AL SUGHERO Un giovane brand con sede al Tarì realizza gioielli con gli scarti di lavorazione dei tappi, all'insegna del rispetto ambientale Pur trattandosi di un materiale povero, il sughero è stato spesso oggetto di sperimentazioni nel campo del design, della moda e anche del gioiello. Proprio intorno a questo materiale, infatti, è nato recentemente il brand Tappo's, creato dall'orafo Roberto Galeno Mellucci e dall'incastonatore Francesco Verolla. I due hanno dato vita a originali monili in argento e sughero, all'insegna del completo riutilizzo e della eco-sostenibilità: per realizzare i bijoux di Tappo's, infatti, vengono impiegati gli scarti della lavorazione dei tappi di sughero, tritati e riassemblati, evitando qualsiasi spreco e preservando le querce.

Despite being a poor material, cork has often been used for experimentations in the design, fashion and jewel fields. The new Tappo’s brand was recently created by the goldsmith Roberto Galeno Mellucci and by the setter Francesco Verolla just based on this material. The two designed original jewels made in silver and cork, aiming at a complete reuse and a natural transformation: In fact, to manufacture Tappo’s costume jewels, they use the working waste of corks, minced and reassembled, avoiding any waste and preserving oaks.

il blue moon da sotheby's Uno straordinario diamante blu di oltre 12 carati verrà battuto all'asta a novembre La casa d’aste Sotheby’s ha annunciato la presenza di un gioiello veramente straordinario all'asta Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels che si terrà a Ginevra il prossimo 11 novembre. Si tratta del Blue Moon Diamond (foto in basso), uno dei più grandi diamanti blu intenso conosciuti (12.03 carati), dal taglio a cuscino che ne esalta le qualità e classificato dal Gemological Institute of America (GIA) come Fancy Vivid Blue, ovvero con il grado di colore più intenso esistente tra i diamanti blu. La rarissima gemma, dichiarata internally flawless, è stata rinvenuta presso la miniera di Cullinan in Sud Africa. Il suo valore è stato stimato tra i 35 e i 55 milioni di dollari. The auction house Sotheby’s announced the presence of a particular jewel for the Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels auction that will be held in Geneva on 11th November. It is the Blue Moon Diamond, one of the biggest known deep blue diamonds (12,03 carats), characterised by a cushion cut exalting its quality and classified by the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) as Fancy Vivid Blue, that is with the most vivid colour grade existing among blue diamonds.

This very rare diamond, discovered in the South African mine of Cullinan, will be offered during the auction at an estimated value ranging between 35 and 55 million dollars.

Come sempre guardando al futuro, Arturo Facchini ha deciso di rinnovarsi creando un insolito astuccio: Artù, questo il suo nome, è un normale contenitore che viene però inserito all'interno di una struttura a forma di shopper. Bear, a forma di orsacchiotto e con inserti in floccato, è la versione per i bambini.

Arturo Facchini is an historic name in his field: the quality of the renowned company from Bologna, specialised in the manufacturing of packaging for jewels, started 107 years ago.

Years and years of studies led to a greater knowledge of materials and working techniques. However, looking ahead, Arturo Facchini has decided to renew by creating an unusual case. Artù, this is its name, is a regular box inserted within a structure with a shopper-bag shape, thus turning into a nice jewel case.

The version for children is called Bear because of its funny shape.

tiffany & co. premia flavia Flavia Pennetta, vincitrice degli US Open femminili, è stata premiata con un trofeo realizzato in argento massiccio da Tiffany & Co. E' dal 1987 che i maestri artigiani della maison americana realizzano queste ambite coppe, utilizzando antiche tecniche di lavorazione e impiegando anche più di cinque mesi per ottenere un solo oggetto. Ogni coppa, tra l'altro, reca l'incisione a mano del nome dell’evento, dell’anno in cui viene conquistato e del nome del vincitore.

UN'ONDA DI BLU per brillare

Uno spazio privilegiato, nella gioielleria di ogni stagione, è sempre riservato al mondo acquatico. Nei mesi a venire infatti le profondità del mare diventano indossabili e gli orecchini si tingono dei diversi riflessi della luce sulle onde, dai blu più scuri e profondi a quelli più accesi e brillanti, con qualche sfumatura di verde che trasforma il blu oltremare in ottanio. Topazio, tanzanite e lapislazzuli sono quindi tra le pietre più attuali, diffondendo una luce blu che bagna anche le passerelle di Ermanno Scervino nei toni del blu oltremare, macchiandosi invece di verde negli abiti e nei cappotti di Versace e Blumarine. The aquatic world has always had a privileged place in the jewellery of every season. In fact, in the following months, sea depths will become wearable and earrings will take on the hues of the different reflections of light on the waves, ranging from the darkest and deepest to the brightest and most brilliant ones, with some green shades turning ultramarine blue into teal. Topaz, tanzanite and lapis lazuli are, then, the most topical stones, shedding a blue light that invades also the fashion shows by Ermanno Scervino with ultramarine blue shades, taking on touches of green in the clothes and coats by Versace and Blumarine.

La Copenhagen degli anni '20 fa da sfondo alla vicenda del primo transessuale della storia, Einar Wegener, divenuto poi Lili Elbe grazie a un intervento chirurgico di riassegnazione sessuale. È una storia d'amore e amicizia che ruota attorno al conflitto interiore generato dalla consapevolezza di avere un corpo “sbagliato”. Il film di Tom Hooper è interessante anche per l’aspetto scenografico e dei costumi. La trasformazione del protagonista rappresentò infatti una rivoluzione ante litteram per quegli anni di abiti da cocktail e lunghe collane che vedevano solo l’inizio dell’emancipazione sessuale. Copenhagen in the twenties is the background of the life of the first transsexual in history, Einar Wegener, then Lili Elbe after undergoing a surgical operation for sex reassignment. It is a story of love and friendship revolving around an inner conflict generated by the awareness of being trapped in a «wrong» body. The film by Tom Hooper is also interesting for both set design and costumes. The transformation of Einar Wegener represented, in fact, a revolution ahead of his time for a period characterised by cocktail dresses and long necklaces that witnessed only the beginning of female emancipation. USCITA IN SALA: 14 SETTEMBRE 2015 Dopo più di quarant'anni torna al cinema Federico Fellini col suo Amarcord, restaurato dalla Cineteca di Bologna in collaborazione con il regista premio Oscar Giuseppe Tornatore.

La vicenda è ambientata in un borgo di Rimini intorno agli anni ’30, dove si muovono personaggi ordinari che grazie al talento cinematografico di Fellini diventano epici. Una figura chiave in questo teatrino di provincia è la greve ma sinuosa Gradisca che, con il suo atteggiamento generoso e i suoi fili di perle, rappresentava la proiezione delle fantasie erotiche adolescenziali di Fellini stesso. Le perle non sono un caso: in quegli anni infatti prendeva avvio la produzione e commercializzazione delle perle coltivate, che poco alla volta invasero il mercato sostituendo le rarissime perle naturali e riscontrando un grandissimo successo.

After over forty years Federico Fellini and his Amarcord come back to us, restored by the Cineteca di Bologna in partnership with Giuseppe Tornatore, Academy Award winner for best director. The story is set in a village near Rimini in the thirties, where ordinary characters are presented and made epic by Fellini’s directing talent. A key figure in this small provincial stage is the sinuous Gradisca, who, with her generous behaviour and her strands of pearls, represented the projection of Fellini’s adolescent erotic imagination. Pearls are not used by chance: in fact, in those years the production and trading of cultivated pearls started, invading, little by little, the market to replace the extremely rare natural pearls with a huge success.

Francofonia: l'arte minacciata dalla guerra USCITA IN SALA: PROSSIMAMENTE

Uno dei film più attesi e apprezzati a Venezia. Il regista russo Alexander Sokurov ha scelto di parlare di arte e storia in questo ritratto del mondo durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Ambientato al Musée du Louvre di Parigi, che diventa anche protagonista dell’intreccio, il film racconta la storia delle opere d'arte in esso conservate, la cui salvezza dipenderà da due uomini: il tedesco Metternich e il francese Jaujard, direttore del museo. Poche ma significative le concessioni ai gioielli in quegli anni: nel periodo bellico le donne indossavano, sui loro tailleur austeri, spille dalle fogge vistose. I motivi predominanti erano ora naturalistici, con uccelli esotici, animali e bouquet di fiori, ora astratti e asimmetrici, seguendo le tendenze dell’arte contemporanea.

It was one of the most awaited and appreciated film at the Venice International Film Festival. The Russian director Alexander Sokurov decided to deal with art and history in this latest portrait of the world during WWII. Set in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, which also becomes a protagonist of the plot, the film tells the story of the works of art it hosts, whose preservation will rest on two men: the German Metternich and the French Jaujard, the Museum manager. It presents few though remarkable references to the jewels of those years: during the war period women wore showy brooches on their austere lady suits. The predominant patterns where either taken from nature, with exotic birds, animals and bouquets of flowers, or they were abstract and asymmetrical, following the aesthetic principles of contemporary art. l'Orafo 2015

Black Mass – L'ultimo gangster dei '70 USCITA IN SALA: 8 OTTOBRE 2015

Un Johnny Depp ingrassato e imbruttito, su richiesta del copione, presta il volto al protagonista James Joseph Bulger Jr., soprannominato Whitey, uno tra i piĂš violenti criminali di Boston degli anni '70. La storia delinea il profilo del pericoloso gangster che riesce addirittura a sfruttare l'FBI per fermare l'ascesa di una famiglia mafiosa rivale. Ancora una volta Depp entra nel ruolo del cattivo ma affascinante, mascherandosi con giubbotti di pelle, occhiali scuri e pistola in mano.

