IT’S HARD NOT TO focus on what’s taking place now — with climate change turning normal summer storms into lotteries of destruction; with war, threats of terror, and wounded and dead servicemen and women continuing to dominate headlines, as they have since Sept. 11, 2001; with economic inequality growing as jobs are shipped overseas and corporations avoid paying taxes, leaving the general public to fend for itself in a nation with a crumbling infrastructure. And yet, in esoteric circles, the conversation remains focused on the Great Shift. In the midst of the intense, external chaos we all are experiencing, teachers of esoteric spirituality inform us that the human species is undergoing an unprecedented change — that our collective DNA is being recalibrated to allow for a multidimensional existence. They also say the planet is undergoing an energetic shift in frequency, moving beyond three dimensions to five or six or more. From a consciousness perspective, we seem to be trending toward greater presence — existing more fully in the present moment. One of the world’s greatest teachers of presence is author Leonard Jacobson, who spent some time in service at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community in Minneapolis, and his message is this: “In truth, there is no life outside of the present moment. Sooner or later, we must all come to terms with this simple fact. “If you are to awaken fully into the present moment, and remain fundamentally grounded in Presence, then you will have to liberate yourself from entanglement in your own past. It’s not the true past. It is the remembered past, which you access through the mind whenever you think. You will also have to free yourself from the imagined future, which is nothing more than the past projected forward. It is simply a fantasy.” A growing number of people in non-spiritual settings — acting, art, athletics, corporate leadership and teambuilding — are espousing presence as a means to achieve greater self-

mastery in whatever you set out to do — though Jacobson and others remind us that presence is not a means to an end, but a way of being. The combination of more people existing in presence, more people choosing to develop their enhanced senses of telepathy, precognition and clairvoyance, and more people accessing information from multiple dimensions portends a positive future, one that seems directly at odds with the state of the planet right now. The question arises as to how the human ego can be tamed in the midst of all this change — and how the evolution of technology will interact with the evolution of human consciousness. Several recent motion pictures, including Her and Transcendence, reveal a not-too-distant future in which artificial intelligence becomes self-aware. Contrary to what we think, we are living in the most peaceful time ever. Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker, in his recent book, The Better Angels of Our Nature, concludes that the decline of violence “may be the most significant and least appreciated development in the history of our species.” Professor Joshua Goldstein writes inWinning the War on War that fewer people are dying in war than at any time in the past 100 years. My personal response to all of this — chaos run amok, suggestions of spiritual and energetic evolution, reports of greater peace — is to not get overwhelmed by distractions from the future, as fun as it may to speculate about them. I’d like to believe that we are moving toward a more intuitive and soul-based existence. I’d like to believe that personal healing will not be a necessity in the future, and that leaving the body (death) will not be a tragedy, but a conscious choice, in the time to come. Let’s stay focused on now. Let’s love each other as ourselves. Let’s keep learning, and have as much fun as possible! a Tim Miejan is editor and co-publisher of The Edge, as well as a writer, editor and designer who assists small businesses and individuals. To Remember by Rebecca Sarino
There is a place inside of me that remembers. It’s not such a small place so I am surprised how often forgetting happens. Maybe if it wasn’t for the fact of how deliciously painful it is to remember—how seductive, how raw, then forgetting would be more tolerable. What a clever thing, the mind, and how tempting to surrender to. Again. But there are other things, ocean-deep fathomless things, that wave their arms wildly at me and tug at my shirt sleeves imploring me to return. And so I do, I make my way home, sinking comfortably into the throne of being, into the enchanted dark forest of here. How good to remember. a Rebecca Sarino is newly transplanted from Boulder, Colorado, and the majestic arms of the Rocky Mountains. Sometimes our dearest teachers are dogs Spirit Leaves
by Janet Michele Red Feather
I live a relatively hermitic existence. As an empath, I seem to require lots of “down time.” I have no pets, yet all of nature seems to command my love and compassion. Still, I sometimes long for animal friends in my life. This notion was affirmed upon my initiation into the realm of psychic pets. Two years ago, my foray into pet communication began when I met Phyllis Galde, proprietress of Galde Press, Inc. Phyllis and her team produce metaphysical books, a paranormal reporting magazine FATE [www.fatemag.com], and Species Link [www.specieslinkjournal. com], an interspecies telepathic communication journal. This “First Lady of the Paranormal” maintains a magical home. Fairies and devas reside in an elemental garden. House and yard host a rollicking brood of rescue cats and dogs, six chickens named after ’50s starlets, and a slinky yellow Boa named Isis. One day in Phyllis’ kitchen, her dog Ole greeted me. I stroked his reddish fur. Every time I went to pet the top of his head, he would give it a vigorous shake and tuck his nose under my elbow. I realized that I had been distracted by the high energy and telepathy of the humans present. Ole was demanding my complete focus. He began emanating pure affection. Then, something strange happened. I began to “hear” Ole’s thoughts. This “hearing” differed from reception of human transmissions: the dog’s ideas seemed more immediate, easier to discern. Ole “told me” to avoid the top of his head to keep his crown chakra open. Instead, I pet his ears, chest and shoulders. When I finally got the message and avoided the top of his head, he laid his head on my lap with great deliberation. Having established a link, he next invited me to do energy work on his left hip, strained earlier from stalking squirrels. I was slightly abashed, not having recognized sooner that dogs can communicate knowingly. I reported this to Phyllis. She just smiled, already quite accustomed to interspecies communication with animals, plants and, more recently, water. Phyllis’ partner and best friend, David Godwin, had been alive to witness my first telepathic communication with their smaller dog, Olga. One morning, Olga stared up at me through straggly honey blonde-and-silver strands of shaggy wet hair. I said to Olga, “Where have you
been? You look scruffy.” David chuckled quietly. “She likes to run through the neighbor’s sprinkler. They call her ‘Scruffy.’” I was amazed: I realized it was Olga who had communicated her nickname and had David validate it. I wasn’t trying to be rude toward Olga — she’s so cute! This determined little dog had found a way to “explain” her bedraggled appearance. I’m grateful for this connection with the “critters,” as Phyllis affectionately refers to her little family. Olga, I later learned, was named after Olga Prindle, Phyllis’ maternal grandmother. Ole was named after Ole Galde, Phyllis’ paternal grandfather. In classic Norsk tradition, Ole and Lena traveled together — golden retriever and black Labrador. Lena has since transitioned to the spirit world, and the entire household — animal and human — grieved. In a more recent visit, Ole greeted me in true retriever form, shoe clenched in his teeth. He dropped his trophy, sat at my feet, leaned his head on me and began transmitting. What he told me was that he likes to sit upright, because having all four feet close together grounds him. I realized he was reminding me to ground myself. I tend to fly around in the high energy present in Phyllis’ home. When I reported Ole’s message to Phyllis, she just smiled, confirming that, “Yes, he’s a teacher.” I’ve never taken a workshop or read books on animal communication; I’ve learned animal telepathy directly from a dog. Phyllis affirmed that, for some, that is the purest, most natural way to learn. I’ve always felt a connection to creatures and loved them, but now, I use telepathy at every opportunity. I speak to birds with my heart. I communicate with large fish in Chinese restaurant aquariums. Thanks to Phyllis Galde’s unconditionally loving pets, I am forever changed in the way I view and relate to the different species on our beautiful Earth. a Janet Michele Red Feather, J.D., M.A., has taught literature and composition for 18 years at the university, state, tribal and community college levels. How to overcome excuses: Tips to meet your goals by Dan Waldschmidt
