Courtney Ramirez ’09 is ready for her next steps. This fall, just four months after completing her degree in Elementary Education, she began her teaching career at Leopold Elementary School in Madison. She was honored as the 2009 recipient of the Joseph E. Schmiedicke Future Educator Award.

Partnership in Perspective There’s an adage in the corporate world that says the mark of a good business partnership is when all parties are equally vested in the success of the other. Another way to define partnership might be “as willing to carry as to be carried.” In this Magazine, you’ll meet a remarkable woman who credits the people she’s been surrounded by for the energy needed for a lifetime of service. She says, “I’ve always had really good people who have supported me, and really shared the burden. I haven’t had a hard time of it.”

Her reply to the question about what she plans to do next is not only a great reflection on her, I think it also speaks especially well of the College. “I think it is really important to maintain the connections with the partnerships you already have,” says Stacie Pinzl ’10.

“I think in particular with this after-school recreational program, there is a lot more that we as a campus can get involved with. I don’t see the need to search out new volunteer projects.” Sounds like she’s committed to the success of the organization she’s partnered with.

(Editor’s Note: Marilyn Aiello, O.P., MD ’61 is this year’s Mazzuchelli Award honoree. The awarding of the Samuel Mazzuchelli medallion honors those who cultivate intellectual and spiritual resources to empower others.)

Marilyn Aiello, O.P., MD ’61, has not exactly taken a typical route in her life’s journey. The oldest in a family of three, her parents were very traditional, first-generation Sicilians. She grew up on the west side of Chicago, and from a very early age, attended Catholic schools. “Being the eldest female, I was expected to get married, and have children,” she says.

Her junior year at Trinity High School in River Forest, Illinois, would change that. There, studying under the guidance of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, “I felt called to enter the order, which was not in the plans.”

Edgewood College was in the plans, Aiello says. “The Chicago-area girls were sent to Edgewood College, and the others went to Rosary (now Dominican University, River Forest, Illinois). I couldn’t have been more fortunate to go to Edgewood—I just loved it there. We were very much a part of the fabric of Edgewood and had wonderful teachers. Sr. Jeannette Feldballe in Science—she really mentored me. I showed a real aptitude for science.”

Graduating in 1961 with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry, the young teacher was sent to the still-segregated Mobile, Alabama, to teach high school. The Sisters, she says, had the school for the black children—the Catholic school. It was here that her sense of social justice, nurtured in both her high school and college educations, truly caught fire. “I grew up white middle-class—the Church, the police, officials—these were people you went to when you were in trouble,” she says. “But that wasn’t the way it was in the South. It was a shock to me. I remember Ku Klux Klan marching in Mobile. It was a time that was very formative in my life, in my attitudes, my goals and my values.”

In 1969, to protest labor practices in Mobile, activists with Neighbor Organized Workers staged a demonstration near the site of the nationally-televised America’s Junior Miss Pageant.

Aiello, along with fellow Dominican sisters, standing in a park across the street from the center in a show of support for a fellow sister, was swept up in the mass arrests that ensued. “As a young sister, it really impressed upon me the cause of civil rights, and the needs of those who don’t have the rights or the means to succeed.”

She addressed that need by devoting herself to teaching science. “In this high school—Heart of Mary—this tiny little, African-American high school—we taught wonderful people.”

One of her students was Alexis Herman, who, after attending Edgewood College briefly during the mid-60s, would go on to become the Secretary of Labor during the Clinton Presidency.

Teaching assignments in Washington, D.C, and Milwaukee were followed with a return to the South, and the spark of a new inspiration that would again change the path of her career.

psychologically it was hard for them to leave their own community and go into the white communities. So if they got sick they were either going to the health department or they were going to the emergency room. That just wasn’t good health care.”

Aiello had seen firsthand the effects of a system of segregation that, while now outlawed, was still very much a part of daily existence. As a way to address the needs of a growing Mobile, the University of South Alabama created the College of Medicine, and welcomed its first medical students in January 1973.

“One morning I was at breakfast, and the sisters were reading the paper, all about this new medical school,” Aiello recalls.

“So they said, ‘You need to go to the medical school, and become a doctor and help these people.’ Well, at that point I think I was 35 years old, and I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding!’ But they just kept saying this—only because I taught science.

“Health care was a real problem, because the people—

7 Finally they said, ‘Aren’t you even going to try? What if God wants you to do this, and you don’t even try?’ ”

She was admitted to the new medical school, and enjoyed the “experience” she brought as an older student; one of her fellow students in medical school, “a wonderful young man,” was actually one of her former students from Heart of Mary High School. “Being older was not a problem,” she says. “I didn’t have the distractions a lot of the younger students had. But they did ask, ‘why are you doing this?’ ” She told them she was going to open a clinic to serve a predominantly African-American neighborhood. The clinic she founded (while still in medical school) was the Franklin Clinic.

That one facility has since grown into the Franklin Primary Health Center, Inc., a system of 10 clinics in the Greater Mobile area. One of those clinics is named for Marilyn.

After returning to the Chicago area to complete her medical residency, she contemplated her next steps. The Franklin Clinic in Mobile was by now established and serving the community well. She set her sights on her next challenge. Writing to several health agencies across several states in the Deep South, Aiello tried to identify an area with an especially high need. One of the responses she received came from a church official in Mississippi, from the Jackson diocese.

Aiello says she and a group of sisters toured several areas, including the tiny town of Marks, Mississippi. “So a group of us made a tour of sorts, and went among other places to Marks, Mississippi. Again,” she says, “I felt a real call.”

On September 1, 1981, Aiello and her team arrived in Marks.

“Four of us sisters went there—a nurse practitioner, a social worker, and an office manager,” she says. “At one point I was the only doctor in the whole county.”

“So my brother came down with his sons to help us remodel.

