The Heartbeat of Edina: Navigating the New Era of the EABC

Dear Sting Locker Fans: For decades, the Edina Athletic Booster Club (EABC) has been the heartbeat of Hornet athletics, making the popcorn, funding crucial “Good to Great” initiatives, and cheering the loudest from the stands and in our neighborhoods. As we look ahead to the 2026-27 school year, we want to share an honest update with our community. The way people connect and volunteer has evolved, and the EABC is now at an important turning point where we need to rethink how we support our athletes.

Before 2020, “volunteerism” felt like a given. Post-pandemic, however, we’ve seen a fundamental shift in how people spend their time. While our stadium stands are packed on Friday nights, that energy hasn’t quite translated back into the operational “heavy lifting” required to keep the club humming.

The reality? We are currently facing a participation gap. We have the passion, but we are short on the personnel needed to sustain the gold standard of support our student-athletes deserve.

Nothing illustrates this challenge more clearly than our Annual Fundraiser. In a heartbreaking first since the pandemic, we did not have enough volunteer support or bandwidth to pull off the event in the 2025-26 school year. This fundraiser isn’t just a celebration; it is a vital pillar that feeds into our Scholar-Athlete Breakfast, Good to Great Coach grants, and special projects for athletics. When a cornerstone event like this falls through, it places an immense strain on our other revenue streams, like Concessions and memberships. The person power this past year went into working with the city of Edina to allow Charitable Gaming in Edina. While Charitable Gaming remains one of the EABC’s most significant accomplishments in decades, it is also our most complex and labor-intensive endeavor. Unlike a simple bake sale, managing pull-tabs and bingo requires navigating a thicket of state regulations, meticulous tax reporting, and constant oversight to remain in good standing with the Minnesota Gambling Control Board.

This responsibility falls heavily on our Treasurer and dedicated gaming managers, who must balance the books with razor-sharp precision while ensuring our partner sites are operating smoothly. In a postCOVID environment where hospitality staffing is lean and volunteer hours are scarce, the administrative burden of “keeping it legal” has become a mountain to climb. Without a full roster of leadership to share this regulatory load, we risk losing a primary funding source that pays for everything from new equipment to the very Scholar-Athlete Breakfast that celebrates our students’ hard work.

The EABC is a massive operation, think of it as a mid-sized business run entirely by people who aren’t getting paid. To keep the lights on, we need dedicated neighbors to step into vital roles:

•P RESIDENT & VP: The visionaries who steer the ship and coordinate with the High School athletic department.

• T REASURER & SECRETARY: The backbone of our compliance, ensuring our Charitable Gaming funds are handled with the precision the law (and our donors) expect.

• C OMMITTEE LEADS: From managing the Sting Locker Magazine to organizing the Hall of Fame inductions, to our Scholar-Athlete program, these roles allow us to celebrate our history while funding our future.

If you can’t donate time, Membership is your most powerful tool. It’s a direct investment in the equipment, safety gear, and opportunities that make Edina Athletics a premier program in the state.

We are proud of our Hornets. We are proud of our Hall of Fame legacy. But to maintain the Scholar-Athlete Breakfast and the robust support for every team from Alpine Skiing to Volleyball, we need a “re-engagement” movement.

Hello Edina Families, The Edina Athletic Booster Club (EABC) can sometimes feel like the best-kept secret in Edina High School sports. The purpose of this letter is to help get this “secret” out and to share a bit about the role we play in enhancing the experience for all EHS athletes.

As parents of high school athletes, it can sometimes feel like we’re always writing checks, and we may not always be clear on where the money is going. That’s why we believe it is important to share the three primary revenue sources for Edina High School athletics and the critical role of the EABC for EHS Athletes.

EACH TEAM AT EHS PRIMARILY RECEIVES FUNDS FROM THE THREE SOURCES LISTED BELOW: REGISTRATION FEES: These fees cover basic necessities like the salary of our head coaches, paying for officials, and covering MSHSL registration fees.

TEAM ASSESSMENTS: Assessments are often collected after the athlete makes the team to cover costs that go beyond the basics (e.g. apparel, team meals, assistant coaches, etc.)

EDINA ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB: The EABC supports all athletic programs in three primary ways: – Basic Needs: Every EHS team receives funds for basic equipment needs at the start of the season.

– Special Projects: The board funds special projects like the Scholar-Athlete Breakfast, Homecoming fireworks, and this magazine. The boosters also started and funded the Premier Sports Psychology partnership to support the mental health of all our athletes this year.

The booster’s primary sources of revenue are membership fees, events like the April 12th Winner Circle, concession sales, and sponsorships.

So whether you knew it before, or if this was a “secret” to you, the EABC is behind the scenes playing a critical role in the amazing experience our Hornet athletes enjoy. We encourage you to help us get the word out, become a member, or join the board.

Few players carry themselves with the calm, focused demeanor that exudes confidence yet never comes across as brash or self-important.

Chase Bjorgaard is one such student-athlete, and his resume ranks among the very best of Minnesota’s three-sport athletes of all time. He accomplished it in an era when specialization has become the way of life for young athletes.

Bjorgaard is a throwback and a grinder with a team-first mentality that made Edina High School proud, and one that gave the older generation, raised on three-sport expectations, a moment to reflect on where we’ve come and just how special his high school run was. Not since Joe Mauer graduated from Cretin-Derham Hall (2001) or Marion Barber III (2001) came out of Wayzata can one find a player in the big-school setting of the Metro Area who accomplished what Bjorgaard did across three sports at the high school level.

Three state tournaments in one year. That is unheard of.

The numbers alone read like a misprint. Ten varsity letters with four in baseball, three in football, three in hockey. Actually, make it eleven. Bjorgaard lettered in choir, too. He was a captain in all three sports and the one that stops you cold: nine section championships in ten possible seasons, with three state tournament appearances in a single school year as a senior.

“Three state tournaments in one year,” said Edina baseball coach Tom Nevers, himself a former multi-sport star and first-round Houston Astros draft pick. “That is unheard of.”

In a state that treasures its high school sports history like scripture, it is hard for even the old-timers, including the coaches and the men who lived it themselves, to come up with another name that touches it.

THE SIX-TOUCHDOWN KID If there was a single night that turned Chase Bjorgaard from Edina’s best-kept secret into statewide legend, it came in November at the Prep Bowl against Moorhead.

