TWENTY YEARS of CARING Major Expansion Marks 20th Anniversary for Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, Highlighting New Services and Enhanced Community Spaces. Written by Drew Barzenick | Photos by Johnny Chauvin
W
hen Brandon and Martha Thompson began building their funeral home in 2005, the couple could not have anticipated the challenges that lay ahead. As the building neared completion, Hurricane Katrina created delays and uncertainty. Despite those obstacles, Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home opened its doors in October 2006 and has expanded to two other locations in Ponchatoula and Denham Springs. This October, the family-owned business will celebrate its 20th Anniversary while unveiling a major expansion designed to serve families in new ways. The newest expansion represents the next chapter in their growth. The project includes a state-of-the-art cremation center in their main facility. With this, a more personal experience is offered, giving families the option to participate in the cremation process if they wish.

tangi Preservation
The Art of Sculpting Without Hurting Written by Drew Barzenick | Photos byr Gabriela Acostaa
Cypress trees are among the most resilient kinds of trees, not only in Louisiana, but in the world. In 1991, George and Yvonne Ibert planted three cypress trees in their backyard in Hammond, Louisiana. Within those thirtyfive years, the Iberts’ cypress trees grew strong, just as their family and jewelry business did. In time, however, the trees became difficult to maintain. Yvonne was adamant about not cutting them down. Through a family friend, the Iberts found local artist Steve Tresvik, who offered them a solution that gave the trees a new lease on life.
12 | TangiLifestyles.com
Watching his creations come to life is one of his favorite parts of his craft. Although he has spent the last seven years completing large-scale carvings, he hopes to focus more on smaller pieces in the future so he can concentrate on finer details. Tresvik still considers carving a hobby rather than a profession, one that allows him to keep learning and creating at his own pace.
Wanting to preserve the trees while celebrating their Louisiana roots, the family asked for a Louisianathemed design. Arriving with a blueprint in hand, Steve transformed the aging cypress trees almost exactly as he had sketched them. Yvonne recalls, “We sat on the porch and accomplished nothing for a week and a half because we were so mesmerized by Steve’s craft. We couldn’t stop watching him.”
The story of the Iberts’ cypress trees is uniquely Louisiana. What could have been removed and forgotten instead became something lasting. Through Tresvik’s craftsmanship, three trees that stood watch over a family for decades now live on to tell a new story. The carvings preserve a piece of the Iberts’ history while reflecting the wildlife, culture, and character of the state they call home. Like Louisiana’s cypress trees themselves, Steve’s project is a reminder that with patience, resilience, and creativity, something old can be given new life.
Steve’s incredible attention to detail is no accident. For nearly three decades, he lived life on the go as a professionally trained culinary artist. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, the New York native attended culinary school and built a career with Hyatt Hotels that took him across the country. Along the way, he discovered a talent for ice carving, a skill that eventually led him to wood carving after retirement. Today, his chainsaw sculptures can be found throughout Louisiana’s Northshore. Tresvik says his favorite part of carving is the peace and quiet. After years of working in busy kitchens, carving allows him to slow down while still exercising the same creativity he enjoyed as a chef. He especially enjoys creating pelicans and other Louisiana-themed wildlife. August/September 2026 | 13