The ‘black waiting room’ became our office, and we expanded

Sixteen years at the center of an issue—access to health care—that resonates as much today as it ever has. “I am praying we do get meaningful health care reform. It is so important. It is something which is impacting every single American,” she says. “You can’t imagine the suffering of people, especially when they’re sick. It’s a terrible thing to be sick, or see a family member who is sick, and not be able to either help yourself, or help them.”

Today, Aiello serves as the medical consultant for the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, traveling where needed when her community calls. The energy and passion remain undiminished.

“I’ve been blessed with pretty good health, and I really have loved what I do,” she says. “I’ve always had really good people who have supported me, and really shared the burden. I haven’t had a hard time of it,” she says with a laugh.

When asked about her own “search for truth,” her experience at a small, liberal arts college in the Midwest that set her on a path of nearly 50 years of service in teaching and health care, she is at a rare loss for words. Reflecting back on her education, she says she remembers English classes, Art, Music, Religion classes, even bird-watching. “There’s more to life than just the profession you’re in,” she says. “There are things that really feed the spirit and that’s what Edgewood College gave me a love for.”

“I’ll never forget when I went to (Southern Methodist University) for my master’s degree, and I wondered ‘big university, Southern Methodist—how would I be able to stack up?’ I had a lot of students who were in the master’s program come to me for help! I sailed through that. My education at Edgewood stood up to any of them. You don’t know it until you put yourself up against others. You think you’re from a small college, but it was a big education.”

The education and experience of life and work in Mobile had fired her spirit and heart. “The clinics were segregated. They had ‘black’ waiting rooms and ‘white’ waiting rooms. So the first thing we had to do was tell the people, ‘if we come here, we can’t have two waiting rooms.’ This was in 1981.”

“My original intent was to be there about eight years, and get another doctor to take over, so I could keep moving and help another area. But it was so poor, it was very hard to get doctors.

So I was there 16 years.”

Clearly the idea had caught on, but Aiello was still not sure she could (or should) pursue it. She sought the counsel of Bishop John L. May, a fellow Chicagoan, and asked, “Can sisters be a doctor? I was really very dubious, and I was looking for someone to say it was ridiculous.”

The College recently recognized three extraordinary women who share not only an Edgewood College MBA, they also share a commitment to making the world a better place. Dr. Pamela Bean ’00, Beth Curley ’95, and Mary Linton ’00 were each honored at this year’s Distinguished MBA Alumni Awards.

Dr. Pamela Bean is the Executive Director of Research at Rogers Memorial Hospital in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. There, she leads the development of best practices and evidence-based procedures to measure treatment outcomes in programs that treat alcohol addiction, eating disorders and mental illnesses. She is also the Main Partner of Millennium Strategies, a consulting firm which she founded 10 years ago to help companies develop new laboratory procedures to diagnose and monitor alcohol use and abuse.

Beth Curley has been employed by M&I Bank since 1989, and has served as a Personal Banker, Retail Sales Manager, Branch Manager, and has served as the Private Banking Manager in the Wealth Management Division for the last eight years.

Beth’s responsibilities include relationship management, operations, marketing, budgeting, and business development.

She is also a mentor within the bank and the Leader of the Regional Diversity and Inclusion Council, which strives to create and enhance a climate of respectfulness and diversity throughout the bank.

Mary Linton joined Promega in 1993, and is currently Director, Enterprise Solutions. This position recognizes an evolution of roles during her 14 years at Promega—from international auditing and accounting in Finance and Accounting, to Corporate Development, helping the establishment of the business organization in China (1994–2001), oversight of distributor operations in Asia and Latin America (1995–1997), to leading the Genetic Identity team (2002–2006), and most recently, in Corporate Marketing. Mary and her husband, Bill, give back to the community through contributions that focus on education and health care.

An Adventurous Spirit Changing Lives

Shortly after Ballweg earned her undergraduate degree in special education and math, her sons Ben and Sam were born. Over the course of the next 10 years, she went on to receive a music degree from the UW-Madison, and gave birth to her daughter, Kate.

“My career has always aligned with my children’s life,” she recalled. While her children were growing up, Ballweg chose to teach at her children’s schools or schools that were nearby. And for about 20 years she operated a full-time music studio in her home.

When her daughter started school, Ballweg decided she needed to follow her own advice and learn something new so that she would continue growing. She thought learning to fly would be a practical family convenience for visiting her sons in college and distant relatives and friends.

“Learning to fly changed my life more than any other thing,” she said. “It was challenging to enter such a male-dominated world, it tapped new skill areas, and it became a passion and love. It has opened the door to so many unique opportunities—like flying around Mt. Fuji, earning an African pilot license and doing a self-fly safari, and flying along the coast of Australia and making wonderful friends who share that adventurous spirit.”

“I would not have made it without the support of good friends who cheered me on,” she added.

There is another family that is important to Ballweg—the Edgewood family.

The Edgewood family also includes the College. In addition to earning two degrees from the College and serving on its Board of Trustees, her generous financial support is playing a key role in the future construction of a visual and theater arts center. Ballweg hopes that the visual arts building will lead to the construction of a performing arts center.

“The art and music facilities are basically the same as they were when I attended the College nearly 40 years ago.

The dedicated faculty and the talented students deserve a better facility,” she said. “Music and the arts are critical to a person’s total education and becoming a well-rounded human being.”

Ballweg also serves on 21 local, state and national music-, education- and business-related boards. She is President of the Endres Manufacturing Company Foundation, a family business founded by her grandfather. She is also an active member of aviation groups such as the Experimental Aircraft Association (she’s piloted 200 free flights for young people through the Young Eagles Program). Another of her priority projects is chairing the “Madison Cares Campaign” through Porchlight—an organization working to meet the needs of homeless people.

