1979 zog Catherine Ceresole zusammen mit ihrem Mann Nicolas nach New York, wo er eine Ausbildung zum Toningenieur beginnen sollte. Der eigentliche Grund jedoch war die Underground-Musikszene der Stadt, die das Paar in den Bann geschlagen hatte.

Bald schon waren sie mit zahlreichen Musikern befreundet, und Catherine begann, sie an Konzerten und im vertrauten Rahmen zu fotografieren. In 1979 Catherine Ceresole and her husband Nicolas moved to New York, where he was to begin training as an audio engineer. In truth, however, the couple went there because they were captivated by the city’s underground music scene. They soon became friendly with a number of musicians who Catherine began to photograph at concerts and in intimate settings. The result was a unique photographic documentary of the New York punk, no-wave and avant-garde music scene during its heyday. With her keen eye for dramatic moments she captured them all on film: Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch, Glenn Branca, Arto Lindsay, Christian Marclay, the Beastie Boys and many others. After they returned to Switzerland Catherine Ceresole continued to photograph musicians and their bands(—(with an unfailing ear and keen eye. The book is a visual music history of the last decades, presenting the work of this unique photographer to a broad public for the first time.

Als Kind der Postmoderne verwebt der Schweizer Künstler David Renggli in seinem Werk Populärkultur und kunsthistorische Topoi mit verspielter Leichtigkeit zu einem homogenen Ganzen. Ausgangspunkt des vorliegenden Buchs bildet Rengglis Ausstellung The Charm of Ignorance (2013) im Museum Bellpark in Kriens. Renggli montierte in einer rigiden Petersburger Hängung rund 2000 Bilder. Die Collagen verschränken Gegensätzliches, indem sie aus Bildern von Modemagazinen und Pornoheften, Kunstkatalogen und gefundener Fotografie schöpfen. Der Betrachter verliert sich im Schauen und gerät in einen tranceartigen Zustand; die Inszenierung ist ein Fest des kreativen Akts, der in schöpferischer Beschleunigung"–"der Künstler arbeitet etwa drei Minuten an einem Bild"–"eine Unmenge von Einzelwerken hervorbringt. The Swiss artist David Renggli, a child of postmodernism, weaves popular culture and art historical topoi into his work with a playful ease, molding it into a homogenous whole. The origins of this book lie in Renggli’s exhibition The Charm of Ignorance (2013) that was shown in Museum Bellpark in Kriens.

Renggli mounted almost two thousand pictures in a rigid “St. Petersburg hanging.” The collages, incorporating images from fashion and porn magazines, art catalogues and discovered photographs, interlace opposites. The observer loses himself in the presentation and falls into a trance-like state; a celebration of the artistic act, which through creative acceleration (the artist spends about three minutes on a single picture) produces a huge amount of single works.

At first glance they appear familiar. Only under more careful observation do they reveal their surreal grotesque absurdity. Surprise moments and repetition as an aesthetic principle are returning themes in Renggli’s work and lead to a magnificent state of ambivalence which connects us with the either"(/"or sides of a problem.

Von Februar bis November 1978 arbeitete HR Giger in den Shepperton Studios bei London an den Figuren und Kulissen des Films Alien (1979) von Ridley Scott.

Der Film sollte ein Welterfolg werden und brachte Giger einen Oscar ein. In den hier erstmals als Faksimile veröffentlichten und transkribierten Alien Tagebüchern beschreibt HR Giger seine Arbeit in den Studios.

Er schreibt, macht Skizzen und fotografiert mit seiner Polaroid SX70. Schonungslos, sarkastisch und zuweilen verzweifelt schildert Giger seinen Alltag in der Filmindustrie, wie er versucht, seine Entwürfe in die Wirklichkeit umzusetzen"–"allen Widrigkeiten zum Trotz, sei es nun die Knauserigkeit der Produzenten oder die Langsamkeit seiner Mitarbeiter.

Die Alien Tagebücher (in deutscher Transkription und englischer Übersetzung) zeigen den Künstler HR Giger von einer kaum bekannten persönlichen Seite und bieten einen ungewöhnlichen Einblick in die Entstehung dieses Filmklassikers aus Sicht des Schweizer Künstlers. Das Buch enthält fast ausschliesslich unveröffentlichtes Material, darunter Zeichnungen und Polaroids, die das Werden des Monsters zeigen, sowie zahlreiche Standbilder aus dem reichhaltigen Filmmaterial, das Giger in Shepperton aufnahm.

