Ein Vierteljahrhundert umspannt die Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Familienunternehmen und Modespezialgeschäft Weinberg und dem Designer- und Architektenpaar Trix und Robert Haussmann. Einerseits arbeiteten die beiden für die Gestaltung der WeinbergGeschäfte an der Zürcher Bahnhofstrasse zusammen, andererseits auch im Auftragsverhältnis für von diesen vertretene Modelabels, darunter Lanvin oder Courrèges, für die sie gemeinsam atmosphärische und listig-innovative Ladenkonzepte im Sinne des Haussmann’schen « Kritischen Manierismus » entwickelten. Haussmann für Weinberg wirft anhand von Plänen, Zeichnungen und Architekturfotografien einen Blick zurück auf die sechs Kollaborationen, die sich im Erscheinungsjahr 2015 zum zwanzigsten Mal jähren.

Begleitet wird es von einem Gespräch zwischen der Kunsthistorikerin Gabrielle Schaad, Trix und Robert Haussmann sowie dem Architektenduo Isa Stürm und Urs Wolf, die Ende 2014 mit dem Umbau des Weinberg-Frauengeschäfts ein neues Kapitel in der Firmengeschichte aufgeschlagen haben, das ebenfalls Eingang in die Publikation gefunden hat. Reich illustriert mit Presseclippings und Firmenbroschüren, ist Haussmann für Weinberg Mode-, Grafik- und Architekturbuch zugleich. Es fängt den jeweiligen Zeitgeist punktuell ein und rückt eine ironisch-illusionistische Schweizer Moderne jenseits von Bills strenger « Guter Form » in den Blick.

The collaboration between the family-run, specialty fashion store Weinberg and the design and architect duo of Trix und Robert Haussmann spans a quarter century. Not only did they work together on shaping the Weinberg stores along the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich, but within the context of this working relationship, also for fashion brands, including Lanvin and Courrèges, for which they developed together atmospheric and cleverly innovative store concepts in the vein of the Haussmann’s “Critical Mannerism.” Using plans, drawings, and architectural photographs, Haussmann für Weinberg sheds light on their six collaborations that date back twenty years from the publication date of 2015. It is accompanied by a conversation between the art historian Gabrielle Schaad, Trix and Robert Haussmann, as well as the architect duo of Isa Stürm and Urs Wolf, who wrote a new chapter in the company’s history when they renovated the Weinberg Ladies’ Store in late 2014, as the book went to press.

Richly illustrated with news clippings and company brochures Haussmann for Weinberg is a fashion, design, and architecture book in equal parts that precisely captures the Zeitgeist and shines a light on an ironic, illusionistic, Swiss Modernism that goes beyond strictly “good form.”

Die Weststrasse in Zürich: einst eine zentrale TransitAchse, heute eine Quartierstrasse mit Tempo 30.

Während mehr als 30 Jahren wurde der gesamte Nord-Süd-Verkehr quer durch die Stadt Zürich gelenkt – vorwiegend durch die schmale Weststrasse im Kreis 3. Mit der Eröffnung der Westumfahrung 2009 wurde das Quartier vom Durchgangsverkehr befreit. Die Weststrasse entledigte sich ihres Übernamens « Auspuff der Nation » und existiert fortan als Begegnungszone, wo geradelt und spaziert wird.

Die Zürcher Fotografin Corina Flühmann hat diesen Wandlungsprozess seit 2007 dokumentiert.

Weststrasse ist weder eine nüchterne fotografische Langzeitdokumentation noch ein bunter Street-Bildband. Vielmehr handelt es sich bei diesem Künstlerbuch um eine präzise Schilderung von Zürcher Soziodemografie. Porträtiert sind Männer, Frauen, Kinder, Junge und Alte, Schweizer und Personen ausländischer Herkunft – in ihrem jeweiligen Wohnund Arbeitsumfeld im Quartier.

Die renovierten Häuserfassaden haben die alten abgelöst, die Mieterstruktur hat sich verändert – vor allem dies verdeutlicht, wie rasch sich der Gentrifizierungsprozess durchgesetzt hat. Was unverändert blieb und das Strassenbild nach wie vor prägt: die jüdischorthodoxe Gemeinde und ihre Synagoge an der Ecke Weststrasse / Erikastrasse.