“In giving you receive so much in return,” Ballweg said of her community service. “If you give and change someone’s life, that will never be lost. I tell my students, ‘the things that you will value—life experiences and skills, spending time with people, learning, growing—can never be taken away from you like material things. What you become is your personal legacy.’”

She graduated from Edgewood High School and her children, including daughter-in-law Annie, attended Edgewood Campus School and Edgewood High School.

For the past nine years she has been an instructor at the high school, teaching an aviation course she has designed.

In her class students study the math, science and history of flight. They also are exposed to many aviation-related careers and learn about the creative and explorative spirit of early aviators.

The Center for Nursing Excellence The College recently announced a new partnership with Meriter Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital—the Center for Nursing Excellence. The Center, which welcomed the first Edgewood College nursing students and other health care professionals from Meriter and St. Mary’s this fall, features the latest in nursing education equipment and technology, including highly sophisticated patient simulators that “serve” simulated clinical scenarios that mirror real-world patient care situations. “This center provides an invaluable clinical resource and setting for our students,” said Margaret Noreuil, RN, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Nursing.

“The Center enhances our capacity to deliver the outstanding education our students expect, and to prepare the outstanding nurses our colleagues in health care expect from Edgewood College.”

Building a Path

I was one of the many freshmen fortunate enough to participate in the painting of the stepping stones during orientation, and the experience was truly a memorable one.

During the stepping stone painting I was grouped with two other girls from my forum group, Brittany and Betsy. We worked together to brainstorm and then agree upon a symbol that represented partnership in our eyes and hearts.

Going into this project I didn’t know either one of them and by the end of it we were exchanging numbers and hanging out for the remainder of the day.

The stone painting may seem like a small gesture to some, but to my group and me it was a huge deal. The fact that something that the three of us designed was going to be put somewhere on campus was kind of a cool thought, we were forever going to have our mark, and we hadn’t even had our first day of school yet!

We got together with one goal in mind, but in the process we learned so much about one another and gained knowledge that we weren’t expecting.

The path to partnership is a beautiful representation of the type of true bonding experience that took place that day and a lifelong symbol of the type of relationships that were built while painting the stones. In my experience it was more than enjoyable and I hope you all find the same joy while walking along the stones that I found painting them.

General Education is the part that challenges students to gain a deeper understanding of the workings of the natural world or to examine more closely their own political or moral beliefs.

Strengthening the Cor

(Editor’s Note: For the past several years, the College has worked on a revision of its General Education curriculum. That work is now complete. John Fields, Associate Professor of Philosophy and current Chair of the Philosophy Department, guided this effort as Chair of the General Education Implementation Task Force.)

Each fall at Edgewood College brings with it something new: new classes, new students, new faculty members, new issues to talk about and reflect upon. But this fall brings with it a change in college life that the community has not seen in over three decades. This is the beginning of the transition to a new General Education curriculum.

At Edgewood College, General Education has for many years been embodied in something called the “F system.” “F” stands for “Foundations,” as in “Foundations of Communication” —the set of courses students take to become skilled in composition, speech, logic, and math—and “Foundations of Human Learning”—the set of courses students take to get the “breadth” in their learning described above. Among these are courses in literature, studio art, history, and the natural sciences.

Effective as this system has been, over time—as educational goals and techniques have gradually evolved—pressure has mounted to have parts of it changed. Some of the pressure has come from those who believe that in the new millennium our concept of breadth must itself be broadened. They have

They have proposed that student learning should center on a series of core courses and experiences, connecting breadth with self-exploration, college mission, and values.

And, finally, some of the pressure has come from those who are familiar with emerging trends in higher education, trends that favor increased assessment and accountability and a clearer sense of what students can expect to get out of their college education. They have proposed shifting away from a system that sees student success in terms of how many classes a student completes to a system that focuses on student outcomes: on what students, at the end of the day, concretely know and can do.

It was not an easy job to get all of these concerns into a single new General Education structure. But that was what the faculty at the College, after many years of discussion and debate, eventually decided to do. They decided that each of these—an expanded notion of breadth, a stronger emphasis on Mission and integration, and a clearer statement of outcomes—was of equal value and could and must work together.

And so now the transition has begun. An implementation task force has been appointed. New course proposals are being solicited. Affected College offices and departments are meeting and strategizing. As with any new enterprise, there is a lot of anxiety: especially considering that the target date is the fall semester 2010 (freshman class). But there is also excitement and hope, the chance to re-think, re-direct, and begin anew.

Leadership and Service Recognized in National Award In June of this year, Stacie Pinzl ’10 was selected for a 2009 Student Leadership Award. The award, conferred by the Jenzabar Foundation, carries with it a $5,000 grant. This year, The Jenzabar Foundation recognized 10 student-led campus groups and projects that have made a significant contribution to better the world outside of their institutions of higher education. Officials with the Foundation recognized Ms. Pinzl, and the College’s AmeriCorps (M3C) program, for “critical leadership and coordination of a central campus volunteer program that provides after-school support to children in one of Madison’s largest homeless shelters.”

Ms. Pinzl travelled to Washington, D.C. and, accompanied

by President Dan Carey, accepted the award on behalf of the College.

The Jenzabar Foundation: This past year you single handedly organized a group of Edgewood College student volunteers to provide after-school support for one of Madison, Wisconsin’s largest homeless shelters. What advice do you have on how to successfully coordinate a campus volunteer program as successfully as you did?

Awareness is the biggest key to develop a functioning volunteer program. When I originally was given the position to organize this group it was on the verge of dying out. After talking with a few friends, I asked them about the program and if they had heard about it. The majority of students said that they hadn’t heard of it, but were interested in maybe going once to try it out. It was then that I knew the issue. There was interest it just wasn’t known campus wide. I immediately

started sending out campus wide emails and putting up posters in the most eye catching places. Within a week, I had received emails from about 20 interested students. I kept them on a separate email group which I would then send reminder-emails to them. Also I kept encouraging them to bring friends along.