Great people throughout history often fail, quite miserably, before finally reaching their goals. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime; Winston Churchill lost every public election until becoming prime minister at age 62; Henry Ford went bankrupt five times; Albert Einstein was a terrible student and was expelled from school; Sigmund Freud was booed from a stage. Ideas, brilliance, genius – they all mean nothing without the guts, passion and tenacity necessary to make your dream a reality. But often, people fall back on excuses and give up on trying to reach their goals. Most of us have dreams, and many of us have big ones, but few of us actually see them through. Here are six tricks for jumping off the excuse train and forging the path to your goals: Avoid the need to blame others for anything. Mean, smallminded people know that they suck. That’s why they are so cranky and eager to point out others’ mistakes. They hope that by causing others to feel inadequate, everyone will forget about how woefully off the mark their own performance is. Don’t blame anyone, for any reason, ever. It’s a bad habit. Stop working on things that just don’t matter. Not everything needs to be done in place of sleep. If you work for a boss, then you owe them solid time. You can’t cut that out. You can, however, cut out television time, meetings and anything else that gets in the way of achieving your goals. Refuse to let yourself wallow in self-doubt. You’re alive to succeed. Stop comparing your current problems to your last 18 failures. They are not the same. You are not the same. Here’s something to remember: Your entire life has been a training ground for you to capture your destiny right now. Stop whining. Go conquer. Ask yourself, “What can I do better next time?” And then do it next time. If you spend a decade or two earnestly trying to be better, that’s exactly what will happen. The next best thing to doing something amazing is not doing something stupid. Proactively take time to do things that fuel your passion. Exercise is a great example. Living in the moment requires you to live at peak performance. A huge part of mental fitness is physical fitness. A sparring or running partner is a great way to refresh physical competition. Physical activity accelerates mental motivation. Apologize to yourself and those around you for having a bad attitude. Do this once or twice and you’ll snap out of your funk pretty fast. When you start genuinely apologizing for being a bad influence on those around you, you learn to stop whining and start winning. a Dan Waldschmidt is the author of Edgy Conversations: How Ordinary People Achieve Outrageous Success. Less seeking, more being July’s yoga: Cobra pose Yoga for YOU
by Michelle Ploog Heart openers are an incredible way to stretch the chest, shoulder and abdominal muscles. Cobra pose builds the foundation for other backbends by developing strength in the muscles of the back. When we are not actively present during heart openers, we can compromise the spine by crunching the vertebrae. Much like being present during heart openers on the yoga mat, in our day-to-day lives we must remain present while opening our hearts to others. This is the most effective way to develop deep, authentic bonds — such as the bonds created in my grassroots television series Soul Connection Adventure. Our mission for Soul Connection Adventure is to connect people and celebrate humanity to inspire global change for peace and common good through inspirational, educational reality television programming. This is the process of openhearted love unfolding around our world through celebrating and learning from our differences while embracing our commonalities. By coming together to support television shows, such as Soul Connection Adventure, or documentaries that bring more consciousness and empathy into our world, such as I Am, we are contributing to the bigger possibility for peace. On July 7 we launch our Kickstarter campaign to raise the money necessary to produce this show and bring it to the world. It is through contributors (like you!) who believe in creating peace, love and common good in our world that we are able to share this message to open the hearts of others. Please check out my website for more information on Soul Connection Adventure and to learn how you can support this project becoming a reality. To open your physical heart through cobra, begin by lying on your belly. Press your palms into the ground beside your ribcage. Squeeze your elbows toward each other and roll your shoulders down your back. Press the tops of your feet into your mat. Lift your chest off your mat. Keep the back of your neck long by tucking your chin in gently. Take five breaths, repeating the mantra “My heart loves abundantly.” Release. Namasté. a Michelle Ploog is an ERYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher) certified in Kripalu Yoga and Baptiste Power Yoga that inspires students to live a life of passion and purpose. During her eight years of teaching, she has taught yoga to an array of students from professional athletes, celebrities, women in recovery from sex trafficking, and adolescents coping with depression. She has coached and trained yoga teachers as a facilitator for multiple teacher training programs, featured workshops and immersions around the country. Her intention for teaching is to create a transformational and opening experience for students to embrace their inner light of greatness. www.edgemagazine.net
by Erin D’Ambrosio The motivation for this article comes from my own life experiences, as one person among the many who encounter in vivid clarity the multi-dimensional universe in which we live and aspire to find our calling. Through this process of consciously becoming a “spiritual seeker,” I have encountered many bumps in the road towards enlightenment and feel compelled to share what is now what I considered the most important thing we could ever do in regards to contributing to the shifting process in which we are embodying at this time. It isn’t in the perfect meditation, healing technique, communication with angelic realms or a flying spaceship in the sky. It is found deep inside every single individual, because in every single individual you will find a part of your deepest self, which is non-self or god. To see this in a beautiful vision or enter spontaneous trance is a wonderful and beautiful thing, but to take that into your life and bring it to the earth plane right now is the bridge we must cross at this time, and it is where we bring authentic joy into life. While the sensory aspects of our nature are helpful along our path — and fun to play with or use as learning tools — nirvana is only achieved through touching that timeless peace within our core and sharing that state of consciousness with others. Then, when we open up to vastness of the universe with all of the worlds and dimensions, galaxy upon galaxy and the infinite life forms, we can truly see it as an expression of the magnitude of the miracle in which we dwell. Then, we can take this one step further and realize the miracle actually dwells within us. When I began exploring the experiences I was having as my awakening kundalini led to shamanic journeys of the soul, psychic abilities, vibrational living and energy fields, I was quickly thrust into the community of those who share similar abilities and quickly realized that these traits did not mean one was spiritually realized. In fact, those who claim to be “spiritual” are some of the most deeply wounded individuals I have ever known. I could see that on a deeper level any healer, who does not fully comprehend the illusionary nature of life itself is a healer who needs his or her own healing. I was constantly hitting a wall with everyone I met, encountering judgment and the density of the ego, which triggered my own unconsciousness to react in sadness and confusion. I could clearly see that those with gifts in the areas of the metaphysical or mystical were identifying very closely with themselves as separate from those who had not yet made this transition. This is a dangerous slope, because the healing takes on an outer identity of the constructed game of the mind. This is true of doctors and teachers, as well. All of the knowledge, all of the experience and all of the talent in the world can only heal on the outer level — and while that is at times necessary, it does not get to the core of all distress, which is the chaotic mind. There are then unhealthy structures set in the brain of codependence on healer and patient and roles of you and me, or separate identities. The transition we are making towards an Earth composed of awareness and peace must eventually come to an end, as all transitions do. At some point there will be little or no need for healing and seeking practices, because we will all be in full flow and living purely for the joy of living — and all that we do will be driven by the expression of our uniqueness as a part of the universe and not to achieve something or reach a destination.

This isn’t to say that the portals we use to grow, learn and heal are not useful and should be dismissed. It does mean that one must evolve further, in a way where the ego is no longer dominating the experience of our time on Earth. So, you can continue seeking if you feel that is the action required of you at this time, but by stopping and feeling the miracle of life itself, you bring a depth to your search and begin to rewire your brain into a peaceful teacher of insight and clarity, instead of searching for the next best meditation, channeling or healing. These mediums are all useful instruments, but play with them consciously, with the wisdom that in each moment there is an immovable peace beneath the dancing mind. And know that when you stumble into the pull of anxiety and fear, or when you continually seek out that feeling of belonging somewhere or being someone better than what you are now. Stop — be kind to yourself and remember: Awakening is only discovered when entering each moment, peace by piece. a Erin D’Ambrosio is a local healer whose particular experience has been directly through her own challenges and suffering. A temenos of land, sea offers me healing Itineraries
by Efrén Francisco Solanas P.