tangi Rivalry After sitting down with Carrie Mercke, President and CEO of OPTIONS, and Alexis Sterling, Community Outreach Coordinator, one thing became clear: Ballin’ 4 OPTIONS is about much more than basketball. Since 1973, OPTIONS has been dedicated to helping people with disabilities live, work, and thrive in the community. As a nonprofit organization serving Tangipahoa Parish for over 50 years, OPTIONS provides opportunities, support, and services that empower individuals with disabilities to reach their fullest potential. That same mission comes to life through Ballin’4 OPTIONS. What started in 2017 as a pickup game is now a major highlight for OPTIONS’ participants, their families, and the entire community.
A BASKETBALL SHOWDOWN WHERE EVERYONE GETS TO SHINE.
16 | TangiLifestyles.com
It all began when Jeff Day approached OPTIONS with a simple idea: get people moving and having fun through basketball. No one guessed it would become such a beloved tradition. Nine seasons later, the game is a high-energy showdown between the Orange Rockets and the Purple Knights. The rivalry is real—last year, the Rockets broke the tie, putting them up five games to three. What really sets BALLIN’ 4 OPTIONS apart is what happens off the court. This is more than a single game; it’s a months-long journey. Starting in June, participants hit the gym for about 15 practices leading up to the big game day in September. Community coaches, including local college and high school basketball teams, volunteer their time to work with players, building skills and confidence along the way. The whole experience is about health and wellness, and about proving that fitness is for everyone—especially those who are often left out of the conversation.
Game day is a true community celebration. The gym buzzes with excitement—cheerleaders waving pompoms, players’ names announced like NBA stars, and stands packed with friends, family, and supporters. Admission is free, and the energy and pride are contagious. It takes about 100 volunteers to pull off the event, from coaches and cheerleaders to entry staff and concession helpers. The community’s all-in commitment is what keeps BALLIN’ 4 OPTIONS thriving. And while it’s all about health and inclusion, BALLIN’ 4 OPTIONS has also become a valuable fundraiser. Funds raised through the event support the organization’s Enrichment and Transportation programs, providing individuals with disabilities access to community activities, educational experiences, and reliable transportation that fosters greater independence and inclusion. The event is made possible through the generosity of local businesses, organizations, and sponsors. For the second year in a row, the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust is proud to serve as the Presenting Sponsor for Ballin’ for OPTIONS.
But the real heart of BALLIN’ 4 OPTIONS is giving everyone a chance to shine. Many participants have never competed in a sporting event with friends and family cheering them on. The boost in confidence and community spirit is clear every year. “Sure, the competition is fierce, and the coaches get a little rowdy,” says Alexis Sterling, “but at the end of the day, it’s all about coming together as ‘one team, one heartbeat.’” Mark your calendars: this year’s game is September 19th, 1–3 p.m., at Ponchatoula’s PARD#1 gymnasium. Come for the basketball, stay for the smiles—you won’t want to miss it! For additional information about the event, contact OPTIONS at 985-345-6269 or visit options4u.org.
To put it into perspective, Carrie Mercke explained, “Options drives over half a million miles a year getting people where they need to go!”

tangi Legend parish Councilman Nick Joseph carries
in his
Written by Artie Johns Photos by Johnny Chauvin
If you’ve spent any time around Tangipahoa Parish, chances are you’ve heard the name Louis “Nick” Joseph. He’s not just a familiar face at community events and parish meetings—he’s the kind of councilman who remembers your name, listens to your concerns, and actually does something about them. Nick Joseph is the son of the late Curtis and Albertha Joseph of Sunshine, Louisiana. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. Upon discharge, he joined the Louisiana Army National Guard and retired after 34 years, holding the rank of Chief Warrant Officer – 5. Nick graduated from Southern University in 1972 with a B.S. degree and later earned a Master’s from Southeastern Louisiana University. In 2019, he was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters from Southern University for his service to his community and veterans’ affairs. He also received the People's Health Champions Award, which he is displaying, for coordinating efforts to memorialize SPC Christopher Drake, a Tickfaw native who was killed in the Iraq Freedom War, by naming a street after him. Nick moved to Tangipahoa Parish after meeting his wife, Rose. The couple has been married for 56 years and have raised three sons—Torrence, Lionel, and Ryan—and a daughter, Karen. They’re also proud grandparents to nine grandchildren. Torrence Joseph is an Educational Program Consultant for the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, State Approving Agency (SAA), Lionel Joseph is the Regional Production Operator for Entergy, and Ryan Joseph is Principal of Ponchatoula Junior High. Together, the Joseph family has built a life deeply rooted in community and service. Nick’s understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities in a rural Louisiana parish comes from years of lived experience and a true passion for helping local families. These real-life experiences continue to drive his work as a parish councilman.
20 20 || TangiLifestyles.com TangiLifestyles.com
Nick’s journey to the Council wasn’t intentional; he volunteered at local events, served as Cub Scout Master for Pack 181, Boys Scouts of America for many years and continued working with youths as the Director of Louisiana National Guard Youth Challenge Program at Carville, LA.. People soon realized that Nick was the go-to guy for fixing problems or navigating local bureaucracy. When the Council needed an interim councilman, the community turned to someone they already trusted. As Nick likes to say, “They asked me to fill in on the Council for six months —and here I am, 15 years later, still serving.” His long tenure is a testament to the community’s trust and his dedication to public service. Nick has built a reputation for accessibility and responsiveness. He answers his phone, returns messages, and believes good government starts with clear communication. Nick is also a passionate supporter of local veterans, drawing on his own military experience to help others. He’s well known for helping families navigate the VA system, ensuring local veterans receive the benefits and support they deserve. His advocacy has made a real difference for many in the community, and he remains a trusted resource for those needing guidance or assistance. Nick works closely with Council members and parish officials to secure funding for repairs and upgrades and isn’t shy about pushing for solutions when progress slows. He knows quality of life is about building a strong sense of community. That’s why you’ll find Nick at school events, church festivals, and charity fundraisers, supporting the organizations that make Tangipahoa special. For Nick, serving on the parish council is his way of giving back to the place his family calls home. And if you ask around Tangipahoa, you’ll probably hear the same thing: Nick Joseph is the real deal.