Immancabile al suo collo una collana con catena per completare il look da duro. Ma tra i bad boys di quegli anni non potevano mancare neanche i bracciali e le croci del macho metropolitano. As the script requested it, Johnny Depp became fat and ugly to play the role of James Joseph Bulger Jr., nicknamed Whitey, one among the most violent criminals in Boston in the seventies.

The story outlines the profile of the dangerous gangster who even manages to use FBI to stop the rise of a rival family belonging to Mafia. Once again Depp plays the bad though charming guy, disguised under leather jackets, dark glasses with a gun in his hand. A necklace and a chain are obviously used to make his bad boy look complete. However, the bracelets and crosses of urban tough guys were obviously worn by the bad boys of those years.

Oltre alla sua carriera in questo si ripercorre l'ascesa di Apple e la rivoluzione tecnologica che ne è seguita, influenzando la storia delle comunicazioni dagli anni '90 in poi. Reso famoso dal suo stile essenziale e semplice, anticipatore della tendenza normcore che abbandona ogni eccesso, ritroviamo anche nel film il fondatore di Apple con i suoi jeans a vita alta e il maglioncino dolcevita, rigorosamente monocolore. L'

arrivo al Lido in motoscafo dai canali di Venezia, l'accoglienza calorosa dei fan in attesa da ore, applausi, interviste, foto e autografi. Come sempre, ancora prima dei film, le vere protagoniste della Mostra del Cinema di Venezia sono le star che calcano il tappeto rosso. Questa 72esima edizione non si è fatta mancare nulla in quanto a volti noti (nazionali e internazionali), attese, sorprese e delusioni. Anche il forfait di Robert Pattinson e l'aspetto appesantito e poco curato di Johnny Depp sono passati in secondo piano rispetto allo splendore delle protagoniste femminili opportunamente ingioiellate. Famosissimi erano infatti i nomi dell'alta gioielleria che hanno sfilato a Venezia. A cominciare dai preziosi indossati dalla madrina della manifestazione, Elisa Sednaoui, che fin dall’inaugurazione ha sfoggiato gioielli Buccellati, brand di cui del resto è testimonial.

Da vinci L'azienda toscana Amin Luxury brevetta un taglio a 62 faccette ispirato agli studi di Leonardo sulla proporzione aurea, ottenendo una gemma eccezionalmente brillante

T

ra i tanti campi del sapere in cui Leonardo da Vinci si è cimentato c’è anche quello delle pietre preziose.

Che secondo il geniale fiorentino dovevano rispondere alla formula aurea delle proporzioni, per poter sprigionare il massimo della luminosità.

Per arrivare al taglio perfetto Leonardo aveva infatti realizzato alcuni disegni e alcuni di questi sono riprodotti nel volume De Divina Proporcione di Frà Luca Pacioli. Li ha visti il titolare dell’azienda fiorentina Amin Luxury, Babak Nasrollahi Moghaddam, che ha deciso di applicare le teorie di Leonardo al taglio del diamante.

Il risultato, ottenuto anche grazie alla tecnologia, è una forma a 62 faccette che aggiorna e migliora il taglio a brillante, che conta 57 faccette. Leonardo da Vinci Cut è il nome della novità che consente al diamante di brillare come una piccola stella, anche alla luce notturna: il Museo Leonardiano di Vinci ne ha ospitato il debutto ufficiale durante un evento organizzato da Amin Luxury.

Among the many fields of knowledge Leonardo da Vinci tried out we also find the one connected with precious gems. According to the ingenious man from Florence, they had to comply with the golden formula on proportions, to be able to emanate the utmost brightness. In fact, to obtain the perfect cut, Leonardo made some drawings and some of them are printed in the De Divina Proporcione book by Frà Luca Pacioli. Babak Nasrollahi Moghaddam, the owner of Amin Luxury, a company from Florence, saw them and decided to apply Leonardo’s theories to the cutting of diamonds. The result, also obtained thanks to technology, is a 62-facet shape updating and improving the 57-facet brilliant cut. L

a forma della bocca, oggetto del desiderio che ha sempre ispirato gli artisti per la morbidezza delle sue linee, è oggi particolarmente visitata e rivisitata dei gioiellieri. Se infatti ottant'anni fa le curve delle labbra di Mae West si sono trasformate in arte con Dalì e il suo Lips Sofa, oggi si trasformano in gioielli. Labbra preziose, quindi, che richiamano il surrealismo, nel caso dei gioielli di Mattioli e di Delfina Delettrez, ma anche il gusto e la buona tavola con le bocche di De Simone, esposte a Palazzo Morando di Milano nell'ambito della mostra "Gioielli di gusto". Non può mancare, poi, il richiamo alla bellezza femminile contemporanea e, in particolare nel caso di Roberto Demeglio, alle linee sinuose della bocca di Angelina Jolie.

The shape of the mouth, an object of desire that has always been inspiring artists for the softness of its lines, is nowadays highly interpreted and reinterpreted by jewellers. In fact, if eighty years ago the curves of Mae West's lips were turned into art by Dalì and his Lips Sofa, today they are transformed into jewels. Precious lips, then, recalling surrealism, as in the case of Mattiolo and Delfina Delettrez jewels, but also taste and good food in the lips by De Simone, now on display at the exhibition entitled "Gioielli di Gusto" held in Milan, in Palazzo Morando. We should not forget a reference to contemporary female beauty and in particular, as in the case of Roberto Demeglio, to the sinuous curves of Angelina Jolie’s mouth.

H

a definito la sua attività «simile al baule del teatrante, capace di contenere il necessario per la parte di chi lo indosserà». Giancarlo Montebello, noto designer di “ornamenti per il corpo” (piuttosto che di semplici gioielli), dopo essere stato un editore di successo di creazioni orafe d’artista, da anni segue un suo percorso concettuale autonomo. Con questa intervista abbiamo cercato di rovistare un po’ nel suo “baule”, anche per saperne di più sul mestiere del designer di oggi e di domani.

Ci incuriosisce capire come mai ha affermato che il suo lavoro consiste nella ricerca di una geografia del corpo. Cosa significa esattamente?

«L'espressione “geografia del corpo” è una mia licenza di vita e di progettista; altrimenti dovrei dire “anatomia”, ma ritengo questo termine troppo medico. Studio e vivo con attenzione la destinazione d’uso dei differenti gioielli, affinché siano al meglio per la parte di decorazione che devono giocare».

La forma e la sostanza sono al cuore dell’attività di ogni progettista. Lei come vive questo rapporto?

«Lo vivo bene dopo molti anni di pratica; la relazione del progettista deve essere di reciprocità tra le idee, la materia e le tecniche coinvolte per fonderle in un tutt’uno e conseguire pienamente quanto è stato visualizzato prima».

I suoi gioielli, più che essere status symbol, mirano a rappresentare chi li indossa. Esiste un leit motiv nella sua opera creativa? Quali forme ricorrono più spesso?

«Il segno dell’ellisse, che è il mio preferito in geometria, e le gemme in oro tagliate dal lapidario».

I suoi ornamenti talvolta danno l’idea di essere dei “lavori in corso". Da dove nasce questa passione per l’apparente “non-finito”?

«Ciò che è conchiuso, per me, perde di dinamica, un lavoro che non è del tutto conchiuso ha un divenire».

Sembra che le piaccia molto “giocare” con la materia e sperimentarla di continuo.

«Sì, la lavorazione manuale è importante, ma dipende dai modelli: può essere prevalente per alcuni pezzi e per altri minore, perché richiede una lavorazione meccanica. In ogni caso, sia dietro alle mani sia dietro a una macchina utensile, ci deve sempre essere una testa umana pensante e possibilmente con una vocazione, e poi i materiali con le loro sollecitazioni».

Che ruolo ha la cultura nel suo lavoro? In particolare, a quali estetiche si sente più affine? Aggiungo: Gian-

carlo Montebello ha avuto il privilegio di collaborare con artisti come Man Ray, Lucio Fontana, Piero Dorazio, Sonia Delaunay e molti altri. Cosa le hanno lasciato i grandi maestri? Oggi si sente lei stesso un maestro?

«La cultura è costruttiva della persona. Lo stimolo per formare nel tempo una cultura è essere assetati della curiosità di sapere, capire e potersi dare delle risposte, questo è il progetto della vita ed è per eccellenza “ lavoro in corso” perché “progredibile” e rielaborabile lungo tutta la propria esistenza. Tutto questo sarà oro immesso nel proprio lavoro sin dal principio. Questo è ciò che ho imparato dai grandi maestri ascoltandoli e guardandoli, leggendo e studiando molto, visitando mostre e musei tra i 18 e i 50 anni. Non sono un maestro perché ho ancora molto da imparare».

Ci spieghi il significato degli ornamenti che le sono più cari. Gli “Ornamenti per Bradamante”: “Forza Coraggio Delicatezza”.

