Step up Step up and speak English!

Unit 5 • Where is your house?

14/07/14 14:01

6.2

Strategies: reading This reading strategy is based on the article on page 164. Reading an article

PRE-READING ACTIVITIES

Before you start reading the article itself, concentrate on the other elements in and around the article. This way you can already build a context (= What is the article about ?). Follow these steps. 1

2

Read the headline.

Cycling? Yes … But Cycling Safe! Read the introductory paragraph, which usually has a different letter type (bold or cursory).

5

As bicycling begins to again rise in popularity as a method of travel and of recreation, motorists are seeing more and more cyclists on the road. Cycling can shorten a daily commute, prevent parking problems, provide a daily source of exercise and physical activity, lower gasoline bills, decrease travel times, lower air pollution emissions, and contribute to overall increased health benefits. Despite all the benefits of bicycles, however, bicycles on the road can be dangerous for both cyclists and drivers. Often, cyclists do not pay proper attention to traffic laws, while other times motorists do not understand safety concerns and drive hazardously around bicycles.

You now know why: – bicycling is rising in popularity.

– it is important for cyclists to understand laws and safety precautions.

Script CD Look at my classroom! My main teacher is Mr Stokes. He is an old, crazy teacher. He always has an English dictionary under his arm and a huge piece of chalk in his hands. He has a heavy schoolbag, a very heavy schoolbag, an awesome very heavy schoolbag, a unique and awesome very heavy schoolbag! There are 12 pupils in my class. No pupil has a uniform but we all have a cap: a blue cap with the logo of the school on it. The logo of our school is a young pupil with a pen and an eraser.

Step up online
