This catalog was printed by the Italian printer Musumeci on leftover paper and dead stock of cancelled jobs. In the wake of COVID-19 and the ensuing supply chain and paper crisis, paper has these days become hard to get and expensive. Paradoxically, at the same time tons of unused paper are destroyed. As the latter is often cheaper than to re-use the paper, due to storing costs.

Polaroids Cary Loren Polaroids by American artist, musician, writer and bookshop keeper Cary Loren interleaves snapshots of his 1970s Detroit entourage with photographs of his elaborately staged collage assemblages of prints, TV stills, magazine covers, stickers, movie posters and other ephemera. The Polaroid medium enables him to manipulate what are seemingly unrelated visual idioms and image carriers in the development process by scratching and pressing the emulsion and combining them into pictures of painterly quality. Loren’s alchemy of works fuses personal with mythological elements, mixing Christian iconography with icons of pop, sci-fi / monster and B-movie culture with the Golden Age of Hollywood as well as aesthetics from trash magazine publications (The National Enquirer, Famous Monsters of Filmland and Screw) into a highly idiosyncratic post-Warholian pop cultism. The Addams Family rubs shoulders with heavenly angels, as does the notions of the grotesque morphing with the beautiful. It’s Loren’s reinterpretation of Dante’s Inferno which is lined with the chaotic backdrop of cupcakes and hearts. Loren ultimately creates ecstatic pictorial altars of memento mori, at once reverentially and irreverently indulging his obsession with pop and trash culture, glamour, transience and death. This artist’s book includes an interview conducted by American artist Cameron Jamie in cemeteries beside the graves of Loren’s idols (including Vampira, Ed Wood Jr, Jane Mansfield), where Loren’s own life story is told against the biographical background of those buried icons of pop culture.
Cary Loren (b. 1955 in Detroit) is an artist, musician and author. He is one of the founders of the legendary noise / rock band Destroy All Monsters along with Mike Kelley, Jim Shaw and Niagara. His works are included in the collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. As of 1982, he is co-owner of the bookshop Book Beat in Oak Park, Michigan.

Monsters in Suits Nicolas Frey It stares grimly out of its wide-open bloodshot eyes, while the row of tentacles concealing its oral fissure seem to judder voraciously. The membrane covering the next one’s head is so thin you can see its brain bulging out beneath it. Still others have flat reptilian faces or canine heads, trunks, beaks, pointed ears, feelers and / or teeth sticking up through the tops of their heads. Wherever you look you’ll see warts, bristly, pathologically proliferating tufts and mops of hair, staring cyclops’ eyes, droopy ears, impish toothless grins, ginormous eyes with multiple pupils. And in between, details of their sleeves, cufflinks and shirt buttons displaying skulls, as if from a mail-order catalog of horror. Monsters in Suits neatly lines up this whole cabinet of horrors in a series of mock-official busts. The bigshots of politics and business are captured and caricatured here in dark blue ballpoint pen. But these aren’t straightforward portraits of Nestlé’s CEO (“Water is not a human right”), the head of the Ku Klux Klan or the ringleaders of far-right youth groups. They are distorted by the subconscious into grotesque monsters and bogeymen, each fitted out with the trappings of respectability: namely a suit and tie. They’re ready for business — whatever the cost to the welfare of the world. Here, for once, they show their true colors — and their true mugs.

FUTURE MEMORIES Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs FUTURE is a series of five or six publications by Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs to be published by Edition Patrick Frey over the next few years. The various chapters in the series will be published on an ongoing basis, though not according to any content-based planning or timetable. The idea is to make the most of our present-day capabilities to react directly to events or sensibilities and rapidly publish the results. The first installment of the FUTURE series, entitled FUTURE MEMORIES, explores how our conceptions of the future have changed over the past few decades, how that affects our take on the present and our reactions to changes that lie ahead. Re-created by Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs for the most part out of archival material, the pictures in this book constitute a material exploration of the fact that every vision or illustration of the future is bound to be a collage of images drawn from the past. Using a combination of large-format analog photography and various digitally controlled laser technologies, the artists have created a visual world that makes sci-fi allusions and takes an associative approach to an emotional world that swings back and forth between the optimism of the artists’ childhood and the dystopianism of the present day and age.
Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs (Swiss, both b. 1979) studied photography at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK. Since 2003, they work together on photography, film and installation projects. Edition Patrick Frey already published their books The Great Unreal and Continental Drift.

