Quite some time ago I traveled solo by bus and train across England to a retreat center, a bed-and-breakfast, in Glastonbury. Arriving at the same time was a group of guests who had signed up for a crystal and meditation workshop.

One morning, a few of us were sitting around the kitchen table when one of the guys picked up a switcher and said the TV can be a spiritual experience. In the same vein as picking random paragraphs to read from a shelf of books, he told me that he often made amazing discoveries by randomly switching channels and discovering what happened to come out of the television.

He spoke the truth, for our external world is quite prepared to astonish us if we give it a chance.

Surprising insights For as much as I decry a lot of what is on the tube, I am constantly discovering new and surprising insights while watching people in relationship with each other, and some shows really know how to tug at the heartstrings. Some astound you when you least expect it.

The other day, I was watching “The Voice,” NBC’s singing competition, which just concluded its fourth season. Usher — one of four star judges — found himself with only one contestant left on his team after elimination rounds: Michelle Chamuel, a short young woman with a distinctive voice, a body that never stops moving and a trademark lunge when she is hitting the big notes. Her large, blackframed glasses endeared her to her fans.

What she proved as the second-place finisher this season was her ability to touch the soul with her voice. Certainly not a favorite early on in the competition, Michelle proved increasingly each week

that she was something special.

Then, during a routine comment after one of her performances, her coach Usher said NBC this: “The standard changes every time someone steps out and does something different.”

That spoke to me.

I thought about the 7 billion people living together on this blue marble of a planet, how interconnected we all are, and how one of us can change the vibration for all of us when we choose to be who we truly are.

Brutal honesty Authenticity is a current catchphrase, but it’s not just a synonym for honesty. It’s brutal honesty down to the soul, about who we are and what we feel. No more going through the motions. No more doing something while knowing it holds no spark of aliveness for us. No more white lies or deception, especially if you’re the only one who knows.

Usher’s sentiments towards Michelle reminded me that there is no greater act of bravery than stepping out and expressing our soul to the world.

How would the world be different if every human being was authentic, 100 percent of the time? Would we even recognize where we were? Or would it seem like a science fiction story in which idealism becomes the norm, and when the TV is turned off, our reality pales in comparison?

No progress is possible by celebrating the differences between us

This penchant for human beings to discover how unalike they are, how distinct they are — it all has to do with ego. We have now managed to “create” how different we all are. And in that difference comes disharmony. Where we need to put the energy now is in how similar we are, how much we all have that is similar that can be shared. How alike we all are, in terms of joy and pain and suffering and elation. And we need to share that information now.

There is no progress to be made by celebrating our differences. We’ve done that.

We are now in a state of critical mass. We are so isolated, with our various distinct individualities, that we can wreak havoc on someone else and hope or think that we gain from it. I’m talking about terrorism; I’m talking about hate crimes… anything of that ilk. That somehow if we are able to eliminate a reflection of ourselves, we are going to become more whole.

It’s a very twisted viewpoint.

So that’s what we need to recognize, that we are all, in an umbilical sense, connected to the same force. Like reconnecting strings. Because we’ve lost that connection, that understanding that each individual’s greatness is relied upon by the other person’s greatness, by recognizing their greatness, not their inability. What this simply comes down to is to recognize that every creature has greatness inherent in them.

And the suffering of one is the suffering of all mankind.

There is a way for everyone to be joyful and not to be dependent upon what I refer to as relative happiness. That happiness has to do with whether or not you have more or less than another individual in terms of material goods, attractiveness, or all those strata that have been created. It’s a very destructive energy, relative happiness. The absolute happiness that comes from within, that’s eternal. It isn’t at the expense of everyone else. When people allow themselves to re-experience that, they recognize the joy that’s in all.

In many people’s illusion, prosperity is what’s going to allow them to finance happiness somewhere. That’s what prosperity means to them. “Now I can be happy, because now I can buy the house that’s going to bring me happiness.” I know many lonely people with very big houses.

Let’s instead talk about experiencing joy. We were put on this planet to experience joy. To understand the beauty, the depth, the excitement of the life experience. To thoroughly embody it, to become joyful in it, and by doing so, become compassionate with other people. Bottom line.

The trouble is that we’re looking in the wrong places for what we think is joy, and we’ve bought into other concepts in which we think joy is experienced. Or we distrust the joy we’re experiencing as not being valid and not being of social worth. So the bottom line here is: joy is something that exists, can happen within you, and can be a part of the light in every second of your being if you choose to live that way. And when you experience it, everything else will be taken care of. You do not have to worry.

You must allow yourself to trust your life force and not second-guess it. Trust your instinct. It is a sum total of your entire existence. It is a vast library of information. We blind ourselves to it when we shut down our access to our library.

It’s incorporating all of that existence, all that work, into this single moment in time. And breathing through it and allowing that to funnel through to create the kind of force that will alter existence…that will change lives. a

REAL PLACE DREAM

by Tim Hulst I dream of a real place where kindness is universal and completely taken for granted, a real place where saying or doing anything hurtful to another soul is unthinkable and shocking, a real place where serving and sacrifice is natural, a real place in my lifetime, without locks, barbed wire, violence or war, a world of peace and love, of tolerance and respect, of appreciation and gratitude, where selfish gain is never considered, where the only agenda, angle or aim is love, a real place of beautiful souls wholly dedicated to creating beauty.

I have seen this real place and been to this place and danced in its streets and run through its fields and smelled its flowers and felt its cool wind and warm sun on my face and swam in its oceans. I have been there many times and so have you — every time we choose good over evil and love over self-interest and peace over conflict.

But we come and go. We flash in and out, in and out, in and out. As we teach and train ourselves, we return quicker and stay longer, expanding its borders and plowing its fields and planting its beds and building up shelters and opening wide its doors until every soul is in. a Tim Hulst is a seeker of wisdom and truth. Self-love leads us into tomorrow

by Rachel Stewart, Ph.D. For years, many people talked about the year 2012. Some people talked from a fear-based perspective, while others talked of opportunities for transformation in order to assist the planet in its evolution.

I cannot speak to what others say as truth or speculation, but I can share what I am noticing as we journey through 2013 and forward.

Over the last few decades, we have been in the midst of a major shift in consciousness. Rather than continuing to shift from the outside in, we have been called to shift from the inside out.

