DEAR ATHLETES, FAMILIES, AND FANS, Welcome to Montana’s capital city and home of this year’s Special Olympics Montana State Basketball Tournament! Ten different venues throughout Helena and Montana City play host to this year’s competition, which promises to be fierce—just like the athletes themselves.

It has been our pleasure to oversee the coordination of this year’s tournament, with exciting activities planned throughout our three-day event. Whether it’s at the Opening Ceremony, the Dance Carnival, or one of the competitions (or all the above!) we look forward to joining with you to cheer on participants from across the state who will be here to demonstrate their roundball prowess.

Of course, this tournament would not be possible without the help of the amazing volunteers who have served as this year’s Games Management Team. Please join us in giving a “shout out” of appreciation to our fantastic individuals.

Athlete Emcee KYLE NORMAN HELENA HALOS

Your emcee for the 2023 State Basketball Opening Ceremony is Kyle Norman! Kyle, who is on the Helena Halos, is 22 years old and has been involved in Special Olympics for 13 years.

While he participates in bowling, track and field, swimming, bocce, and soccer—basketball is, by far, his favorite sport.

And he’s excited for the State Basketball Tournament to return to his backyard.“I’m really looking forward to having basketball back in town which will be really amazing.”

Kyle reflects on one of his best memories of Special Olympics.

“It may be the last time the tournament was in Helena, and I had the chance to see Lieutenant Governor Mike Cooney.”

When it comes to the importance of Special Olympics in his life, Kyle says, “Special Olympics has opened many doors. I’ve felt more included with Special Olympics and more confident!”

Kyle is honored to be named the 2023 Athlete Emcee and has the following to share with Special Olympics athletes and teams: “Good luck, have fun, and enjoy the tournament!”

LETR SPOTLIGHT Mark Hernandez, West Director Montana Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR)

Given Deputy Sheriff Mark Hernandez’s commitment to Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), you might be surprised to learn his first experience was being “volun-told” right out of the Academy. While he was familiar with Special Olympics, LETR was something Hernandez was not familiar with. “I did it, came back, and had such positive things to say about it that they made me Leg Leader.”

Nineteen years later, he says the relationships are what keep him coming back. “The relationships that I’ve built over the years with other law enforcement, agencies, Special Olympics, and the athletes are a big selling point for me. In this line of work, we don’t get to do a lot of fun, positive stuff and being able to do one really positive thing has helped me throughout my career.”

A highlight for Hernandez was the summer of 2022 when he was selected as a participant in the Final Leg for the USA Games in Orlando, Florida.

“The attendance at USA Games was awesome. The stadium was packed with professional athletes, singers—it was a party. Getting to walk with Montana out of the tunnel for the Opening Ceremony at USA Games was definitely the highlight of my Torch Run career.”

Hernandez was named as the assistant director for the west last spring and looks forward to being in a different role. “Now being part of the executive council is going to open me up to a larger experience, a lot more people, and more responsibility. It’ll be great to see a different side.”

Hernandez encourages all law enforcement officers to check out LETR.
