Italy’s excellence and great appeal

I

taly is a hard-working, highly productive country that exports much of its production. Italy is a wonderful country steeped in art and history and with wealth of natural beauty. Italy is famous around the world for its excellent food and wine, as well as for its stylish fashion. Italy is appreciated worldwide for its high-quality, beautifully designed, innovative products. These concepts can be summarised in just a few words: Costa Smeralda, Rome, Venice, the Colosseum, the

Leaning Tower of Pisa, Michelangelo and Leonardo, Prosecco, spaghetti, Prada, Bulgari, and Ferrari. Each word is different, yet connected to a common theme: Italy’s excellence and great appeal. That is the same theme behind FROMITALY: a magazine that brings Italy to the desks of the world’s major buyers and showcases some of its biggest names in a variety of industries; a magazine that provides each of you with the opportunity to come into contact with such a fascinating and attractive market. Good luck with your business! FROMITALY’s Editorial Team

“l

uck? Sure. Even Napoleon was said to prefer lucky generals to good generals.” Eugenio Montini smiles. He is the founder and pulsating heart of Mopita, a company based near Brescia, specializing in the manufacture and sale of kitchenware products that are entirely made in Italy. We have grown significantly in only three years, and are still growing. “This is also good fortune. I was able to capitalize the many years of experience in the market and a deep knowledge of the cookware field”. How is Mopita organized? Today we are a small but close group of people with specific skills. After having conceived the product’s functionality

and design, we purchase the raw materials needed; we then entrust the production of our items to highly specialized companies and give them custody of our moulds. We work as a big company, but with the advantages of being smaller, more flexible and better value. Mopita is a brand that seems tailored on its founder’s personality: creative but solid, visionary but firmly concrete, imaginative but aware. “Every day I give all myself to this pro-

ject. Moreover, together with the energy, enthusiasm and ideas, I demand of myself all the strictness I am capable of and I expect the same from all my coworkers.” What about Mopita’s future? “I’d like this brand to express beauty as a distinctive and pervasive value. And I’d like to make beauty available to everyone.”

Francesco Pensabene CE- The Trade Promotion office of the Italian Trade Commissioner Embassy in New Delhi has long played an important role in facilitating businesses and professionals in various fields including HoReCa and kitchen products. The Office operates mainly in two directions: 1. Promotional Activities - These are activities which are realized with the intent to develop bilateral collaborations between Indian and Italian companies, typically by participation in major exhibitions both in India and in Italy. These fair participations are either delegations of Indian operators to Italy in fairs such as HOMI, FURNITURE FAIR, and MacFrut among others, or collective participation of Italian companies, coordinated by ICE, in Indian fairs, such as AAHAR or the Food Hospitality. In essence, on the one hand ICE often works in collaboration with fair organizers or Italian associations to invite potential Indian buyers in Italy, while on the other it helps to reduce the cost of participation and facilitates the participation in fairs for Italian companies fairs in India. 2. Personalized Assistance - The ICE is a government body dedicated to customer orientation. The companies that are our customers, find a body ready to provide them with information and assistance on a daily basis. The Best Italian Districts

e italian industrial districts

by editorial staff

What is a district?

A

n industrial “district” is a socioeconomic system characterised by high concentrations of a number of independent companies specialising in similar or different stages of the same production process and located in a limited geographical area. There is both competition and supply chain collaboration among companies in the same district. In Italy, industrial districts have been officially recognised under Law. Manufactures of products of our interest (including items for retail, the HoReCa sector and professional equipment) are scattered throughout Italy, but many of them (about 25%) are concentrated in specific industrial districts. 66% of companies operate in foreign markets through agreements with local partners, while only 14% uses direct branches or foreign networks. The trend to enter into agreements with foreign Operators is rising sharply (more than 65% of manufacturers report that they want to increase their number). Industrial districts have a strong export-oriented vision; currently (2016), 50% of exports are to European countries, 22% to the Americas, 18% to Asia and 10% to the rest of the world. The Italian industrial districts concerning the home and gift market (table, kitchen, porcelain, glass, ceramics, furniture), are as follows:

T

he qualities that led to the success of this district lie in its particular technological specialisation and production strategy, combined with a strong spirit of innovation and attention to design. These elements are essential for the production of kitchen utensils and tableware (pots, cutlery, utensils, coffee makers, small appliances), which have marked the history of world design in the last century. Firms within this district are predominantly located in Omegna, Gravellona Toce, Casale Corte Cerro and Ornavasso. These four municipalities, and the adjacent area of Novara, comprise about 70% of the 200 companies with more than 1,650 workers, which in general have a strong propensity to export Italian products in the world.