What does that mean? It means that in our recent history, our focus has been on the external world. We have focused our energy on creating our material world with perfect bodies, bigger houses, fancier cars, exquisite vacations, etc. As we have refined our skills at manifesting in the material world, we also have lost something of great value. We lost the connection between our hearts and our heads and from each other.

We have disconnected from our true selves and, as a result, we have lost our sense of community.

Currently, there is more of a focus on healthier lifestyles with more exercise and diet through things such as yoga, Pilates, meditation, kale smoothies, etc. But is that what we are really being called toward?

More kale? As I do believe that kale, along with many other sources of nutrition and exercise, are good for us, there is an important aspect that is being brought forward -- and that is the value of nurturing our souls. I believe we are being called to a higher truth where the focus is shifting from the external world to the internal.

We have been learning that we create our realities from the inside out and now this shift is helping us reconnect to our true power that lies within us through selflove.

As Carl Jung said, “The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely.” That is what we are being called to do now. It is time to accept all the parts of ourselves that we deny because we are ashamed, all the parts of ourselves that we ignore because we do not see the value in “being the best for the world” rather than “being the best in the world,” all the parts that remain hidden to us because we know that we judge ourselves and the judgment that we receive from others only reinforces our beliefs and fears -- all the parts: the good,

the bad, and the ugly.

The year 2013 and beyond is about this self-acceptance. It is about stepping into that place of vulnerability and owning all the beautiful wisdom that lies deep within our hearts that we have kept dormant all these years. It is time to bring those gifts forward and allow our light to shine so that we can share our uniqueness and brilliance with the world.

We are all here for a reason, but we cannot keep those reasons hidden any longer. The only way to allow our gifts to come forward is to let go of self-doubt and practice self-acceptance and self-love.

So many people have been concerned with only displaying the “good” and seemingly “perfect” qualities that we have buried the true treasures that our souls have to offer. Elizabeth Kübler-Ross shared, “Should you shield the canyons from the windstorms, you would never see the true beauty of their carvings.” The true gifts are in those parts of ourselves that we fear; those are the parts that make us who we are and make us unique. The truth is that those are the buried treasures and that is where our true beauty lies.

It takes a true hero to be willing to step into the unknown and dig deep to see what hidden treasures our soul has waiting for us. Only then, when we are able to reconnect with our true selves, accept all the parts of ourselves and be vulnerable enough to be seen by the world, will we be able to connect whole-heartedly with each other. a Rachel Stewart, Ph.D., is an intuitive counselor and consultant dedicated to helping others with transformation and personal growth. S pring

by Pamela Smith “He’s dead,” she said, opening her apartment door. Her long brown disheveled hair framed a face stained with tears and mascara.

I had arrived back in Minneapolis from Guatemala two hours ago and went to my clinically depressed, recently diagnosed, bipolar type II, 19-year-old daughter’s place. Distraught over her grandfather’s stroke, she wanted to see me.

“It’s 2 a.m.,” she said before I could respond, still standing in the doorway, me in the hall, “I thought you were coming at 1.”

“Well,” I stumbled, looking at my feet that had been moving between two countries for 22 hours, wondering how long they’d be in the hall, “We hit six deer on the way, took out two, and here I am.”

“We?” she asked, flat affect, one hand on the doorframe and the other on the door.

“A friend,” I said, my lips tightening around my teeth, “I had a vision the other night that the passenger side of the car would be totaled. I just didn’t know I’d be in it.”

“Oh,” she said, turning and walking into her apartment.

“I’m okay though,” I said to her back, my eye’s scanning the top of the fridge for any vodka as I walked in.

As I walked dirt roads with barefoot children, their mothers balancing baskets of fruit on their heads, men with cords of woods strapped to their foreheads and tied around their backs, and random pigs and chickens, my children sat next to their grandfather, holding his hand as he cried out in pain.

My father-in-law had died before I returned. My mother-in-law died three months earlier, with two aunts and an uncle sandwiched in between. Five deaths in five months, I held my daughter while she cried.

During his mother’s wake, my husband and I stood with our children next to the open casket.

“Grandma looks better now than when we saw her last month at Christmas,” he said to the kids, breaking the silence, “don’t cha think?”

I just looked at him. They looked at her.

That’s embalming fluid, makeup. Your father will be dead in the spring, I thought, and I’ll be gone shortly after.

In the two weeks that followed his father’s death, I felt like a snake itching to shed its skin. As I embraced my distraught husband during those days, I wondered if we could find our way back to each other. We couldn’t.

I thought about two men in my life and could no longer hold onto what was lost nor grip what never was. I needed to give up what no longer worked in order to free my soul. My spirit was trapped like a snake in old skin; if a snake cannot slough, it dies inside, never revealing its beautiful new pattern. I was dying.

Desperate to be free, a life force began in my gut, circled my heart, and rose up my throat, begging to be released through my mouth.

Driving, I could no longer concentrate. I turned down a side street and pulled over. I desperately wanted to talk to the man I had fallen in love with. I needed to hear the sound of his voice, his laugh. But he hadn’t returned my text in over a week. Being sent to voicemail would be humiliating.

I left a message for a girlfriend instead.

The nerve endings in my skin were tingling and anxiety started traveling in waves from my toes to the top of my head. Loneliness consumed me. The need to hear someone’s voice was strong, someone who understood me. Needing his support and guidance, I called. I never heard from him.

 Spring continued from page 9 Maybe we believe lies so that one day we’ll trust our own voice.

Perhaps we feel abandoned so that we learn to stand on our own two feet. Maybe there’s no one to talk to so we are forced to listen to the Divine; so alone at night, we gaze at the moon, feeling its wisdom; ’til we understand those who love and support us often aren’t seen, but felt.

As I care for the one soul I am given, I ask myself if it is justice or healing I need. Seeking justice is ego. My ego wants to lash out at the hurt and deceit I’ve experienced, but I cannot separate myself from what I know, from the love and compassion I felt when my soul travelled across the ocean to the forest.

Entering the deep wood, a ginormous gnarly oak tree with its multitude of branches smiled at me as I placed my hand over its bark, crevices as wide as the Grand Canyon I’d never seen.