Ponchatoula native Allen Graves began his dream of joining the NBA from the courts of Ponchatoula High School — where hard work, dedication, and a passion for basketball made him the first-ever Tangipahoa resident to be drafted in the first round of the NBA. .
His performance earned himsome of the highest honors in Louisiana basketball, including Louisiana Mr. Basketball and Gatorade Louisiana Boys Basketball Player of the Year — becoming the first athlete in Ponchatoula High School history to receive the Gatorade honor. On the court, Graves was known for doing whatever his team needed. Whether it was scoring, rebounding, defending, or making the right play at the right time, he developed into the type of player every coach wants — versatile, hardworking, and committed to winning. After graduating from Ponchatoula High School, Graves continued his basketball journey at Santa Clara University, where he quickly proved that he belonged among the nation’s top young players.
Basketball has always been a major part of the Graves family. Raised by his parents, Amy and Marshall Graves, Allen and his siblings grew up in a true basketball household where competition, commitment, and a love for the game were part of everyday life. His sister went on to play basketball at Auburn, while his brother continued his career at LSU, creating a family legacy built around the sport they all loved. Growing up in a community where everyone knows your name, Graves’ journey has become more than just a personal accomplishment. It has become a moment of pride for an entire town watching one of their own chase a dream that once seemed impossible.
On a statistical level, Graves etched his name into draft lore by becoming one of the very few zero-star high school recruits to turn into a top-20 NBA draft pick. Furthermore, he defied conventional draft trends by being selected in the first round despite coming off the bench as a mid-major sixth man rather than starting. Before his name was called on the NBA stage, Graves was making a name for himself as a standout athlete at Ponchatoula High School. His high school career was filled with accomplishments, leadership, and unforgettable moments that helped put Ponchatoula Basketball on the map. During his senior season, Graves led the Green Wave to a 30-4 record and a second straight Non-Select Division I State Championship.
Standing 6-foot-8, Graves brought a unique combination of size, skill, basketball IQ, and defensive ability. During his freshman season, he averaged 11.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game while earning recognition as the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year. His ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor caught the attention of NBA scouts. What made Graves stand out was not just his physical abilities — it was his understanding of the game and his willingness to do the small things that help teams win. On June 23, 2026, Allen Graves reached the moment every young basketball player dreams about: hearing his name called in the NBA Draft. The Toronto Raptors selected Graves with the 19th overall pick in the first round, officially making the 19-year-old Ponchatoula native an NBA player. For a kid from Ponchatoula, Louisiana, the moment represented years of sacrifice, countless hours of practice, and the support of a community that believed in him from the beginning. After being drafted, Graves reflected on the overwhelming support from his hometown, sharing how much it meant to have the entire Ponchatoula community celebrating his achievement. His story is about more than basketball statistics and draft selections. It is about believing in a goal, staying committed, and representing where you come from. From the gyms of Ponchatoula High School to the bright lights of the NBA, Graves has shown that big dreams can come from small towns. His journey serves as an inspiration to young athletes across Tangipahoa Parish and beyond — proving that with determination, hard work, and heart, anything is possible. Now, as he begins the next chapter with the Toronto Raptors, one thing is certain: Ponchatoula and Tangipahoa Parish will be watching, cheering, and proudly saying, “He’s one of ours.”

