intergem trends Torna a ottobre la fiera tedesca, trampolino di lancio per le tendenze che riguardano le pietre preziose.

Il colore rimane il protagonista anche di questa edizione Ritenuta la patria dell’industria gemmologica tedesca, la città di IdarOberstein si prepara ad accogliere la prossima edizione di Intergem.

L’importante manifestazione dedicata alla manifattura locale e alle pietre preziose aprirà le porte dal 28 settembre al primo ottobre a 140 brand e a più di 3000 buyer del settore. «Dal momento che la maggior parte degli espositori ha un orientamento internazionale – spiega Kai-Uwe Hille, amministratore delegato della fiera – Intergem non solo raccoglie le ultime tendenze, ma suggerisce anche nuove idee di prodotto». Questo perché la gamma di pietre preziose che si possono trovare visitando la fiera è vastissima.

Basti pensare alla selezione di tormaline Paraiba provenienti da Brasile e Africa, o alle numerose pietre, come ametista, spinello, tanzanite, kunzite e molte altre ancora, che richiamano le sfumature del colore Pantone dell’anno, l’Ultra Violet. ■ Considered the hometown of the German gemmological industry, the city of Idar-Oberstein is getting ready to host the next edition of Intergem. Era il 1908 quando il giovane artigiano Arturo Facchini fondò l’omonima azienda, oggi leader nel settore del packaging di lusso. Dal piccolo laboratorio di Genova al grande stabilimento di Bologna sono passati 110 anni (festeggiati dal Ceo Francesco Maria Soldano e dall’amministratore unico Mario Mandes – erede del fondatore – durante l’ultima edizione di OroArezzo) scanditi da successi e prodotti di qualità: come la linea Radica degli anni ’80 o gli astucci Artù e Tag che hanno ottenuto il brevetto di Invenzione e Utilità. ■ In 1908, the young artisan Arturo Facchini founded the homonymous company, now a leading one in the luxury packaging sector.

ohn Fitzgerald e Jacqueline Kennedy rappresentano forse una delle coppie più amate della storia, il cui sogno rispecchiava quello dell’America negli anni ’60.

Un amore nato a Georgetown (Washington, D.C.), quando lui non era ancora senatore del Massachusetts, coronato dal matrimonio nel 1953 e proseguito durante la corsa alla presidenza nel 1960. Il resto, compresa la tragica morte di Jfk, è storia nota. A 65 anni dal celebratissimo matrimonio i Kennedy tornano con una mostra fotografica dedicata al mito che sono diventati. Dal 13 settembre al 13 ottobre l’Institut Français di Milano ospiterà al Palazzo delle Stelline The Kennedy Years, una raccolta di 160 foto, molte delle quali inedite, provenienti dagli archivi Kennedy. In molte Jacqueline è raffigurata con i suoi più cari gioielli, tra cui quelli disegnati da Schlumberger per Tiffany & Co. (partner del progetto). La First Lady aveva, infatti, una passione per i famosi bracciali smaltati tanto da possederne uno per ogni colore (da allora saranno definiti Jackie Bracelets).

Sempre di Tiffany & Co. è la spilla Berry Brooch in oro giallo con diamanti e rubini regalatale da Jfk per la nascita del loro secondo figlio e indossata in numerose occasioni istituzionali. Completano la mostra l’unica riproduzione dell’abito da sposa di Jackie, un modello della sedia a dondolo tanto amata dal presidente e i video della coppia presidenziale durante i soggiorni in Italia. ■ John Fitzgerald and Jacqueline Kennedy may represent one of the most loved couples in history, whose

The rest, including JFK's tragic death, is a known story. After 65 years from the wedding that made history, the Kennedys are back under the spotlight with a photographic exhibition dedicated to the myth they have been turned into. From 13th September to 13th October, the Institut Français of Milan will host, at the Palazzo delle Stelline, The Kennedy Years, a collection of 160 pictures, many of them unpublished, coming from the Kennedy’s archive.

In many of them Jacqueline is wearing her most beloved jewels, including those designed by Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. (partner in this project). In fact, the First Lady was so fond of the famous enamelled bracelets that she owned one for each colour (since then they would be called Jackie Bracelets). Again by Tiffany & Co., we find the Berry Brooch in yellow gold, diamonds and rubies she received from JFK for the birth of their second son and worn in many institutional occasions. The exhibition is complemented by the unique replica of Jackie's wedding dress, a model of the rocking chair the president loved so much and some videos of the presidential couple during their stays in Italy.

ero e proprio gioiello cult che torna ciclicamente a risplendere sui red carpet più prestigiosi, l'anello doppio - e addirittura triplo - è tornato di prepotenza al dito, anzi alle dita, di attrici, dive e influencer. Le versioni più preziose prevedono l'abbinamento dell'oro o del platino a pavé di diamanti bianchi o fancy colour oppure a pietre naturali dai colori vivaci, che sottolineano con decisione l'originalità della struttura. Non a caso il double ring è molto amato dalle grandi maison della gioielleria, pronte a raccogliere la sfida della creazione di un gioiello che deve unire al look grintoso e singolare un comfort perfetto. ■ True cult jewel that is cyclically seen shining on the most prestigious red carpets, the double - or even triple – ring imposed itself again to be worn on the finger, or better on the fingers, of actresses, celebrities and influencers. The most precious versions combine gold or platinum to white or fancy colour diamonds or even to natural stones characterised by bright hues, strongly emphasising the originality of the frame. It is not by chance that the double ring is a beloved piece for big jewellery maisons, challenged to create a jewel meant to combine a gritty and unique look with a full comfort.

obile erede del Giapponismo - conio usato per descrivere l’influenza esercitata dall’estetica giapponese sull’arte e sull’artigianato occidentale a cavallo tra Ottocento e Novecento - la libellula è una figura amatissima e ricorrente nella storia della gioielleria. L'Art Nouveau, che tanto apprezzò le stampe e l'artigianato del paese del Sol Levante, soprannominato appunto "l'isola delle libellule", fece di questo piccolo insetto, considerato oltretutto un po' magico in virtù della sua somiglianza con la silhouette di una fatina, il protagonista di raffinate spille, orecchini, objets d'art. Da allora i brand più prestigiosi hanno riprodotto la leggerezza del suo volo, la delicatezza della sua struttura e i colori cangianti delle sue ali intessendo preziosi trafori in oro, platino e diamanti o elaborando pavé

ntrato nel mondo del gioiello e della Fiera di Vicenza da solo due anni, Marco Carniello, giovane direttore della Divisione Jewellery & Fashion di Ieg, è già in grado di scattare una fotografia realistica del settore. «Venivo da esperienze diverse - spiega - ma il modello di approccio che avevo maturato nella consulenza aziendale mi ha consentito di entrare abbastanza velocemente anche nelle dinamiche del settore prezioso».

