The Edible Memphis Team shares their gift-giving secrets

I need to admit this from the start: I prefer shared experiences with people I love over tchotchkes. My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is making ravioli with the Alley family. For over a decade, Christmas morning was for delivering MIFA meals with my children, followed by breakfast at CK’s.

These days, mine and Richard’s celebrations usually include a short road trip with a special meal. Some favorites include Saint Leo in Oxford, Leña Pizza + Bagels in Cleveland, Mississippi, The Fold: Botanas & Bar in Little Rock, and Dairy Kream in Tupelo. My mom and kids are always game for a fancy dinner in town—or in any town, really.

But the truth is that all of these people I love to spend time with also expect gifts during the holiday season! So I’m relying on this guide as much as you are to come up with something special for the people closest to me—and to wow at Dirty Santa swaps, office gift exchanges, and extended family gatherings.

STACEY

Last year, I got each of my boys a really nice chef’s knife since they both like to cook. (This was an idea I stole from my husband, who gave me this exact gift six years ago.) This year I’ll add to their kitchen tool collection and upgrade some of their pantry staples. But mostly, I hope that we’ll find time to sit around the

right, showing up with a bag of popsicles from La Michoacana or MemPops always leads to hero status.

I’m going to fill my “emergency gift closet” with pints of Boycott Coffee (packaged like ice cream with a sticker and a surprise inside!) paired with vintage coffee mugs from Flashback.

And I wouldn’t be doing a proper job as editor if I didn’t recommend an Edible Memphis gift subscription. Send it to someone locally who wants to be inthe-know or to someone far away who’ll enjoy a taste of Memphis food stories in their mailbox each quarter.

Here are a few more clutch ideas from the Edible team.

BILL

Our publisher, Bill Ganus, sent in a very eclectic short list including Thistle & Bee wildflower honeycomb and a bottle of Alma del Jaguar re posado tequila. Both of these delicacies are made sweeter by a cause. Thistle & Bee helps local survivors of human trafficking. Beekeeping is just one of the skills they learn. And this was news to me: Alma del Jaguar directly supports the Northern Jaguar Project, protecting wild jaguars in the Mexico-U.S. borderlands.

Bill also likes to give Urban Earth’s okra seeds— because he believes everyone should try their hand at growing okra. But his signature gift? Firewood bundles. “I buy a large delivery or truckload of wood and tie bun dles with twine for front porch drop-off gifts,” he says. “I sometimes combine it with a pack of s’mores ingredi ents for a bonus.”

MANDA

Copy editor Manda Gibson had some great picks as well. She says, “When Edible Memphis played Secret Santa for our holiday party, I went to Winter

Arts in search of something beau tiful, handmade, and food-related for Bill. And I found it—an ice cream spoon for Edible Memphis’s favorite ice cream aficionado.” Ev erything at Winter Arts is high-quality and handmade by Memphis artists.

For friends and family who already have it all, Manda loves to give a con sumable gift. One of her go-to’s is Truck’s Fete de Noel, the holiday blend of beans they offer every winter. It’s also what you’ll find dripping from her kitchen coffee maker at 6:45 most December mornings.

Her mom appreciates things that are lovely and unique, so when she was looking for one last gift for her last Christmas, she knew Cane & Herb “simple syrup with an herbaceous twist” was just the thing. “She’s tried it in different ways, including in coffee and iced tea—but her fa vorite is to add a splash of Cane & Herb syrup to sparkling water,” says Manda.

When she’s stocking her own pantry for holiday baking, Muddy’s Bake Shop to source. Her favorites include Muddy’s own crystallized ginger and Singing Dog Vanilla pure vanilla extract. Plus, all of their pantry items are top-quality and beautifully packaged, so they make great gifts for the home baker in your life too. Manda adds, “And of course, Muddy’s bakery cases are full of ready-to-eat treats perfect to give as a gift or to serve at your next holiday event. Because Muddy’s always uses simple ingredients like real butter, the goodies will taste like they came from your own kitchen—only better!”

quick to get you a dozen of whichever kind you want, and they have several good flavor options to pick from. I can vouch for the jalepaño and cheese, and also both chicken in green or red sauce.”

As for tea, Rebecca loves that she can get dry leaf tea by weight at Maggie’s Pharm

“They’ve got a lot of options, plus sometimes you can find a fun little storage container to put the tea in to add some ex tra gift flare,” she says. She also likes to choose from teas already packaged in pretty canisters, just

When she needs something special to decorate her own holiday table—whether that’s a vintage Christmas-patterned tablecloth, pretty cloth napkins, or new-to-her drinking glasses—Antique Warehouse Mall is her first stop. “It’s always a fun time, and I usually find what I’m looking for, but if I don’t, I’ll almost certainly find something I wasn’t looking for!” she says.

(And I couldn’t agree more!)

REBECCA

When it comes to gifting, art director Rebecca Phillips relies on two T’s—tamales and tea. She says, “Tamales are a seasonal tradition, and I’m picky about where I get them.

La Unica is a solid choice be cause there’s a good balance of meat with masa. They are
