I first came across Ahmed Mater’s work in 2003. Stephen Stapleton and friends wrote to me from Baghdad asking if I would publish the journal of their travels across the Middle East making art. Offscreen: Four Young Artists in the Middle East was published in 2004 and featured a collage about their encounter with the doctor-artist from Aseer. Since then Stephen and Ahmed have continued in their quest to increase understanding between the Muslim world and the West, both through Offscreen, their educational project for young people, and through Edge of Arabia, a platform for Saudi artists, curators and art enthusiasts across the international art world to share ideas and discuss possibilities.

Ahmed Mater’s work and reputation have traveled far from his homeland since his first encounter with Stephen at the Al-Meftaha Arts Village. He has managed to create a new visual language within the boundaries of his faith, culture and scientific training, and has broken new ground for contemporary art in the Arab world. on the flat, dusty rooftop of his family’s traditional house in the south west corner of Saudi Arabia. With all his reach he lifts a battered TV antenna up to the evening sky. He moves it slowly across the mountainous horizon, in search of a signal from beyond the nearby border with Yemen, or across the Red Sea towards Sudan.

He is searching, like so many of his generation in Saudi, for ideas, for music, for poetry – for a glimpse of a different kind of life.

His father and brothers shout up from the majlis (sitting room) below, as music fills the house and dancing figures appear on a TV screen, filling the evening air with voices from another world.

“This story says a lot about my life and my art” Ahmed tells me, as he installs a bright, white neon antenna into the ceiling of a warehouse gallery in Berlin. “I catch art from the story of my life,” he continues. “I don’t know any other way.”

I B N A S E E R son of Aseer Ahmed Mater was born in 1979 and raised in Rijal Alma, an Aseeri village in the bend of an expansive valley on the trade route between Yemen, Makkah and the Red Sea. Unlike much of the rest of Saudi Arabia, Rijal Alma has retained its traditional architecture and culture in the face of encroaching development. In contrast to the deserts of the East and the sprawling cities of Riyadh and Jeddah, the region of Aseer is green and mountainous, boasting the country’s highest peak, blossoming trees and rugged horizons. Aseer literally translates as ‘difficult’, which not only reflects the landscape, but also the independent spirit of its inhabitants.

The people of Rijal Alma are largely from the Tihama tribe, whose way of life Ahmed describes as similar to Yemeni culture. The Tihama are also known as the ‘flower men’, due to their custom of wearing garlands of dried herbs and flowers in their hair. The young flower men of today— traditionally considered to be one of the fiercest tribes in Arabia—look out of place amidst the fast food restaurants, shopping malls and petrol stations of modern Saudi.

But Tihama communities continue to be dominated by tribal law and customs, and have remained relatively unaffected by the oil boom and urban development that has transformed the rest of the country.

Ahmed remembers how his mother, a painter of traditional Aseeri houses and a calligrapher, introduced him to Arabian and Islamic art. From a very early age she taught him that art was a way to preserve his culture, his heritage and his religion. These traditional values became the foundation of Ahmed’s daily routine, helping to shape his philosophical approach to life.

He describes how this traditional foundation was first challenged when his family moved from Rijal Alma to Abha, the regional capital and a modern Saudi city. “The new, globalised culture made me question the values established by my conservative upbringing. I had assimilated all these ideas in my childhood; then I tried to destroy them. A dilemma arose from this turmoil and I began to explore my obedience, my religion – everything that surrounded me. All of this influenced what I call ‘the change’ and gave birth to new experiments in my art.”

At the age of 19 Ahmed enrolled as a medical student at the Abha College of Medicine. The following year he took a studio in the newly-built Al-Meftaha Arts Village, which the then Governor of Aseer, HRH Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, himself a painter and poet, had built to support local artists.

Prince Khalid’s patronage is significant; it is likely that Ahmed and his peers would not have been able to develop as artists without the physical space needed to create, exhibit and discuss their work.

It was at Al-Meftaha that Ahmed started exploring his Islamic and Aseeri identity in the context of the contemporary world, and it was here that his journey as an artist really began.

Years later Ahmed returned to Rijal Alma to celebrate his invitation to become the first Saudi artist exhibited at the British Museum. One of the village elders presented him with a bright yellow, red and black Aseeri scarf, asking him to wear it at the exhibition opening. “Ibn Aseer!” A crowd called out as he drove up the steep, winding road to Abha, about to embark on his first journey to Europe.

‫إبــن عــســـــيـر‬ ‫ولد أحمد ماطر عام ‪ ،١٩٧٩‬ونشأ في رجال ألمع وهي قرية عسيرية‬ ‫صغيرة تقع عند انحدار واد متسع على طريق تجاري بين اليمن‬ ‫ومكة المكرمة والبحر األحمر‪ .‬وعلى خالف باقي المناطق السعودية‬ ‫احتفظت رجال ألمع بنمطها المعماري التقليدي الذي صمد أمام‬ ‫اكتساح التوسع المعماري‪ .‬وعلى عكس الصحارى في الشرق‬ ‫ومدينتي الرياض وجدة المتسعتين‪ ،‬تتميز منطقة عسير بخضرتها‬ ‫وجبالها حيث تضم أعلى قمة جبلية في السعودية‪ ،‬وهي غنية‬ ‫باألشجار المزهرةالمنتشرة على السفوح الوعرة‪.‬كلمة عسير تعني‬ ‫«الصعب» وهي ال تعكس جمال الطبيعة فيها بل الروحية الفريدة‬ ‫لسكانها‪.‬‬ ‫وسكان رجال ألمع بشكل عام هم من قبائل سهول تهامة وطريقة‬ ‫حياتهم شبيهة للثقافة اليمنية‪ .‬وتعرف قبائل سهول تهامة أيضا‬ ‫بإسم «رجال الزهور» بسبب عاداتهم في وضع أكاليل الزهور‬ ‫واألعشاب العطرية الجافة بين خصالت شعورهم‪ .‬وشباب «رجال‬ ‫الزهور» اليوم – الذين يعتبرون من أكثر أبناء القبائل ضراوة ‪-‬‬ ‫مختلفون عن البيئة المحيطة بهم من مطاعم الوجبات السريعة‬ ‫واألسواق المركزية الكبيرة ومحطات البترول في السعودية‬ ‫الحديثة‪ .‬لكن كيانات تهامة االجتماعية ما زال يحكمها القانون‬ ‫والتقاليد العشائرية وبقيت غير متأثرة نسبيا بالطفرة النفطية‬ ‫والتوسع المديني الذي حدث كثيرا في بقية أجزاء البالد‪.‬‬ ‫يتذكر أحمد كيف أن أمه رسامة البيوت التقليدية العسيرية‬ ‫عرفته على الفن العربي واإلسالمي‪ .‬فمنذ سن‬ ‫والخطاطة قد‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مبكرة علّمته أن الفن هو طريقة لحفظ ثقافته‪ ،‬وتراثه ودينه‪.‬‬ ‫وأصبحت هذه القيم التقليدية أساسا إليقاع حياة أحمد ماطر اليوم‬ ‫وساعدته على صياغة رؤيته الفلسفية للحياة‪.‬‬

‫يصف كيف أن هذا االساس التقليدي واجه تحديا حين انتقل‬ ‫من رجال ألمع إلى أبها‪ ،‬العاصمة اإلقليمية والمدينة السعودية‬ ‫الحديثة‪ ،‬لدراسة الطب‪ .‬يقول أحمد معلقا‪« :‬جعلتني الثقافة‬ ‫المعولَمة الجديدة أثير أسئلة حول القيم التي تشكلت نتيجة‬ ‫لنشأتي المحافظة‪ .‬أنا كنت قد هضمت كل تلك األفكار في طفولتي؛‬ ‫ثم حاولت أن أدمرها‪ .‬إنه مأزق تصاعد من ذلك االضطراب وبدأت‬ ‫استكشف طاعتي‪ ،‬وديني ‪ -‬وكل شيء حولي‪ .‬كل ذلك أثر في ما‬ ‫أسميه بـ «التغيير» وفتح الباب لوالدة تجارب جديدة في فني»‪.‬‬ ‫في سن الثامنة عشرة أخذ أحمد استوديو في قرية الفنون يالمفتاحة‬ ‫التي أنشئت حديثاً حينها‪ ،‬وكان األمير خالد بن الفيصل أميرا لعسير‪،‬‬ ‫آنذاك وهو نفسه فنان وشاعر وكان قد بنى تلك القرية لدعم الفنانين‬ ‫المحليين‪.‬‬ ‫وأدى دعم األمير خالد ورعايته دور ًا متميزا إذ بدون ذلك ما كان‬ ‫ألحمد أو زمالئه اآلخرين فرصة للتطور كفنانين من دون الفضاء‬ ‫المادي المطلوب لإلبداع‪ ،‬وفرصة عرض ومناقشة أعمالهم الفنية‪.‬‬ ‫كانت قرية المفتاحة المكان الذي بدأ أحمد فيه استكشاف هويته‬ ‫الفنية والعسيرية ضمن سياق وجوده في العالم المعاصر‪ ،‬وكانت‬ ‫رحلته كفنان قد بدأت حقا من هنا‪.‬‬ ‫بعد سنوات عديدة رجع أحمد إلى رجال ألمع لالحتفال بدعوته كي‬ ‫يصبح أول فنان سعودي يعرض في المتحف البريطاني‪ .‬وهناك قدم‬ ‫له أحد شيوخ القرية وشاحا عسيريا يحمل األلوان األصفر واألحمر‬ ‫واألخضر وطلب منه أن يرتديه عند افتتاح معرضه‪ .‬وناداه حشد‬ ‫كبير به وهو يقود سيارته في الطريق الشديد االنحدار والمتلوي‬ ‫في طريقه إلى أبها بـ «إبن عسير» في أول زيارة له ألوروبا‪.‬‬ ‫ستيفن ستابلتون ‪ /‬لندن ‪ /‬تموز ‪2010‬‬

A C A P A C I T Y F O R W O N D E R in a time of turmoil and transformation I first met Ahmed at the Al-Meftaha Arts Village in Abha in March 2003. He was sitting in the corner of his studio in a white, ankle-length, paint-stained thawb (long shirt), and was surrounded by a sprawling collection of medical paraphernalia.

X-rays, anatomical illustrations and prescription receipts jostled for space amongst bottles of calligraphy ink, spray paint cans and books on Islamic art.

He told me how his ‘double’ life as a doctor and artist had awakened in him a creative energy and a motivation to explore humanity, in an era of religious, political and cultural turmoil. With great excitement he showed me his latest paintings; expressive layers of rich colour painted onto human X-rays, marked with religious symbols and hand-written medical notes. “An anatomy of faith in the 21st century,” is how he described them.

Ahmed’s X-ray paintings in particular became a symbol for this new group of artists, and his commitment to challenging traditional ideas and materials heralded the beginning of a contemporary art movement in Saudi Arabia.

The X-ray paintings are a raw, authentic expression of Ahmed’s world; filled with references to his hospital work, his time at the mosque and his experiences living within Arabic culture during an era defined by what he sees as “great conflict and seismic ideological change.” One painting in particular, in which the Ka’bah is crudely painted onto the heart of a human chest X-ray, left a very powerful impression on me, and was later identified by both Venetia Porter at the British Museum and Linda Komaroff at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as the work that brought Ahmed to the attention of a western audience.

These paintings were later exhibited in Jeddah as part of a radical new exhibition by the Shatta group. Shatta, meaning ‘broken up or disembodied’, was founded by a group of Al-Meftaha artists, including Abdulnasser Gharem and Ashraf Fayadh, and their work was unlike anything that had been seen before in the Kingdom. Alongside Ahmed’s X-ray paintings, other artists presented chewing-gum husks in preserve jars and burial tombs made from fast food packaging. The gallery owner was furious at these visible breaks with tradition and even the printers refused to run the exhibition catalogue.

But the response from journalists and Jeddah’s creative community was one of overwhelming enthusiasm. Features ran in all the major newspapers and the gallery had to organise special viewings to accommodate the high number of visitors.

The artists had clearly caught the imagination of a new generation, yearning to see their own thoughts and experiences reflected through art.

Ahmed has said that this painting, X-Ray 2003, changed his life. Two years after completion it was acquired by the British Museum and exhibited in Word into Art, one of the most significant surveys of Middle Eastern art in recent years.

This led to a personal endorsement from HRH King Abdullah, The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, as well as extensive exposure in Europe and across the Arabic-speaking world.

Emerging from relative obscurity, Ahmed quickly became one of the most talked about young artists in the Gulf.

Following the critical acclaim for his X-ray paintings, Ahmed continued to draw on his experiences as a doctor, a Muslim and a Saudi to develop the projects which are presented in the four chapters of this book. In each project one can recognise the fierce intellectual curiosity and courage of the young doctor and artist that award-winning writer Tim Mackintosh-Smith calls a “creative physician-metaphysician.”

Ahmed again experimented with X-rays for Illuminations, a series of mixed media works on paper in which large-scale human X-rays replace the geometric, arabesque designs normally found in the opening pages of the Qur’an. Shadowy human skeletons are surrounded by layers of religious symbols and medical references, and framed within decorative borders of gold leaf and calligraphy. The paper has been strengthened with tea, pomegranate and talc – materials traditionally used for treating the paper for Qur’anic manuscripts. One Illumination includes semi-precious stones such as turquoise, amber and carnelian, sourced from nearby Yemen, while the X-rays in Talisman Illumination I and II are surrounded by thousands of carefully ordered numbers and letters. Set within grids and squares, they reference the powerful talismanic traditions of Arabian and Islamic culture.

A number of the Illuminations also reference genetic knowledge and innovation, obliquely alluding to the patterns of human DNA. “Islamic art, and especially the mathematical harmony found in Islamic geometry, reveals natural structures and orders which are only now becoming visible to modern science,” Ahmed explains.

The Illuminations have recently been collected by major museums in the UK, America and the Gulf. Curators and critics are captivated and challenged by Ahmed’s contemporary interpretation of Islamic art – drawn in by the arresting and unresolved tension between an objective representation of the human body and a subjective expression of faith and superstition.

For Magnetism, Ahmed draws on his love of scientific experiments and research to express what he calls the “aesthetics of the spiritual.” Using the same simple magnets and iron filings he played with at school, Ahmed recreates the tawaf, the circumambulation of the Ka’bah at Makkah, which Muslims must perform during Hajj (pilgrimage). Reacting to the force of the positive and negative magnetic poles, the metal filings closest to the magnet rise up as if collectively standing in ritual adoration.

He explains, “Our parents and ancestors thought about pilgrimage and how to reach Makkah. When they returned they would say there was a magical attraction there; something irresistible drawing you in to a spiritual state of mind.”

But Evolution of Man is more than just a political statement by a child of the Saudi oil boom, it is also a statement by a doctor who confronts life and death every day, and a personal expression of the artist’s own fears, born of experience.

For the photographic record of the experiment, Ahmed scales up and zooms in on the installation, accentuating the cosmic quality of the swirling metal slivers. By offering views of the phenomenon from both near and far, he asks us to examine that which we think we know, to “discuss what’s in front of you; recognise the truth. Think about the truth.”

Ahmed explains: “I am a country man and at the same time, the son of this strange, scary oil civilisation. In ten years our lives changed completely. For me it is a drastic change that I experience every day.”

Magnetism is a powerful and deceptively simple statement.

It explores the relationship between science and faith, reminding us of the order of divine attraction at the centre of the Islamic world, and so, too, of Love: the magnet at the centre of all faiths.

Evolution of Man is a bold artistic statement. There is little doubt that the X-ray sequence depicting a gunshot suicide transforming into an oil pump is designed to provoke a strong reaction. It is likely that most people will read Evolution of Man as an unabashed critique of humanity’s dependence on oil, and what ‘black gold’ represents to those living above the reserves.

The sentiment underlying the work—that our exploitation of nature will lead to our own demise—echoes the words of Nobel Prize-winning author and poet William Faulkner, who wrote: “the ruined wood we used to know won’t cry for retribution – the men who have destroyed it will accomplish its revenge.”

Originally entitled Evolution of Man (What Darwin did not know), Ahmed recounts how the work was devised.

“I wanted to take this photo during my daily life at the hospital. I used the X-ray because for me, it is a unique force for revealing the inside. I used my friend’s gun and took this X-ray picture of myself. I don’t know why I thought about suicide...maybe because sometimes we talk about suicide with ourselves.”

Yellow Cow is a series of interventions, performances and installations inspired by a passage in the Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow), which is the longest chapter in the Qur’an.

The Surah contains many important commandments, including fasting and Hajj, but for Yellow Cow, Ahmed focuses on two key incidents between Moses and the Israelites: their fall into idolatry and God’s cryptic commandment to sacrifice a ‘perfect’ yellow cow.

Ahmed explains how as a child he read the Qur’an every day.

“The stories I heard in the Qur’an study group were the main stories of my daily life. They were like a guide.” The Surah Al-Baqarah resonated in particular with Ahmed because his family worked on a farm, where he would accompany his mother to take the cows grazing every morning.

Ahmed says he conceived of his first Yellow Cow performance just to see how people would react. He went to a farm and, using saffron-based dye, coloured a white cow yellow before setting it free in the village. He then watched the delighted reactions of the villagers, which reminded him of the stirrings of his own imagination as a child in the mosque.

Believing the Yellow Cow was as relevant now as it has ever been, Ahmed decided to “set the story free.” He wanted to release the messages held within the Surah—kept alive in mosques and Qur’anic study groups for 1300 years—into the contemporary world. In order to make the story relevant to people’s lives in the 21st century, he created a brand and initiated a ‘line extension’ of mass-produced Yellow Cow cheese, butter, yoghurt and milk products – flooding the market and giving it a material presence in people’s homes, workplaces and local shops.