In Weststrasse wird auch textlich über dieses prägende Stück Zürcher Geschichte berichtet. Die unter anderem mit dem Schweizer Buchpreis gekürte Schriftstellerin Melinda Nadj Abonji beschreibt in einem Essay, wie sie die Weststrasse in den Neunzigerjahren erlebte, als sie dort in einer WG wohnte.

Roman- und Drehbuchautor Charles Lewinsky erzählt, wie er in den Fünfzigerjahren als Bub durch den Kreis 3 streifte, um an der Weststrasse Fussball zu spielen.

Mit dem aktuellen städtebaulichen Aspekt setzt sich schliesslich der Journalist und Architekt Caspar Schärer auseinander.

The Weststrasse in Zurich: once a central transit axis, today a neighborhood street with a 30 kph speed limit. For 30 years, north-south traffic in Zurich ran mostly along the narrow Weststrasse in the 3rd arrondissement, but with the opening of the Western Bypass, the neighborhood was freed of this through traffic. The Weststrasse shed its nickname of the “nation’s exhaust” and became a low-traffic area mostly for pedestrians and cyclists. Zurich-based photographer Corina Flühmann has been documenting this process of change since 2007. Weststrasse is not just a sober, long-term photographic documentation, or just a colorful illustration of the street. This artist’s book is instead a precise description of Zurich’s social demographics. It contains portraits of men, women and children, young and old, native Swiss and people of foreign origin, each in their own living and working environment within the neighborhood. Where there used to be long lines of cars and trucks jostling down the street, the newer pictures show pedestrians and bicyclists strolling along.

The renovated facades of the buildings have replaced the old ones, and the renters have changed.

Above all, this makes the rapid pace at which the process of gentrification has moved abundantly clear.

What has remained unchanged and what the streetscape has preserved is the Orthodox Jewish community and their synagogue at the corner of the Weststrasse and the Erikastrasse.

Weststrasse also reports on this prized piece of Zurich’s history in words. In her essay, Melinda Nadj Abonji, winner of the Swiss and German book prize, among others, describes her experience of the Weststrasse in the 1990s, when she lived there in a shared house. Novelist and screenwriter Charles Lewinsky recounts how he used to walk through the 3rd arrondissement as a kid in the 1950s to play football on the Weststrasse. Journalist and Architect Caspar Schärer considers the current aspects of the area’s urban planning.

Er ist farbig und banal, manchmal widersprüchlich, aber stets kostbar und echt. In I love to dress like I am coming from somewhere and I have a place to go zeigt die Schweizer Fotografin Flurina Rothenberger die Realität fernab von Stereotypen und Klischees. Lokal, unmittelbar und über die letzten zehn Jahre hinweg so, wie sie sie auf privaten sowie geschäftlichen Reisen angetroffen hat. Selbst in Westafrika aufgewachsen, weiss die Künstlerin um die Ambiguitäten, Sitten und das breite Spektrum dieses unermesslichen Kontinents mit seinen 54 Staaten. Indem sie den Alltag nüchtern porträtiert, Schriftsteller, Aktivisten, Musiker oder Ökonomen zitiert, leistet sie einen dringlichen Beitrag zur Einordnung. Nicht explizit, sondern subtil.

Denn der afrikanische Kontinent selbst ist subtil, schwer zu durchschauen und durchdringend komplex.

Auch Flurina Rothenbergers erstes Künstlerbuch, das 2004 in der Edition Patrick Frey erschien, widmet sich dieser Komplexität: I don’t know where I’m going but I’m on the way zeigt den Alltag der westafrikanischen Community in Zürich. Ein Alltag, der geprägt ist vom Hin-und-hergerissen-Sein. Ein Alltag, der mit Vorurteilen hadert. Hier und dort als ewiger Kontext, als Prämisse – Flurina Rothenberger räumt mit Stereotypen auf, indem sie Realitäten dokumentiert.

