laura volpi unique pieces I gioielli della designer milanese sono vere e proprie sculture indossabili, frutto di un'approfondita ricerca sui materiali e di accurate tecniche di lavorazione Scenografa e scultrice - vanta tra l’altro una collaborazione di anni con Arnaldo Pomodoro - Laura Volpi è un’artista milanese che, come spiega lei stessa, si è avvicinata al mondo del gioiello «per sperimentare la scultura in una dimensione indossabile». Le sue creazioni sono realizzate a mano, come pezzi unici o in piccole serie, e frutto di una ricerca incessante su materiali, tecniche di lavorazione, finiture. Dalla collaborazione col designer tessile francese Côme Touvay è nato il bracciale Duetto (in basso a sinistra), in cui gli elementi in argento creati da Laura come fotogrammi e ispirati alla fotografia del movimento di Eadweard Muybridge sono tessuti e fermati nel tessuto, integrando con la trama il senso di movimento. ■ Set designer and sculptor – she has been working for many years with Arnaldo Pomodoro, among others – Laura Volpi is a Milanese artist who, as she herself explains, approached the world of jewellery «to experiment with sculpture in a wearable way». Her creations are handmade, as unique pieces or in small series, and the result of her constant study of materials, processing techniques and finishes.

Her collaboration with French textile designer Côme Touvay resulted in the Duetto bracelet (below, left), where the silver elements created by Laura as still images and inspired by Eadweard Muybridge’s motion photography are woven and framed in the fabric, integrating a sense of movement into the weave.

I partecipanti esporranno le loro creazioni dal 22 al 25 febbraio a Palazzo dei Giureconsulti a Milano, in occasione della settimana della moda. Tutti gli artisti presenti vedranno le loro opere pubblicate nel volume Artistar Jewels 2018 edito da Logo Fausto Lupetti. ■ The usual venue with Artistar Jewels and the contemporary jewel will be back again. amin luxury memory code L'azienda fiorentina ha siglato un accordo con HRD per la certificazione delle gemme in cui verrà inciso un codice a barre contenente la "carta d'identità" della gemma Un altro milestone per Amin Luxury, l’azienda fiorentina specializzata nella fornitura di diamanti che ha brevettato il Leonardo da Vinci Cut, elaborato sulla base della proporzione aurea, e ha concluso negli anni scorsi importanti accordi con GIA e con un sightholder De Beers per assicurarsi le migliori pietre sul mercato. È recentissimo, inoltre, l’accordo con HRD, uno dei più accreditati istituti internazionali di diamond grading, per la certificazione delle gemme in cui verrà inciso il memory code (un codice a barre che consente di risalire alla “carta d’identità” della pietra), una tecnica esclusiva di Amin Luxury che consente anche di inserire nel codice cifrato un video-messaggio. cibjo in bangkok La capitale thailandese ha ospitato l'annuale congresso mondiale della gioielleria con un panel di 150 delegati internazionali di alto livello e oltre 300 partecipanti «La Thailandia è il centro gravitazionale di importanti mercati per il settore dell’oro e dei gioielli, soprattutto per quanto riguarda l’estrazione e il taglio delle pietre di colore, di cui il paese è ricco - spiega Gaetano Cavalieri alla fine dell’annuale congresso Cibjo (Confederazione mondiale della gioielleria) di cui è presidente - Negli ultimi 20 anni, inoltre, la produzione locale di prodotti finiti è molto migliorata e diverse aziende europee, anche italiane, vi stanno trasferendo i loro laboratori. Ecco perché quest’anno abbiamo scelto Bangkok come città ospite del congresso e sono molto soddisfatto del risultato». Le ragioni della sua soddisfazione sono molteplici: oltre alla piacevolezza della location, l’hotel Shangri-La lungo il fiume Chao Praya, la gentilezza della popolazione e la profusione di orchidee dappertutto, il panel di 150 delegati internazionali è risultato di livello molto elevato, come hanno potuto valutare gli oltre 300 partecipanti all’evento.

Argomento focale dell’incontro, preceduto dal primo Forum mondiale del Rubino, è stata la responsabilità sociale e la sostenibilità della filiera produttiva, dalla miniera al gioiello finito, soprattutto nel campo delle gemme di colore.

This is why this year we chose Bangkok to host the conference and we are very satisfied about the results». There are many reasons for satisfaction. Besides the pleasant location of the event, the Shangri-La hotel along the Chao Praya river, the kindness of the population and the profusion of orchids everywhere, the panel of 150 delegates from all over the world turned out to be of a very high level, as the over 300 people taking part in the event were able to see. The focus of the event – preceded by the first World Ruby Forum – was social responsibility and sustainability of the production chain, from the mine to the finished jewel, especially in the field of coloured gems.

The cable made of interwoven gold wires, lending shape to Yurman’s most typical jewellery, embodies the essence of this designer who succeeded in making himself known in America with the simplicity of his design, inspired by technological cables and the cabling on Brooklyn Bridge. Launched in 1980 in New York, the David Yurman brand is born from the contamination between the sculptural creativity of its homologous founder and the artistic flair of his wife Sybil. Partners in life and in work, the two have opened the way towards an unconventional, elegant style, uniting artistic inspirations and craftsmanship with diamonds, pearls and precious gemstones. A style based on the simplicity of its leitmotif, the cable, conveyed not only in the iconic stiff bracelet in gold but also in rings, earrings, watches and later on also in the silver version.

Its collections are on sale in 47 sales points in the United States, Canada, France and the Middle East but from now on will arrive throughout the world thanks to the book entitled David Yurman Cable by the two founders, with the contribution of Paul Greenhalgh, William Norwich and Carine Roitfeld, and published by Rizzoli New York. ei suoi 130 anni di vita Eberhard & Co. ha attraversato la Belle Epoque, i due conflitti mondiali, la Grande Depressione, il Boom economico, i turbolenti anni Settanta e la globalizzazione degli ultimi decenni: il tutto senza mai interrompere la propria attività, fatto non comune tra le maison europee. Fondata nel 1887, la Manifattura è celebre per la creazione di veri e propri capolavori e oggi festeggia l'anniversario con edizioni dedicate e il volume L'arte di sfidare il tempo, scritto da Giosuè Boetto Cohen per Rizzoli. Il libro ripercorre l'evoluzione del marchio, da piccolo laboratorio a manifattura di spicco fornitrice dei migliori negozi in tutto il mondo, ponendo al centro del racconto le storie di tre uomini eccezionali - Mario Rossetto, Publio Magini e Tazio Nuvolari - i cui destini hanno in qualche modo incrociato gli orologi della maison. ■ In 130 years of activity, Eberhard & Co. has gone through the Belle Epoque, the two world wars, the Great Depression, the economic boom, the Turbulent Seventies and the globalisation of the last decades; all without ever stopping their business, uncommon fact among European companies. affair Da 71 anni le catene prodotte dall'azienda Alessi Domenico sono un caposaldo della locale area produttiva. E oggi la quarta generazione è pronta a prendere il timone