Il quadro che ha trovato l’ha stupita?

«Devo dire di no. Ho constatato che anche in questo, come in molti altri settori, accanto a progetti imprenditoriali che sviluppano creatività, produzione, distribuzione, marketing e comunicazione di brand a 360 °, si trova anche una cultura artigianale, a carattere

industriale, concentrata sulla produzione. E questo sia in Italia che all’estero. È quindi un panorama stimolante proprio per le ottime prospettive di sviluppo di tante realtà che sono state fino a oggi concentrate prevalentemente sugli aspetti produttivi e che si stanno aprendo a progetti più complessi».

Ha individuato qualche particolare criticità? «È un settore complesso ma non più complesso di altri, che ha registrato in passato un grande successo e che poi è stato costretto a ridimensionarsi, perdendo molte unità. Negli ultimi cinque anni però la situazione sta cambiando e si sta evolvendo in positivo».

La Fiera di Vicenza è per vocazione paladina del Made in Italy, ma Ieg (Italian Exhibition Group) ha dinamiche più ampie e internazionali: qual è il ruolo del settore orafo nella visione strategica del Gruppo?

«Ieg punta su settori forti della manifattura italiana, come l’oreficeria e la gioielleria, ma una manifestazione in grado di presentarsi a tutto il mondo non può limitarsi alla sola offerta del Made in Italy perché i buyer internazionali, pur molto interessati al prodotto italiano, desiderano vedere anche altro. Per essere competitivi su scala almeno continentale l’offerta deve essere globale. La Fiera di Vicenza sta crescendo appunto come vetrina per il meglio del prodotto italiano e di quello internazionale; la presenza straniera selezionata non toglie valore al Made in Italy ma lo completa e lo rende più appetibile per i buyer».

Che tipo di impatto avrà sulle fiere orafe l’ampliamento degli spazi fieristici da poco annunciata?

«L’idea è di portare anche l’infrastruttura di VicenzaOro a un livello qualitativo pari a quello dei quartieri fieristici più moderni e internazionali, non in senso scenografico ma in senso funzionale agli espositori e ai visitatori, così da permetterci di crescere anche in aree che a oggi riteniamo limitate per indisponibilità di spazi.

Intendo settori che già presidiamo (dal prodotto unbranded alla fashion jewellery) e ai quali sono dedicati il padiglione quattro e il padiglione due ma che avrebbero bisogno di più respiro. Si tratta di aziende italiane ma anche di community estere che riteniamo strategiche come i dealer di gemme e alcuni marchi stranieri dell’alto di gamma e del bijou che sappiamo essere di grande interesse per i nostri visitatori».

Ieg organizza anche Oroarezzo. Quali sono e saranno le sinergie e le distinzioni tra la manifestazione vicentina e quella toscana?

«Oroarezzo si focalizzerà sempre più sull’oreficeria unbranded italiana e avrà come target gli operatori legati alla distribuzione wholesale o comunque al commercio di oreficeria a volumi. VicenzaOro invece rimarrà rappresentativa di tutta la filiera (dalle gemme al gioiello di marca) per operatori di tutti i tipi, dai grossisti ai dettaglianti. Questo modello distintivo ci sta già premiando perché le ultime edizioni di entrambe le manifestazioni sono andate bene».

Quali novità o cambiamenti dobbiamo aspettarci dalla partnership recentemente siglata da Ieg con Emerald Expositions (EEX) organizzatore, tra gli altri eventi, di Couture Las Vegas?

«Gli Usa sono uno dei nostri mercati di sbocco più importanti e questo accordo ci permetterà di aumentare il presidio su quest’area. Inoltre il debutto operativo della partnership coincide con l’avvio di Premier, un evento trade a cui Eex stava lavorando da qualche anno e che aprirà i battenti durante la Las Vegas Market Week dal 31 maggio al 4 giugno del 2019. La manifestazione sarà ospitata, insieme con Las Vegas Antique Jewelry and Watch Show e con AGTA GemFair, al Las Vegas Convention Center e si focalizzerà su un’offerta qualitativamente alta di gioielleria, oro-

Avremo quindi la doppia opportunità di proporre sia l’alto di gamma con Couture sia l’oreficeria unbranded con Premier. Di fatto questo approdo sulla piazza americana ci consente di dialogare con tutti gli attori più importanti del settore, garantendo alle nostre aziende la cura organizzativa e il prestigio di cui gode Couture anche nel settore unbranded. Nell’ambito di Premier il nostro padiglione italiano avrà una posizione di primissimo piano: possiamo dire senza esagerare che saremo le star dell’iniziativa e daremo alla manifattura italiana la massima visibilità».

Bros Manifatture Come si è sviluppato il gruppo nella sua struttura attuale? Mio padre ha fondato una manifattura di cinturini per orologi d'alta gamma nel 1979; nel 2002 con Brosway è approdato al gioiello fashion. nel 2008 è nato S'agapò, brand di fast fashion jewellery; le acquisizioni di Rosato, fine jewellery, e Pianegonda, contemporary design jewellery, sono arrivate nel 2011 e nel 2015. Nessuna cannibalizzazione? No, ogni brand ha le proprie specificità, il proprio target, una propria comunicazione. Su quali nuovi progetti state lavorando? Stiamo sviluppando il mercato Usa e quello cinese, con negozi e partner in loco e una distribuzione online. La sede produttiva è sempre rimasta nelle Marche. quanto conta per la sua famiglia il legame col territorio? Tantissimo. siamo nati in una regione meravigliosa, che ci ha ispirato con la sua bellezza e la sua storia. cerchiamo di ricambiare riportando in vita strutture in abbandono o contribuendo alla ristrutturazione di tesori culturali. omo dai molti interessi e dalle molte attività, Andrea Fatti vanta una solida reputazione e relazioni importanti non solo nel regno dei preziosi, dove opera da oltre trent'anni, ma anche nel jet-set internazionale e nei mondi del collezionismo, delle aste e persino della haute cuisine - è membro effettivo dell'Accademia Italiana della Cucina, istituzione culturale della Repubblica Italiana, e della Fondazione Italiana Sommelier. «Ho la fortuna di essere nato a Borgo Sansepolcro e di risiedere a Corciano, due tra i borghi più belli d'Italia: la bellezza, direi anzi il continuo esercizio alla bellezza, che non è mai scontata, è un punto fermo nella mia vita» commenta.

