We have a nice cross section of homes in a variety of price ranges to give every visitor a chance to dream about that wonderful goal of home ownership. This year’s Parade features 16 homes representing 11 builders. We hope that you find this year’s Parade entertaining, informative and inspiring. I wanted to take this opportunity to shed light on the local economic impact of home building in the Helena area. Did you know home building generates substantial local economic activity, including new income and jobs for residents, and additional revenue for local governments? In October last year, the HBIA contracted with an economist from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) to do a comprehensive study to estimate these economic benefits. We wanted to capture the effect of the construction activity itself, the ripple impact that occurs when income earned from construction activity is spent and recycles in the local economy, and the ongoing impact that results from new homes becoming occupied by residents who pay taxes and buy local produced goods and services. In order to fully appreciate the positive impact residential construction has on a community, it is important to include the ripple effects and the ongoing benefits. The model used by NAHB has been used for many years in over 600 local jurisdictions, metropolitan areas, non-metro areas, and states across the nation. The results were astonishing! In single family construction, the estimated one-year local impact of building 400 single family homes in Lewis and Clark County is:
These are ongoing, annual local impacts that result from the new homes being occupied and the occupants paying taxes and otherwise participating in the local economy year after year. NAHB just completed a survey and, despite the ups and downs of the housing market, home owners and non-owners alike consider owning a home essential to the American dream. The survey results show that Americans see beyond the immediate housing market to the enduring value of homeownership. An overwhelming 75 percent of the people who were polled said that owning a home is worth the risk of the fluctuations in the market, and 95 percent of the home owners said they are happy with their decision to own a home. Even though the market is weak, people who don’t own say they want to buy a house. Almost three-quarters of those who do not currently own a home, 73 percent, said owning a home is one of their goals. And among younger voters who are most likely to be in the market for a home in the next few years, the percentages are even higher. Among the other survey results:

Come to the Lowe’s parking lot on Saturday, September 17, and leave the driving to us. Buses are free to the public. Buses will depart intermittently on Saturday and will stop at each home along the Parade route. Parade participants will be able to tour a home for approximately 20 minutes before the bus leaves. There will be two buses touring the Parade route. Grab a friend, and hop on a bus! Enjoy the Parade of Homes, and leave the driving to the HBIA.