HR Giger worked in the Shepperton Studios near London from February to November 1978, creating the figures and sets for the film Alien (1979) directed by Ridley Scott. The film became an international success, earning Giger an Oscar. In the transcribed Alien Diaries, published here for the first time as a facsimile, HR Giger describes his work in the studios.

He writes, sketches, and takes photographs with his Polaroid SX70. With brutal honesty, sarcasm and occasional despair, Giger describes what it is like working for the film industry and how he struggles against all odds(—(be it the stinginess of producers or the sluggishness of his staff(—(to see his designs become reality.

The Alien Diaries (in German transcription with an English translation) show a little-known personal side of the artist HR Giger and offer an unusual, detailed glimpse into the making of a movie classic through the eyes of a Swiss artist. The book contains almost completely unpublished material, including drawings, Polaroids showing the monster coming to life, and several still shots from the plentiful film material that Giger took in Shepperton.

Das Buch gibt einen Einblick in das im Auftrag der Stadt Zürich über mehrere Jahre entstandene Archiv von Zustandsaufnahmen des Fotografen David Küenzi.

Das Betreibungs- und Stadtammannamt Zürich 6 erstellt jeweils einen amtlich beglaubigten Befund im Auftrag des Eigentümers(/%des Bauherrn der Liegenschaft(/%des Grundstücks, wenn etwas umgebaut, renoviert oder abgerissen wird oder ein Neubau entsteht. Der Befund beinhaltet eine Zustandsaufnahme bereits vorhandener Schäden (Risse, Abplatzungen etc.), die aus einem schriftlichen Rissprotokoll und einer fotografischen Dokumentation besteht. Das Stadtammannamt ist verpflichtet, dabei mit freischaffenden, diplomierten Fotografen zu arbeiten.

Küenzis Dokumentationen verschiedenartigster Risse werden nun in Form eines Künstlerbuchs neu verortet. Was einst blosses zweckgebundenes Dokument war, entwickelt als eigenständiges Bild eine abgründige Schönheit. Mal erinnern die Fotografien an abstrakte Gemälde, dann wieder scheinen sie auf den beklemmenden schweizerischen Ordnungswahn zu verweisen. In der Edition Patrick Frey schliesst Zustandsaufnahme an eine Reihe von fotografischen Recherchen zu Häusern, Architektur und künstlerischen Auseinandersetzungen mit Archiven an.

This book provides a glimpse into the archive of status assessment photos that David Küenzi took for the city of Zurich over a period of several years.

The Debt Enforcement Registry of the city of Zurich 6 issues an certified report commissioned by the owner or builder of real estate or property that is to be converted, renovated or torn down, or when construction of a new building is planned. The report includes a status assessment of pre-existing structural damage (cracks, chipping, etc.) that consists of a text summary and photographic documentation. The municipal office is obligated to work with professional freelance photographers.

Here, Küenzi’s documentation of the various kinds of cracks is presented in a very different context, that of an artistic book. What began as a mere functional document evolved into an independent image of unfathomable beauty. At times the photographs recall abstract paintings; others seem to allude to the rather disturbing obsessive orderliness of the Swiss. In the Edition Patrick Frey, Zustandsaufnahme joins the series of photographic research projects on buildings, architecture and artistic examinations of archives.

David Küenzi (*1974, Zürich) ist als freischaffender Fotograf für Tageszeitungen, Agenturen sowie für öffentliche und kulturelle Projekte tätig. Er studierte Bildende Kunst an der Jan van Eyck Akademie in Holland und nahm an zahlreichen Gruppenausstellungen und Filmfestivals im In- und Ausland teil. The publication NO MORE WAR presents a group of recently discovered sculptural works created by the Japanese pop-art pioneer Keiichi Tanaami (b. 1936, Tokio) in the 1980s. The wood-cut sculptures recall children’s toys and represent an unexpected break from the artist’s usual style. They form an obscure world of objects reminiscent of the frozen figures from his early films that connect the aesthetic of American advertisements and fragmented memories of World War II. Today these unusual sculptures call to mind video game creatures, fantastical architectural models and post-modern design, but they also retain a connection to traditional Japanese handicrafts.

1936 als Sohn eines Textilgrosshändlers geboren, erlebte Tanaami gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs die Bombardierungen Tokios. Später studierte er an der Musahino Art University, besuchte 1969 Andy Warhol in New York, arbeitete während gemeinsamer Japanreisen mit Robert Rauschenberg resp. dem Kunstkritiker Michel Tapié und entwarf Plattencover für Jefferson Airplane und The Monkees. 1975 wurde Tanaami erster Art Director der japanischen Ausgabe des Playboy Magazine. Seit 1991 lehrt er an der Kyoto University of Art and Design.

