very week, talk show host Jimmy Fallon does a regular segment on his “Late Night” program in which he scribbles brief thank you notes to random things and people. When I first saw the sequence, it was Christmas time and I assumed the host was showing his gratitude in the spirit of the holidays. Over time, I realized the show’s writers were just having sarcastic fun, regularly…for example, “Thank you, tanning beds, for looking like human Panini makers.” Jimmy’s crew has inspired me to offer some Thank You notes of my own:

fter watching the movie I AM, I was having a rather animated discussion with God about why such movies don’t talk more about intuition. Movies like What The Bleep Do We Know?!, The Celestine Prophecy, The Living Matrix and I AM all touch on intuition, but they don’t spend much time on its importance.

When I was done ranting, the words came into my head to start a movement that will help people understand what the “voice within” is and how to live by it.

My most favorite subject among all my books is intuition. That still, small, silent voice within all of us is there to guide us continually.

It’s mysterious, magical, loving and awesome when we realize that this silent voice within us is there just for us, and its sole purpose is to make our lives easier by continually giving us guidance when we need it. We

don’t have to feel alone or feel like no one understands us, because our intuition does understand us unconditionally and always wants to be of help.

Recently on the TV show “Rizzoli and Isles,” the cop (Rizzoli) asked the coroner (Isles) what her gut told her about the case. The coroner (who doesn’t get the whole gut concept) said, “I don’t know what my intestines say about it.” I thought that was pretty humorous — and realistic — because a lot of people don’t know what “within” means! The inner voice actually resides within the core of our soul and it has been guiding our soul through every incarnation.

Webster defines intuition as the immediate knowing of something without the conscious use of reasoning. It’s located somewhere between our heart and our solar plexus. It’s an inner nudge. A knowing. A sense or feeling. Not an emotional feeling but a knowing feeling.

he critically acclaimed and Academy Awardnominated film Food Inc. – filmmaker Robert Kenner’s exposé of corporate farming in America – also is one of the top-grossing theatrical documentaries of all time. In the three years since its release, Food Inc. remains part of the conversation as America wrestles with obesity, diabetes and other health conditions that are linked to the poor quality of food consumed by Americans and produced by only a handful of multinational corporations.

Kenner will speak on Food Inc. at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in Romano Gym at the University of MinnesotaDuluth, brought to campus by Access For All. A question-and-answer session will follow the lecture. It is free to the public and will be interpreted in ASL. Kenner remains devoted to public education. He’s creating a campaign of short videos called “Fixed Food” to help drive a consumer-led change toward more natural and organic food that is sustainable and in balance with the environment.

Kenner’s videos are expected to launch in November, but in the meantime he said the food industry — through the Alliance to Feed the Future, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association — is preparing to launch multi-million-dollar campaigns of its own to convince Americans that the food it creates is healthy.

“On one hand the consumers are ready to make these great changes,” Kenner said, “and on the other hand, some of industry wants to change — and some of it wants to go on the offensive and talk about why they are serving the healthiest food, why this

processed food is the healthiest and best food we can get.”

What was your intention in making Food Inc. and did that intention change by the time the film was completed?

Robert Kenner: My original intention

was to have a conversation about how to feed the world and is our food sustainable, our food system, and by the end I realized that so much of the industrial food world was not ready to talk to me. It was very hard to have that kind of a conversation.

So much of our present day food system is off limits to the consumer.

They don’t want us peeking behind the curtain to see how this food is made – “they” being the industrial system. It really does not want to engage in a conversation about how this food is made.

You’ve said in an interview that you weren’t wanting to preach to the converted, but to enlighten people who were not aware of what is going on.

RK: I am hoping really to expand the

circle to let people know. I guess I started to make this film because I was curious to know where our food came from, how it’s grown, what’s on our plate and what it does to us. I had no idea how difficult it would be to

more and more concerned and people are becoming more and more aware that this system presents dangers. I also think the industrial food makers are about to engage in a campaign — spending close to $100 million, different groups are spending $30-40 million dollars — to tell the public that this processed food is good for you, that we should be eating more meat, all the things that we might have questioned. But ultimately, people are becoming more aware and more conscious that we have to put better things in our stomach and this system is making us sick.

Today, we have companies that are plying us with massive amounts of sugars and salts. Now we have to come out with new diabetes drugs. So they are on the one hand making us sick and on the other hand providing us our cure.

How did the making of Food Inc. make you feel personally? Did it change your life?

RK: Well, it makes me much more

conscious, both about what I’m putting in my stomach, as well as to the role of corporations in our society. Some are trying to change things, but there are many others that are willing to sell you food that is making you sick — and they are ready to put pressure on the government not to be regulated in any form or fashion, even though they are getting massive amounts of subsidies from the government.