At 17, I left my family home, fearless as an immigrant journeying to a place of promise. My escape was enabled by the gift of a four-year, college scholarship. At the time, I wasn’t fully conscious of why I was so eager to depart our small, coastal California town. Nearly forty years later, high in the Andes Mountains, my Q’ero guides advised me to return to my point of origin as the first step on a path of initiation. As we walked the ancient trails, I began to revisit my childhood to ask if there was something I was missing — perhaps a treasure ignored during my excited departure. Transformed into a large bird, I descended slowly through the clouds to view the California coastline, searching carefully the long stretch of land and sea, punctuated by estuaries that interrupt the arid landscape with rich pools of aquatic plants — watery incubators of life. My first realization was that the pain of my childhood loomed largest, distorting an honest view of the landscape. Pain and frustration had permeated my memory, obscuring any blessing. I left home in 1976, slamming the door on the memories of my small town. I was unable to articulate why I was angry until I encountered the richer social milieu of the San Francisco Bay Area. I found my voice and began slowly to speak of the pain endured as a gay youth who was bullied without rescue and the deep resentment regarding the lack of gay role models. Concurrently, I was also profoundly saddened by the destruction of the rural area where I wandered as a boy. The ecosystem was systematically transformed into a metropolis of tract homes and freeways. Ignoring my past was a strategy to avoid the despair and while this appeared effective, it prevented access to the positive. At the concise urging of the Q’ero, I opened the aperture of my mind and asked to see clearly, holistically, the unique qualities that called my soul to incarnate at this specific place. I can nearly recall my entrance into the gentle, southern California ambiance to complete the transfer of my consciousness into physical form. The region is a balmy personality where mesas covered with sage and manzanita descend towards the shore of the Pacific Ocean. Buffcolored, sandstone cliffs complete the journey to the strip of sand that stretches from Baja California to Los Angeles in one glorious sweep. Intermittently, small streams flow from the coastal mountains
and create estuaries before entering the sea. These marshlands are host to migratory birds, as well as species that require the careful mix of fresh and salt water in order to begin life. I grew to manhood at this potent threshold between the arid plateau and rich ocean. My brother and our two best friends freely wandered the hilly wild lands along the lagoons. We constructed tree houses high in the eucalyptus. We’d tunnel underneath the chaparral to build forts and sit protected from the world. For 17 years, I lived balanced in the temenos between land and sea, traversing this symbolic edge of the self and the infinite. This unique costal environment provided me deep sustenance during a difficult childhood. Last November, as I walked in the Andes, I reviewed the contract I had made to enter this site and be forged by the encounter of multiple forces. This American land where I dedicated myself to survival amidst the play of masculine and feminine, water and earth, ancient and modern, God and man. While I tend to the aperture of my memory, I heal the bias of my anger and pain and strive to clearly witness the specific place and players where I chose to incarnate. It is now possible to accept the inherent challenges and gifts. I can embrace the wounding and am sure that I was simultaneously offered the potential for healing. a Efrén Francisco Solanas P. is teacher and practitioner of Senderos de Luz, a combination of powerful multi-dimensional healing modalities. Stellar bodies and our auric field by Jonida Driza
The human being is constantly surrounded by many healing energies that recharge and regenerate not only the body, but also the auric field. The powers of plants, flowers, trees and water provide each person with therapeutic vibrations; in this manner, they all are proven allies to our well-being. But note that stellar bodies also have an impact on the human aura, enhancing its qualities in different ways. In our solar system, the Sun is the star at the center of it all. His energy sustains all life forms: plants, animals and humans. In ancient religions, the Sun was the principal deity, a symbol of benevolence, order, abundance, virtue and higher truth. As a self-sufficient and bright star, the Sun imbues the aura with high amounts of energy, making it more resilient to negativity by helping it raise its vibrations. That’s why on sunny days people tend to be more energetic and with verve, in comparison to when the weather is cloudy, such as on a rainy day. The revitalizing presence of the sun regenerates the auric field and has positive effect on all beings. As the Sun sets, the Moon rises into the sky, filling it with its silvery light. In older traditions, it was connected with the element of water due to its ever-changing and mysterious nature, representing the receptivity of “yin” force. Today, scientific research has shown that, indeed, the lunar energy during its waning and waxing phases has an impact on bodily fluids and hormones; in energy healing, it is known that the Moon’s vibrations affect the emotional body, acting as a healer of deep-seated emotions. Above all, the Moon stirs all emotional currents, bringing to the surface everything that needs to be healed, leading ultimately to inner catharsis and the ability to start anew. This process helps the aura to be cleansed from lower energies resulting from suppressed emotions and fears, thus helping it to regain its balance and strength. Especially during full Moon where its energies are at their peak, this process takes
place in deeper inner levels; that’s why many people feel the effects of it at least three days before the phenomenon happens. In the night sky the stars glisten, filling our imagination with images of mysterious galaxies and unknown worlds. Not only are they beautiful to the eye, but most importantly, their energy is useful to the human aura, for their vibration has an impact on the spinal column and the cerebrospinal fluid, which provides a basic mechanical and immunological protection to the brain inside the skull. In this way, the stellar rays enhance the protective energies inside the spine and the brain, aiding the homeostasis of the organism. The wisdom of the Universe can be found not only in the way everything is made, but in how all its elements interact with each other. The stellar bodies exist for many purposes, one of which is the enhancement of human existence. The warmth of the Sun, the pale light of the Moon, the majestic presence of the stars, all these connect with the aura and help it sustain its energies with unique vibrations and qualities. The sky is filled with healing energies, readily available to every living form that breathes on this planet. All creatures dance under the light of the stellar bodies, and the human aura interacts with them constantly, despite our inability to understand it. So, next time you go for a walk during a sunny day or watch the moon and the stars, know that your energy field has absorbed healing energies vital for its existence. a Jonida Driza is an energy healer, intuitive, author and shaman living in Greece. July horoscope: New energy for self-expression 18th brings support and a sense of grace.
STAR WISDOM
by DK Brainard
July is highly charged as we exit the first chapter of 2014 and transition into a new energy. Jupiter enters Leo on the 16th, amping up our need for self-expression, joy, and personal freedom. And Mars finally ends his challenging seven-month tour of Libra and enters his home sign of Scorpio on the 25th. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Scan through your mental photo album to a time in the past when you felt strong, confident and secure. What was going on at home back then? Can you think of one very small action you could take to recreate some of that energy in your current environment? You need to feel safer in your own skin; start by carving out safe space where you live. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…If it feels like you’re fighting for survival in a work or health matter, you have a right to ask for help. But remember that other people are struggling, too, and they’re probably not as strong as you are. Now might be the time to strike a hard bargain in a key relationship. Before you hold the other person to the fire, be sure you’re both willing and able to give as good as you get. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Money and creativity continue to be the driving forces behind a project of personal reinvention. It’s OK to have needs, you know. It’s even better to commit to changing your personality in order to get those needs met in easier and more fulfilling ways. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…This is make or break astrology. Make a firm commitment to honor yourself, then back it up with your force of Will. You can’t expect others to respect your needs if you’re compromising on your boundaries and ignoring your own needs. Venus’ move into Cancer on the
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…Things start to change for the better once lucky Jupiter enters your sign. You’ve got Jupiter’s blessing for the next year, so don’t be a nervous field mouse. Instead, be like the Lion and conserve energy until opportunity comes within range. Use the fortunate New Moon-Jupiter configuration on the 26th to set your intentions for a year of expansion and abundance. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…The connection between money and your passion continues to beg for your attention. Mary Poppins would be a great role model this month — upright, firm, and efficient, yet also joyful and adventurous. Look for the intersection of purpose and passion — that’s where the money flows. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…You can’t be afraid to push for what you need. There’s a lot of chaos around you and the best thing you can do for your career and your relationship is to get real about what you can and can’t handle. Elegance and diplomacy are great virtues in times of ease; times like these require firmness and strength of character. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…As Mars ends his seven-month transit of your unconscious mind and moves into your sign on the 25th, you’re going to feel your sense of agency returning. Your sphere of influence starts expanding as Jupiter moves into your career house mid-month. And Saturn’s direct turn on the 20th brings back your personal power. Hang in there for three more weeks! Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…Following your bliss and making the money you need might seem mutually exclusive. And this may be true — in the short run. But if you are willing to use your unhappiness with the status quo (a relationship seems to be involved here) as motivation, you can solve this puzzle. You need to get serious enough about your
passion to create — and commit to — a long-term action plan.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)…So many areas of life are demanding your attention, it can be totally overwhelming to the “little you” of your personality. But a higher purpose raises you beyond your personality and into the nearly infinite resourcefulness of your whole Self. Start each day with an affirmation of your purpose and let this commitment pull you through the sea of competing demands. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…A sea-change in your life circumstances is underway, but you’ve got to hang in there for a couple more weeks. Jupiter enters your relationship house on the 16th, opening a year of expanded options in love and business. And, as Saturn goes direct and Mars enters your career house later in the month, opportunity starts to materialize where before there were only walls. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…You don’t like to fight about money (or much else), but you need to be willing to battle for what you need in order to be who you really are. A Pisces without a dream is a limp fish indeed. The opportunity to follow your bliss is right there, but you have to find the guts to seize your chance. Remember that resistant people are only mirroring your own lack of self-belief. a D.K. U.S. embraces Chinese medicine by Changzhen Gong, Ph.D.
