Grimmig glotzt es aus seinen weit aufgerissenen blutunterlaufenen Augen. Die Reihe Tentakel, die seine Mundöffnung verbirgt, scheint gierig zu zittern. Beim Nächsten ist die Membran über dem Kopf so dünn, dass das darunterliegende Hirn hervorquillt. Wieder andere haben Gesichter so flach wie die von Reptilien, Köpfe wie Hunde, Rüssel oder Schnäbel, spitze Ohren.

Bei manchen stossen Zähne durch den Scheitel oder Fühler. Wo man hinschaut – Warzen, krankhaft wuchernde borstige Haarbüschel, starrende Zyklopenaugen, Hängeohren, dann ein verschmitztes zahnloses Grinsen, riesige Augen mit Mehrfachpupillen. Dazwischen Details von Ärmeln, Manschetten- und Hemdknöpfen aus Totenköpfen wie aus dem Versandkatalog des Grauens.

Monsters in Suits präsentiert diesen ganzen Horror fein säuberlich in quasi-offiziellen Brustbildern. Dunkelblauer Kugelschreiber bannt die «verzerrten» Porträts von Grössen aus Politik und Wirtschaft auf das weisse Papier. Doch der CEO von Nestlé («Wasser ist kein Menschenrecht»), der Anführer des Ku-Klux-Klans, diverse Rädelsführer der jungen Rechtsextremen sind nicht direkt dargestellt. Vielmehr vermischen sich diese im Unterbewusstsein zu grotesken Schreckgestalten, die hier in pseudo-politisch korrektem Anzug, mit Hemd und Schlips, wieder in Erscheinung treten. Sie sind ready for business, für das grosse Geschäft mit dem Wohl der Welt. Doch für einmal zeigen sie hier ihre wahre Fratze.

It stares grimly out of its wide-open bloodshot eyes, while the row of tentacles concealing its oral fissure seem to judder voraciously. The membrane covering the next one’s head is so thin you can see its brain bulging out beneath it. Still others have flat reptilian faces or canine heads, trunks, beaks, pointed ears, feelers and/or teeth sticking up through the tops of their heads. Wherever you look you’ll see warts, bristly, pathologically proliferating tufts and mops of hair, staring cyclops’ eyes, droopy ears, impish toothless grins, ginormous eyes with multiple pupils. And in between, details of their sleeves, cufflinks and shirt buttons displaying skulls, as if from a mail-order catalogue of horror.

Monsters in Suits neatly lines up this whole cabinet of horrors in a series of mock-official busts. The bigshots of politics and business are captured and caricatured here in dark blue ballpoint. But these aren’t straightforward portraits of Nestlé’s CEO (“Water is not a human right”), the head of the Ku Klux Klan or the ringleaders of far-right youth groups. They are distorted and mixed up by the subconscious into grotesque monsters and bogeymen, each fitted out with the trappings of respectability: namely a suit and tie. They’re ready for business—whatever the cost to the welfare of the world. Here, for once, they show their true colors—and their true mugs.

Anne-Marie von Wolff (1893–1974) aus Luzern führte schon früh das Leben einer Aussenseiterin. Epileptische Anfälle als Kind, Tuberkulose und der Vorwurf, durch diese Erkrankung den Tod einer Nichte verursacht zu haben, drängten sie immer weiter aus dem sozialen Leben, machten sie aber möglicherweise auch zu jener aufmerksamen Beobachterin, die sie war. Ihre Kamera gab ihr einen Platz in der Welt und im Familiengefüge. Still und etwas streng soll sie gewesen sein, doch ihre Aufnahmen des Alltags in Luzern, der Sommerfrische in Les Mayens de Sion oder auf Schloss Mauensee beim Cousin, dem Journalisten und Schriftsteller Karl von Schumacher, zeugen von zärtlicher Zuwendung und überzeugen durch starke Kompositionen. Ihr künstlerisches Talent blieb zeitlebens unbeachtet. Das änderte sich, als die Urgrossnichte, Mimi von Moos zufällig bei ihrem Grossvater in einer Bananenschachtel einige ihrer Fotos entdeckte. Bis heute trug sie um die 1500 Schwarzweissaufnahmen aus den 30er- bis 50er-Jahren zusammen.