What has been the result of the film overall? Has it made a difference?

RK: I think it’s made a huge differ-

ence. I have been very pleasantly surprised what kind of reception it has had. We were one of the most successful selling DVDs of the year. And more people saw it on the internet than they did on DVD and/ or in theaters.

It became part of a conversation,

which was very exciting. I think it fed into what is a growing movement out there. People are concerned.

Organic is the fastest growing segment of the food business. Ultimately this movement is being led by moms, who might not have thought about where their food comes from, or dads, or parents buying food for their children, and parents want their children to eat healthy food. It’s not democrats or republicans, it’s parents.

People felt their lives were changed on some levels.

This is a growing movement, and Food Inc. was one of the many things that played into this movement, along with Eric Schlosser’s book Fast Food Nation, Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma, films like King Corn and all that’s out there. It’s really helping to change. People are being affected by it.

Your Abundance Mindset: Cultivating a Richer Life

For those who have not seen Food Inc., what positives can people take from the film?

RK: First of all, I know a lot of people were scared to

watch the film thinking it would be filled with upsetting images. We really tried to go out of our way to make a film that you didn’t have to keep your eyes shut to watch, but could open your mind instead. We tried to add as much humor as possible.

I think the ultimate positive, if you look at this in a historical context, is that things change. Tobacco is a great example. People lied about what the effect of cigarettes on our health was. They stood up and said things that were absolute lies — lies that they were fully aware of — and testified in front of Congress. But as people started to understand what those lies were and people understood how unhealthy those cigarettes were for us and how much they were costing us as a society, we eventually put taxes on those cigarettes and were able to change patterns in this country and save lots of money and lives.

Industry will fight any form of regulation and they don’t want to pay for the externalities that they are creating. But at the same time when we start to understand what those externalities are, I think we will, as consumers, want to start to become healthier and change our own habits.

I think I am much more optimistic about consumerdriven change than I am governmental change. Anything can happen in government, but I do think we consumers can drive true change. Look at how people complained to Wal-Mart about the growth hormone in the milk.

Wal-Mart changed its policy. That was a surprise for me, too, by the way. I had no idea that Wal-Mart would end up being a good guy in our film. a

An interview with Cyndi Dale and Carole J. Hyder

In response to that, two Twin Cities businesswomen — Cyndi Dale, president of Essential Energy, a successful corporation that offers intuitive-based consulting and healing, and corporate consulting, and Carole J. Hyder, an internationally known Feng Shui consultant and speaker — will present a program to help others cultivate a richer life.

The two presenters, both best-selling authors and world-renowned teachers, will help participants uncover the blocks that keep them from accepting both worldly and spiritual blessings and help them construct a new “money blueprint,” an energetic and practical plan for creating financial flow.

The Edge asked Cyndi Dale and Carole J. Hyder to share their personal experiences and offer more insight on abundance.

How does one know if he or she is in an Abundance Mindset or not?

Carole J. Hyder: I know when someone

has an Abundance Mindset by looking at the space in which they live and work. Coming from a Feng Shui perspective, I know if a person regards their possessions with respect and delight. Obviously, this has nothing to do with how much money an item costs nor does it have to do with how many items someone owns. It has to do with appreciation of their surroundings. Some of the richest people I know live in modest homes with few possessions; some of the poorest people I’ve worked with live in mansions.

Cyndi Dale: There are two main ways to know if you have adopted an

Carole: I have seen four blocks that

Quality wins over quantity every time.

Abundance is about what nourishes us. Do you have a comfortable home, one that supports your lifestyle? Are your friendships nourishing, loving, and dependable? These are the types of questions we should reflect upon.

The second criterion is internal. The Abundance Mindset begins and ends with integrity, our ability to match our values with our deeds and our hearts with our activities. We cannot be abundant if we do not know who we really are. What makes us tick, what creates internal peace, and what propels us toward joy?

What is the number one thing all of us can do today to have an Abundance Mindset?

Cyndi: Begin by appreciating who you

are. This is even more important than being grateful for what you have, because externals come and go. Today we might be joyously situated in our dream house and tomorrow it’s all swept away by a tornado.

To appreciate our real self, the being we know ourselves to be, we can meet every situation and person with calm and openness. Even the most challenging of circumstances can be transformed into opportunities for connection and growth.

Carole: Wealth comes directly from gratitude, not the other way around.

In my Feng Shui world, if someone is grateful for their circumstances, whatever they may be, it will be reflected in how they live and move through their space. I will see whether gratitude is

keep people from embracing their abundance: fear, guilt, being a pleaser and being irresponsible. I call these the Four Faces of Money, which we will be talking about in The Abundance Mindset workshop. These challenges are usually learned — from what the family said about money, how they treated money, or from a specific experience that caused someone to look negatively on being abundant.