The national debate about healthcare is often heated, and it brings up many conflicting opinions. My area of interest is the acceptance and integration of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine into mainstream medical practice in the United States. From my perspective, the trend for medicine in America is steadily moving toward integrative medicine. More and more, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine are being recognized as an effective medical modality, both as an adjunct to Western medicine and as stand-alone therapy for many medical conditions. Examples of acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment include treating side effects of chemotherapy, such as nausea, or increasing the successful implantation rate of in vitro fertilization procedures. The World Health Organization recognizes more than 40 health conditions for which acupuncture and Chinese medicine are effective treatments, including headaches, back and joint pain, sinusitis, insomnia, weight loss and addictions, and many more. A “blended” medicine, which integrates the best of East and West, is taking shape. To support this statement, I will cite a few recently-published reports that provide evidence for this significant paradigm shift in healthcare. The first report is “Integrative Medicine in America: How Integrative Medicine is Being Practiced in Clinical Centers across the United States.” Sponsored by the Minneapolis-based Bravewell Collaborative, this report states that acupuncturists and Chinese medicine practitioners are the most frequently employed practitioners at integrative medicine centers. In addition, acupuncture and Chinese medicine interventions are one of the most frequently prescribed interventions across the spectrum of health conditions. The report concluded that integrative medicine is now an established part of healthcare in the United States. In the 2010 “Complementary and Alternative Medicine Survey of Hospitals,” conducted by the Samueli Institute, 42 percent of the hospitals

surveyed offered complementary and alternative medicine services to patients or employees, and acupuncture was ranked as the second-mostpopular outpatient modality among all complementary and alternative medicine modalities, after chiropractic. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine under the National Institutes of Health has developed a National Health Interview Survey, with the objective of measuring Americans’ use of complementary and alternative medicine. The 2007 survey was released in the report, “The Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the United States.” Twenty-one therapies were listed in the survey, including the Chinese medicine modalities of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, dietary therapy, Tai Chi, and Qigong, all of which are recognized as valid treatment modalities by the National Institutes of Health. Conditions for which complementary and alternative medicine modalities were most frequently used by adults included back pain, neck pain, joint pain and arthritis. Now that scientific research has established the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of these conditions, Western practitioners are increasingly disposed to refer patients for treatment. These three surveys and reports reveal that acupuncture and Chinese medicine as an important component of integrative medicine is positioned for takeoff in the 21st century. The established medical system is adopting this new medicine into U.S. health care services to meet patient demand. a Dr. Changzhen Gong is the president of the American Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM) located in Roseville, Minnesota. An interview with Chrism by Cathryn Taylor Editor’s note: This interview was edited for print. The full interview is available at Edgemagazine. net, and as a free podcast: http://tiny.cc/09dghx
Each of us is intended to be a powerful, physical, intellectual, emotional and intuitive being, but what most of us don’t realize is that our subtle energy system is not complete. Most of us are disconnected from the energetic flow — a transformative energy known as kundalini — that awakens us as whole beings. Chrism (also known as Chris Mitchell), a teacher who helps people learn how to receive and live with this energy rising up from the base of the spine, says awakened kundalini permanently changes body, mind, emotions and spirit. Chrism, who teaches the kundalini and activates those who are ready to receive it, will visit the Twin Cities in late September to lead a Kundalini Awakening Seminar. This teacher says he came into life with a fully awakened kundalini energy and speaks from his authentic experience. Through his many years of interaction with the awakened kundalini, he was guided to live a life of helping and teaching others that they may have a safe, supported and full expression of their own kundalini energy. “Kundalini is an evolutionary energy that is designed for humanity’s next step toward a luminous physical and spiritual expression,” Chrism says. “The kundalini is in everyone. It is an untapped resource of divinity within us all that is waiting to be awakened and experienced. Never has the time been so right and crucial for a change of this magnitude to be explored and initiated.” He spoke with The Edge to share more information about the process of awakening kundalini energy. Most people have heard the word kundalini, but a lot of people don’t understand completely what it is. Please give us an overview of kundalini. Chrism: Kundalini is an energetic force of
consciousness, energy if you will, that rests dormant at the base of a human being’s spine. For most of the population, it rests dormant. For some of the population, it will awaken in their lifetime — and that awakening has very powerful, beautiful and special skills and experiences that accompany it. Kundalini also has a fair amount of challenges to it if, particularly if you do not have the benefit of a teacher or a system to will help you understand what is occur-

Chrism (Chris Mitchell) ring. That is what I do. I help people with their kundalini awakening or activate their kundalini. The kundalini itself is an energetic consciousness that rests at the base of the spine, coiled around the base of our spine three-and-a-half times, and it can be awakened through spiritual practices, breathing practices, near death experiences, accidents, studying with an awakened teacher or just starting meditation. A person can have their kundalini awakened simply because it is time for them. When the fruit is ripe, it is ready to be consumed, and that is the same thing with the kundalini awakening in a person that has really done nothing to invite this. I’ve always considered kundalini to be something that would be awakened or provoked by invitation, by going into meditation. You’re suggesting that it can actually spontaneously emerge. Chrism: Absolutely spontaneous. What would that look like? Chrism: It depends on the individual’s
mental and emotional disposition, but typically it is very beautiful. It is very, very, exciting. It is amazing. Then, depending on the person’s outlook in life and their emotional stability — and whether or not they go into fear with it — it will begin to color the experience. If they start to go into fear, the experience can amplify that fear and it can become very distorted and twisted.