The backstory made it personal. The Spuds had beaten Edina in the state hockey tournament in 2025 with their fans chanting profanities about Edina in the arena and even taking it back to the team hotel, all of which is well documented on social media.

Then the Spuds beat the Hornets in football on a dreary night at Kuhlman Stadium to close out the 2025 season and once again chose to take the low road. With videos posted to social media of themselves dancing on the Hornet logo at midfield, they awoke Bjorgaard and his team giving them the focus to finish what they craved, a state football title.

“They disrespected us so much,” Bjorgaard said. “At least we felt like that as a community, as a team.”

There was more fueling him than revenge. As a sophomore in the 2023 state championship game, Bjorgaard was stopped at the one-yard line on a two-point conversion attempt to win the Prep Bowl. It was not to be as Edina and Bjorgaard came up agonizingly short. “It’s almost like I never wanted to feel that again,” he said.

“Everyone’s watching you. All the eyes are on you, big moment, and you come up short. It’s just a terrible feeling.”

So when the rematch came with a championship on the line with Moorhead, the Hornets’ plan was simple. “We knew we’d be able to run the ball on them,” Bjorgaard said. “I knew what I had to do, and then I went out and did it.”

Did he ever, and to the tune of six touchdowns, tying the state record he shares with five other players. Bjorgaard needed 257 yards in the Prep Bowl to break the school single-season EHS rushing record held by John Warpinski, and he blew past the mark by roughly a hundred. His father, Eric, remembers the coaches walking past each other at the team gathering the night before, murmuring “257” like a code word. Head coach Jason Potts told anyone who asked: “Oh, he’s going to get it.”

The arc mirrors his baseball story: 92 rushing yards as a sophomore call-up in 2023, 1,164 as a junior, 1,834 as a senior. Potts, who put a sophomore back on the field and trusted him, watched the return on that faith roughly double every year.

“His competitive edge is just unbelievable,” Potts said. “I felt a lot more confident going into that one than I did in 2023, just because there’s guys on this team like Chase that are not going to accept losing this game. They’re just not. You use the phrase gamer, and he defines it.”

What made Bjorgaard special as a running back went beyond the highlight runs. Potts marvels at the completeness, the vision, the toughness, the ability to shoulder 30-carry workloads and still hit ­­10 SUMMER 2026

the second level with the same burst in the fourth quarter as on the opening drive, which is special with that amount of carries. The official ledger tells you what that looked like over three varsity seasons: 548 carries, 3,090 rushing yards, 35 rushing touchdowns, at 5.64 yards a pop. As a senior alone he logged 332 carries for 1,834 yards and 24 scores over 13 games—and chipped in 30 receptions, 310 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns for good measure, pushing his total offense for the year to 2,190 yards.

“When he gets through the initial line of scrimmage, he’s gonna take it all the way,” Potts said. “As good as he was on his last carry was the same as his first carry.”

And then there was the ball security which was all but a guarantee with Bjorgaard. “There’s guys you work with a lot in practice on ball security,” Potts said. “What’s weird about Chase is he always had it. There was no concern of him getting tired, not being able to handle the workload, turning the ball over. It was just, how lucky are we to coach this guy?”

THE 0.001 PERCENT Here is where the Bjorgaard story leaves the realm of the merely impressive. Days after carrying a football team to a state championship, having not laced up a pair of skates in months, he strapped on the pads and stepped into the net for one of the most scrutinized hockey programs in America.

Think about what that asks of a body. A running back lives north-south. A goaltender lives east-west, where it matters most: in the hips and the groin and the explosive lateral push. There is no crossover training or easing in. There is just highly competitive Minnesota high school hockey and, moreover, Edina hockey, with an entire state that hates you, and a crease to defend.

making them pretty routine,” Harding said. “I’ve always believed you should coach to people’s strengths, and his strength is just being an athlete and the way he competes.”

The record he leaves in the crease is an impressive line: 42 varsity games, a 32-7-2 record, a .916 career save percentage, a 2.54 goals-against average and six shutouts. Even his injury-shortened junior year—14 games played around the hamstring—produced an impressive 11-1-1 record with a .929 save percentage and a 1.81 GAA. As a senior, handling the 28-game workload down the backstretch, he went 21-6-1 with four shutouts and backstopped the Hornets to the state semifinals.

Ask Harding what defined Bjorgaard’s time in the program, though, and he doesn’t start with saves.

“He bleeds green,” Harding said. “When you think of Chase Bjorgaard, you think of Edina whether it be football, whether it be hockey, whether it be baseball. He represented himself and the community and the team to a high standard and expected nothing less. In an era where loyalty and playing for something bigger than yourself has become a little bit of an issue all across sports, he took a lot of pride in wearing that Hornet.”

FIVE TOOLS AND A BO JACKSON ARM And then, when the ice came out, Bjorgaard picked up a bat.

Baseball is the sport his coaches, to a man, believe carries his future.

“If I have a better left fielder in my lifetime in high school baseball, I will be shocked,” said Nevers. “He kept more doubles to singles than any left fielder I’ve ever had. He can run, he can hit, he hits

“For anybody else, it would be very difficult,” said Edina coach Josh Harding, the former Minnesota Wild netminder. “For 99.999 percent of people, it would be very, very difficult to do what he does.

But he’s that 0.001 percent that makes it look easy.”

It wasn’t without cost. Bjorgaard tore his hamstring as a junior making the football-to-hockey transition. He had skated exactly once, at captains’ practice, between a Thursday state quarterfinal loss in football and Monday hockey tryouts. So his senior year, Harding, head coach Curt Giles, Chase and his dad sat down in the summer and built a plan: a month of patient ramp-up, trusting the horse for the backstretch.

“Just like any competitor, you want to be out there,” Harding said.

“But we all knew what the smart decision was.”

What Harding got when Bjorgaard was ready was something you can’t teach, and that is an athletic goaltender who competes. For Bjorgaard, it was body control and competitive fury, stealing goals that had already been counted. “I see way too many saves that any other goalie, I probably think aren’t possible, and he’s actually Edina Sting Locker 11

with power, he’s got a great arm, and he’s a great defender. He’s five tools.”

stepped off the big stage at Grand Casino Arena and delivered more thump.