Yellow Cow is not a work of art that seeks resolution. It is an ongoing project that literally and figuratively places this ancient story into contemporary consumer society. To date, the project has been realised in the art marketplace as a film, a shop installation and a series of limited edition products, all asking the same question posed by the story in the Qur’an: what is so special about this yellow cow?

The creative confidence in Ahmed’s work is particularly impressive given the lack of a precedent in Saudi Arabia, where contemporary art is still something of an underground movement, mostly practiced behind closed doors and relying heavily on patrons and supporters from abroad.

Growing up, Ahmed and his peers had almost no exposure to visual art at school or university, largely due to a belief that drawing representations of living things—along with photography and film—was irreligious. “People thought pictures were souls,” Ahmed recounts. As he developed as an artist there were no local art galleries or libraries to visit for inspiration and no specialised art shops from which to source materials.

Because of these restrictions, Ahmed, like many of his peers, pursued a professional practice alongside his artistic one.

Saudi artists are also doctors, soldiers, teachers and engineers – all drawing inspiration from their ‘real life’ careers. It is this relationship to daily working life that sets them apart from artists in the West, and, in my opinion, it is this that propels them to produce such distinctive work.

Ahmed’s experiences at the Abha hospital and as a travelling doctor in the tribal areas of Aseer greatly influence his artistic approach. He explores ideas directly connected to his encounters with ordinary people in real life situations, and because of this, his work is as authentic as it is accomplished, while his underlying narratives speak to a universal human experience.

Ahmed describes the three main axes along which his work moves as such: “the huge gap between life in a village and life in a city; the extinction of basic human relations; and the era of consumerism.” It is this ability to engage with and relate to people without abiding by borders that has brought Ahmed the respect of artists and curators not only in the Gulf, but around the world.

Since 2003 I have witnessed Ahmed’s creative journey from the mountains of Aseer through to the hectic glamour of the international art world. Over the past three years his work has been shown in major exhibitions in London, Berlin, Istanbul, Sharjah, Cairo and Venice, with acquisitions by major museums in Europe, America and the Gulf. Ahmed’s success as an artist coincides with a growing interest in contemporary art from across the Middle East and the Arab world in general, which has made him a cultural figurehead in the Gulf. In 2008, the then 28-year-old Ahmed was voted one of the 100 most influential Arabs in the world by Arabian Business magazine, and this position as a role model is something he relishes.

“As a young Saudi artist I want to be part of a creative movement which will inspire a new generation, and give them something to aspire to,” he says.

Ahmed has set up a number of local cultural initiatives, and in 2003 he and I co-founded the Edge of Arabia project to create an international platform for Saudi artists. The televised invasion of Iraq was the backdrop to our first conversations, and our shared reaction to that conflict galvanised a strong friendship and shared vision that continues to this day.

Ahmed has opened a window for me onto the landscape of a culture, a religion and a society which is often depicted in the West as one of the most closed and uninviting in the world. He is challenging that premise from the centre of the Islamic world at a time when the global community desperately needs to hear moderate voices sounding across borders – both physical and cultural. It is a great privilege to have this opportunity to reflect on an artist and a close friend who continues to inspire and challenge his audiences with intellectual courage, and a boundless capacity for wonder.

‫الــقــدرة عـلـى الـتـســاؤل‬ ‫كان أول لقاء لي بأحمد في قرية المفتاحة للفنون بأبها في مارس(آذار)‬ ‫‪ .٢٠٠٣‬كان جالسا في ركن داخل مرسمه‪ ،‬مرتديا ثوبا أبيض مبقعا‬ ‫باأللوان‪ ،‬ومحاطا بمجموعة كبيرة من األدوات الطبية‪ ،‬تتمثل بصور‬ ‫باألشعة السينية ورسوم إيضاح تشريحية ووصفات طبية تتنافس‬ ‫للحصول على مكان ما وسط زجاجات حبر الكتابة األسود‪ ،‬كذلك‬ ‫كانت هناك علب ألوان بخاخة وكتب عن الفن اإلسالمي‪.‬‬ ‫أخبرني كيف أن «حياته المزدوجة» كفنان وطبيب أيقظت فيه طاقة‬ ‫إبداعية وحافزا الستكشاف ما هو إنساني‪ ،‬خالل فترة اضطراب ديني‬ ‫وسياسي وثقافي كبير‪ .‬أراني بحماس شديد آخر رسومه‪ ،‬طبقات‬ ‫ألوان معبرة رسمت على صور بشرية باألشعة السينية‪ ،‬مع رموز‬ ‫دينية وطبع عليها عدد كبير من المالحظات الطبية‪ .‬وصف أحمد‬ ‫تلك األشكال آنذاك قائال إنها «تشريح للمتغيرات األجتماعية والثقافية‬ ‫والدينية في القرن الواحد والعشرين»‪.‬‬ ‫وتلك الرسوم ُعرضت الحقا في مدينة جدة‪ ،‬كجزء من معرض‬ ‫حداثي راديكالي جديد نظمته «مجموعة شتا»‪ .‬تأسست هذه‬ ‫المجموعة من فنانين يعملون في قرية المفتاحة للفنون بمن فيهم‬ ‫عبد الناصر غارم وأشرف فياض وعبدالكريم قاسم ومحمد خضر‪،‬‬

‫وكانت أعمالهم مختلفة عما تم عرضه من قبل في السعودية‪.‬‬ ‫وإلى جانب رسوم الصور السينية ألحمد‪ ،‬قدم فنانون آخرون لفائف‬ ‫العلكة محفوظة في جرار وقبوراً مصنوعة من أوراق رزم الوجبات‬ ‫السريعة‪ .‬كل هذه الرسوم جعلت صاحب الغاليري يغضب من‬ ‫هذه القطيعة البصرية مع التقاليد بل وحتى عمال المطبعة رفضوا‬ ‫عمل كاتالوج المعرض‪ .‬لكن الصحفيين والوسط اإلبداعي في جدة‬ ‫استقبلوا أعمال المعرض الفنية بحماس منقطع النظير‪ ،‬في وقت‬ ‫كتبت مقاالت حول المعرض في كبرى الصحف السعودية‪ ،‬وكان‬ ‫على الغاليري تنظيم زيارات خاصة لمعرض للتمكن من استقبال‬ ‫العدد الكبير من الزوار‪ .‬وكان واضحا أن الفنانين تمكنوا من شد‬ ‫مخيلة جيل جديد من الشباب يتعطش ألن يرى أفكاره وتجاربه‬ ‫منعكسة عبر الفن‪.‬‬ ‫أصبحت رسوم أحمد التي استخدمت األشعة السينية‪ ،‬بشكل‬ ‫خاص رمزا لهذه المجموعة الجديدة من الفنانين‪ ،‬وكان التزامه‬ ‫بتحدي األفكار والمواد التقليدية مبشرا ببروز الحركة الفنية‬ ‫المعاصرة في السعودية‪ .‬كانت الرسوم المتضمنة لصور األشعة‬ ‫السينية تعبيرا أصيال وفطريا لعالم أحمد المملوء بإحاالت إلى‬ ‫عمله الطبي‪ ،‬ووقته في المسجد وتجربته في العيش ضمن الثقافة‬ ‫يعرفها أحمد بأنها تشمل «أكبر نزاع وأكبر‬ ‫العربية خالل مرحلة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تحول آيديولوجي زلزالي»‪ .‬تركت إحدى لوحاته بشكل خاص علي تأثيرا‬ ‫قويا وفيها رسم الكعبة بطريقة بسيطة على قلب انسان داخل‬ ‫صورة مأخوذة باألشعة السينية‪ ،‬وهذا العمل أشارت إليه الحقا‬ ‫فنيشيا بورتر من المتحف البريطاني والدكتورة ليندا كوماروف من‬ ‫متحف لوس أنجلس كاونتري للفنون‪ ،‬وبفضله جذب أحمد اهتمام‬ ‫الجمهور الغربي له‪.‬‬ ‫قال أحمد إن هذا المشروع‪« ،‬االشعة‫ السينية ‪( »‬٢٠٠٣‬عواطف‬ ‫معدلة وراثيا)‪ ،‬قد غير حياته‪ .‬فبعد مرور سنتين على إنجازه اقتناه‬ ‫المتحف البريطاني وتم عرضه في معرض ‏‪ .Word into Art‬واعتبر‬ ‫هذا المعرض واحدا من أهم التغطيات للفن في الشرق األوسط‬ ‫في السنوات األخيرة‪ .‬وأدى هذا إلى دعم شخصي من الملك عبد‬ ‫الله بن عبد العزيز خادم الحرمين الشريفين‪ ،‬إضافة إلى انتشار‬ ‫واسع له في أوروبا والعالم العربي‪.‬‬

‫شرح أحمد كيف كان يقرأ القرآن خالل سنوات طفولته كل يوم‪،‬‬ ‫«كانت القصص التي اسمعها خالل حلقات تالوة القرآن هي‬ ‫القصص األساسية في حياتي اليومية‪ ،‬كانت اشبه بالدليل»‪ .‬وظلت‬ ‫سورة البقرة تتردد بشكل خاص في ذاكرة أحمد ألن أسرته تعمل‬ ‫في مزرعة حيث كان يرافق أمه التي تأخذ األبقار لترعى كل صباح‪.‬‬

‫قال أحمد معلقا‪« :‬أنا ابن ريف‪ ،‬وفي الوقت نفسه أنا ابن هذه‬ ‫الحضارة النفطية الغريبة والمخيفة‪ .‬فخالل عشر سنوات تغيرت‬ ‫حياتنا تماما‪ .‬وبالنسبة لي هناك تغيير حاد أشعر به كل يوم»‪.‬‬ ‫في البدء‪ ،‬كانت اللوحة تحمل اسم «تطور اإلنسان» (ما لم يعرفه‬ ‫داروين)‪ .‬شرح أحمد كيف أنه ابتكر العمل داخل المستشفيات‬ ‫السعودية‪« :‬أردت أن آخذ هذه الصورة خالل عملي اليومي في‬ ‫المستشفى‪ .‬استخدمت االشعة السينية ألنها بالنسبة لي القوة‬ ‫الوحيدة القادرة على كشف ما في الداخل‪ .‬استعملت مسدس‬ ‫لم فكرت بموضوع‬ ‫صديق وأخذت صورة أشعة لنفسي‪ .‬ال أعرف َ‬ ‫االنتحار‪ ...‬ربما ألننا أحيانا نتكلم عن االنتحار مع أنفسنا»‪.‬‬ ‫تثير وجهة النظر التي بني العمل الفني على أساسها مشاعر وأفكارا‬ ‫في أنفسنا عن كيف أن استغاللنا للطبيعة سيؤدي إلى فنائنا ‪ -‬وهي‬ ‫تحمل اصداء مما قاله وليم فولكنر المؤلف والشاعر الحائز على‬ ‫المدمرة التي كنا نعرفها لن تصرخ‬ ‫جائزة نوبل‪ ،‬حين كتب‪« :‬الغابة‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫مطالبة باالنتقام ‪ -‬الرجال الذين دمروها سيحققون انتقامها»‪.‬‬ ‫عمل «البقرة الصفراء» يتضمن سلسلة من المداخالت واألداءات‬ ‫والتركيبات المستلهمة من نص في سورة البقرة‪ ،‬التي تعتبر أطول‬ ‫سورة في القرآن‪ .‬وتحتوي السورة على وصايا عديدة من ضمنها‬ ‫الصوم والحج‪ ،‬لكن بالنسبة لـ«البقرة الصفراء» ركز أحمد على‬ ‫حدثين جمعا النبي موسى وبني إسرئيل‪ :‬سقوطهم في الوثنية‬ ‫ووصية الرب الخفية المعنى بالتضحية ببقرة صفراء «كاملة»‪.‬‬

‫وكفنان‪ ،‬جاءت فكرة أداء بقرته الصفراء األولى سعيا لمراقبة ردود‬ ‫فعل الناس تجاهها‪ .‬لذلك ذهب إلى المزرعة واستخدم طالء‬ ‫الزعفران ليصبغ بقرة بيضاء قبل إطالقها في القرية‪ ،‬ثم تابع ردود‬ ‫الفعل المبتهجة لسكان القرية‪ ،‬والتي ذكّرته بحالة جيشان مخيلته‬ ‫كطفل حين كان يذهب إلى المسجد‪ .‬ومع تحسسه بأهمية البقرة‬ ‫الصفراء اآلن مثلما كانت دائما في الماضي‪ ،‬قرر أحمد أن يبتكر‬ ‫ماركة تسمح لهذه القصة – التي بقيت حية في المساجد ومع‬ ‫الجماعات الدارسة للقرآن أللف وثالثمائة سنة ‪ -‬أن تنتشر عبر العالم‬ ‫المعاصر‪ .‬ولجعل القصة ذات صلة بحياة الناس في القرن الحادي‬ ‫والعشرين‪ ،‬شرع أحمد بإنشاء «خط إنتاج كمي» لجبن وزبدة ولبن‬ ‫وحليب تحمل شعار البقرة الصفراء يغزو السوق وإعطائه حضورا‬ ‫ماديا في بيوت وأماكن عمل الناس واألسواق المحلية‪.‬‬

‫وهكذا أصبح أحمد‪ ،‬الذي كان مغمورا لحد ما‪ ،‬وبسرعة‪ ،‬واحدا من‬ ‫أكثر الفنانين الخليجيين الشباب الذين شغلوا األوساط اإلعالمية‬ ‫والفنية‪ .‬بعد استقبال النقاد الكبير وغير المتوقع ألعماله التي‬ ‫تتضمن صورا باألشعة السينية‪ ،‬استمر أحمد باستخدام تجاربه‬ ‫كطبيب ومسلم وسعودي لتطوير مشاريع قدمت في أربعة فصول‬ ‫من هذا الكتاب‪ .‬ويمكن للمرء أن يتلمس في كل مشروع فضوال‬ ‫فكريا شديدا مع شجاعة إبداعية يحملها طبيب وفنان شجاع‪ ،‬جعلت‬ ‫الكاتب الحائز على جوائز‪ ،‬تيم ماكنتوش ‪ -‬سميث يسميه بـ «الطبيب‬ ‫الميتافيزيقي المبدع»‪.‬‬ ‫قام أحمد مرة أخرى بالتجريب على صور االشعة السينية من خالل‬ ‫استخدام الزخرفة التي تحيط بنصوص المخطوطات القديمة للقرآن‪،‬‬ ‫وتمكن من إنجاز أعمال ذات خامات فنية متعددة على الورق‪ ،‬وفيها‬ ‫حلت صور األشعة السينية البشرية محل التصاميم الهندسية‬ ‫والزخرفية العربية التي تكون موجودة عادة في صفحات القرآن‪.‬‬ ‫وهنا نجد اإلنسان محاطاً بطبقات من الرموز الدينية واإلحاالت‬ ‫الطبية‪ ،‬ضمن إطارات من الورق المذهب والخط العربي‪ ،‬والصفحة‬ ‫الشبة‪ ،‬وهذه مواد تستخدم‬ ‫تم تقهيرها بالشاي والرمان ومسحوق‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫عادة لمعالجة الورق المستخدم في مخطوطات القرآن‪ .‬وتتضمن‬ ‫إحدى الزخرفات أحجاراً كريمة مثل الفيروز والعنبر والعقيق األحمر‬ ‫القادمة من اليمن‪ ،‬في حين تظهر صور األشعة السينية في لوحتي‬ ‫«استنارات التعويذة ‪ ١‬و‪ »٢‬محاطة بآالف األرقام والحروف‪ .‬وهي‬ ‫بوجودها داخل شبكات ومربعات تشير إلى التقاليد القوية لصنع‬ ‫الطالسم في الثقافة العربية واإلسالمية‪.‬‬ ‫كذلك هناك عدد من الزخارف المطعمة بإشارات تحيل إلى بناء‬ ‫الحمض النووي البشري والخرائط الجينية‪ .‬قال أحمد شارحا‪:‬‬ ‫«يكشف الفن اإلسالمي وخصوصا التناغم الرياضي الموجود في‬ ‫الهندسة اإلسالمية عن بنى وأنساق طبيعية أصبحت مرئية فقط‬ ‫للعلم الحديث»‪.‬‬