ra la piccola bottega artigiana e l’odierno stabilimento di 10 mila metri quadrati molta acqua è passata sotto il famoso ponte di legno di Bassano del Grappa, progettato da Andrea Palladio. A parlarci della Domenico Alessi fondata dal bisnonno nel 1946, anno d’oro in cui gran parte del mondo orafo Made in Italy ha preso il volo, è Filippo Alessi, 34 anni e già tre figli, quarta generazione in azienda, che con dinamismo e spirito di iniziativa guida assieme al padre le strategie aziendali come amministratore delegato sia in Italia sia in Giordania, dove l’impresa ha uno stabilimento dedicato ad altre divisioni di prodotti di gioielleria finita. A Bassano invece, dal 1946, è concentrata la produzione di catene, come da tradizione locale. Da 71 anni sempre e solo catene in oro, senza volontà di branding e anzi con una spiccata vocazione al semilavorato da fornire ai produttori per il montaggio e la personalizzazione delle collezioni. E di catene, gli Alessi, non sembrano affatto stanchi. Ma quando il nonno Aldo ha visto che erano gli italiani a cominciare a stancarsi del prodotto, ha preso la valigia, ci ha infilato tutto il suo coraggio ed è partito alla conquista dei mercati stranieri. Nonostante il poco inglese, che due generazioni fa era un esotismo da classi aristocratiche, è riuscito ad affermare e far crescere la Domenico Alessi con risultati di successo, un esempio per tutto il distretto. «Il nostro è tuttora un prodotto basico, che vendiamo al grande grossista, a sua volta fornitore di negozi o altri, più piccoli, grossisti. Soprattutto in Giordania abbiamo avviato anche collaborazioni con produttori di gioielleria finita, vendendo elementi modulari che si possono assemblare». Nelle parole di Filippo l'Orafo 2018

la famiglia resta il valore primario, coesivo e propulsivo per tutti i progetti futuri. «Il mio bisnonno aveva avviato un laboratorio terzista in cui lavorava già il figlio Aldo. Il quale successivamente è stato promotore del salto alla dimensione industriale, presto aiutato dai cinque figli (un primogenito e due coppie di gemelli), che hanno sempre lavorato insieme. Poi una schiera di nipoti, tutti indirizzati a una ferrea gavetta prima di entrare, se meritevoli, nel business familiare». Filippo ha acquisito tutte le sue conoscenze sul campo, cominciando dalla falciatrice d’erba in giardino, senza Master MBA e Università straniere, anzi smettendo di studiare dopo le medie superiori. «Ma insisto molto con mio fratello più giovane perché prosegua gli studi e acquisisca nuove competenze, perché oggi bisogna saper competere su tutti i fronti. Della produzione si occupa ancora mio padre e per la creatività c’è un team interno, perché da sempre miriamo a valorizzare le risorse umane cresciute con noi». Nonostante la giovane età, Filippo mantiene un buon dialogo con il passato, che secondo lui è stato seppellito troppo in fretta. «Il mio obiettivo a lungo termine è legato al gruppo, vorrei fare anche qualche passo indietro, recuperando lavorazioni antiche che abbiamo nel tempo lasciato e che invece fanno parte del nostro territorio. La nostra è una realtà da scoprire e riscoprire, perché conserviamo valori unici in Italia. Aziende come la nostra, delle nostre dimensioni pur conservando la gestione familiare, si contano oggi sulle dita di una mano. In Italia oggi dovremmo riuscire a valorizzare questo tessuto di solide imprese familiari, in cui i valori sono legati alle persone, dai vertici fino all’ultimo degli 38

In order to introduce Domenico Alessi, founded by his great grandfather in 1946, golden year when most of the Made in Italy goldsmith world took flight, we talked with Filippo Alessi, 34 years old and already three children, fourth generation in Domenico Alessi that , with his father, runs with dynamism and initiative the company strategies as Managing Director both in Italy and in Jordan, where the company opened a plant dedicated to other product departments of finished jewellery. The production of chains, as for a local tradition, has been concentrated in Bassano since 1946. Since 71 years always and only gold chains, with no ambition of branding and, instead, a marked vocation to semi-finished items to supply to the manufacturers for the setting and customisations of collections. And the Alessi family doesn't seem to have got tired of chains. But when grandfather Aldo realised that Italians got tired with the product, took his suitcase, put all his courage in it and left to conquer foreign markets. Despite the fact that he could speak a very little English, which two generations ago was an exoticism for aristocrats, he managed to establish and grow Domenico Alessi with very positive results, an example for the whole district. «We still manufacture a basic product sold to big wholesalers that are, at their turn, suppliers of shops or other smaller wholesalers. Mainly in Jordan we started some collaborations with finished jewellery producers, selling modular elements that can be assembled». In the words spoken by Filippo his family remains the primary, cohesive and propulsive value for all future projects. «My great grandfather started a contractor workshop where his son Aldo already worked. Then, Aldo favoured the passage to an industrial level, soon helped by his five children (his eldest son and two couples of twins) who have always worked together. Then, a number of grandchildren followed, all working their way up before joining, if worthy of it, the family business ».

Filippo acquired his knowledge in the field, starting from the lawnmower in the garden, with no MBA Master and foreign Universities, but leaving his studies after secondary schools. «However I strongly insist with my younger brother that he continues studying and acquires new expertise, as today you must be able to compete on many fronts. My father still supervises the manufacturing, while our in house team is in charge of creativity, as we have always aimed at valorising the human resources grown with us». Despite his young age, Filippo maintains a good connection with the past that, according to him, was buried too fast. «My long term aim is linked to the group, I would also like to make some steps backwards, recovering ancient workings that we have long abandoned and that, instead, belong to our territory. Our reality is to be discovered and rediscovered as we keep values that are unique in Italy. Today, companies like ours, with our size though still family run, can be counted on one hand. Today in Italy we should be able to valorise the fabric of strong family companies, whose values are connected to people, from the management to the last worker, as this is our peculiarity and our strength». l'Orafo 2018

er Giovanni Raspini la vita è una sorta di Wunderkammer, quelle antiche "camere delle meraviglie" - che in effetti tanto lo affascinano - allestite per stupire i visitatori, traboccanti di cose mirabili, naturali o artificiali (Mirabilia, Naturalia et Artificialia), tanto più stupefacenti perché esposte senza alcuna pretesa di ordine o metodo. Sorprendere e farsi sorprendere è una vera gioia per questo argentiere toscano, architetto per formazione e proveniente da una famiglia di antiquari, appassionato collezionista di argenti antichi fin dagli anni dell'università. «A un certo punto ho seguito questa passione e ho deciso di dedicarmi alle creazioni in argento, un materiale che ancora oggi, a distanza di tanti anni, mi diverte e l'Orafo 2018