Nevers still talks about a play at Eden Prairie. A dying fly ball down the left-field line saw Bjorgaard fading back, feet chopping, no time to plant. “He just Bo Jackson-armed it right to home plate,” Nevers said. “The guy was a dead duck. One of the best plays I’ve seen in high school baseball. It was belly high and it was a bullet.”

The remarkable part, Nevers insists, is how much runway remains.

By his math, a Minnesota three-sport kid arrives at college baseball thousands of at-bats behind the specialized recruits from warm-weather states. By no means is that a flaw in the Bjorgaard resume; instead, it shows a massive ceiling when all things are considered.

The numbers back every word of it. Over 81 varsity games, Bjorgaard hit .320 with a .922 OPS, piling up 74 hits, 14 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 62 RBI and 37 stolen bases while patrolling left field at a .982 career clip. But it’s the trajectory that tells the real story. As a sophomore, he hit .259 with no home runs.

As a junior, .321 with a .941 OPS. As a senior arriving, as always, weeks late off a hockey season he hit .359, slugged .620, and posted a 1.032 OPS with 33 RBI in 30 games. Each spring, he dusted his bat and glove off while the majority of high school baseball players were in cages year-round working out. Yet each spring, Bjorgaard

“His power came out this year, God dang, he hits some balls hard,” Nevers said. “He’s a D1 body right now. He just needs at-bats. I’ve told every single college coach: if you get him, he ain’t going to disappoint you, and his ceiling is very high because he’s played so little baseball. I would be shocked if he’s not at Kansas or somewhere.”

The senior surge, seven extra-base hits in 2024 becoming fourteen by 2026, the slugging percentage climbing 258 points in two years, is exactly what Nevers means. That’s a hitter figuring it out in real time, on a fraction of the reps.

Kansas is not a name pulled from a hat. Bjorgaard will play his college baseball at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, with his sights set squarely on the Jayhawks, where head coach

Dan Fitzgerald, an Edina guy whose brother Peter coached Bjorgaard back in Squirts, runs the program. “That’s where I’m trying to go after Iowa Central,” Bjorgaard said. “That’s my goal.”

Nevers, who knows exactly what Bjorgaard is walking into, offered him one last lesson on the way out the door: “In football, you had guys opening holes for you. In hockey, you had defensemen blocking shots in front of you. In baseball, you just have you. It’s the most individual sport that’s out there that’s on a team. And the sooner you realize what your game is, the sky’s the limit.”

THIEF RIVER ROOTS To understand where this came from, you have to go back to Thief River Falls, where Eric Bjorgaard was a captain in football, basketball and baseball. He is the youngest of four kids who all played everything, because in a small town, that’s just what you did.

The Bjorgaards moved to Edina in 2012, when Chase was in kindergarten. It had nothing to do with sports. “My wife wanted to be in the school district,” Eric said. “I had no idea what we were signing up for.”

What the family brought with them was a small-town sports ethic dropped into the middle of the specialization capital of Minnesota. When 7-year-old Chase announced he wanted to play hockey in Edina, where the sport can feel like a religion with year-round services, his dad laughed. “A Bjorgaard has never even owned skates,” Eric said. “It’s Edina, you’re seven, it’s already passed you by. You’re on your own.”

profession. “I think playing three sports keeps his body fresh,” Eric said. “You’re not getting constant abuse, because they’re all a little bit different.”

HUMBLE IS THE BRAND The nickname found him before the fame did. Go anywhere in Minnesota wearing Edina gear, Eric says, and someone will ask: Do you know the six-touchdown kid?

The six-touchdown kid, for his part, seems constitutionally incapable of acting like one. His parents joke that Chase talks to reporters more than he talks to them and that they routinely find out about his awards and interviews after the fact, if at all. His closest friends aren’t his teammates; they’re his elementary school buddies, running poker games in the basement and driveway basketball at the Bjorgaard home five nights a week.

He did it anyway. That was always the pattern. Eric tells a story from the t-ball years that explains everything: playing catch before practice, dad’s throw sails, catches Chase square in the nose. Blood streaming down his face, all over the glove. Eric starts packing up to take him home.

And when the games stop entirely, the most decorated three-sport athlete of his generation would just as soon be holding a fishing rod. “He loves fishing almost more than sports,” Eric said. “He has caught four sharks, a barracuda and a couple of muskies and made his own lures as a kid.” Chase is eyeing a tarpon, because of course the kid who chased down nine section titles in ten seasons keeps a trophy list for the water, too.

“He wiped his nose off and said, ‘What are you talking about, Dad? We got practice to go to.’”

The competitiveness was never installed; it was ingrained. Bad day at the plate at age 10? He’d disappear into the backyard and hit off a tee into a screen until it was fixed.

As Chase climbed through Edina’s youth ranks, the warnings from other parents started. You can’t play three sports here. There’s politics and positioning. You’ll miss the camps, the offseason training, the club seasons. As soon as you’re not good enough, the coaches will cut you loose. Eric never pushed back on the warnings.

He just put the choice where it belonged.

“I told Chase, you do what you want to do,” Eric said. “But I think it would be super cool for you to prove everybody wrong and play three sports all the way through.”

Everybody said it wasn’t a thing. It wasn’t possible. Not at a school this size.

“And he just went, ‘I’m just having fun. This is just what I do,’” Eric said. “I don’t think he ever did it to prove anybody right or wrong. He just liked all three.”

There may be a lesson buried in durability, too. In an age when youth athletes stack overuse injuries such as the stress fractures, the blown-out arms, the surgeries before a driver’s license, Bjorgaard’s medical file through six years of varsity pounding amounts to soft-tissue strains. He never broke a bone in any of the sports he played, nor did he suffer the overuse injuries that are common with specialization these days—just ask the medical ­­14 SUMMER 2026

an era when anything wearing the Hornet crest gets torched online, not a negative word among them.

After the Prep Bowl, the neighborhood kids wanted pictures. So Chase did a house-to-house tour, posing with the little ones, one driveway at a time.

That, more than any record, is the part he wants to last. Even Minnetonka sent an email to its own families citing Bjorgaard as the reason their hockey and baseball kids should come out for football.

“I’d like to be an example to the younger kids,” Bjorgaard said.

