A gift of enlightened prose

I

by Tim Miejan am grateful this thanksgiving season that I have the opportunity to to introduce you to an enlightened mystic you may not have discovered. He is the late Ilie Cioara, and his simple message is the discovery of our inner divine nature through the silence of the mind.

A Romanian who lived much of his life under Soviet occupation, he was a Christian mystic. Ilie practiced a mantra for 20 years. One day, he stopped. He awakened to the silence of the mind and the joy of experiencing the world in the now moment. After following this practice for several years, he woke up one day and experienced Enlightenment. His writing encompasses sixteen books, and he is being compared to Eckhart Tolle, Rumi and Krishnamurti, though comparisons often fall short. Ilie Cioara passed away in 2004.

I’ve wanted to share some excerpts with you for many months now and haven’t had the opportunity. I cannot keep them from you any longer. (Read this online for more selections.)

I was 55 years old. One morning, waking up from my sleep, I noticed that, psychologically, I was functioning differently from the night before.

The mind had lost its usual turmoil. In a state of serenity I had never felt before, I was functioning in perfect communion with my whole somatic structure.

Only after a couple of hours I realized what had happened to me, without pursuing this “something” as an ideal to accomplish. I was, to use a simile, in the situation of a man blind from birth, who had just gained his sight after undergoing surgery. Everything around me was as new. I had an overall perspective on things. A silent mind allows the senses to perceive things as they are.

The mind in its totality had become, through silence, an immense mirror in which the outside world was reflected. And the world I was perceiving directly through my senses revealed its own reality to me. My fellow beings, close friends or complete strangers, were being regarded indiscriminately, with a feeling of love I had never felt before.

If any reaction of the mind surfaced, it disappeared immediately in contact with the sparkle of impersonal Attention. A state of quiet and all-encompassing joy characterized me in all circumstances, whether pleasant or painful. My

behavior was that of a simple witness, perfectly aware of what was happening around me, without affecting my all-encompassing state of peace.

I Am Boundlessness I am spontaneous simplicity, Mind, heart and feeling, A whole being, absolute fullness, Love in action.

This state Reveals itself naturally; When the mind is awakened, All becomes One. The past melts away In the light of all-encompassing Attention; In emptiness, the Sacred reveals itself In its natural brilliance.

Experiencing the moment, The personal mind is dissipated, Expanding into Infinity As Universal Mind.

Each such encounter Transforms us radically, For in each sparkle of consciousness We are newness, Divinity, Reality!

Within each human being — as well as within each living being — a Primordial Light exists; It never changes Its clarity or Its ability to permeate all things. Without this Light we would be unable to understand ourselves or the Reality of Life in Its permanent movement. In Its absence, no authentic relationships can exist between human beings or with nature in general.

Although this Light is within us, awaiting for us to use It, nevertheless the path to the Light is so arduous! Why is it so difficult to discover it?

We have set foot on the Moon and we want to reach the soil of planet Mars, yet we cannot cross this infinitesimal distance between our surface consciousness and the inexhaustible Source of Light in the depth of our being?!

An interview with Barbara Marx Hubbard

F

by Tim Miejan uturist Barbara Marx Hubbard’s view of humanity’s future extends way beyond December 21, 2012, the reported end of the Mayan calendar, which doom-and-gloom merchants are using to scare us into believing the world is going to end. What’s ending, Hubbard says, is business as usual.

“This great time is an unprecedented opportunity to collectively make a planetary shift and step forward and give our greatest gifts to the emergence of a new co-creative human society,” she says. “If we do that, together we can ignite a new way of being that endures for decades to come.”

In her new book, Birth 2012 and Beyond, Hubbard has put forth a hopeful vision, declaring this time in history as a symbolic marker of what is actually being born within us that is new, that is good, creative and loving. December 22, 2012, has been selected as “Day One” of the next era of life on this planet, shifting toward sustainability, peace building and innovative solutions in every field and function.

We are facing an historic turning point. We are evolving from unconscious chance to conscious choice. We are entering what Hubbard calls the first age of conscious evolution. Why? Because we know we can affect our own evolution by all the choices we make — from the food we eat, the number of babies we have, the cars we drive, and the weapons we build.

We are facing the possibility of the collapse of our life support system, or what Hubbard believes is the emergence of something new, something better than we have ever known before.

the subject of Neale Donald Walsch’s new book, The Mother of Invention, is a world-renowned visionary futurist, evolutionary educator and inspiring speaker, and author of seven acclaimed books that communicate the new worldview of conscious evolution, a term that she coined.

She spoke with The Edge about her new book and the evolution of human consciousness.

What have you observed during the past dozen years that confirms this creative process is underway? When you look out your window, do you see universal humans out there doing their work and their play?

Barbara Marx Hubbard: I see more people

all the time feeling something growing from within them to more fully realize their heart’s desire, their desire to give more, to be more, to do more. Almost everybody, whether it be people in Unity Church or people in the emerging

Catholic world, or people who are dealing with crises problems around the world, wherever they may be, they know that they can’t resolve these problems by more of the same.

What that’s doing, without it even being idealistic or anything, is saying, “Well, something new must be happening.

What is it? How can I participate in it?

And how can I be part of it?” The crisis is driving people to want to be more.

Those of us who are tuning in to deeper life purpose, deeper commitment to evolutionary action, are becoming more universal, because we see ourselves connected to the whole. We feel part of the planetary body; we have a more cosmic consciousness.

I say the answer is this: Mother Earth is giving birth to a co-creative humanity.

There’s not a majority anywhere, but it’s cropping up everywhere, because old leadership does not have the authority to guide us.

They don’t have the answers.

BMH: They don’t — whether it is the

head of the Catholic Church, the Vatican, or whether it is the Republican or Democratic Party, whether it is the global corporations, or the universities that still have to teach everything in separate disciplines. The further up you go, the more specialized you are.