mi intriga perché coi suoi riflessi, i suoi chiaroscuri, i suoi rilievi e anche le ossidazioni è perfetto non solo per creare oggetti e gioielli bellisssimi ma anche per restituire quel dualismo che è parte fondamentale della nostra esistenza: chiaro e scuro, vuoto e pieno, abbondanza e privazione, vita e morte: in fondo, quello che siamo e che potremmo o vorremmo essere». Il tema, di per sé serissimo, è al centro dell'ultima collezione di Giovanni Raspini, di un volume e di una mostra che si è svolta a Milano, dal titolo a suo modo programmatico: "Vanitas Mundi. Una danza macabra fra ironia, glamour, gotico e kitsch". Qui la Vanitas medievale si traduce in putti, scorpioni, teschi e scheletri, ratti, pipistrelli e serpenti che ornano con ironia oggetti e gioielli davvero 40

sorprendenti, tanto eccessivi da risultare simpatici: strappano un sorriso con i loro ghigni, le smorfie, le acconciature improbabili, le pellicce e le squame dall'impressionante realismo. «Mi piace immaginare l'esagerazione e mi piace l'eccesso: mi sono divertito con questa collezione. Detto questo, quando penso a un gioiello penso sempre con grande rispetto alla donna che lo indosserà: tutto quello che realizziamo in azienda è realizzato secondo le più nobili tradizioni, con la fusione a cera persa e rigorosamente a mano. Al di là della filosofia, la qualità è davvero uno degli elementi distintivi del nostro lavoro. Dirò di più, in questi nostri giorni fatti di "apparire" è necessario ribadire che la qualità è un dato oggettivo, reale, riconosciuto peraltro dai nostri clienti che chiedono cose belle, di sostanza, accurate e creative, che poi sono le caratteristiche del vero Made in Italy».

Altro tratto distintivo della produzione di Giovanni Raspini è l'ispirazione a elementi organici come foglie, piante, conchiglie, animali. «Quello che trovo affascinante sono i particolari, quei particolari che in un oggetto piccolo come un gioiello diventano fondamentali. Se penso alla natura non mi interessa tanto la grazia di un fiore o la tenerezza che sa suscitare un animale ma piuttosto far risaltare la texture delle foglie, il pelo di una pelliccia, la perfezione delle squame, tutti elementi che i chiaroscuri dell'argento sanno rendere perfettamente. Invece non trovo grande ispirazione nel colore: e infatti uso pochissime pietre, di cui peraltro non sono un conoscitore abbastanza esperto, e pochissimi smalti». Da tanti anni presente sul mercato - il piccolo laboratorio argentiero delle origini si è trasformato nel tempo nell'attuale azienda con una sessantina di dipendenti e 15 monomarca con due nuove aperture già programmate - Giovanni Raspini è stato testimone dell'evoluzione del concetto stesso di gioiello nel nostro Paese: «Una volta il "gioiello" era considerato tale solo se in oro e ornato di pietre, nel corso degli ultimi decenni sono stati rivalutati tutti i metalli e i materiali più diverl'Orafo 2018

si. Una rivoluzione che personalmente mi trova assolutamente d'accordo perché penso che il gioiello sia quello che è sempre stato fin dalla preistoria: molto semplicemente, un ornamento personale, di qualsiasi genere e natura». ■ For Giovanni Raspini life is a sort of Wunderkammer, those ancient “wondrous rooms” - that effectively fascinate him so much - arranged to amaze visitors, overflowing with marvellous, natural or artificial things (Mirabilia, Naturalia et Artificialia), even more amazing because displayed without any idea of order and method. To surprise and be made surprised is a real joy for this Tuscan silversmith, an architect by profession and coming from a family of antique dealers, impassioned collector of ancient silverware right from his university years. «At a certain point I pursued this passion and decided to dedicate myself to creations in silver, a material that still today, after so many years, amuses and intrigues me because with its reflections, its chiaroscuro, reliefs and even

oxidations it is not only perfect to create extremely beautiful objects and jewellery but also to render that kind of dualism that is an essential part of our existence: light and shade, full and empty, abundance and privation, life and death: in the end, what we are and what we could or would like to be». The theme, in itself a very serious one, is at the centre of Giovanni Raspini’s latest collection, of a book and an exhibition held in Milan, with a title in a way programmatic: "Vanitas Mundi. A Dance Macabre between irony, glamour, Gothic and kitsch". Here the medieval Vanitas is interpreted by cherubs, scorpions, skulls and skeletons, rats, bats and snakes decorating with irony truly surprising objects and jewels, so excessive as to even be nice: they force you to smile at their sardonic grins, grimaces, improbable hairdos, furs and scales of striking realism. «I like to imagine exaggeration and I like the excess and I really enjoyed myself with this collection. Having said this, when I think of a jewel I always think about the woman who will wear it with great respect: all that is created by us in the business is done by following the noblest of traditions, with the lost wax fusion and strictly by hand. Over and above the concept, quality is really one of the factors to distinguish our work. I would even say, in our present day made of “appearance” it must be stressed that quality is an objective fact, real and anyhow recognized by our customers who want beau-

tiful things, of substance, precise and creative, which are anyhow the features of the true Made in Italy».

Another distinctive trait in Giovanni Raspini’s production is the inspiration taken from organic elements such as leaves, plants, shells and animals. «What I find so fascinating are the details, those details that in a small object like a jewel become essential. When I think of nature I’m not so interested in the grace of a flower or tenderness aroused by an animal but rather in highlighting the texture of leaves, the hairs of a fur, the perfection of scales, all elements perfectly rendered by the chiaroscuro of silver. Whilst I am not very inspired by colour: in fact I use very few gemstones, in any case I am not a sufficiently expert connoisseur on the subject, and very few enamels».

For many years on the market – the small silversmith’s workshop has been transformed with time into the current enterprise with around sixty employees and fifteen monobrands, with two new openings already on the calendar - Giovanni Raspini has witnessed the evolution in the very concept of jewel in our country: «At one time the “jewel” was only considered so if it was in gold or decorated with gemstones, in the last few decades all metals and all the various materials have been reappraised. articolarmente sensibile ai temi della femminilità in tutte le sue sfumature, Lia Malfermoni ha manifestato fin da giovanissima il suo talento per il disegno e la pittura. Nel suo percorso di studi artistici, svolti tra Venezia, Milano e la Germania, ha approfondito in particolare le tecniche di stampa, la calligrafia e il libro d’artista, sviluppando anche un côté didattico come educatrice alla comunicazione visiva. Inoltre conduce laboratori creativi e collabora con case editrici, compagnie teatrali e gruppi musicali per la realizzazione di materiali artistici. Negli ultimi anni ha esposto le sue opere sia in Italia sia all’estero, oltre a partecipare assieme ad altri 302 artisti su invito al progetto del libro d’artista collettivo Metropolis che ha già percorso l’Europa e le Americhe. A fine gennaio sarà presente ad Art 3F Paris, Salone internazionale di Arte Contemporanea, presentata dalla Galeria de arte Gaudi di Madrid. ■ Particularly sensitive towards femininity in all its forms, right from when she was very young Lia Malfermoni showed a talent for drawing and painting. ieri rappresentanti del cosiddetto ”operoso Nordest”, Andrea Fabbian e Federico Loriato conducono oggi Orocatena con la stessa dedizione dei loro padri che si associarono per avviare l’attività nel 1973. Nei 3000 metri quadrati della nuova sede, inaugurata nel 2003, si producono catene in tutti i colori dell’oro con una specifica competenza sul modello Veneziana in tutte le misure e le diamantature possibili, affiancata da alcune altre tipologie di catena. Nel settore, il marchio Orocatena è sinonimo di garanzia. «Perché mettiamo sullo stesso piano qualità e servizio», spiegano Fabbian e Loriato. «Chi si rivolge a noi, e prova il nostro servizio, in genere è un cliente soddisfatto». Fa la differenza la qualità del prodotto, certamente, ma anche il servizio perché non arriviamo mai in ritardo, non sbagliamo nel numero dei prodotti forniti, nelle misure e nei colori dell’oro richiesti. In altre parole rispettiamo sempre gli accordi presi in fase contrattuale.