“Showing them that athletes can still be successful at the highest levels of high school sports without specializing in one thing, like a lot of parents and coaches are trying to make them do now. There’s a lot of different aspects to all sports. You should go explore them and have fun with it.”

THE STANDARD Nevers grew up idolizing a multi-sport star at EHS in Peter Hankinson and sees the same thing in Bjorgaard that Hankinson had: “A great quiet confidence, and it’s infectious. If Chase talks, people listen.”

Every coach interviewed for this story was asked, in one form or another, what they’ll miss most. None of them started with the athlete.

Potts will miss the pre-practice check-ins, the daily conversations, the journey of a group that lost a Prep Bowl and came back to win

one. Harding will miss the kid in the dressing room, the jokes, “just him being there.” Nevers will miss never having to think about who plays left field but mostly the kid who kept a very good team from taking itself for granted.

“He showed signs this year that—I don’t think he has any idea how special that was,” Nevers said. “Zero clue what he’s dealing with and what’s potentially ahead of him. And that’s the coolest thing about all of this.”

Asked how he wants his teammates to remember him, Bjorgaard didn’t reach for the records.

“As a leader. And a winner,” he said. “I was a captain in all three, but I wasn’t yelling at everyone. I was just making sure I was doing the right thing at all times, giving my best in every game. Even some baseball game an hour away on a Monday night when the energy could be a little lower. Doing my preparation the same as I would in the state tournament. That gives my teammates the confidence that I’ll be there for them.”

He was there. Nine times in ten seasons in more ways than one. The moment he says he’ll carry forever isn’t a stat line; it’s walking back across an empty U.S. Bank Stadium field after the championship, medal around his neck, taking his time getting to the tunnel. Taking it all in.

Edina should do the same. We may not see another one like him.

RECHARGE BY THE LAKE: WHY SUMMER IS A MENTAL SKILL Photo: StarTribune

As I wrote this, the Stanley Cup Playoffs were heating up (Go Wild!) and the NBA postseason was grinding through its second round (Go Wolves!). The teams still skating and balling at that point shared something that didn’t show up in the box score: being as intentional to focus on rest as they were performance.

The athletes who won in late May and June were rarely the ones who had been going day in, day out since last May and June. In addition to the physical, tactical, technical, and mental skills necessary to be at the top of their sports, to endure a season grind as long as the NHL and NBA, these athletes also learned how to recover, reset, and reflect across a long season.

That same lesson matters for you, Edina athletes — maybe even more — because summer is your version of the offseason break.

What you do (and don’t do) over the next few months will quietly shape how you show up in the fall, winter, and spring.

The Performance Trap of “More Is Better” When school lets out, the temptation is to stack training on top of training. Summer leagues, club teams, lifting, skills sessions, camps, AAU, 7-on-7. There is real value in building physical capacity over the summer. But there is a hidden cost when athletes go from a full school year of practice and games straight into a full summer of practice and games with no real downshift in between.

Sport psychology research is consistent on this point: athletes who don’t build genuine recovery into their year tend to plateau, get hurt, or burn out — often right when their senior season or championship moment arrives. The body and brain don’t separate “school sport” from “summer sport.” They just count the load.

Rest Isn’t the Opposite of Improvement — It Is Improvement Here is the part most athletes don’t hear enough: a lot of your improvement happens after the rep, not during it.

Neuroscience research on memory consolidation — much of it from sleep researchers like Matthew Walker at UC Berkeley — has shown that the brain replays and strengthens motor patterns during sleep and quiet rest. Studies on motor skill learning have repeatedly found that performance on a new skill often gets better after a night of sleep, even without any additional practice. That’s not magic. That’s the brain organizing what you taught it.

Educational psychologists have shown something similar with learning more broadly. When students space practice out and take time to reflect on what they learned, they retain more than when they cram. The same is true for athletes. The reps you took in February, March, and April are still being processed. If you give your nervous system room to sort through them, you’ll come back

sharper. If you bury it all under more reps without rest, the signal gets lost in the noise.

In other words: doing less, on purpose, can make you better.

Reflection: The Most Underrated Mental Skill Rest creates the space to improve. Reflection is what fills it.

Before you charge into next season, take an honest look back at this one. A few prompts to sit with—maybe at the end of the dock, maybe on the drive up north, maybe just on a walk: • What was the moment I felt most like myself as an athlete this year, and what conditions made it possible?

• What was my hardest moment, and what did it actually teach me—beyond “I need to work harder”?

• What is one mental skill (focus, confidence, composure under pressure, communication) that would change my game more than another rep would?

• What kind of teammate was I? What kind do I want to be?

These questions sound simple. They are not. The athletes who answer them honestly tend to grow faster than the ones who skip past reflection and rush into the next thing.

Use the Lake Minnesota gives us something most places don’t: a built-in recovery environment. Lakes. Long evenings. A cabin, a dock, a boat, a quiet morning before anyone else is up. That isn’t just scenery — it’s a tool.

Time on the water naturally encourages the kind of low-stimulation, slightly bored, slightly daydreamy state that researchers connect to

creativity, perspective, and emotional regulation. Your phone has worse reception. Your schedule loosens. Your nervous system finally gets a chance to drop out of “go” mode.

You don’t have to journal for an hour to get the benefit. Even fifteen minutes of staring at the water without a screen counts as training. It’s training your ability to be present, to settle, and to hear your own thoughts again — all skills that will show up on the field, court, ice, or course this fall.

A Simple Summer Plan You don’t need a twelve-week mental performance program.

Try this: • Pick a true off-stretch—even two week— where you intentionally don’t structure your athletic life. Sleep more than you think you should.

• Once a week, spend ten minutes reflecting on the school-year season just behind you. Write it down if you can. The page remembers better than your head does.

• When you do train, train with intention, not volume.

One focused hour beats three distracted ones.

• Protect the lake time. The cabin, the dock, the bonfire, the slow morning — those aren’t a break from being a competitor. They are part of how serious competitors get ready for what’s next.

The playoffs you’re watching this spring were earned back in October. The season you’ll have this fall is being earned right now, in how you rest, reflect, and recharge.