Mimi von Moos’ literarische Texte reflektieren und erzählen aus heutiger Sicht über die Betrachtung dieser Fotografien und ihrer Zeit und sie versuchen ein Bild der beinah unsichtbaren Fotografin zu zeichnen. Die Verwandte ist eine Auseinandersetzung mit den vielen Aspekten des Fotografischen anhand eines aussergewöhnlichen Fundes. Transkribierte Statements aus Gesprächen mit Familienangehörigen und ein Essay der Künstlerin und Sprachphilosophin Tine Melzer begleiten diese kritische Beschäftigung. Sie führen tiefer in die leuchtende Bilderwelt jener Verwandten, die sich immer ein wenig abseits im Schatten aufgehalten hat.

Anne-Marie von Wolff (1893–1974) grew up in Lucerne, where she was an outsider from an early age. Epileptic seizures, tuberculosis and the claim that her disease had caused the death of her niece increasingly made her a child pariah, but may have also made her such an attentive observer of her family and immediate surroundings. Her camera eventually gave her a place in the family fold and in the narrow world she inhabited.

She is said to have been taciturn and rather austere, but her photographs of everyday life in Lucerne, a summer holiday in Les Mayens de Sion and a visit to her cousin, journalist and writer Karl von Schumacher, at Schloss Mauensee testify to her tenderness as well as her eye for strong compositions. But her artistic talent went unnoticed during her lifetime. That changed when her great-grandniece, Mimi von Moos, happened upon some of her photos stowed in a banana box at her grandfather’s house. To date Mimi von Moos has gathered some fifteen hundred black-and-white photos shot by Anne-Marie von Wolff from the 1930s to the 1950s.

In Mimi von Moos’ literary essays, she writes about viewing these photographs of a bygone epoch from a present-day perspective and draws on them to piece together a portrait of the all-but invisible and unknowable photographer. Die Verwandte (“My Kinswoman”) explores various aspects of photography on the basis of a most unusual find. This critical endeavor is rounded out by transcribed interviews with family members and an essay by artist and philosopher of language Tine Melzer, which delve deeper into the luminous imagery of a long-gone relative who always kept a bit apart, in the shadows, behind the camera.

Mimi von Moos (*1969, Luzern) begann ihre schöpferische Laufbahn zunächst als Schmuckdesignerin. Sie studierte freie Kunst an der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Basel und ist seit 2011 als freischaffende Künstlerin tätig. Mimi von Moos lebt und arbeitet in Basel und Rotterdam.

Das fotografische Langzeitprojekt The Dynamics of Dust gründet in der Auseinandersetzung des Schweizer Fotografen Philippe Dudouit mit der Sahel-Sahara-Zone.

Dudouit zeichnet in seinen Arbeiten die neu entstehenden sozio-politischen und wirtschaftlichen Banden der einst nomadischen Bevölkerung dieses transnationalen Gebiets nach. Das frühere Touristenparadies ächzt. Der Aufstieg des islamistischen Terrorismus in der Region wird dafür verantwortlich gemacht, genauer betrachtet unterliegt dem aber ein gefährlicher Cocktail aus wirtschaftlicher Unterentwicklung, Armut und Staatsversagen. In das Vakuum nistete sich eine komplexe Struktur militarisierter Islamisten, Menschenhändler, Drogen- und Waffenschmuggler ein. An der fragilen Infrastruktur nagt zudem die Korruption, befeuert durch die Interessen grosser Konzerne an Öl, Gold und Uran. Hier wächst eine verlorene Generation junger Menschen heran, der oftmals nichts anderes übrig bleibt, als zu flüchten – ins Ausland oder in die Kriminalität.

Dudouits fotografische Sensibilität spiegelt sich in einer bewusst gewählten Hybridität analoger und digitaler Aufnahmeverfahren – sich an der Wüstenfotografie der Kolonialzeit orientierende, tableauhafte Grossformatfotografie wechselt sich mit digitalen Aufnahmen ab, die sich teilweise auch nur aus an den Fahrzeugen befestigten Prosumer-Kameras speisen.

Händler, Schmuggler und Milizen werden in ruhigen, präzis komponierten Porträtaufnahmen gezeigt, begleitet von GPS-basierten Karten und Erfahrungsberichten des «embedded photographer» Dudouit.