La precisione che riusciamo a garantire, in tempi brevi, risulta vincente. I nostri clienti sono fabbricanti, grossisti, department store e negozi che utilizzano le nostre catene per proporle al pubblico a complemento dei loro oggetti.

Ultimamente abbiamo anche introdotto cambiamenti significativi nelle modalità di accordo con i clienti, rendendo più modulabili gli ordinativi minimi in base alle singole esigenze, ma sempre mantenendo inalterata la qualità e anzi perfezionandola grazie all’introduzione di nuove tecnologie». Nel distretto orafo vicentino, relativamente giovane, l’azienda di Bassano del Grappa è tra i primi 20 marchi registrati nella provincia ancora in attività, uno dei più storici. La nuova generazione, subentrata in affiancamento ai padri tra gli anni ’80 e i ’90, è riuscita a traghettare l’impresa anche negli anni della crisi. «Una volta i clienti arrivavano in continuazione, ora che molte realtà hanno chiuso i battenti il new business è da conquistare. I nostri padri erano amici in privato, oltre che soci in affari, e passavano insieme i momenti liberi del weekend. Ciò ha portato anche noi figli a maturare un rapporto quasi fraterno».

Vera Bate, una socialite londinese di origini modeste ma sposata molto bene (e più di una volta), piaceva combinare matrimoni, organizzare party, sapere in anticipo gli scandali che stavano per scoppiare. La sua cerchia di amicizie era la crème della società di Londra, Parigi e non solo.

In ogni caso nessuno meglio di lei sapeva comporre la lista degli invitati a un ricevimento, avviare conversazioni brillanti e intrattenere le persone. Non a caso, poco dopo averla conosciuta, Coco Chanel l’aveva scelta come rappresentante del suo marchio in Inghilterra con il vincolo di indossare abiti con la doppia “C” durante le uscite mondane: oggi Vera sarebbe una PR di successo. Fu lei a presentare Coco a Hugh Grosvenor, duca di Westminster, una sera durante una festa di fine anno 1923 all’hotel de Paris di Montecarlo. Ci volle poco perché i due si innamorassero: lui, chiamato Bendor, era alto, biondo, atletico, ricchissimo di nascita, generoso, sposato già due volte e dotato di humor; lei era affascinante, bruna, tagliente e affamata d’amore dopo la perdita lacerante del suo Boy Capel in un incidente stradale.

Entrambi avevano superato la trentina e la loro unione durò circa cinque anni scanditi da molti viaggi tra Parigi e Londra, dove il Duca aveva comprato per Chanel una casa a Mayfair, molti doni e diverse eleganti crociere sul Flying Cloud, lo yacht a quattro alberi lussuosamente arredato del Duca, che alloggiava quarantper la conduzione e i servizi di bordo. Ciò che interessa all’Orafo Italiano è la collezione di alta gioielleria ispirata alla vita sul mare di Chanel e allo yacht del Duca. Una collezione presentata lo scorso luglio a Parigi e tutta giocata sui temi delle corde, dei nodi, dei salvagenti, delle ancore e della rosa dei venti naturalmente in oro bianco tempestato di diamanti, zaffiri blu, lapislazzuli: una full immersion molto preziosa nel bianco e blu delle onde mediterranee. Qua e là le perle, classico dono del mare, e qualche necessaria digressione nel guardaroba per la vita di bordo, a base di abiti pratici e leggeri, illuminati qui e là dal giallo dell'oro e dei diamanti fancy. «Un orecchino scintillante total white su una pelle abbronzata, lo trovo delizioso», diceva sempre Chanel all'amico scrittore Pul Morand.■ Vera Bate, a London socialite of modest background but married well (and more than once), loved matchmaking, organising parties and finding out in advance which scandals were about to burst. Nobody knew better than she how to draw up the list of people to invite to a reception, launch brilliant conversations or

keep people entertained. Her circle of friends were the high society of London, Paris and other places, a perfect target for high fashion. It was no coincidence that Coco Chanel, shortly after having met her for the first time, chose her to represent her brand in Britain, with the sole obligation of wearing clothes with the double “C” on them at society events: today Vera, who, being tall and with a sporting figure, wore Chanel couture very well, would be a successful PR. It was she who introduced Coco to Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, at the New Year's party at the end of 1923 at the Hotel de Paris in Montecarlo.

The two soon fell in love with each other: he, known as Bendor, was tall, athletic, very rich by birth, generous, already married twice and brimming over with a sense of humour; she was fascinating, dark haired, sharp witted and hungry for love after the painful loss of her Boy Capel in a traffic accident. They were both over thirty, and their affair lasted some five years, with numerous trips between Paris and London, where the Duke had bought a house in Mayfair for Chanel, along with many gifts and several elegant cruises on the Flying Cloud, l'Orafo 2018

a four-mast yacht luxuriously fitted out by the Duke, who kept forty people on board just to sail the ship and provide service. To host their romantic flights to the Côte d’Azur, and to show she was well able to fend for herself, Chanel bought a villa, La Pausa, which became her buen retiro. Opinions differ as to why they broke up, after repeated rumours they were about to get married, but that is another story.

What Orafo Italiano is interested in is the collection of high jewellery inspired by the life of Chanel at sea and the Duke's yacht.

A collection presented last July in Paris, all on the themes of ropes, knots, lifebuoys, anchors and wind roses, made of course of white gold studded with diamonds, blue sapphire, lapis lazuli: a most precious full immersion in the white and blue of Mediterranean waves. Here and there pearls, the classic gift of the sea, and a few necessary digressions to the wardrobe for life on board, with practical and light clothing, lit up in places by the yellow of gold and fancy diamonds. «A total white-shining earring on tanned skin, that is something I find delicious», Chanel always said to her friend the writer Paul Morand.

a monumentalità classica delle opere su tela di Giampiero Bodino, designer affermato di gioielli e orologi per Richemont che recentemente ha avviato una sua maison eponima (sempre di proprietà del gruppo svizzero), giganteggia sulle pareti di Villa Mozart, piccolo tesoro di architettura razionalista firmato Portaluppi-Andreani, nel cuore del cosiddetto quadrilatero milanese “del silenzio”.