My only other advice is to keep in touch with the current volunteers through email with reminders of the upcoming dates. Also, a big hit was an end of the year celebration with pizza to commemorate their hard work. I asked the head volunteer coordinator from the Salvation Army to come in and we had a reflection night. It’s not only the service that we do, but it’s in reflection that what we learn the other components that we never stopped to think about before we were in the active in service. Considering it was my first year running this program, I was overwhelmed by the results of growth.

TJF: Do you plan to continue your work with the afterschool recreational program at the Madison shelter or are you looking into new volunteer projects for the upcoming school year?

I think it is really important to maintain the connections with the partnerships you already have. I think in particular with this after-school recreational program, there is a lot more that we as a campus can get involved with. I don’t see the need to search out new volunteer projects. I will be studying abroad during my spring semester and with my involvement with this program, I am searching for a temporary replacement to take over my leadership. It is in this continuation of my work with the Salvation Army that not only do we deepen our relationship but continue our service for years to come.

Brandon’s Books

The 27-year-old collects used books from instructors, the College library and other sources. He then sells them online. Occasionally he gives books that don’t sell to those on campus who are interested, free of charge. The books rarely last a day.

Smith is not your typical businessman. He has Down Syndrome.

His business, “Brandon’s Books,” is possible thanks to the Cutting Edge Program – a program where adults with significant intellectual disabilities who are usually unable to meet standard college admission criteria have an opportunity to participate in the academic and social aspects of college life.

Through the three-year-old program, individuals with disabilities such as autism and cerebral palsy participate in specialized core courses. Smith started his business this spring through the program’s internship opportunities. Participants are also encouraged to take general education courses.

Brandon Smith is quite the entrepreneur.

“The program is really about hope,” said Dedra Hafner, the program’s director.

According to Hafner, often participants enroll in the program because they hope to develop relationships with other young adults, improve their ability to communicate and increase their confidence. They also hope to acquire skills that will lead to fulfilling jobs and living independently.

The program, which is the only one of its kind in the state, is also a program of hope for parents.

“Like other parents, parents of children with disabilities dream that their children will have a college experience and they have been told for so long that it will never happen. Well, it can happen but in a way that is different from nondisabled students,” she said.

Each participant enrolled in a general education course has a student assistant who does things such as help him or her use the correct book and find the right page during class activities. According to Hafner, instructors “have been able to make sure the participants are included in class discussions and activities and have been creative in how they involve the individual.” She added, “College classes typically have a broad range of learners. This program gives professors experience in modifying or re-tooling their teaching so that everyone can be involved in what is going on.”

Hafner and a mentor assist Smith when necessary. He works eight hours a week and his profit has grown to about $400 per month.

“I think selling books is fun. It makes me feel good,” Smith said. “It is increasing my typing skills and I like doing it as my own business.”

Like all savvy business owners, Smith has goals. He hopes to increase his profits by adding CDs and videos to his inventory and developing his own web page so that it is easier to buy items from him and not his competitors.

And where does he hope part of his increased profits will go? To pay the salaries of the assistants he plans to hire.

Research in China

By Kellian Hartshorn ’11, Renee Hartshorn ’09, Patrick Meuer ’11, Ruthie Rolfsmeyer ’11, Zach Uher ’11 Editor’s Note: This summer, five Edgewood College students and their faculty mentor, Professor Jinxing Chen, spent a month in China researching the impact of modernization on local identity in Suzhou, a city of approximately 6 million people in the lower Yangtze River basin. The trip, funded through the award of an AsiaNetwork Freeman Fellowship Grant, was previewed in the Summer 2009 Magazine.

It felt like winning the lottery. We tried not to hope too much as we sent off the package that contained our essays, transcripts, resumes, letters of recommendation and research proposal, but a few months later, we got the news that our proposal had been accepted and a major research grant, offered by AsiaNetwork and the Freeman Foundation, would take us to China for the summer.

Our research team is made up of a very diverse group of students, allowing us to look at the local identity of Suzhou, China, through five separate disciplines. Business major Zach Uher is focusing on the influx of foreign businesses into this ancient culture.

Art major Ruthie Rolfsmeyer is focusing on the preservation of the traditional arts, particularly Suzhou embroidery, and the role that these traditions are playing in the modern society. History major Patrick Meuer is focusing on the historical local identity and the roles that modernization has played in shaping the new identity of the city. Spanish and French major Kellian Hartshorn is focusing on the preservation of the local dialect of Suzhou and on the growing usage of English and Mandarin.

Finally Renee Hartshorn, who recently graduated with majors in biology, chemistry and broad field natural sciences, is focusing on the environmental issues facing this rapidly modernizing city.

We met regularly throughout the spring semester in order to plan our research in China, to discuss books, articles, news reports and videos and to develop the surveys and interview questions that would be our main forms of data collection.

After months of work, on June 12 we left for China and into an experience that would teach us, challenge us and give us a better understanding of the world and ourselves.

As researchers in China, we were treated with a respect and generosity that none of us had been expecting. We were honored to be able to interview government officials, deans and professors from the Suzhou University and the Suzhou University of Science and Technology, factory and restaurant owners, directors of museums and theaters, students, artists, and so many more. However, we did not limit ourselves to scheduled interviews and took every opportunity we could to speak with the people we encountered: gardeners, taxi drivers, shop owners, etc. We worked hard to make sure we were gaining a complete and well-rounded understanding of the local identity of the city.

Along with surveys and interviews, we also used site observations for data collection.