Cyndi: The most potent blocks are held in our soul, which carries in misperceptions and fears from other lifetimes, and our family, which creates negative mindsets that affect us energetically, or practically and spiritually. We don’t want to limit our abundance. It’s just that at some point we adopted limiting beliefs in order to adapt to our external circumstances. The good news is that we can always exchange a dysfunctional set of beliefs for functional ones.

What do you do personally to stay in the flow of abundance?

Cyndi: Every day I wake up in grateful-

ness. I ask the Divine to bless and run my day (alone, I don’t always do such a great job.) I also continually work on my limiting beliefs. For instance, I currently work with a Sufi therapist who helps me excavate my negative thought processes and open to divine flow.

Carole: Gratitude goes a long ways to making me feel like I may be one of the richest people on the planet.

Besides starting the day with a heart full of appreciation, one of my rituals is to make the bed each morning. I love the act of straightening out the sheets, plumping the pillows, bringing order to the room. It has become a mini-meditation and I feel out-of-sorts when I didn’t get around to doing it. I particularly love the experience when I walk in the bedroom at the end of the

day. I’m reminded about being grateful all over again.

Please explain the Enrichment™ process from your perspective.

Carole: The Enrichment process is all about how to discover

the blocks that may be preventing someone from opening up to their abundance, how to heal those blocks, and how to set up a specific action plan to move forward with a new system in place. Having money isn’t about being lucky, but instead it’s about strategizing, planning and preparing for a wealthy life. Getting their space in order to facilitate that wealth is a big part of the Enrichment process.

Cyndi: This process is about how to have a life that rocks!

We all want to wake up excited, eager to dance with life.

We want to lie down to sleep feeling satisfied with what’s occurred and who we’ve been. To help participants get there, we discuss the elements that prevent the prosperous life and provide healing support to clear these issues and blocks. We then guide participants in accessing the spiritual powers available internally and externally to supercharge their manifestation abilities.

What is a “Money Blueprint” and what does it do for us?

Cyndi: A money blueprint is a template that enables

participants to transform negatives into positives and insert their spiritual purpose center in their lives. The key idea is that we are promised all the support we need to fulfill our spiritual destiny. This includes money, love, and guidance. If we make decisions from our purpose, we’ll naturally attract nourishment and abundance. The remainder of the plan includes action steps that will fulfill our destiny.

Carole: Participants will go home with their own specific blueprint for opening up to a new abundance mindset.

This will be a literal blueprint with reminders, actions steps, and their money purpose clearly delineated so they can begin their Enrichment process to creating a richer life. Similar to a treasure map, the money blueprint can be hung or positioned prominently to remind them every day of their abundance steps.

Love is not Approval

our deepest need is to feel loved, no matter what.

No conditions. Yet, too often you hear an inside voice that says, “In order to be loved, I must do things right!” You acquired this voice from the many negative messages you heard in childhood about what you did wrong. You came to conclude that you were not good enough or worthy to be loved unless you did things “right.” Thus, “love” got confused with… approval!

If you feel like you need outside authorization to feel important or valuable, it is not love you are seeking, but approval. You may seek this approval, but even if you get it, you are never satisfied because, deep down, you desire to be okay without it.

When love becomes approval, you try desperately to do everything “right.” Since you cannot possibly meet “right” in everyone’s definition, you feel stressed, angry and anxious and can grow insecure, defensive and controlling.

Humanity is plagued by the belief that we need to be a certain way or do something “right” in order to be okay and worthwhile. Feelings of inadequacy take refuge deep within all of us, causing most of our stress and struggle.

The following are examples of beliefs that keep you dependent on approval. They are based in fear and live deep in your ego mind:  If I don’t do it right, I am not okay.  If I do not please others, they will not be okay.  If others don’t like or approve of me, I must be doing something wrong.

If you turn to your heart and ask for Love’s opinion on the above, you might hear something different. Love is a divine voice that is on your side and wants you to be at peace and in joy.

Love would say:  If I don’t do it right, I am totally okay and remember that “right” is in the eye of the beholder.  If I do not please others, I trust they will be okay.  If others don’t approve of me, I know it’s not about

me, but their own needs and desires.

Next time you yearn for a sense of importance based on how you look or what you accomplish, go inside and feel Love instead. Tune into what would make you feel good. Let the Love inside you dissolve the need for any approval so you can follow your heart. Remember, there is no right way!

Let’s say you seek your mother’s sanction before taking significant action in your life. You may actually ask her in person or be unconsciously influenced by what she thinks is right for you. You are tied to what she thinks is best and never seek what you truly want for yourself. Maybe she wants you to be a mother and you want to pursue only a career. If you are dependent on her approval, you might become a mother against your heart’s desire. Is this Love, or the small part of you (ego) that still believes the only way to be “okay” is to do it the “right way?” (And your mother’s small self that needs you to agree with her so she will be affirmed as “okay.”)