Proprio di fronte a villa Necchi Campiglio, a pochi passi da Villa Invernizzi con i fenicotteri rosa e altre strutture di pregio: in altre parole una delle zone più belle della città, dove è frequente vedere gruppi di turisti culturali con il naso all’insù o sbirciare tra cancelli e giardini privati. Lo scrigno di Portaluppi, che a sua volta non risparmia segni architettonici di volumi e forme importanti (archi, colonne, camini) e che grazie a Bodino è stato restituito al suo impianto interno originario, custodisce in realtà un patrimonio molto piccolo, ma solo in termini di dimensioni fisiche. Si tratta dei gioielli del designer, una collezione che si pone nell’alto di gamma e si rivolge a clienti esigenti, con aspettative e disponibilità economiche molto alte, spesso interessati al pezzo one of a kind, preferibilmente unico e su misura.

to in contatto molto presto, grazie a una infanzia alto-borghese trascorsa a Torino da figlio unico accanto a una mamma appassionata del genere, anche se all’epoca sognava di progettare case e palazzi. Ecco perché l’iscrizione alla facoltà di architettura di Torino, dove ha avuto la fortuna, la prima, di incontrare un docente come Giorgetto Giugiaro. «Una scuola eccezionale - racconta Bodino Da lui ho imparato ad avere una visione progettuale dell’oggetto assolutamente tridimensionale, una base tecnica che mi consente di passare agevolmente dal molto grande al molto piccolo». La seconda fortuna è stata quella di essere chiamato da Gianni Bulgari per affiancarlo nel lavoro creativo. «Gianni, che era l’anima della maison di famiglia prima di uscirne per avviare un proprio business, mi ha insegnato l’innovazione nella gioielleria: erano gli anni ’80, un momento esplosivo in casa Bulgari, in cui sono nati alcuni pezzi iconici e il lusso ha cominciato a utilizzare materiali prima inediti. Con lui ho capito le potenzialità del gioiello, che da quel momento è diventato il centro propulsore della mia attività». All’uscita di Gianni, anche Bodino ha lasciato Bulgari e, dopo dieci anni nella capitale, ha aperto uno studio a Milano dove ha iniziato anche a dare forma al suo immaginario, producendo opere pittoriche e collezionando oggetti d’arte. Lo ha sottolineato nelle scorse settimane Armando Branchini, vice presidente di Altagamma, presentando le previsioni per il 2018 assieme a una ricerca sul settore del lusso realizzata da Claudia D’Arpizio e Federica Levato di Bain & Company. Il 2018, ha detto Branchini, sarà un anno caratterizzato da una ulteriore crescita: il consensus del mercato prevede un +5 per cento del settore Gioielleria-Orologi, con una conferma della dinamica positiva del mercato europeo (+4 per cento) e un Ebitda, ovvero i ricavi al lordo delle tasse e degli ammortamenti, in crescita globalmente del 10 per cento. L’analisi presentata da Bain & C. parla chiaro: il settore del lusso ha chiuso il 2017 a livello globale in crescita del 5 per cento sull’anno precedente. Dal 2010 a l'Orafo 2018

oggi il comparto dei beni personali di lusso, di cui l’oreficeria fa parte, ha realizzato una crescita media annua aggregata del 6 per cento, che ha permesso al settore di crescere dai 250 miliardi del 2016 ai 262 miliardi dell’anno appena concluso. Il problema è cosa fare adesso. Ci sono almeno due grandi variabili da coordinare: l’impatto delle nuove generazioni sui consumi del settore (come si “premieranno” i Millennials?) e la realtà digitale, l’invadenza delle intelligenze artificiali e l’impatto di Big data sul mondo del lusso. La base di partenza è però solida. Per una volta operare in Europa non è discriminante. I consumi interni nel Vecchio continente hanno ripreso a crescere e più ancora la spesa dei turisti nel settore, in crescita del 6 per cento nell’ultimo anno. Una crescita sana, misurata per volumi e realizzata senza aumenti di prezzo, che arriva dopo due decenni di straordinario sviluppo: nel 1998 il mercato globale del settore valeva 858 milioni, oggi è a quota 2,628 miliardi. Un risultato che porta gli esperti di Bain & C. a ipotizzare una ulteriore crescita aggregata tra il 4 e il 5 per cento da qui alla fine del 2020.

Ma è soprattutto sulla mutazione comportamentale della clientela che è necessario focalizzarsi. Il cambiamento delle abitudini, la moltiplicazione delle occasioni di viaggio e di acquisto, hanno fatto sì che il consumatore di beni di lusso si comporti in alcuni casi come un turista sul mercato domestico e come un residente quando è all’estero. Il negozio monomarca, che oggi vale circa il 30 per cento delle vendite di un marchio, resterà centrale nella dinamica distributiva. Ma nel panorama dei circa 20 mila monomarca presenti nel mondo si è passati dalle mille aperture del 2012 alle 350 del 2017. Il consumatore, so92

prattutto il giovane, vuole superare il livello della storia raccontata per arrivare a condividere l’esperienza che l’azienda affianca al prodotto. E il peso del monomarca sulle vendite è previsto in discesa dal 30 al 25 per cento entro il 2025, la stessa percentuale che all’epoca caratterizzerà le vendite online. È una trasformazione importante questa: in otto anni le vendite online varranno quanto quelle realizzate nei negozi monomarca e assieme saranno la metà del totale. I department stores, i negozi specializzati e tutti gli altri negozi fisici sono destinati a vendere meno.

Resisteranno solo gli store negli aeroporti, che però valgono appena il 5 per cento delle vendite totali. In una realtà a così elevato tasso di trasformazione, le buone notizie per le imprese italiane del settore non mancano. Se è vero che nell’ultimo biennio l’Italia ha visto crescere meno (+5 per cento) gli acquisti dei clienti stranieri sulla base del meccanismo del “Tax free shopping” rispetto ad altri paesi europei (Gran Bretagna +22, Spagna +19, Francia +8), è anche vero che per la particolare dinamica di crescita, con molte new entry sul lato dei consumatori, sarà proprio l’entry level e il “mid segment” a guidare la crescita nel prossimo futuro, così come è stato nell’ultimo anno. Individuare le aspirazioni dei nuovi consumatori, conquistarne il coinvolgimento emotivo e focalizzare le occasioni di acquisto sui monomarca e sul canale online, che assieme nel prossimo futuro varranno la metà del venduto, sono due linee guida che oggi appaiono imprel'Orafo 2018

In particolare la comunicazione via web è una piattaforma di fondamentale supporto alla rete fisica dei negozi, un aiutante esterno che deve essere sempre disponibile, in grado di parlare correttamente le principali lingue, di offrire informazioni precise, anche sui prezzi, e di avvolgere il cliente nella magia del marchio, esaltandone le insite qualità. La doppia sfida appare essere proprio questa. Una fisica, digitalizzare i contenuti aziendali, e una interpretativa, comprendere che l’integrazione con l’online moltiplicherà le occasioni di acquisto e il pubblico dei potenziali acquirenti. when, with the worst behind one's back, the companies in this field must look ahead. Over the last few weeks Armando Branchini, Altagamma Vice President, has put emphasis on this idea, introducing the forecasts for 2018 along with a study on the luxury sector carried out by Claudia D’Arpizio and Federica Levato of Bain & Company. 2018, Branchini said, will be characterised by a further growth: the market consensus foresees +5% of the Jewellery Watches sector, with a confirmation of the positive trend of the European Market (+4%) and an increasing Ebidta, that is the profit after taxes and depreciations, of a global 10%. The analysis presented by Bain & C. is clear: the luxury sector ended 2017 with a 5% global growth when compared to the previous year. From 2010 to the present day the sector of the luxury personal items, including jewellery, recorded an average annual aggregated increase equal to 6% that allowed the industry to grow from 250 billions in 2016 to 262 billions for the year that has just ended. The problem is what to do now.