We visited places like the Suzhou Industrial Park, with unbelievable space age technology that represents the modernization sweeping China. We also visited numerous sites of cultural and historical importance that represent the preservation of ancient traditions including gardens thousands of years old, museums, theaters, research institutes and the bridges and canals that have given Suzhou its reputation as the Venice of the east.

We are currently in the process of analyzing our findings and will be presenting our research at the 2010 Edgewood College Student Research Conference and International Week as well as at the national AsiaNetwork conference in Atlanta, Georgia, and through numerous publications throughout the year.

Common Reading in the Classroom edgewood college today

CJ Friedrichs, Jaime Guiscafre and Tommy Norton perform an original scene from their group issue scenario which highlights the themes and ideas from this year’s Common Reading selection, The Chris Farley Show.

The Common Reading selection for this year is The Chris Farley Show, by Tom Farley and Tanner Colby. In anticipation of each academic year, a work is selected to provide a framework for incoming freshmen, current students, and faculty and staff to tackle challenging issues. Students address topics both in and out of the classroom.

Here, students from combined theater arts courses perform scenes from an original scenario based on themes and ideas from the book. Theatre Arts Professor Jeanne Leep says the students work in groups to create the scenarios, which are performed in a combined lab and open to the public. Leep says this particular scenario deals with addiction and drug abuse, but topics included feeling like an outsider, outlining the history of substance abuse, and making choices to be liked instead of being oneself.

A new book profiling an important leader in the life of Madison and the College is now on the shelves. Mensch, by Marvin Zolot, MD, is a biography of Rabbi Manfred Eric Swarsensky. Rabbi Swarsensky was the founding rabbi of Temple Beth El in Madison. The book describes a close relationship between Rabbi Swarsensky and Marie Stephen Reges, O.P. (“Sister Stevie”); the author calls the two “theological soul mates.” Edgewood College awarded Rabbi Swarsensky with an honorary doctorate degree in May of 1973. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, DANIEL J. CAREY For many years, Edgewood College has practiced fiscal conservatism in our budget projections and planning. In dealing with the challenges of our current global recession, that approach has enabled us to continue to balance our budgets and to position us for continued growth and success. Please allow me to share just a few of our accomplishments.

Because we’ve taken this conservative approach, and because we’re working through the challenges we face as a community, we began the 2009–2010 year on very solid ground. This year’s freshman class of 285 was the most diverse and academically talented on record. We’ve matched our record-level retention rate we achieved last fall. The key point is this—we have taken a sound, planned approach which has positioned us well for the opportunities that continue to emerge in our rapidly-changing world. We are taking every step to make sure that the College is poised for long-term success.

We are increasing our retention of first-year students through our focus on quality teaching, engaging students in campus life, and working together to identify and assist students who are struggling. We have demonstrated the ability to attract and serve well students from diverse backgrounds.

In this year’s incoming class, 16% of our students self-identify as students of color. That’s a record high level and it’s significant, but we have more work to do to become the College we aspire to be.

Distinctive new programs like our post-baccalaureate accelerated Nursing program, and our graduate certificate program in Urban and Rural Economic Development are moving students toward their career goals and creating new sources of revenue for the College.

Edgewood College has been well served by staying committed to Mission, by working as a community, and by developing partnerships that meet the needs of those around us. I know I speak for our faculty, staff and Trustees when I say “thank you” for your support of the College. For our part, we’re committed to strategic planning that positions the College for a very bright future. You can be assured that one thing will never change: we continue to put our students first in everything we do.

A love affair with Edgewood College In 1938 Mary Frances “Mickey” Green Murphy arrived in Madison from Woodstock, Illinois and began what her daughters would call “A Love Affair with Edgewood College,” then a two-year college. Daughters Sue (Murphy) Hereley ’65 and Eileen Murphy ’69 would follow her lead to Edgewood College and discover their own passions for a place their mother truly loved. In July of 2003, prior to their mother’s passing in August of 2004, Eileen created the Mary Frances Green Murphy Theatre Scholarship to honor their mother and financially support students, who like Mickey are dedicated to theatre.

The Pekoyke Scholarship Meg Pekarske graduated in 1997 with a degree in Criminal Justice. In 2006, Meg and husband Eli Woyke developed The Pekoyke Scholarship (a combination of the couple’s last names). With all of the philanthropic opportunities and worthy organizations, we asked Meg, “Why Edgewood College, and why a Scholarship?”

“Edgewood College is a very special place,” says Meg. “It’s where I ‘found’ myself. The environment was empowering, one that encouraged me to take chances and learn about myself. I had a very positive educational experience.

Edgewood is my true essence.”

Today, Meg works as a health care attorney at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren, one of the largest law firms in Wisconsin. “I wouldn’t be here without Edgewood. As I progress through life, I circle back, reevaluate who I am, and find myself in a similar state of empowerment­—much like when I was at Edgewood.”

Meg and Eli are lifelong learners, and consider their gift to the College an investment. “Education is something that you own,” Megs says. “It’s not just a piece of paper—it’s something no one can ever take away from you.”

The Pekoyke Scholarship will support a student who’s had significant hurdles to overcome: family challenges, economic challenges, relationship issues. Meg and Eli say they are passionate about helping students who invest in themselves and see the value in learning life skills.

Giving to the College financially is only one of the many ways Meg Pekarske ’97 and her husband supports this community. She’s served on the Alumni Council, a Presidential Search Committee, and has spoken to students, faculty and staff at numerous campus events.

Through the uniquely named Pekoyke Scholarship, that service will extend well into the future for students of today and tomorrow.

Our 2009 grads certainly do. Each semester, our senior class is asked to give back to current and future students. In May, we developed our GIVING FEELS GOOD campaign designed by Julie Kramer ’09. Community Scholar Awards This fall we welcomed the third cohort of Community Scholars to campus. The four-year Community Scholar Award makes an education possible for economically disadvantaged students from Dane County who may not otherwise pursue a college education. Each year, the program accepts three academically motivated freshmen who have shown a commitment to community service. The program’s four-year developmental framework promotes students’ academic success as well as their leadership potential, and provides them with numerous opportunities for community engagement on and off campus.

