The Manor Garden

Lorelei

The fountains are dry and the roses over. Incense of death. Your day approaches. The pears fatten like little buddhas. A blue mist is dragging the lake.

It is no night to drown in: A full moon, river lapsing Black beneath bland mirror-sheen,

You move through the era of fishes, The smug centuries of the pigHead, toe and finger Come clear the shadows. History Norishes these broken flutings, These crowns of acanthus, And the crow settles her garments. You inherit white heather, a bee’s wing, Two suicides, the family wolves, Hours of blankness. Some hard stars Already yellow the heavens. The spider on its own string Crosses the lake. The worms Quit their usual habitations. The small birds converge, converge With their gifts to a difficult borning.

The blue water-mists dropping Scrim after scrim like fishnets Though fishermen are sleeping, The massive castle turrets Doubling themselves in a glass All stillness. Yet these shapes float Up toward me, troubling the face Of quiet. From the nadir They rise, their limbs ponderous With richness, hair heavier Than sculptured marble. They sing Of a world more full and clear Than can be. Sisters, your song Bears a burden too weighty For the whorled ear’s listening Here, in a well-steered country, Under a balanced ruler. Deranging by harmony

Frog Autumn Summer grows old, cold-blooded mother. The insects are scant, skinny. In these palustral homes we only Croak and wither. Mornings dissipate in somnolence. The sun brightens tardily Among the pithless reeds. Flies fail us. he fen sickens. Frost drops even the spider. Clearly The genius of plenitude Houses himself elsewhwere. Our folk thin Lamentably.

Beyond the mundane order, Your voices lay siege. You lodge On the pitched reefs of nightmare, Promising sure harborage; By day, descant from borders Of hebetude, from the ledge Also of high windows. Worse Even than your maddening Song, your silence. At the source Of your ice-hearted calling -Drunkenness of the great depths. O river, I see drifting Deep in your flux of silver Those great goddesses of peace. Stone, stone, ferry me down there.