Born in 1936 as the son of a textile wholesaler, Tanaami was nine years old when he experienced the bombing of Tokyo towards the end of World War II. He studied at the Musahino Art University, visited Andy Warhol in New York in 1969, worked with both Robert Rauschenberg and art critic Michel Tapié during their travels to Japan, and designed record covers for Jefferson Airplane and The Monkees. In 1975 Tanaami became the first art director of the Japanese edition of Playboy Magazine. He has been teaching at the Kyoto University of Art and Design since 1991.

Internet sales portals serve as the starting point for Luciano Rigolini’s newest book. Under the search headings “private” and “used,” the Swiss artist compiles pictures of private sellers who have photographed themselves with their used underwear. private(/%used meanders playfully between selfportrait, orchestration and discovered photographs.

Rigolini has created a subjective collection of photos from the overabundance of images available on the Internet. These photos, through their imagery of signs, gestures and poses, flirt with the erotic and fetishistic.

The undoctored pictures elude elegant erotic stereotypes and common codes of conventional photography.

Far from a sociological approach, Rigolini’s presentation shakes up our understanding of photographic intimacy and invites the viewer to embark on a wondrous journey in which photographs, removed from their original context, succeed in transcending reality.

Luciano Rigolini wurde 1950 in der italienischen Schweiz geboren und studierte an der Universität Paris VIII im Département Cinéma. Zu Beginn der 1990erJahre finden seine Urban Landscapes, mit denen er die Gesetzmässigkeiten des Mediums Fotografie sowie die Beziehung zwischen Form und Inhalt des fotografischen Bildes untersucht, internationale Beachtung.

Parallel zu seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit arbeitet er seit 1995 auch als Produzent des TV-Kultursenders ARTE, Paris, wo er verantwortlich für den Bereich Künstlerischer Dokumentarfilm ist.

Luciano Rigolini was born in Italian-speaking Switzerland in 1950 and studied at the Université Paris VIII, Département Cinéma. In the early 1990s he attracted international attention with his Urban Landscapes, in which he explored the principles of photography and relationship between form and content in the photographic image. Parallel to this artistic activity, he has also worked since 1995 as a producer for the European cultural television channel ARTE in Paris, where he is responsible for the area of artistic documentary films.

Over the last few years the Sprayers from KCBR have been working intensely, putting their names on pretty much every corner of Zurich(—(on building facades, rooftops, delivery trucks, trams, bus stops and SBB trains.

They pursue their activities with great discipline, planning everything down to the very last detail. They know the public transportation schedules by heart. This is essential since the timing of their activities requires a high degree of precision.

KCBR LIVE LIFE LIKE, with a text by Das Magazin journalist Daniel Ryser, is a radical contemporary document about one of the most active graffiti crews in Zurich. It is also a book about the blind spots in the city’s history.

Daniel Ryser (*1979) arbeitete als Inland-Redaktor für die Wochenzeitung WOZ und ist heute Reporter beim Magazin des Tages-Anzeigers. Sein Werk beinhaltet die Bücher Feld-Wald-Wiese. KCBR ist eine von den Sprayern Hello und Deal 2008 gegründete Graffiti-Crew aus Zürich. I Like Nsima and Fish sind zwanzig afrikanische Geschichten, die Einblick in eine Welt geben, in deren Unterschieden sich auch immer wieder Parallelen zum Westen finden.

I Like Nsima and Fish is a collection of portrait photographs of twenty teenagers from Malawi, who(—(on the suggestion of Martin Schaer(—(photographed themselves, their surroundings and daily lives with an analogue camera in 2001. Eight years later Nicola Carpi and Martin Schaer again visited the teenagers (—(by now adults(—(to see what had become of them.

The result is a book of photographs accompanied by texts in which the people portrayed write about their lives and expectations for the future. I Like Nsima and Fish is twenty African faces providing a glimpse into a world whose differences also reveal parallels to the West.

Fabricants Couleurs ging hervor aus Besuchen in den Fabriken des französischen Farbartikelunternehmens Pébéo, das neben Künstlerfarben auch Kinder- und Freizeitprodukte herstellt. Die französische Künstlerin Marie Angeletti besuchte die beiden Hauptfabriken im Süden Frankreichs und in China und arbeitete mit Angestellten beider Standorte zusammen. Ziel war es, gemeinsam mit Mitarbeitern, die in ihrer Freizeit künstlerisch tätig sind, während der Arbeit Kunst zu machen. Angeletti suchte nach Verbindungen zwischen den beiden Produktionsorten und hinterfragte dabei vor allem das Verhältnis von Bild und Bildträger.