‫اقتنت متاحف بارزة الكثير من أعمال أحمد األخيرة وهذه موزعة‬ ‫بين المملكة المتحدة والواليات المتحدة ودول الخليج‪ .‬ووجد ق ِّيمو‬ ‫المعارض والمتاحف ونقاد الفن انفسهم موضع تحد بهذا الفن‬ ‫وجذبوا إلى أعمال تتضمن توترا غير محسوم ما‬ ‫اإلسالمي المعاصر ُ‬ ‫بين التمثيل الموضوعي للجسد البشري والتعبير الذاتي عن الدين‬ ‫والمعتقدات الخرافية‪.‬‬ ‫بالنسبة لـ«المغناطيسية» استخدم أحمد ولعه بالتجارب العلمية‬ ‫وبحثه عن وسائل للتعبير سماها بـ«الجماليات الروحانية»‪.‬‬ ‫وباستخدام قطع المغناطيس البسيطة وبرادة الحديد سبق أن‬ ‫استخدمها في التجارب المدرسية‪ ،‬أعاد أحمد صياغة «الطواف»‪،‬‬ ‫المتمثل بدوران المسلمين حول الكعبة خالل موسم الحج والعمره‪.‬‬ ‫وتحت تأثير القوتين الموجبة والسالبة في قطبي المغناطيس راحت‬ ‫برادة الحديد القريبة من المغناطيس بالوقوف‪ ،‬وكأنها تقف بشكل‬ ‫جمعي ضمن طقس عبادة‪ .‬شرح أحمد قائال‪« :‬كان آباؤنا وأسالفنا‬ ‫يفكرون بالحج وكيفية الوصول إلى مكة‪ ،‬وعند عودتهم كانوا يقولون‬ ‫إن هناك جذبا سحريا فيها؛ شيئا ال يمكن مقاومته ينقل ذهنك إلى‬ ‫حالة روحانية»‪.‬‬ ‫يكبر ويقترب من أجزاء‬ ‫سمح سجل التجربة الفوتوغرافي ألحمد أن ّ‬ ‫التركيب عبر الكاميرا‪ ،‬مبرزا النوعية الكونية لدوران المعادن‬ ‫الفضية اللون‪ .‬فعن طريق توفير رؤية الظاهرة من قريب ومن‬ ‫بعيد‪ ،‬يطلب أحمد منا أن نختبر ذلك الذي نظن أننا نعرفه‬ ‫لـ«مناقشة ما هو أمامك؛ وإدراك الحقيقة‪ .‬التفكير بالحقيقة»‪.‬‬ ‫«المغناطيسية» عمل قوي ووجهة نظر تخدعنا ببساطتها‪ .‬فهو‬ ‫يختبر العالقة ما بين العلم واإليمان ويذكّرنا بنظام الجذب اإللهي في‬ ‫مركز العالم اإلسالمي‪ ،‬وهو يشير أيضا إلى الحب‪ ،‬والمغناطيس‬ ‫هو مركز كل الديانات‪.‬‬ ‫«تطور اإلنسان» بيان فني شجاع‪ ،‬وسلسلة صور األشعة السينية‬ ‫ترسم مسدسا لالنتحار بعد تحوله التدريجي من خرطوم مضخة‬ ‫بترول‪ ،‬والعمل مصمم إلثارة ردود فعل قوية‪ .‬وعلى األغلب فإن‬ ‫معظم األفراد يفسرون عمل «تطور اإلنسان» بأنه نقد صريح العتماد‬ ‫البشرية على النفط‪ ،‬وما يمثله «الذهب األسود» بالنسبة ألولئك‬ ‫الذين يعيشون بالقرب من مواقع احتياطياته‪ .‬كذلك هو تعبير‬ ‫شخصي عن مخاوف الفنانين الساكنة في أعمق أعماقهم‪.‬‬

‫ونتيجة لهذه القيود يزاول أحمد والكثير من زمالئه أعماال مهنية‬ ‫أخرى‪ ،‬جنبا إلى جنب‪ ،‬مع نشاطاتهم الفنية‪ .‬لذلك نجد الفنانين‬ ‫السعوديين يعملون أطباء وجنودا ومدرسين ومهندسين أيضا ‪-‬‬ ‫وكلهم يستلهمون من مهن «حياتهم الحقيقية»‪ .‬إنها هذه العالقة‬ ‫بحياتهم المهنية اليومية التي جعلتهم مختلفين عن الفنانين في‬ ‫الغرب‪ ،‬وفي رأيي‪ ،‬إنه بفضل هذه العالقة تمكنوا من إنتاج أعمال‬ ‫فنية متميزة كهذه‪.‬‬

‫يمكن القول إن مشروع «البقرة الصفراء» هو ليس نوعا من‬ ‫العمل الفني الذي يسعى إليجاد حل‪ .‬إنه مشروع متواصل يسعى‬ ‫إلى وضع هذه القصة القديمة بشكل ملموس ورمزي في حياة‬ ‫المجتمع االستهالكية‪ .‬وحتى اليوم‪ ،‬تحقق المشروع في سوق الفن‬ ‫كفيلم وكتركيب متجر وفي سلسلة من المنتجات ذات اإلصدارات‬ ‫المحدودة العدد‪ .‬وتطرح كل هذه المنتجات السؤال نفسه الذي‬ ‫طرحته القصة نفسها في القرآن‪ :‬ما هو الشيء المتميز جدا في هذه‬ ‫البقرة الصفراء؟‬ ‫ما يثير اإلعجاب هي تلك الثقة اإلبداعية الموجودة في أعمال أحمد‬ ‫الفنية‪ ،‬خصوصا إذا أخذنا بعين االعتبار غياب أي سابقة للفن‬ ‫المعاصر في السعودية‪ .‬فأحمد وزمالؤه من الفنانين نشأوا في بيئة‬ ‫من دون أن يشاهدوا أي فن بصري في مدارسهم أو جامعاتهم‪،‬‬ ‫وهذا يعود بالدرجة األولى لالعتقاد السائد بأن رسم األشياء الحية‬ ‫والتصوير واألفالم أشياء ال أهمية لها‪ .‬وذكر أحمد أن «الناس كانوا‬ ‫يعتقدون أن الصور هي أرواح»‪ .‬ومع تطوره كفنان‪ ،‬لم تكن هناك‬ ‫غاليريهات للفنون أو مكتبات يستطيع أن يزورها ويستلهم منها ولم‬ ‫تكن هناك محالت لشراء المواد‪.‬‬ ‫ونتيجة لذلك‪ ،‬ما زال الفن المعاصر أقرب ألن يكون حركة سرية في‬ ‫السعودية‪ ،‬تتم ممارسته وراء األبواب المغلقة في الغالب ويعتمد‬ ‫بشكل كبير على رعاة الفن وعلى الداعمين من الخارج‪.‬‬

‫يمكن القول إن تجارب أحمد في المستشفيات‪ ،‬وكطبيب متجول‬ ‫يسافر إلى المناطق النائية في عسير قد أثرت كثيرا في أسلوبه‬ ‫الفني‪ ،‬فهو يستكشف االفكار ذات الصلة المباشرة باحتكاكه مع‬ ‫الناس العاديين في أوضاع حياتية حقيقية‪ ،‬ولهذا السبب كانت‬ ‫أعماله أصيلة وبارعة في آن واحد‪ ،‬بينما يتكلم سرده المبطن عن‬ ‫تجربة إنسانية ذات بعد شمولي‪.‬‬ ‫يصف أحمد المحاور الثالثة التي تحرك أعماله الفنية قائال إنها‬ ‫تتمثل في «الفجوة الكبيرة ما بين الحياة في القرية والحياة في‬ ‫المدينة‪ ،‬وانطفاء العالقات االنسانية األولية؛ ومرحلة سيادة روح‬ ‫االستهالك»‪ .‬إنها هذه القدرة على التفاعل مع الناس والتواصل‬ ‫معهم من دون التقيد بحدود كانت وراء كسب أحمد الحترام‬ ‫الفنانين ال في دول الخليج فحسب بل في العالم أجمع‪.‬‬

‫منذ عام ‪ ،٢٠٠٣‬وأنا أتابع رحلة أحمد الفنية من جبال عسير إلى‬ ‫بريق الفن العالمي‪ .‬وخالل السنوات الثالث األخيرة قدمت أعماله‬ ‫الفنية في معارض بارزة بلندن‪ ،‬برلين‪ ،‬اسطنبول‪ ،‬الشارقة‪،‬‬ ‫القاهرة‪ ،‬البندقية ولوس أنجليس‪ ،‬في وقت اقتنت أهم المتاحف‬ ‫في اوروبا والواليات المتحدة ودول الخليج أعماله‪.‬‬ ‫ويتزامن نجاح أحمد كفنان مع تنامي االهتمام بالفن المعاصر القادم‬ ‫من منطقة الشرق األوسط والعالم العربي بشكل عام‪ ،‬مما جعله‬ ‫وجها ثقافيا رائدا في منطقة الخليج‪ .‬وفي عام ‪ ،٢٠٠٨‬تم اختيار أحمد‬ ‫ابن الثامنة والعشرين كواحد من أقوى مائة شخصية عربية مؤثرة‬ ‫في العالم‪ ،‬من خالل مجلة «أرابيان بزنس» الصادرة باإلنجليزية‪،‬‬ ‫وهذا الموقع الذي يجعله نموذجا يحتذى به وهو امر يفرحه كثيرا‪.‬‬ ‫وقال معلقا‪« :‬كفنان سعودي شاب أريد أن أكون جزءا من حركة‬ ‫خالقة قادرة على أن تلهم جيال جديدا وتمنحه شيئا ما كي يطمح‬ ‫للوصول إليه»‪.‬‬ ‫بادر أحمد بإطالق عدد من المبادرات الثقافية المحلية وفي عام ‪٢٠٠٣‬‬ ‫شاركت معه في تأسيس مشروع ‪ Edge of Arabia‬لتشكيل منبر دولي‬ ‫للفنانين السعوديين‪ .‬كانت حرب العراق المعروضة عبر شاشات‬ ‫التلفزيون هو الخلفية التي استندت إليها في أولى حواراتي مع أحمد‪،‬‬ ‫ورد فعلنا المشترك على تلك الحرب وطد صداقة قوية ورؤية مشتركة‬ ‫بيننا ظلت مستمرة حتى هذا اليوم‪.‬‬ ‫فتح أحمد لي نافذة مطلة على مشهد الثقافة والدين والمجتمع في‬ ‫منطقة توصف غالبا في الغرب بأنها واحدة من أكثر المناطق انغالقا‬ ‫في العالم ونفورا منه‪ .‬وهو يتحدى هذا التصور من مركز العالم‬ ‫أمس الحاجة‬ ‫اإلسالمي في وقت يجد المجتمع الدولي نفسه في‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫لسماع أصوات معتدلة ترتفع عبر الحدود‪ -‬بشكل حسي وثقافي‪.‬‬ ‫إنه امتياز كبير أن تتوفر لي هذه الفرصة لتأمل فنان وصديق حميم‬ ‫ما زال مستمرا في إلهام وتحدي جمهوره بشجاعة فكرية وقدرة غير‬ ‫محدودة على اإلدهاش‪.‬‬ ‫ستيفن ستابلتون ‪ /‬لندن ‪ /‬تموز ‪2010‬‬

Venetia Porter It started with X-Ray 2003. I was immediately drawn to the skeleton at the centre of the canvas; fascinated by the complexity of this remarkable painting. In museum curator mode, I attempted to decode it: the Holy Ka’bah, the focus of Muslim belief; a half circle denoting the tawaf during Hajj; a minaret; the word Allah.

Fragments from medical textbooks; a multiplicity of complex signs and symbols surrounded the central window. I tried to draw meanings from Ahmed, and he explained the work as follows: “this painting explores Mankind’s confusion of identity in the contemporary world. The X-ray, sitting on top of a deep, layered background of medical text and expressive paint represents an objective view of the individual, chosen to provoke a familiar response...My approach as a doctor has been evidence-based, influenced by a direct experience of the world.”

Ahmed was drawing on his own beliefs and culture, but also, apparently, on the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and much else besides, and his words were as complex, beautiful and elusive as his work. The single X-ray skeleton was used across the entire Illuminations series. In each piece, the ghostly shape is placed at different angles – sometimes looking straight on, sometimes turned to one side or the other. Ahmed was now finding inspiration in the Islamic art of the book, Qur’anic illumination in particular, and he used traditional methods to create frames around the X-ray, an emblem of the modern world.

The sources include other characteristics of Islamic art: geometric designs, panels of elaborate arabesques and the roundels which traditionally mark sections of the Qur’an, or which tell you when to make a prostration. These elements are typical in style to Qur’ans made for the Mamluk rulers of Egypt and Syria in the late medieval period, and although evoking the manuscript tradition, Ahmed’s Illuminations are not pastiche. At over one metre high, the paintings are bold; they make their own statement, and directly connect with the viewer.

In Talisman Illumination I, Ahmed has turned to the powerful tradition of amulets and protection in Islam to create the border. He was inspired by the talismanic shirts worn under armour in battle and popular in many parts of the Islamic world, with some of the grandest to be found in Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. The shirts are covered with what are known as magical squares and groups of single Arabic letters. These elements belong to an ancient vocabulary of magic, where letters and numbers have specific meanings and protective powers. The elaborate squares often spell out the names of God and are a sign of ultimate protection: this is good magic, and still resonates today.

As Ahmed developed his theme, the works increased in subtlety, often containing fragments of Qur’anic text. Cardiac Illumination II includes two lines in Muhaqqaq script from Surah 33 (Ahzab) verse 20: “they would wish they were in the deserts [wandering] among the Bedouins, and seeking news about you [from a safe distance]; and if they were in your midst, they would fight but a little.”

The X-ray paintings are a raw, authentic expression of Ahmed’s world; filled with references to his work in the hospital and his experience of Islamic culture

Surah Illumination I has, in tiny script, a verse from Surah 104 (Al-Nas), verse 5, which speaks of seeking refuge from “the one who whispers into the hearts of Mankind.”

Mashq X-Ray I is further abstracted, and the skeleton is at last integrated into the painting; text covers the head like the calligraphic exercises known as Mashq, for which groups of letters are pressed in from the back.

Two of the series illustrated here, Illuminations I & II, were shown at the Edge of Arabia exhibition in London, and it is worth repeating the catalogue text based on Henry Hemming’s interview with the artist, during which Ahmed explains the techniques he employed and the ideas behind the series. “They are laid out in exactly the same way as the beginning of a religious text. I have also added the word waqf beneath each one.

“This means charity. Traditionally in religious texts you have two symmetrical pages that contain abstract design.

The craftsmen would always spend a great deal of time on these opening pages; they’re the first thing you see.

“Instead of a traditional geometry I have printed two X-ray images of human torsos facing each other. I prepared the paper using tea, pomegranate, coffee and other materials traditionally used for illuminated pages of the Qur’an.

This ensures that when you come to paint on the paper, it will have an extraordinary luminous quality – the paint will truly shine. And that’s what I want to do with this piece; to illuminate. I am giving light.

“It’s about two humans in conversation, and how this encounter gives light. Dar a luz. So many religions around the world share this concept of giving light, not darkness.”

These are powerful and multilayered works, which, while touching on aspects of Islamic art, go beyond this tradition with a remarkable freshness and originality. For the British Museum, which acquires modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art, and which owns two of Ahmed’s works, this is a powerful expression of the dynamic cultural complexity that is visible in the art from this region.

Linda Komaroff Once I doubted that there was any relationship between the contemporary art world and Islamic art. My awakening to the notion that the parameters of Islamic art could be expanded to encompass contemporary works by artists from the Middle East is in fact relatively recent. My epiphany came as a direct result of the groundbreaking 2006 exhibition, Word into Art, at the British Museum, which also happily marked my introduction to Ahmed Mater. What I found in this exhibition and in Mater’s work was something both inherently familiar and terrifically original.

As with much contemporary artistic practice, Ahmed Mater is not so much reinventing Islamic art as he is repurposing it so that it becomes more clearly a vehicle for personal expression. He draws inspiration from the Islamic arts of the book, most notably manuscripts of the Qur’an, whose pages were decorated with illuminated borders, chapter headings, and verse markers. He even includes the word waqf, a notation often found in manuscripts of the Qur’an, which in legal terms designates a charitable donation, and he brings to his work the same finesse, craftsmanship and close attention to detail as would be found in a traditional Islamic manuscript produced in a courtly workshop.

Generally a small scale and intimate art form, Mater has radically expanded the scale of his illuminated page, creating instead a different sense of intimacy by using his pages to frame or incorporate a human X-ray. After all, what could be more intimate and personal than to literally see inside another person? This is most eloquently expressed in his great diptychs in which a traditional type of richly illuminated double page composition frames two X-ray sets face-toface; the skeletal images suggesting some elemental form of humanity, stripped of the skin, hair, eyes and clothes that differentiate as well as separate us. Mater also combines the human X-ray with calligraphic designs derived from talismanic shirts of the Ottoman period, as illustrated in Talisman X-Ray II. Inscribed with prayers, Qur’anic verses and magical formulas and squares filled with numbers and letters, the shirts were intended to protect the wearer from enemies and illness. When the artist superimposes the same compositions over the skeleton, they maintain their powerful apotropaic intent, but now serve to safeguard the seemingly frail human X-ray.

In a similar vein but more potent still is Mashq X-Ray I, in which the human X-ray and the text become fully engaged, one with the other. The artist has replaced the skeletal head with multi-directional calligraphy—the beginning of Surah Al-Duha, in which is called to witness the brightness of the day and the stillness of the night as evidence of the omniscience of God—written lengthwise from the bottom to the top of the face. Beneath is the X-ray chest cavity, laid bare and exposed, with the word Huwa, or, He (God) impressed from the back of the page.

There is a striking contrast between the intensity of the word-filled head and the almost tender vulnerability of the skeletal torso inscribed with its single word beneath the heart. This is an incredibly compelling composition.

While it may be up to future generations of art historians to determine which heading or label to apply to his art, Ahmed Mater demonstrates the very special ability to speak in a universal voice – but from a personal perspective. It is perhaps this universality that first drew me to Islamic art before the words were anything more than attractive, mysterious symbols. From my own present-day perspective, what makes the universality of Mater’s work even more exciting is that he is a Muslim, an Arab, and a Saudi.