What’s happening is that evolutionary intuition is rising up. I feel there’s a global community arising, one that it is still very new. It’s not even a mass movement yet. Things that start are never mass movements.

Yes, they’re usually small grassroots efforts meant to solve a local problem.

BMH: To solve a local problem, they are

looking for new responses. You know, it’s not like everything is failing. There is a new book by Peter Diamandis called, Abundance: The Future is Better than You Think. There’s another book about Better Angels of Our Nature by Steven Pinker, which is saying that even for all the terrible things we’ve done, violence has declined. Even though it may not look that way, because we’re very sensitive to the breakdowns and the threats, and rightly so, there are breakthroughs in innovation and in consciousness, in

creativity, in technology. If you connect these breakthroughs, it really leads to a new world.

And yet, in chapter one of your new book, you write an urgent letter to the reader saying that the time is now.

BMH: That is what I’m saying. The time is now for everyone, for

more and more of us to come together, to recognize and act on this. That’s what I’m doing. That’s what my work is about now.

From your perspective, what kind of predicament are we in, globally?

BMH: I think we’re in a global crisis of unprecedented scale, with

global warming and climate change, and we don’t have the solution using any of the separated structures that are attempting to solve these issues, whether it be the United Nations, or the global corporations. So that has led to an uprising of concern for people who have been struggling within the system. Will it rise fast enough to actually affect the behavior quickly enough?

I don’t think anybody knows.

What was the main message you wanted to give people about Birth 2012?

BMH: The main message is that if we can connect that which

is loving, creative, and innovative in an expression of global coherence of the heart and of our creativity, we can effect the tipping point. With enough of us connecting heart with heart, center with center, innovation with innovation, prayer with prayer, through the internet and the noosphere, we can have a major impact on a more gentle transition toward the next stage of evolution.

Are you encouraged by the growing social media movement?

BMH: Very much so. I really think that the planet is growing a

new nervous system. I mean, when you think of Facebook as the third largest nation in the world, that’s so unprecedented, so amazing. Think of how many people are texting and twittering. The planet has created a nervous system for massive, rapid connectivity.

What’s good is that there are no gatekeepers. There is danger of it being stopped, certainly in totalitarian countries. In China, the state power is trying to stop it, but it seems that, without a catastrophe, it won’t be stopped.

In your book you cite as a personal goal to connect innovations and innovators who are contributing toward a more synergistic and functioning society. Can you give us an example of some of those innovators right now and how they’re contributing to healing the world?

BMH: Yes. I would say one of the most famous of all is the

Grameen Bank and Muhammad Yunus and microcredit loans.

That is definitely a way. I think the rise of alternative healing, a personal responsibility for health, of the understanding of food as a key factor in illness and health, the attention to obesity. I think the rise of permaculture. The rise of local communities.

The rise of socially responsible investment. All of these things are movements that have projects involved in them that could actually lead to an emerging world.

In your book, you refer to evolutionary shift circles. Can you explain a little bit about what those are all about?

BMH: Whenever a few people are gathered with a spiritual

impulse to connect, to resonate through the heart, to make a shift from their own ego to their essence, and then to connect to do whatever work in the world they are called to do, that’s an evolutionary circle. What we’re saying is, let’s all join

2012  Birth 2012 continued from page 9 together on December 22 to celebrate what’s being born. Evolutionary circles are one of the key social forms in which people are connecting and can connect to make a difference throughout the world.

You mention December of this year, which a lot of people tie to the Mayan calendar.

BMH: I’m not an expert on this, but the

Mayans were not talking about the end of civilization. They were talking about a phase change. I do not expect less. It does not mean the end of the world. It is the end of a cycle, in the sense that we really can’t continue to grow more and more as we have been doing in a finite womb of Earth. We can’t grow one more generation of population pollution and species extinction, so we have a built-in time factor.

Yet, at the same time we exist in a culture where some Christians are looking at this as the End Times and seem to have an apocalyptic view of what’s taking place.

BMH: Right. It’s interesting, because I see

the meaning of apocalypse as an unveiling of our deeper self. Apocalypse can mean the unveiling of the deeper self of humanity.

People throughout history who thought the end of the world was coming have never been right, and I don’t think they will be this time.

I think what they may be feeling is some kind of very deep fear — almost longing — because they don’t feel that they can participate in what’s emerging.

What difference can one person make in this process? I personally think it’s more than we think.

BMH: We know in history that great individ-

uals have totally changed everything, whether it be Jesus Christ or Abraham Lincoln or Winston Churchill or Albert Einstein. I actually think every person can make a difference.

Every single human being has within the impulse to express more of who they truly are. When anybody gets the idea that that’s what they can do, we each get turned on to do more. I think it’s innate in human nature to want to make a difference, to make your life meaningful.

What do you have planned for December 22?

What questions should we be asking ourselves at this time?

BMH: I think the biggest question for all of us

right now is, “What do I want to create? What do I need to create it better? And what do I want to give to others freely?”

In Thomas Jefferson’s words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident. All people are born creative.” We have been the most creative species that you have ever seen on this Earth. Back 50,000 years ago, we were in caves, and now we are ready to have a crisis of birth — or devolution and destruction — by our own power. All people are part of this. All people are born creative. And there’s nobody who’s helpless, nobody.

Where are you at in your process of evolution?

Are you facilitating groups and speaking about the urgency of this call?

BMH: The main thing I’m doing right now is

teaching Agents of Conscious Evolution on The Shift Network. I would like people to know if they feel they want to be more of an agent of their own evolution, and the evolution of our world. What do you anticipate that 2013 will look like?

BMH: Well, if the people like me have anything

to do about it, there will be a new story that shows the possibility of co-creating a new and better world. There will be a change in worldview from materialism and failure to conscious evolution. And everyone’s potential to participate!