When you listen to and feel the presence of Love, you reclaim your inner power and follow what makes your heart sing. You begin to love yourself and choose your own path while respecting your loved one’s best intentions for you. You finally realize that deep down, in their hearts, people love you just because you’re you! (Not because you are doing things a certain way.)

Remember, your deepest desire is to be loved “as is.”

Not to be judged, but acknowledged. Not to be wronged, but feel understood and accepted, no matter what. Only Love has the power to accept you exactly as you are in any moment and acknowledge your behavior without judgment. How you behave is how you behave. What you choose is what you choose. Ignorance and ethnic prejudice in the 1940s discouraged these practices. After the premature death of her father from a side reaction to medication, Dr. Chow commenced a 10-year search and study of TCM and Qigong in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada and the U.S., witnessing many “miracles.” Taking the best of both systems, she founded the East West Academy of Healing Arts in 1974. Today Dr. Chow teaches TCM and Qigong internationally and maintains a clinical practice (attracting patients worldwide), specializing in critical cases, including stress, stroke; cancer, and respiratory, emotional and neuro-muscular conditions “where all else has failed,” using her original Chow Integrated Healing System/Chow Medical Qigong.

Experiencing the future of healing in the scalar room

bout fifteen years ago a close friend invited me on a trip to southern Iowa to sit in a room of eight computers for a healing.

Naturally, I thought the idea was ridiculous, for who would want to sit in a room full of computers? I thought, “How healthy is that?” Surely the electricity flow couldn’t be healthy for one’s body.

The “I know what I know” syndrome kicks in. Little did I realize that I would own my own computer rejuvenation business and just love to sit in the room, experiencing scalar energy. When I come to Minneapolis, I can hardly wait to sit in the scalar room. It draws me in and feels like home.

I recently turned 50 and most of my friends can’t believe it. They think I’m fortysomething. Surprise!

When I come out of the scalar room, people comment that my skin glows. I have felt many things in scalar energy. A deep love, peace, relaxation, connection to a higher self, tingling sensations throughout the body that continue for quite a while. I actually feel the waves moving through and around me. You can’t force waves.

You just let everything go and let them rejuvenate your cells.

My friends from Iowa say that each time they come out of a scalar room it’s different. They feel something changes inside emotionally, mentally or physically. They experience a deep connection to their spirituality, God or the universe. The receptionist had a severe case of plantar fasciitis and hated to walk. She tried a session and the next morning she had no pain in the affected heel.

We ask everyone who enters the chamber to sit back, close your eyes, clear your mind and set an intention asking God or the universe to heal whatever you feel is going on in your body. Go as deep as you can; sleeping is acceptable. The level of peace, tranquility and love that comes through during a session is the main factor that correlates with these healings. If you can go into a state of deep relaxation for a long period of time, there is nothing that the body can’t heal. The chamber increases brain waves related to meditation, relaxation, peace and love.

The secret of the universe is just sitting down to listen.

When we take time to listen, the energy will come.

The more energy we have, the healthier our bodies are.

The less energy we have, the more lifeless we become and we are more asleep to our lives and miss the God details of our life.

Scalar waves are like using a cell phone. We plug our cell phones in to get recharged. Similarly, we can plug our bodies into scalar waves to rejuvenate cells in our body.

The optimum amount of time for a session is two hours. This is because it takes a while for the mind to settle down, relax and allow the spirit to listen. This process takes up to an hour. The second hour is pure healing. win-win: stepping into our potential

espite the prophecies of Mayan calendar theorists who predict the world will end this month, the rumors of our collective demise appear rather exaggerated. In fact, cultivating win-win relationships gives us plenty of opportunity to step into our potential.

Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Your energy, which has been held in check for the last little while, explodes outward. Having gotten to the bottom of a draining emotional issue, you shine forth now with a sustained burst of creativity that lasts all month. Take responsibility for what’s happening in a key relationship – be willing to hang in and fight for a win-win outcome.

Apple crisp: a perfect recipe for autumn

The Dreamer’s Time

I

n the autumn weather, I find this recipe delightful served in a bowl with some unsweetened almond milk poured in the bottom. Be aware that some people with a gluten sensitivity can tolerate gluten-free oats (Bob’s Red Mill brand) while others can’t.

Ingredients Filling 12 apples (peeled, unpeeled or both), cored and sliced 1/4 cup maple syrup 2 tsp cinnamon 1/3 cup dried currants 1 TBS brown rice flour Topping 2 cups rolled oats 1 cup brown rice flour 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1 TBS cinnamon 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup canola oil Directions 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. To prepare filling, place apples in large bowl. Fold in syrup, cinnamon and currants. Sprinkle on flour and gently fold until combined. Spread mixture into 9 x 12-inch baking casserole.