Pathé’O HAMMER (Sereina Rothenberger and David Schatz), Catherine Morand, Flurina Rothenberger Pathé’O, originally from Burkina Faso, is an African fashion icon in every sense of the word. Known for his collections far beyond his chosen home Ivory Coast, the designer’s visionary legacy has been influencing the aesthetic standards and experience of fashion on the African continent for over 30 years and has also led to a recent collaboration with the fashion house Dior. His distinct design aesthetics and cutting-edge approach to sustainability alongside a gift for combining cultural commitment with entrepreneurial creativity have inspired designers of all ages. For long it was common for politicians and showbiz celebrities in West African former French colonies to dress in a Western manner. In this context Pathé’O approached his work with the clear intention to raise appreciation amongst Africans for a local fashion style and industry. In the 80s, Pathé’O became friends with Thomas Sankara, president of Upper Volta, later Burkina Faso, and a proponent of Pan-Africanism. Pathé’O was heavily influenced by Sankara’s decisiveness to promote local pride and cultural heritage and from this point on he solely relied on using locally produced fabrics. His creations became a contemporary tribute to cultural heritage, history and identity. A further prominent encounter Pathé’O experienced was with Nelson Mandela, who was the first African president to choose his vibrant designs and light cotton fabrics over a Western business suit. And he was soon to be followed by other heads of states, as well as stars of the showbiz and sports, and of course Madame et Monsieur Tout-le-Monde. Pathé’O’s fabrics are his trademark and he has a lifelong experience of fusing global fashion trends with a wide range of African textiles and knowledge, hence keeping the local heritage alive and ever evolving. For the first time, this book traces the extraordinary journey of Pathé’O and his brand. The craftsmanship and treasures of his creations provide a better understanding of the spectrum of fashion in West Africa, the mergers of a global present with a rich cultural heritage. The book explores topics ranging from the fashion and textile industry to labor migration, cultural heritage, politics and showbiz, and spans an arc from the past to the present.

A Few of My Favorites Armando Alleyne “I don’t only focus on jazz musicians. I also paint my family or iconic personalities such as Félix Trinidad, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Amadou Diallo and The Notorious B.I.G. who in one rendition is carrying the cross with Etta James as an angel. In a painting collage of Biggie, I placed a Tropicana Juice packaging where a handkerchief would be. With the jazz musicians I’d do the same; I collage cereal and cracker boxes to the subject matter. This reflects my belief that music is fortifying.” — Armando Alleyne A Few of My Favorites is the first book of collected works by New York artist, Armando Alleyne. His painted and collaged renditions of jazz musicians, Afro-Latin singers, boxers, but also family members and acquaintances have a rhythm all-their-own. Parallel to his incessant practice of painting portraits of Black icons, Alleyne allows elements of his lived experience to take form in his work. Series such as Shelter Blues animate his first-hand experiences of homelessness. Another series, Maria’s Song calls on a pantheon of religious symbolism to pay homage to the sister he lost to AIDS. Included are erotic paintings which the artist based on magazine ads and models he staged. Never shying away from the seminal, the sensual or the political, Alleyne’s lifetime of paintings tell a story of how we are subject to our city and how in it we can search for the tools to heal. The artworks are presented alongside a series of snapshots and personal anecdotes that memorialize artworks sold and people who are no longer with us. Armando Alleyne (b. 1959, New York) grew up in Lower Manhattan and lives and works in Brookyn, NY. His work has most recently been included in Refuge, an online group show curated by Nicole Mouriño for 440 Gallery, in July 2020. Throughout the decades, Alleyne’s work has been shown in numerous galleries and institutions in New York. Also he has illustrated publications including Blackheart 2: The Prison Issue — A Journal of Writing and Graphics by Black Gay Men (1984), Black Music, Black Poetry: Blues and Jazz’s Impact on African American Versification (Gordon E. Thompson, 2014), Kwanzaa in the Gay and Lesbian Family (Imani Rashid, 2011) and Saving the World from Self — Or Should I Say Selfishness (Philip Regman, 2010).

120 bpm Philipp Mueller 120 bpm is the average number of beats per minute on a techno track. So 120 bpm, the book, raps out some high-density forward-thrusting photo sequences from the years of techno’s meteoric rise in Switzerland to become one of the last great youth movements here, leaving its massive imprint on the nightlife, clubs and ongoing innovation in electronic dance music to this day. Swiss photographer Philipp Mueller covered the dawn of the Swiss techno scene in the early 1990s in his raw shots of Zürich’s first street parades, underground raves, and parties — whether backstage in clubs or in the intimacy of private venues — for various magazines. His photographs are interleaved here with facsimiled clippings from rave magazines and fanzines as well as first-hand accounts from some of the ravers who made the nascent scene.
Philipp Mueller, born in Zürich and currently based in Paris, is a professional portrait photographer of people in sports, music and film. His most illustrious subjects to date include the Pet Shop Boys, Daniel Brühl and Roger Federer. His work appears in L’Uomo Vogue, Vogue Germany, GQ and various other publications.