When you get a new worldview you get a new world. It’s like the shift from medieval Christianity to the Renaissance and enlightenment. I think that worldview failed in some respects after the two world wars and the atomic bomb. It was hard to believe in process through knowledge, and we went through a period of a loss of vision.

But now there’s a new vision and a new story emerging, the story of the sacred story of evolution seen as an expression of a deep inner order or Divine process or universal intelligence or consciousness force.

The sacred story of evolution, and seeing ourselves as part of that story, empowers us to co-create. So another image of the universal human is the co-creator. a

Hope for the future Let’s focus on this extraordinary transition, not as the end of the world, but end of an age

by Cher Gilmore hat hope can there be for the future, when our senses are assaulted daily with news of the latest environmental disaster or economic failure? Why be hopeful when 24,000 people die every day of starvation or preventable diseases in a world of plenty? Because what we see, hear and experience is only part of the story, belying a larger reality behind the appearances.

In the bigger picture, we are in a time of extraordinary transition — the turn of a century and the end of a cosmic cycle (The Age of Pisces). As old structures resist and then break up to make way for the new, turmoil and upheavals ensue. People and issues become polarized, and the inevitable conflicts lead us to think it’s the end of the world, instead of the end of an Age. Behind the chaos, however, lie two major reasons for optimism. For one, the incoming cycle is governed by Aquarius, which brings the energy of synthesis, brotherhood, and cooperation. Evidence of Aquarian energies is already obvious in the unprecedented global changes of the past two decades — the breakup of the Soviet Union into sovereign states, reunification of East and West Germany, the end of apartheid in South Africa, and peace in Ireland.

These events would have been deemed impossible even 25 years ago. And changes continue today, fueled by the rising power of the people as displayed in the “Arab Spring,” Occupy Wall Street movement, and sister demonstrations around the world.

The young people are leading the way, and there is no reason to believe the protests will stop until real systemic change towards justice and peace takes place.

The second reason for hope is that, unbeknownst to most of humanity, we have powerful and beneficent help.

The Masters of Wisdom, a group of evolved teachers who have guided and stimulated our evolution for millennia, are now emerging into full public life with their leader, Maitreya, the World Teacher for this Age. Maitreya is awaited, albeit under different names, by all major religions as the one destined to lead humanity into a golden age of peace and justice.

The fact of his presence has been announced over the past 35 years by British author and esotericist Benjamin Creme. According to Mr. Creme, Maitreya has been physically in the world since 1977, assisting from behind the scenes until December 2009, when he began his public emergence with his first television appearance in this country. His basic message is “share and save the world.”

If we elect to change our current destructive course — that is, if we choose to redistribute the world’s resources more equitably, address our poisoned environment, and convert our rampant consumption to sustainable living — he is prepared to lead us into a brilliant new civilization such as the world has never known.

We don’t even have to know how to make the necessary changes. Disciples of the Masters are waiting “in the wings” to assist in transforming every field of activity when Hope continued on page 13  November 2012 edge magazine

Christ Consciousness & Christmas

by Alan L. Pritz wo thousand years ago, the man called Jesus came to Earth for a remarkable period and mission. Most people, however, don’t understand the true nature of a Christ nor how to best commune with or become one.

For Christians, Jesus was the only Christ. That’s understandable given a literal interpretation of his words without any comparative context or understanding. Yet, other religious traditions have exalted ones of similar divine stature. If you are unaware of this reality, simply read about various nonChristian spiritual greats. The following excerpts from the New Testament and Bhagavad Gita demonstrate what I mean: • “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” — John 1:1-5 • “I make and unmake this universe. Apart from Me nothing exists, O Arjuna. All things, like the beads of a necklace, are strung together on the thread of my consciousness and are sustained by Me.” — Bhagavad Gita 7:6-7 • “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6 • “Ah! Ye who into this ill world are come — fleeting and false — set your faith fast on Me! Fix heart and thought on Me…and undivided, unto My rest your spirits shall be guided.” — Bhagavad Gita 9:33-3

tical claims and remain truthful? They shared identical divine consciousness.

Consider if you and another person had radios capable of receiving the same stations. You’d get parallel broadcasts. Apply this analogy to Jesus and Krishna. Both were fully awake in Spirit, hence their respective titles of Christ and Krishna (Christna), meaning “Anointed One.” Their capacity to attain God-consciousness enabled them to speak from a shared platform of divinity.

In Christian tradition the triune aspect of God is termed Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. In Vedic tradition, the same triad is called Sat, Tat, and Om. The Father, or Sat, refers to the Transcendent aspect of Spirit that exists beyond the sphere of creation. The Son, or Tat, means the omnipresent, universal intelligence of God imminent within and governing all creation. This is the Christ or Krishna consciousness, otherwise called “Kuthastha Chaitanya” in India.

How does this apply to you? Although we typically think of ourselves as frail, mortal beings, the truth is we are souls, eternal aspects of Spirit. Through body identification we develop faulty selfawareness, the ego. By scientific meditation, our consciousness can be expanded beyond physical confinement to reunite with Spirit throughout creation. This attainment of Christ Consciousness was achieved by Jesus, Krishna, Buddha, and all Enlightened Ones. In fact, it is the divine purpose of life, to reawaken fully in Spirit. Remember: “Ye too are Gods.”

When Great Ones like these come on Earth to lead deluded souls back to their rightful home in Spirit, a profound spiritual light floods the ethers and reappears on birthdays associated with such Masters. Accordingly, at Christmas additional divine energy manifests corresponding to the birth of Jesus.

Unfortunately, these uplifting Christ vibrations are missed if our focus is on Santa and shopping.

To receive the true spiritual value of Christmas, we must bring the Christ vibration into our consciousness through meditative attunement. Doing so allows us to deeply commune with Christ and awaken more fully into our own divine potential.