But, if they choose not to go into fear and just go with the beauty, go with the grace, go with the love that is happening, the person will go through a series of spontaneous movements that they won’t understand. They’ll go through a certain level of ecstatic bliss. They’ll be happy for days and weeks and months. There will be this tremendous level of happiness and joy and serenity. And then that will taper off, and then a level of detoxification will occur: emotional detoxification, physical detoxification, karmic detoxification. And, as that detoxification occurs, the person is becoming more in balance and in harmony with this Divine presence within them. This is a Divine presence — make no mistake. This is the end point of all religions. It is the end point of all spiritual study. This is where physical mundane meets non-physical Divine. This is that bridge. …Kundalini is beyond religion. It is the end point. What is required is a level of teaching, which I am trying to produce through these seminars. I am trying to produce kundalini teachers to go out into the population and begin to explain to people that this does not have to be so scary for you. It is important to explain what is going on, that you can put your tongue behind your upper front teeth, and put your fingers in this position, and drink lots of water and stop drinking caffeine. Teachers with this kind of information literally can guide a person away from committing suicide because they have a spontaneous kundalini awakening. What was your journey? I’m sure when you came into this there were not a lot of teachers that were available to you. Chrism: There were no teachers. There
were no books. First of all, I was born with a level of awakening already intact. I need to preface that statement by saying that when you have the kundalini awakened within you, it comes with you after you die. It is there with you along with your memories and your karma. The touch of the Divine never ever leaves the soul that it has touched. The touch of the Divine doesn’t wear off with time. It doesn’t lose its power. It is always the same. It is always strong. I was born into this world with all the symptoms of kundalini awakening as a child without knowing that that’s what the symptoms were. As a child, you can become easily open to this type of thing, because your ego has not matured to the point where everything is set in stone according to how
Kundalini Awakening Seminar with Chrism coming to Twin Cities in late September A Kundalini Awakening Seminar, presented by Kundalini Awakening Systems, will take place September 27-28 in Eagan, MN. It is a natural birthright for all people to experience kundalini, a powerful, transforming energy located at the base of the spine, as it rises in the body and impacts their lives, seminar leader Chrism says. During the seminar, participants will learn how to receive and live with this gift of grace by practicing the Kundalini Awakening Systems’ protocols, “The Safeties,” which are activities to strengthen the physical, emotional, psychological, mental and spiritual aspects of each individual. The seminar will take place at the Best Western Dakota Ridge Hotel, 3450 Washington Ave., Eagan. Registration before July 31 is $279. After July 31, the cost is $297. the ego wants it to be, right? As a child, you just figure this out or see if this feels good or that feels good, and I worked with that and I had a lot of experiences that were positive, but I had a lot more that weren’t so positive. It was very difficult to be transported to the Amazon jungle every night, for years. I didn’t know what a howler monkey was. I just knew that they scared the heck out of me. I didn’t know what these different animals I would come into contact were, and every night this occurred to me until about the age of 13, and then it stopped. Then I was able to have somewhat of a normal junior high and high school experience — until it came back again at the age of 24. Let me go back. When you have the kundalini and it’s come to you into your next expression, your next lifetime, and you’re a child, you go through a level of karmic burning, karmic balancing through the kundalini. So the kundalini that was there in the previous life is guiding you now as a child — and you’re guided to read certain things, you’re guided to experience certain things, your guided to do certain things. I would go out and meditate in the wilderness when I was 9. I would say things like, “Spirits of the Universe, send me a gift,” or something of that nature, and I would always get that gift. I had learned not to talk about it with my parents, because my parents didn’t understand any of this. They were chalking it up to an overactive imagination. I learned to have these blessed little skills without bringing attention to myself, and that was a very big lesson, to not want to be Superman, even though you may have Superman attributes. As this matured within me, my emotional maturity accompanied a healing mentality. I had to know what it is to be sick, as well as what it is to be well. You need to know both sides of the coin. I was shown that through various experiences. When I was 24, it came back because of a visitation from a discarnate entity that
decided to sit down on the edge of my bed and lean over and envelope me in their energy. After that — wow! — the kundalini jumped up and was active in me from then to now. So, this physical body that is forming these words that you are hearing right now had to go through its own awakening, just like my body did in its previous life. At the age of 30, I had the primary spinal sweep, which is when the kundalini awakens from the base of the spine, travels up the spine and goes out the fontanel of the person, showering down as light around the person. This puts the physical body into various automatic positions of grace and reception and bliss and ecstasy — all of these really, really beautiful, beautiful experiences. After that, I had to relearn what kundalini was. Because there were no teachers, I had to figure this out on my own — and I did. I was in the corporate world, on my way to becoming a manager at MCA (Music Corporation of America) at the time. I was working the corporate ladder there, but after the kundalini came, everything stopped in the mundane world for me. I had to learn why I was experiencing what I was experiencing. I knew I had to figure it out and I knew that it was not going to go well if I stayed in the corporate world. This was going to be a very difficult scenario. It was already getting difficult. I became homeless for the next 10 years or more, trying to figure this out. I had medical experience, so I knew that it was not a medical problem, but I also knew that my Subjective Objective Assessment Prognosis (my medical chart) was not looking very good. From my own deductive reasoning, I knew that I couldn’t take it to a counselor or a psychologist, psychiatrist, MD or anybody, because they were just going to push Prozac-oriented chemicals and medications at me and label me with schizophrenia with positive expressions of bipolarism and things of that nature, which was absolutely untrue. But kundalini can bring that about,
so I can’t fault the medical people for making that diagnosis. People will exhibit some of the phenomena that those that have those illnesses will exhibit, and so it’s an easy mistake to make. So I didn’t do that. How did you find your path from being homeless to being a teacher? Chrism: I didn’t find that path. That path
found me. I wasn’t looking to be a teacher. I could see that kundalini will push you into selfless service for other people, and I learned, through trial and error, that you don’t resist the kundalini. When it wants to push you in a certain way, you answer that push with, “Yes, OK, absolutely, here we go.” And that’s what I did. I started a Yahoo group that grew exponentially very quickly, and the kundalini started doing its teachings through that group. Now we have seven or eight communities, and we have members from all over the world, thousands of people. I have created a site [kundaliniawakeningsystems1. com] where the writings that came through the kundalini pretty much speak for themselves. Read those writings and you will feel the kundalini. Then we created 300 YouTube videos [search Chrism Kundalini at YouTube.com]. You know, everybody and their uncle now seem to feel that they are a kundalini awakened teacher or master, and a famous author will say, “Well, I wrote a really good book and so I must have kundalini, right?” That is absolutely not true. If someone wanted to work with you, what does he or she need to do? Chrism: They need to read the writings.
They need to begin practicing the safety protocols for kundalini awakening. Then we will meet over Skype if they are living a long ways away or we’ll meet in person. I’ll begin to work with them on an individual basis about where they need to go, how they need to get there, what they need to do, and what process is going to happen for them. And that is a huge blessing, because when you have no instruction and this type of stuff happens to you, to say that it makes you think you’re crazy is putting it very lightly. Tell me about the safety protocols for kundalini awakening that you developed. Chrism: In my second seminar, which took
place in 2006 in Santa Cruz, California, I gave a person active Shakti Pad. Shakti Pad means activating someone’s kundalini by using the kundalini that flows through me. I gave this individual Shakti Pad, but I had certain questions about it for myself. I thought, “I don’t know about this.” The kundalini allowed me to go ahead and do it anyway, but the individual had seven red welts along his spine over the nerve plexi Kundalini continued on page 18 July 2014 the edge

Kundalini continued from page 17 centers or chakra centers. I thought, “Oh, no, this is horrible.” The first rule in healing is do no harm — you never hurt. I was very upset about the red welts, but they went down immediately. His Shakti Pad remained — and it caused him to go a little over the edge about control issues and maybe issues about self-validation and things of that nature. I was able to work with him and get those things straightened out. But after that, I just sat down in meditation and had a little conversation with my kundalini. “Look, I don’t want to hurt anybody. I don’t want anybody to come into this without information.” And the kundalini proceeded to download the safeties into my head. I took practical practices from almost every culture in this world, including the shamanic, and condensed it into one great teaching, one great practice, that a person can do every day. This is what I teach, and this will save a person from going crazy in the kundalini. If they practice the safeties, they should do very well. Are these safety protocols available in your videos and writings, or do you need to access them at your workshops? Chrism: They are part of the workshop,