Heroes and Ghosts Mathis Gasser In the middle of each painting stands a lone figure, facing the viewer, eerily still and, in some cases, menacing. The figures are borrowed from various media, ranging from pop culture, including Hollywood blockbusters, pulp horror, science fiction, manga and comics, to esoterica and works of art. Heroes and Ghosts is an ongoing series of figurative oil-on-canvas paintings by Swiss-British artist Mathis Gasser. This anthropological pictorial atlas of fictional characters is peopled by ghostly (anti-) heroes and (anti-)heroines, figures and narratives of the past that abide in our collective memory, continually transformed by contemporary culture — at an ever-increasing pace due to growing demand in the digital realm — and resurfacing in all sorts of different media. Gasser removes these figures from their narrative and media contexts and transfers them to the canvas, where they stand as if frozen in mid-action, though it’s up to the viewer to connect the dots and divine the nature of that action. In the stories in which they debut, these characters often embody the forces of violence, resistance or chaos within the social order, dredging up the suppressed fears and anxieties of contemporary liberal democracies and bringing them to light. They circulate in the creative realm of the now globalized systems that begat them, functioning as a means of cultural management of social tension, civil commotion and revolt.
Mathis Gasser (b. 1984, Zürich) is a London-based artist. His recent solo and group exhibitions include the following venues: Swiss Institute, New York (with Angharad Williams, 2021); Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2020); Lady Helen, London; Haus zur Liebe, Schaffhausen, Switzerland (2019); Centre Culturel Suisse, Paris; Cordova, Barcelona; Chewday’s, London; Kunsthaus Glarus, Glarus, Switzerland (2017).

Vom Leben einer Unangepassten Elisabeth Kübler Born into a bourgeois family in Buchs, Switzerland, in 1931, Elisabeth Kübler was just shy of twenty when she acted on the urge to break away from her conservative milieu: after graduating from a course of teacher training, she went on to study acting at Zürich’s Bühnenstudio, which proved to be one turning point in her life. And after her stint on the stage, Elisabeth and her husband Jörn Kübler toured Switzerland with the Circus Knie for ten years. It all started because she wanted to become a sea lion tamer, she reminisces. The next turning point came in 1969 when, through the good offices of Gustav Zumsteg, the Swiss silk merchant, art collector and proprietor of the restaurant Kronenhalle in Zürich, the couple took charge of the renowned Galerie Maeght in Zürich. Jörn Kübler died in 1975, after which Elisabeth ran the gallery by herself. Her exhibitions would subsequently leave their stamp on Zürich’s cultural life. She retired in 1994, but art remains a vital element of her life. So does cultivating the art of everyday living, including everything from tying bouquets and cooking to fashion and interior design. This book includes essays by various authors from within the Swiss cultural scene, several interviews with Elisabeth Kübler, and a rich trove of photographs and documents drawn from the fascinating life of a maverick, an unconventional woman who jealously guarded her freedom to go her own way. — Susanna Koeberle

La mia commedia dell’arte Jacqueline Burckhardt “Art is my oxygen. It is also an inexhaustible horn of plenty, across the ages and disciplines.” Jacqueline Burckhardt approaches art from many different angles: as a former restorer of artworks, as an art historian, as the initiator of the performance art program at the Kunsthaus Zürich, as a co-editor of the art magazine Parkett, as a curator of site-specific art on the Novartis Campus in Basel, as a lecturer at the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, Switzerland, and as the director of the Sommerakademie residency program at the Zentrum Paul Klee. She has also been involved in cultural policymaking, having served as the president of the Swiss Federal Art Commission for nine years. Running through La mia commedia dell’arte is an extended meandering conversation between Burckhardt and curator / art historian Juri Steiner, which reveals Burckhardt’s “inter esse”, her being in between and in the thick of the field of art. As effortless as it appears, the conversation is nonetheless profound and attractively illustrated, evolving into a fascinating account of Burckhardt’s thought and work. Like rhizomes, the subject matter branches out into her many areas of endeavor. It touches on the twofold historicity of works of art, which must be taken into account in art restoration in particular, and which is so masterfully and playfully handled by Giulio Romano, the “stage director of an antiquity brought back to life”, on whom she wrote her dissertation back in the day. The interlocutors consider Herbert Lachmayer’s concept of “aesthetic intelligence” and the metaphysical nature of a work of art. They introduce us to Kairos, the Greek god of the opportune moment, as well as to Renaissance patroness of the arts Isabella d’Este, a botfly and an octopus. Burckhardt has been writing about contemporary art for forty years now. The selected writings included in this book tie into some of the topics broached in the conversation and provide a representative cross-section of her essays. Five textual and visual inserts by Laurie Anderson, Kurt W. Forster, Katharina Fritsch, Herbert Lachmayer and Pipilotti Rist give us a sense of Burckhardt’s ties to these artists and authors.