This picture book is a small window onto a large world.

It shows everyday life in the most varied corners of the African continent, one that does not exist in the coverage provided by Western media. There is nothing spectacular or sensational about this everyday life, but it is always there. It is colorful and also banal, sometimes even contradictory, but it is always precious and genuine. In I love to dress like I am coming from somewhere and I have a place to go, Swiss photographer Flurina Rothenberger shows us a reality far from the usual stereotypes and clichés. Local and immediate, this project was made over the last ten years during the course of both personal and professional trips.

Having grown up in West Africa, the artist is well aware of the ambiguities, mores, and specters of this vast continent and its 54 countries. In her sober portrayals of everyday life, whether she is quoting writers, activists, musicians, or economists, she provides an urgently needed contribution to how we view Africa – but not explicitly, and instead subtly. Because the African continent is itself subtle, hard to penetrate, and decidedly complex. Flurina Rothenberger’s first artist’s book, published in 2004 by Edition Patrick Frey, devotes itself to this complexity. I don’t know where I’m going but I’m on the way shows us the everyday life of the West African community in Zurich.

It is an everyday life defined by having been torn asunder in various ways, one which rails against the many prejudices. Whether close to home or far away, Flurina Rothenberger dismantles stereotypes by documenting the actual realities she witnesses.

Amerika im Deko-Wahn. Der Sensenmann auf der Veranda, Guillotinen im Garten, überall lechzende Fratzen, schwebende Skelette. Front Lawn Funerals and Cemeteries ist ein Bildband, der ein spezifisches Datum im amerikanischen Kalender in ein neues Licht taucht: den 31. Oktober, Halloween, tagsüber aufgenommen in der Agglomeration von Los Angeles.

Seit 1984 hält der amerikanische Künstler Cameron Jamie die theatralischen, morbiden Horrorinszenierungen vor Haustüren und in tristen Vorgärten ausserhalb von Los Angeles fotografisch fest. Obwohl er seit 15 Jahren in Paris lebt, reist er jeden Oktober in seine Heimat zurück, um das Spektakel zu besichtigen und seine Langzeitdokumentation mit dessen Abbild zu nähren. Doch Front Lawn Funerals and Cemeteries ist kein Buch über Halloween, es geht vielmehr um den melancholischen Kontrast, um das bänglichnervöse und deshalb verkrampft ironisierte Verhältnis der Gesellschaft zum Tod, um die dekorierte Depression der amerikanischen Agglomeration schlechthin.

Dieser Bildband übersetzt die US-Vorstadt kommentarlos mit « Friedhof » und « Horrorkabinett » – Themen, die man üblicherweise in die Anonymität und Unverbindlichkeit der Nacht eingebettet findet. Dass Jamies Schwarz-Weiss-Fotografien seit 30 Jahren konsequent bei Tageslicht aufgenommen wurden, verleiht ihnen etwas Ruhiges, Humorvolles, ja beinahe Friedliches.

Doch gleichzeitig verdeutlicht genau das Fehlen der Dunkelheit das Kontroverse, das dieser Thematik anhaftet. Die kalifornische Sonne scheint in Front Lawn Funerals and Cemeteries ungebremst auf aufgespiesste Plastiktotenköpfe im Rosenbeet, auf Särge, die mit vergilbtem Satin überzogen sind, auf die amerikanische Flagge, die daneben steht. Man wundert sich unweigerlich über diese Orte, über die Welt überhaupt.

America’s decoration frenzy: graveyard cemeteries, ghosts, guillotines, skeletons in coffins, dismembered body parts, giant spiders and creatures turn up on the front lawns and exteriors of suburban homes in America every year. Families across the country decorate and stage their porches and gardens with horrorthemed scenes to celebrate Halloween on October 31st. In 1984, American artist Cameron Jamie started photographing these front exteriors in his old neighborhood in a suburban area of Los Angeles.

Even while living full-time in France for the past fifteen years, Jamie continued to travel back to Los Angeles each year, just to continue this photographic ritual.

One aspect of what makes these photographs extraordinary is the fact that they were all shot during the day rather than at night, which changes the meaning and whole context of how we normally perceive the horror and death culture surrounding Halloween.