There are at least two big variables to coordinate, that is to say the impact of the new generations on the sector consumptions (how will Millenials "treat" themselves?") and the digital reality, the interference of artificial intelligence and the impact of Big data on the world of luxury. However, the starting basis is strong. For once operating in Europe is not discriminating. The domestic consumptions of the old continent started growing back and the tourist expenses in the sector increased even more, with a +6% over the last year. A sound growth measured by volumes and reached with no price increase, obtained after two decades of exceptional development: in 1998 the global market in this sector was worth 858 millions, today it has reached 2.628 billions. Such a result led the experts of Bain & C. to foresee a further aggregated growth between 4% and 5% from now to the end of 2020. However, we should mainly focus on the behavioural change of the clients. The change in habits, the increase of the occasions to travel and purchase led the consumer of luxury goods to behave, in some case, as a tourist on the domestic market and as a resident when he is abroad. The monobrand shop that today is worth 30% of the sales of a brand will remain central in the distribution l'Orafo 2018

trend. However, in the landscape of about 20 thousand monobrands present in the world, we passed from thousand opening in 2012 to 350 in 2017. Consumers, mainly the younger ones, want to overcome the level of the told history to share the experience the company associates to the product. The importance of the monobrand on sales is expected to decrease from 30% to 25% by 2025, the same percentage that by that time will characterise online sales. This is a critical change: in eight years online sales will be worth those realised in monobrand shops and together will account for half of the total. Department stores, specialised shops and all other physical stores are destined to sell less. The only stores to resist will be those located in airports that, though, are worth just 5% of total sales. In a reality characterised by such a high level of change, the good news for Italian companies operating in this sector is not lacking. In fact, if it is true that over the last two years Italy has recorded a lower growth (+5%) of the purchases made by foreign customers based on the "Tax free shopping" mechanism, when compared to other European countries (for example Great Britain 22%, Spain +19%, France +8%), it is also true that due to the peculiar growth trend with many new entries on the consumers' side, the entry level and the mid segment will lead the growth in the near future as last year. Detecting the aspirations of new consumers, winning their emotional involvement and focusing the purchasing occasions on monobrands and the on line channel that together, in the near future, will be worth half of the sold products, are two guidelines that today appear to be all-important. In particular, the communication via web is a platform meant to support in a critical way the physical network of shops, an external assistant that must be always available, able to speak fluently the main languages, offer precise information, also on prices, and wrap the client in the magic of the brand, exalting its inner qualities. This is exactly the double challenge. A physical one, consisting in digitalizing the company contents, and an interpretative one, that is to say understanding that the integration with online platforms will increase the number of purchasing occasions as well as the potential buyers. It will not be easy, but there are big opportunities.

omi, il Salone degli Stili di Vita di Fiera Milano, si preannuncia ricco di novità e suggestioni nella sua prossima edizione, in programma dal 26 al 29 Gennaio. Per quanto riguarda il settore degli accessori gli organizzatori hanno annunciato il lancio di Naturalia, una mostra di gioielli-moda ispirati alla natura curata da Homi Fashion Lab che vedrà esposte oltre 100 creazioni di produttori di bijoux, stilisti e designer dagli anni '50 ai nostri giorni. Da segnalare anche Project Room, evento dedicato all'accessorio moda, Tuttepazzeperibijoux, dedicato ai bijoux creativi, e l'area Maestri del Gioiello, riservato alle creazioni di artigiani orafi. Sono comparsi sulla piazza zaffiri di Bemainty spacciati per gemme del Kashmir: qualche consiglio per evitare truffe e imbrogli di Luigi

he vi avevo detto, io, nella mia ultima, a proposito di zaffiri di Bemainty del tutto similari - per un verso o per l’altro – a quelli birmani di Mogok, tanzaniani di Umba e cingalesi vari del tipo “geuda”? Che sarebbe stato «tutto da ridere con un’identificazione della provenienza geografica che poggiasse solamente sulle inclusioni caratteristiche e, chimicamente, sulla presenza dei basilari elementi in traccia».

E v’avevo pure promesso di tenervi informati, non è così? Ebbene, la faccenda è peggio di quel che immaginassi. Sempre loro, sempre quei camaleonti di “Bemainty”: li han puranche presi per zaffiri del Kashmir, sapete? O meglio, son stati affibbiati per tali.

Sono approdati su piazza a profusione e in stazze ragguardevoli (roba dai 5 ai 50 carati, mica scherzi!), con quel loro innocente aspetto “da Kashmir” a “manto di Madonna” d’un “blu vellutato” soffusamente lattiginoso. D’un blu straordinario, come sanno essere, appunto, i “Kashmir”. Ora, voi mi capite: un “Kashmir” di quella qualità viaggia anche sui centomila dollari al carato e, se al suo posto v’è invece un “Bemainty” da dieci volte tanto in meno, e quest’ultimo vi doveste beccare come se si trattasse dell’altro, sarebbero gran dolori. Pertanto, che vi resta da fare, oggidì, se v’offrono l’affare della vostra vita, quello storico “Kashmir” ripescato da chissà quale pezzo d’antiquariato di pregio?