So, this year try a more fulfilling, respectful approach to the season.

Dedicate one day to receiving Christ Consciousness through meditation and another day for social festivities.

Gathering with others for a day of spiritual communion fosters a joy that no material gift can bestow. The Mind & Healing Illness An Interview with author Richard Dupuis

or the past three decades, Richard Dupuis has devoted his life to helping people understand their true nature.

At home and abroad, he has provided group workshops and personal consultations for people seeking growth and healing.

His words are simple, and his understanding of healing is unquestionable.

These qualities are most apparent in his fourth book, The Cure: The Power of Mind to Cure Cancer and All Other Diseases. The book is brand new, but its message is eternal. The Truth and healing are simple and available to us all.

He also is the author of Creating Your Light Body, Ancient Wisdom, and From the Mouth of God. He lectures and teaches healing throughout the United States, Canada and internationally.

Richard Dupuis spoke about his new book and his new focus in Minnesota.

Your book starts out with the question: What are you going to do when your doctor gives up on you and sends you home to die? Isn’t this called the kiss of death?

Richard Dupuis: Act-

ually, the kiss of death is when your doctor says you only have a short time left to live and then sends you home to die.

Every year, here in the United States, over 500,000 people die of cancer, yet in spite of such a dire statistic, many

Where did the inspiration to write this book come from, and why did you decide to write it?

RD: Early one morning just before I woke

up, the Universe/God came to me and suggested I write the book and open a healing center.

What has been your greatest motivation in sharing this information?

RD: The knowledge that every year here

in the United States, thousands of people die needlessly from cancer and other diseases. Ninety percent of all prescription drugs treat symptoms only. When I came across these alarming statistics, I wanted to break through the myth that modern medicine actually cures disease.

All medical procedures treat symptoms.

So, even though the symptoms may go away, sooner or later the disease will return — usually sooner.

Must a reader be sick to benefit from the information in The Cure?

RD: Absolutely not. In fact, the best time

to read it is before a disease occurs. Anyone with a lifethreatening disease, cancer, diabetes, heart trouble, autoimmune disease or any other, will benefit from the information. The book offers the reader a viable alternative to the toxic lifethreatening procedures used by modern medicine to treat cancer and other diseases.

What do you believe are the main triggers that create disease?

RD: Stress is probably number one,

but suppressed feelings are also one of the major causes. Stress comes from thought, and of course, thought comes from mind. Stress plays a major part in disease because it suppresses the immune system. You have pathogens, viruses and bacteria in your body all of the time and when your immune system is suppressed, they take over and cause disease.

What do you suggest for relieving stress and strengthening the immune system?

RD: One of the best ways to release stress

and strengthen the immune system is to practice meditation; you don’t have to do a lot of meditation, just a few minutes per day are adequate. If you have cancer,

WELLNESS I suggest you join a support group, one where you can learn to safely express your feelings and explore your subconscious mind.

What did you find to be your greatest challenge in writing this book?

RD: Wading through the mountains of

statistics and data and making the book readable. I also had to edit the data down to something simple and easily understood by the reader.

I understand that you have recently moved from Seattle to Minneapolis. What prompted your move?

RD: I moved because not long before I

decided to write the book, I had a strong impression to open a healing center somewhere other than Seattle, where I was living at the time. It just so happens that the state of Minnesota has the highest rate of cancer per capita in the United States. Given that knowledge, I felt motivated to move to Minnesota. I like this area of the country and in the past I’ve found the people to be very open and accepting.

In The Cure, you talk a lot about ego. Why is it so important to understand ego?

RD: Ego can be diabolical when it comes

to healing. One of the problems you face when deciding to heal is ego’s resistance to change. It is the guardian of the status quo and no matter how sick you become, it will resist. Many people derive their sense of identity from being sick and if you become chronically ill, it’s likely you are identified with your illness. In this case, ego will staunchly defend its terri-

tory. Awareness is the key to clearing resistance. Once you become aware of your resistance, it will begin to diminish.

Tell me about your process for helping people to heal.

RD: I use a three-pronged approach. I

life-threatening disease, you don’t have to suffer to be cured. Modern medicine ignores the real cause of disease — the mind. The mind creates disease and it can cure disease. If you can’t totally accept this idea, that’s OK. The techniques I present will work for you anyway.

start by helping those I am working with explore their feelings. For some, this is very difficult, so I may skip this process.

However, it is very effective. The second step is to explore and clear the subconscious mind of thought forms, patterns and beliefs that create disease. The third step is to transmute the disease energetically. I do this by transmitting the healing energy of my “light body,” into the disease. This raises the frequency of the disease and allows the body to heal.

These techniques are very effective and can be learned and used by anyone who wants to do self-healing.

I hear that you can actually do your work over the phone. Is that right?

RD: Yes. I have worked with people

all over the world by phone. People often wonder how that works. Quantum physics says that time and space are an illusion and don’t actually exist. That has certainly been my experience. What I do, works just as well over the phone as it does in person.

How many books have you had published and which one is your favorite?

RD: Four of my books have been

published. Of course, the current one is my favorite. It deals with a topic that

Cancer — A Disingenuous Disease

The Enduring Human Spirit

t occurred to me that we often feel very alone during a life-challenging illness. Since openly sharing my journey with Stage One Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, I’m amazed by the support from my healing community peers and Edge Magazine readers. We are lucky to have access to so many integrated healing and wellness resources here; there is a path and opportunity for everyone.

September, the anniversary of my diagnosis, was a month of emotional ups and downs leading to new levels of self-trust. Although there are people who question my choices — even my sanity — it’s important to follow one’s own path. I’m grateful to Tim Miejan and Cathy Jacobson of The Edge for allowing me to share this journey. Hopefully others will benefit.

Some beacons lighting my path are readers who share their own stories.