Thus, Front Lawn Funerals and Cemeteries is not a book about Halloween, but rather about the opposing tensions of themes and imagery of death staged in these daylight domestic environments, between feelings of something at once very calm, humorous, violent, and uncanny. For the artist, the practice of transforming the suburban home into a cemetery or chamber of horror is a metaphor and form of vernacular art, which he calls “The American Grand Guignol.”

The exteriors of these Los Angeles suburban front lawns become theatrical stages which show how death is expressed and perceived in America by the people and, in effect, for the amusement of the people. When real social themes and villains are mixed, merging with the fictionalized worlds of Hollywood horror monsters and real life, the world becomes an even stranger place in which to live.

The West Coast sun will never shine the same again.

27 dicke Bilder und fliegende Sätze versammelt Aufnahmen von 27 Figuren aus bemaltem Ton, Miniaturporträts von insgesamt 26 Personen: Dichtern, Schriftstellern, Zeichnern, Malern, Bildhauern, Installationskünstlern, Fotografen, Musik-Machenden, Filmern, aber auch Galeristen, Editeuren, Sammlern, Kunsthistorikern und Literaturwissenschaftler.

Begonnen hat es damit, dass ich plötzlich Lust hatte, einige meiner Künstler-Freunde abzubilden, eine kleine Skulptur, Tonfigur von ihnen zu machen, um die jedem besondere Art des Arbeitens sowie, die Welt zu sehen und wahrzunehmen, zu zeigen. Im sogenannten Ersten Teil des Buches wollte ich, dass der Text zu jeder Figur die Rolle von « Zündfunken » spielen solle: kurz aufblitzende Lichter, die das Ganze rundum flackernd « beleuchten ». Die Figuren des Zweiten Teils sind von längeren und kompakteren Texten umgeben, die das, was mir zur Arbeit eines jeden einfiel und was deren von mir so und so interpretierte Wolken mir eingaben, auch als geschlossene « Text-Wunsch-Maschine » meiner eigenen Wahrnehmung, Sichtweise und Gedanken sehen lassen.

Der Text « bewirft » die Figur somit auch immer wieder mit ganz anderen und aus dem Text selbst hervorgegangenen Gedanken und Ideen.

27 dicke Bilder und fliegende Sätze (“27 Thick Pictures and Flying Sentences”) is a collection of painterly-toned photographs of 27 figures and miniature portraits of 26 individuals in all: poets, writers, draftsmen, painters, sculptors, installation artists, photographers, music composers, filmmakers, as well as gallerists, publishers, art historians, and literary critics.

It began simply because I suddenly wanted to portray one of my artist friends, to make a small sculpture, a clay figure of him in order to show the unique nature of his work and how he looks at the world.

In the first part of the book, I wanted the text to play the role of “ignition spark” to each figure: a brief flash of light to “illuminate” the whole in one overall flicker. The figures in the second part are surrounded by longer, denser texts that reveal my own perceptions, way of seeing, and thoughts through observations on their work and the clouds that I interpreted in varying ways, also as a sealed “Text Dream Machine.” The text thereby continuously assaults the figure with completely different thoughts and ideas that come from the text.

Wie bereits 2006 in Hot Love – Swiss Punk & Wave 1976 –1980 und 2012 in Heute und danach – The Swiss Underground Music Scene of the 80s, geht es auch im aktuellen Werk nur um das eine: die Geschichte der Rockmusik in der Schweiz. Dieses Mal allerdings liegt der Fokus nicht primär auf einer Musikepoche und deren Protagonisten, sondern auf der Visualisierung dieser Subkulturen. Gestalter, Grafiker, Musiker und Fotografen aus allen Schweizer Landesteilen machen durch ihre Albumcover, Konzertplakate, Flyer, Fanzines, Comics und Fotografien die letzten 50 Jahre Schweizer Rock- und Pop-Geschichte sichtbar.