Tee Up for nursing The Tee Up for Nursing (TUFN) Golf Event is just one of the ways Edgewood College is supporting the educations of our nursing students. July 13 marked the 6th annual fundraising event which was lead by TUFN Event Director and alumna Lucy Keane ’84, Partner of Rippe Keane Marketing. What inspires Lucy and Rippe Keane to be involved with such an event? …”there’s something different about an Edgewood College nurse… nursing is more than medicine… they care about the patient, the patient’s family, the community where they live … they are concerned about social justice, about inequalities in health care …they see the bigger picture.”

The dollars raised from the event provide scholarship support to the growing population of nursing students through the Nightingale Endowment Fund. The School of Nursing graduating class grew from approximately 40 students in 2004 to an anticipated 100 in May of 2010. Eagle tennis collects second straight NAC crown and NCAA Tournament bid MADISON, WI – If last season’s Northern Athletics Conference Women’s Tennis Championship was a comfortable drive down an open highway, this year’s version was a whiteknuckle commute through an ice storm and falling rocks.

In the end though, the Edgewood College tennis team arrived at the same destination; a second straight NAC Championship and a second straight automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Edgewood College survived a tense second day, taking titles at three different flights to narrowly edge Aurora University and Concordia University Wisconsin. The Eagles scored 73 points to top the Spartans at 69 and the Falcons at 68. Each of the top three schools won three different flight titles, but the Eagles picked up crucial points by winning semifinal and third place matches to take the overall crown for the second straight year.

“I just told them to focus on every point, and let the points add up to games and sets,” said first year head coach Ben Oestreich. “I thought if we can do that, the matches and points will take care of themselves, and that’s what happened.

It was amazing to stand there through the awards ceremony and have someone on the podium in nearly every flight.”

Edgewood College (10-3, 10-1 NAC) made a habit of dominating doubles play during the dual match season, and they didn’t let up on the rest of the league at the NAC Championships. Bridget Prendergast and Kelsey Steinhorst won their second consecutive No. 2 doubles title, beating Rebecca Heczko and Reilly Connaher of Marian University.

Prendergast and Steinhorst finished the season 14-0 against NAC opponents. As a team, they finish their career in NAC competition with a record of 48-1, with three NAC doubles championships. Jessi Ditzler and Brittany Storhoff also finished a perfect NAC season, defeating Emily Bates and Melanie Seitz, also of Marian University.

At No. 4 singles, second-seeded Ditzler, playing her first season of collegiate tennis, made it a two title weekend for herself when she beat top-seeded Siri Nelson of Aurora University to claim the Eagles’ only singles championship.

“Jessi just had an outstanding tournament,” said Oestreich.

“She had lost to Nelson during the regular season, but played her best this weekend. For her to win two titles was a great lift to our team.”

It’s the second straight NAC title for the Eagles, who scored 96 of a possible 101 points and won seven flights at last year’s championship meet. Edgewood College will also make their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance next spring, as they earn the Northern Athletics Conference’s automatic bid. The NCAA Tournament will begin the first weekend in May. Larson Inducted into the WBCA Hall of Fame

By that I mean that we always had a mixture of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors in the rotation instead of one class dominating the lineup. As a result, we always had experienced and intelligent players in practice and on the court. I also had the opportunity to coach against a lot of the best coaches in the Midwest and the country, from whom I learned a great deal.”

Former head men’s basketball coach Steve Larson was inducted into the WBCA Hall of Fame.

WAUKESHA, WI – Northern Athletics Conference Commissioner G. Steven Larson, Ph.D., former head men’s basketball coach and director of athletics at Edgewood College, was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 3.

Dolph Stanley of Beloit College and Rick Bowen of UW-River Falls are two additional college coaches in the 2009 WBCA Hall of Fame class. Larson’s first win over a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team, then the Wisconsin State University Conference, was in November of 1992 versus Bowen’s River Falls team. Larson’s teams claimed victories over eight of the nine WIAC schools (UW-Eau Claire), including three victories over teams in the year in which they were the WIAC champions.

His team in 2001 also beat Division II UW-Parkside, which was nationally ranked at the time.

“It is truly an outstanding class of inductees,” Larson said.

“I am truly honored to be included.”

“This is the ultimate honor for all of the student-athletes and assistant coaches with whom I have had the privilege to work,” Larson said. “This is also a tribute to my family and mentors who supported me and had such a great impact and influence.”

Prior to his success at the college level, Larson landed his first high school head coaching job at Riverside Military Academy in Georgia/Florida in 1976. In 1978 he returned to his alma mater UW-Oshkosh to complete his master’s degree as a graduate assistant to the Dean of the College of Education and the Titan men’s basketball program under the tutelage of coach Bob White.

Larson coached the Eagles for 20 seasons from 1986–2006 compiling a 362-216 (.626) record. He was the all-time winningest coach in the former Lake Michigan Conference (155-57), and one of the winningest active coaches in the state of Wisconsin at the time he resigned from his post at Edgewood College.

Upon completing his degree, he accepted the position of head boys’ basketball coach and Dean of Students at St. Mary’s Springs High School in Fond du Lac where he led the Ledgers to two consecutive trips to the WISAA state tournament and a state runner-up finish in 1982.

He enjoyed 20 consecutive winning seasons as head coach at Edgewood College and led a total of nine teams to national tournament berths. Edgewood College, under the direction of Larson, is the only school in the nation to have done so in all three national associations—NCAA, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Small College Athletic Association.