T

he district of Lumezzane specialising in the production of household goods is located in the busy region of Lombardy, precisely in Trompia and Sabbia Valleys in the area of Brescia. C

olle Val d'Elsa is in the Tuscan hills, between Florence and Siena. It is called the “city of crystal” because the area produces 90% of the Italian crystal and 14% of the global crystal glass. Glasses, goblets, bottles, jugs, salt shakers, vases, centrepieces; these are the typical products made in the district, which was recently provided with a trademark of quality aimed at guaranteeing the material (crystal is only glass that contains a certain percentage of lead), the supply chain and the processing, which must take place within the municipality to bear the trademark.

Sesto Fiorentino ceramics

T

he Ceramic District of Sesto Fiorentino is located a few kilometers from Florence. The art of pottery in this area dates back at least to the eighteenth century, after the establishment of the first of all companies in the sector, Richard Ginori, which trained an entire generation of workers in this difficult art. The current production is mainly focused on gift items as well as table and furnishing accessories. The strength of the Sesto District is based on high-quality raw materials, strict production process control and excellent design.

A pride of “Made in Italy”, coral processing is an ancient tradition which is mainly rooted in Torre del Greco (Naples). This is the hometown of De Simone’s, one of the oldest and best-known families of jewellers that has mastered the ancient art of coral processing for as many as 170 years.

cknowledged in 2011 as Italian Historical Company and officially included in the relative Register created by Unioncamere, De Simone is established in Torre del Greco in 1855 and is still run by the same family of founders, now reaching the fourth generation. «This acknowledgement filled us with a great satisfaction as it was the consummation of different stories: first of all an extremely long family history,

characterised by our belonging to the territory with its traditions and peculiarities, and century-old ties with coral, pearls and cameos, requiring unique working skills and techniques, today as before passed down by expert artisans from generation to generation». Fiammetta De Simone is now running the company with her brothers Massimo and Michele jr. They can count on a continuous interaction and decisions are always shared, even though each of them is free to develop his/her own bent and interests within the company. Fiammetta mainly deals with communication, her brother Massimo is in charge of the sourcing of raw materials, while Michele manages foreign markets. The sense of family and tradition is alive and very strong. After all, the The “M. fu F. De Simone & C.ompy” stand at the Toy & Fancy Goods Fair. history of De Simone is really fascinating. Tracing it back means bringing back to life the great events of the nineteenth and twentieth century we are used to reading in school books, the Crimean war, the Union of Italy, the pioneer journeys of Italian entrepreneurs to America at the beginning of the century, WWI, the Spanish flu, Wall Street, WWII, the economic boom, to today’s globalisation. Important events that have always intersected the activity of this artisan enterprise of Torre del Greco, founded as Francesco De Simone & Figlio based on the will of Francesco De Simone, and run with ability and farsightedness by his son Michele and his wife Raffaella Palomba, that in 1911 move to

New York to expand their turnover and consolidate the relationships with the companies based in the New Continent. The great American adventure is marked by evenings at the theatre, social engagements, Caruso's concerts and is made easy by the household appliances and domestic conveniences symbol of a wellbeing, inconceivable for Italy at the beginning of the century: however, the sigh for home and the family prevails and after three years the couple comes back to Torre del Greco where the company was being run by Vincenzo PaEngraved shell, Finding of lomba, Raffaella's father. Thanks to his business acumen the young man “discovers" and starts treating the Satsuma coral that, despite not being particularly precious, has a great success in Italy. Ring with Australian pearl, Tahiti pearl and diamonds. his work and, at the end of the conflict – on the eve of his return to Torre del Greco and of the planned wedding – he will be killed by the Spanish flu that is claiming millions of victims all over the world. In the meantime, Michele is going back and forth between Torre del Greco and London, but the hostilities arisen between the two countries – signs of the forthcoming, devastating War that will soon destroy Europe – also impact on the trade activities, with heavy restrictions on the quantities of materials that can be sent to Italy. Therefore Michele contrives to send to all the family members tiny packets of coral that every day donna Raffaella, remained in Torre del Greco to run both the company and the family, must pick up to select the raw coral and make it ready for the artisan the following morning to be worked. Among manifold difficulties, in 1920 Michele opens an office in