AA Bronson’s House of Shame AA Bronson A nocturnal secret ritual performed by two naked men in a hotel room in Rotterdam; a woven tent where the artist dressed as a mage encounters visitors to share their traumas; buttplugs adorned with rooster feathers; a collection of queer zines; anal-sprayed tartan paintings; a zen garden of mugwort. A few of the singular artistic gestures AA Bronson committed in the last few years are united in this book. After his General Idea partners, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal, passed away in 1994, AA Bronson had to learn how to keep on living by himself, inventing a personal identity without his former companions, creating a new community of work, friendship and love. These issues have been at the core of his art in the last 25 years. He has developed a work where collaboration with other artists, especially younger queer artists, and creation of a social bond are central. This book aims to emphasize this social dimension in his work through an overview of a series of exhibitions he made between 2013 and 2018. These are shows that bring together a community of artists; shows where performances and rituals, often invisible, contribute to the creation of a shared experience; a unique blend of art, friendship, collaboration, spirituality and humor. The book is in two-parts. An initial monographic section, which includes an essay and an interview with the artist, brings together the works and the exhibitions. In the second, choral part, friends have been invited to bear witness and write a sort of ‘journal de bord,’ telling the tale of five years of the artist’s community life. AA Bronson is a Canadian artist living in Berlin. The first 25 years of his artistic life were devoted to General Idea, an artist group he formed with Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal. The following 25 years were devoted to a solo career. He has been involved in publishing since the 1960s when he contributed to the creation of a free press. From 1971 to 1989, he published FILE magazine. Along his career, spanning over 50 years, he has published more than 100 books, magazines and zines. He also has directed the artists’ bookstores Art Metropole (Toronto) and Printed Matter, Inc. (New York), and co-founded the NY Art Book Fair and the LA Art Book Fair.

Orlando Klodin Erb Klodin Erb’s Orlando series is based on the eponymous novel by Virginia Woolf, in which a poet lives for over five centuries and mysteriously changes sex. So far the series comprises nearly two hundred mostly small painted portraits in a wide range of different styles. The subjects are male, female or of undefined gender. The series is, on the one hand, a study in portrait painting that also explores “the history of art and the time inherent in and associated with it”, as the artist explains. It’s also an investigation of her own identity as a painter, on the other hand. “The sheer quantity of images makes it possible to immerse oneself, even lose oneself, in the faces,” writes Erb, “transforming the viewer into a universal being in a timeless existence.” Paradigms of demarcation and identification are dissolved as a result and reworked into a larger context (I am many, I am you, etc.). Klodin Erb’s artistic exploration of identity was fleshed out during a conversation over dinner in a pavilion by Lake Zürich. The object of this event was to dispense with everyday egos by donning costumes and make-up and, in the experimental setting of a performance-art dinner, tap into a meta-ego in order to discuss the themes of the Orlando series: identity, gender and role models, the construct of time, ageing and the longing for eternal life / youth, humanoids and artificial intelligence, the last human. The transcript of this conversation runs through the book and ties it all together.
Klodin Erb (b. 1963) is a Swiss painter based in Zürich, where she studied fine arts at the Schule für Gestaltung. Her paintings explore identity and self-referentiality through gestural brushwork and abundant allusions to the history of art and design. Alongside her artistic work, she teaches at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Solitudes of Human Places Jong Won Rhee A special moment in photographing is the short-lived moment just before shutter release when you are unconsciously moved by something. You try to capture that fleeting moment of emotions flowing through you without fully understanding them. These pictures try to preserve that moment through the medium of photography, and represent my personal interaction with Korea, where they were taken. This unexpected flow of feelings in the instant before releasing the shutter informs my experience with the world and defines who I am as a person. These images of South Korea’s plain and unadorned fringes peer into the depths of human solitude. They imagine people’s unconscious striving to come to terms with their loneliness by facing up to the human condition squarely, steadfastly, serenely. — Jong Won Rhee The human subjects of Jong Won Rhee’s photographs are, for the most part, turning away or turned in upon themselves. In fact, the characteristic blue rooftops, blooming poppies, garish billboards and store signs, the bundled spring onions at a market stall and the lush fields of South Korea all seem more colorful than the people we come across in these scenes of contemporary everyday life there.
Jong Won Rhee (b. 1973, Hong Kong) grew up in South Korea, the US, Italy and Australia. After studying English in Seoul, he went on to study industrial design at Central Saint Martins in London and automotive design at Coventry University. Back in South Korea, he has withdrawn himself from industry and now devotes himself entirely to photography.