I gioielli del suo brand Andrea del Borgo nascono come pezzi unici esclusivi, "vestiti" delle gemme più preziose, che Andrea Fatti acquista personalmente dai dealer e alle aste in tutto il mondo, e sono destinati a selezionatissimi punti vendita luxury nei cinque continenti. «Può essere una gemma dal fascino singolare a ispirarmi: in quel caso a volte mi immagino già il gioiello finito e addirittura quale tra i miei rivenditori lo tratterà. Perché per me il lusso più grande sono le relazioni umane, e non lo dico per civetteria. Per fortuna posso permettermi di lavorare solo con le persone con cui sono realmente in consonanza e con cui stabilisco rapporti di amicizia che vanno al di là delle relazioni commerciali. Non esiste un criterio preciso che ispiri i suoi gioielli da favola se non una sincera curiosità

per le cose «più belle e più strane» e un gusto sicuro per lo straordinario. «Nel lavoro come nella vita mi piace stupire e ancor più farmi stupire: ogni cosa, ogni viaggio, ogni incontro merita attenzione e può trasformarsi in un'esperienza eccezionale che può arricchirti e magari cambiarti un po' le prospettive». Lui di viaggi ne ha fatti e ne fa tantissimi, per curiosità o per lavoro, che lo portano dai luoghi d'estrazione delle gemme in Colombia e Birmania alle Borse dei Diamanti di Anversa e Tel Aviv, a selezionare le perle in Giappone o alle aste di Hong Kong, alle fiere internazionali o ai meeting dei gem connoisseurs più esclusivi. i vuole un certo coraggio per affidare un’impresa con un fatturato importante e una storia di oltre 70 anni alla visione di un giovane amministratore delegato di trent’anni appena. Eppure i soci della Domenico Alessi di Bassano del Grappa (Vi), solida realtà famigliare attiva nella produzione di catene in oro, si sono trovati d’accordo nel dare fiducia a Filippo, rappresentante della quarta generazione, che fin da giovanissimo ha trovato in azienda la sua missione e la sua professione. Abile mediatore, capace di far trovare un accordo anche ai tavoli più conflittuali, fermo nelle decisioni e nell’assumersi qualche rischio quando necessario, ha proposto il suo piano quinquennale al consiglio di amministrazione in un momento delicato, quando tra il 2013 e il 2014 i numeri cominciavano a essere meno brillanti delle attese. on è stato, il 2017, un anno che resterà negli annali del mercato pubblicitario italiano. Solo la pubblicità sui motori di ricerca, sui social e su YouTube, stimata a parte con un sondaggio presso un campione di 800 aziende inserzioniste, riesce a far quadrare i conti e chiudere l’anno con un modesto +0,4%. Limitandoci invece al perimetro tradizionale dei mezzi monitorati mensilmente, gli investimenti mostrano una flessione del 2,1%: certo non un cataclisma, ma comunque una battuta d’arresto rispetto ai segnali incoraggianti del recente passato. Sulla stessa linea si è mossa la raccolta pubblicitaria nel settore della gioielleria, che segna un -1,9%, corrispondente a poco più di un milioncino di euro: il contatore della spesa in advertising si è fermato a 58.852.000 euro. Dalla rilevazione di settore restano esclusi però i formati web più in crescita menzionati precedentemente, con i quali è lecito supporre che anche il comparto orafo chiuderebbe su cifre leggermente superiori a quelle del 2016, segno che la ripresa stenta a decollare ma la fiducia non è venuta meno. Insomma, l’ultima rassegna degli investimenti si chiudeva pronosticando un “consolidamento” o una “lieve flessione”, e così è stato. Proprio su Internet tuttavia, considerando i dati disponibili relativi principalmente alla pubblicità display,

cioè i banner, si osserva la discrepanza più significativa tra il dato orafo e quello della generalità dei mercati (Fig. 2): mentre nell’insieme di tutte le altre classi di prodotto il risultato è positivo nella misura dell’1,8%, in gioielleria la Rete subisce una contrazione di un 8% abbondante. In controtendenza e al ribasso anche gli investimenti sul mezzo cinema: +2,4% il dato nazionale, -5% tra i preziosi, benché in entrambi i casi gli stanziamenti siano ormai ridotti al lumicino. Diametralmente opposto lo scenario tv, che vede una leggera flessione su base nazionale e di contro una crescita superiore all’8% nell’oreficeria-bigiotteria. In termini percentuali, gli aumenti più sensazionali si sono però avuti nella pubblicità esterna, stazionaria a livello globale e aumentata di un terzo nel nostro compartimento merceologico, e sulla radio, che dimostra la sua straordinaria vitalità e capacità di attrarre inserzionisti di ogni provenienza con un sorprendente + 5,4%, la migliore performance dell’anno, e che tra i gioiellieri, nonostante non sia il mezzo più adeguato per evidenti ragioni estetiche, raddoppia e quasi triplica il suo fatturato, ancorché modesto. In sofferenza invece la stampa, sia nel consuntivo generale che in quello specifico di categoria, con decrementi per quotidiani e periodici che vanno dal 6% all’8% nel totale mercati, dal 15% al 20% e oltre nel mercato orafo.