3. To make topping, use the same mixing bowl and combine oats, flour, nuts and cinnamon. In separate bowl, whisk together syrup and oil, add to dry ingredients and mix until crumbly. Spread topping evenly over apples, cover with foil and bake 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes or until apples are cooked through. Remove from oven and serve. n Australian Aboriginal sits quietly beside the sacred rock that has been revered by his tribe for an unspeakable length of time. His eyes close and he chants. An observer would believe he has entered another reality, but to the Aboriginal there is only one reality – the Dreamtime.

In Aboriginal Dreamtime, there is a Dream in which everyone and everything is being Dreamed, and there is the Dreamer. The connection between the Dream and the Dreamer is the process of Dreaming. We all have the power of the Dream within us; it is our likeness to the Dreamer. Through this power to Dream, we can either Dream our way back to the Dreamer, or we can Dream ourselves away from the Dreamer.

How, you might ask, do we do this?

The simplest explanation of this process expresses Dreaming as the use of our faculties of imagination and visualization. The images we develop and project either take us forward to realize our essential Divinity, or pull us away. The key point is that we choose our direction.

For the Aboriginal, there is no issue of choice because there is no attachment to any physical form or material possession. He/She lives in a constant state of spiritual awareness.

From this perspective, let us look at the conflicts we experience in our lives today. All conflicts, regardless of context, have their origin in the comparison of spiritual beliefs. All questioning has an essentially spiritual core, and the very act launches each individual’s “quest.”

Today, our questions reflect a deep insecurity about who and what we are. They call upon us to become as the Aboriginal – to enter into a constant state of spiritual awareness.

But how does one find the proper path?

We find our way home to the source, our Divine spark, through knowledge of the key to the hidden processes of the

Kosmos. This knowledge is found in the encrypted tenets of ancient traditions, although distorted by contemporary translations. Be it Eastern or Western (which are ultimately one), tradition is that great body of knowledge that is somewhat akin to an abstract formula for living life to its fullest.

The path we seek is to acquire knowledge through inquiry. Knowledge sets us free from the wheel of “Samsara,” or the cycle of death and rebirth. It clarifies karma, the principle of the reincarnation and the various vehicles of our being through which consciousness (Divinity) expresses itself. So what is this knowledge we seek? We seek to understand the truth of one and all traditions. We seek to understand how this knowledge explains the limiting reality of modern science, with the great god “Random,” and empowers us to reach beyond to the Kosmos clearly illustrated in the works of Plato, Pythagoras, and Einstein.

Ultimately, we seek to find our place within the Kosmos and understand the Implicate Order that governs all creation.

The Kosmos, far greater than the physical universe of science and the Heaven and Hell of Christianity, is the body of God. It represents a fourfold process in which the presence of God is felt throughout life at all levels of reality. The knowledge we seek helps us realize the parallel between the truth from the Upanishads – stating that “when a blade of grass is cut, the entire Universe quivers” — and the statement of truth from contemporary Chaos Theory that tells us that “when a butterfly flaps its wings in Beijing, it affects the weather in New York City.” This is the Implicate Order, previously hidden through our lack of understanding, but always present.

The Implicate Order is the way in which God acts throughout the Kosmos and through our lives. With this understanding and feeling of presence, we then Dream continued on page 22 

hat does being a spiritually conscious person really mean?

Spirituality can refer to an ultimate or an alleged immaterial reality, an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of his/her being or the deepest values and meanings by which people live.

Does being a spiritually conscious person mean we no longer have strong emotions one way or another, positive or negative? Or does it suggest that to be in higher consciousness we are no longer with emotions, regardless of what is playing out in our lives? There have been times on my own spiritual journey when I have felt confused about this point. To be truly spiritually evolved, must I be devoid of, or rise above, emotion?

At times when Life has shown up like a hurricane slamming into my front door, this idea of a separateness of spiritual consciousness and emotion has left me questioning. How can I navigate the intense emotions lurking around me while retaining a sense of spiritual balance and serenity?

When I try to understand life from the perspective of my higher Self (that everything is Divinely protected and in order), I don’t get thrown for such a loop when things appear out of control. But if I am honest with myself, sometimes life can really throw a sucker punch right to the solar plexus. It is at those times when practicing spiritual consciousness can prove challenging.

For example, if something that I perceive as frightening or dangerous or sad happens to one of my children or someone very close to me, am I to just keep walking through it without skipping a beat and expect myself to automatically trust that all will be well? Or is it part of the human journey to take a moment (or many moments) to feel the deep pain, sadness or even anger?