His dark brown carvings held my emotions and I brushed my fingertips over them, feeling the cracks of my own heart. I lowered myself in the small pool next to Tree. We were reunited then, the three of us. Tree was my heart and Pool my soul. Pool knows the way I am to go; she empowers me with strength and he supports me with love. I tucked both deep inside me that day.

Sitting in the car, I slowed my breathing, quieted my mind and felt their presence, their reassurance that everything would be okay; that though I would walk through this, I wouldn’t be alone.

I pulled away from the curb and headed home.

As we walked down the hall to where my husband was sleeping, I thought about the time I traveled through the castle, releasing names and presenting myself to the awaiting universe. I didn’t want to write him in the book then and didn’t want to release him now.

I stood outside his door, tears rolled down my face in a mixture of anguish and relief. My heart ached for the loss of our marriage; for our children; for a love never realized. Sometimes we want to love so badly we allow ourselves to be violated. I remembered soul traveling through a painting, brought to a time long ago where I saw myself in unhealthy relationships; where I felt the oppression on my skin, its stink filled my nose; and where I drank from the fountain of knowledge that was my soul, encouraging me to break the pattern I had created centuries ago. I’d been afraid if I acknowledged the obvious in my present relationships, I’d lose what I had. But I realized I didn’t have anything.

I knew the cost of not renewing my connection to the Divine, the Universe, and all that is eternal.

My spirit had been sick for years, manifesting itself as depression, drinking, and detachment. I’ve seen and felt what I needed. It’s powerful, real, and available to all. And though I haven’t found where I belong or whom to love yet, acting from a place of intentional power, I am becoming.

Alien encounters in the Upper Midwest

by Craig R. Lang First of a four-part series It’s a beautiful midsummer night. Only the chirp of a few crickets breaks the silence. A slight breeze rustles the treetops. Away from city lights you can see the Milky Way as if it were painted on the black dome of the sky. If you are within the city, you might only be able to see a few stars, but they are bright. And as you gaze upward, perhaps you notice something strange — one of those lights is moving.

You observe it for a few moments. It’s not an airplane, not a meteor, not a satellite — it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It grows brighter, moving, descending, resolving into a dot and finally into an ever-growing ball of light. Then, suddenly, the world becomes eerie and surreal — no crickets, no breeze, only a muffled silence. You find yourself held in place, first in fascination, then in fear as the object settles to earth frighteningly close to you.

For some readers, a scenario like this may be all too familiar.

If so, then you may be a close encounter experiencer or, in more common terms, an alien abductee. The phenomenon of UFO abduction is nearly universal. It affects nearly one in every 100 people worldwide — from all walks of life, cultures and locations. It seems to occur unpredictably and without warning. In future articles we will discuss more of this question, but for now, we will simply say that those affected seem to be arbitrarily selected, with little to indicate why.

In nearly twenty years as a UFO investigator and over fifteen years as a hypnotherapist, I have met many hundreds of experiencers. My files and those of other researchers bulge with descriptions of UFO sightings — many at close range. In many cases, a UFO may hover uncomfortably close, seemingly there for one particular person. Some only remember seeing the lights; for others, memories and emotions run much deeper.

Typical of many experiencers is a person I will refer to as “Nancy” (Note: Nancy is actually a composite of several experiencers with similar descriptions and stories). In one recent encounter, Nancy awoke late at night to see a brilliant white light shining through her bedroom window. Curious at first, her emotions quickly turned to fear as she found herself unable to move. Fear turned to panic as she saw several small beings appear suddenly, entering through the closed window on the beam of light. She could only watch helplessly as the aliens took their place around her bed. Then she found herself floating above the mattress as they guided her out through the closed window and into the light.

At that point, Nancy’s awareness usually blanks out and her recall of the experience ends. Yet, in some cases, she has additional conscious memories.

At least once, she remembers entry into the interior of the UFO, with fleeting memories of interactions with alien beings.

She recalls lying immobilized on a metal examining table in a room filled with brilliant light.

Several aliens stood around the table, performing some type of medical procedure on her.

They felt like scientists, with her as some type of experimental laboratory animal.

The memories are often dreamlike, glimmering at the edge of the conscious mind. Then, her next memory is of the morning sun shining through the bedroom window How many experiencers are there, actually? As mentioned above, about one person in a hundred appears to have had at least some degree of encounter and the phenomenon may be even more common. A few researchers even estimate that nearly everyone has had at least some interaction with the UFO and/or close encounter phenomenon. Yet, from these 1 percent numbers, we find that in a city of three million people, roughly 3,000 are probably experiencers. In a world of six billion people, it means there are approximately 60 million experiencers. Clearly, the phenomenon is massive.

Whatever they are up to, the task must be vital.

A lesson in stillness...to catch a butterfly...or not

It is often said that life is made up of many moments — and that to live within the stillness of the moment without expectations brings the greatest joy.

Butterfly encounters remind me of such an example. We have all seen their beautiful, colorful and intricately patterned wings. They flutter about, weaving in and out of flowers with a simplistic carefree style. They catch our attention out of the corner of our eye, gliding in and out of sight until we can no longer follow their trail, as a tree suddenly blocks our view. And sometimes if we are lucky, they’ll even land on us, revealing their quiet majesty by slowly opening and closing their delicate wings.

It is a moment we treasure, as it conjures up feelings of childlike wonder and awe. Something deep inside of us wants to keep it, beckoning the memories of summer days from long ago with safari hats and butterfly nets. Yet, we know now that catching butterflies would only result in a dismal life for them, short-lived in a jar.

The question still begs, “How do you catch a butterfly?”

Do you run around the yard flailing your arms madly when you spot one, demanding it to come to you? Or… would you have better success if you just stopped and perhaps…stood still? If only for a moment….

People, animals and even insects respond to calm energy. For people, this is evident at parties, work, school, the grocery store, at home, and everywhere in between. It’s even more apparent when our beloved pets don’t want to be around our bad moods, yet cannot wait to curl up on our laps when the opposite is true, if only for a moment.

Forcing a desired result through our thoughts and actions interferes with the purity of moments.

So, the next time you see a butterfly, try doing nothing at all. A Meditation for parents of teens

Indulge me for just a few moments in an exercise. Find a time when your teenager is occupied in a more public area of your home, somewhere other than her bedroom.