Sottorappresentati sono al contrario i ra, e di Sector per la pubblicità esterna, con un all in di quotidiani, 7,8% contro 10,2%, e soprattutto Internet e oltre 400.000 euro, anche in questo caso appena dietro Panla radio: il loro 3% del budget complessivo della gioielleria dora. Pandora è dunque il leader assoluto della nostra classifica, è meno della metà della fetta che questi canali rappresentama è tutto il pacchetto di testa a sembrare inamovibile (Fig. 1). no sul totale della pubblicità italiana. nonostante lo stanziamento quasi irrisorio, nei periodi pubblicitariamente più fiacchi. È il caso di Fabiani, che oltre a essere salito sul podio di gennaio ha prodotto durante tutto l’anno un notevole sforzo che lo ha portato sulla soglia dell’1%, risultando secondo dopo Cartier tra gli esclusi dall’elenco; e di Spadarella e Rue des Mille, al top con soli 38.000 euro nel negletto mese di agosto (il secondo si è comunque distinto anche tra i più assidui frequentatori della stampa periodica, oltre ad aver messo in campo un’intensa attività social). Oltre a questi, un nome non esattamente nuovo, Pomellato, che nel ranking lascia spazio alla sua creatura, Dodo, ma si riprende un po’ di visibilità in pieno back to school, concentrando il grosso dei suoi investimenti a ottobre. L’andamento degli investimenti di Dodo, complessivamente superiori, è invece risultato più uniforme, senza particolari picchi, scelta operata anche da numerosi altri brand. Come si può vedere infatti nella Fig. 5, che mostra l’oscillazione degli investimenti mensili (tecnicamente, il “coefficiente di variazione” o “deviazione standard relativa”), la distribuzione delle risorse lungo il corso dell’anno segue strategie profondamente diverse da marchio a marchio, indipendentemente dall’entità del budget. È la vecchia diatriba tra le scuole di pensiero del bursting (o flighting), e della continuity, riferita prevalentemente al planning degli spazi televisivi ma esportabile anche agli altri media. Ci sono firme che privilegiano una concentrazione della pressione pubblicitaria in periodi brevi e intensi. Rosato e Giorgio Visconti sono i paladini di questa dottrina: il primo convoglia il 70% del proprio budget in spot televisivi da mandare in onda a dicembre, e il resto sono frattaglie sparpagliate nei restanti mesi; il secondo mette sul piatto il 100% del suo budget destinato alla stampa tra novembre e dicembre, e dopo il blitz si ritira dietro le quinte per ripresentarsi l’anno successivo nello stesso periodo. Sul versante opposto ci sono viceversa brand più compassati, che preferiscono un approccio costante e un’allocazione degli spazi disseminata nel tempo, fatta di pulsazioni e di periodi di silenzio, o di un gocciolamento regolare e perseverante. Recarlo, Giovanni Raspini, Amen, Tiffany & Co. e Dodo propendono decisamente per questo stile di pianificazione, collocandosi tutte al di sotto dell’oscillazione media degli investimenti pubblicitari orafi, che negli ultimi tre anni si è sempre attestata intorno al 90-95%, e comunicando in modo più assiduo senza mai alzare troppo la voce: Recarlo, ad esempio, ripartisce lo stanziamento assegnando a ogni mensilità una quota tra l’1,5% e il 15% del totale, minimo 11.000 massimo 110.000 euro, non un decimale di più. Idem Giovanni Raspini, presente ogni mese senza mai superare il 18% del proprio investimento. Qualunque sia la tecnica vincente,

dine dagli stessi cinque brand che avevano dominato la scena della comunicazione preziosa nel 2016 – oltre a Pandora, ritroviamo in successione Stroili, Morellato, Brosway e Swarovski – e anche i tre piazzamenti successivi sono appannaggio delle stesse firme dell’anno prima, con la sola differenza che Kidult, raddoppiando il budget, scavalca i concorrenti Breil e S’Agapõ. A parte l’exploit del brand della milanese Mabina, quasi tutti gli altri 13 marchi già presenti nella precedente graduatoria presentano fluttuazioni dei budget entro un intervallo del +/- 20%, che può dirsi contenuto se paragonato con i vertiginosi sbalzi all’insù o all’ingiù cui abbiamo assistito in passato. Fanno eccezione, ma non di molto, Tiffany & Co., che taglia un quarto del budget 2016, e Le Bebè, che lo decurta di un terzo. I marchi con una share of spending superiore all’1% sono 18, come nel 2016, e coprono i due terzi dell’intera spesa pubblicitaria del settore. Ai quattro che escono dal ranking – la coppia Damiani-Salvini, il redivivo Alfieri & St.John e Le Carose – subentrano dopo un anno sabbatico Amen, Rosato e Recarlo, cui si aggiunge Giovanni Raspini: tutti e quattro comparivano nelle posizioni immediatamente a ridosso della lista over 1% anche nella precedente rilevazione, a dimostrazione di una considerevole stabilità nelle politiche di comunicazione. La scansione mensile degli investimenti (Fig. 4) non evidenzia grandi sorprese nelle posizioni di vetta, tuttavia qualche marchio non presente in classifica è riuscito a rompere l’egemonia dei big e a primeggiare,

obtained only thanks to advertising on search engines, social media and You Tube and estimated with a survey involving 800 advertisers. Instead, if we focus on the traditional perimeter of monthly monitored media, investments show a decrease by 2.1%.

Obviously it is not a cataclysm, but a standstill when compared to the encouraging signs in the recent past. The same line is followed by the advertising revenue in the jewellery sector that registers -1.9%, corresponding to a little more of a million euros: the expense counter for advertising stopped at 58,852,000 Euros.