For me, allowing for a time of contemplation and digestion of being in my place of pain, sadness, fear or anger is part of the spiritual process.

As I continue to speak out for abuse victims whose voices are so often silent, I believe allowing myself to be in the moment fully experiencing

what is happening both externally and internally is a critical part of my spiritual journey.

Just being is something I am not always comfortable with. And I did not always grasp what simply being meant. I sometimes still struggle with the idea of being vs. doing. Early on in life I was given the message that if I was not doing something (i.e. physically moving, being busy, productive, etc.), then I was being lazy. And so I have spent much of my life doing.

But a personal triumph that has come with age and practice has been my ability to honor my inner voice — to actually be still enough to invite it in, and quiet enough to truly hear it. At those times, there is nothing I have to physically do or say. It is enough that I am present, and listening. Setting aside self-judgment (i.e., I should be working, cleaning, exercising, etc.), as well as realizing that to simply be is an accomplishment in itself, is key.

In this place of quiet contemplation, I can ask myself what it really means to be a spiritual person and then sit back and listen to my inner voice, my angels, and trust that the answers and direction that come to me will be Divinely inspired. I can trust that I will be guided to best use my abilities, energies and passion for children’s welfare. By allowing my very human emotions equal space, I can connect to my higher Self and make conscious choices for the greater good of the amazing children who are just waiting to have their voices heard.

I believe my compulsion to speak out on behalf of victims of child abuse is Spirit-driven, moving me back to my Divine purpose of wholeness. To me, being a spiritual person means that I fully experience the complete range of human emotions, while returning to a place of quiet contemplation for renewal. Waking to Unity

ome wake up easily while others need to be jarred out of sleep. New ways of thinking or paradigm shifts work in much the same way. Some take to them easily while others need a much more dramatic event to awaken them to a new idea.

The idea of Unity isn’t new or New Age. Since the beginning of recorded history, there have been people awake, aware and speaking this truth.

The messengers have come from all parts of the world, in every century — and while some have been revered, many have died at the hands of those who didn’t wish to “wake up.”

Whether it is presented as the concept of “we all have a spark of God in us” or just that we are all sharing this physical existence, there have always been those who have

tried to awaken others to our similarities what brings us together. For those of us still uncertain about this reality, our planet is giving us ample opportunity to open our awareness and wake up.

When a natural disaster such as an earthquake or tornado happens, our unity is brought into sharp focus. The playing field is leveled for everyone affected. It hits us all the same. We all feel loss, fear, sadness, and then eventually hope. We come together to help each other without thought to class, color or religion. We see people hurting and we help. It’s our natural instinct.

When it is nature, which is seemingly out of our control that has brought us tragedy, we waste very little time on anger and just get to helping each other. We can’t attack nature, or seek revenge on the wind.

Instead our hearts open and stay

 Dream continued from page 20 live a life in accord with our Divinity, realizing our Dharma (right life actions), effacing our karma and fulfilling our destinies. We live in a perpetual spiritual awareness, which we see as the experience of Aboriginal culture, for those who have not lived within the distortion of their tradition over time.

How we receive these benefits and acquire knowledge is vital. It requires us to work from “the bottom up” — through the vehicles of the physical body, the Soul, the Spirit, “up” to the Divine spark. This is the mystical pathway. It prepares all levels of our being to receive God in our lives consciously.

Equally important in our pursuit of knowledge is our work from “the top down.” This is the pathway of the Magus – “Magic.” Here we engage in the great work of Alchemy. This great work is unique to humanity, for humans alone can perform the task described in the doctrine “As above, so below.” We alone can unite the above with the below, working from the top down and the bottom up.

When we heed the call of tradition, “Man Know Thyself,” we begin the journey of self-inquiry. This yields to us the great truths given not by any one teacher from tradition, but by all. It calls upon us to actively train our faculties of imagination and visualization so that we may dispel fear, illusion and false doctrine, opening a window for the expression of the Implicate Order in our lives.

When we do this, we may then find that our lives become an example for others. We become what the Buddhists refer to as “he who leaves no tracks.”

Why is this so? Because we now know ourselves for who we truly are. We see ourselves in the image and likeness of

that way. They don’t harden against anyone. All our energy is used for helping. It truly brings out the best in everyone. It’s horrible to have a disaster strike and destroy lives and homes, but it is beautiful to open our hearts to one another and help regardless of who they are.

Perhaps we shouldn’t fear the changes on the planet that are coming about in the form of dramatic events.

We could look at them as an opportunity to practice unity, to love each other and care for each other under all circumstances. Perhaps Nature is waking us up to our true selves with a shake and a scare, but with a divine purpose: to open our hearts and learn Unity. a Rev. God. When in a constant state of spiritual awareness, we choose our thoughts, words, and deeds with great clarity.