On June 14, 2025, the Edina Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse team defeated the Stillwater Ponies in the Class 6A state championship, attaining Edina’s first state title in boys’ lacrosse history. After a near perfect 18–1 record, 259 total goals, and a state win of 9–7, these Hornets left their lasting mark on the program. “[Winning state brought] incredible joy,” varsity head coach Andy Lee said. “Edina is such a competitive high school, so there’s a lot of expectations with that high standard of winning … It was an incredible feeling that’s really hard to describe besides pure joy.”

With this being their most recent visit to the state tournament since their first time attending in 2012, excitement was a key emotion as the view of the off season grew closer and clearer with each win. The 2025 team was filled with a majority of returning, older players that had experience alongside each other on the field.

Since then, 12 seniors from the roster have graduated, a majority from the offensive side of the ball. A transition like this brought its own set of problems. “[Rebuilding with younger players] has been a new challenge,” Lee said. “While we’ve had kids in the program that we’re aware of coming up, there’s a difference between varsity experience versus not, so it’s been an a djustment this year for us to get everybody prepared and revisit those standards and continue to teach and learn and grow these guys as we work.”

This season began with a bumpy start, as the team was still trying to develop a strategy on how to work together, but with good leadership and a dedication to winning, they worked hard on building camaraderie.

“Losing those offensive guys made way for a lot of new players to come in,” senior and team captain Beau Simonson said. “One thing [the graduates] did really well is they brought us together, so something we’re trying to work on is figuring out how to bring those younger guys together and be more of a close-knit team like last year.”

Last year’s key leaders, Drew Stocco, Eli Busse, and Cooper Anderson, had been playing lacrosse together since eighth and ninth grade, so they were familiar with the coaching staff and knew what to expect at the beginning of each season. Now, new senior captains Luke

Seamen, Dylan Dubuc, Beau Simonson, Mikey Sieve, and Wyatt Spindler have stepped into their cleats and taken on the role of bringing a new team together.

Lee said. “We’ve had a little bit of swapping in identity the last few years to this year, but it’s always a good thing to be tested and challenge each other in practice.”

“[The team] definitely had a change in dynamics,” Dubuc said. “With … a lot younger and newer guys with less experience, there’s been a lot of ups and downs this season. I’d definitely say still having a good group of captains and leaders on the team, we’re moving in the right direction.”

The team continues to be driven by holding teammates accountable, always working hard in practices and games, and the passion to earn another state win.

Their hard work in connecting the team has not gone unnoticed by the younger players on the team and has made a difference in the team environment.

“After these past few weeks, now that things have been going, we definitely have a good shot at making a run. I believe that our team can make it this year,” Dubuc said.

“All of our captains have a good sense of leadership, and they make sure they always push everyone to their best and never let anyone [fall] behind,” varsity sophomore defenseman Axel Hawes said.

After becoming state champions last year, an unspoken norm has fallen upon the team.

They want to win again.

“Winning state last year definitely created a new culture for us,” Simonson said.

“Obviously that slow start from the beginning of the season definitely hurt us, but as we reach the end of our season, the standard is winning the state championship, so that’s what we’re striving for.”

For this expectation to become real, the team has been putting in the work.

“I feel like people expect that we’re going to do it again, but we have to work for it. [Last year’s] team doesn’t mean anything now. We have to do it ourselves,” Hawes said.

As the team developed and began to click and work together, they ended their regular season with a 6–6 record, but they are now focused on preparing for sections.

“Although our record doesn’t reflect how good I would say we are, you could see our defensive presence is still one of the best in the state,” Edina Sting Locker 23

Hornets set the bar HIGHER

Edina High School’s track and field program has bred some impressive athletes over the years, and alum Maddie Dahlien is the most recent example. Although soccer was her main sport, Dahlien

came in second at the state championship for the 100, 200, and 400 meter as an EHS freshman, won first place for the 100, 200, and 400 as a junior, and swept the 200 meter and long jump events as a senior. She was named Star Tribune’s 2022 Female Athlete of the Year and went on to win bronze for the United States at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Dahlien now plays for the Seattle Reign FC. Another notable professional athlete that emerged from the program is Izzy Engle, a soccer player currently playing for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. She won the 4x400 meter relay state title as an EHS freshman and was named the 2024 TopDrawerSoccer National Freshman and 2025 Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year in college.

EHS is continuing this legacy of success in 2026 with a strong track and field program. Respectively ranked ninth and 10th in boys’ and girls’ track in the Class 3A True Team Track and Field state polls, the boys’ team is also ranked second, following Wayzata High School.

At the April 24 Hamline Elite Meet, both EHS boys’ and girls’ track and field athletes broke records: Sophomore Piper Utne, junior Jillian Miller, freshman Lainey Shea, and sophomore Eloise Thompson broke records in the 4x200 meter relay, and senior Noah Johnson broke Edina’s 100 meter record.

“It’s something I wasn’t sure I would be able to do here at my time in Edina, [and] definitely a goal since I started here,” Johnson said.

Boys’ Track and Field coach Matt Gabrielson has coached for 23 years, starting as an assistant coach for the University of St. Thomas track and field team before coming to Edina. According to him, the team was “elated” at Noah’s success.

“Noah treats everything like such a professional and I feel like he really deserved this,” Gabrielson said.

Girls’ Track and Field coach and AP Testing Coordinator Lynn Sosnowski has been coaching EHS athletes for 30 years. In high school, Sosnowski’s main events were the 4x8, the 4x4, the 800, and the 1600, while in college, they were the 4x8, 400 hurdles, and the 4x4.

The plan Sosnowski currently uses to push her athletes is the idea of failure. According to her, one needs to learn how to deal with wdisappointment and failure, and letting go of that fear when you step on the line is so liberating.

“It’s a part of success,” she said. “You have to fail. On the back of our shirts it says ‘Failure isn’t the opposite of success.’ Olympic champions lose more than they win.”

It all seems to play out—Utne, Shea, Miller, and Thompson broke the record for the 4x200 meter race that they set themselves the year prior.

Besides congratulations from their family and friends, the girls’ team got a cookie cake to celebrate beating their own record. “It was really

Johnson has been doing track and field since third grade. Although the 100 meter is his core event, he also does the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400 relays. Like many other athletes in track, Johnson played other sports before deciding to focus on track during his senior year.