However, the sector survey does not include the highly growing web formats mentioned above, with which we could suppose that even the goldsmith sector would close evidencing slightly higher figures when compared to 2016, a sign that a recovery is finding some difficulties to start, but confidence has not been abandoned. Then, the latest investment report ended anticipating either a “consolidation” or a ”slight decrease”, and this is what happened. However, we can evidence the most remarkable discrepancy

between data concerning the goldsmith sector and the markets in general on the Internet, considering the information available mainly on display advertisement, that is banners. (Fig. 2): while all other product categories as a whole show a positive result equal to 1.8%, in the jewellery sector Internet evidences an abundant 8% contraction. Also the investments on cinema show a countertrend and a decrease: +2,4% as for the domestic data, -5% among precious items, although in both cases investments are now reduced to a minimum. The TV scenario is diametrically opposite evidencing a slight decrease on a national level and an increase greater than 8% in jewellery-custom jewels. In terms of percentage, the most remarkable increases concern the

external advertising, stable on a global level and increased by a third in our category sector, and on the radio that shows its extraordinary vitality and is able to attract any kind of advertisers with a surprising +5.4%, the best performance of the year. Among jewellers, despite the fact that it is not the most suitable medium due to obvious aesthetic reasons, it doubles and nearly triplicates its turnover, even if it proves to be modest. The press, instead, is evidencing some difficulties both in the general report and in the category one, with a decrease in newspapers and periodical ranging from 6% to 8% for the general markets and 15%20% and more for the jewellery category. As a value, the decrease of newspapers in the jewellery sector is compensated by the equivalent

sum, 900,000 Euros, obtained by the out of home, while the periodical one, 4,300,000 Euros, perfectly corresponds to the increase registered by radio and TV considered together. Against these variations, Television obtains the precise half of the advertising pie (Fig. 3), a share approaching the one registered on the whole national advertising market of which it owns 60% (excluding, as usual, search engines and social media). However, the most akin medium to jewellery is by far periodical press, whose share of advertising revenue, that in 2017 was around 30%, is four times higher than the one calculated on the other markets as a whole, below 7%. Other media with a high goldsmith concentration are external advertising and cinema, whose shares, though more marginal, represent a percentage of the advertising expense nearly double as compared to the national datum. Newspapers, with a 7.8% compared to 10.2%, and above all the Internet and radio are underrepresented: their 3% of the total jewellery budget is less than a half of the share that these channels represent on the total Italian advertising. Despite the decrease registered over the last year, the supremacy of magazines is confirmed by the number of users. The over 200 goldsmith brands that planned on periodicals are about double when compared to the advertisers in the second and third chosen medium, daily newspapers and Inter-

net respectively. Then follow external advertising, television, that, due to an economic reason, attracts a fifth of those companies, clients of periodicals and, finally, radio and cinema, this latter with less than ten users. Among these, Amen confirms as the most loyal, spending nearly two thirds of the whole sum paid from goldsmith companies to cinema circuits. Pandora, unequalled top spender, dominates on all other media except one, daily newspapers, where some more sophisticated brands with a media plan that seems to be a bit more eccentric than the most common practices, prevail. Giorgio Visconti, Pianegonda, Salvini that allocate their whole budget to newspapers, and Recarlo. It is worth evidencing the strong bent of Boccadamo for periodicals, with nearly a million euros, a little less than Pandora and of Sector for external advertising, with an all in of over 400,000 euros, even in this case just behind Pandora. Then Pandora it is the absolute leading brand in our rank, though the top companies as a whole seem to be irremovable (Figure 1) in fact the first five positions are held in the same order by the same five brands that had dominated the precious communication landscape in 2016 - beside Pandora, we can find Stroili, Morellato, Brosway and Swarovski – and also the three next placings have been obtained by the same brands the year before, the only difference being Kidult that, dou-

bling the budget, overtook its competitors Breil and S'Agapõ.

Apart from the brilliant performance of Mabina, the brand from Milan, almost all other 13 brands already present in the previous rank evidence budget fluctuations within a +/-20% range that can be considered as restricted when compared to the giddy ups and downs we saw in the past. An exception, even though a limited one, is represented by Tiffany & Co. that cut a quarter of its 2016 budget and LeBebè reducing it by a third. 18 brands evidence a share of spending higher than 1%, like in 2016, and account for the two thirds of the whole advertising expense in the sector.

After a sabbatical year, Amen, Rosato and Recarlo, complemented by Giovanni Raspini, replace the four brands leaving the ranking – the couple Damiani-Salvini, the restored to life Alfieri & St.John and Le Carose: all four held positions approaching the over 1% list also in the previous survey, showing a remarkable stability in the communication policies. The monthly monitoring of investments (Figure 4) does not evidence big surprises in the top positions, even though some brands not present in the ranking managed to break the hegemony and prevail despite the almost paltry investments, in the weakest advertising periods. This is the case of Fabiani that, besides ranking among the top brands in January, over the whole year has made a remarkable effort that has taken it close to 1%, obtaining the second place after Cartier among the companies excluded from the list, Spadarella and Rue des Mille, in the top position with only 38,000 euros for the neglected month of August (however, the latter also distinguished itself among the most loyal users of periodicals, besides being highly active on social media). Beside them, Pomellato, a brand not exactly new that, in the ranking, leaves space to its creature, Dodo, though conquering back some visibility in the back to school segment, focusing most of its investments in October. The trend of the globally higher investments made by Dodo resulted, instead, more uniform, without particular peaks, a choice also made by other numerous brands. In fact, as you can see in Figure 5, showing the fluctuation of monthly investments (technically the “variation coefficient” or “relative standard deviation), the distribution of resources over the year follows deeply different strategies from brand to brand, regardless of the budget amount. It is

the old quarrel between the idea of bursting (or flighting) and continuity, mainly referred to planning of TV spaces though also applicable to other media. Some brands favour a concentration of the advertising pressure in short though intense periods. Rosato and Giorgio Visconti are the champions of this doctrine: the former allocates 70% of its budget to TV commercials to be broadcast in December, and the rest are scattered over the remaining months; the latter invests 100% of its budget on printing press among November and December and after the blitz leaves the scene to reappear the following year in the same period. On the opposite side, instead, we find more formal brands privileging a continuous approach and an allocation of spaces distributed over time, consisting in pulses and periods of silence, or of persevering and regular dropping.

Recarlo, Giovanni Raspini, Amen, Tiffany & Co. and Dodo decidedly favour this planning style, placing themselves below the average fluctuation of goldsmith advertising investments that, over the last three years has always registered 90-95% communicating more frequently though never raising their voice: Recarlo, for example, breaks down the investment allocating each month a share ranging from 1.5% and 15% of the total amount with a minimum of 11,000 and a maximum of 110.000 euros, not a decimal more. The same with Giovanni Raspini, present every month without exceeding 18% of its investment.

Regardless of the winning technique, it is better not to make any prevision for the current year. The first quarter of 2018 ended with a discomforting -28% when compared to the same period in 2017, but the first three months of 2016 promised outstanding results with a roaring +60% when compared to the previous year, as well evidenced in Figure 6. Then things went as we all know. The game is still to be played.