Coach Larson then returned to his high school alma mater, St. Mary Central High School, where his 1986 team finished an undefeated regular season record and a final state ranking of No. 1 in the AP and No. 2 in the UPI polls. In the summer of 1986, he coached a team of Wisconsin All-Stars to an undefeated record and gold medal in the World Friendship Games in Sydney, Australia. He was assisted by Jim Kersten, WBCA Hall of Famer from Manitowoc Roncalli High School.

The Eagles also won six Lake Michigan Conference Championships and five LMC tournament championships during his tenure in which he was named LMC Coach of the Year six times and Regional/District Coach of the Year eight times. He also received the four National Association of Basketball Coaches awards including two “Guardians of the Game” awards. Coach Larson had 10 teams that were ranked nationally, and cracked the nation’s Top 20 list for defense five times.

Larson attributes his longevity of success to all of those who supported him and the combination of players.

“I had outstanding support from my family, my assistant coaches, the administration, and student-athletes who were

Coach Larson credits the successes of the teams he has been fortunate to coach to his wife, Deb, and his children, Jenny, Josh, Jackie and Ryan, and his mentors, in addition to coaching outstanding student-athletes and having dedicated assistant coaches. His grandchildren, Reagan and Steven, have been his inspiration.

MEQUON, WI – This season, all the pieces fell into place for the Edgewood College men’s cross country team. The final result was the Eagles’ first conference title in cross country in school history at the Northern Athletics Conference Championships held on a wet and windy course on the campus of Concordia University Wisconsin. The Eagles totaled 47 points to edge the Falcons who had 50.

Men’s Cross Country team claims first conference title in history

The Eagles planned to rely heavily on their top three runners, and that trio came through. Freshman Josh Williams nearly ran down race favorite Andy Ashenden of Concordia Wisconsin, finishing second with a time of 26:33, just seven seconds behind. At the conclusion of the meet, Williams was named the NAC’s Freshman of the Year.

Junior Andrew Garvey cracked the conference top five for the second year in a row, placing fourth in a time of 26:58.

Sophomore Connor Boushon placed sixth in 27:28, improving on his 13th place finish at last year’s NAC Championships.

The placement of the Eagles’ fourth and fifth runners would turn out to be vital, as the Falcons put their first four runners in the race’s top 13 finishers. Nathan Richardson, a freshman from Rapid City, South Dakota, came through with a 14th place finish in 28:08 and Nate Campbell ran a time of 28:54 to place 22nd overall (and 21st in the team scoring), to give the Eagles the title.

Head coach Bethany Brewster was named the Northern Athletics Conference Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in a vote by her peers at the conclusion of the meet. It is the first Coach of the Year award for Brewster in either track or cross country.

Edgewood College soccer coach on verge of milestone win

For all of the praise that gets heaped on Tim Alexander in regard to his coaching ability - dedication, attention to detail, communication skills and an ability to craft effective game plans that pinpoint an opponent’s weaknesses—there is one characteristic that perhaps carries as much weight with his Edgewood College soccer players as all the others combined.

They are not only allowed, but encouraged, to call him Tim. “That’s another testament to his character,” said Nick Lombardino, a former Madison Memorial athlete who is a senior on the Eagles’ men’s team. “He’s a fun-loving guy, easy to talk to, and you can joke to him. In that respect, he always encourages players to come into his office to talk to him in regards to soccer, school, even personal matters. Just shoot the breeze.”

The fact that so many of them take him up on his offer speaks to the level of respect Alexander commands at Edgewood, where he is on the verge of a milestone that underscores both his impressive track record and his unusual dual role as the men’s and women’s coach.

According to research by the school’s Sports Information Director, David Petroff, Alexander is on the verge of becoming just the fifth soccer coach in NCAA history, regardless of division, to win 200 games with both genders.

Notable in Alexander’s case is that he is the only coach either Edgewood program has known. He founded the men’s

program in 1990 and is 197-161-28 in 20 seasons at the helm; his mark with the women’s program, which he started in 1993, stood at 226-97-18 heading into Tuesday night’s match at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, the Northern Athletics Conference leader.

Only two other active NCAA coaches have spent more time leading both programs simultaneously. What impresses Edgewood College athletic director Al Brisack is that the 53-year-old Alexander’s work ethic and outlook is as strong as ever.

“He comes into every year as if it’s the first year he’s coaching soccer,” said Brisack, who has worked with Alexander for the last decade and served as his boss for the last three years. “He ends every year with the same excitement about the players that are getting better and how they’ve improved. There’s an incredible passion for soccer. He just loves the game.”

Building and balancing Alexander’s enthusiasm traces to his playing days. As a defender at UW-Green Bay, he twice earned All-Midwest Conference honors, and in 1977 he helped the Phoenix reach the Final Four of the NCAA Division II soccer tournament.

Alexander stayed on as an assistant coach for a year at UW-Green Bay before taking a job at Green Bay Premontre High School. His teams compiled a 153-31-6 record over 11 years and finished runner-up five times in the private-school (WISAA) state tournament. Alexander said that as time went on, he thought more and more about turning his passion for soccer into a career.

When a head coaching job opened up at Edgewood College, Alexander seized the opportunity. But it wasn’t an easy task building up two programs with few resources, especially on the men’s side. Alexander tried to raise recruiting interest by booking games at Breese Stevens Field, where the University of Wisconsin’s teams played at the time. The move provided an exciting atmosphere and more credibility.

With hard work, Alexander’s teams eventually broke through on the men’s and women’s sides. During his tenure, the Eagles have won a combined 11 Lake Michigan Conference regular-season titles and eight tournament championships.

Alexander says that juggling both teams can get pretty overwhelming at times (he’s also had stints as the men’s baseball and tennis coach at Edgewood). But luckily for him, he hasn’t had to do everything on his own.

