NOTE

NOTE

The letter ‘D’ has common roots with the letters ‘dal’ and ‘dalet’ in the arabic and jewish alphabet. The proto-sinaitic character ‘dag’ from 1500 b.c. means ‘fish’. In the Greek and Latin language the syllables ‘di/diplo’ and ‘duo’ indicate a two-sided property: my work is a duo for violin and viola.

In ‘D’ I have set two stochastic patterns of movement against each other: a Brownian movement contra a Gaussian distribution. Both use the frequency domain but I use the twelve (gr. ‘Dodeka’) step division (gr. ‘Daiesthai’) as well. The fish in its element moves continually. ‘Sul D’ indicates that the string-player should play on the D-string, the frequency of which is 293 Herz - a little below the logarithmic mean of the human ear.

First performance: July 26.1986 by Dan Hardt and GertInge Andersson.