Come di consueto, la fiera ha attratto retailer e top buyer internazionali alla ricerca di novità e tendenze in fatto di gemme, tagli, materiali e stili. Cospicua la presenza della gioielleria italiana - rappresentata da una quarantina di marchi - che ha riscosso consensi per creatività e gusto e grande successo per la serata di premiazione dei prestigiosi Couture Design Awards. Novità in vista per la partecipazione delle aziende italiane: a partire dall'anno prossimo sarà Ieg a svolgere le attività di talent scouting e agente nazionale per la manifestazione. n Creative, original, perfectionist: over two hundred high jewellery and new designer brands coming from all over the world met last June for the Couture Las Vegas show at Wynn Resort. As usual, the exhibition attracted international retailers and top buyers looking for novelties and trends as for gems, cutting, materials and style. The large attendance of Italian jewellery - represented by forty brands - obtained approvals for creativity and taste while the evening gala of the prestigious Couture Design Awards met with great success. n'edizione non memorabile ma neppure disastrosa: Jck Las Vegas 2018, svoltasi agli inizi di giugno al Mandalay Bay, si è svolto secondo le aspettative e del resto la situazione politica ed economica a livello mondiale non è delle migliori. Diversi espositori sottolineano una minore affluenza dei visitatori e defezioni importanti tra i grandi retailer americani, chiarendo al tempo stesso che la fiera resta comunque la principale finestra sul mercato americano per le aziende di fascia media, che non possono contare su una propria rete di partner e distributori; e quello americano è un mercato di peso, che da sempre assorbe una fetta consistente della gioielleria e dell'oreficeria made in Italy. La maggior parte delle aziende italiane si sono presentate come di consueto raccolte nell'esposizione collettiva curata da VicenzaOro-Ieg, in attesa della prossima edizione che si preannuncia ricca di cambiamenti. Come è noto, infatti, Ieg sarà organizzatore diretto del Padiglione italiano di Premier, nuova manifestazione di Emerald Expositions Llc (Eex) in programma presso il Las Vegas Convention Center dal 31 Maggio al 4 Giugno, in concomitanza con Agta GemFair Las Vegas e Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show. Jck Las Vegas continuerà invece a essere organizzata e curata da Reed Exhibitions, che ne ha annunciato lo svolgimento dall'1 al 4 Giugno presso il Venetian/ Palazzo and Sands Convention Center recentemente ristrutturato. n A neither memorable nor disastrous edition: Jck Las Vegas 2018, held at the beginning of June at Mandalay Bay, went on according to expectations. In fact, as it is known, Ieg will be the direct organizer of the Italian Pavilion at Premier, the new exhibition of Emerald Expositions Llc (Eex) to be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from 31st May to 4th June, in parallel with Agta Gemfair Las Vegas and Las Vegas Antique Jewellery & Watch Show, nearly overlapping with Couture.

dalla fine di maggio che diluviano polemiche: dal prossimo settembre, ha annunciato il colosso anglo-sudafricano De Beers, la Lightbox Jewelry (società recentemente costituita ad hoc) immetterà sul mercato (inizialmente online, direttamente rivolgendosi al consumatore finale) gioielleria montata con diamanti sintetici bianchi, rosa e blu, "di qualità da gemma”, esclusivamente prodotti dalla Element Six, il “braccio sintetico” della stessa De Beers. Costi: $ 200 per uno dei cotal diamanti da 0,25 ct da incastonarsi su d’un pezzo di gioielleria Lightbox; $ 400 per uno da 0,50 ct; $ 600 per uno da 0,75 ct e $ 800 per uno da 1,00 ct. Prezzi eguali per ognuno dei suaccennati colori. Tutte le pietre dai 0,20 ct in su porteranno l’indelebile marchio Element Six, visibile solo al microscopio, inscritto al loro interno. Permettete che a più d’un produttore di sintetico abbia preso un colpo: a fronte dei 4.000 $/ct per un diamante sintetico da 1,00 ct (e agli 8.000 $/ ct per un similare naturale), gli 800 $ di quello targato E6 possono significare una sola cosa: inversioni a U sui prezzi o campane a morto. Non vi dico gli alti lai. E le accuse alla De Beers di voler sempre praticare politiche monopolistiche, ora anche nel campo del sintetico, dopo aver per anni rassicurato circa le proprie intenzioni di confinare la produzione al mero utilizzo industriale e la ricerca alla sola messa a punto di strumentazione atta a meglio identificare sintetico da naturale e correlati trattamenti. Un’invasione di campo, urlano adirati, per porre fuori gioco buona parte dei concorrenti. E chi disporrà, tra i “piccoli” produttori – lamentano – della potenza di fuoco che il titano DB sarà in grado di schierare in linea per le campagne di marketing? E chi ce la farà a tener testa ai 500.000 carati di produzione annua di grezzo previsti per il nuovo impianto E6 di Portland, Oregon, una volta che, nel 2020, questi opererà a pieno regime con presse concentrate su una superficie di ben 5.575 m2 – impianto che s’affiancherà a quelli di Santa Clara e Houston (Usa) e di Maidenhead (Uk)? Hai voglia a dire che questi ultimi continueranno a sfornare sintetico industriale e che sarà soltanto l’Oregon ad alimentare in esclusiva la Lightbox. I conti non tornano,

insinuano: se col prossimo settembre arriveranno online i primi lotti di gioie Lightbox, e l’opificio di Portland verrà completato ad agosto 2019 (al costo di 94 milioni di dollari), da qualche altra parte il sintetico “industriale” s’è già trasmutato in “gemma”, o no?

