l igual que la mayoría de las ciudades fundadas en el territorio colombiano, Santiago de Cali fue producto de la avaricia de los conquistadores españoles. Como miembro destacado del avasallador ejército de Francisco Pizarro, quien se encontraba atareado sometiendo a los incas del Alto Perú, el acorazado Sebastián de Belalcázar recibió órdenes de su superior para que se dirigiera hacia el norte, por Los Andes, con la misión de descubrir esa fuente inagotable de riqueza llamada El Dorado. La tarea resultó sencilla. El conquistador avasalló fácilmente distintos enclaves incas y, de paso, iba fundado ciudades: Quito y Popayán, entre las más importantes. Al divisar el enorme y hermoso valle del río Lili se propuso eliminar al cacique Jamundí para invadir sus tierras, que además de fértiles eran ricas en oro. Así, el 25 de julio de 1536 Sebastián de Belalcázar fundó a Santiago de Cali, como punto de partida para la conquista de los territorios septentrionales.

Iglesia La Merced Cholado

Durante los siguientes dos siglos, la ciudad se consolidó como un breviario de enormes haciendas donde esclavos traídos desde África se dedicaban a cultivar caña de azúcar. En la actualidad, estas estancias identifican tradicionales barrios caleños, como Cañaveralejo, Chipichape, Pasoancho, Arroyohondo, Cañasgordas, Limonar y Meléndez, entre otros. De los siglos idos todavía se conservan algunos sitios para conocer y descubrir la esencia de los vallunos, como el barrio San Antonio. Este enclave, tendido sobre una colina, aún mantiene su aura tradicional, y está coronado por un parque y una bellísima y diminuta capilla. Muy cerca está el Parque Artesanal Loma de la Cruz, donde se encuentra gran variedad de artesanías típicas de la región. Una vez conquistada la cima, la recomendación es sentarse

relajadamente para admirar la panorámica de la ciudad, acompañado de un champús de Lola, que se consigue al lado de la iglesia. Desde estas alturas se puede percibir lo desparpajada y coqueta que es esta ciudad; Cali se muestra a propósito para que propios y extraños la recorran al dedillo y descubran por sus propios medios por qué es llamada la Sultana del Valle. Por tanto, es preciso descender de las alturas para comenzar el recorrido en la Plaza Cayzedo, o el corazón mismo de la capital del Valle del Cauca. Sentarse en una de sus bancas es hacer todo un estudio antropológico del occidente colombiano y conocer de primera mano las razones de por qué son tan fiesteros los caleños, al punto de que su urbe es conocida como la Capital Mundial de la Salsa. complejo religioso de San Francisco, con sus plazas, iglesias y su Torre Mudéjar, que datan del siglo XVIII. Luego, hay que caminar unas cuantas cuadras para dirigirse, ahora sí, al lugar más obligado de todos: la iglesia de La Ermita. De fina arquitectura gótica, es la edificación más reconocida de todo el país con sus agraciadas terminaciones que apuntan al cielo y que dan sombra a la Plaza de los Poetas. Diagonalmente a este ícono por excelencia de la capital del Valle, está el Puente Ortiz, sobre el río que divide la ciudad en dos. El río Cali le da un respiro fresco a la urbe, en especial en las horas vespertinas, cuando una brisa se cuela por entre las ramas perezosas de los árboles que dan sombra a esta corriente hídrica. que bordea el río, revela uno a uno diversos tesoros urbanos. Para iniciar, en la margen derecha está el edificio del Centro Administrativo Municipal y cuadras más arriba se exhibe inmaculado el centro histórico La Merced, con sus tres capillas coloniales y los museos de Arte Colonial y el Arqueológico. Es recomendable hacer este paseo a pie, y contar con todo el tiempo y la parsimonia posibles, pues hay que sucumbir a la tentación de adentrarse a tradicionales barrios, como El Peñón, y parques que han resistido el paso del tiempo, como el del Perro, un acopio cultural. El murmullo de la corriente de agua, el trinar de los pájaros y la belleza natural guían al paseante hasta el ‘El gato del río’, una bella escultura del maestro vallecaucano Hernando Tejada, que sirve de antesala al Museo de Arte Moderno

La Tertulia. Probablemente, la oferta cultural de La Tertulia haga pensar que hasta aquí llega el recorrido. No obstante, es bueno recordar que metros más arriba está la meta final: el Zoológico de Cali. Ubicado en la parte alta del río, al oeste de la ciudad, este parque se yergue como uno de los mejores del continente; y en medio de un diseño arquitectónico y paisajístico de primera categoría alberga a más de 820 animales. Un enorme acuario y un observatorio de aves también hacen parte de este centro científico dedicado a recuperar especies en peligro de extinción y a rehabilitar animales para devolverlos a su hábitat natural.