Another is being gifted the honor of a sweat lodge, my first ever, by Claudia and her husband Jim. When she told me she wanted to do a sweat lodge for me, I didn’t understand the impact it would have. I was told to invite some friends, and Claudia said she would invite some clients who came to her as a result of the July Edge article. We met on September 21, the eve of Fall Equinox.

Like the womb

The sacred space of the sweat lodge enveloped us like the womb it represents, connecting us to our ultimate nurturing Mother: Earth. The lodge represents Earth Mother, Feminine Divine, Sacred Mother, and the Healed-Mother. Inside this womb with caring people, I realized my less-than-ideal childhood no longer mattered; I experience love now.

Here, it’s possible to accept the kind of healing that happens between humans and Spirit.

The healing was facilitated by medicine people. Inside were Claudia and two other singers; outside, her husband, Jim, and two other brethren tended the fire that heated the stones. Nine of us prayed, meditated and sought healing.

allow others to witness our struggle, while simultaneously accepting the universal healing energy. One beauty of a ceremony like a sweat lodge is that anyone present can be healed if they are open to the possibility.

Leading up to and following the sweat lodge, I had several conversations with women who faced cancer and successfully rebounded. For Kathy, it took four years before doctors declared the small egg-sized tumor on her neck “dead.”

“It also took me those same four years to overcome the emotional and psychological impact that cancer had on my life,” Kathy shared. “I put my nose to the grindstone.”

Her only focus was on her health and her desire to get well. “My house and yard were neglected; I focused on me!” She admitted, “Once I committed myself to getting well, information just fell into my path.” Thank you, Kathy, for your courage and willingness to reach out, unselfishly helping others since 2004. Her list of resources is posted on BeingGenius.com In 1995, Robin had breast cancer; she had a lumpectomy, never skipping a beat at work. In 2000, a lump on her thigh was an encapsulated cancerous tumor that was removed. She persevered, although fatigue caught up with her and she found herself falling asleep just sitting in a chair during her 10-minute breaks. After 29 years of service to the same employer, she retired in 2005.

The next year, a mammogram showed cancer in both breasts; she had a double mastectomy and then chose prosthesis over reconstructive surgery. Robin is content with her decisions.

The conversations we had helped deepen my understanding of the enduring nature of the human spirit.

Robin is living a healthy post-cancer life.

To her, “life feels good!” I heard music and delight in her voice. As we talked further, she shared a few gems about what is making a difference to prosper in retirement. Like Kathy, she made lifestyle changes. Robin found foods that helped regain her strength and noticed that she didn’t suffer from the devastating effects of radiation like others did.

I asked Robin to answer a personal

question, and she eagerly agreed.

“Anything to help,” she said.

I asked: “Did you experience any early childhood trauma? I ask because there is evidence that painful childhood experiences seem to greatly increase one’s risk of cancer.”

“Absolutely,” Robin said. “Yes, emotional trauma. That was why I decided to set better boundaries with people. I am changing old patterns of behavior. I now see discomfort as a gift. When I am uncomfortable, I know I’m acting in new ways; this makes me happy!”

It reminds me of when friends and clients ask, “How do I know I’m not crazy?” As long as you’re asking the question you’re not crazy; it’s when you stop asking that you may have gone astray. From another’s viewpoint, though, you may appear crazy when you follow your spiritual path.

SHARE THEIR STORIES

Kathy’s and Robin’s stories are only two selected from multitudes. Not everyone lives to share their stories. Again, I am reminded of the fragility and the strength that is part of being human.

These women both have overcome difficult challenges. They are alive. They are wonderful models of strength, empowerment and support. Both reached out to share their stories, their lessons, and their support. Thank you for your impassioned courage to live and share.

Yes, there is reason for illness. Learn the lessons that the suffering has brought, see it with new eyes, feel it with a new heart. Accept the wisdom of the lesson. Wash it clean with your thoughts, love, self-respect. Treat yourself with the utmost of care. Fill your body, mind, and spirit with good food, good thoughts, and good actions.

Just as in goal-setting, be clear about what you want and information could just fall into your path, like Kathy experienced. Being open is all it takes. It could be a book “glowing” on the bookstore shelf, a friend’s comment that gives you new insight, a TV or radio interview leading to foods that are best for you right now, or an invitation to a meditation circle.

Suggested Tips to Regain Health Here are some things that both Kathy and Robin found helpful: • Obtain and maintain an alkaline pH in the body • Improve your sense of well-being • Strengthen your immune system • Keep your cells healthy and strong • Increase the body’s oxygen levels • Shut off the news (who needs that negativity?)

A song drifts into my mind, “Go pray upon the mountain.

Go pray beside the ocean.

Wash your spirit clean.

Thank you for the suffering.

Be grateful for the lessons Wash your spirit clean.”

The words are from the song, “Wash Your Spirit Clean,” by Walela. They buoy me like a loving mother’s womb, the loving spirit of the Divine, and the love we can hold for ourselves.

We can heal. We can endure. We can listen to the inner voice that guides us bravely on our own journey. Yes, we do stray from our path sometimes. It is the return to the path that allows us to be grateful for the suffering and thankful for the lessons. I cannot possibly know the correct path for anyone else, and the Divine only knows how often I stray from my own path.

The Fool in the Tarot deck appears to blindly trust. Yet, it is the Fool who trusts the universe to meet her and support her on your journey. There may be a fine line between insanity and divinity. I’m grateful for living now

by Carol McCormick e live in tough times — full of energy high tides and rampant solar flares. All this chaos is a hotbed for creativity. It provides us opportunities for growth, joy, and compassion, as well as de-cluttering and refining our individual lives.

This intense energy can help us let go of our past and step forward to meet our future.

Continuously changing circumstances of relationships, employment, finances, climate, and weather compel us to live with uncertainty and insecurity and seek peace by turning inward and communicating with our Divine Creator.