The Dynamics of Dust is a long-term project based on Swiss photographer Philippe Dudouit’s exploration of the Sahel zone along the southern rim of the Sahara.

In his pictures Dudouit portrays the criminal gangs newly emerging out of the formerly nomadic populations of this transnational territory. This erstwhile tourist paradise is hurting. This nascent epidemic is usually blamed on the rise of Islamist terrorism in the region, but on closer scrutiny it turns out to be an effect of the region’s toxic cocktail of widespread poverty, economic underdevelopment and failed states. A multivariate composite of militarized Islamists, human traffickers, drug runners and arms smugglers have moved into the regional vacuum. Corruption corrodes the fragile infrastructure, fueled by multinationals coveting the region’s oil, gold and uranium. Meanwhile, a lost generation of young people is growing up in this political no-man’s land with no economic prospects and, in many cases, no choice but to emigrate or resort to a life of crime.

Dudouit works with a hybrid of analog and digital techniques. His large tableau-like photographs, reminiscent of colonial-era desert photographs, alternate with ephemeral digital images, some of which are shot on a car-mounted prosumer (i.e. semi-professional) camera. The dealers, smugglers and militias are rendered in calm, carefully composed portraits.

GPS-based maps and field reports from “embedded photographer” Philippe Dudouit round out the picture.

Dudouit studierte an der Schule für Fotografie in Vevey.

Er ist Träger des Kiefer-Hablitzel-Preises (2004). 2008 gewann er den ersten Preis im Wettbewerb World Press Photo mit einer Arbeit über die PKK-Kämpfer im Norden Iraks. Zudem erhielt er 2013 den eidgenössischen Preis für Design und war Stipendiat des Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund. Der Werkzyklus The Dynamics of Dust wurde erstmals bei den Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles gezeigt sowie am Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris.

After studying photography in Vevey, he won the Kiefer-Hablitzel Prize in 2004 and first prize in the World Press Photo contest in 2008 for his work on PKK fighters in northern Iraq. He also won the Swiss Design Prize in 2013 and a grant from the Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund. The series featured in The Dynamics of Dust was first shown at the Rencontres d’Arles photo festival and at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris.

Marcia Resnick Re-Visions

Nach einem schweren Autounfall in Manhattan 1975 erwachte Marcia Resnick im Spital und liess ihr bisheriges Leben Revue passieren, um ein Verständnis darüber zu erlangen, wie sie überhaupt an diesem Punkt angelangt war. Sie begann Ideen niederzuschreiben und Bilder zu zeichnen – Material, aus dem sie ein neues Buch kreierte. 1978 erschien bei The Couch House Press in Toronto die erste Ausgabe von Re-visions, ein eindringlich-scharfsinniger, autobiografischer Bildband, der sich aus inszenierten Fotografien zusammenstellt. Re-visions handelt von Erinnerungen, die oftmals zugespitzt dargestellt werden, um die conditio humana aus einem ironischen Blickwinkel zu betrachten. Text und Bild ergänzen einander, um ein ganzheitliches Narrativ zu formen.

Andy Warhol nannte es damals «Schlecht» und gemäss Allen Ginsberg war es «Schlau…für ein Mädchen».

Heute, 41Jahre später, erhält die Neuauflage von Re-visions viel Lob von Resnicks langjähriger Bekannten Lydia Lunch: «Eine süsse Wendung, die in mysteriösen Klängen flüstert, um die köstliche Perversion der aufkeimenden Adoleszenz anzukündigen».

In 1975, while driving her car in Manhattan, Marcia Resnick became embroiled in a car accident and her entire life flashed before her. When she awoke in the hospital, she began to think about all of the events which led to her being there. She began to write ideas and draw pictures considering her life thus far, in preparation for creating a new book. In 1978, her poignant and ironic, autobiographical book of staged photographs about female adolescence, Re-visions, was first published by The Coach House Press in Toronto. Re-visions is a collection of revisualizations of memories, often revised to augment the irony and humor of the human condition. The words and pictures are equally important; they feed off each other working in concert or in discord to form the narrative. Andy Warhol called it “Bad,” and according to Allen Ginsberg it was “Sharp…for a girl.” Now, 41 years later, longtime friend Lydia Lunch pays homage to the second edition of Re-visions: “A sweet twist which whispers in mysterious tones predicting the delicious perversion of a budding adolescence.”

