Edison Eye On Wire-to-Water Pump Testing What is it and why should you be doing it?

4

The Solution | Quarterly | October 2019

WHAT IS WIRE-TO-WATER TESTING? Wire to water testing measures the mechanical work of a pump through direct measurement of pump flow (gpm) and pump differential pressure (suction and discharge pressures in feet of head). At the same time this mechanical measurement is being taken, electrical measurements (amps, volts, power, and power factor) are also being taken.

WHY CONDUCT WIRE-TO-WATER TESTING? When it comes to industrial facilities, system operation is paramount. Operating pumps at their most efficient flow rates will result in optimized system performance, however, it is not always clear how to produce these results. Wire-to-water pump testing allows you to determine how efficiently your pump system uses electricity when performing a mechanical task. Simply put, establishing the wire-to-water efficiency can result in significant reduction in energy costs.

Getting technical: The electrical energy consumed is compared to the mechanical energy delivered to the fluid to determine the wire-to-water efficiency of each pump. The information from testing is then used to generate a pump operating curve, which is then compared to the factory pump curve. Deviation between the factory curve and the operating curve indicates losses in operating performance, which are indicative of deterioration and failure. Early identification and rectification of such issues are key to cost reduction.

Program of the Quarter

Each quarter we will feature a utility incentive energy program across the US. This quarter we are highlighting the:

To receive direct updates on Incentive Programs to your mailbox, sign up here.

Large Energy User Program (LEUP) The New Jersey Office of Clean Energy (OCE)'s Large Energy Users Program (LEUP) provides significant incentives for energy efficiency and combined heat and power/fuel cell projects in New Jersey's largest commercial and industrial facilities.

LOCATION: New Jersey INCENTIVE SPECIFICATIONS: Incentives for the FY20 program (July 1, 2019 June 30, 2020) to be distributed based on the specifications below. The maximum incentive per entity is the lesser of: ›› $4 million ›› 75% of total project(s) cost ›› 90% of total NJCEP fund contribution in previous year (i.e. from all entity facilities) ›› $0.33 per projected kWh saved; $3.75 per projected Therm saved annually

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE? Does your organization contribute into the NJ Clean Energy Program Fund? Does the average billed peak demand of all facilities within your organization

meet or exceed 400 kW and/or 4,000 DTh? Does your engineering team have an energy efficiency project that checks any of the below boxes? If yes, then you may be eligible to participate in the LEUP (sample projects include, but are not limited to): ›› Installation of new Variable Frequency Drives in existing facilities ›› Replacement of existing poorly performing pumps or other equipment ›› Upgrades that include more energy efficient equipment, even if the total energy consumption will increase (e.g. an increase in consumption due to the system pumping more water) ›› Controls designed to improve system performance while reducing energy consumption Our team of energy experts can help you determine if your project qualifies for the program. If you're ready to take the next steps, click here and one of our energy experts will reach out to you with more information.

Featured Project New Jersey American Water Edison Energy has supported New Jersey American Water's (NJAW) participation in the Large Energy User Program (LEUP) since 2011 and has worked to secure over $2M in incentives on their behalf, providing professional services to design, bid and oversee the implementation of a range of energy efficiency projects across their facilities. What began as a pilot for the refurbishment of fourteen (14) pumps and the installation of six (6) Variable Frequency Drives (VFD’s) at four Pumping Stations, has since evolved into consistent program participation and implementation, realizing tangible savings and incentives. PROGRAM RESULTS: Total Sites Assessed:

13

Annual Electric Savings:

6,735,672.00 kWh

Annual Gas Savings:

55,041 therms

Total Incentives Available:

$4,258,999.48

Total Incentives Realized:

$2,384,478.54

Project highlights for the past 3 years of the LEUP program include the following:

2018

2017

2016

HVAC renovations to the Delran Water Treatment Plant and the Raritan Millstone Water Treatment Plant.

Pump optimization at the Raritan Millstone Water Treatment Plant, in addition to lighting projects at seven (7) NJAW sites. Annual energy savings for combined projects included 1,296,984.00 kWh annually. For all 2017 projects, a total max incentive of $675,008.92 was available, of which Edison Energy received $428,004.88 in incentive funding.

Lift optimizations and epoxy coatings at the Raritan Millsone Water Treatment Plant and the Delran Water Treatment Plant. Project results included annual savings of 862,622 kWh. The max incentive available was $646,855.94, of which Edison Energy received $284,665.33.