Die Not hat ein Ende – Die Zeit der Dorfmusik ist vorbei ist nicht irgendein weiteres buntes Musik-Buch, sondern ein eindrucksvolles Zeitdokument. Ein pralles Werk, das die Ästhetik dieser anarchischen, künstlerischen Avantgarde von ihren Anfängen bis heute Tag ehrt. Doch nicht nur der Visualisierung der Musik, sondern auch der Musik-Geschichte wird viel Platz eingeräumt. Der Musikjournalist, Sammler und Ausstellungsmacher Samuel Mumenthaler, Co-Autor des Buchs, beschreibt die Entwicklung des Rock in der Schweiz – chronologisch und präzise, ohne sich in Details zu verlieren. Weiter setzen sich Roland Fischbacher, Studiengangleiter für Visuelle Kommunikation an der Hochschule der Künste in Bern, und Robert Lzicar, Designforscher und Gestalter, mit der Entwicklung der gestalterischen Erscheinungsformen der Rockkultur von ihren Anfängen bis heute auseinander – und leisten damit Pionierarbeit, weil das hierzulande noch niemand vor ihnen getan hat. Zudem werden Anekdoten erzählt, die von der Schweiz aus in die Annalen der internationalen Rock-Geschichte eingegangen sind.

Die Not hat ein Ende – Die Zeit der Dorfmusik ist vorbei (“Need Comes To an End” – The Era of Village Music is Over”) is Lurker Grand’s third and most recent book project in a trilogy published by Edition Patrick Frey.

As already in 2006 in Hot Love – Swiss Punk & Wave 1976 –1980 and 2012 In Heute und danach – The Swiss Underground Music Scene of the 80s, this new book is concerned with only one thing: the history of rock music in Switzerland. Here the focus is not so much on a musical era and its protagonists as on the visualization of the subcultures. Designers, graphic designers, musicians, and photographers from across Switzerland visualize the last 50 years of local rock and pop music history through their album covers, concert posters, flyers, fanzines, comics, and photographs. Die Not hat ein Ende – Die Zeit der Dorfmusik ist vorbei is not just another colorful book about music, but instead an impressive historical document of an era. It is a fulsome work that pays tribute to the aesthetics of this anar-chic artistic avantgarde from its beginnings to the present day.

In addition to visualizing the music, a lot of space is devoted to the history of the music itself. Music journalist, collector, and curator Samuel Mumenthaler, coauthor of this book, describes the development of rock music in Switzerland chronologically and very precisely, but without getting lost in the details.

Roland Fischbacher, Director of the Visual Communications program at the Bern School for the Arts, and Robert Lzicar, Design researcher and designer, discuss the evolution of the visual appearance of rock culture from its beginnings to the present day. This is a pioneering work that no one in Switzerland has undertaken to date. The book also recounts anecdotes that have made it from Switzerland into the annals of international rock history.

Jean-Pierre Maurer und Robert Müllers Fotoserie Morgan Is Sad Today wurde 1968 erstmals im Kunstgewerbemuseum Zürich gezeigt, begleitet von einem Text des italienischen Designers Ettore Sottsass.

Der Titel der Serie stammt von einem Lied aus Karel Reisz’ Film Morgan, A Suitable Case for Treatment, 1966, das mit der Zeile «…sadder than yesterday » weitergeht. Das war der Beginn eines neuen Filmschaffens, des Free Cinema, das mit Statements wie « No film can be too personal » oder « Perfection is not an aim » propagiert wurde, die auch in der vorliegenden Serie eine Entsprechung finden. Das inszeniert Dokumentarische und die Dokumentation des im Studio Inszenierten erinnert bezüglich der durchdachten, aber dennoch unprätentiösen Konzepte einerseits an Fotoserien Schweizer Künstler wie Manon oder Urs Lüthi, andererseits lassen Formsprache, Motivik und narrative Stränge aber auch Comic-Elemente nachhallen. Die Aufnahmen fangen den Geist der damaligen Zeit ein: eine Reise durchs mythenbehaftete London der Swinging Sixities und Zürcher Beatbands, die noch Kopf an Kopf auf den Plattencovern posierten oder in Anzügen, schmalen Krawatten und Flamenco-Tänzer-Stiefeletten Grätschsprünge machten. Die Midsixties waren auch die Zeit, als die ersten grossen Schwarz-Weiss-Fotodrucke, sog.