because they are a stand-alone activation equation. You can just do the safeties and begin to activate your kundalini. So, of course, at the seminar I teach the safeties. But, I also give a huge amount of information about the kundalini: what it is, how it is, how you are within it, how it is in you, how the environment begins to respond with you differently, how your environment and your awareness of what is real begins to expand, how to deal with that expansion and whatever life forms and consciousness exist beyond the narrow focus of a five-sense human being, and what happens when your eyes are opened into the infinite, what happens then and how do you deal with that? We talk about all of those scenarios, and I answer questions at the seminar. I take questions immediately when anyone has one for me. I want people to ask questions that are near and dear to their hearts so they don’t leave with unanswered concerns. As soon as a person comes in to the seminar, they are wrapped in my kundalini immediately. I don’t have to say a word. The process begins to evaluate that person’s level of awareness for kundalini and what is best for them to do and to experience as they begin seeking more information or actually seeking the activation itself. On my website — kundaliniawakeningsystems1.com — on the menu on the left side, the fifth item down is a link called The Safeties. Print them out. I invite everyone to

read them at least three times and begin to practice them. You’ll notice that there are levels of vertical yoga, which is what draws energy from the lower part of the body straight up the spine. This is the path that we want the kundalini to go, straight up the spine. What have you witnessed during the integration process when people start to awaken and become more familiar with the kundalini? And how does that impact their day-to-day lives? Chrism: The interesting thing is, I’ve seen
that happen right there at the seminar. I give the Shakti Pad and boom, they have it — and all of a sudden the paradigm has shifted for them, from, “Oh, gosh, I just came to this seminar because it sounded really cool, you know, and, jeez, I didn’t think any of it was real!” I didn’t think this was going to happen! Chrism: I’ve had people just fall into tears
and ask for it to be mitigated — and, of course, I can mitigate that. When your kundalini is awakened, it is a real change in your reality. It’s beautiful, but you have to realize it is a change — and you don’t want to resist the changes that are coming. In the normal day-to-day life, all of a sudden you feel more, you see more, you experience more, your sensorial pickup is extremely elevated. Your strength and your endurance can be extremely elevated, and conversely, you can have all your energy. It feels like it’s just being sucked away and replaced with something different — sometimes that’s a little confusing for people to keep aware of. There are many different levels of kundalini expression that happen for a person when they are new to the activation. Much of the kundalini itself is about acclimating yourself to the new person you are becoming through the kundalini. As that acclimation occurs, you become stronger and stronger and stronger and far better able to live a life of an awakened saint inside of a society that does not recognize awakened saints. It sounds like a real surrendering process. Chrism: Extremely so — yes, surrendering
and tolerating and changing your inner dogma to that of honesty, truth, compassion, forgiveness, all the noble qualities that lead one into enlightenment. Let’s talk a little bit about the kundalini awakening workshop that you’re going to lead in the Twin Cities in September. Chrism: I’ll be doing the seminar, and I’ll
be doing some speaking engagements the week before the seminar throughout the Twin Cities. Come to one of those speaking engagements and see what it’s like. See how
it feels. On the podcast of this interview, feel the kundalini in the voice, feel the voice reaching into you and see if it works. Just see if this is calling to you, and if it is calling to you, then answer that call. I’m on Facebook at Chris Mitchell Chrism Kundalini, and on Facebook at Kundalini Awakening or Kundalini Awakening Systems 2. We have a Yahoo.org group called Kundalini Awakening Systems 1, and a YouTube page at Chris Mitchell Kundalini or Chrism. If you have any question about me or how I teach or how I am, just watch the videos in the comfort of your own home. …I tend to slant things a little more to the beauty, because things have been slanted to the terrifying far too much. Do you have any final thoughts for our readers? Chrism: Kundalini is the source of the force.
If you watch Star Wars, then you know, “Let the Force be With You,” and all that. Kundalini is that force. Kundalini is that inner frequency of relationship between the Divine and the physical mundane. For those of you that listen to the podcast of this interview, feel the energy of the kundalini coming through this voice into your spiritual equation. Feel it. Let it resonate with you. Taste it like a fine wine and see what happens with you in regards to your dreams, your feelings about love and life and balance and why it is you are here, what reason, why are you here, what’s going on with you in that area, and then come to this seminar. Come and meet me. Meet Rosemary. There will be more kundalini-awakened people there than you will ever come across in one room, because I get a lot of neat people who come to my events. Really begin to open yourself to this idea. Forget about what you read from negative websites. You get a lot of people lying about kundalini syndrome, lying about this, lying about that, trying to stroke people’s fears instead of stroking their joy. Be very aware that there is a concentrated effort to distort the information about kundalini. Don’t believe it. It is the hand of the Divine in your heart. It is a beautiful, compassionate lesson. a

ODE TO RIDDICK, ONE OF A KIND by Melissa Norton On May 18, Truhaven Ranch lost one of its very first rescued equines, a horse named Riddick. Everyone who has been to the ranch can tell you their own special Riddick story. They range from “I can’t get him out of his stall — he’s acting crazy” to “Riddick just stole my hat right off my head.” He was always afraid of leaving the farm, so he acted a little nutty (well, downright crazy, sometimes) if he didn’t know you. Once he did, the pranks began. Riddick was a mixture of a joker and life-lesson teacher. He touched the heart of everyone who met him. My own father (who is not a horse person) absolutely loved his personality. He said, “Every horse should be as cool as you.” Riddick responded by wiping his mouth slobber off on my dad’s shoulder. Riddick’s love for adventure and life taught me how to be a more confident rider and how to believe in myself. (I had to pass a lot of special Riddick tests along the way.) He was so grateful for his second chance at life. He had a lot of issues stemming from the abuse he lived through, but even in his darkest moments he never lost hope or gave up on people. Most importantly, he never lost his sense of humor. On his last day of life, he trained Sarah and me to hand pick grass from the spots he chose. He wouldn’t accept any grass with dirt or roots still attached. This made Sarah and me laugh through our sadness. He also was strong willed and gave me the ride he promised all winter, delayed because he had been too sick. We just walked around the driveway instead of galloping and playing in the pasture like we had planned. The other day when I rode Picasso down in the pasture, he started hopping and jumping in place, acting just like Riddick used to when we played together. I can’t help but think that Riddick is still here and he gave me that ride he owed me in the pasture through Picasso.
Riddick’s story is an example of why we do what we do at Truhaven. Our mission is to educate people, and to help give unwanted and abused equines a second chance at life. Sometimes we cannot undo all the horror and evil things that people have done to animals. Riddick was one of those animals who was mentally scarred by his past, but we gave him a forever home and he was grateful to us. He thanked us every day and left his mark on every soul he met in his short time here. Riddick is missed very much here at the ranch. We have decided to call his favorite obstacle on the course “Riddick’s Ridge,” in honor of one of the greatest rescues Truhaven has ever had the privilege of knowing and loving. a Melissa Norton is the barn manager and trainer at Truhaven Ranch, an equine rescue and rehabilitation center. HEINTZ by Rev. Richard W. Curney
Heintz, as his name implied, was a dog of varied ancestry. He was calicocolored and looked like a collie when he didn’t look like a mutt. Heintz loved sunsets. He would sit motionless and alert as he watched the big golden ball slowly fall down the sky past our neighbor’s stand of pine trees. We lived on five acres atop a windy knoll outside of Stillwater, MN. Heintz had charge of not only guiding the sun to the horizon, but also keeping small animals away from my father’s extensive vegetable gardens. He was a gentle dog, but fast. Jackrabbits got a good cardio workout if Heintz saw them too close to the carrots. I’m not sure that he knew he was a dog. He’d eat anything. If we put carrots in his bowl, he’d eat them. If we put the leftovers from the previous night’s family meal in his breakfast bowl, they would always disappear. He even entertained the virtues of a tossed salad if beef broth joined the ingredients. We never knew how old he was. He wandered into the yard as a maybe 5-year-old sojourner and thankfully received a meal. He seemed right at home, but was given every chance to retrace the steps that brought him collarless into our yard. We checked with all the neighboring hobby farms, but no one had an inkling of his history. There was always a sadness in his eyes. He could hold a human gaze as well as most humans, but behind it he housed a pain that time never took away. He was a natural gardener. Mounds of dirt had to be shaped to serve as a home for watermelon seeds and buttercup squash seeds.. Heintz got it. He helped paw dirt back through his hind legs to perfect the mounds. He would wile away long summer afternoons dozing in the tomato bed when his duties as sentinel were not required. His forte, however, was guiding that big bright ball down to its evening’s rest. I stood with him many times and rubbed his ears while I shared his sacred silent task. When I think back, I wonder if he was secretly hoping for the day when the big gold ball would reach the tree tops and bounce. He would have tried to chase it down. a Rev. Richard W. Curney has been the Rector of Saint Francis Liberal Catholic Church in Minneapolis since 1989. He publishes “Prof. Asabov Soblo’s E = MC2 Update” and “Morning Haiku” online. He is the author of Screaming Like Giants and numerous poems. Copyright © 2014. All Rights Reserved.