‫فـيـنـيـشـــيــا بـورتــر‬ ‫ذبت مباشر ًة إلى مركز‬ ‫بدأت مع «االشعة السينية ‪ .»2003‬إذ ُج‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وبأسلوب‬ ‫اللوحة‪ ،‬مسحور ًة بتعقيدات هذه اللوحة المتميزة‪،‬‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫حاولت فك شفراته‪ .‬تحتل الكعبة الشريفة قلب‬ ‫مق ِّي ِمة متاحف‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫اللوحة‪ ،‬فهناك نصف الدائرة التي تشير إلى الطواف حولها خالل‬ ‫فترة الحج‪ ،‬مع منارة وكلمة الله‪ .‬إضافة إلى ذلك‪ ،‬هناك مقاطع‬ ‫صغيرة مأخوذة من كتب طبية‪ ،‬وعدد وافر من اإلشارات والرموز‬ ‫المعقدة التي تحيط بالنافذة القائمة في وسط اللوحة‪.‬‬ ‫حاولت أن استخرج المعنى من أحمد الذي شرح العمل هكذا‪« :‬هذه‬ ‫اللوحة تستكشف حالة التشوش التي تكتنف هوية الجنس البشري في‬ ‫العالم المعاصر»‪ .‬فأشعة أكس الساكنة فوق خلفية عميقة متعددة‬ ‫الطبقات من نص طبي ورسم تعبيري‪ ،‬تمثل رؤية موضوعية للفرد‪،‬‬ ‫الذي اختير كي يحفز على إجابة مألوفة‪ ...‬مقاربتي كطبيب استندت‬ ‫إلى دليل قائم على تجربة مباشرة للعالم‪ .‬لكن الكلمات بقيت معقدة‬ ‫وغامضة مثلما هو الحال مع العمل الفني‪ .‬يستند أحمد بعمق إلى‬ ‫عقيدته وثقافته والرسام باسكويت وأمور أخرى ويبقى هذا العمل‬ ‫جميال ومحيرا‪.‬‬ ‫تحول الهيكل العظمي إلى سلسلة اضاءات فنية‪ ،‬ال يزال في شكل‬ ‫االشعة السينية‪ ،‬حيث ِ‬ ‫المعبر عنه بواسطة‬ ‫وضع الشكل الشبحي‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫أشعة إكس بزوايا مختلفة‪ ،‬وأحيانا ينظر الهيكل مباشرة إلى‬ ‫المتلقي‪ ،‬وأحيانا أخرى يستدير إلى جهة ما‪ .‬يجد أحمد اآلن مصادر‬ ‫إلهام من فنون صنع الكتاب في اإلسالم وزخرفة حواشي صفحات‬ ‫القرآن بشكل خاص‪ ،‬وتحويلها إلى إطار األشعة السينية‪ .‬يمكن‬ ‫القول إن المصادر في أعمال ماطر قابلة لإلدراك وهي الخصائص‬ ‫ذاتها التي تنتمي إلى الفن اإلسالمي‪ :‬التصاميم الهندسية‪ ،‬أشرطة‬

‫من فن األرابيسك المتقن‪ ،‬وحلقات الزينة الناتئة التي تحدد مقاطع‬ ‫من القرآن‪ ،‬أو تلك التي تخبرك متى يجب أن تسجد‪ .‬كل هذه العناصر‬ ‫هي نموذجية من حيث األسلوب في نسخ القرآن التي تم صنعها خالل‬ ‫حكم المماليك في مصر وسوريا خالل أواخر العصور الوسطى‪.‬‬ ‫ولكن على الرغم من استحضارها لتقاليد المخطوطات القديمة‪،‬‬ ‫إال أن أعمال أحمد ال تعد بمثابة المعارضة األدبية‪ ،‬إذ تتميز هذه‬ ‫تعبر‬ ‫الرسومات التي يزيد ارتفاعها عن المتر‪ ،‬بالقوة والجرأة وهي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫عن أفكارها الخاصة وقادرة على تشكيل عالقة حميمة ما بين العمل‬ ‫الفني والمتلقي‪ .‬ففي لوحة «استنارات التعويذة ‪ »١‬تأخذنا الحدود‬ ‫باتجاه األخرى؛ فأحمد في هذا العمل الفني اتجه نحو تقليد قوي‬ ‫يتمثل في عمل التعاويذ والتمائم في اإلسالم‪.‬‬ ‫وهو مستوحى من قمصان الطالسم التي كانت ترتدى تحت‬ ‫الدروع في المعارك‪ ،‬والتي كانت شائعةً جداً في الكثير من أنحاء‬ ‫العالم اإلسالمي – يمكن إيجاد بعض من هذه المنتجات في قصر‬ ‫توبكابي باسطنبول‪ .‬وهي مغطاة بما يعرف بالمربعات السحرية‬ ‫ومجموعات من الحروف العربية المكتوبة بشكل فردي‪ .‬وهذه‬ ‫العناصر مع العالمات والرموز تنتمي إلى قاموس قديم خاص‬ ‫بالسحر حيث الحروف واألرقام لها معنى خاص وقوى حامية‪.‬‬ ‫وتشكل المربعات المتقنة غالبا أسماء الله الحسنى ولذلك فهي‬ ‫إشارة لتحقيق حماية قصوى‪ .‬وهذا هو السحر الخ ِّير الذي له‬ ‫صدى قوي موجود حتى اليوم‪.‬‬ ‫ومع تطوير أحمد للتيمة أكثر فأكثر تزداد أعماله في االتزان‪ :‬فهي قادرة‬ ‫على احتواء مقاطع من النص القرآني‪ :‬في لوحة «استنارات قلبية ‪ »٢‬تضم‬ ‫سطرين بحرف المحقق النصي من سورة األحزاب (اآليه ‪:)20‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫َان َي ْر ُجو ال َل َّه َوال َْي ْو َم‬ ‫س ِ‬ ‫س َو ٌة َح َ‬ ‫ول ال َل ِّه أ ْ‬ ‫ُم ِفي َر ُ‬ ‫نك َ‬ ‫س َنةٌ ِل َم ْ‬ ‫َان َلك ْ‬ ‫«ل َ​َقدْ ك َ‬ ‫الآْ َ ِ‬ ‫يرا»‪.‬‬ ‫َر ال َل َّه َك ِث ً‬ ‫خ َر َوذَ ك َ‬

‫تعبيرا أصيال وفطريا لعالم أحمد المملوء بإحاالت‬

‫إلى عمله الطبي‪ ،‬ووقته في المسجد وتجربته في‬

‫العيش ضمن الثقافة االسالمية‬

‫وفي لوحة «االستنارات وأنا» هناك آية مأخوذة من سورة الناس (آية‬ ‫س ِفي ُصدُ و ِر ال َّن ِ‬ ‫اس»‪ .‬وفي لوحة‬ ‫س ِو ُ‬ ‫‪ )5‬حيث تستعيذ من «ا َل ِّذي ُي َو ْ‬ ‫«مشق االشعة السينسة االولى» هناك قدر أكبر من التجريد‪:‬‬ ‫الهيكل العظمي تم دمجه أخيرا في الرسم‪ ،‬فهناك نص يغطي‬ ‫الرأس وكأنها تمارين في الخط العربي المعروف باسم «مشق»‬ ‫وهناك مجموعة حروف عربية تم ضغطها في اللوحة من ظهرها‪.‬‬ ‫تم عرض لوحتين تحمالن اسم «استنارات ‪١‬و‪ »٢‬في معرض‬ ‫‪ Edge of Arabia‬ويجدر في هذه الحالة إعادة نص المقابلة‬ ‫التي أجراها هنري همينغ مع أحمد حيث شرح فيها ما يسكن‬ ‫وراء سلسلة لوحاته‪ ،‬والتكنيك الذي استخدمه البداع تلك‬ ‫األعمال الفنية‪« :‬إنها موزعة بالضبط بنفس الطريقة التي‬ ‫«وقْ ف» تحت كل منها‪.‬‬ ‫يبدأ فيها نص ديني‪ .‬أنا أضفت كلمة َ‬ ‫وهذا يعني «عمال خيريا»‪ .‬فتقليديا توجد في النصوص الدينية‬ ‫صفحتان متناظرتان من حيث التصميم‪ ،‬وتحتويان على تصميم‬ ‫تجريدي‪ .‬وعاد ًة كان الحرفيون يقضون وقتا طويال على هاتين‬ ‫الصفحتين األوليين‪ ،‬وهما أول شيء تراه‪.‬‬

‫وبدال من الهندسة التقليدية قمت بطبع صورتي جسدين انسانيين‬ ‫قهرت الصفحة‬ ‫متقابلين وملتقطين باألشعة السينية‪ .‬وقد‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫باستخدام الشاي والرمان والقهوة ومواد أخرى تستعمل عادة مع‬ ‫هذه األنواع من الصفحات‪ .‬فباستعمالها يمكنك أن تضمن الحصول‬ ‫على صفحة ذات نوعية إضاءة خارقة للمألوف قبل البدء بعملك‬ ‫عليها‪ .‬وهذا ما يجعل رسمك مشرقا حقا‪ .‬وهذا ما أريد القيام به‬ ‫مع هذه القطعة لجعلها مضيئة‪ .‬أنا أعطي ضوءا‪ .‬إنها حول كائنين‬ ‫بشريين يتحاوران‪ .‬نحن وهم وكيف تمنح هذه المواجهة الضوء‬ ‫«دار اللوز» إذن تشترك الكثير من الديانات الموجودة حاليا في‬ ‫العالم في مبدأ منح الضوء ال للظلمة‪ .‬إنها فكرة دينية واحدة تصل‬ ‫إلى الجنس البشري من خالل نوافذ مختلفة»‪.‬‬ ‫هذه أعمال فنية قوية ومتعددة الطبقات‪ ،‬وهي بالقدر الذي تمس‬ ‫جوانب من تقاليد الفن اإلسالمي فإنها تذهب إلى أبعد من ذلك‬ ‫من حيث األصالة والجدة الجديرتان باالهتمام‪ .‬وبالنسبة للمتحف‬ ‫البريطاني فإنه يملك أعماال فنية من الشرق األوسط بما فيها‬ ‫نتاجان فنيان معروضان فيه‪ .‬يمكن القول إن أعمال أحمد هي تعبير‬ ‫قوي عن التعقيد الثقافي الديناميكي‪ ،‬وهذا ما يمكن رؤيته في فنون‬ ‫الشرق األوسط‪.‬‬ ‫فينيشيا بورتر ‪ /‬المتحف البريطاني ‪ /‬لندن ‪ /‬شباط ‪2010‬‬

‫لــيــنـدا كـومــاروف‬ ‫ساورتني لفترة شكوك إن كان هناك أي عالقة ما بين عالم الفن‬ ‫الحديث والفن اإلسالمي‪ .‬لكن قناعتي بقدرة الثوابت الخاصة بالفن‬ ‫أصبحت مقتنعة‬ ‫اإلسالمي على التوسع جاءت متأخرة‪ ،‬ومعها‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫بوجود فنانين من الشرق األوسط نجحوا في تقديم أعمال فنية‬ ‫تعكس هذه اإلمكانية‪ .‬وجاء تحولي هذا كنتيجة مباشرة لمشاهدتي‬ ‫للمعرض الضخم الذي نظمه المتحف البريطاني عام ‪ 2006‬تحت‬ ‫عنوان ‪ ،Word into Art‬والذي معه جاء تعرفي على أعمال أحمد‬ ‫ماطر‪ .‬ما وجدته في نتاج ماطر الفني هي تلك األلفة المتجذرة فيه‬ ‫مع أصالة قوية جدا‪.‬‬

‫دمج ماطر صورا بشرية مأخوذة بأشعة أكس مع تصاميم‬ ‫لخطوط عربية مأخوذة من قمصان مطلسمة تنتمي إلى العهد‬ ‫العثماني‪ ،‬مثل تقديمه للعمل «تعويذة االشعة السينية ‪.»2‬‬ ‫وكان الهدف من هذه القمصان المنقوشة بأدعية وآيات قرآنية‬ ‫وصياغات سحرية ومربعات مملوءة باألرقام والحروف‪ ،‬لباس واقي‬ ‫من األعداء والمرض‪ .‬وحين وضع الفنان نفس التشكيالت فوق‬ ‫هيكل عظمي بقيت هذه الصياغات محتفظة بقوتها الهادفة لحفظ‬ ‫مرتديها لكنها اآلن تسعى لحماية صورة بشرية هشة ملتقطة‬ ‫بواسطة أشعة أكس‪.‬‬

‫ومثلما هو الحال مع الكثير من الفنانين المعاصرين‪ ،‬فإن أحمد‬ ‫ماطر ال يقوم بإعادة ابتكار الفن اإلسالمي بقدر ما يعيد صياغة أدواتها‬ ‫كي تصبح وبشكل أكثر وضوحا أداة للتعبير الشخصي‪ .‬فالفنون‬ ‫اإلسالمية كانت مصدر إلهامه وخصوصا من المخطوطات القديمة‬ ‫للقرآن الذي كانت حواف صفحاته تزخرف بالذهب والفضة واأللوان‬ ‫الساطعة مع عناوين بارزة ومؤشرات للقراءة‪ .‬بل إنه استخدم أيضا‬ ‫كلمة «وقْ ف» التي نجدها كثيراً في مخطوطات القرآن‪ ،‬وهي الكلمة‬ ‫التي تدل من الناحية الشرعية‪ ،‬على طبيعة التبرع الخيري‪ .‬وفي‬ ‫أعمال أحمد ماطر هناك نفس الدقة والحرفية واالهتمام الكبير‬ ‫بالتفاصيل مثلما هو الحال عليه في المخطوط اإلسالمي التقليدي‬ ‫والمنتج في الورش الفنية التابعة للحكام‪.‬‬

‫وفي عمل آخر ينتمي إلى نفس المعالجة تصبح صورة أشعة أكس‬ ‫البشرية والنصوص المنقوشة حولها في حالة تفاعل متبادل‪ .‬وفيه‬ ‫عوض الفنان رأس الهيكل العظمي بخط متعدد االتجاهات وهو مطلع‬ ‫سورة الضحى من أسفل إلى أعلى الوجه‪ .‬وتحت الصدر المجوف بفضل‬ ‫اشعة أكس تسكن كلمة «هو» المبصومة من خلف الصفحة‪ .‬هناك‬ ‫تعارض جارف ما بين كثافة الرأس المملوء بالكلمات والجسم العاري‬ ‫الهش للهيكل العظمي المنقوش بكلمة واحدة تشير إلى الله «هو»‬ ‫تقع تحت القلب‪ .‬إنه تشكيل شديد الجاذبية حقا‪.‬‬

‫وإذا كان فن زخرفة مخطوطات القرآن ذا حجم صغير ويخلق شعورا‬ ‫وسع من حجم الصفحة المزخرفة بشكل جذري‪،‬‬ ‫بالحميمية فإن ماطر ّ‬ ‫مبدعا نوعا آخر من الشعور بالحميمية باستخدام صفحاته لتأطير أو‬ ‫دمج صورة بشرية ملتقطة بواسطة األشعة السينية (إكس)‪.‬‬ ‫وفي نهاية المطاف‪ ،‬ماذا يمكن أن يكون أكثر حميمية وشخصية‬ ‫من مشاهدة ما في داخل شخص آخر؟ وهذه هي أكثر لوحاته‬ ‫المزدوجة تعبيريةً وبالغةً وفيها استخدم الزخرفة التقليدية لحواف‬ ‫الصفحتين المحمولتين على اللوحين المزدوجين وفي اإلطارين‬ ‫هناك صورتان مأخوذتان بأشعة أكس لوجهين متقابلين‪ .‬وتعكس‬ ‫صورتا الهيكلين العظميين قدرا أوليا من الوجود البشري بعد نزع‬ ‫الجلد والشعر والعيون والمالبس التي هي بالقدر التي تميزنا فإنها‬ ‫تفصلنا عن بعضنا البعض‪.‬‬

‫وإذا كان تحديد أي تسمية يجب إطالقها على فن أحمد ماطر متروكا‬ ‫لألجيال القادمة من مؤرخي الفن فإن أعماله تظهر قدرة خاصة على‬ ‫التكلم بصوت عالمي لكن من زاوية رؤية شخصية‪ .‬ولعلها هذه‬ ‫الشمولية وراء ما جذبني إلى الفن اإلسالمي‪ ،‬وأنا أقف أمام كلمات‬ ‫لم تكن تعني شيئا بالنسبة لي أكثر من رموز جذابة وغامضة في آن‬ ‫واحد‪ .‬ومن زاوية رؤيتي الحالية ما يجعل أعمال ماطر ذات الطابع‬ ‫العالمي أكثر إثارة هو كونه مسلما عربيا سعوديا‪.‬‬ ‫ ‬ ‫ليندا كوماروف ‪ /‬متحف كاونتري للفنون كاليفورنيا ‪ /‬نيسان ‪2010‬‬

Tim Mackintosh-Smith The idea is simple and, like its central element, forcefully attractive. Ahmed Mater gives a twist to a magnet and sets in motion tens of thousands of particles of iron, a multitude of tiny satellites that form a single swirling nimbus. Even if we have not taken part in it, we have all seen images of the Hajj, the great annual pilgrimage of Muslims to Makkah.

Ahmed’s black cuboid magnet is a small simulacrum of the black-draped Ka’bah, the ‘Cube’ – that central element of the Meccan rites. His circumambulating whirl of metallic filings mirrors in miniature the concentric tawaf of the pilgrims and their sevenfold circling of the Ka’bah.

Al-Bayt Al-Atiq (the Ancient House), to give the Ka’bah another of its names, is ancient—indeed archetypal—in more than one way. The cube is the primary building-block, and the most basic form of a built structure. And the Cube, the Ka’bah, is also Bayt Allah, the House of the One God: it was built by Abraham, the first monotheist, or in some accounts by the first man, Adam. Its site may be more ancient still: “According to some traditions,” the thirteenth-century geographer Yaqut Al-Hamawi wrote, “the first thing God created on earth was the site of the Ka’bah. He then spread out the earth from beneath this place. Thus it is the navel of the earth and the mid-point of this lower world and the mother of villages.” The circumambulation of the pilgrims, Yaqut goes on to explain on the authority of earlier scholars, is the earthly equivalent of the angels’ circling the heavenly throne of God, seeking His pleasure after they had incurred His wrath. To this day, and beyond, the Ka’bah is a focal point of atonement and expiation; in the Qur’anic phrase, “a place of resort for mankind and a place of safety.”

Ahmed Mater’s Magnetism, however, gives us more than simple simulacra of that Ancient House of God. His counterpoint of square and circle, whorl and cube, of black and white, light and dark, places the primal elements of form and tone in dynamic equipoise. And there is another dynamic and harmonious opposition implicit in both magnetism and pilgrimage – that of attraction and repulsion. The Ka’bah is magnet and centrifuge: going away, going back home, is the last rite of pilgrimage. There is, too, a lexical parallel: the Arabic word for ‘to attract’, jadhaba, can also on occasion signify its opposite, ‘to repel’. (“In Arabic, everything means itself, its opposite, and a camel,” somebody once said; not to be taken literally, of course, although the number of self-contradictory entries in the dictionary is surprising.) And yet all this in-built contrariness is not so strange: “without contraries,” as William Blake explained, “there is no progression. Attraction and repulsion... are necessary to human existence.”