“I played hockey and football all my life as well,” he said. “[During] the winter of 10th grade, I decided not to go for hockey again, and I trained for track with a private coach. My junior year was the last year I played football. I decided not to go forward with that after I got injured, and I figured track was something I wanted to pursue further.”

Although Johnson lost the race by 1/100th of a second, his peers and coaches were excited. He was disappointed in the moment, but by the

fun to celebrate with my teammates,” Utne said. “It was another big accomplishment, especially since it was at the Hamline Elite Meet, which is a lot of competition.”

It comes as no surprise that track and field is a pretty individualized sport, but Sosnowski tries to bring her team of 130 girls together by doing warm-ups together and having potlucks before big meets. They even had a few Taco Tuesdays!

“Fellowship over food, if you will,” Sosnowski said.

Advice that Sosnowski has for athletes that seem to keep failing is journaling. She says that journaling helps to recognize what happened, process it and then let go, so one can learn from it and move on.

Tennis Success SANTIAGO SANCHEZ’S

“I started playing tennis just by myself … and I just stuck with it because I really liked it,” junior Santiago Sanchez said. “It’s been with me for a while now, and it’s a part of me now.”

Growing up playing team sports such as basketball and soccer, Sanchez said that he enjoys tennis’s independent aspect. “It’s a sport where you’re out there by yourself, specifically in singles,” he said. “You have control of what you’re doing, and how the outcome is going to affect you. That’s something I’ve always wanted.”

Sanchez, one of Minnesota’s top tennis players, fell in love with tennis after going to a tennis camp about 10 years ago. This extensive experience is reflected in his scores and standings; at the beginning of this year’s tennis season, he was ranked fourth of Minnesota boys’ singles players in a May 11 Star Tribune Varsity report.

Although the sport is individual, sophomore Ethan Rothschild said that he became a better player while competing with Sanchez, who always has a positive attitude and keeps team spirits high by cheering others on. According to Rothschild, he remains very humble despite his many accomplishments and is not only a good teammate, but also a good friend.

According to the boys’ varsity head coach Gary Aasen, besides reading the court and executing plays, Sanchez is talented at hitting the ball harder and flatter than his opponents. “He’s always open to advice,” Aasen said. “He has a really good tennis IQ, so he can talk about a lot of different things. He knows what’s going on out there.”

“He opened up my eyes to high-quality tennis and work ethic, and how to be committed to a sport and to play it at a high level,” Rothschild said.

Sanchez said that he feels grateful to get to compete on the Edina High School varsity tennis team, which is notoriously successful; the boys’ team has 25 state championships, and the girls’ team holds 37.

“It’s a privilege. Edina has, probably, the most outstanding record in state championships out of the whole state,” Sanchez said. “It’s the team you want to be proud of playing for, the team you want to compete for, the team you want to win for.”

Aasen also said Sanchez was a joy to have on the team. “He’s a good influence,” Aasen said. “He’s a sociable guy. He’s always upbeat.”

Sanchez’s tennis career has given him numerous scholarships, as well as the opportunity to travel around the country, such as a recent career opportunity trip to New York. Sanchez remains grateful for every opportunity that tennis has given him.

“My main accomplishments are just all the open doors I’ve gotten because of tennis,” he said.

2026 Coach Spotlight Still Dreaming.

Dave Jenson’s 40-Year Legacy with Edina Soccer

Dave Jensen // Edina Boys Soccer Coach There are coaches in Edina, and then there is Dave Jenson. Dave, as his players respectfully call him, has earned his spot on the Mount Rushmore of coaches in Edina. I sat down with Dave at Jerry’s Foods to talk about a career dedicated to the Edina community, the challenges and rewards of building up young men, and soccer. Lots of soccer. And within minutes of meeting Dave, I quickly saw the impact Dave has on our community as two people walked by and said “Go Hornets”!

Dave Jenson has been an integral part of soccer in the community since the Edina Soccer Association started in 1974 — and has served as head coach of Edina High School’s varsity boys soccer team for 40 years. In a community that puts a high standard on athletics, that kind of sustained commitment to a single program is something special.

Dave’s connection to Edina soccer goes back to the very beginning. He started coaching with ESA as a sophomore in high school, and was the ninth-grade boys’ soccer coach right after graduating from Edina high school. After attending Belmont Abbey in North Carolina and the University of St. Thomas — where he continued to play soccer — Dave returned to Edina, and in 1986 got the opportunity to lead the EHS team.

A Partnership with Billy leads to 5 State Championships and Over 500 Wins!

In September 2024, Jenson and longtime assistant coach Bill “Billy” Garner won their 500th game together — a milestone that puts them in a category few high school coaches ever reach. It is clear the impact Billy has on Dave and their relationship is built on trust, friendship, communication, and a love of the game. Billy brings the tough-as-nails offense, while Dave complements his leadership for the defense. Two different coaching styles, but one shared vision that every young man on the team “gets a voice” as Dave said. The dynamic duo made Minnesota State Soccer ­­28 SUMMER 2026

history together by coaching the Hornets to its third consecutive State AAA Championship in 2001, a feat never before accomplished. After coaching Edina Boys’ Soccer for 39 seasons together, they have achieved a record of 519-163-67. And the wins keep coming. On October 31, 2025, Dave and Billy led the Hornets to a 1-0 victory over Maple Grove in the Class AAA championship game at U.S.Bank Stadium — securing the program’s fifth state title. Dave said after the win “We like to chase stars, and they earned one today for the whole season. Their legacy will be with the school.”

A Coaching Philosophy Built on the Player

What sets Dave apart isn’t just the hardware. His coaching philosophy has always been: “We teach good principles and let the players coach themselves.” He views soccer as both a physical and mental sport — “Every player at the varsity level knows that when they leave training, their brain hurts because we make them think. Sport is life. If you can’t handle a morning practice at Kuhlman, you can’t handle your first job. Being a good teammate, high-level of compete, and mental toughness. We keep and stay together, fall down…sure. But, always get back up.”

That approach has clearly resonated with players across generations. Dave emphasizes reliability and openness, even insisting that players call him by his first name. “I don’t like to be called ‘Coach,’” he has said, “because I want us all to be on the same page. If something good, bad, or different happens, we’re all in it together.” Ryan McKay, EHS 1999, agrees. Ryan started as a Freshman and played for Dave and Billy from 1995-1999.