Che prima o poi Mamma DB dovesse metter piede nel sintetico “da gemma” era da tempo nell’aria. Basta rileggersi quanto pronosticato dal guru del diamante Martin Rapaport nel suo Rapaport Diamond Report, Vol.26, n° 37, 30 ottobre 2003. Chi ci rimetterà la ghirba, profetizzano altri, sarà la miriade di tagliatori indiani di pietre di piccola taglia e di qualità inferiore che alimenta la produzione, pure indiana, di gioielleria di fascia bassa che perderà il suo allure a fronte dei più attraenti (per prezzo ed estetica) manufatti della Lightbox. E che dire dei dettaglianti, bypassati e spinti in un cul de sac da Mamma DB? Solo fra qualche anno si saprà se le Cassandre avranno bene interpretato le loro visioni. Potrebbe anche darsi che, per contro-ribattere i bassi prezzi, ci si rifugi sotto le ali del Dragone Cinese o tra i geli siberiani di Novosibirsk, ove tecnologie d’ottimo livello e bassi costi di manodopera possono far la differenza. C’è chi invece saluta festosamente la svolta della DB, col dire (avvalorando, di quella, le asserite motivazioni a supporto del proprio agire) che i più bassi prezzi del sintetico apriranno più vasti orizzonti di vendita, in ispecie tra i millennials, meno inclini a lasciarsi sedurre dal mito del “diamante per sempre”; più propensi a economizzare, a parità d’apparenza, a favorire prodotti considerati più “verdi” (e le enormi quantità d’energia bruciate nella manifattura del sintetico?). Col dire che il diamante naturale verrà ancor più apprezzato. Col dire che (cito papale papale il Rapaport di cui sopra, ripescato per l'occasione e fatto oracolo) «alla fine, un grande mercato si svilupperà su due livelli: indubbiamente il diamante naturale e sintetico coesisteranno fianco a fianco, condividendo un mercato della gioielleria con diamanti in rapida crescita». E c’è chi esulta, vedendo avvicinarsi l'ora delle certificazioni cosiddette etiche. Chi vivrà vedrà.

A look abroad and forward See Page 45 Marco Carniello entered the world of jewels and Fiera of Vicenza only two yeas ago. He is the young director of the Jewellery & Fashion Department of IEG and he is already able to outline a realistic picture of this sector.

«I came from different experiences - he explains – though the kind of approach I had developed in the company consultancy allowed me to learn fast the dynamics of the precious sector». Were you surprised by the situation you found?

«I must admit I wasn’t. I realised that in this sector, like in many others, entrepreneurial projects developing creativity, production, distribution, marketing and 360° brand communication exist alongside an artisan culture, with an industrial character, focused on manufacturing.

And this both in Italy and abroad. It is therefore a stimulating panorama for the excellent development perspectives of many companies that, so far, have been mainly focused on manufacturing aspects and that are opening to more complex projects». Did you evidence any criticality?

«It is a complex sector, though not more complex than others that, in the past, had a great success and were then obliged to downsize, loosing many units. Over the last five years, though, the situation has been changing and evolving in a positive way». The Fiera of Vicenza is by definition a champion of Made in Italy, though IEG has wider and more international dynamics. which is the role of the goldsmith sector in the strategic vision of the Group? «Ieg focuses on the strong sectors of Italian manufacturing, like goldware and jewellery, but an event able to introduce itself to the whole world cannot simply offer Made in Italy as international buyers, though extremely interested in the Italian product, want to see also something else. In order to be competitive on at least a continental scale, the offer must be global.

Fiera of Vicenza, in fact, is growing as a showcase for the best Italian and International product; the selected foreign attendance does not take away value to the Made in Italy, but it complements it making it more attractive for buyers». What kind of impact will the widening of the exhibition space that has recently been announced have on the jewellery exhibitions? «The idea is to take also the infrastructure of VicenzaOro to the same quality level of the most modern and international exhibition districts, not in a scenographic sense, but in a functional one for exhibitors and visitors alike, so as to be allowed to grow also in those areas that, today, we believe are limited due to unavailable spaces. I am talking about sectors that we already control (from the unbranded product to fashion jewellery) and to which pavilions 4 and 2 are dedicated, but should need more breadth. They are both Italian and foreign companies we consider strategic like gem dealers and some foreign brands of high range and custom jewel items we know have a great interest for our visitors». Ieg also organises

Oroarezzo. Which are, and will be, the synergies and distinctions between the exhibition held in Vicenza and the one in Tuscany?

«Oroarezzo will increasingly focus on Italian unbranded jewellery and on such a target as operators connected to wholesale distribution or, in any case, to the marketing of jewels sold by volumes. Vicenzaoro, instead, will continue to represent the whole supply chain (from gems, to brand jewels) for any kind of operators, from wholesalers to retailers. This distinctive model is already proving rewarding as the latest editions of both events went well».

Which novelties or changes should we expect from the recently signed partnership with Emerald Expositions (EEX) that organizes, among other events, Couture Las Vegas? «The US are one of our most important destination markets and this agreement will allow us to increase our reach in this area. Moreover, the operational start of such partnership coincides with the launch of Premier, a trade event Eex had been working on for several years and that will open during the Last Vegas Market Week from 31st May to 4th June 2019. The event will be held, along with Las Vegas Antique Jewelry and Watch Show and AGTA GemFair, at the Last Vegas Convention Center focusing on a high quality jewellery, watchmaking and custom jewel offer, with a more affordable entry price when compared to what on display in the Couture Show stands. Then, we will have the double opportunity to propose both the very high range with Couture and the unbranded jewellery with Premier. This launch on the American market actually allows us to speak with all the most important players in this sector, ensuring our companies

the organisation attention and prestige Couture has also in the unbranded sector. Within the Premier event, our Italian pavilion will have a first rank position: we can say, without exaggerating, that we will be the stars of the initiative and we will give Italian manufacturing maximum visibility». Such initiatives realise the phases of a positioning and development project announced after Ieg was established. Will the future confirm the set guide lines or different paths from those originally traced are to be expected? «Strategies are set and by their own nature must evolve, implement, improve, adjust keeping pace with the very fast speed of the market. Today we are a company looking at the Stock Exchange and we have it clear that the client is at the centre of our business. The US operations, as the interventions on the exhibition district of Vicenza, the launch of a digital policy that had never been approached before with a true concreteness and an orchestration of knowledge prove it». A few words on Vicenzaoro September that presents two new sections dedicated to watches and designers. «We have long been working on medium level watches (with a price range between 500 and 3000 euros) and this year we have decided to offer a tangible expression of this product area in the Watch room within the Community Look, dedicated to Fashion Jewellery, as we believe it is the closest to the context in which these timepieces find their place. As for designers, instead, we will give more visibility to high jewellery brands characterised by a very strong identity but little or very little distributed that will help us to widen the offer for our buyer, beside opening an important window on future jewellery trends, an issue our show holds dear».

