What is compost?

Can You

Compost is a mixture of decomposed organic materials that is used to fertilize and improve soil. It is full of nutrients and helpful bugs, fungus, worms and bacteria.

COMPOST? Reasons To Compost

Worms make compost even better! This is a process called vermicomposting.

Compost helps to build better soil.

It conserves water! It helps to keep the water near the plant for longer so that the plant needs to be watered less often.

Urine (yup, pee!) can actually make your compost healthier for the soil.

Compost solves a waste problem. About half of your household waste can go into the compost bin, keeping it from the landfill. Less waste in the landfill means cleaner air for us to breathe.

Compost helps plants! It eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers that can eventually deplete the soil and harm the environment.

Greens are rich in NITROGEN. Add one part GREENS

Browns make CARBON.

WATER keeps things decomposing.

Compost can filter toxins out of water to help keep your plants healthy.

TIME is necessary.

FIND A SHADY SPOT in your yard and use a simple wooden frame. Size can be up to 3 feet by 3 feet.

Add three parts BROWNS

ADD MORE MATERIAL REGULARLY but remember to balance your piles with greens and browns!

TURN, TURN, TURN your pile with a pitchfork about once a week to help aerate.

Tips

Start with a thick base layer of browns, including sticks, to promote air circulation. Then alternate the next layers with greens and browns, always making sure the top layer is browns.

Your compost will be ready in about 2–3 months! Add it to your garden or to your potted plants!

Dirt and Soil are NOT the Same!

What is the difference between soil and dirt?

Dirt is dead!

It is not an ecosystem. It is made out of sand, silt and clay but has nothing in it that is alive.

Soil is alive!

It contains organisms such as bacteria, fungi, worms, insects and organic materials that are breaking down. It is a complete ecosystem, and the most important part of any farm or garden.

TIME TO EXPERIMENT! What will happen if we grow seeds in different kinds of soil?

What you need: 5 small pots, all the same size Fresh compost Dirt Potting soil Seeds to grow Water Sunshine

Track what happens. What do you observe?

What to do:

1 Label the pots with NUMBERS 1–5.

2 Fill POT 1 with compost.

3 Fill POT 2 with dirt.

4 Fill POT 3 with potting soil.

5 Fill POT 4 with half dirt and half compost.

6 Fill POT 5 with half potting soil and half compost.

7 Plant the same number of seeds in each pot and add water.

8 Place in a sunny spot and water when the soil gets a little dry.

Little Gem BLT Salad

Private Chef Robin can make even the most unusual vegetables taste amazing! Don’t like salads? Try to make this one with bacon and a honey mustard dressing.

Makes 4 salads

What you need:

2 heads Little Gem lettuces 6 strips bacon 1 pint cherry tomatoes 1 bunch scallions 1 lemon, juiced 1 tablespoon whole-grain Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon honey 4 tablespoon olive oil

What to do: 1. Wash the produce before use.

2. Cut the bacon into 1-inch pieces and cook in a medium frying pan over medium heat until crispy, about 10 minutes.

3. While the bacon cooks, trim roots of Little Gem lettuces, cut heads in half, and plate.

4. Rinse tomatoes and cut in half.

5. Rinse scallions and remove the root ends.

6. Juice the lemon, removing any seeds.

7. Make the dressing: In a small bowl, whisk the mustard with 2 tablespoons lemon juice + honey. Season with salt and pepper. Whisk in 4 tablespoons olive oil, slowly, to blend.

8. After the bacon is cooked, transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain. Pour off all but about 1 tablespoon of bacon fat from the pan and return the pan to the stove over medium-high heat.

9. Sear the scallions in the hot pan until slightly charred on all sides, about 5 minutes. Remove scallions from the pan, cut into ½-inch pieces and set aside.

10. Drizzle lettuces with some dressing, then top with the bacon, scallions and tomatoes.

Some favorites here are romaine, gem, butter, red leaf, head (iceberg).

The best time to grow most lettuces in Ventura County is fall through spring. However, if you have enough cool weather (like in Oxnard), lettuce can be grown throughout the summer too.

MEET A LOCAL FARMER! Evan Graham Arango Ojai Roots Farm

Q. Why’d you decide to become a farmer?

You know, I didn’t really decide to become a farmer. I just realized one day that I was a farmer. I just loved growing plants and food in my garden and feeding my family and friends. And then one day, my garden got so big that I realized we couldn’t eat all the food ourselves and couldn’t give it all away. And if I wanted to keep growing plants, I needed to figure out how to sell them. So if you are selling plants and selling harvest, I guess you are a farmer.

Q. What makes your farm unique?

We use almost no machinery whatsoever, so we don't really till the ground. I don't have a tractor. We do almost all of our work by hand or with very simple metal tools.

Q. What does it mean to you to be a farmer?

A.

Q. What is regenerative about your farm?

A.

There are many different practices that we implement in order to heal our soil and make it better.

To me, regenerative farming is really about making sure that your farming process is adding goodness and health to your land rather than extracting it. We use a lot of compost, mulch—wood chips and straw— it all decomposes and gets eaten by worms and mushrooms and bacteria. As it decomposes, the nutrients inside become available to the plants. And then the plants take that up through their roots and they grow really nicely.

Another thing that's unique is that the farm is very, very small. It's just about a half acre, and that's including our roads and everything. If you look at the actual areas where I plant it’s right around a quarter acre, and yet we've produced tons and tons of vegetables. In the summer, we produced more than 2,500 pounds of tomatoes from two small patches.

I really believe in a different model of farming.

I believe in one that’s healthier for the community, healthier for the workers, healthier for the planet, healthier for our plants. And that’s what I’m trying to build here.

But we’re not just thinking about what crops grow well in each season. We’re really thinking about what we can sell and how we try to avoid wasting product. Also, making sure that what we’re producing ends up going to people and makes a profit, because this work is really, really hard.

Most farming isn’t a charity, it’s a business. I really believe that sustainable profitable businesses can do so much good for the community and for our planet. What could be a better, more sustainable business than a small farm since everybody needs to eat?

¿Qué es el abono?

¿Puedes hacer EL COMPOST?

El compost es una mezcla de materiales orgánicos descompuestos que se utiliza para fertilizar y mejorar la tierra. Está lleno de nutrientes e insectos útiles , hongos, gusanos y bacterias. ¡El abono puede calentarse mucho! En raras ocasiones puede incluso arder espontáneamente (estallar en llamas).

Ensalada “Little Gem BLT” Rinde 4 ensaladas

Lo que necesita:

2 cabezas de lechugas Little Gem 6 tiras de tocino 1 pinta de tomates cherry 1 manojo de cebolletas 1 limón, en jugo 1 cucharada de mostaza Dijon integral 1 cucharadita de miel 4 cucharada de aceite de oliva

Qué hacer: 1. Lave los productos antes de usarlos.

2. Corte el tocino en trozos de 1 pulgada y cocine en una sartén mediana a fuego medio hasta que esté crujiente, aproximadamente 10 minutos.

3. Mientras se cocina el tocino, corte las raíces de las lechugas Little Gem, corte las cabezas por la mitad y póngalas en un plato.

4. Enjuague los tomates y córtalos por la mitad.

5. Enjuague las cebolletas y retire las puntas de las raíces.

P. ¿Por qué decidió convertirse en agricultor?

Y luego, un día, mi jardín creció tanto que me di cuenta de que no podíamos comernos toda la comida y no podíamos regalarla toda. R.

Si miras las áreas reales donde siembro, es alrededor de un cuarto de acre y, sin embargo, hemos producido muchísimos vegetales.