Proudly supporting local athletes by hosting “Under The Hood” Saturdays 9 am - 11 am.
Roger points out that student athletes, parents, and coaches pour just as much effort into these less-heralded sports as they do the big ones. The show even shines a spotlight on activities like bass fishing and archery, featuring athletes from age 11 up to high school seniors, and sometimes even junior high and rec leagues.
Written by Blake Esta
If you’re a sports fan in Tangipahoa Parish, chances are you’ve already discovered “Under The Hood,” the beloved local sports show on Tangi 96.5. Hosted by Roger Gill, this award-winning program has quickly become a mustlisten for anyone eager to keep up with high school athletics in the area. Roger Gill knows what makes the show tick: the deep-rooted tradition of high school sports in the community. "The Big Four"—baseball, softball, basketball, and especially football— are at the heart of the program. In fact, football was the original inspiration for “Under The Hood.” But as the show grew, so did its focus. Now, you’ll find coverage on just about every sport you can imagine, from golf and volleyball to wrestling, bowling, tennis, and more.
The real magic, though, comes from the show’s commitment to going beyond the scoreboards. With its spring expansion, “Under The Hood” has started exploring what life is really like for student athletes. Roger and his team dive into the pressures these kids face—both academically and socially—giving listeners a fuller picture of their lives. The platform has also become a hub for community support, helping to promote fundraisers for schools, families, and individuals in need. So, if you’ve never tuned in before, mark your calendar for mid-August when “Under The Hood” returns live from its home base at Bill Hood. Whether you want the latest scoop on which teams are heading for championship glory or just want to hear some good-natured stories and laughs, Roger Gill and his crew have you covered. One thing’s for sure: it’s all about celebrating local talent and keeping the spirit of Tangipahoa sports alive!

As the sun sets on Friday nights in Tangipahoa and eastern Livingston Parishes, stadium lights come to life, bands start playing, and neighbors gather to celebrate one of Louisiana’s favorite traditions—high school football. While crowds pack the bleachers to cheer for their teams, plenty of folks also tune in on their radios, phones, or speakers, all thanks to Northshore Media Group.
friday night live broadcasts Keep Local Football Traditions Alive
For decades, local radio has been woven into the fabric of high school football. Before livestreams or social media, families counted on familiar radio voices to bring every touchdown, big hit, and wild comeback right into their living rooms. Northshore Media Group keeps that tradition alive, broadcasting local high school football every Friday night across our area. But these broadcasts are more than just play-byplay. They capture the stories of student-athletes, coaches, schools, and the communities that make local sports so special. Every week, those familiar voices call the action from stadiums across the region, connecting fans to their hometown teams— no matter where they are. For many, these broadcasts are a true lifeline. Grandparents who can’t make it to the games, parents working late, military folks away from home, and alumni living far off can all stay in the loop with the schools and towns they love. Thanks to local radio, the Friday night excitement goes far beyond the stadium gates. Northshore Media Group’s commitment to local sports shows just how much they care about the community. While the big networks focus on pros and college ball, local radio puts the spotlight on studentathletes who might not get much attention beyond their hometowns. Every broadcast gives these young players some well-earned recognition for their hard work and school pride.
TangiLifestyles.com 3232| | TangiLifestyles.com
And it’s not just about the players. Coaches, cheerleaders, band members, and fans are all part of the story. Pregame shows shine a light on upcoming games, standout players, and community events; postgame, it’s all about celebrating wins and reliving the best moments. The result? A complete picture of high school sports that boosts school spirit and community pride.
But maybe the best thing is how these broadcasts bring Tangipahoa Parish together. On Friday nights, everyone sets aside their differences to cheer for their schools. Whether you’re listening in Hammond, Ponchatoula, Amite, Independence, Kentwood, Loranger, Sumner, Springfield, or Albany, you’re part of the excitement and local pride.
Keeping local radio calls alive matters, especially now with so much national sports coverage everywhere. There’s just something special about hearing a local announcer call the game, knowing all the players, coaches, and hometown traditions. These voices get the rivalries and the emotions—and they become part of the memories fans keep long after the season ends.
As technology moves forward, so does Northshore Media Group. Radio still reaches more people than anything else, but now fans outside the signal area can catch the games on mobile apps—still getting all the classic radio storytelling. Blending new platforms with old-school tradition keeps local football coverage alive for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
A lot of folks still remember those legendary radio calls. The last-second touchdowns, huge playoff wins, and championship moments that brought everyone together. Northshore Media Group makes sure the next generation can make those same memories every fall.
Every Friday night, when announcers call another kickoff under the lights, they’re doing more than just calling a football game. They’re keeping tradition alive, celebrating what’s great about our towns, and helping bring our community even closer together.
There are big economic perks, too. Local broadcasts give area businesses a valuable spotlight through sponsorships and ads, helping keep the games on the air while supporting local commerce. Schools also benefit from greater visibility, which can lead to larger crowds, better fundraising, and stronger community ties.
In a world where most media is national and a little impersonal, Northshore Media Group stays focused on what matters here at home. Local high school football reminds us that some of the best stories happen right down the street—on the field, in the stands, and over the airwaves every Friday night. Tune in or grab the apps for TANGI 96.5 or KAJUN 107.1, and join in the local celebration this fall!