Our current turmoil reminds me of when I was in the transition phase of labor, giving birth to my children. The pains were not rhythmic and predictable. Waves came on top of each other giving me no time to get ready for them or to relax and rest. It felt exhausting and discouraging. Yet, this transition time gave me hope, because it signaled that the birth was imminent.

I believe that we are in the transition phase of humanity’s birth into what Rudolph Steiner termed a 5th Age when we would live out of understanding and insight with a broader perspective. I think that before we can live in wise harmony as One Family, our egos ferociously fight for their survival. I am tempted to judge, label and criticize, because it makes me feel like I am in control. The overwhelming relentless changes, deep disagreements and heart-bruising failures I face can only be surmounted by deeply resting. In order to survive and thrive I seek the deep rest found in meditation.

Here is a meditation I learned from Dr. James Ulness at Spirit United Church that helps me feel grateful and healthier: I close my eyes and imagine myself in a peaceful garden surrounded by flowers, trees, birds, and butterflies, with a stream flowing down from the mountains. I wait here resting, thinking thoughts of kindness, mercy, justice, and peace. Eventually I begin to sense a presence coming towards me. Telepathically, I have an interactive exchange with this Divine Being who gives me the help, guidance, strength, and wisdom I need to deal with challenging

life situations. After a while, I begin to hear new sounds like thunder and the Music of the Spheres as my kundalini rises. Visiting this peaceful garden many times, I experience an Absolute Silence, which mystics call “The Void.” And I know beyond thought that no matter how far I have fallen down the rabbit hole, this Divine Presence can lift me up.

Reign of unity

Prayer helps me get through the battle with my ego. Each morning and evening I pray, “Create Your reign of unity now through our fiery hearts and willing hands” (part of a translation of The Lord’s Prayer from Aramaic

by Neil Douglas Klotz in his book, Prayers for the Cosmos).

Yet, words are not enough. Our current times require hard joyous work, as well. I am called to go beyond “saving” our planet to creating it as a home for balance and harmony.

I am to work as a co-creative partner with nature. To fill this role, I work on purifying and clarifying my emotional body and energy field and unite with others to purify the energy field around and in Earth. I have ample information about the destruction of Earth’s ecology. Now it is time for me to do something about it.

Being human, I resist change and cling to the status quo. When feeling overwhelmed by all the diseases, deaths, disasters, failures, and uncertainties, I comfort myself by telling the oldest story I know. It is just four sentences and goes like this: There was once a woman who lived in hell.

She could leave at any time.

She never did.

She knew the names of the streets.

Then I can feel grateful for the intense energy surrounding and immersing our planet.

It is here to help me learn how to live in harmony with my fellow humans, all sentient beings, and nature. Wolf

My teacher, my protector, my mentor

W

by Saren Lightsong hen I was 5 years old I went through a very violent experience.

During that experience a large white wolf, visible to me but no one else, came and stood over me where I lay. I curled my spirit self up into him, burying my head in his fur. Instead of smelling the vile smells of violence, my nostrils filled with the clean clear scent of arctic winds. Long white fur tickled my face.

I pushed into the downy undercoat, comforting and warm. I listened to his strong heart beat rather than the sounds of violence. He protected me. He could not stop what was happening, but he took care of me throughout the ordeal, and when it was over, showed me what to do and how to get home.

That wolf has been my guide and companion ever since. He accompanies me now on every shamanic journey I take, and sits by my side as I assist others in their own healing.

Once when participating in a guided visualization, I turned off the leader’s path and went out into the Universe instead. Suddenly I saw a very specific landscape: a road with a small, peculiarly shaped hill next to it. Two large

golden wolves were standing in the road.

It was a brief, powerful and memorable flash.

Years later, my partner and I moved up north to a home by Lake Superior.

One day I felt a sudden desire to go for a drive and explore unfamiliar back roads, so we set out. After an hour or so of delightful woods, winding this way and that, my partner turned from one road onto the next, and I gasped!

“This is where I saw the wolves!”

That exact moment a huge golden wolf stepped out in front of our car. He stood and stared into my eyes as his mate passed behind him and crossed

the road. He stared and stared and stared. We heard a car coming and he walked into the woods. We drove down the hill, but when the car passed, the wolf came back out on the road. I turned in my seat, resting my head on my folded arms. The wolf and I stared and stared and stared into each other’s eyes. When another car came along behind us we went our separate ways.

A few years later my partner and I, arriving home late at night, saw a beautiful tall wolf in our yard. We pulled into the drive. He came near our car and caught my eye. He bowed down, Wolf continued on page 20 

The next morning I went out to see his paw prints in the light snow, and found huge prints showing he had been pacing in our yard for a while, seemingly waiting for us to get home.

When I went back inside I had the urge to turn on the TV. There was a wolf bowing the exact bow I had witnessed the night before!

It is a bow of gratitude and respect. The wolf in the PBS special laid the leg of a caribou in front of its alpha couple, then backed away and bowed.

Soon after that I began to see a lone white wolf hanging around our home.

At night I would feel its presence pull me out of a deep sleep, and I would get up and look out my window to find it staring at me. It looked like it was made of moonlight.

Wolf is my family, my pack. Wolf is my teacher, my protector, my mentor.

I am so utterly, profoundly, wonderfully grateful for this loving relationship. I pray for their protection every day. I commune with them every day. I love them and they love me. They love the planet, and they love humans, despite all of the violent intent pointed at them now and through the centuries.

I hope you will join me in this season of thanksgiving and whisper a prayer of gratitude and respect for them, ushering in a fully awake relationship of good will towards them from all human beings everywhere.

A G ift from the other side

by Glinda Davis ometimes when a loved one passes away, a part of them still remains….

My mother was one of the most aspiring and inspiring people I have ever known. She had a way of lighting up the day, with her enduring positive outlook on life. She enjoyed making people feel at home, laughing and always trying to find the good in everything, no matter how bleak or hopeless the situation.

