Leif Kayser (1919–2001) var en af Danmarks mest produktive komponister af især orgel- og kirkemusik. Han udgav og forhandlede selv de fleste af sine værker i sirligt kalligraferede udgaver, som han lod trykke hos Atelier Elektra. Efter hans død har det været vanskeligt at erhverve hans noder; mange har desuden været udsolgt. Endelig har enkelte værker fra Kaysers sene år kun foreligget som fotokopier. En kreds af organister tog derfor i 2016 initiativ til en genudgivelse af Kaysers orgelmusik. Vi er meget taknemmelige for den store imødekommenhed vi har oplevet, fra Leif Kaysers arvinger, Edition·S, Det Kongelige Bibliotek, og mange andre som har kunnet bidrage.

I videst muligt omfang er Kaysers egne udgivelser og trykforlæg benyttet til facsimileudgaver.

Originalformaterne er blevet tilpasset det lidt større B4-format, hvorved læseligheden er blevet forøget.

Hvor Kayser har anvendt C-nøgle, er værkerne blevet skrevet om i udgaver med almindelige nøgler. Notationen i renskrifterne følger LKs forlæg tættest muligt, således også de særlige korte bindebuer. Enkelte steder kan hjælpefortegn uden for systemerne dog være sat foran den pågældende node i stedet. Pedalet har overvejende fået sit eget system, hvor Kayser af pladshensyn ofte har noteret det i venstrehåndssystemet.

Originaludgaverne kan ses på Edition·S’ hjemmeside. I facsimileudgaverne er biblioteksstempler og katalognumre retoucheret bort efter aftale med Det Kongelige Bibliotek. Af redaktionelle grunde er de originale sidetal fjernet.

Leif Kayser (1919–2001) was one of Denmark’s most productive composers, especially of organ and church music. He personally published and sold most of his works in elegantly calligraphed editions which he had printed at Atelier Elektra. It has been difficult to procure his music after his death; much of it is also sold out. Furthermore, individual works from Kayser’s later years have only existed as photocopies. In 2016, a group of organists therefore took the initiative for a new edition of Kayser’s organ music. We are extremely grateful for the great cooperativeness shown us by Leif Kayser’s heirs, Edition·S, The Royal Danish Library – and many others who have been able to contribute.

To the greatest extent possible, Kayser’s own publications and printing sources have been used to make facsimile editions. The original formats have been adapted to the slightly larger B4 format, which enhances the readability of the music.

Where Kayser has used the C-clef, the works have been rewritten using common clefs in the new editions. Notation in the fair copies follows LK’s originals as closely as possible; this also applies to the special short ties. At certain points, however, courtesy accidentals outside the staves have been inserted instead before the affected note. In general, the pedal has been given its own stave, while Kayser, for reasons of space, has often notated it in the left-hand stave.

The original editions can be accessed on the Edition·S website. In the facsimile editions, the library copies and catalogue numbers have been removed, as agreed with The Royal Library. For editorial reasons, the original page numbers have also been removed.

Fantasien åbnes med et motiv, der baserer sig på overtonerækken og på kombinationen af den lydiske og mixolydiske skala, som Kayser hyppigt anvender. Den forhøjede kvart (lydisk) og den lave septim (mixolydisk) giver den et specielt præg. Satsen udvikles nu af motiver, som den indledende frase kan afspalte, og falder i en række sammenkædede afsnit, hvor flotte, inciterende højdepunkter veksler med meditative partier, og hvor kontrapunktik modstilles af akkordkæder.

Arabesco er en triosats baseret på en melisme fra gradualet til Helligtrekonger; overstemmerne imiterer hinanden i den yndede tarantelagtige rytme, mens pedalet i et roligere tempo bryder ind med citater fra et Credoinitial og nadverhymnen Ecce panis angelorum.

Corale bearbejder salmen ‘Guds søn kom ned fra Himmerig’ i en række sammenkædede variationer i samme veloplagte stil som ‘Nu takker alle Gud’ fra Tre improvisationer, men noget strammere komponeret.

The Fantasia opens with a motif based on the harmonic series and the combination of the Lydian and Mixolydian modes, which Kayser frequently makes use of. The augmented fourth (Lydian) and the diminished seventh (Mixolydian) produce the special feel. The movement is not developed via motifs which the introductory phrase can split off, and it falls into a series of interlinked sections where fine, inciting climaxes alternate with meditative sections, and counterpoint is contrasted with chains of chords.

Arabesco is a trio movement based on a melisma from the Gradual to the Three Wise Men; the upper parts imitate each other in the preferred tarantella-like rhythm, while the pedal, at a more steady tempo, interrupts with citations from a Credo initial and the (communion) hymn Ecce panis angelorum.

Corale adapts the hymn ‘God’s Son came down from Heaven’ in a series of interlinked variations in the same energetic style as ‘Nun danket alle Gott’ from Three Improvisations, although composed slightly more rigorously.

Fantasy and Hymn A melody hesitatingly develops, a harmony gropes its way forward. The full organ erupts, imploringly, spell-bindingly: ‘Drop down, ye heavens, from above…’ (Isaiah XLV, v. 8). The initial mood returns, although concluding this time in a hymn-like song, underpinned by rocking dance rhythms. (LK)