This shapes our images and beliefs. These images and resultant beliefs then assist us to Dream our way back to the Dreamer. We ultimately become the Dreamer, and the sacred rock is the altar found within our hearts. The quest of every tradition and each individual is to unite the knowledge of all creation with the wisdom of the heart.

A Walk in the Woods

(1) - I n t r o d u c ti on

t is early October with the sun just above the eastern hills. Shadows from tall aspen, elm and oak lie diagonally across the trail (cut years ago by workers building a mill near the river).

I walk alone. A carved oak branch provides some guidance over small pockets of ice dotting the trail and meandering creeks.

My thoughts are lost into the tree canopy holding onto the changing leaves. The crunch of creatures running through the forest echoes.

Through the baring branches and extended limbs, the morning sky, infused with pink and purple, is cold and still. A preview of winter, perhaps, as the water pools into ice puddles and captures leaves of varying colors. Summer fern has turned brown, and wilted into itself. The forest’s underbrush is taking leave and revealing the floor that is rarely seen. Tufts of earth and downed limbs with hidden stashes of acorns fill the landscape between tree trunks, bushes, ferns, and buckthorn.

I feel alone here with my thoughts and my spirit, but I know that is not completely true. On the darkest of days, when the sun does not leave its nest, when the clouds strangle the last light, there is something else deep within the forest. The basic constructs that form the human spirit and soul are restless and waiting for a return to their roots.

Yes, there is some other presence or spirit here. The space moves. The branches and tall grass bend. Something, a shadow methodically moving carefully with no

sound, just the wind, is sad and unhappy.

The state of consciousness and the apparent shunning of what nature is, what it is we live within, weighs heavy upon this forest.

Too many seek out what we are already inside of and experiencing every day.

Music, nature. Nature and music. What part of the orchestra do we play? For even in the silence there is music, within the energy, there is something, some connection or thread. Each tree sings a sweet song that if you silence your mouth and your thoughts, will be heard and will take you in.

These thoughts arrive as I wander the dirt path dividing the forest. I stop. I breathe and I listen. The sap within some of the trees slows and begins to crystallize. Small branches snap from the wind and make their way to the ground. Scattered snowflakes are silent through the air and land upon moss and peat. I open my mouth, look toward the thinning sky with eyes closed and taste the nature that surrounds me, that allows me to be here, that welcomes me here.

And the snow turns to a light rain.

The forest awakens briefly and dusted flora emerges with their frozen colors and brown, decaying leaves fighting for moisture and one last breath.

Within the sleeping forest, absent of any outside noise and distraction, there is something else here: watching, or following.

The more I walk within the silence and curtain of nature, the more I realize within my thoughts the need for change. I know everything is here. Everything I desire and need, the things and substance that matter, can be found right here amongst the scattered gifts.

It’s barely October and ash leaves, still green, fall straight down, like parachutes above the battlefield that make quick vertical drops of ammunition.

They lay like emeralds on a thin dust of early snow, that coats the deck white, drapes the open umbrella, blankets the garden chairs.

We think we know when things are supposed to happen, bemoan the unseasonable frost, presume spring is late, proclaim the baby came too early.

The ash leaves line the patio lounge chairs like bodies of young soldiers fallen early, caught without winter boots, lying there dressed in khaki not even thinking of winter like sandals, still strewn on the entryway floor, and closets still full of empty summer jackets. ~ June Blumenson

 Woods continued from page 23 ence in the touch of the bark, each leaf’s pattern, the root’s depth, and the angle and direction one or more trunks reaching for the sky.

The rain intensifies, becoming steady and washes away what snow had reached the ground. The forest changes to a different palette of colors before my eyes. The collective sounds from each corner merge into one orchestra.

I walk a bit more and find a stump beneath the few remaining leaves catching moisture and subsequently releasing a drop or two at a time. The taller trees sway slightly in the wind, their top branches reaching across the path, an embrace perhaps, or a canopy to provide some shelter. I rest my head back on a poplar, hands in the rain jacket pocket, and look up.

I close my eyes and listen for the myriad of sounds the forest conceals when intruded upon. When an uninvited guest emerges under the tree’s gateway, squirrels scurry up the tree trunks, deer turn to statues with alert eyes, daddy longlegs run from the littered trail to the nearest downed branch, and woodpeckers suspend their quest for food. After some time and the lull passes, heads, beaks and legs re-emerge. They scurry over leaves and crashing through brush resumes along with the other activities in preparation for the coming winter.

(4) The rain continues hours of persistent and relentless cleansing bliss, breaking down the snow and remaining ice into its source and simple elements. One cycle merging into another and this begins to make sense as I watch this beautiful part of nature play out before me.