Das Buch versammelt eine breite Mischung kollaborativer Arbeiten, wobei Angeletti eigene Bilder mit der Kunst der Angestellten sowie in der Fabrik hängenden Werken verzahnt. Autorschaft als zentrales Thema künstlerischer Arbeit wird infrage gestellt; wer was gemacht hat, ist unklar und unwichtig.

Fabricants Couleurs arose from visits that the French artist Marie Angeletti made to factories of the French color manufacturer Pébéo. The company, in addition to producing art paint, also makes creative products for children and leisure activities. The artist visited the two main factories in southern France and in China and worked with employees at both locations. The aim of the project was to create art while at work with employees who are also hobby artists. Angeletti was searching for connections between the two production sites and was especially interested in questioning the relationship between the image and the image carrier.

The book presents a broad mix of collaborative projects: Angeletti intermeshes her own works with the art of the employees and the works hanging in the factory. The project raises the question of the role of authorship in an artist’s work; who made which piece remains unclear and unimportant.

In den Jahren 1975"–"1977, noch vor seiner Zusammenarbeit mit Peter Fischli, nahm der an der Kunstgewerbeschule Basel zum Bildhauer ausgebildete David Weiss (1946"–"2012) mit seinem zeichnerischen Frühwerk an diversen nationalen und internationalen Galerien- und Museumsausstellungen teil, so etwa an der von Jean-Christophe Ammann kuratierten Ausstellung Mentalität Zeichnung (1976) im Kunstmuseum Luzern.

Die grossformatigen Arbeiten auf Papier nahmen ihren Anfang fast ausschliesslich in kleinformatigen Zeichnungsbüchern oder -heften. David Weiss betrachtete diese aber nie nur als Skizzenbücher, sondern immer schon als eigenständige Werke und zugleich als Fundus und Archiv seines gesamten Schaffens, dessen Spuren sich auch noch in späteren plastischen Werken von Fischli/Weiss finden lassen.

Die Edition Patrick Frey freut sich ausserordentlich, dieses faszinierende und zu grossen Teilen völlig neu zu entdeckende Frühwerk des weltbekannten Schweizer Künstlers gemeinsam mit der Edition Weiss neu herausgeben zu können.

Die in limitierter Auflage erscheinende repräsentative Sammlung 9 Artist’s Books 1973"–"1979 wurde in den Jahren 2010"–"2012 noch von David Weiss selbst initiiert und nach seinem Tod von Iwan Schumacher editorisch betreut.

Die originalen Zeichnungsbücher, die sich sämtlich in dem von Oskar Weiss, dem Sohn des Künstlers, kuratierten Nachlass von David Weiss befinden, darunter auch die 1974 bzw. 1975 in der Edition Pablo Stähli publizierten Werke Comix, das legendäre Regenbüchlein und die als limitierte Edition erschienene Aquarellserie Im Bad, wurden im ursprünglichen Format faksimiliert und gebunden.

Before he began working with Peter Fischli, David Weiss (1946(–(2012), who did his sculptor training at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel, participated from 1975(–(1977 in various national and international gallery and museum exhibitions where he showed his early drawings, for example in the exhibition Mentalität Zeichnung (1976), curated by Jean-Christophe Ammann in the Kunstmuseum Luzern.

Almost without exception, these large-format works on paper originated from small-format drawing books or pads that David Weiss never regarded as sketchbooks but instead saw as independent works and as part of the pool and archive of his entire artistic oeuvre, traces of which can also be found in later sculptural works

by Fischli/Weiss.

This representative collection 9 Artist’s Books 1973(–1979, published in a limited edition, was initiated by David Weiss himself; after his death the editorial work was overseen by Iwan Schumacher.

The original sketchbooks, all of which are part of the David Weiss estate curated by the artist’s son Oskar Weiss, including the works Comix, the legendary Regenbüchlein and the water-color series Im Bad, published in 1974/1975 in the Edition Pablo Stähli, have been printed and bound in a limited edition as a facsimile of the original format.

Alle zwei Minuten donnert eine Passagiermaschine Westanflug auf Piste 14 vorüber, ihr Schatten so gross wie ein Hügel.

At first glance it appears to be a series of black and white photos showing gently rolling hills. But then the eye begins to catch notice of large shadows on the ground. These surreal and mildly threatening undefined forms reveal themselves to be the shadows cast by airplanes. And what was perceived to be pastoral landscape images are actually pictures of the landing lane at Zurich airport(—(abbreviated ZRH and known in pilot radio talk as Zulu Romeo Hotel. Every two minutes a passenger airplane thunders toward Runway 14 from the West, casting a shadow as big as a hill.