Lunar Invasion Francisco Sierra Francisco Sierra worked on a single painting for nine months. It’s about 1.5 m high and 2.5 m wide. It shows three jumbo jets under construction. He spent day after day, from early morning till late at night, standing, sitting or crouching before the canvas. Which testifies to the artist’s patience and perseverance — and how much he believes in his subject. But Sierra also does small and medium-sized paintings. And triptychs. As well as subjects other than jumbos, like magnificent sunsets, delicate tea sets and hypnotic Möbius strips, for example. He paints penis-shaped Christmas trees hung with ornaments. Avocados kissing. Ambiguously steaming piles of excrement. And his formal training as a violinist reverberates in his pictures time and again. Some of his subjects are fantastical, some mundane — though that seemingly mundane content is what makes these pictures peculiarly uncanny. Francisco Sierra addresses the question of what form contemporary figurative painting might take. He faithfully and precisely paints things, reality, but the subjects he picks seldom represent what they seem to at first glance. Sierra is interested in the transformation of apparent clarity into something new and mysterious. He explores the pitfalls of contemporary photographic reproduction and the transformative potential of painting, which involves surrealist and conceptual approaches. Besides their masterful technical proficiency, what Sierra’s works have in common is humor — sometimes grotesque, sometimes in discreet doses, a mere trace element, homeopathic. Lunar Invasion now provides an overview of the wide-ranging œuvre of paintings and sculptures by this Chilean-born Swissbased artist. — Max Küng
Francisco Sierra (b. 1977, Santiago de Chile) emigrated to Switzerland in 1986, where he is currently based in the village of Cotterd in the Canton of Vaud. Sierra is a trained violinist and self-taught visual artist. He is also a member of the performance collective Jetpack Bellerive and, since 2018, an artistic associate at the ETH Zürich.

Oh Yeah / Yello 40 Boris Blank, Dieter Meier Forty years ago, armed with tape, scissors and a hefty dose of wit, Yello — aka Boris Blank, Dieter Meier and, initially, Carlos Peron — , set out to write their very own chapter of music history. In no time at all they found themselves playing The Roxy club in New York, marveling at the seething sea of bodies dancing themselves into ecstasy to the beat of Yello’s seminal single Bostich. Today, thanks to albums like Solid Pleasure, You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess and Flag, and singles like Oh, Yeah and The Race, Yello are enshrined amongst the pantheon of electropop pioneers. Blank and Meier recently released their 14th studio album, Point.Yello, proving once again that age is no obstacle to musical daring and adventure. Yello owe their enduring success to a steadfast refusal to follow the rules of the music industry. This book celebrates the days when “sound painter” Blank and word wizard Meier first set out to create their Yello world. So, naturally, it doesn’t stick to the beaten track of glossy pop music biographies either. Meier had already displayed a keen eye for pointedly nonsensical aesthetics as an experimental filmmaker and conceptual artist before delving into music. And Blank, tinkering away in the music studio, was also hip to the power of visual representation. For Oh Yeah / Yello 40, the two artists dug deep into their souvenir boxes to come up with an intriguing haul of Polaroids, posters, letters, fanzine reviews, sketches, pictures of their trip to Cuba—and even the handwritten sheet music to Bostich. Oh Yeah / Yello 40 is more than a scrapbook from the days when we were all young. The book harks back to the gleefully playful zeitgeist of the post-punk era in a city which, as only fools may have forgotten, was the cradle of Dada.