That remains the bar for a successful season as Amite now drops back down to class 2A and fans are hopeful that the return to 2A will also bring a return to the dome where Coach Powell has twice raised the State Trophy in 2018 and 2021.

Kentwood is very similar to Amite in terms of expectations for any given year. For many, a winning record and a home game in the playoffs spell reason to celebrate. For the Kangaroos, failing to win the district or reach the quarter-finals makes the season a disappointment. While that may be a harsh grading rubric, it's the type of challenge Coach Blount knowingly signed up for and embraces. Look for Kentwood to try and put themself right back into that conversation of premier teams in the state, like when they went to the Dome 3 of 4 years from 2015-2018.

Injuries began mounting for the Wolves at the end of the year, and while Coach Powell won't lean on that excuse, fans who watched a year ago saw a team that was 4-3 just run out of gas down the stretch, losing their final three games of the regular season. Regardless, what was left on the field was an impressive showing for a team replacing its previous head coach of nearly a quarter-century. While the Falcons may not have been able to log a victory in the record book a year ago, the program did capture arguably the most important victory in retaining their Head Coach. Four coaches came and went over the previous four years, and with Coach Nunez enforcing his commitment to be a steady presence, that's the biggest factor in getting St. Thomas back into contention for District titles. Now that the building blocks are in place, look for the Falcons to begin showing signs of progress.

No team in the area will have as many questions to be answered as the Bulldogs. After 19 seasons leading the program, Ryan Serpas stepped down in February, opening the door for wholesale changes. Tony Salim takes over as Head Coach, Hutch Gonzalez steps in as Offensive Coordinator, and former SLU Defensive Back Ian Conerly-Goodly will take the helm as Defensive Coordinator. Springfield is looking for their first winning record on the year since the 2014 season and will start the year with positive vibes for what the new look Bulldogs can accomplish.

As a proud mother, I know every parent wants the same thing— to give their children every opportunity to succeed. That’s the future I want for my own family, and it’s the future I want for every family in Hammond. As your Mayor, I’ll work to create a city where opportunity is more than a promise. By supporting job creation, strengthening partnerships in education, investing in safe neighborhoods, improving parks and recreation, and enhancing our quality of life, we can build a community where young people choose to stay, families choose to grow, and businesses choose to invest. With your vote and support, we can build a Hammond where every child has the opportunity to dream big, work hard, and succeed.