London expanding the activity, starting to treat shells, pearls, tortoise and mother of pearl beside coral. The artisans of Torre del Greco skilfully work the tortoise turning shells into delicate cameos for American and European markets. In 1924 the company, renamed "Michele fu Francesco De Simone & Company", after Bartolomeo’s death, successfully attends the first industry exhibition organised in London and, driven by the success and the remarkable gains of that period, Michele and Raffaella engage in the building of a villa in Torre del Greco a luxurious house with six flats equipped with the most modern conveniences. Wall Street Black Thursday and the beginning of the Great Depression put at risk all the family possessions, from the luxurious building, not yet completed by the company, to the whole wealth they accumulated. Raffaella is obliged to sell her jewels, namely a precious brooch made with the purest diamonds, a gift from Michele before their wedding, managing to save both the company and the villa. Ten years pass and just before the outbreak of the war between Italy and England, Michele must flee London, hastily leaving the office in Chancery Lane in Hatton Gardon. The years of the Second World War are marked by deaths and sacrifices, along with the obvious complete decline of every business activity. Only after the Allies landing some signs of recovery can be seen. It is the period of the so-called "cascettari", collecting in small boxes cameos and corals left in the stores to sell them on the street to American soldiers: life and trades slowly get back to normal. However, the air strikes on London did not spare the office of Hatton Garden and only after a long time – and the intercession of the

Jewish jeweller Friedline that speaks for the Italian entrepreneur – Michele obtains a compensation with which it injects new lifeblood in Michele De Simone & Company that, in the post-war period, wins a strong position as a qualified import-export company of corals, cameos and tortoise. At Michele’s death in 1963, his son Antonio, assuming the reins of the company, launches on the English market, which seems to highly appreciate shell engravings, the "famous ladies" line, with the reproductions of the paintings of great nineteenth century artists. The roaring success has a positive impact on the work generating wealth for the artisans of Torre del Greco. Michele De Simone & Company is up-front also in the seventies, when, in America, celebri-

Once this fashion has faded, Antonio turns once again to Eastern areas to purchase coral and cultivated pearls and re-establish the trades with Japan and China. The nineties are marked by the current generation joining the company and De Simone Fratelli is established, obliged to cope with all the challenges of globalisation and of a complex international situation. «We aim at “modernising” the image of such a classic product as coral, making it the protagonist of modern jewels, embellished by high quality gems, able to combine traditional working techniques and contemporary shapes and matchings. After all, coral is an extraordinary material and we use every variety, from the Mediterranean, to the Peau d’Ange to the Japanese one – Fiammetta De Simone explains, and our handmade jewels are highly appreciated on Asian markets». The acknowledgement as historical company has been for Fiammetta, Michele and Massimo a moment of overwhelming happiness. «My grandfather witnessed and took part to extraordinary events building the company archive above all to preserve the memory of these events for our family. However, also in this work he showed all his farsightedness as very few companies can seriously document and certify such a great number of events as ours».

Not only high-level cuisine. Mudec offers the opportunity to explore one of Milan’s most important museums, a multidisciplinary centre dedicated to different cultures. Don’t miss out! Alberto P. Schieppati

A

big move to Milan. Spring 2016 has marked the beginning of a new phase in Enrico Bartolini's career; born in 1979, the two-star chef is embarking on a new project after 6 years of working at the Devero hotel in Cavenago di Brianza. “Ristorante Enrico Bartolini” (www.enricobartolini.net) has been in Milan since April 4th, on the third floor of Mudec, the Museum of Cultures on Via Tortona 56.