Merlyn as a younger cat in a flower garden. (Inset): Merlyn on Yoda’s grave.
MERLYN THE MAGICAL CAT: MY MYSTICAL CONNECTION by Lori Buss
For years, it seemed that Merlyn was on the side. Although she was picked first, I connected deeply and immediately with her brother, Yoda. Yoda transitioned when we lived in the haunted house, less than a month before their 11th birthday. Merlyn and I kept vigil in the neighbor’s backyard as he struggled, trying to remain in his body underneath the upturned row boat supported by sawhorses. At one point, Mer grabbed Yode by the scruff and tried to pull him out from under the boat. Unable to budge him, she sat sentry on the corner of the vessel’s bottom while Yoda writhed on the ground below. After he was buried, Merlyn sat on his gravestone, next to the catnip I’d planted. She must have regretted tipping me off that her brother was earthbound. Every time I tried to send him to the light, she scolded me and he refused to go. When a friend finally came over to do the job, Mer hid under the bed, knowing that Caroline required ALL embodied beings to be out of the house while she worked. We forced the cat out and closed the pet door. When it was all over and my husband and I returned home, our pet was nowhere to be found. Hurt, outraged and griefstricken, she stayed out until the wee hours of the morning, even though the rule was
that she must be inside before dusk. A few months later, we moved to the mountains. Once, as I sunned myself in a lounge chair, Merlyn complained loudly at my side. “Do you want some food?” I asked her. I rose to go inside, and she promptly jumped onto the chair to lie down. When I divorced, I rented another haunted house. Merlyn assisted me as I performed the ghost-removal protocol. I couldn’t see the ghost, but my furry friend was acutely clairvoyant. When the spirit tried to escape my efforts by fleeing to a bedroom, Mer showed me where it went, so I could complete the job. For the next few years, I was very isolated. I experienced pronounced spiritual expansion and I put a lot of effort into discovering who I was becoming. Ever loyal, Merlyn offered me companionship, guidance and, in the loneliest of times, a reason to keep going. As my psychic sensitivity increased, we became more deeply entwined. Once, as I prepared to go to work, I was struck by a wave of nausea. As soon as my cat vomited, I felt fine. We were together for 17-and-a-half years. The last two years were difficult for us both. Out of necessity, we moved from Colorado to the Twin Cities to Amarillo and back again. Mer hated traveling, and the road trips were hard on her. Two nights before she died, I took her skin and bones to an animal emergency clinic and demanded that my companion be given subcutaneous fluid. The doctor recommended she be put down then and there, but I couldn’t let her go so suddenly.
MY ‘LITTLE LADY,’ A SPECIAL KITTEN by Lena Swanson
When a cat suddenly starts showing up in my neighborhood, it can be quite confusing. Does it belong to one of the neighbors? Was it abandoned? Is it lost? Is it a feral cat, born outside and considered wild? Most domestic cats who do end up living outside for whatever reason often seem wild or feral. Their behaviors mimic the wild ones as a way of coping with their new environment. Over the past several years I have been faced with this situation many times, most likely because I am a professional animal communicator and they’re attracted to my energy. Cats and kittens show up in my neighborhood and I begin the rescue process: feeding on a consistent basis, befriending when possible, live trapping when necessary, taming, getting proper medical attention and finding homes. Alas, I admit to being a foster failure more than once! A year ago in January, I noticed that a kitty had begun to use my heated feral cat house. I get very emotional from the thought of cats living outdoors during Minnesota winters, so the heated cat sanctuary gives me the peace of mind that there is at least one place safe and warm if anyone needs it. I had no idea that the cat I was feeding for much of the winter was actually a kitten! As spring approached, she started sticking around more and staring at me. At times when she was really hungry, she would even run toward me when I went out with her food. I saw how small she was and noticed that she seemed to want to be friendly but just couldn’t muster the courage. I started calling her “Little Lady,” so at least she would have a temporary name. Since she seemed somewhat tame, I began feeding her in a very large plastic dog crate. It kept the food dry in the rain and she started to feel comfortable going in to eat. She still kept her distance, but I could tell she was starting to like me. Then one day after making the necessary arrangements for spaying at one of my favorites vets, I gave her a nice meal of tuna — and when she went in to eat I simply closed the dog crate The following night, she purred as I sat on the floor, gently stroking her underside. Overtaken by sleepiness, I got into bed. Mer climbed up the cardboard box stairway I’d made for her, intending to lie beside me. She’d never liked snuggling too closely, and when I rolled over to touch her, she jumped off the bed, fell on her face and broke a fang. I buried Merlyn in the woods behind my sister’s house, along with a furry toy mouse, some raw hamburger, and her catnip carrot. The funeral was quick and I was unable to mark her grave with catnip. I felt unsettled about her burial for several months.
door. Voila, another rescue! After some communication, it turned out she was not wild at all but had been in a household and then abandoned mid-winter. Unfortunately, I do not have a great track record in fostering and rehoming the animals I rescue. Most of the time I end up keeping them, because I have the crazy feeling that no one else will take such good care of them. Also, the rescuing and nurturing process is so bonding that it’s hard for me to let them go. Little Lady did find her forever home last summer with a wonderful retired woman and a kitty brother. I laugh when I think about my initial fears that she was wild and might be difficult to tame. She was simply a treasure looking for her people and for once her person wasn’t me! Little Lady taught me many things in the months I fostered her. Most of all, she taught me once again to not judge a book by its cover and to be patient with the flow of life. To let go when necessary. It took a long time for us to find her perfect home, but the wait was well worth it! And for once I wasn’t a foster failure! a Lena Swanson is a professional animal communicator, psychic, shamanic healer, past life regression facilitator and Reiki master. Sometimes, big, powerful spirits come in small packages. Since she left a year-and-a-half ago, I’ve felt Merlyn’s presence and communicated with her many times. This spring, I visited her gravesite and noticed a familiar member of the mint family growing there. In collaboration with God, my sweet and magical cat planted catnip on her own grave, to send me a sign that she loves me, and all is well. a Lori Buss is a Twin Cities astrologer. AN ELEPHANT’S LOVE by Rosanne Brekken
I leaned in, gently touched my forehead to hers, and in a soft tone, said, “I love you Anusa.” My heart poured forth a loving energy that radiated from my soul. Anusa responded with a low rumble and the vibration pulsed through me. I glanced over at Primal, a Mahout, who broke into a huge smile and replied, “She’s happy!” I felt total elation! I’ve adored animals since I was a child growing up on a farm in North Dakota. The idea of befriending an elephant on the other side of the world was not something I ever imagined was possible. Communicating and bonding so closely with such a majestic being was a profound experience — simply indescribable. I spent two weeks in Sri Lanka volunteering with elephants and performing various daily tasks related to their care. I visited a second elephant orphanage on my free time, and it was there that I connected with Anusa, a 45-year-old Asian elephant. I was not a tourist. I spoke to her respectfully and asked permission to enter her personal space, requesting to spend time together. I even surprised Anusa one day with her favorite food. Pineapple! Not once did I feel fear being so close to these large animals. Why would I be afraid of these gentle, sensitive souls who could hear my thoughts, feel my energy and gauge my good intentions? On my final day with the elephants, a
strong sadness enveloped me. The time shared with them was a precious gift. I didn’t want to leave them. Suddenly, I sensed the presence of my mother, who passed away three years ago. I lowered my head and cried, missing my mom and telling Anusa, my animal soul mate, how much I would miss her, too. When I looked up, to my amazement, a tear fell from Anusa’s eye. Was she an orphan who had lost her mother, too? Was she going to miss me? Elephants are known to be supremely intelligent and emotional. I didn’t need proof of that to convince me, but Anusa showed me anyway. The depth of her love and wisdom was evident. Although her given name was Anusha — meaning “beautiful morning star” in Sanskrit, I misheard the pronunciation and always called her Anusa, which became my special name for her. In Sanskrit, the name Anusa also has a special significance. It means to follow one’s desires. Isn’t that what we are now called to do?