With her brothers Maurizio, marketing manager, Valerio, product manager, and riccardo, a university student, Beatrice Beleggia represents the second generation of the Beleggia's family, owner of the Bros manifatture Group. How did you join the company? Since I was a young girl I have spent my summers in the various departments, observing the workers creating wrist straps, small cases, jewels, or looking at magazines to understand the world of periodicals and newspapers. Was it a useful experience? It was fundamental to understand the various production stages and, above all, to internalize the respect for work we have always been taught by our father. Which is, today, your role within the company? I am responsible for communication, public relations and also of Bros USA whose headquarters are in Miami. Which project or campaign do you remember as being particularly satisfactory? Certainly, the Brosway About You tour, with our staff in the discos all over Italy looking for young people who could best interpret the Brosway world: and the recent night fashion show with models wearing Pianegonda jewels in the presence of 200 top clients and of the international press, in the splendid Officina del Sole, our family’s wine resort. How did the Group develop into its current structure? My father established his first business, a manufacturing of wrist straps for high range watches in 1979; in 2002 he entered the world of fashion jewels with Brosway and in 2008 s'agapò, a fast fashion jewellery brand was created; the acquisitions of rosato, fine jewellery, and Pianegonda, contemporary design jewellery, took place in 2011 and 2015. No cannibalisation, then? No, every brand has its own peculiarities, its selected target, its own communication. Which projects are you working on? We are developing the US and Chinese markets, with on site stores and partners as well as an on line distribution. The manufacturing site has always remained in the Marche region. How much does the bond with the territory mean to your family? A lot. We were born in a wonderful region whose beauty and history inspired us. We try to return what we have received taking back to life neglected structures or contributing to the restoration of cultural treasures. You are also very active on the charity front... We have grown up knowing that helping those in need and defending the weakest, children, women and the sick is normal.

Which is your most beautiful dream? I have a lot of dreams...Thinking of a concrete goal, I wish I could continue with my brothers what my father did; and one day I wish he would be proud of our team work.

It has been bucketing down since the end of May: De Beers, the Anglo-South African corporation, has announced that, starting from next September the Lightbox Jewelry (a recently ad hoc established company) will launch on the market (initially on line, directly addressing the final consumer) jewelry (including earrings and necklaces) set with “gem quality" pink, blue and white synthetic diamonds, exclusively produced by Element Six, that is the "synthetic arm" of the same De Beers.

Costs: $ 200 for one of such 0.25 ct diamonds to be set on a Lightbox jewellery item, $ 400 for a 0.50 ct one, $ 600 for 0.75 ct and $ 800 for 1 ct.

The same prices for each of the above mentioned colours. All the stones from 0.20 ct on will show the indelible Element Six trademark, only visible under the microscope, permanently engraved inside.

You would certainly understand the fact that, at this point, more than a manufacturer of synthetic items felt the blow: against 4,000 dollars/ct for 1 ct synthetic diamond (and 8,000 $/ct for a similar natural one), 800 $ paid for the E6 stone can mean only one thing: U turns on prices or death bells. Not to mention the high lays. Along with the accusations to DB of always trying to follow monopolistic practices, now also in the synthetic sector, after reassuring, for years, about its intention to limit its own production to the mere industrial use and its own research to the implementation of instruments meant to better identify synthetic items from natural ones, as well as the relative treatments. An improper pitch invasion, they shout enraged, meant to knock most competitors out. And who will have, among the “small” manufacturers - they complain – the fire power that the DB titan will be able to deploy for marketing campaigns? And who will be able to stand up to the 500,000 carat production a year of raw materials envisaged for the new E6 plant in Portland, Oregon – once that, in 2020, it will fully operate with presses concentrated on a 5,575 square meter surface, a plant that will add to the ones in Santa Clara (California) and Houston (Texas), in the US, and Maidenhead (UK)? There is no use in repeating that these latter will continue to produce industrial synthetic items and only Oregon will exclusively feed the beloved Lightbox. Ends are not matching, they insinuate: if next September the first lots of Lightbox jewels will be launched on line and the Portland plant will have been completed by August 2019 (for 94 million dollars), somewhere else the "industrial" synthetic has already turned into "gem", or may be not? And, by the way, despite the repeated denials, the possibility that sooner or later Mother DB would enter the “gem” synthetic sector has long been in the air. Just

read the predictions of the diamond guru Martin Rapaport in his Rapaport Diamond Report, Vol.26, n 37 dated of 30 October 2003. But these are just minor details, someone would say. Some others prophesy that those who are not going to save their skin are the multitude of Indian cutters of small size and lower quality stones feeding the production, Indian again, of low range jewellery that will lose its allure against the most attractive (for both price and appearance) Lightbox artefacts. Not to mention retailers at large, by-passed and pushed in a cul de sac by Mother DB. Well, a load of jeremiads. Only in a few years we will know if Cassandras will have well interpreted their visions of the future. Maybe, to contrast the low price that can be obtained thanks to high productions deriving from technological drives, we will find protection under the wings of the Chinese Dragon or among the Siberian chills of Novosibirsk where high level technologies combined with low labour costs can still make the difference.

Anyway, someone, instead, is merrily celebrating the age turning point of DB, saying that (and then strengthening its claimed reasons supporting its actions) the lower prices of synthetic items will open wider sale horizons, particularly among the so called millennials, that remarkable share of consumers who became adult between the twentieth and the twenty-first century, less prone to be seduced by the myth of "a diamond is forever", from the charm of expensive items; more likely to save up, for the same appearance, to privilege products that are considered "greener", more "eco-friendly" (if that were true: and what are we supposed to do with the huge quantities of energy wasted in the manufacturing of synthetic items?) This will mean that natural diamonds, for those still able to afford them – will be even more appreciated. This will mean (I am quoting verbatim) “in the end, a big market will develop on two levels: natural and synthetic diamonds will obviously coexist side by side, sharing a rapidly growing diamond jewellery market”. Some are celebrating as, in this ongoing process, they see approaching, the unavoidable advent of the so called ethical certifications. Time will tell.