She may be reading, talking on the phone, playing a game or listening to music. For the purposes of this exercise, as long as she is occupied, it really doesn’t matter.

Now, find a comfortable seat in another room. First, I would ask you to gently remove from your mind, just for these moments, any feelings of anger, ill will, disappointment or resentment you harbor toward her.

Take a few moments alone to close your eyes and take a few deep, cleansing breaths.

For the next several minutes, assume that all is right with the world. You needn’t worry about a thing. You can cast all of your concerns, just for now, totally aside. As you inhale, allow your lungs to fill with a sense of well-being and contentment. As you exhale, envision your negative thoughts leaving you.

Once you feel calm, open your eyes.

Stand up, go into the room where your child is occupied, and take a seat. Continue your deep breathing.

Just watch her discreetly for a few moments as you attend to your breathing.

Sit quietly, watch and listen. With no demand on yourself, take note in your mind of what you see in her, what you hear from her. Look at the shine of her hair. Allow yourself to marvel at the perfection of her hands. Listen to her voice and her laughter, her very breathing.

Watch her smile. Does she ponder her world? In what ways does she look like you?

Now, look at your child’s beautiful eyes.

How long has it been since you have seen them in this way? Breathe in the miracle that is your teenager.

When you feel ready, go back to the room where you began this exercise, relaxing and breathing. Have a seat, and take a few more cleansing breaths. Now, think about your teenager. How are you 

Cilantro Lime Brown Rice

Whole grains have gotten a bad reputation with the Paleo craze, so let me share one reason why whole grains are an important part of your diet. The glucose in complex carbohydrates (the actual whole grain), is the primary fuel source for many of the body’s vital organs, including the brain. Serotonin levels will drop without consuming carbs, which can lead to feeling depressed.

4 cups cooked brown rice 1 lime 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped 1 teaspoon garlic, minced Sea Salt to taste Directions

In this exercise, I am encouraging you to see your teenager with the same sense of awe and wonder that you had when you first laid eyes on her, when she was a newborn baby. If you participated fully in this exercise, I’ll bet it felt pretty good.

If you conduct this exercise from time to time, you may find you get into the habit of appreciation and gratitude for the presence of your teenager in your life.

She makes things interesting, doesn’t she? She is a force. She can be upsetting and frustrating, yes. This, in fact, is part of her job. At her core, though, underneath it all, she is wonderful and amazing — a miracle, really.

2. Transfer cooked brown rice to a medium-sized bowl and let cool in the fridge for about 30 minutes.

3. Once the rice is cooled, cut a lime in half and squeeze lime juice onto rice.

Taste the rice and decide if you’d like to add the other half of the lime.

4. Then, chop fresh cilantro. Add the cilantro slowly until you reach your desired taste.

5. Next, add in 1 teaspoon of minced garlic and sea salt to taste. Mix thoroughly.

Accepting your intuitive inner sight for the outer world

Okay, let’s get one thing straight immediately: For most people, it is not about receiving it or how to receive intuitive insight. The bigger issue is about not ignoring it, dismissing it or doubting it! Intuition is defined as an instinctive belief, something known or believed instinctively, without actual evidence for it. It’s being aware of or knowing something without having to discover or perceive it.

In a world of proof and the need for evidence to prove something for acceptance, many people are uncomfortable with trusting their own, inner sight. Get out of your own way, my friends! Too many people are stopping the flow, because they cannot prove what they become aware of within their intuitive inner sight. When they receive it, they often choose to not trust it, because…well, what if they are wrong? Well, what if you are right! Years ago, I learned that when I ignore the inner awareness of inner sight, I suffer the consequences by ignoring it.

For me, inner sight often has an inner energy that comes with it, energy that resonates at the core of my Self. But it took me a while to recognize that. In reality, it was my inner-connected Self gently aligned with the Universe!

I tell just about everyone I work with that intuitive insight and awareness is FAST and essentially instantaneous.

Faster than lightning or the speed of light! It often arrives so quickly that a person often immediately dismisses the thought or awareness. Don’t!

By dismissing your intuitive awareness and insight, you are getting in the way of yourself. Get out of your way! No doubt! Trust it! Share it!

Truly: only love heals

by Nicole Taras Sitting in meditation today I found it extremely hard to focus on the subtle, present moment sensations in my body. Continually, I found my awareness off making to-do lists, mulling over past events, fretting about the future - and so forth. As I plugged on, determined to finish my 30-minute sit, I felt the growing frustration and disappointment with my meditation taunting me to quit.

While I stick as best as I can to a daily meditation practice, my motivation for sitting today was preparation for writing this Edge article. I thought I had something to share about the art of relaxation, having made what most therapists considered a miraculous recovery from five years of severe anxiety and panic attacks due to PTSD, without the aid of medication.

Today’s meditation certainly challenged my confidence in all this! Near the end of my sit, I had fully decided not to contribute to this month’s topic, but then as I continued sitting the familiar words, “Only love heals” drifted into my mind.

Only love heals is what Stephen Levine, a beloved spiritual teacher, said to me decades ago in the midst of my worst time of fear. At the time, I had just finished explaining to Stephen all the techniques I’d been practicing to try and relax the fear. I told him that no matter how hard I tried nothing worked. I felt like a failure.

I panicked my way through my daily relaxation sessions, deciding after each one that I was a hopeless case.

Stephen said, “Only love heals.”

When he said this I had no idea how to apply it. Certainly I could not love my anxiety. About a month later, in the middle of a panic attack, I got it. None of the therapy, relaxation techniques or meditations I tried could possibly work, because I was wielding them like a warrior

wields a sword into battle. But what was I battling against? Who was my enemy?

Myself. I waged war against myself. By making my own heart the enemy there was no safe place for “me.” No wonder I suffered continually mounting fear.

I brought such hatred to the fear in my heart - I wanted to annihilate it even though fear was a rational response to the life circumstances I’d been through.

With this new idea of love, I saw that it was more important to practice loving acceptance of what is than to stop fear.

I began practicing the same relaxation techniques with a loving attitude, and miraculously everything started to work.

Instead of thinking I had to change myself, I allowed myself to be just who I am - anxiety and all. I used relaxation techniques to take care of myself rather than expecting them to change me. This simple shift of intention created healing.