Ryan said “I always felt respected. Dave was clear, honest, and kind. If we made a mistake, he would let us know. His direct leadership came with clear expectations and made our team better.” Ryan, also proudly mentioned countless EHS graduates, friends, and teammates have given back to the community by coaching, volunteering, setting up scholarships,

and doing their best to carry on the life lessons given to them by Dave and Billy. Ryan summed the Dave and Billy experience well: “They build up young men to be prepared for life. Be kind, be humble, work hard and stay focused. Those guys define and help young men find their character.”

Dave’s tenure at Edina has allowed him to see the benefits of multi-sport athletes. He has spoken a number of times with hockey coaching legends Curt Giles and Willard Ikola about the physical and mental edge that all Edina athletes bring to the team. Dave mentioned that no stage seems to big for his multi-sport athletes and the coaches recognize a higher level of communication for the kids to buy into the program. “You wear Edina on your jersey, you have to bring extra every game. Every team wants to win, but teams that play against Edina are motivated to beat us and that game is circled on their schedule at the beginning of the year. We need to be sharp every game and leave the field proud to be a Hornet.”

More Than a Coach — A Community Pillar

Dave loves coaching in Edina, which he describes as a “infectious sense of winning. At home, in the class room, or on the field. There is just something in the water here”. Dave laughs, and quickly mentioned the support of parents, Athletic Director Troy Stein, Trainer Steve Tschida, John Sherman from the Sun Current, and even student managers who are spot-on for every sunrise practice with fresh bagels for the boys.

He put it simply, and perhaps best: “The kids come in and they dream.

And as long as they’re still dreaming, we’ll keep coaching.”

After 40 years, five state titles, and 500-plus wins, Dave Jenson is still here — still dreaming right alongside them. Edina is lucky to have him.

Edina High School is known for its collection of state championships, and the EHS golf program both started and finished the road to 200, as the EHS boys’ golf team claimed the first state championship title in 1954 and then went on to win the 200th in 2023.

And now, the 2026 season is looking good. On May 19, the boys’ team won the Lake Conference Championship, boasting 4-under-par rounds, with an average across the team of 77.15 on an 18-hole course. That is 17% lower than the average score of 93 for males, according to the National Golf Foundation. Accordingly, they are optimistic about their chances at the state tournament.

“We have to get past sectionals; there’s some good competition… in there,” Varsity Boys’ Golf Head Coach Tim Vernon said, “but if we play the way that we know we can play, then we have a very good chance.”

The girls’ team placed third at the Lake Conference Championship and are also feeling fairly confident.

“We’ve shot one of our lowest scores this year, so that was awesome to ­­30 SUMMER 2026

see,” Varsity Girls’ Golf Head Coach Kari Opatz said. “Sections are approaching next week, and we have a good chance to go to state as a team, so we’re really excited for this opportunity.”

For the boys’ team, their captain sets them apart: senior Sander Ohe. Ohe has been playing golf for the past five years and is ranked ninth in the state. Originally following in the footsteps of his older brother, he started on the junior varsity team in eighth grade and progressed to being a multi-year varsity captain and top player on the team.

As captain, Ohe has proven that one has to love what they do in order to succeed. “I enjoy leading the team,” he said. “It’s just a lot of fun to get a good group of guys and try to work towards the goal together. I’ve learned a lot from past captains when I was younger, and I’ve always been a bit attracted to being able to lead a team and the responsibilities

that come with it. I think that a team’s going to have success if you have good captains that are going to push you and help you improve but also [have] team chemistry.”

12 championships since their first title in 1983, but the girls haven’t gone to state as a team since holding the title of state champions from 2015–2018. This year, Opatz says the odds are looking pretty good.

For the girls, friendship is a core aspect of their team, and they’ve built it throughout countless hours together at practices and meets. Freshman Aline Tomaz said her friends were one of the key reasons she decided to join the golf team in the first place.

“The past couple years we have had two or three individuals go to state every year, but this year, we’re really hoping to go as a team because we have a lot of really strong talent,” she said.

“The girls are so much fun… they get along so well, and the team chemistry that they have is really great,” Opatz said. “They’re best friends … that’s something that I admire a lot about them because they’re always fun and able to put a smile on my face every single day.”

The boys have to beat out Benilde-St. Margaret’s and the girls have to outperform Wayzata at sections before either can continue on to state. While these opposing teams will certainly pose challenges, Edina undoubtedly has the means to persevere for its 216th and 217th state titles.

While friendship is of significant importance to the team, something else is also important: winning. The EHS girls’ golf team has won Edina Sting Locker 31

Triple Net Threat: How Kathryn Ewers earned the Athena Award

Kathryn Ewers // EHS Senior For senior Kathryn Ewers, tennis started as a fun side hobby with her mom. Her mother, Kristen, had played tennis as a college sport and encouraged Kathryn to play it.

“We would go out and play tennis … It was a nice way [for the] two of us to connect on the tennis court,” Kristen said.

While tennis began as a low-commitment summer activity for Kathryn, when she reached high school, she decided to try out for the tennis team. “It was just something fun that I got to do with my mom, and then in high school, I played competitively and went up [through] the levels,” she said.

Throughout Kathryn’s time on the Edina High School team, tennis brought her new connections and growth. She formed prominent core memories from traveling with teammates to tournaments and developed skills such as hard work and patience.

“She’d cheer people on all the time when [we were] playing tennis matches,” Loucks said. “She [was a] really encouraging teammate.”

When the leaves frosted over, Kathryn traded her racket in for a hockey stick. For Kathryn, hockey was a way to spend time with friends and travel to new places, a favorite being Duluth.

“I’m still best friends with all of the girls who I’ve grown up playing hockey with, and there’s so many memories that I could [think of]: just going down the pond and skating on the [ice],” she said.

Kathryn’s hockey career began at six years old. Every winter, her dad would build the family an ice rink, which became the primary reason behind her participation in the sport. In her childhood, she would also go to Arden Park and play hockey with her brother and dad there.

“In hockey and lacrosse, you can take your anger out, but [in tennis], you have to learn how to stay composed, so it definitely helped me learn about keeping my composure,” Kathryn said.

Eventually, Kathryn started to play hockey for Edina Hockey Association. She nearly quit hockey due to a foot injury that required surgery, but decided to stick with it. It had become a big part of her life, shaping her perseverance and resilience.

