Pinnacle win Student Apprentice By Anna Templeton News Editor Four students have been crowned National Student Apprentice team of 2013. Joanna Whitty, Bethany Pain, Zoe Troughton and Charlie Oxley stormed qualifiers, the semi-finals and eventually the final to be crowned champions. The four students, who make up team Pinnacle, spoke to The Courier after the semi-finals in Birmingham. The four hopefuls were in the top two teams of the Newcastle Apprentice competition, so went through to the semi-finals. In the Newcastle rounds, the teams had to take part in a series of tasks over a three. “The first round was pitching and negotiating. There were different products and you had to pitch them to people and negotiate down the price as if we were going to stock and sell their “We didn’t go into products,” explained Beththe semi-finals any. expecting to win, The next we expected to week the comgo for the experi- petitors had to stationary ence and not get sell around camthrough” pus. “We were split into different teams. My team was at the Sports Centre, and Bethany’s was down at Herschel,” said Bethany. In the selling task, both teams made over £100 profit. The top two teams of the Newcastle Apprentice competition then went to the semi-finals in Birmingham. During the semi-finals, Pinnacle teamed up with the team from Cambridge University to hold a 50% share each. Pinnacle told The Courier how the Cambridge team dropped out without signing the release forms. “They had been dancing on the tables the night before and were videoed. But they didn’t want video footage going

anywhere, so they pulled out.” “The Cambridge team said the final was over three essential days of study for them,” Zoe added. Speaking to the team after the semi-finals, they expressed their shock at their success. “We didn’t go into the semi-finals expecting to win, we expected to go for the experience and not get through,” said Zoe. She added: “ I think we’re all going mainly for the experience and want to enjoy it. Obviously we’re going to take it seriously but we want to be able to enjoy it rather than be disheartened with what happens.” Team Pinnacle went to Canary Wharf for the final of the National Student Apprentice 2013, with the competition taking place over an entire weekend. “Going into the final, none of us expected to breeze through to winning it. Even after the success in the semi-finals, we weren’t expecting anything,” Charlie said. The team had a week turn-around before the final. “I don’t think it had the time to hit. We got back on the Monday, we were absolutely shattered, by the time we’d done our work, Friday came around so quickly. It was only on the train when it hit us,” said Joanna. Before the final, Pinnacle were all modest about their potential for victory, “We went with the attitude of taking it in, embracing it, because we never thought we would win it,” said Zoe. “After Friday, we knew we had done well. Then the possibility crept in.” The team were in first position after the first day of tasks, then slipped down to second place on the Saturday. “Second was definitely the best position for us to be in,” noted Joanna, “everyone targeted the team at the top.” Friday saw the team complete two tasks. They went to the Accenture building in Canary Wharf to take part in a consultancy task. Continued on page 8

Council votes to ban Page 3 By Ben Travis Editor Newcastle University Students’ Union is to cease sales of The Sun and other newspapers deemed to contain “page 3 like content”. The decision to boycott the publication was reached last Thursday 2 May after discussion in the final Student Council meeting of the academic year. The agreed resolves of the motion will see Newcastle University join the wider ‘No More Page 3’ movement sparked by

writer and actor Lucy Anne Holmes. The movement seeks the removal of the feature from The Sun and other red-top newspapers with similar content including the Daily Star. An online ‘No More Page 3’ petition on change.org has received 99,545 signatures and received media attention. Other Students’ Unions to ban The Sun on the grounds of the infamous ‘modelling’ page include Sheffield University, London School of Economics and Edinburgh University. Whilst students will still be welcome

to bring copies of the newspaper onto campus, it will not be available to purchase in the Students’ Union shop. The motion, proposed by Welfare Officer Esta Innes, states that: “‘Page 3’ presents an unrealistic and potentially damaging picture of what women’s bodies should look like. “The objectification of women is not ‘news’ and should not be part of a daily newspaper.” The boycott is in immediate effect.