“He’s got some assistants that share his passion and relate very well to his players,” Brisack said. “That’s important because he can’t be in two places at once, so he has to rely on those assistants quite a bit.”

Lombardino, who also credited the work of an assistant coaching staff that includes former Eagles standout Kevin Winter, said Alexander is organized to the point of being laughable.

“I actually don’t know how he does it year after year,” Lombardino said. “To me, it seems like an enormous challenge, but he has it so well laid out. By the preseason meetings, he not only has each team’s practices scheduled for the year, he’s even got the bus schedule for away games set.”

Putting players first Alexander said he still learns new things about coaching every year. In particular, he’s had to implement varying styles between the men and women.

On the field, it’s common for him to jump into a practice drill to personally demonstrate what he wants to see occur, rather than just offer constructive criticism. And while his skills in analyzing the strengths and weaknesses both of his team and the opponent yield solid game plans, Alexander enjoys being able to turn his players loose on the field, to let them make the decisions.

Off the field, he is credited with developing a loyal group of program alumni, which he honors with occasional write-ups for the Edgewood College athletics website.

“He’s out for his players, through and through,” Lombardino said.

While soccer is Alexander’s primary focus, he hasn’t lost sight of the importance of being a student-athlete, especially at a small college like Edgewood.

“I’ve told a lot of recruits, even if you don’t come here and play soccer, go to school here,” said Alexander, who is practicing what he preaches by pursuing a master’s degree in Religious Studies at Edgewood. “That’s what it’s about, kids coming here and getting an education.”

Alexander said he hasn’t thought too much about the significance of the approaching milestone, which can be achieved with three more victories by the Eagles’ men. They’ll have to press to make it happen this season, as Edgewood has just two regular-season games remaining and at least one match in the NAC tournament.

Instead, Alexander gives credit to all the individuals who have helped him attain this success.

“It’s an honor to be recognized, but it’s not something that I strived to get—it just comes along with the longevity of being here,” he said. “To me it’s more about the kids; they’re the ones who go out and get the victories. They’re the ones that you’re glad to see get honored at the end of the year because they deserve it.”

“I think he’s realized over time that with the women’s team he has to be a little softer,” senior midfielder Tammi Hagensick said.

“With the men he can yell at them and that gets them fired up, but with our women’s team he has to approach it differently.”

Much of Alexander’s approach, though, is the same for both teams.

“It started out as just something fun, helping kids with something I knew,” he said. “I had just gotten done playing and thought, ‘I’ll give something back.’ The longer I stayed, the more I enjoyed it.”

2008–09 Northern Athletics Conference Scholar-Athletes MADISON, Wis. - The Northern Athletics Conference has announced its 2008–09 Scholar-Athletes, recognizing 112 full-time student-athletes from Edgewood College. Scholar-Athletes competing in the NAC must maintain a grade point average of 3.25 or higher for the current academic year. Each academic year stands by itself for determination of this award.

For the 2008–09 academic year, the cumulative grade point average of every student-athlete in the Edgewood College Athletic Department was an astounding 3.291. Twelve of the Eagles’ 14 varsity teams earned grade point averages of 3.0 or higher.

Among the women’s teams, Edgewood College’s women’s basketball team had the highest percentage of student-athletes achieve NAC Scholar-Athlete status with 10 of 11 players (90.9 percent) earning honors. The women’s soccer team, coached

by Tim Alexander, had the most Scholar-Athletes with 26. Six of the Eagles’ eight women’s teams had over 75 percent of their athletes earn a 3.25 or better grade point average.

The men’s teams were led by the track squad, coached by Bethany Brewster, who had seven of their 10 athletes (70 percent) earn the award. Alexander’s men’s soccer team had the most total athletes represented with 19.

Rose Marie (Wnek) Bertrand ’64 was nominated for the Women’s Health Hero Award which is hosted by the authors of Our Bodies, Ourselves publications. Rose Marie has served many women in the community as a doula, attending births for over 20 years. Ten years ago she founded Small Miracles Volunteer Doula Services to provide this service to those who could not afford it. She still continues in this capacity today.

He would have to ask his father on his next trip home Why there would be so much learning with nothing to show for it Not a scrap of pine shavings or even a stool Weeks and months and years the boy and then the man Stood alone in a world of words and ideas Plato, Socrates, the Psalms and St. Francis Not building as his father before him But digging down into history Into meaning Into reason And there in the depths of theory and contemplation He found a sense in the surroundings – Saw the foundation of a grand design that he knew he would be building: It would be a bridge with the craftsmanship of centuries With hand hewn tresses and lined with light For just as a carpenter’s son long before This boy now a man became a teacher First building then testing then opening the gates Guiding us across one by one – A student, daughter, son, and friend Orating the details of structure and design Explaining the meanings and the mystery of every joint Where the weight bears and leavens How it stands strong against the currents And with each journey back and forth Taking us from one side to the other From one understanding to the next From ignorance to enlightenment and back We all see, even him, the sense of all the learning Of the Jesuit traditions of introspection Of the Dominican’s service Of the temporal and the timeless Of the here and the next

This bridge he built for teachers and learners For the families he was born to and begat For the mentors and colleagues and students young and old It is not of wood or stone or brick It is a bridge of God’s only compound, which is love The mortar of age old wisdom And now we see through him and with him What true teachers and builders and fathers all know It is love that makes sense of the smallest seed Of the grandest design Of the simplest story It is love that makes sense of the theologies of ages To a carpenter’s son And a journey of learning We say thank you and thank you and thank you again For the boy, the teacher, the master carpenter too Thank you and thank you and thank you again.

Courtney Ramirez ’09 is ready for her next steps. This fall, just four months after completing her degree in Elementary Education, she began her teaching career at Leopold Elementary School in Madison. She was honored as the 2009 recipient of the Joseph E. Schmiedicke Future Educator Award.