«Sono frammenti in maglia d’acciaio inox da un abito dell’immaginario, per sentirmi simultaneamente di volta in volta antico, contemporaneo e futuribile; un’allegorica rappresentazione di donna segreta, una e trina: Bradamante è anche Angelica e Alcina nel contempo».

Qual è il ruolo del gioiello nella nostra società? «È di fatto un accessorio».

Lei ha anche ideato i cosiddetti gioielli per la casa.

«Per la casa ho realizzato un chiodo, per l’esattezza un chiodo da carpenteria in legno usato di norma dai muratori nei cantieri: un “chiodo appendi tutto” realizzato in oro da inserirsi nel muro di casa».

Le dà più soddisfazione che un suo gioiello sia esposto in un museo o che compaia al collo di una signora?

«Può anche accadere di avere “la moglie ubriaca e la botte piena”, come l’anno scorso in occasione della mostra alla Triennale Il Design Italiano Oltre la Crisi: ho potuto essere presente grazie al prestito della proprietaria che ha rinunciato per un anno a indossare una collana che portava con molta frequenza».

Come dovrà essere il designer orafo del domani?

«Ci sono di già accenni del tutto sperimentali, i designer forse dovranno essere anche dei matematici, conoscere le nanotecnologie, l’elettronica e il medicale, la fisica, i nuovi materiali con caratteristiche sorprendenti. Sarà certamente molto diverso da oggi».

on è la prima volta che Boucheron si ispira al suo storico rapporto privilegiato con la famiglia reale indiana, ma per l’ultima collezione di Haute Joaillerie presentata a Parigi la maison ha ottenuto anche il patrocinio di un vero principe esotico, ovvero Gaj Singh II, il Maharaja di Marwar - Jodhpur. La collezione è intitolata infatti Bleu de Jodhpur ed esplora in quattro capitoli lo splendore del lusso indiano reale e immaginario. L’aforisma che accompagna tutta la collezione è firmato da Marcel Proust: «Il vero viaggio di scoperta non consiste nella ricerca di nuovi orizzonti, ma nel vedere con nuovi occhi». Ed è con occhi nuovi rispetto al passato che Claire Choisne, art director della maison dopo essere stata per anni il braccio destro del visionario designer Lorenz Bäumer, si è accostata agli archivi custoditi in Place Vendôme da oltre 150 anni, dove sicuramente sono ancora gelosamente conservati i disegni realizzati nel 1928 per il Maharaja di Patiala. Questo leggendario committente di molti gioiellieri europei, infatti, si presentò alla boutique Boucheron con uno scrigno colmo di pietre preziosissime provenienti dal tesoro di famiglia, da montare e abbinare ad altre in monili che non potevano essere meno che meravigliosi: il tutto senza limiti di budget. Suggestioni di massimo, irraggiungibile lusso che si sono tradotte in quattro storie di lusso riservato, eventualmente, soltanto a pochissimi o pochissime.

Il primo capitolo della collezione, Jodhpur, è una interpretazione Art Déco della Città Blu, naturalmente declinata sulla profondità cromatica dello zaffiro, abbinato però, per l'Orafo 2015

suggerire la radiosità dei palazzi indiani, a un materiale inedito in gioielleria, il marmo Makrana, il più pregiato e costoso del mondo. Il pièce de résistance di questa serie è un collier reversibile che nel lato A è decorato da diamanti, cristallo di rocca e zaffiri, mentre nel lato B presenta gocce degradé intagliate nel marmo. Si passa poi alla magnificenza dei palazzi indiani, da quello di Nagaur, una città fortificata nel mezzo del deserto di Thar, a quello di Umad Bhawan, famoso per i suoi riflessi color ocra e arancio. La memoria degli antichi fasti che si celebravano in questi ambienti ha dato origine a una collana adatta a un Gran Moghul, costituita da multipli fili di perle con grande pendente centrale in cristallo di rocca e diamanti.

I dipinti di giardini del XVII secolo hanno invece offerto un florilegio di spunti per il collier Fiore di Loto, fulcro della sezione Garden & Cosmos, sviluppato sulla forma a punto interrogativo introdotta in gioielleria proprio da Boucheron nel 1889 in occasione dell’Esposizione Universale di Parigi: in questo caso il gioiello è arricchito da una serie di pavé degradé con rubelliti, zaffiri, diamanti e marmo Makrana su oro bianco e rosa.

Al culto della Maharani con le mani tatuate dall’henné è dedicato il quarto e ultimo capitolo della collezione di Alta Gioielleria. Gli arabeschi che le donne dipingono sulle mani sono chiamati anche “Mehndi”, ovvero il nome dato alla spilla in oro bianco e diamanti che si può appuntare sull’abito come un ricamo oppure indossare come collier. Vista nel suo complesso, la nuova serie di masterpiece firmati Boucheron offre un’idea precisa dell’oriental'Orafo 2015

The aphorism accompanying the whole collection is by Marcel Proust: «The real journey of discovery does not consist in the search for new horizons, but in seeing with new eyes». And it is with new eyes when compared to the past that Claire Choisne, the new maison art director after being the right-hand person of the visionary designer Lorenz Bäumer, approached the archives preserved in Place Vendôme for over 150 years, where she certainly found the drawings made in 1928 for the Maharaja of Patiala. In fact, this legendary buyer of many European jewels entered the Boucheron boutique with a casket full of very precious stones coming from the family treasure to be set and matched with others in jewels that could not be but outstanding: all this without budget limitations. Charms of an utmost unattainable luxury turned into four stories of contemporary luxury that, may be, is a privilege for very few men or women.

The first chapter of the collection, Jodhpur, is an Art Déco interpretation of the Blue City, obviously with the chromatic depth of sapphire, though matched to a new material in jewellery, Makrana marble, the most precious and expensive in the world. This to suggest the bright-

This is not the first time that Boucheron takes inspiration from its historical privileged relationship with the Indian Royal Family, but for its latest High Jewellery collection, presented in Paris, the maison also obtained the patronage of a true exotic prince, Gaj Singh II, the Maharaja of Marwar - Jodhpur. The pièce de résistance of this series is a reversible choker that, in its A side, is decorated with diamonds, rock crystal and sapphires, while in its B side degrading drops are carved in marble. We pass then to the magnificence of Indian Palaces, from Nagur, a fortified city in the middle of the Thar desert, to Umad Bhawan, famous for its ochre and orange reflections. The memory of ancient splendours celebrated in these magic places gave origin to a necklace fit for a Great Moghul, created with multiple pearl strands and a big central pendant made of rock crystal and diamonds.

The drawings of seventeenth century gardens offered a florilegium of hints for the choker named Lotus Flower, heart of the Garden & Cosmos section, developed on the question mark shape introduced in jewellery by Boucheron in 1889 during the Universal Exhibition in Paris: in this case the jewel is enriched with a number of degrading pavés with rubellites, sapphires, diamonds and Makrana marble on white and pink gold. The fourth and last chapter of the High Jewellery collection is dedicated to the cult of the Maharani with the hands covered by a henna tattoo. The arabesques that Indian women paint on their hands are also called “Mehndi”, and this is the name given to the brooch made in white gold and diamonds that can be pinned on the dress like an embroidery or worn as a choker. Seen as a whole, the new series of masterpieces by Boucheron offers a precise idea of Claire Choisne’s creative line: it's extremely precious and sometimes dramatic, but always very light, in the double meaning of this adjective, weightless and bright, even in very massive and colourful items.

The creative play present in every jewel on the shades of white, from diamonds to rock crystal, to the new marble, is always brilliant, even when the predominant feature is a coloured gem. l'Orafo 2015

isalire alla nascita della maison Vacheron Constantin significa spiccare un colossale balzo indietro nel tempo, saltando a piè pari Novecento e Ottocento per approdare nel bel mezzo del Settecento illuminista, coi suoi salotti letterari, l’Encyclopédie e le controversie filosofiche scaturite dal devastante terremoto di Lisbona. In quegli anni, tanto distanti dai nostri, precisamente nel 1755, un maestro orologiaio ginevrino di appena 24 anni, Jean-Marc Vacheron, assume il suo primo apprendista e va così a fondare quella che oggi è la Vacheron Constantin, la più antica manifattura orologiera al mondo con un’attività ininterrotta (di ben 260 anni!) dalla sua fondazione. Retta a partire dal 1785 da Abraham, figlio di Jean-Marc, la maison passa indenne attraverso i disordini della Rivoluzione Francese e nel 1790 realizza la prima complicazione nota una pendola da parete con indicazione dell’ora, del giorno della settimana e della data. Passata nelle mani del nipote di Jean-Marc, Jacques Barthélémi Vacheron, la manifattura inizia a produrre esemplari sempre più complicati che cominciano a essere esportati in Francia e in Italia. Nel 1819, in seguito alla collaborazione con l’uomo d’affari François Constantin, la maison si trasforma nella nuova società Vacheron Constantin, che ben presto comincia a espandersi oltreoceano, dapprima negli Stati Uniti - con la pioneristica apertura di un ufficio a New York - e poi in Brasile e a Cuba.