Ein Leben mit Kunst und Künstler:innen / A Life with Art and Artists Trix + Robert Haussmann Trix and Robert Haussmann are well known both in Switzerland and internationally for their vast contribution to design and interiors. Living and working together since the ‘60s, symbiotically creating and also sharing wonderful interiors filled with works of art and beautiful objects, one can think of them — and the spaces they inhabit — as an ever-evolving double self-portrait. The Haussmanns have had close ties to the avant-garde of their time, have followed the various trends and artistic currents and have actively participated in the local scenes of Zürich or Bern. Through documenting their numerous exchanges and conversations with artists, dealers and creative kindred spirits, this book is a testimony of their lifelong interest in the visual arts, their active, enthusiastic and witty involvement with the Swiss art scene as well as their rather playful commitment to it. A conversation with Swiss author and curator Dieter Schwarz reveals a number of events and anecdotes that also attest to the couple’s fascinating life with art which they have collected intuitively rather than with a particular strategy in mind throughout their lives and careers. The numerous photographic documents of their unique and somewhat exuberant interiors that span almost five decades and several homes are exemplary both of the distinctive way in which Trix and Robert Haussmann welcome works of art into their everyday lives alongside their furniture — including their own — and their various artefacts as well as of their very personal and playful use of mirrors.

Untitled, 1964–1998 Josef Herzog Josef Herzog (1939–1998) dated the start of his serious work from 1964, when he first began producing watercolors with surreal, clearly outlined planar configurations and ink drawings with labyrinthine “all-over” cellular structures. He remained faithful to the techniques of drawing and watercolor in all his subsequent work. And while he continually changed subjects and atmosphere, the line remained the signature element of his drawings, a variable constant in his œuvre. Beginning in 1975, his lines broke free from their outlining function to become a means of expression in and of themselves, whether in pencil, oil crayon, pen and ink, or watercolors. Besides a few series that do feature the occasional planar element, Herzog thereafter steadfastly confined himself to exploring the possibilities of purely linear design. The lines differ in character considerably from one series to the next, depending on the format and choice of drawing medium, which take both format and medium on ever-greater importance in the utter absence of identifiable motifs. Josef Herzog’s work has been the subject of a number of reviews since 1971. What’s missing, however, is a currentday look back at his exuberant œuvre. This monograph of his work from the 1970s on serves to accompany the Herzog retrospective, opening in March 2022 at Kunstmuseum Lucerne, and to fill that gap in the literature.
The Swiss artist Josef Herzog (b. 1939, Zug, Switzerland; d. 1998, ibid.) began his studies under Max von Moos at the Lucerne Kunstgewerbeschule in 1961. In 1970 he joined Heiner Kielholz, Max Matter, Markus Müller, Christian Rothacher and Hugo Suter in the Ateliergemeinschaft Ziegelrain, an art studio collective in Aarau. He was based in his native Zug from 1976 until his death.

The Image-Sweep. Paintings 1989–2001 Matthias Groebel Matthias Groebel’s activities in the late ’80s sound more like the plot of a cyberpunk novel than a sober account of a serious artist’s professional practice: he spent those years rummaging around in electronic waste dumps in Münster, Germany, in search of windshield wiper and photocopier motors, bicycle chains and other parts to use in constructing a three-axle painting machine capable of painting according to his specifications. Meanwhile, he was also fiddling with parabolic antennas in order to catch signals from far, far away. Over the next decade, Groebel spent countless nights changing the channels, this time rummaging around for TV stills to paint with the aid of his computer-controlled machine. The upshot is a series of paintings that anticipated technocultural developments and plumbed the collective psychological depths of satellite television and mass media. This book is the first comprehensive exposition of Groebel’s remarkable machine paintings from 1989 to 2001, along with two essays about Groebel’s unusual work.
Matthias Groebel (b. 1958) is a German artist currently based in Cologne. Since 1989, he works with photography, video and digital image processing, using various home-built and modified devices, in particular a computer-controlled painting machine since 1989. Groebel showed and published his work under a pseudonym from 2010 to 2020.