And so today in my meditation, I heard Stephen’s words and realized I was waging war against myself in this meditation.

Taking a deep breath, I allowed the tension and distraction in my mind to just be there. I allowed the judgment to drop. Having tension in the mind during meditation doesn’t make me a failure, it just is what’s happening right now.

Instantly, the tension dropped and love worked it’s miracle again. I felt calm and at ease.

I find it so interesting how my life’s lessons reappear over decades, each time teaching me Truth on deeper and deeper levels. Transforming Inner Stress Introducing a new way to clear inner conflict: An Edge Interview with Samuel Welsh

A potential paradigm shift in the resolution of inner stress has been introduced by transformational pioneer Samuel Welsh, author of the new book, Transforming Inner Stress: The Polarity Resolution Process. For veterans of the metaphysical community in the Twin Cities, Welsh is known for introducing energy attunements to support inner growth and planetary balance, as well as his collaboration with musician Richard Shulman on Ascension Harmonics. He also is the author of Creating Sacred Spaces for Communities and the Multilevel Balancing Process.

Welsh, of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, is returning to the Twin Cities in August to teach the Polarity Resolution Process and offer spiritual energy attunements that he has channeled from St. Germain.

Polarity Resolution Process (PRP) is a healing technique that foregoes verbal dialogue and traditional therapeutic techniques by inviting the Higher Self to resolve inner conflict that creates stress, disease and resistance to manifesting our goals.

What is your understanding of the root cause of inner stress?

Samuel Welsh: The way I define it is that

humans create what I call a polarity conflict structure. They have two opposing belief systems that are antagonistic to each other and two emotional charges — and they hold on to these simultaneously. What happens is an oscillation back and forth between those polarities. That is what we feel as stress.

Let me share an example from the book.

Alice is working in a job she can’t stand, but she feels she has to stay there to make money, and so she is oscillating back and forth between one polarity, “I need to stay,” and the other, “I need to leave.”

Let’s say there is a guy in a marriage and the wife is nagging him and he wants to leave the marriage. One of the polarities is, “I need to leave.” But the couple has three kids and he feels he needs to stay for them.

So, he has these two polarities in effect: “I need to leave” and “I have to stay for the kids.”

How does that affect the body?

SW: Stress, this oscillation between poles,

cascades down from our mental/emotional body to our etheric body, to our physical body. Stress is a state of disorder or chaos.

The body actually thrives on order and coherency, and it needs order and coherency for it to rejuvenate and regenerate and grow.

So if you are introducing chaos through stress, you are breaking up that coherence and ordered state. Chronic disease can result if you are holding onto a polarity conflict structure for years. It begins to disrupt the body blueprints — the ability of the body to heal and rejuvenate itself — and can actually create a degradation of organs and tissues.

What ultimately creates that polarity structure? The emotions? The mind? Our beliefs? Emotions? Fear?

SW: I think it first begins with our thoughts.

For example, if I feel like I’m being judged,

then that might engender anger in me at the person judging me. If I think that I am powerless, then that might engender a sense of grief within me. So it begins with a thought and then engenders an emotion.

Then those two become intertwined.

People can hold these negative thoughts and negative emotions and bind them together as a structure and they are introduced into their body, in their chakras (energy centers), in their meridians, in their organs and so on.

In your book you suggest that each of us most likely has a dominant polarity structure within us that may or may not be dormant.

SW: Yes, and what I find is that it is common

for us to deal with a situation by not making a choice. We sit on the fence. When we do that, we hold two opposing points of view at the same time. And if we do that again, and again, and again in our life, we begin to reinforce what I call the dominant polarity conflict structure. It can be slightly different for every person, but it is what we fall into if we don’t want to make a decision, like a job we can’t stand, but one we don’t want to leave. If we don’t want to make a decision, then that dominant conflict structure gets activated and more emotional conflict wells up in our life.

And, as you describe in the book, it’s not just one polarity structure, like keeping a job or not keeping a job. It’s layers and layers of these all operating simultaneously, right?

SW: Yes. Let’s say there’s a dominant polarity

conflict structure in which someone feels grief and believes he or she is a victim, and also feels anger and wants to lash out at the world. There can be many times in their life where, because of circumstances, they activate that structure and reinforce it where they feel grief and anger. It gets reinforced over and over, through different situations. Perhaps they lost a job or their wife left them or something like that. In each of those situations, that dominant conflict structure can be activated and reinforced.

Do you think these polarity conflicts keep arising to give us a chance to make a decision or to resolve it?

SW: Yes, that’s an interesting question. I

think on a higher metaphysical level, the answer is yes, that in a sense we call them in or create them to rise above them, to resolve them and rise above them. It’s like we choose before we incarnate that we want to learn to love without conditions, and so we choose then to enter a family where it is all conditional love and where there is emotional abuse and so on. I creates tension. The reason we chose that at a soul level is to rise above it, to learn to love without conditions.

I think on the highest level, from a

We actually choose and create these conflicts to resolve them. What I find with the PRP is that it is a very, very rapid resolution of the process versus taking lifetimes or multiple lifetimes to resolve it.

Let me just give you one example: Suppose a client comes to me and they’re feeling poor and they can’t make a lot of money and all that. What I may not know is that they have three past lifetimes bleeding through into their current life. In two of them they were slaves and in one past life they died as a beggar in medieval England.

Now these energies are bleeding through and affecting this life.

Well, the Higher Self of the client knows of those past lives and knows how to resolve them, and in multiple PRP sessions it will address them and resolve them. As a therapist, I may not know those lives exist, nor does the client know the lives exist, but those lives are creating a great impact. So, by having the Higher Self of the client do the healing process, it can address all the pastlife stuff, childhood stuff, negative emotions and negative beliefs that are creating that polarity conflict structure.

In your book, you suggest three ways to remove inner conflict structures: taking an enlightened path, getting off the fence, and the Polarity Resolution Process. Let’s talk about these.

SW: The enlightened path to me is seeing

Source or the Great Mystery Behind All Form, seeing that all form arises from Great Mystery and if you move deeply enough into that knowingness you see perfection in everything, regardless of what is going on in your life. Even though it is inconvenient or something you don’t like, it doesn’t engender a negative emotional reaction.