Dubitare, dubitare sempre, cari amici. E date di piglio al vostro microscopio, a meno che non abbiate a portata di mano (e di tasca) mezzi peraltro altamente diagnostici quali la micro-spettrometria Raman, la spettroscopia UV-Vis, la fluorescenza a raggi X, la spettrometria TOF (laser ablation inductively coupled plasma time of flight mass, eccetera eccetera). Che vi dice il vostro fedele e fidato microscopio, ancora capace di risolvervi tanti bei problemini? Vi dice: che il “Madagascar” esibisce un’eccezionale trasparenza, a parte una certa generica lattiginosità, al contrario del “Kashmir” che spesso e volentieri - in ispecie in pietre al di sopra dei 10 carati - contiene minute ma frequenti inclusioni di uraninite, feldspato, tormalina e pargasite. Inclusioni, le ultime due, tipiche del “Kashmir” ma mai riscontrate sinora nel “Madagascar”. Che il “Madagascar” di frequente mette in bella mostra delle zonature d’accrescimento dense e sottili, mentre nel ”Kashmir” tali zonature sono tipicamente tridimensionali e a banda larga, con struttura “a ginocchio” o “a parquet”. Il primo, poi, rivela delle isolate zonature di colore giallo che risultano del tutto assenti nel secondo. Che il “Madagascar” sporadicamente può l'Orafo 2018

presentare delle concentrazioni di cromo che si manifestano sotto forma di estese e diffuse zonature di color porpora all’interno della pietra. Di contro, nel “Kashmir” le zonature di colore, dovute al cromo, se riscontrabili, sono caratterizzate da una struttura stratificata molto sottile e ben definita che risulterà visibile – come bande fluorescenti rosse - solamente a esposizione a forte fonte luminosa. Il “Kashmir”, inoltre, a normali condizioni d’illuminazione non ostenterà zonatura di color porpora alcuna, e men che meno diffusa. Che il “Madagascar” alberga spesso al suo interno minuti cristalli prismatici di zircone metamittico, alquanto simili d’aspetto a quelli ospitati dal “Kashmir” che però metamittici non sono. E qui sta il “busillis”. Forse che vi riesce di cogliere, nel “Madagascar”, l’alone che circonda lo zircone, alone ingenerato dalla disgregazione del circostante reticolo cristallino dell’ospitante zaffiro, a opera della radioattività da esso lui (zircone) rilasciata dopo l’improvvida fagocitazione? Che il “Madagascar” risulta quasi privo di quelle inclusioni fluide pseudo-secondarie peculiari del “Kashmir”.

Che il “Madagascar” potrebbe far sfoggio di sottili righe dall’aspetto “pulverulento” o “a binario”, associate a inclusioni “a scaglietta”, “a fiocco”, ingannevolmente simili d’aspetto a rassomiglianti strutture del “Kashmir” (ma pure dello Sri Lanka). Quindi non lasciatevi prendere dall’euforia: prima di giungere a conclusione, adelante Pedro, con juicio. Che vi posso dire, oltre a quanto sopra esposto? Che se doveste ancora nutrir dubbi, sarebbe forse cosa saggia - prima d’aprire i cordoni del borsello - consultare qualcuno che, con una spettrometria Tof (laser e tutto quel che gli vien dietro), sia in grado d’analizzare gli elementi in traccia presenti nella pietra. Qui non ci sarà possibilità d’errore, la risposta sarà certa e sicura. Non certe e sicure risulterebbero invece le risultanze della spettrometria UV-Vis, che vi scodellerebbero assorbimenti e picchi assai equivalenti tra i due. Nella speranza che il malefico “Bemainty” e/o “Andranondambo” (altra località malgascia dalle cupe assonanze, generatrice dei camaleontici zaffiri ) non ci riservino altre sorprese, vi auguro ogni bene per il nuovo anno a venire.

Tante le cause e le recriminazioni, ma resta il fatto che in due anni la storica manifestazione svizzera ha perso la metà degli espositori di

numeri parlano chiaro: a Baselworld 2018 sono previsti 6/700 espositori. Un calo di oltre il 50 per cento rispetto a due anni fa - nel 2016 erano più di 1.500 - preannunciato solo in parte dalle 200 presenze in meno del 2017, anche se in linea di massima previsto dagli organizzatori (i dati sono forniti dalla Fiera stessa).

E non si tratta di privilegiare la qualità sulla quantità: non c’è stato alcun riassetto, volto magari a eliminare le marche più cheap per valorizzare lo Swiss made. L’esodo ha coinvolto in modo trasversale tutti i segmenti di mercato, maison blasonate e fashion brand, nomi storici e artigiani indipendenti: da Eberhard & Co. a Louis Erard, da Hermès a Mondaine fino a Timex Group (con il suo ampio portafoglio di aziende), e prima ancora Girard-Perregaux o Ulysse Nardin, tanto per citare i marchi più noti. Alcuni sono “emigrati” al SIHH di Ginevra che si tiene in gennaio; altri sono rimasti in città, ma preferendo la suite di un hotel cinque stelle; altri ancora hanno dirottato l’investimento su eventi diversi (anche privati), tesi a conquistare specifici mercati. Chi se n’è andato lo ha fatto con una scelta volontaria, non perché allontanato dalla Fiera. Il problema è che il mercato sta cambiando, Baselworld no. Come spiegano gli stessi manager della diaspora, in passato qui si concludeva il 90 per cento degli ordini, e la raccolta dettava i ritmi della produzione, con alcuni orologi che si consegnavano anche 8/10 mesi dopo. Oggi si arriva al massimo al 20 per cento, e le consegne devono avvenire in tempi molto rapidi. E poi le aziende hanno spesso un proprio canale distributivo, fatto di boutique, di shop-in-shop, di e-commerce, quindi hanno meno bisogno di una sede deputata in cui incontrare rivenditori e clienti finali. Del resto internet ha del tutto trasformato anche la comunicazione, con i social media, i blogger e gli influencer a fare la fortuna di marchi e di modelli: lo dimostra lo sviluppo velocissimo di nuovi brand che si sono imposti come fenomeni di costume (con un giro d’affari enorme), senza nemmeno esporre a Basilea. Insomma, fatti i conti su costi e ricavi, la partecipazione in fiera non è più conveniente e tanto meno indispensabile. L’idea stessa di “fiera” intesa in questo modo sembra superata. Oltretutto, l’atteggiamento di Baselworld non aiuta: le pesanti condizioni imposte agli operatori sono rimaste immutate, si è dato spazio a produttori orientali di elettronica, si fa finta che tutto vada bene.

L’unica reazione reale, per ora, è stata accorciare di due giorni la prossima edizione. Né è mutato qualcosa nel panorama d’insieme: gli alberghi quadruplicano i prezzi durante la fiera e obbligano a prenotare per l’intera durata (il che può avere senso per le aziende, non per negozianti e giornalisti); ristoratori e taxisti alzano le tariffe. Non c’è da stupirsi che qualcuno abbia detto basta.

n The numbers speak for themselves: only 600/700 exhibitors are expected to be at Baselworld 2018. A decline of more than 50 percent compared to two years ago (there were more than 1,500 in 2016), only partially announced by the fact that there were 200 companies less in 2017, although basically in line with the organisers’ expectations (data are provided by the Fair itself).