Tra le pietre miliari nella storia davvero eccezionale di questa manifattura va senz’altro annoverata l’invenzione del pantografo, che consente la produzione di movimenti perfettamente identici e intercambiabili, e che nel 1844 le vale l’assegnazione della medaglia d’oro “De la Rive” della Società delle Arti per “l’invenzione più utile dell’industria gil'Orafo 2015

nevrina”. Nel 1880 la Croce di Malta, simbolo di perfezione, viene adottata come logo della Manifattura. Il Novecento si apre con un altro passo fondamentale, il deposito del primo calibro recante il Punzone di Ginevra, istituito nel 1886 a tutela del savoir-faire dell’orologeria ginevrina e a tutt’oggi indiscusso e ambitissimo simbolo di eccellenza. Il prestigioso “Diplôme du Prestige de la France", che viene attribuito a Vacheron Constantin nel 1972, per la prima volta assegnato a una manifattura orologiera, suggella la grandezza di una maison che si è sempre distinta per il suo spirito innovativo, l'accuratezza dell'esecuzione, gli investimenti nella ricerca tecnica ed estetica.

Innumerevoli sono infatti i modelli Vacheron Constantin che hanno segnato la storia e il gusto dell’orologeria mondiale: esemplari veramente straordinari, dalla forma spesso innovativa per i tempi - tonneau, “Toledo”, quadrata; splendidi cronometri e cronografi da tasca, segnatempo ultra-piatti, smaltati, caratterizzati da grandi complicazioni e nuovi, sofisticatissimi calibri. Esemplari fin dall’inizio apprezzati, non a caso, da Case reali, teste coronate, Maharaja, uomini politici e d’affari, personalità del mondo dello spettacolo in ogni angolo del mondo: come l'orologio realizzato nel 1935 per re Farouk d'Egitto, uno degli orologi da tasca più complicati che siano mai stati realizzati, o il movimento più sottile del mondo, 1,64 mm di spessore, creato vent'anni dopo per festeggiare il bicentenario della fondazione.

Dal 1996 Vacheron Constantin fa parte del Gruppo Richemont: attualmente è presente in un'ottantina di Paesi, impiega oltre 1000 persone e possiede proprie boutique e una rete di selezionatissimi punti vendita in tutto il mondo.

"storico", a pochi passi dai primi laboratori della Tour de l'Ile, ospita una boutique e l'inestimabile patrimonio storico della manifattura; qui vengono spesso allestite anche mostre tematiche ed eventi culturali; a Plan-les-Ouates, alle porte di Ginevra, si trova la sede internazionale del brand e una manifattura di altissimo livello, con attività di produzione e assemblaggio; l'altro sito produttivo è situato nella Vallée de Joux ed è dedicato alla fabbricazione dei componenti e alla messa a punto di parte della decorazione dei movimenti. Consapevole della propria storia e ben intenzionata a preservare e tramandare le proprie competenze e i propri valori portanti, Vacheron Constantin dedica grande attenzione alla formazione degli apprendisti; inoltre, nel 2011 la Manifattura, che vanta sponsorizzazioni e collaborazioni con enti e istituzioni scientifiche e culturali nonché con istituti di formazione in tutto il mondo, ha creato un proprio Istituto per lo sviluppo del capitale umano e dei mestieri. Ha inoltre fondato l'Atelier Cabinotiers Creazioni Speciali, con un'equipe specificamente dedicata alla creazione di modelli unici e personalizzati, che anche nel nome riprende il concetto dei minuscoli laboratori cinquecenteschi animati da abilissimi artigiani, origine della grandezza orologiera di Ginevra, detti appunto "cabinets".

Oggi, per celebrare il 260° anniversario della fondazione, Vacheron Constantin ha lanciato i primi sette modelli della nuova collezione Harmony, che non ha mancato di riscuotere immediati consensi. Realizzati in edizione limitata, caratterizzati da una forma coussin e da un design ispirati a uno dei primi cronografi da polso lanciati dal marchio nel 1928, questi bellissimi modelli presentano una decorazione esclusiva del movimento, con un motivo originale ispirato agli arabeschi che ornano il ponte del più antico orologio da tasca realizzato da Jean-Marc Vacheron nel 1755. Un orgoglioso ritorno alle origini, che come sempre non manca di intercettare lo spirito contemporaneo. La storia futura di Vacheron Constantin, ci si può scommettere, riserverà altre splendide sorprese a tutti i collezionisti e appassionati di orologeria, in una inarrestabile ricerca di bellezza e perfezione.

Del resto, nel lontano 1819 François Constantin, in una lettera inviata da Torino, scriveva al socio Jacques Barthélémi Vacheron: «Fare meglio se è possibile, ed è sempre possibile». E diventato, ed è rimasto, il motto della Manifattura.

ramma e poesia, questa è la natura e anche l’essenza dei gioielli di Wallace Chan. Il primo gioielliere asiatico ad essere ammesso tra i noti creatori francesi di place Vendôme, invitato per ben due volte alla prestigiosa Biennale des Antiquaires nel 2012 e nel 2014, ha fatto talmente parlare di sé con le sue creazioni sovradimensionate da non stupire certamente con l’uscita di una lussuosa monografia. Edito da Rizzoli, Wallace Chan Dream Light Water, scritto dall’omonimo artista in collaborazione con Juliette de Rochefoucauld – accreditata storica del gioiello – mette in scena l’immaginario fantastico dell’estroso Chan attraverso una selezione di ottantasei opere. Ci sono il colore, la preziosità dei materiali, la fantasia fuori dagli schemi e i volumi esorbitanti di un artista cresciuto con la scultura e poi convertitosi alla gioielleria, ma c’è anche la tecnologia, un atout del'artista cinese.

Nel 1987 esordisce con il famoso e innovativo “Wallace cut”, una tecnica originale e brevettata di taglio delle gemme che unisce al cammeo medievale l’intaglio tradizionale, arrivando grazie alla tecnica 3D a una magica moltiplicazione quintupla di un motivo scultoreo con garantito effetto illusorio e ipnotico. Ma la sfida è continua: Wallace Chan infatti

usa pietre di grandi dimensioni come fossero castoni per realizzare le sue immaginifiche figure e inserirvi altre gemme, o arriva a trattare la giadeite in lamine talmente sottili da farla sembrare traslucida. Infine, ma solo per qualche stagione, Chan sperimenta un materiale tecnologico e leggero come il titanio, indagandone le possibilità estetiche e strutturali nei gioielli.

Nonostante questi aspetti sperimentali, il lavoro di Wallace Chan emana una grazia e una poesia che sensibilmente provengono dalla sua prossimità con la tradizione filosofica zen e dalla meditazione. Si tratta infatti di un lavoro ispirato, nel quale l’osservazione e la traduzione degli elementi naturali in oggetti preziosi serve a raggiungere una sorta di astrazione: farfalle, cicale o scorpioni animano un mondo di simboli, nel quale la scelta delle pietre non è casuale: la giada simbolo di prosperità e saggezza si smaterializza quasi per rappresentare il corpo e le ali della cicala, simbolo di immortalità per l’arte cinese. Wallace Chan ha stregato tutti e lo ha fatto con sapienza, narrando storie nelle quali il “sorriso del Buddha” si intreccia con gli strumenti della contemporaneità e del design. Un gioco di equilibrio cui gli artisti asiatici sono inclini e nel quale Wallace Chan è indiscusso maestro.

It shows colour, the preciousness of materials, the unconventional imagination and the exorbitant volumes of a Chinese artist grown up with sculpture and then turned jeweler, however complemented by technology as a strong point. and patented technique to cut gems combining the medieval cameo to the traditional carving, reaching, thanks to the 3D technique, a magical fivefold multiplication of a pattern with a guaranteed hypnotic and deceptive effect.

However, the challenge continues. Wallace Chan uses big size stones as they were bezels to realize his highly imaginative figures, or he works jadeite in such thin sheets to make it seem translucent. Finally, but for some seasons only, Chan experiments a more technologic material such as titanium, investigating its aesthetic and structural possibilities in jewels. Despite these experimental aspects, the work of Wallace Chan emanates a grace and a poetry that can not come but from his proximity with the philosophical tradition of Zen and meditation.

It is, in fact, an inspired work, where the observation and the translation of natural elements (realism) is needed to reach a sort of abstraction: butterflies, cicadas or scorpions animate a world made of symbols where the choice of stones is not casual: jade, the symbol of prosperity and wisdom rarefies to give life to the wings of the cicada, symbols of immortality in Chinese art. Wallace Chan bewitched everyone with wisdom, telling stories where the "smile of Buddha" combines with the tools of contemporaneity and design. A balancing act Asian artists tend to and that is undisputedly mastered by Wallace Chan.

a recente pubblicazione dell’Altagamma Luxury Monitor, con i primi dati del 2015, offre alcune rassicuranti indicazioni per le aziende italiane, confermando una crescita solida nel mercato del lusso, ma anche la necessità di rivedere strategie e approcci. quanto poco sappiamo di questa tipologia di clienti basta dire che oltre 100 milioni provengono dalla sola Cina e che erano quasi inesistenti pochi anni fa. Del resto oltre il 30% del mercato del lusso, nel 2015, è assorbito dai cinesi, ma più all’estero che a livello domestico. smartphone, amano colori accesi e acquistano beni di lusso non in boutique ma in scintillanti ed esclusivi centri commerciali. Uno dei dati più interessanti dello studio riguarda il fatto che la miglior performance del 2015 si prevede sia proprio quella dell’Europa, oscillante tra il 3% e il 5% e con risultati anche migliori se si esclude il mercato dell’Est Europeo e Russo. Anche in questo caso, la crescita è legata ai turisti stranieri e in particolare proprio ai Luxury Shopper attratti anche dalla svalutazione dell’Euro rispetto alle altre valute.