Poster, in Umlauf kamen, von Buster Keaton über den die Zunge herausstreckenden Albert Einstein bis hin zu Trotzki. Die Fotoserie Morgan Is Sad Today ist in diesem Sinne durchaus auch als eine konzeptuelle Aneinanderreihung von Postern zu lesen.

Ettore Sottsass schreibt ohne Glorifizierung, ohne Abwertung, vielmehr mit subtilem Amüsement über die Stimmung der Zeit. Und Sandro Fischli zeichnet, auf dem Hintergrund der Aufnahmen, mal scharf, mal absichtlich ausfransend, eine subjektiv-assoziative Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte der Sechzigerjahre: ein Blick zurück auf eine Schweiz im wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung, als die Grenzen der Hochkultur zunehmend durchlässig wurden.

The photo series by Jean-Pierre Maurer and Robert Müller was only shown once, in the Kunstgewerbemuseum Zürich in 1968, without any commentary other than a text by Ettore Sottsass. It is now displayed in this same way in Morgan Is Sad Today, which was been republished. The title of the book comes from a song whose lyrics go on to say “…sadder than yesterday” – and which in turn comes from the movie Morgan, A Suitable Case for Treatment, 1966, by Karel Reisz. It marked the beginning of a new way of making movies, the Free Cinema, with statements like “No film can be too personal,” or “Perfection is not an aim,” which are also reflected in the photographs at hand. The staged documentations and the stagings documented in the studio recall elaborate, but unpretentious concepts in art photography series by Swiss artists such as Manon or Urs Lüthi; on the other hand, though, the formal style, motifs, and narrative threads echo comic books. The pictures capture the Zeitgeist: on a trip to the myth-obsessed London of the Sixties or when Zurich Beat bands still posed for record covers standing head to head, or made leaps wearing suits with skinny ties and Flamenco dancer ankle boots. The Mid-sixties were also a time when the first large-scale black and white prints of posters became available: of Buster Keaton or Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out, or Trotsky. The photo series Morgan Is Sad Today is in this sense very much also a conceptual stringing together of posters.

In his text Ettore Sottsass stays very close to what the Zeitgeist embodied without glorification or denigration, with a subtle sense of amusement. And Sandro Fischli draws on the backgrounds of the pictures, sometimes sharply, sometimes deliberately, fraying a subjective and associative social and cultural history of the 1960s, and looking back on an economically booming Switzerland in which the boundaries of high culture were becoming increasingly porous.

Dinge einander anzunähern, die nicht dafür geschaffen sind – die Fusionierung und Aktualisierung von Bild und Text, von Text und Bild, von Bild und Bild, von Text und Text zu unwahrscheinlichen Montagen –, bildet die Grundlage und Strategie von Falsche Fährten: eine rohe Zusammenstellung, eine irreführende Einfachheit. Zitat ist etwas, was ich schon immer hasste.

Meiner Ansicht nach darf man niemals Zitate bringen.

Es ist erbärmlich, pedantisch, primitiv; man wirkt wie einer, der eines Tages etwas gelesen hat, es gut findet und das zeigen will. Ich bin – so scheint mir – ein Idiot.

Ein Idiot, zuerst der alten Garde, der – höchst naiv oder gar peinlich – durch sich selbst, durch ein langjähriges, ordentliches Sammeln von Texten und Bildern, das Wahre, das Vernünftige sucht und in der Folge allmählich zu einem neuen Idioten mutiert, der das Absurde und Komische als höchste Macht des Denkens anerkennt. Doch zu Beginn steht die ernsthafte Arbeit, die Lektüre, das Anstreichen wichtiger Passagen, die Relektüre dieser Anmerkungen und die Auswahl und Abschrift « von Hand » am Computer und die Ablage in den Ordner « Falsche Fährten ».

Dabei gilt das Prinzip einer « gemässigten Schlampigkeit ». Ein gewisses Mass an Ausfransung, also nicht völlig glatte Ränder, gehört zu diesem Unternehmen.