WHY OMAHA? Darius Koehli “Mad Dog” Vachon, “Tarzan Tyler”, Masao “Rusher” Kimura — the ring names of the professional wrestlers who grappled for glory in the AWA (American Wrestling Association) were as evocative as they were hair-raising. And their bouts in the ring were spectacular extravaganzas with mass public appeal. It’s the Summer of 1969 and nine-year-old Darius Koehli has just left Zürich for a nine-month sojourn in the US with his father. He suddenly finds himself in a whole new world. And why the heck does it have to be Omaha, Nebraska, of all places? Fortunately, he soon makes friends with Carl, the neighbors’ son. They take him along to the hottest spot in town, the Civic Auditorium, to see some catch wrestling. With his brand-new Kodak Instamatic, Darius begins taking pictures, capturing the ring’s heroes before, during and after their bouts. With a remarkable eye for slapstick and physical comedy, and from a pint-sized 9-year-old’s perspective, he produces hundreds of snapshots of these humongous hulks. The selection featured in this book provides a glimpse of a bygone era in which professional wrestling was just taking off — and blowing away the TV audience. On a visit to Zürich in the summer of 2019, Darius Koehli comes across the photo album he’d put together 50 years ago. Memories from Omaha rise up again, magical names emerge from a distant past, evoking crowded auditoriums and brash, boisterous announcers, rowdy fans cheering and booing the contenders, the sweat and blood of battle-hardened bodies and mysterious masked accomplices, as well as moments of choreographed, sometimes even graceful combats.
Darius Koehli was born in Zürich and studied photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology (upstate New York) and the Ecole Nationale de la Photographie in Arles. For over thirty years Koehli has been based in Barcelona, where he co-founded the Vision Photo Agency in 1992 and has since freelanced as a photographer, picture editor and exhibition curator. Since 2005 he has devoted himself entirely to his artistic projects.

Magnificent Obsessions Saved My Life Matthias Brunner
Biographies can be as various as human lives. And yet Magnificent Obsessions Saved My Life really is an outlier, a (auto)biography of a different kind that retraces milestones and turning points in the life of a post-war artist from a dysfunctional family, set against the backdrop of his ’68 generation’s experiences of sexual liberation and his all too personal experience of two deadly pandemics: AIDS and Covid-19. But these biographical and historical elements of the author’s life come to the fore in an ongoing dialogue with Hollywood classics, films d’auteur, contemporary art and literature. For a work of cinematic or visual art amounts to nothing if it tells you nothing about your own life: film and art are always about what was and what could have been. Magnificent Obsessions takes up these existential questions in texts and images, including selections from Brunner’s impressive collection of movie stills and reproductions of his favorite art works. As in movies, people are the focus, the protagonists, of Brunner’s sometimes mordantly blunt and yet affectionate, sometimes almost tender writings. When he loses the love of his life, Swiss art dealer Thomas Ammann, to AIDS, he writes about their shared happiness so as not to be consumed by grief. He remembers the glamorous Elisabeth Bossard (Thema Selection), his lover for many years, and relates anecdotes from a flirtation in Venice with Edmund White, the American writer who became a friend. He recounts his love-hate relationship with Swiss filmmaker Daniel Schmid, replete with intimate glimpses of the late German filmmakers Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Schroeter, their works and the whole scene around them. It was the film curator Brunner who brought the films of his friends John Waters and Andy Warhol to Switzerland early on — bypassing the censors. Brunner knew the light and dark sides of the Dream Factory, but was always ready and willing to succumb yet again to its Imitation of Life, as Douglas Sirk titled one of his great melodramas. Matthias “This” Brunner (b. 1945 in Zürich) ran arthouse cinemas in Zürich for over thirty-five years, curated screenings at Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach for over twenty years. He has received numerous awards for his work.

NO PONTE Giuseppe Micciché Over summer vacation, when we’d return to our village along with so many other families who’d emigrated abroad, our first taste of home was the arancini we ate on the ferry crossing from the Italian mainland to Sicily. We were welcomed back by the golden statue of the Madonnina, the patron saint of Messina, visible from afar on the other shore. It wasn’t till much later in life that I began taking an interest in the coastline around Messina, which has been of great geopolitical importance since ancient times. The Italian mainland is so close here that whole generations of locals have been obsessed with the idea of building a bridge between the Calabrian and Sicilian shores. This gigantomaniac and highly controversial bridge project was announced by Mussolini during the war and fleshed out by Berlusconi during his term as prime minister. It has been repeatedly thrashed out, planned out … and then ultimately rejected. It would be the world’s longest and tallest suspension bridge — and built on sandy, earthquake-prone ground. To some, this prestigious undertaking would symbolize Sicily’s economic upswing; to others, it hangs like the sword of Damocles over the region and the whole country. I myself was fascinated by that bridge that’s not on any map, so I began photographically documenting the coast in 2006. The result of my long-term project is a portrait of a region at a standstill, waiting in a state of indifferent, frustrated or hopeful anticipation. This photo essay documents the transformation and hesitant attempts to refurbish the (sub)urban coastal stretches, and shows locals in their workaday lives, such as fishermen, whose earnings from swordfish hunting have long since ceased to be enough to live on. NO PONTE seeks to show how something’s absence affects us as much as its presence would. If the bridge is ever built, I won’t include any pictures of it in this series: I’ll take the last shot when they lay the foundation stone. — Giuseppe Micciché Giuseppe Micciché (b. 1971) is an Italian Swiss photographer based in Zürich. Edition Patrick Frey also previously published his photo essay Cento Passi (2014).

