PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD AT HOME
Year Two Mathematics
Circle Trios
Draw four circles each on your piece of paper. Write four numbers between 3 and 18, one in each circle.
17 8 16 12
Take turns to roll a dice three times and add the three numbers. If the total is one of the numbers in your circles then you may cross it out.
The first to cross out all four circles wins.
Pasta Subtraction
For this game you need a partner, a dice and some dried pasta.
Start with a pile of pasta in the middle. Count them.
Throw a dice. Say how many pieces of pasta will be left if you subtract that number. Then take the pieces of pasta away and check if you were right!
Keep playing…..the person to take the last piece wins!
You can make the game harder by starting with a larger number of pasta pieces or using a dice with numbers greater than 6.
Shopping Maths
Choose 6 different items each costing less than £1. Make a price label for each one, e.g. 39p, 78p. Shuffle the labels. Then ask your child to do one or more of the following:
Place the labels in order, starting with the lowest. Say which price is an odd number and which is an even number. Add 9p to each price in their head. Take 20p from each price in their head. Say which coins to use to pay exactly for each item.
Choose any two of the items, and find their total cost.
Work out the change from £1 for each item.
Guess My Shape
Think of a 2-D shape (triangle, circle, rectangle, square, pentagon or hexagon). Ask your child to ask questions to try and guess what it is. You can only answer Yes or No. For example, your child could ask: Does it have 3 sides? or: Are its sides straight? See if they can guess your shape using fewer than five questions. Now ask them to choose a shape so you can ask questions.
You will need a pack of cards, pen and paper or a white board.
Use the number cards including the aces
Shuffle and place face down in a pile.
Turn over 4 cards and place them face up on the table.
Try to reach the target number of 24 by using + - x ÷
E.g. if you turn over
2 x 8 = 16
16 + 9 = 25
25 – 1 = 24
There are many different possible answers…if you can’t make 24 exactly, try to get as close as you can to 24!
Directional Hide and Seek!
A game for 2 players. You will need a small soft toy / object.
Player 1 hides the object somewhere in the room / house.
Player 2 waits in a designated starting place.
Player 1 then describes in stages how to reach the hidden object.
Eg. Take 4 steps forward
Turn a quarter turn left
Go forward 2 steps
Turn through a right angle to the right etc.
Once the object is found then swap roles.
Aim to practise as much positional language as possible.