But Ahmed Mater’s magnets and that larger, Meccan lodestone of pilgrimage can also draw us to things beyond the scale of human existence, and in two directions at once – out to the macrocosmic, and into the subatomic. In the swirl of Ahmed’s magnetised particles and the orbitings of the Makkah pilgrims are intimations of the whirl of planets, the gyre of galaxies.

Hayy ibn Yaqzan, fictional brainchild of the twelfth-century Andalusian philosopher Ibn Tufayl (and perhaps both a spiritual precursor to the Mevlevi ‘whirling dervishes’ and a literary ancestor of Robinson Crusoe), made this latent link between terrestrial and celestial tawaf explicit.

Looking skyward from the island on which he had been marooned as an infant and grown to the age of reason, Hayy ibn Yaqzan observed the heavenly bodies – and then began to imitate their orbital motions, “sometimes walking or running a great many times round about his house or some stone,” in Simon Ockley’s translation of 1708, “at other times turning himself round so often that he was dizzy.”

(In a footnote, Ockley, a Cambridgeshire clergyman, thought all this “extreamly ridiculous.” His Arabic was clearly better than his metaphysics.) And, to pursue the other, inward path, into the microcosm, might not a Hayy ibn Yaqzan born into the age of particle physics find himself equally inspired by the motion of electrons? Magnetism, gravity and attractionrepulsion are necessary not just to human existence, but to the very being of the cosmos: they are what make worlds both large and small go round. Some commentators, like the literary Elizabethan Sir John Davies, have given these forces another name, more poetic but no less apt:

Perhaps then this is the conclusion to which Ahmed Mater’s Magnetism draws us: that there is a dynamic unity running through creation; that in all things the Creator—“the ordainer of order and mysticall Mathematicks,” as Dr Thomas Browne (like Dr Ahmed Mater, a creative physician-metaphysician) called Him—has set in balance the forces of pull and push and light and dark, has circled the square, and given exquisite form to inchoate matter. That, at any rate, is my conclusion, and it is why Ahmed’s works work for me; both these and the mystical anatomies of his Illuminations.

Like good poetry, they speak on a modest and graspable scale of things that are too big or too small or too mysterious to comprehend with the naked mind.

Kind nature first doth cause all things to love; Love makes them dance, and in just order move.

Look again, and you may also observe in him a touch of the Majdhub – literally, “one who has been attracted.” Here I mean it not in the debased sense it has taken on in many Arabic dialects, that of someone who is a little mad; but in the sense in which it is used in Islamic mystical texts, that of someone who has lost his personal consciousness in the knowledge of the Oneness of God. Another way to translate it might be, ‘magnetised by the divine’.

Love is what sets in motion the Mevlevi, whirling in his perfect white corolla of skirts, and the circling planet, and the circumambulating pilgrim, and the subatomic tawaf of the atom that makes it all possible.

And what of Ahmed Mater himself, giving a twist to the magnet: is there a touch of the demiurge in him – of the creator with a small c? Yes; and one cannot be an artist without that touch.

Ashraf Fayadh Lo! The first Sanctuary appointed for mankind was that at Mecca, a blessed place, a guidance to the peoples.

Surah Al-Umran (96) The Ka’bah is the most important symbol for Muslims worldwide. It is believed to have been built by the angels and later restored by Adam and his son, Set. Among those who have restored the Ka’bah were Abraham and his son Ishmael, Jurhum and the Quraishi tribes, and Hajjaj Ibn Yousif. The final restoration was undertaken during the rule of the Ottoman Sultan Murad IV in 1630 A.D. The Ka’bah was revered centuries before the rise of Islam, but the Holy Qur’an asserted its status as the first house on earth where people could commune with Allah, and since the arrival of Islam, the Ka’bah has been considered a Muslim site of prayer and pilgrimage.

The Ka’bah is the centre to which all Muslims turn their faces during the five daily prayers, and these gestures on earth emulate the rituals performed by creatures in the seven heavens, who also turn to the Ka’bah as their centre.

Pilgrims to the site circumambulate the Ka’bah in the same way that Hagar did on her journey in search of water.

Muslims follow this rite during their pilgrimages (Hajj and Umra, minor Hajj), as a way to pay respect to the site and acknowledge its historical and spiritual significance.

While an iron filing’s reaction to a magnet’s pull is something that physicists can agree on, the human need to move around a centre, standing or bowing out of respect, is often seen as an irrational or primitive urge. This reasoning does not take into account the need for security, which a centre can provide. The need for security is no less important than the need for food and drink or sex, or even the desire to eliminate need altogether.

Every creature in the universe is, by necessity, inclined to find a centre of its own choosing. The mind cannot process the idea of life disappearing into nothingness, and the idea of transformation, in itself, helps the mind feel at rest.

By finding a centre, we find a way to invoke that which is more powerful than us, and which controls our transformation from one form into another at the end of our lives.

Because we cannot communicate directly with the sacred, we create symbols to commune with that which is invisible to us; that which is greater, wiser and beyond human comprehension. The forms these symbols take are influenced by environmental factors as well as by what is highly valued and what is forbidden. Symbolism, therefore, has an important role in allowing us to express ourselves. Symbolism in Ahmed Mater’s Magnetism can be understood by its form and by the emotions it invokes, and by its allusion to a Muslim cultural heritage. The more a centre-symbol is perceived to resemble that which it symbolises, the more powerful it will be.

The magnet’s purpose is what gives it meaning. Without purpose, life has no meaning. The positive and negative poles remain stable within a central magnetic field which controls its state. This is the result of the molecules exerting their physical characteristics.

When iron filings are put near a dual-poled magnet, they gather together forming a circle around the magnet, but keep at a distance according to the rules of attraction. The iron filings incline towards stability; they are drawn towards the magnetcentre without getting too close. If they did, all stability would be lost; they would lose their ‘metallicness’.

This natural state is similar to the emotional state which prompts humans to gather together around a centre.

Though by nature each individual is the centre of himself, individuals, like iron filings, are compelled to be part of larger groups turned towards the centre. This frees us from the meaninglessness that comes with a lack of purpose.

We look to the centre to find stability.

Yet it is not the iron filings which control the distance they keep from the centre’s magnetic charges, rather, it is the magnet-centre which influences the iron filings’ movements; keeping them close but not too close, while never allowing them to move away. And it is in the metal’s constitution – is in its nature to respond to the magnet.

‫تـيـم ماكــنـتــوش سـمـيــث‬ ‫تبدو الفكرة بسيطة مثل عنصرها األساسي لكنها في الوقت نفسه‬ ‫قوية في جذبها للمتلقي‪ .‬فأحمد ماطر يجري قليال من التحوير على‬ ‫قطعة مغناطيس ليجعل عشرات األالف من جسيمات الحديد التي‬ ‫بدت وكأنها أقمار صناعية صغيرة تشكل هالة واحدة تتحرك بشكل‬ ‫دائري حول المغناطيس‪ .‬هذه الحركة تذكر بحركة مماثلة سبق‬ ‫وأن شاهدنا صورا لها خالل شعائر الحج في مكة‪ .‬تشبه قطعة‬ ‫المغناطيس التي استخدمها أحمد ماطر شكل الكعبة المكسوة‬ ‫بالقماش األسود‪ .‬وهي كما هو معروف مركز الكثير من الشعائر‬ ‫المكية التي تجري خالل الحج في مكة‪ ،‬وتقلد برادة الحديد في‬ ‫دورانها حول الجسم المكعب الذي استخدمه أحمد ماطر الطواف‬ ‫الذي يقوم به الحجاج حول الكعبة سبع مرات‪.‬‬ ‫يمكن القول إن «البيت العتيق» هو نمط بدائي بأكثر من شكل‪.‬‬ ‫فالمكعب هو كتلة بناء أولية وأكثر األشكال األساسية التي تدخل‬ ‫في تراكيب البناءات‪ .‬والكعبة «بيت الله» الذي بناه النبي ابراهيم‬ ‫أول الموحدين‪ ،‬وفي روايات أخرى بنيت الكعبة على يد أول انسان‬ ‫هو آدم‪ .‬يكتب ياقوت الحموي في القرن الثالث عشر أن أول شيء‬ ‫خلقه الله على األرض هو مكان الكعبة‪ .‬ثم من تحت ذلك المكان مد‬ ‫االرض‪ .‬فهي مركز االرض‪ ،‬وهي في منتصف المسافة ما بين العالم‬ ‫السفلي وأم القرى‪ .‬ومضى ياقوت في وصف طواف الحجاج مستندا‬ ‫إلى وجهات نظر علماء سبقوه بأن ما يجري على األرض مماثل‬ ‫لطواف المالئكة في السماء حول عرش الله‪ ،‬سعيا منها لكسب‬ ‫رضاه بعد أن جلبت غضبه عليها‪ .‬وحتى يومنا هذا‪ ،‬وما بعد‪ ،‬ظلت‬ ‫الكعبة وستظل بؤرة لطلب الغفران‪.‬‬

‫يعطينا «مغناطيسية» أحمد ماطر أكثر من صورة رمزية لـ «بيت الله‬ ‫العتيق»‪ .‬فطباقه المتمثل بالمربع والدائرة‪ ،‬بالحلزوني والمكعب‪،‬‬ ‫باللونين األسود واألبيض‪ ،‬بالضوء والعتمة‪ ،‬وباألماكن ذات الشكل‬ ‫والنبرة المتجانسين‪ ،‬كلها وضعت في حالة توازن ديناميكي‪.‬‬ ‫وهناك ديناميكية أخرى ذات تعارض متناسق كامن في الظاهرة‬ ‫المغناطيسية والحج‪ -‬وهذا هو الجذب والنبذ‪ .‬فالكعبة مغناطيس‬ ‫جاذب ومصدر نبذ في آن واحد‪ ،‬واالبتعاد عن بيت الله والعودة إلى‬ ‫الوطن هو آخر الشعائر التي يقوم بها الحاج‪.‬‬ ‫مع ذلك فإن التناقض القائم ضمن الشيء نفسه ليس غريبا جدا‪.‬‬ ‫فـ«من دون تناقضات» حسب قول ويليام بليك‪« ،‬لن يكون هناك‬ ‫تقدم‪ .‬فالتجاذب والتنافر ‪ ...‬ضروريان للوجود البشري»‪.‬‬ ‫لكن مغناطيس أحمد ماطر وحجر المغناطيس المكي األكبر‬ ‫قادران على جذبنا إلى أشياء تتجاوز مقياس رسم الوجود االنساني‬ ‫وفي اتجاهين مختلفين بشكل متزامن – على مستوى الكون وفي‬ ‫داخل الذرة‪ .‬ففي حركة الدوران التي تعكسها جسيمات أحمد‬ ‫الممغنطة وفي طواف الحجاج حول الكعبة‪ ،‬هناك تشابه بحركة‬ ‫دوران الكواكب وفي الحركة الحلزونية للمجرات‪.‬‬ ‫في قصة «حي بن يقظان» التي كتبها الفيلسوف االندلسي ابن طفيل‬ ‫نجد هناك مقارنة واضحة ما بين الطواف األرضي والطواف السماوي‪.‬‬ ‫فالبطل حي بن يقظان ينظر إلى السماء من الجزيرة التي رمي ونشأ‬ ‫فيها حتى بلوغ سن الرشد‪ ،‬فيرصد الكواكب ثم يبدأ بتقليد مسارها‬ ‫المداري‪ ،‬فأحيانا كان يمشي أو يركض عدة مرات حول بيته أو حول‬ ‫حجر ما‪ ،‬وفي أوقات أخرى كان حي بن يقظان يدور حول نفسه حتى‬ ‫يصيبه الدوار‪ .‬ولمتابعة الطريق نحو العالم الداخلي للذات فإن حي‬ ‫بن يقظان سيقلد حركة االلكترونات لو أنه عاش في الزمن الحالي‪.‬‬ ‫يمكن القول إن الظاهرة المغناطيسية والجاذبية األرضية والتجاذب‬ ‫– والتنافر ليست مهمة للوجود البشري فقط بل لكل الكون‪ ،‬فهذه‬ ‫تجعل العوالم الكبرى والصغرى تتحرك بشكل دائري‪ .‬واعطى بعض‬ ‫المعلقين مثل األديب السير جون ديفيز من العصر االليزابيثي‬ ‫اسما آخر أكثر شعرية لكن ليس أقل دقة‪:‬‬

‫الطبيعة الجميلة تجعل كل األشياء أوال في حالة حب‪،‬‬ ‫الحب يجعلها ترقص‪ ،‬وفي حركة منظمة‪ .‬‬ ‫والحب هو الذي يتحكم في رقص المريد المولوي‪ ،‬وفي الكوكب‬ ‫الذي يتحرك في مساره الدائري‪ ،‬والحاج الذي يدور في طوافه‬ ‫حول الكعبة‪ ،‬واإللكترون في طوافه حول نواة الذرة‪،‬‬ ‫ويجعل كل أنواع الطواف ممكنة‪.‬‬ ‫لعله لهذا السبب تجذبنا «لمغناطيسية» أحمد ماطر‪ :‬وجود الوحدة‬ ‫الديناميكية التي تتخلل كل الوجود‪ ،‬في كل المخلوقات التي «أمر بها‬ ‫الخالق من نظام ومن رياضيات روحية» مثلما قال الدكتور توماس‬ ‫براون (الذي هو مثل الدكتور أحمد ماطر طبيب وميتافيزيقي‬ ‫مبدع)‪ .‬وأرى أن الله قد وضع التوازن في قوى الجذب والدفع‪ ،‬الضوء‬ ‫والعتمة‪ ،‬ووضع المربع داخل دائرة وأعطى شكال متقنا للمادة‬ ‫العشوائية‪ .‬ذلك هو استنتاجي‪ ،‬وهو السبب الذي يجعل أعمال‬ ‫في – سواء أعمال «مغناطسيتيه» أم‬ ‫أحمد ماطر قادرة على التأثير ّ‬ ‫تلك التشريحات الروحية التي تعبر عن «استناراته» ‪.‬‬ ‫فمثلما هو الحال مع الشعر الجيد الذي يتكلم بمقياس متواضع‬ ‫ومفهوم عن أشياء أكبر أو أصغر أو أكثر غموضا من أن تفهم‬ ‫بالعقل المجرد‪ .‬وما أجراه أحمد ماطر من تحويرات للمغنطيس‬ ‫يحفزني على طرح هذا السؤال‪ :‬هل هناك مس للقوة الخالقة في‬ ‫داخله؟ نعم؛ وال يمكن للمرء أن يكون فنانا من دون تلك اللمسة‪.‬‬ ‫انظر ثانية‪ ،‬فلعلك ستشاهد فيه مسا من «الجذب» ال بالمعنى‬ ‫الحرفي للكلمة بل بما تعنيه بالعامية شخصا مسه الجنون قليال‪،‬‬ ‫لكن بالمعنى الذي استخدم في كتب التصوف اإلسالمي‪ .‬إنه‬ ‫فإن «المجذوب» هو الشخص الذي فقد وعيه الشخصي‬ ‫الشخص‪ّ :‬‬ ‫في معرفة وحدة الله‪ .‬إنها طريقة أخرى لترجمة ما يمكن أن يعنيه‬ ‫تعبير «المغنطة بواسطة ما هو إلهي»‪.‬‬ ‫تيم ماكنتوش سميث ‪ /‬صنعاء ‪ /‬نيسان ‪2010‬‬

‫أشـــرف فـيـاض‬ ‫اس َل َل ِ‬ ‫ض َع ِلل َّن ِ‬ ‫ت ُو ِ‬ ‫{ ِإ َّن أَ َّو َل َب ْي ٍ‬ ‫ين}‪.‬‬ ‫اركًا َو ُهدً ى ِّلل َ‬ ‫ّذي ب َِب َكّةَ ُم َب َ‬ ‫ْعال َِم َ‬ ‫سورة ال عمران ـ آيه ‪96‬‬ ‫تعتبر الكعبة الرمز األكثر أهمية بالنسبة لمعتنقي الدين اإلسالمي‬ ‫في كافة أنحاء العالم‪ ،‬ذلك البناء الذي أعيد بناؤه اثنتا عشرة‬ ‫مرة كانت األولى على يد المالئكة ثم آدم وابنه شيث مروراً بالنبي‬ ‫إبراهيم ومن ثم قبيلتي جرهم وقريش والحجاج بن يوسف وانتهاء‬ ‫بالسلطان مراد الرابع عام ‪1630‬م في عهد الدولة العثمانية‪.‬‬ ‫ونظر ًا لمكانتها التي سبقت ظهور الدين اإلسالمي بعدة قرون فقد‬ ‫عبر القرآن الكريم عن تلك األهمية بوصف الكعبة على أنها اول‬ ‫بيت وضع للناس لكي يقوموا من خاللها بالتقرب إلى الله عبر القيام‬ ‫بعدد من الطقوس التي تعلن إيمانهم بالله بالقرب من البيت الذي‬ ‫يرمز له وفق شروط ومقاييس معينة تتبع للديانة السائدة في تلك‬ ‫الفترة‪ .‬حتى جاء اإلسالم ووضع الصيغة النهائية لتلك الطقوس‬ ‫معلنا أنها قبلة المسلمين ووجهتهم أثناء أداء الصالة‪.‬‬