The Mudec represents a new approach to art in one of the most creative areas of the only truly international city in Italy. The location is extremely refined: ten large round tables, well spaced out in a very elegant room, with light-coloured walls and warm wooden floors. The Chef hired the whole kitchen brigade and part of the staff he had been working with for years: first and foremost, Remo Capitaneo, a great professional, the long-time sous-chef with whom Enrico has always got along very well, and Sebastien Ferrara, a highly experienced restaurant manager (his resume includes an experience at Mistral, the Michelin-starred restaurant of Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, with Chef Ettore Bocchia), in the team since September 2015. The restaurant's menu is a journey through haute cuisine, including dishes created for the Devero hotel, the "Be Contemporary" tasting menus (with 6 tastings) and "I Classici", a number of great classics: from Buttonshaped fresh pasta with oil and lime filling served with cacciucco fish sauce and grilled octopus, Risotto with beetroot and gorgonzola sauce, Veal cheek with potatoes in mustard seeds, crème brûlée with cherries, meringues and frosted blueberries, through to innovative dishes, revealing a deep knowledge of raw materials. 40 • omitaly 2016

But at the Mudec, in a uniquely elegant dining hall attended by a highly efficient, professional staff (including the great Ferrara, but also young Giacomo Morlacchi and all the others), the Chef is also going to launch a "light lunch" formula for € 45.00: Enrico picks a seasonal ingredient or a theme, and uses it to create three signature dishes. The Pastry Chef is Antonino Maresca. Bartolini's second innovation is the Casual restaurant, opened on March 31st in the Upper city centre of Bergamo. Enrico mainly aims to provide the city with a tailored solution, offering a brand-new formula designed for a wider target and simplifying the signature cuisine served at his flagship Mudec restaurant.

The Casual restaurant offers two tasting menus: a more "casual" one for € 45 and a 70-Euro menu including fish dishes. The wine list is characterised by wines that offer great value for money. The restaurant's architectural and decorative features, designed by architect Taurian from Tecnoarredamenti, reflects this vision of the Upper City, with an emphasis on natural materials: two large dining rooms, a smaller, more private room, and a terrace for spring and summer. Catellani&Smith was in charge of lighting and design. The Resident Chef will be Cristopher Carraro, a young talented chef that Enrico wanted by his side in this adventure, together with Marco Locatelli, former restaurant manager at Devero hotel. In addition, Enrico was recently authorised to run the Trattoria Toscana restaurant of the Andana Hotel in Castiglione della Pescaia, to be renamed "La Trattoria Enrico Bartolini", adding his own creative twist to traditional local dishes. In Tuscany, he hired Marco Ortolani as Resident Chef and Davide Macaluso as restaurant manager.

useo delle Culture (Museum of Cultures), or MUDEC, is the latest addition to the museum landscape of Milan. It is a centre dedicated to interdisciplinary research on the cultures of the world, and focuses on the relationship of these cultures with the city of Milan. The museum’s permanent collection gathers the collections from different Milanese government agencies, which are the result of donations made from the second half of the 19th century to the present day by missionaries, explorers, scholars and collectors, but also from less honourable sources like spoils of war and colonialism. The museum is designed by the British architect Sir David Chipperfield. VEBO FIERA SRL

T

he 2016 edition – the show’s 15th anniversary – has just ended, but the work to organise Vebo 2017 has already started. The International Exhibition of party favours, gifts and household items has once again proved to be Italy’s leading event in the industry, and has invited professionals to come back on October 6 to 9 next year. 2017/2018 collections will be presented on these dates as an exclusive preview, making the fair a unique event for manufacturers, distributors and retailers alike. A key B2B event, the show takes place at the Mostra d’Oltremare Exhibition Centre, on an area that covers more than 35,000 sq.m. divided into seven halls. The product sectors on display include party favours, gift items and furniture, bringing together the best of Italian craftsmanship and embodying Italy’s

manufacturing excellence. Prominent manufacturing districts include Murano glass from Veneto, porcelain from central Italy, lace from Tuscany, and last but not least Capodimonte porcelain from Campania. More than 250 manufacturers from almost all Italian regions participate in this 4-day exhibition, with more than 20thousand industry professionals attending the event every year. These numbers suggest the importance of the event, held annually in Naples, and determine the market impact of exhibitors. Vebo receives broad attention from both general and industry media; trade press has been a regular presence at the show for several years now, to be the first to preview and capture the latest innovations and trends of the Italian mar-

ket, but especially to show the quality of the Italian industry on many international publications. Every year, the Naples exhibition attracts a growing number of foreign buyers, who consider it a key international event for making purchases, on a par with Frankfurt and Paris.