Il dato più interessante è che Milano, nel primo trimestre 2015, ha riconquistato la posizione di prima shopping destination al mondo, davanti a Parigi, New York o Tokyo. Tale dato dovrebbe essere confermato anche negli altri mesi, grazie a Expo 2015 e alla ricerca della qualità, 92

tagamma Luxury Monitor containing the first data for 2015 offers some reassuring information for Italian companies, confirming the steady growth in the luxury market, but also the need to rethink both strategies and approaches. In particular, we should make a distinction between those aspects connected to real economy and the competitiveness of Italian companies and the effects of currency fluctuation. The most important element to be underlined having a greater impact on strategic aspect, concerns the fact that the world luxury market is mainly conditioned by the so called "Luxury Shoppers" that account for over 50% of the total value to the public. Luxury Shoppers consists of 380 million people, mainly coming from Asia, USA and Middle East, spending thousand Euros every year in luxury products (jewels, accessories, experiential activities). In order to understand how little we know about this type of customers, it is enough to say that

Lo studio segnala risultati molto positivi per il Giappone, generati dalla svalutazione dello yen e anche in questo caso trainati dai flussi turistici, come dimostra il dato su Tokyo, prima shopping destination al mondo per i turisti cinesi. Per quanto riguarda l’Asia, è importante differenziare i singoli stati con performance migliori in Indonesia, Sud Korea e Thailandia, paesi molto attraenti per i turisti cinesi. Negativi, al contrario, i dati del mercato statunitense, penalizzato dal rafforzamento del dollaro sia sul fronte interno – i luxury shopper americani vengono in Europa per gli acquisti di abbigliamento, gioielli e accessori – sia su quello internazionale.

Per quanto riguarda i comparti, c’è una sostanziale stabilità: il 29% è rappresentato dagli accessori, il 25% dall’abbigliamento, il 22% dall’hard luxury e il 20% da cosmetica e profumi. Leggero decremento in termini reali per gli orologi anche a causa del forte apprezzamento del Franco Svizzero. Ora, i nodi centrali che le aziende del lusso devono affrontare non sono solamente legati al pricing ma a qualcosa di più strutturato e cruciale: il tema dell’internazionalizzazione del proprio brand e la riflessione sulla propria proposta di valore nei confronti di questo target di consumatori e clienti, che fanno ormai il mercato di oggi e a maggior ragione faranno quello di domani, sia nei paesi di origine sia quando vengono in Europa. Osservarli, capirne le motivazioni, parlarne la lingua, seguirli nelle loro fruizioni dei mezzi, spiegar loro storia e cultura delle nostre aziende è compito delle aziende che intendono raggiungere il target alto. Thanks to this long experience, Maryline has decided to launch her own line of jewels, called Maryline Gioielli. ncora una volta la Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, come ogni anno organizzata in Settembre da Ubm Asia nella metropoli asiatica, ha superato se stessa, con numeri da record: 3752 espositori da 50 Paesi e regioni, oltre 60 mila visitatori da tutto il mondo, 135 mila metri quadrati di superficie espositiva totale tra l'Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (Hkcec), dedicato alla gioielleria finita, e l'AsiaWorld-Expo, riservato a pietre, perle e macchinari. Numeri che sottolineano il carattere internazionale e cosmopolita di questa manifestazione vivace e affollata, caratterizzata da un'offerta espositiva praticamente infinita. Gli organizzatori hanno riproposto il consueto layout dei padiglioni, con l'aggiunta di un nuovo spazio interamente dedicato al settore bridal.

In generale la fiera è andata ragionevolmente bene, sia per gli espositori italiani sia per gli stranieri. Tra gli aspetti che in tanti sottolineano come positivi, il fatto che a Hong Kong si incontrano buyer che non visitano, di solito, le altre manifestazioni; che la fiera è immensa ma organizzata con estrema razionalità e dunque facilissima da visitare; che si vedono risultati dopo qualche anno di partecipazione, perché i compratori asiatici sono estremamente cauti e prediligono le presenze consolidate; che l'offerta di coralli, perle e gemme all'Awe (Asia World-Expo) è straordinaria; che visitare i padiglioni della gioielleria finita equivale a un comodo ed esaustivo "giro del mondo". E, posto che i tempi d'oro sono tramontati e che gli ordini si sono ridotti per numero e quantità, la Cina resta un mercato dalle potenzialità immense, con una fascia di media e alta borghesia che continua ad ampliarsi, e quindi «è un mercato dove è importante cominciare fin da oggi a consolidare la propria presenza». Per contro, la vastità della fiera impone una preparazione accurata, con un preventivo lavoro di comunicazione, pubbliche relazioni e inviti, onde evitare di passare inosservati tra le migliaia di espositori. Consapevoli delle difficoltà del settore a livello mondiale, gli organizzatori di Ubm hanno incrementato gli investimenti, per invitare 21 delegazioni di buyer dalla Cina continentale oltre a compratori da Israele, Italia, Federazione Russa, Sri Lanka e Vietnam. Resta ancora da sottolineare l'organizzazione di una città in cui ristoranti, mezzi di trasporto e taxi sono disponibili a cifre ragionevolissime e dove (quasi) tutto è pensato per facilitare e razionalizzare il soggiorno di chi visita Hong Kong per affari. l'Orafo 2015

Once again the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, organised every year in September by Ubm Asia in the Asian metropolis, exceeded expectations with record figures: 3752 exhibitors from 50 Countries and regions, over 60 thousand visitors from around the world, a total exhibition surface of 135 thousand square metre between the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (Hkcec), dedicated to finished jewellery, and AsiaWorld-Expo hosting stones, pearls and machinery. These figures underline the international and cosmopolitan level of this lively and crowded event, characterised by an almost infinite exhibition offering. The organisers proposed again the usual layout of pavilions, adding a new space entirely dedicated to the bridal sector. As a whole, the show evidenced rather good results, both for Italian and foreign exhibitors.

Among the aspects that many evidence as positive, we find the fact that the Hong Kong event is attended by buyers that are not present in other exhibitions; that the show, although huge, is organised in a very rational way and then easy to visit; that you can obtain results after some years of attendance, as Asian buyers are extremely prudent and favour consolidated presences; that the offering of corals, pearls and stones by Awe (Asia World-Expo) is extraordinary; that visiting the stands of finished jewellery is like setting off on a comfortable and exhaustive «world tour». Conversely, given that the golden ages have passed and that orders have decreased as for number and quantity, China remains a market with a huge potential, characterised by a middle and high bourgeois class that continues to widen and then «a market where it is important to start consolidating one’s own presence from now». On the other hand, the hugeness of the exhibition imposes an accurate preparation with an accurate work of communication, public relations and invitation in order to avoid passing unnoticed among thousands of exhibitors.

Aware of the difficulties of the sector at a global level, the organisers of Ubm increased investments to invite 21 delegations of buyers from mainland China besides buyers from Israel, Italy, the Russian Federation, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Finally, it should be underlined the organisation of a city where food, public transport and taxis are available at very reasonable prices and where (nearly) everything is meant to simplify and rationalise the stay of those visiting Hong Kong on a business trip.

L'edizione fieristica di settembre non ha sollevato grandi entusiasmi né forti delusioni.

Ma il calendario del 2016 desta perplessità di

i è conclusa realmente secondo le aspettative questa edizione settembrina di VicenzaOro: senza i fuochi d'artificio, che del resto nessuno si aspettava, ma anche senza le forti delusioni che qualcuno paventava.

Al netto degli immancabili giudizi contrastanti - qualche espositore felicissimo e qualcun altro scontentissimo di come erano andate le cose - forse la nota più positiva non è stata data tanto dai risultati di business in sé e per sé quanto piuttosto dal clima generale che si respirava, se non proprio ottimista almeno un po' più rilassato e fiducioso che nei mesi scorsi. Da parte di tanti imprenditori non manca, questa è la sensazione, la voglia di continuare a mettersi in gioco, di confrontarsi con altre realtà e altri mercati, di provare a proporre nuovi gioielli nel segno di quel Made in Italy che è ancora tanto ammirato e ricercato all'estero. Le aziende italiane pretenderebbero, probabilmente, un po' più di collaborazione e supporto a livello istituzionale. La fiera ha razionalizzato l'ingresso e migliorato la segnaletica, due aspetti che a gennaio erano stati oggetto di critiche. Non altrettanto bene sembra invece essersi mossa sul fronte del calendario, con un inizio fiera anticipato al 5 settembre che ha destato notevole malumore tra gli operatori del settore; i quali non hanno certo accolto con favore la notizia di un ulteriore anticipo per la prossima edizione 2016, in programma, secondo quanto annunciato nel sito della manifestazione, dal 3 al 7 Settembre. Not to mention the obvious highs and lows – some exhibitors were extremely happy, while others were quite disappointed for how things had gone may be the most positive aspect concerns not the results themselves, but the general atmosphere, if not optimistic at least a bit more relaxed and hopeful compared to last months. The feeling, in fact, is that many Italian entrepreneurs are still willing to risk, to confront with other competitors, realities and markets, to try to manufacture beautiful new jewellery based on that Made in Italy style that is still so admired and sought after abroad. May be they would like to obtain more collaboration and real support on an institutional level. The Vicenza exhibition rationalised the access and improved signs, two aspects that were criticised in the January edition of the fair.