You realize it is part of the process. So, that’s a state that helps you move beyond the activation of polarity conflict structures.

In terms of getting off the fence, to me all polarity conflicts arise from sitting on the fence. You are holding onto two points of view and you choose not to make a choice.

You choose to not get off the fence in one direction or another. So, as long as you are on the fence holding on to these two

opposing points of view, you are going to create stress for yourself until you make a decision to get off the fence.

Let me give you an example: Suppose a woman is in a bad marriage, but this woman does not have any skills in the outer world.

She is not a typist. She is not a lawyer. She cannot make money. She is dependent on her husband for the income. Meanwhile, her husband periodically goes into a rage and projects negative energy at her. So she has a polarity conflict: she wants to leave the marriage because of the pain, and yet, if she packs her bag and walks out the door, she begins to realize she cannot make the money to support herself. So she goes back into the marriage. She has this conflict structure going on: “I need to leave,” “I can’t,” “I need to leave,” “I can’t leave,” and it oscillates back and forth.

If she made the choice to get off that fence and actually leave, then that conflict structure would not exist anymore. If she actually left the marriage and divorced the guy, there would not be any more conflict in her life around that issue.

It’s about getting off the fence and making the choice of which side of the fence you want to step off into, rather than holding on to two opposing points of view and emotions.

What are the benefits of PRP in our daily lives?

SW: I can speak for myself. Whenever I hit

points of resistance where I felt I needed to do something, like write a book or give a workshop, and I kept finding excuses not to work on it, I would do a personal PRP on myself, clear the resistance and then I would just charge ahead into the project. That is one of the ways it can help. It can also help you with disease. If you have physical ailments, it means that you have hidden polarity conflicts causing stress in the body and creating the problem. So, if you clear that on an energetic level, the body can begin to heal itself.

Generation (Epoch)alypse Evolutionary pagan

I grew up with a strong sense of impending doom. My childhood was filled with alternative books about the poles shifting, the collapse of the economy, and the alien invasion. Collectively, my generation was raised on Mad Max, Star Wars and “Outer Limits.” Everything popular came in a spaceship, including our salvation. As a society we witnessed the birth of the expression “drank the Kool-Aid” and lost our innocence at Columbine. We have seen several wars, Y2K, 9-11, Katrina, Haiti, the Sumatra Tsunami, and now Hurricane Sandy. Collectively we’ve held our breath wondering: Is the Apocalypse nigh?

My doomsday myth of choice was the Mayan End Date. I feared for my own future and in some ways felt as if I didn’t have one. On the night of December 20, 2012, I packed my bags and prepared to leave the city. If riots, the alien invasion, the end of gasoline or even the poles shifting was going to happen, I would not be caught off guard.

But nothing happened. It was the same as

any other day and, quite frankly, I was a little disappointed.

Now here we are, halfway through 2013, and I am wondering if I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. I have heard some wild theories about how the date is wrong, or such and such is bound to happen when the next grand conjunction occurs…but quite frankly, it’s falling on deaf ears. Haven’t we been through enough? Can we please stop equating “Apocalypse” with “Armageddon?”

I am tired of worrying about canned goods and taking survivalist lessons.

The word apocalypse is Greek and means “uncovering,” as in a prophetic disclosure or revelation. Armegeddon means “a decisive or catastrophic conflict.” All we have to do is look at Japan to see that Armegeddon has already happened. We’ve been waiting 2,000 years to finally write the last chapter of humanity. It’s one of the biggest mysteries of this age: How does it all end? People are literally dying to know.

I would like to suggest that the Grand Revelation is actually a cosmic joke. There is no end. No neat wrap-ip with a sign

that says “That’s all folks.” There is only a slow decline of the current status quo simultaneous to the growth and maturity of the next mode of being. I would like to propose an end to “apocalyptic” and replace it with “Epoch-alyptic” thought.

In the “epoch” paradigm, everything has its time. What is born and what is dying is equally celebrated. There is acceptance of the current now, as we collectively release our attachment to linear progression and embrace the cycles within our lives.

At this moment in time, there are multiple epochs in multiple cultures simultaneously speaking to the same thing: catastrophe and the end of an era. We could say that the biblical “End of Days” prophesy is the previous epoch witnessing its own death from the moment of its birth.

Our current awareness of myth, history and other cultures has created the possibility for a new global epoch — one that will not be concerned with its demise, because it is rooted in the cycles of life. But it’s up to the (Epoch)alyptic Generation to act like a cultural brush fire that clears old thought structures to make way for new growth of ideas.

It may be that global catastrophe is still imminent. It may happen in my lifetime that everything I know and understand will come to an end. But just as I cannot live in fear of random inner city violence, I cannot go on living under the threat and fear of unknown forces.

We are in an epoch of change. But we already know that the trauma of change is equivalent to the resistance it meets. I pray that I am a part of the last generation that grows up under the threat of “The End Times.” May we act like bamboo in the wind, gracefully bending and parting the way for the next generation, whispering the revelation of the (Epoch)alypse: “The future is what you make of it.” a Briana Crusan is a second-generation pagan and new age spiritualist. A blueprint of choices

A dear friend, now in his eighties, has taught me many valuable lessons over 23 years.

How he transcended his childhood is probably the most powerful lesson. My friend exemplifies what it means to become greater than the sum of your parts, to be able to live a quality life despite a harsh upbringing. To protect certain family members I will refer to my friend as Daniel.

Daniel’s father and mother were a troubled couple, to put it mildly. Daniel’s father was an alcoholic and a serial philanderer. When Daniel was a very young boy, he witnessed his father shove his mother down a flight of stairs during an argument.

As a mature man Daniel went looking for missing pieces of the mysterious puzzle of his childhood. He discovered why he had been sent to live in an orphanage: A few years before Daniel was born, his mother was sexually assaulted by someone in the family. She had kept this to herself, afraid to share it with anyone, until Daniel was about 7 years old. That is when his mother let it be known it was her fatherin-law who had raped her. Her husband rejected his wife’s story and succeeded in convincing the family that she should be committed to a mental institution.

Daniel never again as a child got to feel his mother’s embrace because this was during the era — and a tragic error — when children were denied visitation rights even in “regular” hospitals. He has one memory of being taken to the “insane asylum” as it was called back then, but he could only wave up to his mother from street level as she peered through the barred window of the institution. Daniel’s mother died there before he came of legal age.