(5) The longer I am here with the relenting rain, the more non-essential information and thoughts disappear, and over time music plays. It begins somewhere in the background, behind the scattered creatures and the tree limbs rubbing and clanking.

The vibrations are slight and require some concentration to discover and discern from nature’s physical presence. Eventually, it seeps into each element that surrounds me and the sky becomes more blue, the ground cover more green, and the sun, streaming through pine and poplar, more bright.

It reminds me of violins playing by

a faceless musician. The movement of hand and bow are blurred as each stroked appears in the past.

At times there is a halo. Some kind of light and haziness that radiates forth around each object I behold. I’m not sure if it is my eyes playing tricks, but the halo does not waver and the branches sway with shadows that cast across my eyes.

My breath is slow as many hours pass. The forest appears to take me in as the activity continues around me under the thinning sky. Finally, the sun is behind the western hills and a chill creeps into the air, reaching for my fingers. It is time to leave this place, for today at least. What I came here for, I found. What I needed was given to me.

I rise from the stump and look up at the treetop I was sitting beneath.

Searching through the limbs, there is something solid and dark. It does not move even when my jacket crinkles and my boots crunch the half-wet, half-dried leaves. Perhaps a raven or squirrel, perhaps an eagle watching, or another presence has followed me into the forest. Regardless, my place here within the landscape is that of an outsider and observer, looking for some peace, or at the very least, a place to walk and sit.

I instinctively become aware of nature’s ability and power to put back in order the landscape and its constituent pieces, the way nature is supposed to be without my intervention. And in that moment, as in each day, each layer is peeled away.

The excess material concerns, the silent and invisible bonds that have penetrated the psyche, the shackles around each leg, and the ingrained fear, that has created so much distance in myself from my roots and purpose is discarded. I am reminded of the symmetry that exists if you listen. I am reminded of the dependency and relatedness of art to nature, to words, to music, and back to nature. That nature, what I am walking within, is the core and root of art and music.

And from this I dip my pen into the ink well and write. a

ometimes I forget what it means to surrender my will to the Universe. It doesn’t mean I no longer get to choose what I want. It means I let go of trying to control how I get what I want.

Here’s what surrender looks like to me.

Two weeks ago I ate dinner at Joe’s Grill. I sat by the window where I could see the river and a gorgeous sunset. The staff was friendly and service was prompt.

After I ordered, Joe asked me to sample a wine that he’s considering adding to his wine list. It was excellent, as was my dinner. I left feeling well fed and completely happy. I loved Joe’s and couldn’t wait to go back.

The reason I went to Joe’s in the first place was because the week before, I read a rave review about it.

Then someone at work said they’d heard good things about Joe’s. The next day when I was thinking about where to go for dinner, I came across a flyer for Joe’s in the mail. I went because something kept putting Joe’s name right in front of me, and I took the hint.

Now, here’s what not surrendering looks like.

A week later, I decided to go back to Joe’s because I wanted the same great experience, even though twice that week I drove past Bob’s Bar-B-Que and noticed what a nice looking place it was and how easy it was to get to from my house.

When I got in the car to go to Joe’s that night, I was

nearly out of gas. The gas station is three blocks in the opposite direction of Joe’s — in fact, it’s on the way to Bob’s and even though it passed through my mind that it might be fun to go to Bob’s, I had decided on Joe’s and wasn’t going to change my mind. Leaving the gas station, traffic was heavy and making the left turn to get back on the road was frustrating. But I was going to Joe’s even if it took ten minutes to make that turn, which it almost did.

I could have been at Bob’s by the time I got out of the gas station.

Joe’s parking lot had been resurfaced that day so I had to park on the street three blocks away and pay the meter, too, but at least I was there.

When I finally got seated at a table by the restroom door, it seemed everyone was in a bad mood. Service was slow; my dinner came cold and undercooked. I sent it back but this time it was over-cooked and tasteless.

I couldn’t wait to get out of there, except now it was pouring rain, and I had to run three blocks to my car. I got soaking wet!

Since I was wet anyway, I decided to get some bread and milk at the store on the way home, and that meant I had to drive past Bob’s. The people sitting at the window tables were talking and laughing and having a wonderful time, and I saw that they now have complimentary valet service so everyone leaving Bob’s was getting into their car at curbside, nice and dry. Then I remembered what I’d heard about Bob’s the other day on the radio. They had a special that night of wild-caught Alaskan salmon, my favorite dinner.

What I had wanted was a nice evening and a good meal, but rather than be in flow with the energy of the moment, I put my mind in control mode and tried to relive the past. I thought I knew where to get what I wanted, but I have no way of knowing ahead of time which restaurants are having a good night and which ones are having an off night. The Universe knows, however, and it tried to tell me. If I had left the details up to the Universe to arrange, it could have guided me to where the good times were. But I had decided to go to Joe’s.