Marcia Resnick wurde 1950 in Brooklyn, New York, geboren und stellte ihre Kunst erstmals als Fünfjährige im Brooklyn Children’s Museum aus. Als Sechzehnjährige zog sie ins Greenwich Village, dem Geburtsort der Gegenkultur, und studierte an der NYU, Cooper Union und erhielt später den MFA in Fotografie vom California Institute of the Arts. Nach Abschluss zog sie zurück nach New York, wo sie tagsüber an Colleges Fotografie unterrichtete und nachts im Mudd Club oder CBGB zu finden war. Hier lernte sie die enfants terribles der Kunst- und Musikszene von Downtown New York kennen und begann diese zu fotografieren.

1975 gab sie die Künstlerbücher See, Landscape, und Tahitian Eve im Eigenverlag heraus. Ihre Portraits kultiger Männer wurden 2015 im Bildband Punks, Poets and Provocateurs: New York City Bad Boys 1977–1982 versammelt und von Insight Editions herausgegeben.

Resnicks Werke erscheinen in Büchern und Zeitschriften, werden international ausgestellt und sind in privaten und musealen Sammlungen vertreten, etwa im MoMA, Met, Getty, in der National Portrait Gallery und im Rijksmuseum. Resnick lebt und arbeitet in New York City.

Marcia Resnick, born in 1950 in Brooklyn, first exhibited her art at the Brooklyn Children's Museum when she was five years old. At sixteen she moved to Greenwich Village, birthplace of the counterculture and attended NYU, then the Cooper Union and shortly after received her MFA in photography from California Institute of the Arts. Resnick returned to New York where she taught photography by day and frequented the Mudd Club and CBGB at night, encountering and photographing the enfants terribles of the downtown arts and music scene.

In 1975, she self-published artists’ books See, Landscape, and Tahitian Eve. Her portraits of iconic men were compiled for Punks, Poets and Provocateurs: New York City Bad Boys 1977–1982 by Insight Editions in 2015. Her photographs can be found in numerous books and periodicals, are exhibited internationally and are in major private and museum collections including MoMA, the Met, the Getty, the National Portrait Gallery and the Rijksmuseum, amongst others. Resnick lives and works in New York City.

Dieses Buch versammelt erstmals eine breite Auswahl der Sammlung des Musée des Erreurs, welches der Künstler Pierre Leguillon 2013 in Brüssel gegründet hat. Das Musée des Erreurs ist ein wanderndes Museum, das sich in den Sälen anderer Museen ausbreitet – wie ein Zirkus, der auf dem Dorfplatz Station macht. Die gesammelten Objekte lagern in der Atelierwohnung des Künstlers, hauptsächlich in den Küchenschränken. Der Grossteil davon hat nahezu keinen Materialwert und wurde in Serie hergestellt: Postkarten, Albumhüllen, Affichen, Lobby-Cards von Filmen, Stoffstücke, Keramiken, Volkskunst, Kinderzeichnungen und dergleichen mehr. Signiert oder anonym, diese Artefakte machen alle Hoheitsansprüche in dem Moment zunichte, in welchem sie über das Internet und Social Media geteilt werden, ohne Hierarchie, meist ohne Bildunterschrift oder mit falschen Zuschreibungen.

Für Leguillon erlaubt die ständige Klassierung oder vielmehr Deklassierung der Objekte, althergebrachte Interpretationen neu zu denken und eine gewisse Form des «kulturellen prêt-à-porter», wie ihn viele Museen uns heute auftischen, humorvoll zu durchkreuzen. The Museum of Mistakes enthüllt nun jene Objekte, die zu klein, fragil, oder unbedeutend waren, um aus Schachteln und Schubladen genommen worden zu sein.

Fotografien von relevanten Situationen der Alltagskultur liefern dazu wichtige Ergänzungen. Die ebenfalls in dem Buch enthaltenen Texte von Patricia Falguières und Morad Montazami verorten das Musée des Erreurs in der Tradition des Künstlermuseums und im Phänomen der kulturellen Aneignung. In frei verfassten Bildunterschriften kommentiert Carrie Pilto die gezeigten Objekte.