But perhaps it did not perform as well in the definition of dates with a too early start of the exhibition on 5th September leading to some evident discontent among the operators in the sector: moreover, the exhibitors did not welcome in a positive way the news about a further advanced opening of the next edition in September 2016 that, as announced on the official site, will be held from 3rd to 7th September. a seconda edizione annuale di Homi, Salone degli Stili di Vita organizzato lo scorso Settembre da Fiera Milano, ha perfezionato la formula e ha fatto registrare un deciso aumento (+15%) di visitatori stranieri. La manifestazione, con le sue aree espositive e gli spazi eventi caratterizzati da un layout accattivante e curato, ha ospitato diverse iniziative collaterali e ha mostrato grande attenzione rispetto alla valorizzazione dei designer emergenti. Il mondo dei bijoux è stato protagonista di Homi Sperimenta ed è stato al centro di interessanti Trend Forum - Bijoux Directions 2016-2017, tenuti da esperti del settore. Tra le iniziative più apprezzate, la prima di una serie di mostre - curate da Alba Cappellieri e Bianca Cappello - sulla storia del bijou. Il tema di questa edizione è stato "La Dolce Vita e il bijou tra gli Anni '50 e '60", con 100 esemplari originali affiancati da disegni d'archivio e riviste d'epoca. I prossimi appuntamenti prevedono un percorso negli anni '70 e '80 durante l'edizione di Gennaio 2016 e un viaggio negli anni '90 fino ai giorni nostri a Settembre 2016.

The fall edition of Homi, the Lifestyle trade fair organized last September by Fiera Milano, improved the formula and recorded a strong increase (+15%) in foreign visitors. The show, with its exhibition and event areas characterised by an appealing and curated layout, hosted various collateral initiatives showing a great attention paid to the valorization of emerging designers. The world of custom jewels was the protagonist of Homi Sperimenta and at the centre of interesting Trend Forum - Bijoux Directions 20162017, held by experts from the sector. Among the most appreciated initiatives, the first of a number of exhibitions – curated by Alba Cappellieri and Bianca Cappello – on the history of custom jewels. The main theme of this edition was "The Dolce Vita and custom jewels between the ‘50s and ‘60s", with 100 original items complemented by archive drawings and period magazines. The next events will include a journey into the 70s and 80s during the January 2016 edition and from the 90s until today in September 2016.

urante la settimana della moda milanese si è ripresentato in zona Tortona White, manifestazione-bomboniera dedicata alla moda e agli accessori, con un occhio di riguardo alle nuove tendenze e al design più innovativo. In una sorta di sintesi tra artigianalità, tradizione e tecnologia, White ha proposto all'attenzione degli operatori una interessante selezione di abiti, bijoux, oggetti di pelletteria, scarpe, borse e molto altro ancora. Per quanto riguarda i bijoux è apparsa evidente l'interazione col mondo della moda, un legame sottolineato anche dall'utilizzo di passamanerie e tessuti, di collane e polsini che tendono a diventare parte integrante dell'abito, di anelli che vanno a coprire più dita o anche parte della mano, della ripresa di motivi e colori ispirati alla natura, tema tra i grandi protagonisti delle sfilate milanesi. White si è così riconfermato tra gli appuntamenti di sicuro interesse nell'ambito dell'affollatissima fashion week. The Milan Fashion Week saw the return of White, a bonbonnière event dedicated to fashion and accessories, with a special attention paid to new trends and to the most innovative design. A sort of synthesis between artisanship, tradition and technology, White brought to the operators’ attention an interesting selection of clothes, custom jewels, leather items, shoes, bags and a lot more.

As for custom jewels, the interaction with the world of fashion was immediately evident, a link also underlined by the use of trimmings and fabrics, of necklaces and cuffs becoming an integral part of the dress, of rings covering more fingers or even part of the hand, of the reviving of motives and colours inspired to nature, one among the great central themes of the fashion shows in Milan. Then White proved once again to be one among the most interesting events which are held in the extremely crowded Milan fashion week.

n braccialetto in edizione limitata, realizzato a mano in argento e pietre colorate: con questo bijou, i cui proventi saranno devoluti in beneficienza, Gagà Milano ha deciso di aiutare concretamente Timetolove, Onlus impegnata a favore di donne e bambini in tutto il mondo che quest'anno sosterrà le iniziative della Fondazione Bumi Sehat di Bali. Tuum ha invece festeggiato i 14 anni di attività della Fondazione P.u.p.i., istituita da Javier Zanetti insieme alla moglie Paula per aiutare i bambini residenti in un'area estremamente povera della Repubblica Argentina. A limited edition bracelet, handmade in silver and coloured stones: with this bijou, whose proceeds will be given to charity, Gagà Milano has decided to support Timetolove Onlus, committed to women and children all over the world that, this year, will patronize the initiatives of the Bumi Sehat Foundation in Bali. Tuum, instead, celebrated the 14 years of activity of P.u.p.i.. Foundation, established by Javier Zanetti together with his wife Paula to help children living in an extremely poor area in the Republic of Argentina. Tuum realised an Incipit Filum bracelet with the logo of the Association and, during an event in Milan, this same bracelet was given to Zanetti, a world football legend. The new watch collection Nature no Limits by Sector, supports, instead, the Lifegate project «Foreste in Piedi», meant to prevent and fight deforestation, fires and other phenomena threatening the Brazilian Amazon Forest.

The ultra-light watches are made in sandalwood or bamboo. Then, the national photo contest «Scatta per Emergency» came to its final phase, playing on the theme «Insieme» («together»), organised by the Group of Volunteers from Arezzo with the important support of Fondazione Graziella – Angelo Gori Onlus that made available the jewels for the first three placements. i sono voluti 121 tentativi per arrivare alla particolare tonalità di oro giallo della nuova collezione Crieri, denominata appunto Giallo 121. Al giallo dell'oro si accosta poi quello dei diamanti yellow che impreziosiscono le ultime creazioni dell'azienda valenzana. Corona il tutto la campagna stampa, giocata anch'essa sul medesimo colore, coordinata da Close Up Studios di Valenza. Zoccai ha scelto invece Riyo Mori, Miss Universo 2007, come testimonial della nuova campagna. h sì, cari amici. Roba da Decameron. Roba da Calandrino e Buffalmacco, che «giù per lo Mugnone vanno cercando di trovar l’elitropia, e Calandrino se la crede aver trovata...».

Sarà perché m’ero addormentato abbeverandomi alla Novella Terza della Giornata Ottava del Decameron di Giovanni Boccaccio, fatto è che feci un sogno strano: mi pareva d’essere alla Fiera di Vicenza - all’ultima, quella di settembre - e di star discutendo con qualcuno di diamanti, di diamanti sintetici, di trattamenti misteriosi, e poi quel qualcuno assunse le parvenze, anche nelle vestimenta, del ‘300, di Buffalmacco, e io quelle di Calandrino, e Buffalmacco stava dicendo a Calandrino: «O’ grullo, ma tu l’sai che quel trattamento del colore del diamante, capace ‘d’alterarlo temporaneamente; quello che lo migliora anche sino a tre gradi e che dopo un certo tempo svanisce riportando la pietra allo stato originario; quel trattamento instabile, reversibile, che una volta dileguatosi non lascia traccia alcuna di sé, come un fantasma’; è già in offerta, sul mercato, da due anni, e l’offerta proviene dall’America, e in America hanno macchinario avanzatissimo e scienziati molto esperti in questo settore, perché molto redditizio, ed alcuni di questi scienziati sono indiani con cittadinanza americana? E tu l’sai che il procedimento è basato sull’alterazione superficiale non permanente effettuata con fasci ionici (ion beams)? E che tali fasci ionici interagendo con gli atomi del diamante dan luogo ad effetti particolari? E che tali effetti non sono permanenti in quanto detti fasci ionici non alterano la struttura atomica del cristallo, ma semplicemente la eccitano, venendosi poi a ripristinare la condizione originaria, come nel caso della fosforescenza che, in certe pietre - compresi molti diamanti sintetici - persiste nella sua luminescenza per un certo tempo dopo la disattivazione della sorgente eccitante? E che tu vai cianciando?

Che tutti stanno investigando, che i laboratori gemmologici e la polizia israeliana stanno investigando, che niun sa nulla di nulla ancora, manco di che trattamento si tratta?». Così parlò Buffalmacco.