Kathryn’s strong presence on the tennis team helped with her teammates’ technical skills while also inspiring them as well.

According to freshman Bella Loucks, Kathryn always had a positive attitude.

“I’ve done [hockey] all my life, and I really just felt like I didn’t know how to live without doing it,” she said. “I felt as if the past [11] years had kind of been for nothing. I’d already been in the program, so why not just do the next two years?”

According to Kristen, Kathryn was always hesitant to quit any of her sports as they were all very important to her. “When she was younger, maybe a sophomore or junior, I said, ‘Are you sure you want to keep playing all of these sports?’” Kristen said. “And she, without hesitation, [said], ‘Absolutely I love doing this, and it’s so important to me.’”

Perhaps the most impactful sport Kathryn played during high school was lacrosse. She immediately fell in love with the sport when she picked up her stick for the first time, partly because while her love for tennis and hockey was somewhat driven by her parents, the drive for lacrosse was inspired by Kathryn herself.

“My dad played hockey, [and] my mom played tennis, so this was like my own path, and I really enjoyed that. They never pushed me to do anything that I didn’t want to do,” Kathryn said. “The most helpful thing was them just being super open-minded with me choosing a different path that wasn’t their own.”

During high school, she faced different hardships on the field, including her foot injury sophomore year. “[During her foot injury], she wasn’t able to participate in some lacrosse tournaments where there was a lot of college recruiting happening,” Kristin said. “That was a real challenge, and we really had to support her through that… It’s hard to see your child in a stressful situation. As a parent, I learned that all I could do was listen and be there in the best way possible.”

Jackson McGrath: Dedicated to success

Jackson McGrath // EHS Senior Edina Boys’ Varsity Baseball Captain Jackson McGrath is reaching the close of his Edina High School baseball career, which he hopes will end with a state championship.

As both a corner infielder and a corner outfielder, McGrath has been playing on the EHS baseball team since his freshman year.

His sophomore year marked his varsity debut when he was pulled up for sections.

Despite the sport being his current priority, it hasn’t always been on top. McGrath played T-ball when he was younger, along with a multitude of other sports. He then stopped playing for several years before rejoining in seventh grade, and baseball officially became his passion.

During McGrath’s junior year—his first official year on varsity—his baseball statistics were at the top of the leaderboard for his team.

His batting average was .320, and he had 12 runs, and 16 runs batted in. Defensively, he had 78 putouts. Although he was a junior on a team where nine out of the 19 players were seniors, his statistics and skills put him in the top three on the team. That same year, they would go on to win the Section 6AAAA championships, but their run would end in state quarterfinals against Farmington.

one of three captains. “[McGrath] has been an amazing captain for us as a senior this year.

Even before he was an official captain last year, he did a great job of being a leader.” Assistant Varsity Coach Darin Mastroianni said.

Mastroianni said McGrath embodies the role of a captain through consistently being on time, being vocal, and assisting in making sure the team is doing things correctly when expected of them.

“He takes the younger kids who are newer to playing varsity baseball under his wing,” Mastroianni said. “He makes sure that they are comfortable and know that they are cared for and supported even if they make a mistake.”

McGrath has befriended his teammates for several years, whether it’s through sports or school. However, this means McGrath must also prove he can have fun with his friends while also being serious and dedicated to succeed.

“He’s really on top of us, and he’s pretty intense when he wants everyone to succeed,” McGrath’s co-captain Owen Meyer said. “He can get fired up, but that’s just how he shows his competitiveness and how much he wants his teammates and his team to do well.”

As for this season, McGrath has had a batting average of .293, 13 runs, 40 putouts, and one home run. His batting average thus far

is lower than last year, although that hasn’t stopped him from continuously contributing to the team.

“If you look at his numbers this year, they’re probably not what he would have expected, but he has been the unluckiest hitter I have seen in a long time,” Mastroianni said.

For McGrath, this season has taught him many lessons, especially on how to win the mental game.

“Baseball’s a hard sport, and it can be mentally draining if you live and die by the results,” McGrath said. “Taking things day by day and working on having a good process is something I’ve been learning a lot.”

With hard work and persistence, McGrath believes the baseball team can get a lot closer to the goal of winning the state while also focusing on the little things. After a close call last year, it’s not unrealistic, as they currently hold a record of 15–6.

Not only has McGrath hustled while on the EHS team, but he has also been playing for a club known as MASH Baseball for three years, which starts in early June and continues throughout the winter.

“All the good players who play high school ball who are looking to get recruited play club baseball instead of legion and have the chance to play in front of more coaches,” McGrath said.

Alongside this, he puts in work on his own to constantly be improving his game; at his level, baseball is an everyday affair.

“There’s really baseball every day, whether it’s a game, a practice, working out on his own, going to hit on his own,” McGrath’s mother, Erin, said. “He practices a lot. He does a lot of work on his own as well.”

McGrath’s dedicated intensity hasn’t been put towards anything, as he is committed to Iowa Western Community College to continue baseball at the NJCAA Division I level.

“For sure, since seventh grade [playing in college] has been something I’ve wanted to do,” McGrath said. “Baseball is my sport.”

While McGrath’s initial recruiting process was slow, and he hadn’t spoken with many schools, his opportunity came when he was offered a spot on IWCC’s team while attending a camp. For athletes such as McGrath, this step to an NJCAA Division I school is a bridge to the NCAA Division I level. He most likely plans to play here for two years max before transferring to a new college.

“When the opportunity arises, then I’ll see what [college] is best for me,” McGrath said. He said his excitement for his new college chapter stems from being able to be “surrounded by winners” and people with the same goals.

As he wraps up his senior year of baseball with people he can call his brothers, he’s looking to simply embrace every day he has left before parting ways with EHS. That said, the challenge of leaving Edina baseball with a state championship is still on the horizon. McGrath and the team are ready to learn from last year and finish their 2025–26 season off as Class AAAA champions.

As the team prepares for sections and state, McGrath said he hopes to work on staying in the moment.

“Last year, it was always ‘What’s next?’ and ‘How are we gonna prepare for this?’ We talked about it today at practice,” McGrath said. “Just take the next step in front of you, and just live in the moment and have fun.”