Die Nudistenfilme des Schweizer Werner Kunz Matthias Uhlmann Starting in the mid-1950s, anyone keen on watching ordinary people in the buff on the silver screen could check out the naturist films of Werner Kunz (1926–2018). This Swiss autodidact’s groundbreaking films featured nudists (especially women) in their customary stomping grounds, engaging in summer sports and games on land and in the water. These productions were the ultimate in (legal) cinematic nudity in those prude days. Banned by censors in some countries as the epitome of indecency, Kunz’s films were shown elsewhere as instructive documentaries about an alternative lifestyle. Naturally, the visual appeal of all those bare bodies remained undiminished by the documentary frame, so over time Kunz’s work pushed the boundaries of what was allowed by the censors. For a whole decade, these films, which Kunz wrote, produced, directed and marketed himself, had a virtual monopoly on cinematic nudity. Special screenings of his works were held pell-mell in large and small multi-purpose venues in Swiss cities and even small towns. By the early 1960s, however, they were also being regularly shown in cinemas — and eventually made quite a splash abroad. After all, what other Swiss film can boast a three-and-a-half-month run at a New York movie theater? In this first in-depth exploration of the forgotten Swiss film pioneer Werner Kunz, Zürich film scholar Matthias Uhlmann recaps the production, marketing and reception of Kunz’s extant œuvre. This thoroughly researched monograph features summaries of the contents and a great many stills from his two dozen nudist films (including four feature-length motion pictures), as well as a rich variety of visual material from the director’s private archive. In interviews conducted by the author, the pioneer of sexual liberation in international film, the “godfather of all that stuff”, tells his own story.
Matthias Uhlmann (b. 1972) is a film scholar and antiquarian bookseller based in Zürich.

Walter Grab (1927–1989). Werkkatalog Julia Schallberger, Christoph Kappeler, André Grab (eds.) Walter Grab turned to Surrealism after traveling to Paris in the late 1940s. In 1950, heavily influenced by the visual worlds of Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dalí, André Masson and René Magritte, he founded “Phoenix”, a group of German and Austrian artists along with Swiss Surrealists Kurt Seligmann, Otto Tschumi and Ernst Maass. In the wake of the international resurgence of Surrealism, which had been presumed dead and consigned to the annals of art history, Grab soon gained recognition in Switzerland (especially Zürich) and Germany. In 1965 Walter Grab and Meret Oppenheim represented Switzer-land in the Surrealismo e arte fantástica show at the 8th São Paulo Biennial. Grab’s pictorial idiom and idiosyncratic style and technique are unmistakable: his constructive geometric elements are interlocked with figurative and narrative elements to form surreal scenes resembling stage sets. To show life in all its starkest contrasts was the Surrealist credo to which Grab, too, clearly subscribed. He became known as an enfant terrible of the art world, moreover, for his melancholy, irascible and addictive personality. In addition to providing an unprecedented overview of Walter Grab’s œuvre, this catalog also presents a wide range of different angles on his art, including subjective looks at individual works, art history essays and an associative correspondence using the cadavre exquis technique that was so dear to the Surrealists. Julia Schallberger (b. 1986) has been working at the Aargauer Kunsthaus Aarau since 2015. She also works as a freelance curator and author for exhibitions, literary periodicals and publications. Christoph Kappeler (b. 1948) is a psychoanalyst, painter and art collector based in Zürich-Wollishofen since 1972. He is also active as a lecturer and consultant in Switzerland and abroad. André Grab (b. 1952), Walter Grab’s son, took over the bookshop H.U. Zbinden & Co. in 1986. He later worked in film production and distribution and, beginning in the late 1970s, regularly published short stories, columns and features in Swiss newspapers and magazines.

I made a sculpture of a motorcycle, which was a nice motorcycle but in the biker world it’s nothing special. Vincent said he could paint motorcycles so I thought it would be interesting for him to customize a real one. It actually also ended up being in a real motorcycle show as well so it brought my two worlds together. I’ve had motorcycles forever but before it was always a separate world now everything is mixed up. – Olivier Mosset

THE WASTE PAPER PROJECT was founded in 2018 amid growing concerns about the ecological efficiency of today’s printing, publishing, fashion and arts industries. WPP collaborates with producers, institutions, and companies to envision the potential of local waste materials, and to directly re-use and upcycle waste and dead stock. WPP aims to create something new by reflecting circular phenomena through interaction and experimentation with production and supply chain processes.