PROTECTING
Throughout the waterways that flow into Lake Maurepas, abandoned boats and large debris have become a familiar sight for many residents and boaters. Some vessels sit partially submerged along shorelines and canals, while other debris collects in hard-to-reach areas throughout the basin, creating hazards for navigation and impacting the surrounding environment. Now, a new cleanup initiative supported by Air Products’ Lake Maurepas Community Fund is helping tackle the problem. Through a $500,000 grant focused on improving and protecting local waterways, Air Products is supporting a comprehensive cleanup and litter abatement effort throughout the Lake Maurepas Basin in partnership with Osprey Initiative. The work includes removing derelict vessels and large debris from waterways, conducting targeted cleanup operations, mapping litter hotspots, and collecting environmental data to help guide future prevention efforts. The project focuses on waterways that flow into Lake Maurepas, including the Blind River, Amite River system, Tickfaw River, Natalbany River system, and Highway 51 Canal.

Protecting Lake Maurepas is important to the communities served by Air Products. Through the Lake Maurepas Community Fund, Air Products proudly supports work that keeps waterways cleaner and safer for the people, wildlife, and communities that depend on them.
Using specialized equipment, cleanup crews are able to reach difficult-access areas to safely remove abandoned boats, debris, and litter from the water. But the effort goes beyond simply removing debris already in the water. Teams will track and analyze collected litter to better understand where debris originates and help guide future strategies to reduce litter entering local waterways. Cleanup crews will sort and divert recyclable materials whenever possible. The initiative also included a pilot for rapid response capabilities where Osprey Initiative crews were mobilized following a severe storm event that impacted a local waterway, helping quickly remove debris and address hazards. Additionally, coming up, there will be a white goods collection event for residents and camp owners to sign up for water-based pickup of large items, such as refrigerators and washing machines, in areas without road access.
“The Osprey team is proud to be part of this effort,” said Osprey Initiative Founder Don Bates. “We’ve worked in these waterways for years, and this project allows us to make an even bigger impact by removing debris now while also helping identify solutions that can benefit the entire basin.”
Osprey Initiative Founder Don Bates said, “The work builds on years spent helping clean and protect Louisiana waterways.” Work on the project will continue through 2026, with ongoing cleanup activities and progress updates throughout the effort. Paid advertisement

In 2003 SLU re-started its shuttered football program. That’s when Robby came to town with a football scholarship on Hal Mumme’s inaugural team. Originally from Baton Rouge, he came to get his degree, play tight end, and move on with his life. Fate interjected when he met his wouldbe wife Caitlin Fulmer from Ponchatoula and Tangi became home when they married in 2011. Robby has been in the insurance industry since his graduation in 2006 and has owned and operated Berryland Insurance since 2018. He and Caitlin have three active children Mayson (14), Weston (12), and Roman (5). He’s a fun family guy and these are his 5 favorite things:

1
Date Nights With Cait With 3 active children and busy careers, it can be hard to find time for “us time.” That’s why Robby and Caitlin make regularly scheduled date nights a priority. They have a few favorite places, but they also enjoy finding new restaurants across the northshore.
Golf Trips With Buddies
2
Robby is a golfer who enjoys our local golf courses, but he also takes a guys’ golf trip each year. Some of his favorite courses have been Acadia Bluffs, Spyglass, Edgewood, and Pebble Beach.
3 Time With His Dogs Coaching & Supporting Kids’ Athletics Mayson plays basketball at PHS, Weston is into football and basketball and Roman is still trying to decide. No matter the sport or the child, Robby loves coaching and supporting his children’s teams.
5
After a day of working, coaching, or golfing, Robby looks forward to “unwind time” with his dogs. Practically every evening he takes Sonny (Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever) and Cher (Golden Retriever) into his in-laws’ field to chase rabbits and just run and play.
4
Annual Family Beach Trip Getting to the beach, playing in the waves, and breathing the salt air refreshes many of us during the summer, and Robby and family are no exception. Orange Beach and Destin are some of their regular spots. They’ll try out Navarre Beach this summer! August/September 2026 | 61