E il povero Calandrino: «Ma, allora, perché chi ‘l sa non parla e chi parla dice di non sapere?». Ma Buffalmacco già gli dava addosso con l’altra storia, quella che voleva coniugare il trattamento ‘fantasma’ con il coating o ricopertura pellicolare: «O’ grullo! Ma che biascichi? Che solo l’ottobre scorso si ‘sgamò’ un coating, capace di migliorare il grado di colore del diamante, visibile solamente ai 500 ingrandimenti? Ma se son 10 anni che si fa il coating su diamanti, smeraldi, rubini, zaffiri, acquemarine e topazi per intensificarne il colore o crearne di fantasia! E lo spessore di tal ricopertura pellicolare è di circa 400 nanometri, quasi impossibile da rivelare quando è molto sottile, come nel caso dei diamanti. È la modernizzazione della vecchia tecnica della ‘pennellatura’ del diamante con colore l'Orafo 2015

per far risaltare il bianco. Solo che adesso neanche con l’acido la si toglie, la ‘moderna pennellatura’. Bisogna bollire la pietra nell’acido solforico, ma sai che goduria allorché s’han per le mani lotti di pietre da 0,20, 0,30, 0,40 carati? Anche questa tecnica di coating utilizza i fasci di raggi ionici, con la differenza, però, che invece d’alterare la superficie della pietra, vi depositano uno strato di materiale che quasi sempre è un metallo, e dipendendo dal tipo di metallo s’ha uno specifico colore. Caro Calandrino, questa è la stessa tecnica che s’usa per gli occhiali iridescenti a specchio. Variando il materiale ricoprente e il suo spessore, si possono creare tutti i colori e gli effetti desiderati. E dovresti ben sapere che l’azienda più all’avanguardia nel ricoprire gemme è l’americana Azotic, e che l’Azotic ricopre solo topazi e quarzi di color fantasia per bigiotteria, e si rifiuta di trattare pietre preziose, ma che molti ex dipendenti dell’Azotic si son messi in proprio e lavorano in casa perché i generatori di ion beams non sono poi molto grossi e costosi, e volendo volendo si può ricoprir di tutto, dai metalli alle gemme. Capito, o grullo?». E Calandrino di rimando: «Ma, allora, Buffalmacco, alle competenti autorità basterebbe fare una somma (degli ex), sottrarre chi è morto, ha cambiato mestiere o non ha in casa generatori di ion beams, strizzare per benino il resto?». E Buffalmacco: «Eh, Calandrino, così si volesse colà ove si puote! È la stessa storia dei diamanti sintetici Cvd incolori: tutti pensano che il business sia nelle pietre grandi, dal mezzo carato in su. Macché! Il business è nelle pietrine dai 0,06 ct in giù: perché per fare una slide Cvd di diamante sintetico da tre millimetri occorrono poche ore, il macchinario per la produzione di Cvd non costa molto e le università indiane sono piene di ottimi giovani fisici che costan poco e son molto bravi a far funzionare le macchine. E sai che prezzi concorrenziali saltano fuori, per il sintetico Cvd, soprattutto per quei pavé con pietrine dai 0,01 ai 0,06 ct? E così, anche per questo, non è tanto questione di truffatori, di bischeri, ma di operatori del settore a cui interessa solo la convenienza economica: se poi vien fatto un uso improprio del lor prodotto, questo non faceva parte delle intenzioni loro... L’è chiaro?». E Calandrino: «Ma, allora, Buffalmacco, se qualcuno dovesse barare, lungo la filiera, chi proteggerà gli ultimi anelli della catena? In America c’è la Federal Trade Commission, qui da noi non v’era un Disegno di Legge che da 10 e più anni si perde continuamente tra Montecitorio e Palazzo Madama?». Passava in quel momento di là “un giovane astuto", chiamato Maso del Saggio, il quale così interloquì: «Che te ne cale, Calandrino, non t’impicciare!». Al che Calandrino gli girò un manrovescio, e fu a questo punto che io, di soprassalto, mi risvegliai.

by Paul Moonga as Ceo and Mikkel Berg as Cmo (Chief Marketing Officer), focused their interest on the product and on the relationship with dealers and retailers.

The Endless Jewelry Collection is set out in a wide variety of items, from colourful bracelets to charms that can be combined according to one’s mood and style to create a jewel that becomes different every day.

The new collection evidences as main protagonists leather necklaces, the 3-string bracelet in autumn colours, new charms and the elegant Silver Bracelet, designed

by Jennifer Lopez. This extreme flexibility offered to the consumer at very affordable prices is complemented by a great support by the company towards the store through display, advertising and marketing materials, beside the organization of VIP events and training courses for associated members including a number of webinars.

For example, the party organised during the latest edition of JCK in Las Vegas was attended by over 600 people including wholesalers, agents, journalists and other guests, while the opening of the first Endless Jewelry mono-brand in Asia, in Taipei, was celebrated by over three hundred people with a fashion show and a concert. «All this is based on imagination

– says Jennifer Lopez – expressed through the invention of a different bracelet every day». In fact, Jesper Nielsen’s aim is that of offering lightness and imagination and despite being business oriented like all managers, he keeps a strong ethical consciousness both in his search for the product quality and in the attention paid to the sustainability of processes. In fact, he decided to entrust the production of his collection to Manish Kumara from New Delhi that can ensure excellent working conditions and environment protection.

Giancarlo Montebello, known designer of “body ornaments” (rather than mere jewels), after working as a successful editor of artist goldsmith creations, has been following his own independent concept path for years. Through this interview we tried to rummage a bit in his “trunk”, even to learn more about the present and future designer.

We are intrigued and eager to understand why you claimed that your work consists in the search for the geography of the body. What does this mean, exactly?

«The expression “geography of the body” is one of my life and designer licence; otherwise I should say “anatomy”, but I think this term is too medical. I study and live with great attention the destination of use of my various jewels, so that they are at their best for the decoration role they must play».

Form and substance are at the core of every designer’s activity. How do you live this relationship?

«I live it well after many years of practice; the relationship of the designer must be characterised by a mutuality between ideas, matters and the involved techniques to merge them into a whole and fully achieve what viewed before».

aim at representing the person wearing them. Does a common element exist in your creative work? Which shapes are the most recurring?

«The ellipse, which is my favourite geometrical sign, and golden gems cut by the lapidarist».

Sometimes your ornaments give the impression of being “works in progress”.

Where does this passion for the apparently “unfinished” come from?

«For me everything finished loses dynamics, a work that is not finished has a becoming».

It seems as you particularly like “playing” and continuously experimenting with matter.

«Yes, manual working is important, even though it depends on models: it can prevail for some items and have a lesser importance for others as it requires a mechanical working. In any case, behind both hands and a machine tool, there must always be a reasoning human mind possibly with a vocation, and then materials with their stimuli».

What role does culture play in your job? To be precise, to which aesthetic principles do you feel more akin? I add: Giancarlo Montebello has had the honour to collaborate with such artists as Man Ray, Lucio Fontana, Piero Dorazio, Sonia Delaunay and many others. What did the great masters teach you? Today do you consider yourself a master?

«Culture helps building a person. The drive to form a culture over time is linked to the longing for the curiosity of knowing, understanding and being able to give yourself answers; this is the life project par excellence, “a work in progress” because it can “progress” and can be reworked for the rest of a life. All this will be invaluable if introduced in one’s own work since the beginning. This is what I learned from the great masters listening to them and watching them, reading and studying hard, visiting exhibitions and museums from 18 to 50 years of age. I am not a master because I still have a lot to learn».

Can you explain the meaning of the ornaments that are dearest to you.

«Bradamante Ornaments»: «Strength Courage Gentleness».

«They are fragments of a stainless steel chain of an imaginary dress, to feel that I am simultaneously ancient, contemporary

and part of the future; an allegory of a secret and triune woman: Bradamante is also Angelica and Alcina at the same time».

What is the role of the jewel in our society?

«It is virtually an accessory».

You also designed the so called home jewels.

«For the house I designed a nail, to be precise a wooden carpenter nail usually employed by builders in yards: a “nail on which you can hang everything”, made in gold to be inserted into the house wall.».

Are you more satisfied when one of your jewels is on display in a museum or when it is worn by a woman?

«It can also happen that you have the best of both worlds, as happened last year at the Triennal Exhibition of Italian Design entitled “Beyond Crisis”: I was able to attend as the owner renounced for a year to wear a necklace she frequently wore just to lend it to me».

How should the future goldsmith designer be?

«There are already some fully experimental hints, may be designers should also be mathematicians, know nanotechnologies, electronics and medicine, physics, the new materials characterised by astonishing features. It will certainly be way different from today».

250 years of beauty and records See Page 73 Tracing back the foundation of the maison Vacheron Constantin means making a huge leap backwards in time, skipping the twentieth and nineteenth to reach the eighteenth century, the age of Enlightment with its literary salons, the Encyclopédie and the philosophical disputes raised by the devastating earthquake in Lisbon. In those years, so far from our times, precisely in 1755, a 24-year old master watchmaker from Geneva, Jean-Marc Vacheron, hired his first apprentice and founded what is now Vacheron Constantin, the oldest watch manufactory in the world boasting a continuous activity (260 years!) since its foundation. Run by his son Abraham since 1785, the maison comes through the riots of the French Revolution and, in 1790, creates its first known complication – a wall pendulum-clock telling the time, the day of the week and the date.

manufactory begins producing more and more complicated items that start being exported to France and Italy. In 1819, following the collaboration with François Constantin, a businessman, it turns into the new company Vacheron Constantin, soon expanding overseas, first in the United States, with the pioneering opening of an office in New York and then in Brazil and Cuba.