‫أن يتغير مزاج المغناطيس وفقاً لطريقة شحنه‪ ..‬سؤال قد يجد‬ ‫إجابة متفق عليها من قبل الفيزيائيين‪ ،‬لكن التبعية التي تخلقها‬ ‫حاجتنا للدوران حول مركز وللوقوف احتراماً له أو االنحناء احتراماً‬ ‫له أيضاً‪ ..‬أمر ال عالقة له بالفيزياء بقدر ما له عالقة بالعبثية التي‬ ‫خلقت حاجتنا للعثور على مركز‪ ،‬متجاهلين أن الشعور باألمان‬ ‫هو غريزة ال تقل أهمية عن حاجتنا لألكل والشرب‪ ..‬أو لممارسة‬ ‫الجنس‪ ..‬أو حتى لقضاء الحاجة‪ .‬في تلك األثناء قد يتصرف العقل‬ ‫بطريقة معاكسة تماماً لكل ادعاءاته الكاذبة بأنه عنصر محايد تماماً‬ ‫مثل الحيادية التي يدعيها المركز ذو المزاج المتقلب‪.‬‬ ‫لطالما ارتبطت الفكرة بالقدسية‪ ،‬فكرة أن يكون خفياً وغامضاَ‬ ‫وبعيداً عن اإلدراك الحسي‪ ،‬هي الفكرة األقرب ألن يكون مقدساً‬ ‫وقادراً على فعل ما يعجزون عنه ولو معنوياً‪ ،‬ألن الحواس لم تتمكن‬ ‫من التفاعل بشكل أفضل مع محيطها واختارت ربط مصدر طاقتها‬ ‫والتوزيع المتباين لتلك الطاقة لشيء مبهم في الخارج شيء هو‬ ‫أشد عظمة بالضرورة‪ ،‬وأكثر حكمة ويتمتع بصفات خارقة اليمكن‬ ‫للعقل اإلنساني استيعابها‪ ،‬وكان البد من وضع بعض األشكال‬ ‫المألوفة والمتعارف عليها برمزية تخضع هي األخرى لعوامل البيئة‬ ‫المؤثرة على القدرات التخيلية في العقل البشري وتفاعلها مع‬ ‫المحيط ومع المحظور والنادر والمتاح بشكل كبير‪.‬‬ ‫للرمزية في أعمال أحمد ماطر‪ ،‬دور كبير يتعلق باحتفاظنا بحق‬ ‫التعبير عن خصوصيتنا التي اكتسبناها وفق عيشنا في منظومة‬ ‫بيئية معينة تنتمي إلى نفس المكان لكن مصادرها البصرية تتفاوت‬ ‫من مكان آلخر وإن تشابهت الخصائص الفيزيائية والكيميائية‬ ‫المهيئة ألن تكون صالحة للحياة في داخلها‪ .‬مما يجعلنا نستفيد‬ ‫من التواجد ضمنها والتعبير عن ذلك التواجد في األشكال المتفق‬ ‫على تسميتها بمسميات قد تكون مستقاة من الوصف البصري أو‬ ‫التأثير الذي تخلقه عند تفاعلنا معها‪.‬‬

‫كان آباؤنا وأسالفنا يفكرون بالحج وكيفية الوصول‬ ‫إلى مكة‪ ،‬وعند عودتهم كانوا يقولون إن هناك‬

‫جذبا سحريا فيها؛ شيئا ال يمكن مقاومته ينقل‬

‫ذهنك إلى حالة روحانية‬

‫الرمزية التي تتلخص هنا في الشكل وفي األثر الذي يخلقه وفي‬ ‫التأثر العاطفي بالتراث الذي يمثل كيفية من سبقنا في التفاعل‬ ‫مع بيئته لالستفادة من تجاربه السابقة وإيماننا به وربما للتعبير‬ ‫عن امتنانا وشكرنا له كوه سبباً من أسباب وجودنا ضمن قدراته‬ ‫التي البد من اعتبارها متواضعة قياساً بممارستنا لغريزة التساؤول‬ ‫واالكتشاف‪ ..‬والفضول!‬ ‫تستخدم العاطفة أيضاً حيلة التكيف مع الزيادة أو النقص في‬ ‫الظروف المالئمة ومدى تأثرها سلباً او إيجاباً بذلك التغير الذي‬ ‫قد يتحكم في نمطية التعايش ضمن المنظومة البيئية ويجعل من‬ ‫الخروج عن الثبات أمراً مطلوباً ألن االستقرار يعتبر غاية يجب نفيها‬ ‫عند الوصول إليها لكي تستمر الدهشة وغريزة البحث والتأمل‬ ‫والتحليل‪ ،‬لكي يبقى وجودنا المجمل مبرراً بحد ذاته‪ ،‬فعندما تنتهي‬ ‫غاياتنا تكون الحياة بكافة أشكالها أمراً منافياً لكل ما هو متعارف‬ ‫عليه‪ .‬ولهذا تقوم الشحنات المغناطيسية باالستسالم ألي رد‬ ‫فعل خارجي ال يهدد وجودها الحسي والتعامل معه ضمن شروط‬ ‫كبريائها المعهود مالم يزل أثرها تماماً وهذا غير مقبول من الناحية‬ ‫العلمية‪ .‬فالتحول بمعناه الحرفي يبعث الشعور باالطمئنان لدى‬ ‫العقل ألن النهاية المقترنة بالتالشي أمر يفوق قدرة العقل على‬ ‫التصور‪ .‬لذلك نحن نشعر بارتياح اكبر لالعتقاد بأن كل شيء يتحول‬ ‫من شكل إلى آخر أو من صفة إلى أخرى لكنه ال يتالشى بشكل‬ ‫تام‪ .‬وأن من يمتلك القدرة على ذلك هو بالضرورة شخص يفوقنا‬ ‫قدرة إذا كان ذلك ممكناً‪ ،‬ونحن نميل أيضاً إلى كون ذلك ممكناً ألن‬ ‫العاطفة ترى تلك اإلمكانية!‬

‫عندما يحصل بفعل ما أن تجتمع برادة الحديد بالقرب من مغناطيس‬ ‫ثنائي القطب وتشكل دائرة منتظمة مع الحفاظ على مسافة كافية‬ ‫بعيداً ذلك الحقل المغناطيسي المستقر ‪ ،‬هي تميل لالستقرار إذاً‬ ‫ولو من ناحية معنوية تتمثل في هذه الحالة من الثبات بالقرب من‬ ‫الحقل المغناطيسي دون أن يكون لها الحق في االقتراب أكثر وإال‬ ‫فإنها ستفقد خاصيتها الفلزية وبالتالي الحق في أن تمارس غريزتها‬ ‫في البحث عن مركز والحفاظ على مسافة كافية بعيداً عنه ‪.‬‬ ‫يمارس البشر منذ البدايات المبكرة لتطور قدرتهم على التعبير‬ ‫والتكيف مع بيئتهم والتي قادتهم فيما بعد إلى السيطرة عليها‬ ‫واالستفادة بالقدر األكبر من ثرواتها‪ ،‬يمارسون الكثير من السلوكيات‬ ‫التي ربما تمنحهم الحد األدنى من االرتباط بمحيطهم مستخدمين‬ ‫قدرة العقل على التوسع كوسيلة للبحث عن غاية االستقرار وعن‬ ‫النهاية التي ستضع حداً لوجودهم الذي كان بالضرورة مقصوداً‬ ‫تماما ً مثل القصد من وراء ظهور العقل الذي يجب أن يعمل‬ ‫بشكل صحيح من خالل إيجاد أسباب لكل الموجودات حوله متناسياً‬ ‫إيجاد السبب الرئيسي لوجود هذا كله ولوجوده هو نفسه كنتيجة‬ ‫منطقية لتلك األسباب ‪.‬‬ ‫ليس العقل من يحكم برادة الحديد بجزيئاتها مختلفة األقطاب من‬ ‫أجل الوصول إلى تلك المرحلة من التفاهم فيم بينها والحفاظ على‬ ‫مسافة بينها وبين المركز المتحكم في الشحنات المغناطيسية‬ ‫التي تحركها دون التخلي عنها بشكل نهائي والخروج بعيداً‪ ،‬ليس‬ ‫العقل من يحكم هذا كله بل هي طبيعة تكوينها بصفتها تنتمي إلى‬ ‫المعدن‪ .‬لكننا المحكومون بالعقل الذي دفعنا الى التصرف بطريقة‬ ‫أكثر تطوراً عن أبناء مملكة الحيوان األخرى رغم اشتراكنا معها في‬ ‫خاصية الخضوع لقوانين‪ ،‬لكن تلك القوانين لدى الحيوانات خاضعة‬ ‫أيضاً لخصائصها التي تجبرها على التصرف بطريقة معينة تؤمن لها‬ ‫القدرة على البقاء في تلك المنظومة‪ ،‬على عكس البشر‪ ..‬وربما‬ ‫كائنات أخرى في الكون!‬ ‫أشرف فياض ‪ /‬أبها ‪ /‬حزيران ‪2010‬‬

Ahmed Al-Omran Saudis, by and large, do not believe in the theory of evolution.

Like other conservative, religious societies, Saudis have firmly rejected Darwin’s theory on the basis that human beings are perfect, state-of-the-art creations, not the result of some natural process. Ahmed Mater is a doctor by training.

He believes in evolution. But for him, evolution does not necessarily mean survival of the fittest. Sometimes, evolution can lead to one’s demise.

Saudi Arabia, founded in 1932, was a poor country with scarce natural resources. Then in 1938 oil was discovered in its deserts, and ten years later production was up to full capacity.

Petrodollars flooded the Kingdom, transforming the face of its land and giving Saudi a great deal of leverage with the international community. Interestingly, the origin of oil is connected to the theory of evolution. Oil is derived from ancient organic matter; the remains of creatures that have not survived the planet’s biological and geological changes.

Saudi Arabia did not only use petrodollars to fuel its rapid development; vast amounts of the same money were also used to promote and spread the Saudi conservative interpretation of Islam, also known as Wahhabism. But most Saudis reject this term because they believe they are simply practicing Islam in its purest form, and also because they think the term has been used unfairly to slander their religion and their country.

Whether they agree with the term or not probably matters little now, because some of the ideas that originated in Saudi have, in recent years, come to shake the world.

Mater’s Evolution of Man brings to my mind the boom and bust economic cycle – but with a Saudi twist. The oil money used to build the Kingdom’s cities and modernise the infrastructure was not always used to develop minds or modernise ways of thinking. Allowing the conservatives to control education and media paved the way for the rise of some dangerous ideas, which eventually resulted in violence outside and inside the country, including attempts to bomb vital Saudi oil production facilities.

What I like about Mater’s use of X-rays is how they turn everything into bare-bone structures; you can go under the skin, explore the essence behind the facade. I also like how the piece is so full of energy: the sequence, the movement, the seamlessness, the lack of a starting or end point. All of this produces a lively interaction between the viewer and the artwork.

This richness, however, does not always manage to displace some of the dark thoughts that crossed my mind when I first saw the piece. True, I am cynical and pessimistic, but I think it goes beyond that; it comes from something within the work itself.

In our hungry world, greed is a sure way to an easy self-destruction. The constant desire for more is depleting whatever is left of our limited resources, not only the material ones but our emotional reserves as well. We spend a great deal of time acquiring everything we can get our hands on.

To what end? During your lifetime on earth you can only consume so much. When death comes knocking at your door, such ‘consumer’ choices become meaningless. Do you get to choose how and when you die? Would it make any difference if you did?

You can choose how and when you die if you decide to kill yourself. Suicide is strongly prohibited by Islam but this, of course, does not stop some Muslims from killing themselves, which, although religiously frowned upon, is still a personal matter.

In the end, it’s up to us, the people. It’s up to every single one of us. We have the right to live peacefully, and that’s why it’s our duty to be responsible, not reckless. It should be our mission to build, not destroy. It’s time to take matters into our own hands and reclaim this right. We can no longer afford to live in constant, nagging fear.

So let us start changing. Let us make the right choices.

Let us choose life over death, peace over conflict and hope over fear. Let us do it now.

‫أحــمـــد الـعـمـران‬ ‫ال يؤمن السعوديون بشكل عام بنظرية التطور‪ .‬ومثلما هو الحال مع‬ ‫المجتمعات المتدينة األخرى ذات الطابع المحافظ‪ ،‬فإن السعوديين‬ ‫رفضوا بشدة نظرية داروين من منطلق أن البشر كائنات كاملة‪،‬‬ ‫أبدعها الله على أفضل حال ال نتيجة لعملية تطور طبيعية معينة‪.‬‬ ‫أحمد ماطر طبيب باالختصاص‪ ،‬وهو يؤمن بالتطور‪ ،‬لكن التطور‬ ‫بالنسبة إليه‪ ،‬ال يعني بالضرورة البقاء لألفضل‪.‬‬ ‫فالتطور قد يؤول أحيانا إلى موته‪.‬‬ ‫تأسست المملكة العربية السعودية عام ‪ 1932‬وكانت بلدا فقيرا مع‬ ‫مصادر طبيعية نادرة‪ .‬ثم جاء النفط الذي تم اكتشافه عام ‪ 1938‬في‬ ‫الصحارى‪ ،‬وبعد مرور عشر سنوات أخرى أصبح إنتاج النفط بأعلى‬ ‫خت ثروات مالية هائلة في عروق السعودية مما‬ ‫طاقته‪ ،‬ومعه ُ‬ ‫ض َّ‬ ‫أعطاها دفعا قويا كي تحتل موقعا مميزا داخل المجتمع الدولي‪.‬‬ ‫من المفارقة‪ ،‬أن أصل النفط له عالقة بنظرية التطور‪ .‬فالنفط‬ ‫مشتق من مواد عضوية قديمة‪ ،‬وهو يعتبر لذلك من بقايا كائنات‬ ‫لم تتمكن من البقاء بيولوجيا أمام التحوالت الجيولوجية التي شهدها‬ ‫كوكب األرض آنذاك‪.‬‬

‫والسعودية لم تستخدم الثروات المالية المتأتية من النفط لتغذية‬ ‫تطورها المتسارع فحسب‪ ،‬بل أن هناك جزءا من هذه الثروة‬ ‫ِّ‬ ‫خصص للترويج ونشر التفسير األكثر محافظة لإلسالم والمتمثل‬ ‫بالمذهب الوهابي‪ .‬لكن معظم السعوديين يرفضون هذا الوصف‬ ‫ألنهم ببساطة يعتبرون أنفسهم ممارسين لإلسالم في أكثر اشكاله‬ ‫نقاوة وألنهم يظنون أيضا أن هذا المصطلح قد استخدم بطريقة غير‬ ‫منصفة لتشويه سمعة دينهم وبلدهم‪ .‬وبغض النظر عما إذا كانوا‬ ‫يقبلون أو ال يقبلون بالمصطلح فإن ذلك قد ال يمتلك أهمية كبيرة‬ ‫اآلن‪ ،‬ألن بعض األفكار األكثر تطرفا التي نبعت من هنا قد تمكنت أن‬ ‫تهز العالم رعبا خالل السنوات األخيرة‪.‬‬ ‫هذا العمل الفني يذكرني بدورات االزدهار واإلفالس التي يمر‬ ‫االقتصاد بها‪ ،‬لكن مع تحوير سعودي‪ .‬فاألموال المتأتية من النفط‬ ‫قد أنفقت على إنشاء مدن سعودية وتحديث البنى التحتية‪ ،‬لكنها‬ ‫لم تستخدم دائماً لبناء العقول وتحديث طريقة تفكيرهم‪ ،‬حيث‬ ‫سمح لرجال الدين بالسيطرة على التعليم واإلعالم مما فتح الطريق‬ ‫لصعود التطرف الذي توج في األخير بهجمات إرهابية في خارج‬ ‫وداخل البلد‪ ،‬بما فيها محاوالت لتفجير مرافق نفطية حيوية‪.‬‬ ‫ما يعجبني حقا في استخدام أحمد ماطر لالشعة السينية هو كيف‬ ‫أنها تحول كل شيء إلى مجرد تركيبات عظمية محض‪ .‬فأنت تمضي‬ ‫تحت الجلد منقبا عما هو جوهري وراء الواجهة‪.‬‬ ‫فهنا نرى السلسلة والحركة والتجانس مع غياب أي بداية أو نهاية في‬ ‫العمل‪ .‬كل هذه العناصر خلقت تفاعال مفعما بالحيوية يصعب على‬ ‫العين عدم اكتشافها‪.‬‬

‫مع ذلك‪ ،‬فإن غنى كهذا لم يقدرعلى منع بروز بعض األفكار السوداء‬ ‫في ذهني‪ .‬صحيح أنني شخص متشائم‪ ،‬لكني أظن أن العمل يمضي‬ ‫إلى أبعد مما فيه‪ ،‬لذلك فإن مشاعري هي انعكاس لما تضمنه العمل‬ ‫الفني نفسه‪ ،‬عند مشاهدتي إياه للمرة األولى‪ ،‬أكثر من أي شيء آخر‪.‬‬ ‫في عالمنا الجائع‪ ،‬أصبحت الشراهة هي الطريقة المضمونة لتحقيق‬ ‫التدمير الذاتي السريع‪.‬‬ ‫الرغبة الدائمة الستنزاف أكثر لما بقي في حوزتنا من مصادر‬ ‫محدودة‪ ،‬ال ماديا فقط بل عاطفيا‪ .‬نحن ُنمضي قسطا كبيرا من‬ ‫الوقت في امتالك كل شيء نفكر فيه وتستطيع أيادينا الوصول‬ ‫اليه‪ .‬لكن ماذا بعد؟‬ ‫خالل شوط عمرنا القصير على األرض‪ ،‬نحن نستطيع أن نستهلك‬ ‫الكثير‪ .‬لكن حين يطرق الموت بابنا‪ ،‬تصبح االختيارات خالية من‬ ‫المعنى‪ .‬فهل يمكننا أن نختار كيف نموت؟ وهل ذلك سيغير‬ ‫أي شيء؟‬

‫لعل اختيار كيفية الموت ال يتأتى إال عندما تقرر قتل نفسك‪ .‬لكن‬ ‫االنتحار محرم في اإلسالم‪ .‬وهذا بالتأكيد‪ ،‬لن يمنع بعض المسلمين‬ ‫من قتل انفسهم‪ .‬إذ على الرغم من أنه ممقوت دينيا فإنه يبقى‬ ‫مسألة شخصية‪ .‬لكن الحال ال يكون هكذا أحيانا‪ .‬خصوصا حينما‬ ‫يؤدي االنتحار إلى قتل أناس عديدين‪ ،‬بمن فيهم أشخاص أبرياء‬ ‫صادف أن يكونوا متواجدين في مكان االنتحار‪.‬‬ ‫إنه ألمر مأساوي‪ ،‬لكن ذلك هو العالم الذي نعيش فيه اليوم‪ .‬فثورة‬ ‫االتصاالت التي أمل الكثير من الناس بأنها ستعزز الفهم بين مختلف‬ ‫الشعوب والديانات واآليديولوجيات قد استخدمها المتطرفون لنشر‬ ‫رسالتهم في الكراهية والعنف‪ .‬نحن بالتأكيد ال نستطيع أن نلوم‬ ‫التكنولوجيا فهي في األخير ليست سوى أداة يمكن استخدامها‬ ‫لصالح البشرية مثلما يمكن استخدامها ألغراض شريرة محضة‪.‬‬ ‫وفي نهاية المطاف‪ ،‬األمر متروك لنا‪ ،‬نحن البشر‪ ،‬فهو يعتمد‬ ‫على كل فرد منا‪ .‬فنحن نملك الحق في العيش بسالم ولذلك فإنه‬ ‫واجب علينا أن نكون مسؤولين ال متهورين‪ .‬إنها مهمتنا أن نبني ال‬ ‫أن ندمر‪ .‬حان الوقت ألن نأخذ األمور بأيدينا‪ ،‬ونسترجع هذا الحق‪.‬‬ ‫فمع قصر أعمارنا على األرض يصبح عسيرا علينا أن نظل تحت‬ ‫وطأة خوف دائم ومنغص‪ .‬لذلك فلنبدأ بتغيير الحال‪ ،‬لنبدأ باختيار‬ ‫ما هو صحيح‪ ،‬لنبدأ باختيار الحياة على الموت‪ ،‬السلم على النزاع‪،‬‬ ‫واألمل على الخوف‪ ،‬لنبدأ اآلن‪.‬‬ ‫أحمد العمران ‪ /‬الرياض ‪ /‬نيسان ‪2010‬‬

Aarnout Helb 67. And [remember] when Musa [Moses] said to his people: “Verily, Allah commands you that you slaughter a cow.”

