Each moment of important decision in our lives makes a radical distinction between before and after, between the past and the future. Confronted with the necessity of a decision, we tend to look back and forth from that point to see our world in the light of the contexts and consequences of the decision we are about to make – weighing the prospects against the retrospect. Songs of Doubt does that quite literally. Like a Janus-head the music seems to be looking both forward and backward – alternating between prospect and retrospect, between expectation and memory. The piece is shaped as a series of very simple songs that undergo the complications of a decision – of doubt and hesitation. Songs of Doubt has been recorded by Roderik Povel, Nathalie Forget and Studium Chorale conducted by Hans Leenders and released in 2017 on Dacapo Records, produced by Peter Barnow. Available on all digital platforms and CD. Thanks to Bart van Dongen at Intro in Situ for commissioning the work and bringing together the fantastic team behind this work. PERFORMANCE NOTES Forwards / backwards. Placed in the score to make it clear which ‘direction of time’ is intended concerning phrasing, text, pronounciation etc.

N for niente (‘nothing’). Mostly used in combination with a following crescendo, i.e. the sound grows from nothing.

Singers:End the note abruptly, used as a general sign for imitation of reverse phrasing. Ondes Martenot:Reversed phrasing with an abrupt ending via claquement (reversed) - ending note with attack. Or by sliding off the touche d’expression to make the sound stop abruptly ( o) The word in parenthesis is the original word which the text or syllable is the reversed version of. The intention is to make the reverse pronunciation easier.
