Kasper Rofelt Shadow Phases

(2007, rev. 09)

Accordion Concerto no. 1 for accordion solo and ensemble Dur. 25’

NOTES Shadow Phases is my first concerto for classical accordion. It is inspired by my reading of Kierkegaard and is a result of my fascination with his being able to turn different concepts upside down – often to a surprising effect. The three movements of this work therefore treat 3 different subjects in unusual ways. The three movements are called ‘Nocturnal Fears’, ‘Trembling Abstractions’ and ‘Shaking Love’. Nighttime is not always the time of repose and may be be influenced by our individual fears. The unknown and the abstract may not always be something dangerous - it could turn out to be something else. Love may not just be the cause for happiness but could in fact also give birth to deep feelings of anxiety since we may be afraid of losing the object of our love. This concerto is dedicated to Bjarke Mogensen who played the solo part at the premiere in 2007. The revised version was premiered in 2009 with Århus Sinfonietta conducted by Søren K. Hansen. Bjarke Mogensen was the soloist.
