PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD AT HOME

Year One Mathematics

Dicey Sums

Take turns to choose a number between 1 and 20 and write it down.

Throw a 1-6 dice and look at the number displayed.

Work out the difference between the chosen number and the dice number.

E.g. If the chosen number is 12 and the dice number is 5, then 12 - 5 = 7 You could draw a number line to help visualise the sum if necessary.

Shape Activity

At home or when out and about look at the surface area of objects describing their 2D faces eg square, circle, triangle.

Ask:

What shape is the plate, window, bath mat, traffic light, road sign etc.

Choose a shape for the week and see how many of these shapes your child can spot during the course of the week.

Extend to using language associated with 3D shapes eg sphere, cuboid, cylinder etc.

Takings

You will need a dice and a collection of pasta pieces, lego bricks or counters.

Take turns to roll the dice. Take that number of pasta pieces/ lego bricks etc. and write down that number.

Next go roll the dice again and add the number on to your previous total. If you get it right then take that number of pasta pieces to add to your pile. If you get it wrong then you don’t get to take them. Keep a note of the new total if it has changed. Roll the dice again, as before add it on to the previous total and take the relevant number of pasta pieces if you get the sum correct.

The winner is the first person to gain the total of your choice.

How Old?

Start with your child’s age. Ask: How old will you be in 2 years ’ time? How old were you last year? How old will you be in 10 years time? Etc.

Repeat with other family members and a variety of questions.

Adding Circles

You will need a dice, Pencil and paper.

Each person should draw 4 circles on their paper and write in each a different number between 2 and 12.

2 6 9 11

Roll the dice twice and add the two numbers. If the total is one of the numbers in your circles then cross it out. The first to cross out all 4 of their numbers wins.

Secret Numbers!

Write the numbers 0 to 20 on a sheet of paper.

Ask your child to secretly choose a number on the page, then ask him/her some questions to find out what their secret number is.

Is it less than 10?

Is it between 10 and 20?

Does it have a 5 in it?

He/she may answer only yes or no. Once you have guessed the number it is your turn to choose a number, your child asking the questions.

To make the game easier or harder you can limit the number of questions or use bigger/ smaller numbers.