The day I received a phone call and learned she had cancer was one of the worst days of my life, but even then she remained optimistic, reassuring me everything would be fine. She had surgery to remove part of her throat, and for that reason she was unable to speak. For my mother, this was the worst thing that could have happened. Her ability to verbalize with sound was abruptly taken away from her, and her smiles became a little less jolly and the sparkle in her eyes a little less bright.

Still, she remained steadfast, and optimistic. She learned to use a voice machine held against her neck to speak. In a few months time, she was able to communicate quite well, and in doing so she regained some of the self-respect that she had lost in the beginning, when she realized she was unable to speak. Understand that my mother was a very proud woman. When she lost her ability to speak, she felt a certain loss of self, because helping people through the use of her voice was her identity; she felt stripped of the one thing she held so dear to her heart.

When cancer finally took her life, a bright star was dimmed, leaving the world a little colder, and less inviting. Several years ago, my mother and I discussed the uniqueness of life and all that it had to offer. I can remember as if it were yesterday when she said to me, “You know, when I die, I’m going to come back and haunt you. I’m going to sit by you on the bed.” This was a usual statement coming from my mother, but we both laughed, saying nothing more about it.

As years past, I developed an interest in the paranormal and began researching ways to gather evidence of hauntings. In late August 2006, I decided to place a camera in my room, to practice capturing images. To my astonishment, as I sat in the living room watching, an image of my mother appeared, of all places in my bedroom closet. At first, I had to adjust my gaze, blinking, and then squinting to look closer at the screen. To my disbelief, it was indeed my mother who had come to visit, to say, “See, I told you I would come.” For several minutes, almost hours it seemed, I sat staring, watching her every move, wondering what I should do.

I decided I should go speak to her.

I went to my room, sat down on the bed, and gazing in her direction I said, “Mom, I can’t see you but I know you’re there. I just wanted to say that I love you, and I miss you, thank you for coming to see me. I love you mom, forever.” And then I slowly slid the closet door shut.

I sat there and cried. This was my way of saying goodbye to her, a chance I didn’t have before she died because we lived in different states. Her death was unexpected; she passed away peacefully in her sleep. I am grateful my mother gave me the opportunity to say goodbye.

My friend who was also there at the time was in awe of this great event, and kept asking, “What should we do?”

I simply said, “What my mother would have wanted, to just simply say, hello and I love you.”

I share with you the picture I captured of my mother that day. It is grainy because it was taken with an old computer camera, but it gives me a certain sense of possibilities, and that is what my mother was all about: reassurance and an endless amount of possibilities.

NUTRITION A Gluten-free, Dairy-free Whole Food Recipe

Chicken Casserole with Root Vegetables

t’s not easy to find a dairy and gluten-free hot dish!

This recipe is very versatile, so add your favorite vegetables. Its creamy consistency makes for a comforting dish. I used Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free baking and biscuit flour, but you can use any gluten-free flour. If you can tolerate ghee (clarified butter), add 2 TBS for flavor when simmering the sauce. You can also try this with leftover turkey (season with rosemary instead of thyme) from Thanksgiving.

Ingredients 3 cups cooked brown rice 2 baked chicken breasts, shredded 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided use 3 tablespoons water (more if needed) 6 tablespoons gluten-free flour 3 1/2 cups water, divided use 2 teaspoons thyme 2 vegetable or chicken bouillon cubes (low sodium) 4-5 cloves garlic, minced 1 medium onion, diced 1 cup frozen peas 2 cups vegetables, thinly sliced (carrots & parsnips work well)

1/2 cup plain, gluten & dairy free breadcrumbs (optional) Salt and Pepper to taste Directions 1. Chicken: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Salt and pepper the chicken breasts, place in a casserole dish and bake covered for 30-35 minutes or until done.

2. Sauce: In sauce pan bring 2 tbsp oil and 3 tbsp water (or more if needed) to a light simmer. Add flour slowly and blend until smooth. Add thyme. Slowly add 3 cups of water and the bouillon cubes. Blend until smooth. Add chicken and mix thoroughly.

3. Vegetables: Sauté the onions, garlic and veggies (not the peas!) in olive oil, until the onions are transparent.

4. Lightly grease a casserole dish. Layer rice on the bottom, then add all vegetables. Pour 1/2 cup water over vegetables. Then spread the chicken mixture evenly on top. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs on top. Bake covered at 400 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Then, remove the foil or lid and continue baking until bubbly and the vegetables are soft, approximately 10-15 minutes.

A moment with Northfield author Sherry Janes

What, or who, inspired you to become a writer?

Sherry Janes: One

of my first spiritual teachers and I were talking one day about what direction I should go next. This would have been 1988 or 1989, after I had moved to the Phoenix area. Out of the blue, he said, “Have you ever thought about being a famous novelist?” The way he said it made me realize he’d seen something about my future. At that point, I had not thought about it just the way he said it, but I was already writing little stories and poems. Because it was someone I trusted who said it, I began to think more seriously about it.

When did you begin writing with the intention of being published?

SJ: In the early ’90s, I received a big

push. I began to get the beginning of a story, seeing it as a movie that just ran in my head and kept going, over and over. Finally, I decided to write it down and hoped that maybe it would stop. I wrote it down and that part stopped, but more came, then more and more, until I had a book. I really learned how to write doing that, and realized I needed some classes and feedback, if I was really going to publish it.

Why do you write in the genre that you’ve chosen?

SJ: I have immersed myself in meta-

physics, energy healing, and spirituality for 35 years, so it was natural that it would find its way into my writing. I began with the Edgar Cayce Readings

and was very involved with his work for some years, here in Minnesota. I learned a few different types of energy healing until I found Christa Healing, a form of spiritual healing, which is far and away the best and most powerful method of spiritual healing I’ve found. If people understood how this could help them, they’d be lining up.