This is the first book to present a wide selection of works from the Musée des Erreurs, or Museum of Mistakes.

Founded in Brussels in 2013 by Pierre Leguillon, the Musée des Erreurs is a traveling exhibition that encamps for a show in the halls of brick-and-mortar museums— like a traveling circus that comes to town—and then moves on. The rest of the time, the collection is stored in the artist's studio apartment, mainly in his kitchen cupboards. Most of the items are serially manufactured and of negligible material value: postcards, record sleeves, posters large and small, pieces of fabric, ceramics, folk art, children's drawings and other miscellany. This book also includes items deemed too small, fragile or insignificant to take on tour in the past, as well as photographs of everyday street scenes that shed some light on various facets of the collection.

Whether signed or anonymous, these artifacts defy any claims of authoritativeness in an age in which visual culture is shared on social media and all over the web, with no distinctions of substantive or aesthetic value, often with no captions and, all too frequently, with erroneous attributions. For Leguillon, the constant sorting and reshuffling of the items helps us revisit conventional interpretations and subvert, with an ample dose of humor, the sort of cultural “prêt-à-porter” so many museums serve us up nowadays. Essays by Patricia Falguières and Morad Montazami situate the Musée des Erreurs in the tradition of art museums and the phenomenon of cultural appropriation. And Carrie Pilto contributes freestyle captions commenting on the featured items.

Mihai Baranbacea Falling on Shanks

Ein shiv oder shank ist eine selbstgebastelte Waffe aus dem, was im Gefängnis zur Verfügung steht. «Unbeabsichtigt dreizehnmal auf ein shank zu fallen» ist eine poetisch-sarkastische Art zu sagen, dass man Opfer einer Messerstecherei wurde.

«Dies endet nicht immer tödlich, aber ist immer schmerzhaft. Dennoch muss man weitermachen, sich den Gegebenheiten anpassen. Diese Schmerzresistenz und Anpassungsfähigkeit haben auch die Charaktere, die ich fotografiere – Roma, Bettler, Gauner, Vagabunden, Underdogs, Lebenskünstler, Bettelmusiker, lichtscheue Geschöpfe in Rumänien und Moldawien. Es ist mir wichtig, das post-kommunistische Rumänien mit allen Problemen nicht voyeuristisch auszuschlachten. Ich agiere nicht als teilnahmsloser Beobachter, sondern versuche mehr und mehr, diesen Menschen die Freiheit zu geben, sich selbst vor der Kamera darzustellen.

Dadurch treiben sie die nötige Änderung sozialer Stereotype, die ihnen immer noch anhaften, selbst mit voran.» (Mihai Barabancea) Die Kamera dient Barabancea dabei als Werkzeug der Interaktion zwischen Fotograf und Porträtierten.

Doch statt schön inszenierter Bilder sucht sein Blick das Unmittelbare und die Fotografien, die daraus entstehen, bestechen durch ihre erbarmungslose Rohheit und Schärfe.

A shiv or shank is a “homemade” weapon improvised out of any scrap materials you can get your hands on in prison. To “accidentally fall on a shank thirteen times” is a sardonic—and rather poetic—way of saying to get stabbed.

“It doesn’t always kill you, but it always hurts. And still you’ve got to “roll with the punches” and keep going.

I find this ability to roll with the punches, to “take the pain” and adapt to circumstances, in my subjects: gypsies, beggars, crooks, vagabonds, underdogs, conmen, buskers and various shady characters in Romania and Moldova. My object is not to exploit problem-ridden post-communist Romania for voyeuristic purposes. I’m not an indifferent observer, but one who tries hard to give these people the freedom they need to portray themselves on camera—and to bring about necessary changes themselves in the social stereotypes still assigned to them.” (Mihai Barabancea) Barabancea uses the camera as a tool to interact with his subjects. But instead of staging picturesque portraits, he zeroes in on moments of ruthless rawness and keen poignancy.

Mihai Barabancea (b. 1983, Bucharest) is a Bucharestbased photographer. Barabancea made quite a splash in Romania back in the late 1990s when he appeared on TV as a member of a graffiti gang. In 2018 he won the Gomma Prix Award for his series Overriding Sequence.