Shortly after his mother had been committed, Daniel was sent to live in an orphanage. At the orphanage he was beaten many times by nuns and abused by males. He graduated from high school, left the orphanage and enlisted in the navy. Through the GI Bill he was able to get a college education and begin a career.

How Daniel became a loving person instead of bitter and dysfunctional has to do with choices. Daniel told me he decided while he was in the orphanage that he would never become like the people who mistreated him. He also made a decision that he would work as hard as it took to create the life he wanted to have, and not live a life that was made by someone else that would keep him a victim. He also decided he wanted to have a wife and family and he put all of his energy toward building a career that would afford him that kind of life.

Having been abused as a child, Daniel knew he would never want to hurt anyone, so as he grew into adulthood he spoke gently, acted like a gentleman and tried his best to be a good person.

In his twenties and with a steady job, Daniel was able to marry and provide for a wife who chose to work at home to raise their children. He became a faithful husband, and a devoted father of four children and several grandchildren. By every standard of measurement, Daniel has been successful.

You, too, have the power to make decisions that will determine what kind of person you are going to be today and what kind of life you create. You can spend a lot of time rehashing or repeating all of the mistakes both your parents have made (if you even know who your parents are) or rehashing your own mistakes. Or you can choose to let go of that fixation and anger and direct all your energy into empowering yourself to thrive. It is simply a matter of choices and making up your mind, cultivating your mind like Daniel did.

When you choose to put your attention on the positive aspects of your life and the opportunities you have, as Daniel did, you are essentially deciding to love yourself even more than your parents may have been capable of loving you. Developing into an affectionate, generous and compassionate person like Daniel became will also help create situations to draw forth from others an abundance of loving expression.

I have thought a great deal about the fibers of energy that connect Daniel and me. I have watched how this simple thread of wisdom has moved both of us beyond the pains of a distant past toward feeling love, being loved, and being the embodiment of loving. This wisdom has brought us straight into the embrace of an unforgettable friendship and an enduring peace.

For some people, it may take great tragedies and suffering to become open to a different way of behaving, and to break out of a cycle. What Daniel showed me years ago about himself was something we all have within us: the power of choice and the ability to forgive…to forgive even those who commit the most grotesque acts, or what most would consider evil.

Daniel explained to me he had chosen not to make any suffering the centerpiece of his being or to be victimized by tragedy. Instead, he used the examples of abuse and suffering as a springboard to leap into a joyous life of forgiveness and love. Daniel had learned that to move ahead one has to choose to make the dominant beat of one’s heart a rhythmic pulse of forgiving all things and all people, remaining in the awareness of compassion.

That is how anyone can choose to design a masterful blueprint of peace that is uniquely their own. a Giselle M. Acupuncture for the New Age: Get the root cause of issues

by Warren King Acupuncture is all about getting the qi or life force energy to flow smoothly through the meridians and organs. Inserting acupuncture needles can be very effective at regaining this flow, but to make sure the flow is sustained we must work at the root causes of the qi blockages.

Sometimes someone’s energy is off due to a wrong diet, so I work to discover if food allergies or sensitivities are blocking the system and determine the right diet for the individual.

If organisms such as yeast, viruses, bacteria and parasites are present, these should be removed or else progress will be temporary.

Emotions and painful memories, which can get stuck in the unconscious, affect the meridians and organs and should be dealt with. Sometimes homeopathy and flower essences can be more powerful than just acupuncture and herbs alone.

There are cases in which people need a therapist to speak with when emotions come up. I do find that how Chinese medicine corresponds to organs and emotions is really accurate. Heart is sadness, lungs are grief, spleen is over-thinking and worry, kidney is fear and liver is anger.

Finding a toxic focus can be important, otherwise you are just treating symptoms.

Sometimes mercury dental fillings are a powerful toxin that must be removed from the teeth; occasionally an infected root canal can be the problem. Other toxins I find in people are pesticides, artificial sweeteners, and poisons in tap water like fluoride. Lately I’m finding that many people are sensitive to electromagnetic fields, wifi and cell phones, which can disrupt the meridians. These are disturbances that an ancient

science like Chinese medicine would not have known about.

When the meridians need to be balanced, there are many ways to stimulate the points besides needles. Some of the methods I employ are lasers, microcurrents, electric stimulation, gem stones, tuning forks, acupressure, heating with moxabustion, infrared heat, magnets, essential oils, gold needles and emitting qi from the fingers into the points. I find that children have such sensitive and responsive systems that I practically never need to use acupuncture needles.

Exercise is very important for moving the qi and blood. It is best to have a balance of Western aerobic training and weights with Eastern exercise of yoga, tai chi and qi gong, along with breathing exercises.

Notes on a plague Never underestimate the value of acupuncture and honor those who provide the care

by Efrén Francisco Solanas I often ponder how I have survived HIV for 27 years.

I attribute my longevity to my mother’s inspired lessons that food is medicine and to avoid allopathic drugs unless absolutely necessary. I look with gratitude to my grandmother, who in her bright kitchen would make carrot juice while introducing me to the wonder of the herbs harvested from her garden.

Lastly, and very importantly, for ten years I have taught a healing modality called the Frequencies of Brilliance. Working in this crucible of transformation has strengthened and centered me in many ways. I am deeply grateful to whatever Grace it is that allows me to continue to live, and to live well.

My orientation to alternative health helped me resist the first medicines used to treat HIV infection. My abstinence was vindicated as the drugs decimated my friends, killing many before achieving benefit. For 13 years, strengthened by natural medicine, I remained free from all types of opportunistic infections. However, by 1999, the virus had nearly eliminated my immune system. I started anti-viral drugs. It was these very medications that brought me to death’s door. Traditional Chinese Medicine, particularly acupuncture, helped me circumvent the challenges.

My first acupuncture treatments were received at a clinic created by an innovative AIDS organization in San Francisco called The Shanti Project. A practitioner always began the session with a short interview, asking about my physical and emotional states. After taking my “pulses” and examining my tongue, she would lead me into the clinic treatment room where she would apply a unique configuration of needles, designed to meet my unique needs at the time.