HOLLY & ME: AS IT WAS INTENDED by Rachel Augusta
Holly came into my life 15 years ago while I was still living in Hollywood, California. I rescued this 4-year-old cat from a girl who was throwing her out because she chose an apartment that didn’t accept pets. At the time, I was going through a very rough breakup and my heart was smashed to pieces. Holly was exactly what I needed. Holly is the very first cat I’ve had as an indoor companion, and it took a few days for us to get to know one another and how things worked. We sat and painted watercolors together — well, I would paint and Holly would bat at my brush while I cleaned it in the water bowl. We became fast friends. One night while we were snuggling in bed I said, “It’s going to just be you and me, kid.” I had no idea that my words were going to ring true. Through all of the changes in my life during these past 15 years, the one thing that has remained constant is Holly. Holly has traveled through more states than most people I know, and she has walked down each path with me as a constant friend and confidant. She also makes an excellent travel companion — as long as she can look out the window! This year, it occurred to me that Holly is truly my soul mate, and I know that we have spent many lives together. Once this realization came to me, I delved deeper and learned that Holly hasn’t always been a cat; she’s also lived as a human.

Anusa also sounds similar to Ahimsa, the Hindu practice I embrace of doing no harm to any living thing. That fits beautifully, because the elephants need us. I want to be a voice for them and encourage people to keep them in their hearts. Elephants are being ruthlessly slain for their ivory tusks and killed for eating farmers’ crops when their habitat has been destroyed and there is no other food for them. Some elephants are chained and kept separated from each other, when they desperately need physical contact and connection within a social system. Fortunately, wonderful organizations are working to alleviate and end this type of life for them — but we can do more. Please send them love and support, in whatever manner you feel called. I hope to return to Sri Lanka one day to see Anusa again. My new friend touched and opened my heart to a whole new level. She is an anchor for my soul to hold onto when the currents of life try to pull me off course. I often speak with her telepathically to maintain our connection, and because it brings me joy. After all, love is love, and love never dies. Especially with an elephant. They have long memories and she won’t forget me. As I will never forget her. a Rosanne Brekken has been on her spiritual and holistic health journey for many years. A few weeks ago, while she slept in my arms, I realized that Holly’s mission in this life is to show me love — pure and unadulterated love — and she has done that well. In the 15 years I’ve spent with her, I’ve come to know her better than I have known anyone else. I know when she’s happy, sad, angry or scared. I’ve also come to perfectly understand her words. We have a special bond, and I’m so grateful the universe delivered her into my arms. I love her more than anyone else in the world. Holly is turning 19 this month, and because I wanted to give her the best life possible, I became a licensed practitioner in Healing Touch for Animals, knowing that I could help assist her with her aging process and give her wellness treatments to keep her feeling good. So I also have her to thank for leading me to this wonderful new career change. Now that I realize Holly’s job in this life was to be the one to show me true love, I have a much better understanding as to why she’s never let me bring another adopted companion into the house; it isn’t just that she’s a territorial alpha cat, but having someone else around would have taken away from her mission. So until it isn’t, right now it’s just Holly and me — and that’s exactly what was intended. a Rachel Augusta is a licensed and insured Healing Touch for Animals practitioner and a member of the Animal Communicators Coalition for Animal Welfare. SOPHIE’S STORY By Lynn Savage Author’s Note: Everything in this article is completely true. If anything, I have held back on some of the mystical details. My concern is that it may stretch credibility for some readers, but this article portrays a reality that we live with each day. It could be that more souls are choosing to incarnate as pets for special missions. Perhaps other pet owners that suspect something special is going on with their pet will be encouraged to come forward and speak out. Sophie came into our lives during the summer of 2009. A rescue agency had obtained the inventory of a notorious puppy mill in Missouri, and Sophie had bounced through two different adoptive homes in the course of a few weeks. It didn’t take long to realize that Sophie is much more than a little dog. Mystical events began when Marie’s cat, MS Bun, telepathically alerted her that she needed to look at a rescue dog on craigslist. When Sophie’s picture appeared on the screen, Bun tapped the monitor with her paw and meowed. The little Shih Tzu we brought home was bedraggled and matted. She was still recovering from spaying surgery, and had no idea what it meant to live in a home. The rescue agency had dubbed her “Bubbles,” but her first order of business was to tell Marie (telepathically) that her name was Sophie. We started her on a routine of bathing and grooming, which she absolutely loves, and it became clear that she enjoys cultivating the glamorous diva persona and soliciting compliments. Marie is a talented animal communicator, but Sophie tends to bend her telepathic ears far more than the average pet. Sophie revealed that she incarnated with the intent to help us in our life path, but it took six long years in the puppy mill to line up circumstances so she could find us. She also revealed that an invisible “friend” accompanies her on her mission, which we take to be a guide or angel, although she declines to reveal much more about this. I sense that Sophie is well protected by her guide. Sophie’s typical communication focuses on her schedule (grooming appointments or upcoming Earth & Water Wellness events). She claims to have an online scheduler and can somehow access the Internet. She frequently tells Marie to look at a certain website to find something, and sure enough it will be there. She knows when products she is interested in are on sale and at which store. When Sophie’s groomer announced wedding plans, Sophie obsessed for days about how she would be able to get in for grooming at that time, even though the wedding date was many months away. Sophie’s repertoire of tricks includes the ability to move objects. Her nightly routine consists of moving several items from the bedroom dresser to the bed, under the covers. My nightly routine is to check under the covers and move the items back. Typically this includes a box of stones, shoes, loose change, pictures, or tools.
Occasionally she has done a tarot spread on the bed, using cards from a deck that was put away and forgotten. We never actually see the objects move, and Sophie lies quietly at the foot of the bed the entire time. The objects move when we are out of the room. Occasionally she will pull a blanket or drape socks over herself when going to bed, and Marie has walked in to see the blanket or socks being levitated. Our best guess is that Sophie is utilizing some sort of psychokinetic ability. Sophie also moves magazines, books and newspaper ads to my office chair. She is particularly fond of pizza coupons, which she attributes to a past life as a human. In fact, she left the current Edge magazine on my chair several times over the past week to remind me to write this article. Again, I never actually see the objects move, and she is certainly too small to physically move them. Sometimes the objects would have had to move through closed doors or walls, and it occurs when no one is around to observe it. Sophie wants her friends to know that in her past life as a female human, she ran an occult bookstore (as they were known back then), so she is well versed in metaphysics. She came back as a dog this time to play a unique role in helping Marie and me with whatever we are supposed to accomplish during this great time of shifting. She has a great deal of compassion for her fellow fur babies, and tries to help with their healing. She considers herself part of Marie’s metaphysical practice, and often she helps clients by traveling into the astral plane. Sophie also wants to add that major changes are in store for the planet later in 2014, so get ready! She obviously knows a great deal more than she is telling, but perhaps that will be changing. I get the feeling that she soon will be ready to speak out more. She wants to help others navigate the Shift. Meanwhile, Sophie enjoys life with us. She absolutely adores outings in her pet stroller, along the many fine trails in the Twin Cities area. She loves to run and sniff at the park. For this little dog, life is good! a Lynn Savage is an industrial automation programmer. words of wisdom by Nadine Penny
Paul Tillich said, “The first duty of love is to listen!” So, embrace the healing power of listening this July as you create a sacred space for family, friends and colleagues to share their story (whether uplifting or gut-wrenching) and feel heard and understood — heart, mind and soul. How do you do this? Use affirming body language — nod, smile and make eye contact — promptly with helpful questions or an encouraging “a-ha,” and utilize empathic statements such as, “It sounds like it’s been a (wonderful/painful) experience for you,” to reflect back what has been said. Your listening is a gift of time, compassion and understanding that will bond you, promote your friendship and teach you that the greatest fix is to listen! a Nadine Penny attained her M.A. from the University of Denver in Counseling Psychology.