Among the landmarks in the history of this really exceptional maison we should certainly include the invention of the pantograph allowing for the production of perfectly identical and interchangeable movements and that in 1844 led to the award of the golden medal “De la Rive” from the Society of Arts for the “most useful invention of the industry of Geneva”. In 1880 the Maltese cross, a symbol of perfection, is adopted as the manufactory logo. The twentieth century opens with another important step, the registration of the first calibre with the Geneva Seal, established in 1886 to protect the know-how of the watchmaking from Geneva and still today an undisputed and yearned for symbol of excellence. In 1792, the company was the first watchmaking manufactory to be awarded the prestigious “Diplome du Prestige de la France”, confirming the greatness of a maison that always stood out for its innovative spirit, the accuracy of the execution, its investments in technical and aesthetic research.

The Vacheron Constantin models characterising the history and taste of the world watchmaking are numerous: truly outstanding items, with a shape often considered innovative for the time - tonneau, “Toledo”, square: magnificent pocket chronometers and chronographers, ultra-thin, enamelled timekeepers, characterised by great complications and new and extremely sophisticated calibres.

It is not by chance that these specimens were appreciated since the beginning by royal houses, monarchs, Maharajas, politicians, businessmen, celebrities in any corner of the world: like the pocket watch made in 1935 for King Farouk of Egypt, one of the most complicated pocket models ever realised, or the thinnest movement in the world, 1,64 mm, created after 20 years to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the foundation.

Richemont Group: it is currently present in about eighty countries, hiring over 1000 persons and owing own boutiques and a series of carefully selected retailers all over the world. The manufactory is located in three different sites: the “historic” one, located close to the first workshops at Tour de l’Ile, hosts a boutique and the historic inestimable heritage of the maison: it is here that thematic exhibitions and cultural events are often organised.

The international branch and a first class manufactory are based in Plan-les-Ouates, near Geneva, carrying out production and assembly activities. The other productive site is situated in the Vallée de Joux and is dedicated to the making of components and of part of the decoration of the movements.

Aware of its history and well determined to preserve and hand down its own competences and core values, the manufactory pays great attention to the training of apprentices; moreover, in 2011 Vacheron Constantin, that also boast sponsorships and partnerships with scientific and cultural bodies and institutions, as well as with education institutes all over the world, created its own Institute for the development of human resources and jobs. It also founded the Atelier Cabinotiers – Special Creations, with

a team specifically dedicated to the creation of unique models that, even in the choice of the name, reinforces the concept of tiny sixteenth century workshops animated by extremely skilful artisans, the origin of the watchmaking greatness of Geneva, precisely said “cabinets”.

Today, in order to celebrate the 260th anniversary of the foundation, Vacheron Constantin launched the first seven models of the new Harmony collection, which immediately reported considerable success.

Available in limited edition, characterised by a coussin shape and a design inspired by one of the first wrist chronographs launched by the brand in 1928, these beautiful models feature an exclusive decoration of the movement, with an original motif inspired by the arabesques enhancing the bridge of the oldest pocket watch made by Jean-Marc Constantin in 1755. A proud comeback to its own origins, that - as always - is able to meet a contemporary spirit. The future history of Vacheron Constantin surely holds a lot in store for collectors and lovers of beautiful watches, in its endless search for perfection and beauty. After all, in 1819 François Constantin wrote in a letter to his partner Jacques Barthélémi Vaheron: «To do better if it is possible. And it is always possible». Impact: symmetry, colour and a cascade of flower petals turn this window shop into a pleasant visual landing during a walk in the fashion district.

Components: a 40x50 panel covered with silk petals of red flowers is the background for window displays; the window shop is split by a shelf covered with pleated satin; classic displays in cream colour like the shelf; in the centre of the window shop a perforated wood panel is used as a screen towards the interior part of the boutique.

Lighting: 8 halogen spotlights on the ceiling of the window-shop.

Strong points: the colourful and soft background defining and highlighting what is placed in the front. In this way jewels are emphasised in a simple and elegant way.

The «neutral» shelf focuses the attention on the front of the image.

Weak points: the background colour could have been less strong, better matching the jewels. On the contrary, the “neutral” shelf on which jewels are placed does not create a sufficient contrast. It would have been ideal for ornaments with brighter colours.

the odd story of the ions See Page 104 Well yes, my dear friends. Stuff for Decameron. Stuff for Calandrino and Buffalmacco that “go coasting along the Mugnone in search of the heliotrope and Calandrino thinketh to have found it...”.

Maybe because yesterday I fell asleep inebriated after reading the third story of the eighth day of Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio, the fact is that I had a very strange dream: I thought I was at the Fiera di Vicenza, attending the latest exhibition held in September, and I was discussing with someone about diamonds, synthetic diamonds and mysterious treatments. Then, that same someone took the guise, even in his fourteenth century garments, of Buffalmacco and I that of Calandrino and Buffalmacco was telling Calandrino: «You goose, don’t you know that? Don’t you know that that treatment of the colour of a diamond, able to alter it temporarily, the one that enhances it even to three grades and after a while disappears restoring the stone to its original state; that unstable and reversible treatment that, once disappeared leaves no trace whatsoever, like a ghost, just that one – I say - has already been offered on the market for two years and this offering comes from America, and in America they have a cutting-edge machine along with highly experienced scientists in this sector, as it is very profitable, and some of these scientists are Indians with American citizenship?

Don’t you know that this process is based on the non-permanent superficial alteration carried out with ion beams? And that by interacting with diamond atoms these ion beams generate peculiar effects? And that these effects are not permanent as the said ion beams do not alter the atomic structure of crystal, but they simply excite it, and the original condition is restored as in the case of phosphorescence that, in some stones, including many synthetic diamonds, persists in its luminescence for a certain period following the deactivation of the excitation source? This is it, my dear Calandrino. And you, what are you chattering? That everyone is investigating,

that gemmological laboratories along with the Israeli police are investigating, that no one knows anything yet, not even the nature of this treatment?» Thus spoke Buffalmacco. And poor Calandrino could only feel small and ask Buffalmacco: «But, then, why those who know do not speak and those who speak claim they do not know?» And Buffalmacco replied starting another story, the one that wanted to combine the tale of the “ghost” treatment with the coating or film. Buffalmacco said: «You goose! what are you mumbling? That just last October a coating was rumbled, able to improve the colour grade of diamonds, only visible at 500 magnifications? Come on, how goose you are!

The coating has been applied for 10 years on diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires, aquamarines and topazes to enhance their colour or to invent fancy ones! That film is 400-nanometer thick, almost impossible to detect when it is very thin as in the case of diamonds. It is the modern version of the old technique called diamond “brushwork” using a colour to accentuate white. Unfortunately, the “modern brushwork” can not be removed even with acid. You must boil the stone in sulphuric acid, but can you imagine how pleasant this could be when you have to deal with lots of 0.20, 0.30 and 0.40 ct stones?

Also this coating technique uses ion beams, but these latter, instead of altering the stone surface, deposit on it a layer of material, most of the time a metal, and according to the type a specific colour is obtained. My dear Calandrino, this is the same technique employed for mirror iridescent glasses, created and developed in America for military use. By varying the covering material along with its thickness you could create all the desired colours and effects. You should also know that Azotic is the most advanced American company when it comes to cover gems, only covering topazes and quartzes of fancy colours for custom jewellery and though it definitely refuses to deal with precious stones, some former employees set up on their own and work from home as ion beams generators are not very big and expensive and, if you like, you can cover everything, from metals to gems. Have you understood, you goose?». And Calandrino replied: «But then, Buffalmacco, everything is wrong, everything is to be made again! and subtract those who died, changed job or have no generators of ion beams in their dinette or cellar, squeeze well all the rest and the chain letter would certainly come out, or am I wrong?» And Buffalmacco: «Well, Calandrino, should this deed be willed where one can do whatever he wills! It is the same with colourless CVD synthetic diamonds: everybody thinks that only big stones from half carats onward are profitable. Nothing doing! The real business consists in dealing with small stones from 0.06 ct downward.

Why? Simply because making a CVD slide of a three-millimetre synthetic diamond takes a few hours, the machine for the production of CVD does not cost much and Indian universities are full of excellent young physicists that cost little and are very good at operating the equipment. And don’t you know that competitive prices spring up for the synthetic CVD especially for those pavés with small 0.01 – 0.06 stones? And so, even for this, as for the treatments described a short while ago, it is not just a question of fraudsters or dolts, but of industry operators only interested in economic profit: then, if their product is used improperly, this was not part of their intentions. Is this clear?».

And Calandrino: «But, then Buffalmacco, if someone cheated along the supply chain, who would protect the last links? In America they have the Federal Trade Commission. In our country wasn’t there a bill that, for over 10 years, has been continually got lost in that misty harbour located between Montecitorio and Palazzo Madama? Weren’t there any proposals of regulation? What happened to all this, who cares about the last links of the supply chain?». At that instant a young man was passing by “astute and plausible, who was called Maso del Saggio and who, hearing certain traits of Calandrino’s simplicity, determined to amuse himself at his expense...” and thus he spoke: «What is it to you, Calandrino? Don’t meddle!» At that Calandrino gave him a thick ear and at that point, I myself, Luigi, suddenly woke up.
