, with your coursemates, housemates, whoever! There’s also Hall Sport, a weekly recreational programme run by the Students’ Union with a wide range of sports to choose from. Leagues are both competitive and social so it really suits students of all sporting abilities.

I can’t encourage you enough to get involved at sports here at Newcastle University. You’ll make some fantastic friends, have some cracking nights out and really develop your sporting abilities. I look forward to welcoming you to Team Newcastle!

ntra Mural and Hall Sport are programmes run by the Students’ Union as part of Sport England’s University Sport Activation Fund, providing you with the opportunity to play sport weekly in competitive and social leagues.

You can choose to represent your halls of residence, academic course or simply put a team together as a group of friends. Want to play in a team sport but don’t have a team? Don’t worry, we can find the right team for you! Take a look at what there is on offer:

5-a-side Football Weekly leagues on a Tuesday and Sunday evening, plus monthly tournaments.

7-a-side Football Weekly leagues on a Wednesday evening, with monthly tournaments on a Sunday.

11-a-side Football Weekly leagues on a Wednesday and Saturday.

arn Your Stripes is an accreditation scheme which provides support and recognition to encourage Athletic Union clubs to become more inclusive and continually develop, the more criteria you meet the more funding you’ll receive. If you believe your club already meets some of our criteria apply now to receive recognition and funding for your club!

If you would like to work towards some of our criteria please get in contact with us.

Criteria 1. Actively participated in a NUSU or national campaign, e.g. disability awareness week, rainbow laces etc.

2. Undertaken steps to help freshers and new members settle in 3. Provide evidence for attempting to include minority groups 4. Introduced or made changes to activities/socials/events to open them up to wider membership 5. Explored and carried out new ways to promote the club 6. Involved in a NUSU ran programme; Go Play, Into Schools etc.

7. Provide opportunity for non-competitive members to participate 8. Provide evidence that opportunities are available outside of playing and those opportunities such as coaching, refereeing/umpiring, volunteering etc. are encouraged.

9. Have a welfare officer as part of the clubs committee 10. Undertaken any other steps which show an increase of inclusivity 3 criteria = Bronze 5 criteria = Silver 7 criteria = Gold Why should AU clubs be involved?

- Extra support from the Inclusive Newcastle programme which can guide the club to being more inclusive - Potential increase of club membership as students are aware they are catered for and they are entering an environment that discourages harassment and discrimination.

- Opportunity to be involved in NUSU programmes and run their sport through Go Play to increase membership - Opportunity to be involved in NUSU and national campaigns - Recognition of inclusive work, in addition to a ‘stripe’ the club can be nominated for awards such as Pride of Newcastle.