Die Arbeit hat nichts mit Theorie oder Wissenschaft zu tun. Vielmehr geht es um eine Ausrichtung auf das Poetische, auf eine künstlerische Strategie und Produktion.

Bringing things close together that don’t belong to one another – the fusion and actualization of image and text, text and image, and image and image on improbable montages – is the fundamental strategy of Falsche Fährten (“False Journeys”), a raw combination, a bewildering simplicity. I have always hated quotes.

I think one should never quote anything. It’s pathetic, pedantic, and primitive. One merely appears as someone who one day happens to read something, finds it interesting, and feels compelled to share it. I consider myself to be an idiot, an old-style idiot that is, one who – out of a great naiveté or even sense of awkwardness – searches for reason and the truth through himself, through an orderly process of collecting texts and images over a period of many years. I thereby gradually become a new kind of idiot, one who recognizes the absurd and the comical as the pinnacle of human thought. But this all begins with a serious amount of work: reading, underlining important passages, rereading these notes, and then selecting and “manually” transferring them to the computer into the file in the “False Journeys” folder. A principle of moderate slovenliness prevails. A certain amount of fraying characterizes this enterprise, which doesn’t have smoothly rounded edges. The process has nothing to do with theory or science. It instead aspires much more towards the poetic, towards an artistic strategy and production.

Mask ist ein Künstlerbuch von Luciano Rigolini, das eine umfangreiche Abfolge von Kühlergrills amerikanischer Autos der Baujahre zwischen 1955 und 1962 zeigt; einer Zeit also, in der sich die Konstruktionstechnik stark verändert hat und unzählige unbekannte gestalterische Möglichkeiten des Autodesign erlaubte.

Durch die starke formale Prägung der Front wurden die Wagen zu wahren Skulpturen.

Es ist dieses Objekthafte, das Luciano Rigolini fasziniert. Seit einigen Jahren verzichtet Rigolini auf das Fotografieren als solches, um sich ganz auf die Bergung bereits existierender Bilder zu konzentrieren.

Aus einem Katalog für Auto-Ersatzteile zieht Rigolini die Kühlergrills heraus, scannt sie und ergänzt sie um das Produktionsjahr, gelegentlich die Marke oder das Modell.

Das Freistellen der Verkleidungen der Autos weist keinerlei ästhetische Manierismen auf; es sind klare, funktionelle Bilder in Schwarz und Weiss, die Rigolini mitten auf eine weisse Seite druckt. Die Abwesenheit der restlichen Bestandteile, der Windschutzscheibe, des Dachs, der Räder, ruft einen Verfremdungseffekt hervor. Der Kühlergrill wird zu einem eigenständigen Objekt, das mal drollig, mal bedrohlich, mal prachtvoll, mal lächerlich wirkt.

Die aufeinanderfolgenden Formen im Buch verweisen zwangsläufig auf die Goldene Ära der grossen amerikanischen Automobile. Sie beschwören eine Gesellschaft und eine Zeit herauf, die unwiderruflich der Vergangenheit angehören.

Rigolini charakterisiert in seinem Künstlerbuch das Objekthafte des Automobils und schafft dadurch eine radikale Position in der zeitgenössischen fotografischen Ästhetik.

Mask lädt ein zu vielfältigen Deutungen und Lesarten der zwischen konzeptueller Strenge und Sinnlichkeit oszillierenden Bilder.

Mask is an artist’s book by Luciano Rigolini presenting an extensive series of grilles from American cars built between 1955 and 1962, a period in which developments in engineering technology ushered in unprecedented creative possibilities in automotive design. One conspicuous trend played up the fronts of vehicles, rendering them veritable sculptures in their own right.

It is this object-quality that interests Luciano Rigolini, a photographer who for several years now has stopped taking new pictures to devote his attention and creativity to reworking preexisting images.

For Masks, Rigolini draws on a catalog of spare parts, scanning images of automobile fronts, accompanied by a caption indicating the year of manufacture and sometimes the brand or model, and abstracting them for his own artistic purposes.