They said, “Do you make fun of us?” He said, “I take Allah’s Refuge from being among Al-Jahilun [the ignorant or the foolish].” 68. They said, “Call upon your Lord for us that He may make plain to us what it is!” He said, “He says, ‘Verily, it is a cow neither too old nor too young, but [it is] between the two conditions,’ so do what you are commanded.” 69. They said, “Call upon your Lord for us to make plain to us its colour.”

He said, “He says, ‘It is a yellow cow, bright in its colour, pleasing to the beholders.’” 70. They said, “Call upon your Lord for us to make plain to us what it is. Verily to us all cows are alike, And surely, if Allah wills, we will be guided.” 71. He Musa [Moses] said, “He says, ‘It is a cow neither trained to till the soil nor water the fields, sound, having no other colour except bright yellow.’” They said, “Now you have brought the truth.”

So they slaughtered it though they were near to not doing it.

Do not trust only the calcium. It is in the milk we drink for the sanity of our bones, but we need stories to have sanity in our lives, and elegant ways of digesting their meaning.

Ahmed Mater understands this simple literacy which is often forgotten by science and the visual arts. His understanding is on my desk in Amsterdam, in the form of a container of Arabian yoghurt. On it he has specified the daily calcium needs for every age group, but also a “special probiotic culture which contributes positively to overall health and helps to maintain a healthy digestive system.”

This reminds us that all the stories which enter our minds come out again, eventually. Probably more so in a country such as Saudi Arabia, where a single book is so central to everyday life.

Ahmed Mater has made a rich work of art; a non-commercial dairy shop full of real ideas that may help sustain humanity for a century as much as yoghurt, milk, butter and cheese do for a day. Yellow Cow products came to my attention in the Netherlands while I was reading the Qur’an in search of something that might relate to the visual arts. The story that first caught my attention was about this odd-coloured cow which God instructed Moses’ people to sacrifice. The story acknowledges this simple fact: humans, whether they live in the vicinity of Makkah or in Amsterdam, have eyes as well as ears and may take pleasure in what they see—even attach themselves to a pleasantly-coloured cow or a handsome car— but in the end, they will have an overriding wish to dwell in the company of truth.

Ahmed believes the people in this story were a bit slow finding the truth. It took them a while to decide on sacrifice, and they asked too many questions about the cow, increasing their demands on God as we increase our demands on the material world in consumer societies. But I wonder, were the people demanding to know more so different from a doctor in search of evidence for a true diagnosis?

Not all art is about truth. Yellow Cow products is. Ahmed Mater is. His relationship with truth will be attributed by some to his profession as a medical doctor practicing ‘evidence-based medicine’ and to his heritage as a Muslim. But he might have just been one of those boys who flip stories around to see if their mirror image reflects the truth as well. And smiles.

So, I understand Ahmed took a childhood story from his mosque and renewed it, gave it attention anew by wondering what would have happened if the cow had not been sacrificed.

From the artwork we can assume the cow would have lived on to become a range of consumer products. By choosing to be a change-manager in a dairy shop, Ahmed turns the ‘arrogant’ consumer products industry to his advantage by reminding us of the original story. For this he returned to the farm with a bucket of paint, bringing a real yellow cow to life and to the imagination. This is a magnificent act of love allowed only to artists: painting your own evidence in support of the truth.

I pride myself now on having told visitors to the Greenbox Museum in Amsterdam—many of whom would never have thought of reading the Qur’an—the story of the yellow cow.

I was able to do so because the artist loaned the museum several of his Yellow Cow products. In this shipment were yoghurts or “fresh laban” containers, several plastic milk bottles, silver-wrapped salted butter and many circular boxes of spreadable cheese.

Among the cheese I discovered a final artistic touch. It was a modest brochure about a whole new concept of art.

Crossing over from his profession in medicine, Ahmed Mater named this new vision “evidence-based ART.” He defined it only broadly as a concept for the East, but it should interest the museum industry in the West as well. It replaces the authority of art history and its teachers with a new paradigm that says every enlightened individual may be an artist, capable of capturing truth within the framework of his own human experience. As a collector you may get lost in this new paradigm. As a man of truth you may grow fat.

And it’s very funny. Ahmed appreciates the excellent relationship between humour and truth. Truth is like a rock, very different from any castle chiselled from rock by man.

If you make fun of a castle it may open its gates; if you make fun of a rock, it will remain unmoved. Muslims will understand. Ahmed understands.

‫ال تثق بأي شيء سوى الكالسيوم‪ .‬إنه في الحليب الذي نشربه وفيه‬ ‫تكمن سالمة عظامنا‪ ،‬لكننا في حاجة إلى قصص ترسخ سالمة العقل‬ ‫في حياتنا‪ ،‬وطرائق جميلة تساعد على هضم معناها‪.‬‬ ‫يدرك أحمد ماطر هذا الجانب األدبي البسيط الذي طالما تناسته‬ ‫العلوم والفنون البصرية‪ ،‬ففهمه المتجسد في عمله الموضوع على‬ ‫مكتبي في أمستردام‪ ،‬كان على شكل وعاء خاص باللبن المنتشر‬ ‫في شبه الجزيرة العربية‪ ،‬وفيه حدد حاجتنا للكالسيوم اليوم ولكل‬ ‫األعمار‪ ،‬لكن هناك حاجة أخرى تتمثل في «ثقافة خاصة لصالح ما هو‬ ‫حيوي يساهم بشكل إيجابي في تحسين الصحة بشكل عام‪ ،‬ويساعد‬ ‫على الحفاظ على نظام هضم صحي»‪.‬‬

‫يذكّرنا هذا الفهم بكل القصص التي تتسرب إلى أذهاننا ثم تخرج‬ ‫أخيرا منها‪ .‬ولعل ذلك يتحقق أكثر في بلد مثل السعودية حيث‬ ‫يشكل كتاب واحد أساسا لكل الحياة اليومية‪.‬‬ ‫تمكن أحمد ماطر من تحقيق إنجاز فني غني‪ ،‬إذ قد يساعد محل‬ ‫ألبان غير تجاري مملوء باألفكار على دعم البشرية خالل قرن‪ ،‬مثلما‬ ‫تفعل منتجات كاللبن والحليب والزبدة والجبنة خالل يوم واحد‪.‬‬ ‫أثارعمل «البقرة الصفراء» الفني الصادر في عام ‪ ٢٠٠٧‬انتباهي في‬ ‫هولندا‪ ،‬إذ جاء خالل قراءتي للقرآن بحثا عن شيء ما له عالقة‬ ‫بالفنون البصرية‪ .‬وأول قصة جلبت انتباهي هي تلك المتعلقة بالبقرة‬ ‫الصفراء الغريبة التي أمر الرب شعب موسى أن يضحوا بها‪ .‬تعترف‬ ‫القصة بهذه الحقيقة البسيطة‪ :‬للبشر‪ ،‬سواء أولئك الذين يعيشون‬ ‫في مكة أو أمستردام‪ ،‬عيون وآذان‪ ،‬ولعلهم يستمتعون بما يرونه‪،‬‬ ‫بل حتى ينشدّ ون إلى بقرة ملونة تبهج األبصار مثلما هو الحال عند‬ ‫رؤية سيارة أنيقة‪ ،‬لكنهم‪ ،‬في نهاية المطاف‪ ،‬ستكون لديهم أمنيات‬ ‫طاغية للوصول إلى الحقيقة‪.‬‬ ‫يرى أحمد أن الناس في هذه القصة كانوا بطيئين في الوصول إلى‬ ‫الحقيقة‪ ،‬إذ استغرق وصولهم إلى قرار بتقديم التضحية وقتا طويال‪،‬‬ ‫وظلوا يطرحون أسئلة كثيرة حول البقرة‪ ،‬رافعين معها سقف‬ ‫طلباتهم من الرب مثلما نفعل نحن اليوم من خالل زيادة عدد طلباتنا‬ ‫من العالم المادي في المجتمعات االستهالكية‪.‬‬ ‫غير أني اتساءل ما إذا كان هناك أي فرق بين مساعي الناس‬ ‫للحصول على معرفة أكثر وبين مسعى طبيب يبحث عن أدلة قاطعة‬ ‫لتشخيص حقيقي لمرض ما‪.‬‬

‫وإذا كان الفن ال يدور فقط حول الحقيقة‪ ،‬فإن نتاج «البقرة‬ ‫الصفراء» ال يدور إال حولها فقط‪ ،‬وكذلك هو الحال مع أحمد ماطر‪.‬‬ ‫يؤول البعض عالقته بالحقيقة إلى مهنته كطبيب يمارس‬ ‫فقد‬ ‫ِّ‬ ‫«الطب على أساس األدلة»‪ ،‬ولإلرث الذي يحمله كمسلم‪ .‬لكنه قد‬ ‫يكون واحدا من أولئك الصبيان الذين ينقبون في القصص لكي يروا‬ ‫إن كانت الصور التي تعكسها تحمل في طياتها الحقيقة أيضا وقادرة‬ ‫على رسم االبتسامة‪ .‬لذلك‪ ،‬فأنا أرى أحمد وهو يأخذ قصة سمعها‬ ‫عند طفولته من مسجده ويقوم بتجديدها‪ ،‬وجلب االنتباه إليها من‬ ‫خالل تأمل ما كان يمكن أن يحدث لو لم تتم التضحية بالبقرة‪.‬‬ ‫من العمل الفني يمكننا أن نفترض أن البقرة ستعيش كي تتحول‬ ‫إلى منتجات استهالكية‪ .‬فعن طريق اختيار دور المدير لمحل ألبان‪،‬‬ ‫يحول أحمد في أعماله صناعة المنتجات االستهالكية «المغرورة»‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫لصالحه وذلك بتذكيرنا بالقصة األصلية‪ ،‬ولهذا الغرض‪ ،‬رجع إلى‬ ‫المزرعة مع سطل من الطالء‪ ،‬ليجلب بقرة صفراء حقيقية إلى‬ ‫الحياة والى المخيلة‪ .‬وهذا فعل من أفعال الحب التي ال يستطيع‬ ‫أن يقوم بها إال الفنانون‪ ،‬أن تصبغ دليلك بالطالء كي تدعم الحقيقة‪.‬‬

‫وهي مرحة جدا‪ .‬فأحمد يقدر العالقة العليا ما بين الدعابة والحقيقة‪.‬‬ ‫الحقيقة كالصخرة‪ ،‬مختلفة تماما عن قصر نحته االنسان من الصخر‪.‬‬ ‫وإذا ما هزأت من القصر فإنه قد يفتح بواباته أمامك‪ ،‬لكنك إذا هزأت‬ ‫من صخرة فإنها لن تتأثر قط‪ ،‬لذلك فإن المسلمين سيفهمون ذلك‬ ‫مثلما فهمه أحمد‪.‬‬ ‫أفتخر اآلن بأني حكيت قصة البقرة الصفراء لزوار متحف غرينبوكس‬ ‫في أمستردام‪ ،‬إذ أن أغلبهم لم يقرأ القرآن‪ .‬وما جعلني قادرا على‬ ‫القيام بذلك هو إعارته المتحف بعضا من نتاجاته التي يتضمنها عمله‬ ‫الفني «البقرة الصفراء»‪.‬‬ ‫في هذه الدفعة هناك أواعي «لبن طازج» وعدة زجاجات حليب مع‬ ‫كمية من قطع الزبدة المملحة الملفوفة بورق فضي والعديد من‬ ‫العلب المستديرة للجبنة الطرية‪.‬‬ ‫بين علب الجبن وجدت بصمة فنية أخرى‪ ،‬وكانت عبارة عن كتيب‬ ‫سمى‬ ‫يدور حول مفهوم جديد كليا للفن‪ .‬فانطالقا من مهنته كطبيب‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫أحمد ماطر‪ ،‬هذه الرؤية الجديدة بـ«الفن المستند إلى األدلة»‪ .‬فهو‬ ‫عرفه فقط بشكل عام باعتباره مفهوما خاصا للشرق‪ ،‬لكنه من الالزم‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫أن يجد اهتماما أيضا لدى المنظمين النشطة المتاحف في الغرب‪.‬‬ ‫فهذا المفهوم قادر على أن يبدل سلطة تاريخ الفن وأساتذته بنموذج‬ ‫جديد يقول إن كل شخص متنور قابل ألن يكون فنانا‪ ،‬وقادرا على‬ ‫اإلمساك بالحقيقة ضمن اإلطار الفني لتجربته االنسانية‪ .‬ولعلك‬ ‫كجامع لألعمال الفنية ستجد نفسك ضائعا في هذا النموذج الجديد‪،‬‬ ‫لكنك كانسان باحث عن الحقيقة فإنك قد تتغذى به‪.‬‬ ‫أرنوت هيلب ‪ /‬متحف غرينبوكس ‪ /‬أمستردام ‪ /‬آذار ‪2010‬‬

L I F E A N D W O R K 1979 | Ahmed Mater Al-Ziad Aseeri is born in Tabuk, a largely military city in the north west of Saudi Arabia on the Jordanian border. He is the first child of Mater Ahmed Al-Ziad, a Sergeant in the Saudi Arabian army, and Fatimah Hassan Abdullah Aseeri, a painter of traditional Aseeri houses and a calligrapher. Ahmed will eventually have two brothers, Bandar and Mohammed, and four sisters, Aisha, Jawaher, Jamila and Reem.

1981 | Ahmed and his family move to Rijal Alma, his father’s village in the mountainous Aseer region of south west Saudi Arabia. They live in a small, traditional stone house perched on a steep-terraced hillside.

The house’s interior is decorated by Ahmed’s mother in vividly-coloured geometric designs, painted in the traditional Aseeri style. Ahmed’s daily life is dominated by his involvement with a Qur’anic study group, helping his parents on the farm and traditional village activities.

1985 | Ahmed is photographed for the first time for his primary school enrolment. He later reflected, “I don’t have many pictures of myself as a child nor of my parents – nothing that can remind me of my childhood.

To take a picture was considered against religion or haraam.”

1994 | Ahmed and his family move to a modern house in Abha, the regional capital of Aseer, where he completes his school studies.

This move from the village to the city has a substantial impact on Ahmed’s view of the world, and he begins to question the traditional beliefs of his childhood.

1998 | Ahmed enrols as a medical student at King Saud University, Abha College of Medicine, to study medicine and surgery.

1999 | Ahmed joins the Al-Meftaha Arts Village, part of the King Fahd Cultural Centre, under the patronage of HRH Prince Khalid Al-Faisal.

Prince Khalid offers Ahmed a studio and supports all the artists working there by providing materials, workshops in photography and painting, and helping to organise their first exhibitions. Ahmed studies under a number of teachers, including pioneering Saudi artists Dr Abdul Halim Radawi and Dr Hassan Obaid, as well as Dr Ahmed Baqer from Bahrain, Dr Rashid Diab from Sudan and Dr Mustafa Abdel-Moti from Egypt.

2000-2002 | Ahmed participates in a series of traditional and contemporary painting exhibitions including Landing on the Earth’s Surface at Al-Maseef Cultural Club in Abha. He wins a series of prizes including the Abha Cultural Prize for Fine Art and Photography. In 2000 Ahmed meets HRH The Prince of Wales, who takes up residence in Al-Meftaha while painting watercolours of the surrounding landscape. His studio at no. 9 is opposite Ahmed’s at no. 7.

2003 | Ahmed creates and exhibits his first X-ray paintings at Al-Meftaha.

