Martin Stauning Somniloquy II (2019) for solo pianist (and their voice) Dur. 5-8′

PERFORMANCE NOTES The piece is to be performed by one solo pianist. An optional microphone (or micro-port) may be used to amplify the voice. In this case, the microphone should be routed through a small studio monitor placed under the piano facing the audience. The tempo is very free, but should initially be a rather slow one, corresponding to a natural resting pulse of q = 52-62. Any rest does not have to be in tempo, but can be longer or shorter at the discretion of the performer. Barlines serve only as separations of the piece’s different elements and for the sake of form. In general, the piece should be performed very rubato and with no real sense of pulse, underlining the fragmented nature of the music. Rallentandi should be interpreted as “molto rall.”, i.e. a significant slowing during their duration, before resuming whatever “Tempo I” has been decided. The duration of a performance must be no shorter than 5 minutes and no longer than 8 minutes.

The three-lined voice staff is an approximation staff. The top line signifies a high register of voice. The middle line, the middle register of the performers voice and the lower line, the lowest register of the voice.

A shout or scream at the very highest possible pitch and volume of the voice. Bocca chiusa: with mouth closed. Humming in a descending pattern, with each hum having a downward inflection (only occurs with bocca chiusa).

Spoken (in this case with an ascending tone of voice).

No actual pitch, but a “(s)hushing sound.

Sung at pitch, in falsetto. Always softly and not without a certain pathetic sadness.

Martin Stauning (2019)

SOMNILOQUY II Very free and rubato between q = 52 - 62 rall. rall. With a certain introverted, held-back energy