The way in which the car fronts are “cut out” does not reflect any attempt to aestheticize: they are purely functional images, in black and white, which Rigolini prints in the center of a blank page. The absence of the rest of each vehicle – windshield, roof, wheels, etc. – produces an alienating effect: the car front is presented as a peculiar object, comical or menacing, gorgeous or ridiculous.

The forms sequentially presented in his book inevitably harken back to the golden age of outsized American automobiles, the quintessential symbols of a society and an era now irremediably consigned to the past.

In this artist’s book, Rigolini individuates this vehicle of choice by means of a radical strategy of repositioning the photographic image in the contemporary aesthetic.

Mask allows for multiple readings and meanings, in a balance between conceptual rigor and visual sensuality.

Es ist Beni Bischofs persönliches Abbild seiner Sammlung von Mails, Headlines, Slogans und Witzen.

In addition to his drawings, collages, paintings, sculptures, and installations, his self-published, laser copied art magazine has since 2005 borne witness to his eruptive creative urges. He translates spontaneous ideas concerning social and political issues into quirky, humorous word and image-based messages of a disarming directness. The banality of everyday life is not spared any more than current political dramas.

Beni Bischof de-glamorizes the noble appearance of purported exclusivity and draws a picture of society characterized by his unfathomable sense of humor.

He draws his image and text materials from trivial literature, fashion magazines, advertising, and even the virtual world. Psychobuch (2014), his first publication with Edition Patrick Frey, is both an overview of this intensive production as well as a full-fledged artist’s book in its own right. Texte offers an initial view into his current work in progress: pure text in a paperback format. It consists of Beni Bischof’s personal portrayal of his collection of emails, headlines, slogans, and jokes. Texte is being published on the occasion of the artist’s solo show at the St. Gallen Art Museum (February 13 – June 21, 2015).

In einem Zeitraum von drei Jahren reisten Taiyo Onorato und Nico Krebs mehrere Monate durch die Vereinigten Staaten und arbeiteten « on the road » an der Bildserie The Great Unreal. Die fotografische Arbeit setzt sich mit Realität und der Erfindung von Realität auseinander. Das geografische Amerika ist dabei Schauplatz und Nährboden der Auseinandersetzung. Mystik und Entmystifizierung sind dabei ebenso wichtige Aspekte wie die Arbeit mit einem reichen Inventar an visuellen Ikonen, die ständig dekonstruiert und manipuliert werden. Die Arbeitsweise der beiden Fotografen beruht auf einer meist dem Zufall und der Veränderung verschriebenen Intervention. Die manchmal kruden, manchmal subtilen Eingriffe beginnen sich durch Wiederholung und assoziative Anordnungen untereinander zu vernetzen und schaffen eine spannungsvolle Realitätsverfremdung, die sich dem Betrachter nur zögernd offenbart.

Zusammen mit den Buchgestaltern Megi Zumstein und Claudio Barandun entstand ein reines Bilderbuch, das eine visuelle Reise ohne jegliche Anweisungen ermöglicht. Narrative Bildfolgen, die sich der Neugier und Unruhe des Unterwegsseins annähern und gleichzeitig assoziative Verbindungen zur übermedialisierten amerikanischen Landschaft aufzeigen.

During a period of three years, Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs traveled several months through the United States, working “on the road” on the photo series The Great Unreal. The photographic work deals with reality and the fabrication of reality. The geography of America serves as both setting and fertile ground for the examination. Mysticism and demystification are important aspects in this process, as is working with a rich inventory of visual icons that can be continually deconstructed and manipulated. The working method of both photographers is based on interventions prescribed mostly by happenstance and change.

Through repetition and associative placement, the sometimes crude, sometimes subtle interventions begin to link to one another, establishing an exciting transformation of reality that only hesitatingly reveals itself to the viewer.

Together with book designers Megi Zumstein and Claudio Barandun, what emerged is an unmitigated picture book that makes a visual journey possible without any instructions. It comprises narrative image sequences that approximate the curiosity and restlessness of being on the move and, at the same time, depict associative connections with the American landscape.