They are chosen for the 6th Saudi Malwan Contest and exhibited in Jeddah, Beirut, Sidon and Manama. Ahmed meets British artist Stephen Stapleton in Abha and they begin a friendship and creative collaboration which will eventually lead to the founding of Edge of Arabia.

2004 | Ahmed shows his X-ray paintings at a radical exhibition in Jeddah, organised by the newly-formed Shatta group of artists. The exhibition challenges existing parameters of art practice in the Kingdom, and is widely discussed and reported on in the media. Ahmed exhibits increasingly conceptual work and performances including The End, Chewing, Standing in Front of You, and So Far You Are From the Earth. A portrait of Ahmed in front of X-Ray 2003 features in the book Offscreen: Four Young Artists in the Middle East, published internationally by Booth-Clibborn Editions.

2005 | Ahmed works in the emergency room of Aseer Central Hospital throughout the final year of his medical training. Group exhibitions include the Al Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial (UAE), the 3rd Shatta group exhibition (Jeddah) and a Saudi Arts delegation to Tunisia. Ahmed wins the Al-Meftaha Photography Prize for Aseer from the Air, a book of aerial photographs of the region commissioned by Prince Khalid Al-Faisal.

Stephen Stapleton brings X-Ray 2003 to London and shows it to Venetia Porter, Curator of Islamic and Middle Eastern Art at the British Museum.

2006 | Ahmed graduates with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S) from King Khalid University, Abha College of Medicine, and works as a resident doctor at Aseer Central Hospital.

His X-Ray 2003 painting is bought by the British Museum and included in Word into Art, the most comprehensive survey exhibition of contemporary Middle Eastern artists ever held in Europe. Ahmed travels to London for the opening and is invited by the Saudi Ambassador to exhibit paintings and photographs at the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia. On the back of Mater’s inclusion in Word into Art comes a burst of publicity and upon his return to Saudi, HRH King Abdullah flies to Abha to meet the artists of Al-Meftaha. While there, he publicly praises Ahmed as an important cultural role model for young Saudis. Ahmed also takes part in a delegation of Saudi photographers to Japan and Singapore and founds Ibn Aseer (Son of Aseer), a collective of Abhabased artists and designers.

2007 | Ahmed is invited by the US State Department to take part in the International Visitor Leadership Program in Washington, D.C. The programme takes him across America and includes courses on politics, the media, education and the arts. X-Ray 2003 is exhibited in Word into Art in Dubai and Ahmed is invited to present his Yellow Cow project for the first time at the 8th Sharjah Biennale, Still Life: Art, Ecology and the Politics of Change. He meets pioneering Emirate artist, Hassan Sharif, who has a major influence on his conceptual approach. Ahmed becomes the face of Mobily, Saudi’s largest mobile phone company, appearing in a TV commercial celebrating his life as an artist and doctor living in Aseer.

2008 | Ahmed co-curates and exhibits new works in Edge of Arabia: Contemporary Art from Saudi Arabia, at the SOAS Brunei Gallery in London. The show coincides with the launch of an accompanying book and website, the first ever comprehensive guides to contemporary art from the Kingdom. Ahmed exhibits his first Illumination diptych and Talismanic Illumination, and his work is widely discussed in the British and Arabic media. Illumination I is used to promote Edge of Arabia in a city-wide, London Underground advertising campaign, and he gives a talk about his work at the University of London alongside Dr Venetia Porter, Dr Geoffrey King and Peter Sanders. Ahmed exhibits Evolution of Man for the first time at the 11th Cairo Biennale. Back in Saudi, he continues to work as a G.P. and marries fellow artist Arwa Yahya Al Neimy. He moves out of his family’s home and leaves the Al-Meftaha Arts Village. For the first time, he has his own house and studio.

2009 | Ahmed is invited by Catherine David to participate in the 53rd Venice Biennale as part of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) Platform for Visual Arts. David presents an interview with Ahmed in a historic exhibition at the Arsenale, the first ever presentation of Gulf artists at the official Venice Biennale. At the same time, Ahmed co-curates Edge of Arabia in the Palazzo Polignac on the Grand Canal, where he exhibits Magnetism for the first time. He has his first solo show, Illumination, at ArtSpace Gallery in Dubai, and is voted number 62 in the ‘Power 100’ ranking of the world’s most influential Arabs by Arabian Business magazine.

2010 | In January Ahmed gives a keynote lecture about his life and work at the Louvre Auditorium in Paris, as part of Catherine David’s Gulf Artists Programme. He spends much of the first part of the year working with the World Health Organization (WHO) on the militarised border between Yemen and Saudi, treating injured soldiers from both sides of the conflict. In June he presents Evolution of Man and new works, Antenna and CCTV at Grey Borders/Grey Frontiers, the new Edge of Arabia show in Berlin, curated by Rami Farook. Ahmed speaks in conversation with Greenbox Museum Founder Aarnout Helb at a symposium on Saudi Art at the Berlin Akademie der Künste, and features on the cover of several German newspapers holding his hand to his head like a gun in front of Evolution of Man. In October he presents his first major solo show and launches this book at the Vinyl Factory Gallery in London’s Soho.

‫في تنظيم فعالية جانبية خاصة بمؤسسة «حافة الجزيرة العربية» في باالتزو‬ ‫بوليناك في غراند كانال‪ ،‬حيث عرض عمله «المغناطيسية» ألول مرة‪ ،‬ثم قام‬ ‫بعرض منفرد لـ«زخارف» في «غاليري فضاء الفن» بدبي‪ ،‬واختير واحدا من أكثر‬ ‫المائة شخص مؤثر في العالم العربي حيث احتل الموقع الثاني والستين حسب‬

‫مجلة «آرابيان بزنس» التي تصدر باالنجليزية‪.‬‬

‫‪ :٢٠١٠‬ألقى أحمد في يناير(كانون الثاني) محاضرة تكلم فيها عن حياته وأعماله‬ ‫الفنية في متحف اللوفر بباريس‪ ،‬كجزء من برنامج فناني الخليج الذي نظمته‬

‫كاثرين ديفيد‪ .‬وقضى الجزء األكبر من السنة يعمل مع منظمة الصحة‬

‫العالمية على الحدود الفاصلة بين اليمن والسعودية ذات الحضور العسكري‪،‬‬

‫‪ :٢٠٠٧‬دعت وزارة الخارجية األميركية أحمد ماطر للمشاركة في «برنامج‬

‫معالجا الجنود الجرحى من كال الجانبين نتيجة للنزاع المسلح‪ .‬وفي يونيو‬

‫عبر الواليات المتحدة وتضمن دورات في السياسة واإلعالم والتعليم والفنون‪.‬‬

‫تليفيزيونيه مغلقه» في معرض «حدود رمادية»‪ ،‬وقدمت مؤسسة «حافة‬

‫القيادة للزائرين الدوليين» بالعاصمة األمريكية واشنطن‪ .‬وأخذه البرنامج‬

‫‪ :٢٠٠٨‬شارك أحمد كق ِّيم للفن وعرض أعماال جديدة في معرض «حافة‬ ‫الجزيرة العربية»‪« :‬فن معاصر من السعودية» في غاليري بروناي بمعهد‬

‫الدراسات الشرقية والشمال أفريقيا «سواس» في لندن‪ .‬وتزامن العرض‬ ‫مع إصدار كتاب وموقع انترنت مرافقين‪ ،‬وهما أول دليلين شاملين للفن‬

‫المعاصر في السعودية‪ .‬وعرض أحمد أول زخارفه في «لوح بمصراعين»‬ ‫واآلخر «طالسم» وجرى نقاش واسع حول أعماله في وسائل اإلعالم البريطانية‬

‫والعربية‪ .‬واستخدم لوحة «استنارات ‪ »١‬للترويج لمشروع «حافة الجزيرة‬

‫العربية» ضمن حملة جرت في محطات المترو اللندنية وفي المدينة بشكل‬ ‫عام‪ ،‬وألقى محاضرة حول عمله في جامعة لندن جنبا إلى جنب مع فنيشيا بورتر‬

‫والدكتور جيفري كينغ وبيتر ساندرز‪ .‬وعرض أحمد «تطور اإلنسان» للمرة‬

‫األولى في بينالي القاهرة الحادي عشر‪ .‬وبعد عودته إلى السعودية استمر‬ ‫في العمل طبيبا وتزوج من زميلته الفنانة هي أروى يحيى النعيمي‪ .‬وانتقل‬ ‫من بيت اسرته وترك قرية المفتاحة للفنون‪ ،‬وللمرة األولى أصبح ألحمد بيت‬

‫واستديو خاصان به‪.‬‬

‫الفن السعودي في أكاديمية برلين للفنون‪ ،‬وعلى غالف عدة صحف ظهرت‬

‫‪ .‬وفي شهر أكتوبر المقبل سيقدم أول عرض منفرد له في «غاليري فاينيل‬ ‫فاكتوري» بمنطقة سوهو وسط لندن ويصدر هذا الكتاب‪.‬‬

‫العسكري والواقعة في شمال غرب السعودية على حدود األردن‪ .‬وهو االبن‬ ‫عسيري‪ ،‬رسامة البيوت التقليدية العسيرية والخطاطة‪ .‬بعد ذلك جاء ألحمد‬ ‫أخوان هما بندر ومحمد وأربع اخوات هن عائشة وجواهر وجميلة وريم‪ .‬وهي‬ ‫السنة التي أصبح فيها صدام حسين رئيسا لجمهورية العراق في حين تم نقل‬

‫والد أحمد إلى قاعدة عسكرية كبيرة تقع على أقرب منطقة حدودية من‬

‫إسرائيل‪.‬‬

‫االبتدائية‪ .‬وقال عن ذلك في وقت الحق «ال أملك صورا لي كطفل وال صوراً‬

‫لعسير‪ ،‬وهناك أكمل أحمد دراسته الثانوية‪ ،‬وكان هذا االنتقال من القرية‬

‫التقليدية خالل طفولته‪.‬‬

BIOGRAPHIES of contributors Stephen Stapleton is an artist, teacher and social entrepreneur.

After encountering the artistic community in Abha during a journey across the Middle East in 2003, he founded the Offscreen Education Programme and Edge of Arabia as platforms for cultural dialogue between the Islamic and western worlds. He has a degree in art and philosophy from the University of Brighton, a PGCE in art education from the University of London and has exhibited his own work in Tehran, Amman, London, Oslo and New York. He has published several books related to the Middle East and won several awards for his work in the field of intercultural education.

Dr Venetia Porter is a curator of Islamic, modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art at the British Museum in London. She studied Arabic and Islamic art at Oxford University and obtained her PhD on the medieval history and architecture of the Yemen (where she has also lived) from the University of Durham. Her exhibitions include: Mightier than the Sword: Arabic Script, Beauty and Meaning, Melbourne (2003); Islamic Arts, Museum Kuala Lumpur (2004); Word into Art: Artists of the Modern Middle East, London (2006) and Dubai (2008); and The Hajj: Journey to the Heart of Islam (scheduled to open in January 2012 at the British Museum).

Dr Linda Komaroff is curator of Islamic art and head of the Middle East Art department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

Her exhibitions at LACMA include Letters in Gold: Ottoman Calligraphy from the Sakıp Sabancı Collection, Istanbul (1999); The Legacy of Genghis Khan: Courtly Art and Culture in Western Asia, 1256-1353 (2003); A Tale of Two Persian Carpets (2009); and Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts (scheduled to open in June 2011).

Ashraf Fayadh is a Palestinian poet and artist currently living in Abha, Saudi Arabia. His collection of poems, Instructions Within, was published in 2007 by Al-Farabi Publishing House in Beirut, and was listed by the Al-Hayat newspaper in London as one of 2008’s bestselling books across the Middle East. He has also written several essays on modern and contemporary art in the Middle East.

Ahmed Al-Omran is a leading Saudi commentator. His blog, saudijeans.org, is one of the most well-known and longest-running in the Middle East.

He has written for major international and regional publications such as the New York Times and Arab News. He has also spoken at several conferences focusing on media and freedom of speech. Ahmed received a Bachelors degree in Medicine and Surgery from King Saud University, Riyadh. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Journalism at Columbia University, New York.

Aarnout Helb is the founder and director of the world’s first museum dedicated solely to contemporary art from Saudi Arabia, the Greenbox Museum in Amsterdam. The museum is the size of a cabinet of curiosities and has similarly modest aims to encourage discussion, learning and enjoyment. The museum only collects and exhibits work by artists living and working in Saudi Arabia.

Tim Mackintosh-Smith is an award-winning writer and Arabist based in the Yemen capital of Sana’a for the past 26 years. His first book, Yemen: Travels in Dictionary Land, won the 1998 Thomas Cook/Daily Telegraph Travel Book Award and is now regarded as a classic of Arabian description. His two books on the adventures of the pilgrim and traveller Ibn Battutah, Travels with a Tangerine and The Hall of a Thousand Columns, are to be joined in 2010 by a third, Landfalls: On the Edge of Islam with Ibn Battutah. Tim’s journeys in search of Ibn Battutah have also been turned into a major BBC television series.

GLOSSARY of Arabic terms Allah is the divine word for God. The name has no plural form, which reflects the absolute oneness and incomparability of God within Islam.

Ayah or Aya means ‘miracle’ or ‘sign’. It refers to the verses within each Surah, which are divided into Ayahs.

Dervishes, also called whirling dervishes in English, are followers of Sufism, and traditionally devote themselves to a life of humility and religious enlightenment. They practice a fast, rotating dance to reach a state of religious ecstasy.

Hagar is the name of the Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) second wife.

Her story is alluded to in the Qur’an, but her name is not mentioned.

She was the mother of Ibrahim’s son Ishmael, who is regarded as the patriarch of the Ishmaelites (Arabs).

Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to the Holy City Makkah, and is one of the five pillars of Islam. It consists of a number of rituals in and around Makkah, and is compulsory at least once in a lifetime for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it. The ritual replicates the journeys and actions taken by the pre-Islamic Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), as well as Hagar and Ishmael.

Haraam means ‘forbidden’. In Islam it is used to refer to anything that is prohibited or considered sinful.

Imam has numerous definitions and can be: a religious leader, often head of a mosque and its community; one who leads prayers in a mosque; and in Shi’ism, the term also refers to the descendents of The Prophet Mohammed.

Islam is a monotheistic religion that is articulated by the Qur’an and which means ‘submission to God’. Islam is the third Abrahamic religion following Judaism and Christianity.

Ka’bah is the name for the cubic house at the centre of Makkah, which was built pre-Islam. It is the holiest site in Islam, believed to have been erected by the first Prophet Adam, and there is now a mosque built around it.

Hajj rituals are carried out around the Ka’bah, and it is the site towards which Muslims around the world direct their prayers five times a day.

Makkah, anglicised as Mecca, is the holy pilgrimage city in Saudi Arabia housing the Ka’bah.

Mamluk is the name for the political and military rulers of Egypt and parts of The Levant, Iraq and India from 1250 to 1517. The Mamluks famously conquered the Mongols and fought in the crusades. The art they produced was highly distinctive and holds a significant place in Islamic history.

Mashq is a technique used in Islamic art whereby a cluster of letters is pressed into the back of a sheet of paper in order to create a subtle relief effect.

Mihrab is a niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the direction of the Ka’bah at Makkah, towards which Muslims face while praying.

Minbar is a pulpit in a mosque where the Imam stands to deliver sermons.

Majdhub is a spiritual person who is overwhelmed by divine influence and may act strangely as a result. They are often considered ‘not all there’.

Traditional societies maintain both respect and distance from them.

Majlis means ‘place of sitting’ and is used to describe a room where various gatherings take place; social, administrative or religious.

Muhaqqaq is the name given to a type of Arabic calligraphy that was developed in the early 11th century and most commonly used in religious texts. It was abandoned after the 16th century and only a few original examples remain today.

Muslim is a term used to describe an adherent of Islam.

Qur’an is the Holy Book of Islam. It is believed by Muslims to be a guide for humankind revealed from Allah through the Angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad.

Shi’ism (Shi’a Islam) is found predominantly in Iran and Iraq and is the second largest branch of Islam. Shi’ites regard Imam Ali, cousin of The Prophet Mohammed, and his descendants as the legitimate successors to The Prophet. They reject the first three caliphs, or, leaders, of Islam.

Sufism (Sufi Islam) is one of the three main forms of Islam along with Sunnism and Shi’ism. Sufis are focused on the mystical dimensions of Islam.

Sunnism (Sunni Islam) is the largest branch of Islam. With Sunnis spread throughout the world, it consists of four main schools of thought: Hanafi, Maliki Madhab, Shafi’i and Hanbali.

Surah is the word for the sections of The Holy Qur’an, which can be compared in form to a passage or book in the Bible. The Qur’an is divided into 114 Surahs varying in length, and the name of each relates to a significant topic or issue broached within that Surah.

Surah Al-Baqarah, or, Surah of the Cow, is the longest Surah in the Holy Qur’an. It deals with a number of topics and parables including the creation of Man and stories from the Old Testament and Bible. It also includes the story in which God tells Moses to instruct the Israelites to sacrifice a cow, which they are reluctant to do.

Tawaf is the Islamic ritual of circumambulation of the Ka’bah, seven times in a counter-clockwise direction. It is most commonly practiced during Hajj and Umrah and existed as a ritual pre-Islam.

Umrah means ‘to visit a populated place’. While Hajj is the major pilgrimage, Umrah is referred to as the minor pilgrimage, during which a similar set of rituals are performed. Umrah is not compulsory but it is recommended.

Wahhabism refers to a highly conservative interpretation of Sunni Islam found in Saudi Arabia. It follows the teachings of the 18th century religious leader Muhammad Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab, who led the puritanical reform movement in Arabia. It is not considered an official branch of Islam.

Waqf is a term within Islamic Jurisprudence referring to a trust fund or donation for charitable needs. Waqf is comparable to an endowment or fund in the Islamic system.