And this is not about favouring quality over quantity: there has been no reorganisation to get rid of cheaper brands and bring out “Swiss made” products. The exodus has involved all market segments, luxury brands and fashion houses, long-standing names and craftsmen alike: from Eberhard & Co. to Louis Erard, Hermès and Mondaine, through to Timex Group (with its broad portfolio of companies) and, before them, Girard-Perregaux or Ulysse Nardin, just to mention the most famous. Some have “migrated” to Geneva’s SIHH to be held in Januay; others stayed in town, but preferring a five-star hotel suites; some decided to invest in different events (including private ones), aimed at specific market niches. Those who left did so by voluntary choice, and not because they were somehow sent away by the Fair. The problem is that the market is changing; Baselworld isn’t. As the managers themselves explained, 90% of companies’ orders were concluded there in the past, and their collection dictated the rhythm of production, with some watches being delivered even 8/10 months later. Today orders max out at 20%, and deliveries must be very quick. And companies often have their own distribution channels, including boutiques, shop-in-shops or e-commerce, so they don’t really need an official place where they can meet retailers and final customers. After all, the Internet has transformed communication, with social media, bloggers and influencers ensuring the success of so many brands and models; this is demonstrated by the rapid success of new brands, quickly established as social phenomena (with a huge turnover), without even exhibiting at Basel. In short, when balancing costs and revenues, participating in the trade fair is no longer as cost-effective as before, and much less necessary. The very idea of “trade fair” in this sense seems outdated. And Baselworld's attitude does not help: the heavy conditions imposed on the operators have remained unchanged; they gave space to Eastern electronics manufacturers, they pretend that everything is just fine. The only change, for now, is that the next edition is two days shorter. And nothing has changed as a whole: hotels quadruple their prices during the show and require booking for the entire duration of the show (which makes sense for companies, not for shopkeepers and journalists); restaurants and taxis raise their prices. i terranno dal 27 Febbraio al 5 Marzo le due fiere sorelle organizzate a Hong Kong dall'Hong Kong Trade Development Council: l'Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show si svolgerà nell'Awe, nei pressi dell'aeroporto, dal 27 Febbraio al 3 Marzo; l'Hong Kong International Jewellery Show nel centro espositivo Hkcec dall'1 al 5 Marzo. In totale si prevede la partecipazione di quasi 4500 espositori, rappresentanti di oltre 50 paesi e regioni, e di 85 mila visitatori e buyer da tutto il mondo. Al di là dei numeri e dell'importanza commerciale della piazza di Hong Kong, la manifestazione è uno dei principali appuntamenti nel calendario del settore per la completezza dell'offerta espositiva, il carattere internazionale e il vasto programma di seminari, forum, sfilate, oltre allo storico concorso di design del gioiello. n The two twin Hong Kong fairs organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council will be held from February 27th to March 5th: the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem& Pearl Show will take place at the Awe near the airport, from February 27th to March 3rd; the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show at the Hkcec exhibition centre on March 1st to 5th. Vicenza: fingers crossed S ee P age 100 Forecasts are optimistic for the winter edition of Vicenzaoro, scheduled from January 19 to 24: the organisers of Italian Exhibition Group – a company formed by the merger of Rimini Fiera and Fiera di Vicenza – announced that the event is already sold out, with growing attendance even among luxury brands, and a schedule full of events. The fair will open with Visio.Next, a summit dedicated to luxury and jewellery with insights on issues related to traceability and sustainability. Technologies and machinery will be featured in the T-Gold hall, bigger than the previous year, while The Design Room is again the highlight of the Icon hall, with 12 independent brands coming from all over the world to present their creations. In addition to a series of meetings on topical issues such as multichannel distribution, there will also be the awards ceremony for the Andrea Palladio contest, now in its sixth edition, which will take place on the opening night.

Sapphires: adelante, Pedro...

today, if you are offered the deal of your life, that historical "Kashmir" found in who knows what precious antique item? Doubt, always doubt, my dear friends. And grab your microscope, unless you can use (and afford) highly diagnostic tools as the Raman micro-spectrometry, UV-Vis spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence, Tof spectrometry (laser ablation inductively coupled plasma time of flight mass, etc, etc.) What does your loyal and faithful microscope tell you, a tool still able to solve so many little problems? It tells you: that the “Madagascar” sapphire shows an outstanding transparency, apart from a general milkiness, unlike the "Kashmir" one that often contains, particularly in gems over 10 carats, minute though frequent inclusions of uraninite, feldspar, tourmaline and pargasite. The last two inclusions are typical of the “Kashmir” version but so far have never been evidenced in the “Madagascar” one.

That in the “Madagascar” we can often see dense and narrow growth zones, while in the “Kashmir” such zones are typically blocky three-dimensional, with a “knee” or “parquet” structure. The former, then, evidences isolated yellow zones that are totally absent in the latter.

That occasionally the sapphires from “Madagascar” can show concentration of chromium, resulting in wide and diffuse purplish zones within the gem. On the other hand, in the sapphires from “Kashmir” the colour zones due to chromium, if it can be evidenced, are characterised by a very thin and well-defined layered structure that will be only visible, as reddish fluorescent layers, when exposed to a strong light source. Moreover, under normal light, “Kashmir” sapphires do not show any purple area, least of all diffused.

See Page 104 Do you remember what have I told you in my latest article about Bemainty sapphires that were very much like, one way or the other, to the Burmese ones of Mogok, the Tanzanian from Umba and the Sinhalese of the "geuda" type?

That everything would have been “to laugh about with an identification of the geographical provenience only resting on the characteristic inclusions and, on the chemical side, on trace element concentration”. And I had also promised to keep you informed, hadn’t I? Well, the situation is far worse than I imagined. Always and again those “Bemainty” chameleons: do you know that they were even mistaken for Kashmir sapphires?

Or better, they were fobbed off as such. They were poured on the market in huge quantities and sizes (5-50 carats items, no jokes!) with their innocent “Virgin Mantle” Kashmir-like look, characterised by a suffusedly milky “velvety blue" appearance. An outstanding blue exactly as the "Kashmir" ones can be. Now you can understand me: a “Kashmir” sapphire of such a quality is even worth a hundred thousand dollars a carat and, if it is actually a "Bemainty" ten times less, and in case you should buy this latter instead of the former, it would hurt. That the sapphires from “Madagascar” often contain tiny prismatic crystals of metamict zircon, somewhat similar in appearance to those evidenced in the “Kashmir” ones that, however are non metamict. And here is the rub. Maybe you have the chance to identify, in the "Madagascar" sapphire the halo surrounding the zircon, generated by the disintegration of the surrounding crystal lattice of the hosting sapphire, due to the radioactivity it (the zircon) emits after the improvident phagocitation?

That the “Madagascar” sapphire is almost free from those pseudo-secondary fluid inclusions that characterise the “Kashmir” one.

That the sapphires from “Madagascar” may show fine “dust” or “track” lines associated to “small scale”, “flake” inclusions that can deceive as they look similar to the structures characterising the "Kashmir" ones (but also the “Sri Lanka"). So, don’t be too elated before such bonanza. Before drawing any conclusion, then, adelante Pedro con juicio.

What can I tell you beside what I explained before?

That, if you still had doubts, may be this would be wise, before loosening the purse strings - consult someone that, through a TOF spectrometry (laser and all the rest) can analyse the concentration of trace elements in the gem. Here there won’t be any margin of error as the answer will be certain and sure. The results with UV-Vis spectrometry, instead, would not be sure and certain at all as you would be served absorptions and peaks quite equivalent between the two.

Hoping that the evil "Bemainty" and/or “Andranondambo” (another Madagascan place with somber assonances, generating the chameleonic sapphires) has in store for us no other surprises, I wish you the best for the new coming year.