Finally, I realized this is what my particular mission is, to write about these topics in a fun way, doing it just as I had been doing it, writing about characters people would love, and stories that made them keep the light on longer at night, so I just kept going. I truly didn’t know just what genre it was going to be in the beginning stages, other than fiction.

I’m surprised at how many people love this kind of fiction. And now that it is 2012, we are all facing a tremendous shift that will send us into the first true spiritual dimension. Seeds in the Blood, the second in the Spirit Song series, deals with that.

What is peace?

hat is peace?

Peace is the silent porcupine emerging from the cement culvert and onto the gravel road. With simple determination and no distractions, he crosses the road and into the ditch where water has pooled with a thin layer of ice preserved under-

neath afternoon shadows.

A northwest blows and 50-foot pine trees sing and sway in unison while their crowns and limbs rub and clank against others reaching for the suns’ rays. Bits of bark and pine needles fall like snow and absorb into the knee-high autumn grasses that have become brown and bent from the recent hard freeze.

The forest is alive in other ways, and provides a sanctuary, not only to the porcupine, but the ravens, finches, deer, squirrels, and others hidden in dens, under brush, and in the tree-tops. A green trough is laying on its side, the 50 pounds of cracked corn well devoured. Socks holding thistle are tossed about the nail holding them to a pine tree, the birds having split the shell and finding the seeds.

This autumn day is near perfection. Although the air is cold, my soul and heart are warm and the sun is generous with spare fingers of light reaching for me through the branches. Walking toward the prairie, the pine trees are situated in long rows with a tunnel between each. Light streams forth down this tunnel, and shadows run across the land and in between each tree and through the tall grasses.

I find solace and snippets of peace when I run into the forest with no planned direction, no agenda, and keep going until my legs give out as I fall into the prairie grass, looking at the sky and the slow moving clouds. For hours I lay there and listen and breathe deep breaths of stinging air. I hope for rain. I hope for sun. I hope for each minute and hour to blend and lead into another minute and hour so I can remain a part of this intimate collage of things.

So many things comprise the immediate landscape that I only see a fraction of from my earthen position.

Elongated Indian grass sways and bends at their middle, presenting an offering of a hungry ladybug. From a distance, I hear a red squirrel and its high pitched cry, announcing

the presence of an outsider. I hope they will soon forget I am here and continue their previous activities.

No image or photo can truly capture the glass sky without any clouds and the tall pine jumps at you from the background. This is nature. This is nature undisturbed and at peace and I come here to insert myself as unobtrusively as possible into the workings of this machine.

As the sun nears 12:00 and reaches over the tops, open fields gather more light and before our eyes, things gain life, gain more of a belonging, upright stance as this is their land.

This is their place.

Time passes and nature seemingly has forgotten that I am here buried within the grass and earth. I imagine that the trees extend their roots from the tree line and they slowly creep toward me, and when my eyes close and I drift into a whisper of sleep, they merge into my limbs and replace human organs with tree hearts, acorns, pine needles, and maple leaves. When I awake, I no longer have fear, doubts, questions, or a feeling of being disconnected. I now hear the heartbeat of each tree. I see the forest through each eye at the end of the branches. I feel the soft, black, cool earth through my roots. Most importantly, I know the collective thoughts of the trees, guardians of the landscape, and the symbiotic relationship with grass, shrub, ferns, each grain of sand, dirt, and sunflower.

When I think of peace, I think of here, nestled within the trees and prairie, and the nature both mobile and entrenched with deep roots. Each root and paw connected in a web born from the universe and the beginning roots I grow tapping into this energy. a

ercury stations retrograde on Nov. 6. That’s Election Day in the USA, so watch out for surprises. A solar eclipse in Scorpio on the 13th and a lunar eclipse in Gemini on the 28th push us to transform our lives and align ourselves inwardly with the new world we are trying to create.

Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Big opportunities to step into your power and use your passion to create meaningful change are right there on the horizon. But you need to connect with your truth before you can take that step. You can’t afford to make choices any longer based on what the other people in your life tell you is the right thing.

Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…You could see a relationship end suddenly this month, thanks to the Scorpio solar eclipse. But you’ve got a fuller sense of who you are now, and clearing out the people who aren’t aligned with the real you makes room for people who do get you. People, by the way, who have the resources and know-how you’ve been seeking.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)…With Mercury retrograde in your 7th House, life continues to push you to understand why you make the choices you make within your relationships. The lunar eclipse in your sign on the 28th carries the potential for major illumination. Cultivate the willingness to meet your truest Self.

POETRY Meditation on a Tree

As your sapling pierced the ground, from roots deep below, did it worry where it was going, or did it just grow?

Was there a tree that came before — clearing the way, or were you content your needs would be met, day after day?

When another tree blocked the sun and you grew towards the west, how did you know how to survive and not be distressed?

When a young branch was chewed by a grazing deer, did your other branches become overwhelmed with fear?

Do you compete with the other trees or feel second best, or do you find comfort today with the birds on your branches you caress?

The leaves that appear each spring and drop each fall, are you attached to them or do they mean nothing at all?

Does it tire you to stay in one place with roots that keep you still, or is it reassuring to not have the problems of free will?

When the wind blows through your branches and a storm is about to show, how do you find peace amidst the turmoil as you are thrown to and fro?

As I see you before me, so many questions come to my mind, only to be laughed at by the silliness of mankind.

We ponder our days with how should we live and what should we do, am I doing this right, is this the best choice, my life needs a redo.

With hands upon your bark, I feel the calmness come over me as I pray, help me to feel that all is well, at least for today.

The scar on the side of your head is the opening that spilled blood on her hand.

Are you risking your neck again, five ways at once?

Are you risking your breath?

How bad are your angels?