To step into the Shanti acupuncture clinic was entering a battlefield hospital. People of varying degrees of health lay on massage tables in a large room without separation. In our culture, the lack of privacy might have been jolting, but I valued the sense of community. I would rest quietly on a massage table in the soft light made dusky by the pungent smoke of moxa, an herb burned during treatments.

I am sensitive, so it was natural for me to feel the response of the “qi” in my body expanding as each needle was inserted, softly creating an ocean of vibrating energy. The volunteers who applied moxabustion silently approached the table to tenderly add heat to each needle. I would drift into a deep sleep, waking later at peace and renewed. This communal gathering allowed some of my isolation to dissolve, and for an hour, I was not alone in my quest to heal.

I honor the brave acupuncture doctors who treated the HIV patients, rejecting the prejudice and fear that existed at that time.

As a practitioner, my first discovery of the value of Chinese medicine was a paradigm shift. I was able to put the name of “qi” (“chi,” or life force energy) to something I had been aware of for a long time. The mechanistic view of the body had never made sense. All people, including myself, feel an intuition about others, a sense of who they are.

There is no mechanical model that can account for this.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) view imparts that life is fluid rather than static, so the physical, mental and emotional aspects of who we are are not separate. Because of this, all aspects and experiences of illness can be quantified and accounted for in this system. After I was introduced to qi, the whole knowledge of the human body opened up, as a healing tool and as a translator for the Spirit.

There is high integrity within Chinese medicine and its thousands of years of experience. This value is from extensive use and extensive observation for what works over time. The experiences have been recorded and preserved in great volumes of reference.

TCM has survived under social and political changes throughout the world, demonstrating the inherent value of the information. Since it does not depend on technology, it can be used over time with only a few adjustments for modern use.

TCM can be adjusted to treat sensitive patients.

A TCM assessment takes into account the patient’s constitution. It is symptom based, so each illness treated depends on the person instead of the disease. This also leads to the importance of the well-being of the client over the course of the treatment. The disease is not attacked, so therefore, neither is the client. This approach to medicine found in the East is a unique philosophical view.

TCM is complete medicine with: unique diagnostic tools, such as noting the pulse and tongue; unique diagnosis, with organ channels addressed; and unique healing tools, which include cups, needles and herbs. Since it is a whole medical system by itself, no other medicine is necessary for

day-to-day health.

Chinese medicine is natural medicine. It is congruent with the biological and energetic systems of the body. It does not, philosophically, consider the human to be separate from the natural, and therefore, it addresses the true functioning of a human. The philosophy also is able to extend to all aspects of life.

Aside from acknowledging qi, a client can give herself medicine through food. TCM offers a wealth of knowledge for a dietary system that complements the other aspects of the medicine. The time of year, time of day and environment the client sleeps in are all considered in the diagnosis. I think this puts the patient more at ease, taking the subjective experience readily into analysis for diagnosis. If a client says that the joint pain is worse when it rains, for example, that is important information for the diagnosis. Since the experiences of the client are important, the client gets more personal attention than in a modern medical visit. Simply being able to tell someone who understands her ailment relieves stress. This may be the first step towards recovery.

As a practitioner, practicing Chinese medicine has allowed me independence. I wanted to help people as a career, but never liked working for anyone. I am able to make my own choices about how to treat and how much time to spend pursuing the information. I can add new information at any time to my practice. I could spend a lifetime learning new things about TCM, and that keeps me interested and fascinated.

Since I believe that learning is the goal of life, I can fulfill the needs of my soul while performing valuable services. Acupuncture, herbs offer pain relief

by Nada Robertson Hogan & Jen Myers-Jones With the growing success of acupuncture, the licensed practitioner is frequently asked, “Can you help with my back pain?” The answer is yes.

Acupuncture can lower the symptoms of pain, often relieving it. Neck, shoulder knee or thumb pain — you name it — we can try to help relieve the pain.

Facing any physical ailment, we human beings try to cope by limiting our activities, trying different pain medications, seeking alternative healing methods or — as a last resort — having surgery on the affected area, all of which can have limited success.

Medications often dull the pain, but they don’t make it go away, and too often they come with their own list of side effects. We all wish we felt as good as we did before the trauma or before the pain flared up.

Many studies have confirmed the efficacy of acupuncture on chronic pain. A recent Journal of American Medical Association’s archives of Internal Medicine states: “Acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic pain and is, therefore, a reasonable referral option.”

Note that to have relief from your symptoms, it may take eight or more acupuncture treatments to feel better and sustain the effects. Even after those treatments, you may need monthly tune ups. Your chronic pain is something you have been adjusting your life around for a while; therefore, it may take some time to stimulate its reprieve.

Herbal medicine Chinese medicinal herbs have been used and studied for more than 2,000 years. With that kind of history, these herbs must be doing something right. One of the fascinating things about Chinese herbs is they have an affinity for different areas of the body. For instance, herbs that are beneficial for low back pain may not be the best choice for neck pain. The same is true for pain or discomfort in the abdomen, or pain in the head, like a simple headache. The herbal formulas are formulated for the area of the body in pain, the severity and

the type of pain. Some pain is sharp and stabbing, some is dull and achy, other pain tends to move about the body. It’s hard to determine the origin of some pain. These are exactly the things an Oriental medicine practitioner needs to know to prescribe herbs correctly.

These are the attributes to Chinese herbal medicine. When prescribed correctly, pain can be targeted and alleviated. Pain is a condition brought on by many factors. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, a common reason for pain is qi (“chi,” or life force energy) and blood stagnation. When qi and blood cannot flow smoothly, pain occurs, much like a river with debris and branches blocking its smooth flow.

The herbs allow the channel to open up, move the stagnation and allow for the free flow of qi and blood, hence removing the discomfort.

Pain and discomfort also can come from inflammation, such as the over use of a muscle after the first softball game of the season. And how about those muscle cramps in the calf in the middle of the night? An herbal combination would target a specific deficiency, instead of an overuse of a muscle. These examples show that muscle pain may seem similar, but they are treated quite differently.

Herbal medicines have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and anti-analgesic functions. Because herbs have these properties on specific regions of the body, it is no wonder herbal medicine is so popular. Each formulation that is made is as unique as the person in need of pain relief.