«In diesen Aufzeichnungen ist von einem Film die Rede, der fürs Kino hätte gedreht werden sollen. Es ist von einer Biografie die Rede, die eine Journalistin hätte schreiben wollen. Beides habe ich schliesslich abgesagt, wie so manches andere auch.»

Es blieben aber die hier erstmals veröffentlichten «Notizen», die die Schweizer Künstlerin 2005 für besagten Dokumentarfilm festgehalten hat – tagebuchartige Aufzeichnungen «über den Lauf der Zeit.

Und über den Lauf meiner Zeit», so Manon.

Angesichts der Genauigkeit der Formulierungen scheint die Bezeichnung «Notizen» aber untertrieben.

Vordergründig als Tagebuch angelegt, entpuppt sich Federn als vielschichtiges Narrativ, das sich beim Lesen in einen kurzen, konzentrierten, aber dennoch federleichten Überblick über Manons Leben, Kunst, Männer und Alltag auffächert.

In einer Mischung aus scheuer Zurückhaltung, Dezidiertheit und bisweilen trockenem Humor unternimmt die Künstlerin behutsam, aber doch selbstbewusst den Versuch, den Spagat zwischen ihrem Alltag und den hochstilisierten Selbstdarstellungen ihrer künstlerischen Karriere in Worte zu fassen.

In Federn verweben sich Erinnerungen und Gegenwart mit dem vermeintlich Nebensächlichen. Im Gegensatz zu ihren inszenatorischen Arbeiten sind es nicht die grossen Gefühle, die die Künstlerin interessieren, sondern die kleinen Schwankungen des Gemüts, poetische Natur- und Stadtbeobachtungen, die Widrigkeiten des Herzens, Reflexionen über das Älterwerden und die Vergänglichkeit.

“A documentary film that was supposed to be made for the cinema is mentioned in my notes, as is a biography that a journalist was planning to write,” writes Manon. “I ended up calling off both, along with plenty of other stuff.”

But the Swiss artist’s “notes” for the planned documentary in 2005, diary-like entries “about the passage of time, and about the passage of my times,” as she puts it, remained, and are published here for the first time. In light of the multitude of details they provide, it seems a bit of an understatement to call them “notes”. Federn (“Feathers”) actually takes the shape of a diary, and turns out to be a multi-layered narrative providing a succinct and yet feather-light look back on Manon's life, art, men and day-to-day concerns.

In a mix of timidly restrained, resolute and at times drily humorous prose, the artist cautiously but confidently attempts to put into words the balancing act between her everyday life and her artistic career of highly stylized self-portrayals. Federn interweaves memories and the present with comments on apparently minor matters. In contrast to her elaborate mises-en-scène, what interests the author of these notes is not pageantry and sensationalism, but minute mood swings, poetic observations of her urban and natural surroundings, the trials and tribulations of the heart, and reflections on aging and transience.

Manon ist eine Schweizer Künstlerin. Sie studierte Kunst und Schauspiel in Zürich. 1974 schuf sie mit dem Lachsfarbenen Boudoir das erste von vielen Environments, in denen sie jeweils Statisten und sich selbst inszenierte. In Paris wandte sie sich Ende der 1970er-Jahre erstmals der inszenatorischen Fotografie zu. Es entstanden Serien in Schwarz-Weiss, darunter La dame au crâne rasé. Bis heute umkreisen ihre Arbeiten, die in Kunsthäusern und Galerien im In- und Ausland zu sehen sowie in Museumssammlungen vertreten sind, Themen wie Identität, Erotik und Vergänglichkeit. 2008 wurde Manon mit dem Prix Meret Oppenheim ausgezeichnet. Gegenwärtig lebt und arbeitet sie in Zürich.

Manon is a Swiss artist. She studied art and acting in Zurich. In 1974, she created Salmon-Colored Boudoir, the first of many environments and mises-en-scène of extras or of the artist herself. In late 1970s Paris, she turned to staged photography, which led to various black-and-white series including La dame au crâne rasé (“The Woman with the Shaved Head”). Shown in galleries in Germany and abroad and featured in various museum collections, to this day her works revolve around the themes of identity, eroticism and transience. Manon was awarded the Prix Meret Oppenheim in 2008. She is currently based in Zurich.
