May you flow through life From the Editor

The hummingbird does not rest idly by waiting for inspiration before it darts under the eaves of the neighbor’s house, around the corner and over to the flower garden where it feasts upon the sweet nectar of the honeysuckle.

It just lifts its wings and follows the flow.

Life is flow.

Our lives are flow, from the moment we take our first breath until we take our last: the circular rhythm of inhale and exhale; oxygenated blood replenishing the cells of our body and then returning to the lungs; nutrition distributed where needed, the waste eliminated.

But beyond biology, each of us follows the flow toward our innermost quest, our deepest wisdom alert for moments — ah, meet this person for she will be your partner in life — ah, take this class for it will reveal your talents — ah, take that trip for it will inspire your passion — and we meet that person who is so special and take that elective class that proves to be our life calling and go on that unexpected journey and discover our love for painting.

That is just my theory as to how synchronicity works in our lives. I believe everything happens in the flow, like magnets attracting or repelling in a given moment. Most of us are not consciously aware of what is taking place. We’re like bobbers in the water just drifting along, not aware that around the next corner our life may drastically change. Inwardly, we may feel uncertainty in our bones and anxiety in our minds, but we’re not sure why.

We can become more conscious of our place in life if we choose. Myriad opportunities exist to awaken to it. 2014 has been called the “Year of Mindfulness.” Time magazine profiled “The Mindful Revolution” on its February 3 cover.

Meditation coupled with mindful practices in our waking life truly are a path to not only seeing the flow, but moving with it.

mind will think and think and think you into despair. It will propose ideas out of the blue that not only are not true, but are so convincing that you will believe them.

The mind has many people believing that needs and desires of human beings are to be considered over and above any concerns of the natural world. That is why green energy is not what we all use to power our lives. That is why “treehugger” is a pejorative in some circles. That is why residents of Beijing and now Paris must wear respirator masks to breathe outdoors. That is why tropical coral reefs around the world will all be destroyed by the end of this century and the polar bear likely will be extinct, as well.

We are an intrinsic part of nature, down to our DNA and the chemical elements in our bodies, and yet our minds are increasingly separating us from nature. Instead of growing vegetables and harvesting them in a community garden, we use Farmville. Instead of walking the paths through Glacier Park, we watch images of them on the Discovery channel. Of course, many of us still revere nature, but the growing number of people who don’t should alarm us.

Technology, as an entity, mimics the mind and believes it has all the answers, and if it doesn’t have them now, it will find them, or duplicate that which can be found in nature.

Artificial sweeteners. Artificial intelligence.

Human beings, like all creatures great and small, are channels of wisdom. And beyond that, we are intricate, multidimensional holographic portals for the soul.

These past few months have demonstrated to me that trying to control the flow never works.

It is self-sabotage. It leads to sadness. It is a dead end. When I breathe and open to possibility and follow my instincts and create something new when I am inspired, good things follow.

Conscious Living Expo coming to Lake Harriet The second annual Conscious Living Expo presented by Lake Harriet Spiritual Community will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday April 5, at 4401 Upton Ave. S., in South Minneapolis. Admission is free.

Imagine living in a temple: a home where your body’s energy systems are nourished rather than depleted, a place where the walls establish a perimeter of true energetic protection, and everything you interact with results in a beneficial outcome. Humanity’s Teacher has returned to guide us

Looking at world affairs today, reading and watching the daily news, it seems that all we hear about is corruption, sectarian conflict, war and death. Is that all there is happening in the world? And if so, is there any possibility that something can be done to create a better world, one in which no one goes without the basic necessities of life and the opportunities needed to develop the God-given talents that make our lives worth living?

Yes, indeed there is such a possibility, in fact more than just a possibility, a distinct probability. A story has been developing, largely under the radar of mainstream news, that promises the world…to the world. A great spiritual teacher has returned to the everyday world to inspire us, to awaken us to who we really are, and to stimulate that divine potential or spark that exists within each of us, and fan it into the glorious flame of Love and Light. From that Light, humanity will create as never before and it will radiate the Love of God to all the kingdoms, and eventually it will banish the pain and suffering that defines so many lives today.

His personal name is Maitreya, “the happy one.” He heals. He comforts. He inspires joy.

He embodies the Love energy of God and daily sends that Love throughout the world,

stimulating and uplifting the hearts of all who are open. He appears to many people throughout the world, whether they know who He is or not. Historically, at the beginning of each age, a teacher has come to show the way, point the path for the new time, usually working through a senior disciple. At this start of the Age of Aquarius, for the first time in human history, the Teacher has come Himself. mandalas of the soul Itineraries

After spending the first 53 years of my life in California, I moved to the Twin Cities. I’d be a lying if I told you that there are four seasons on the left coast.

There is no discreet transition between the warm, sunny days of summer and the damp, rainy monotony of winter. My new life in Minneapolis is a continual fascination with the exuberance of the weather in the Upper Midwest. It’s thrilling to contend with the intense cold of winter and I am transfixed by the magic of falling snow!

The small garden I tend explodes in spring, becoming a lush tangle of colors in just a couple of months. Summer is a damp and brazen heat that wraps the Cities for a brief period, driving exuberant residents into the streets and out to the lakes. Fall is authentically…well, fall, with streets buried in multi-colored leaves and temperatures that transform your breath to visible vapor.

For a California boy, this is the stuff of storybooks. I cherish each day.

The seasons have been teaching me that there is a time for action, creation and movement, and also a time for stillness and rejuvenation. This wisdom of balance is gradually manifesting in my life. Previous to moving to my apartment on Lyndale Avenue, I ran a continual marathon, teaching courses on several continents with little pause. Now I clearly see the importance of creating a time of rest.

Last December, as I was completing a series of courses in Brazil and preparing to leave the humid heat for the frigid, northern hemisphere, I received strong guidance to create a short course, focused on tranquil rejuvenation. All my previous courses have involved long, intense days of work resulting in certification. The new offering was to rise from the intention to rest and receive. I had many possibilities to choose from for the course itinerary. I knew the three days would be nourished by the transformational healing technique that I teach, the Frequencies of Brilliance. I also wanted to share the Vipassana tradition that has been a perennial presence in my life and granted me deep experiences of union.

A third element was gently carried to me via a conversation with a friend who mentioned her daily practice of drawing mandalas — and something immediately felt right.

Many of us have a general knowledge of the ancient tradition of the mandala. I have one hanging in my treatment room — a gift from a friend who purchased it in a Nepalese market. As I began to research them, I discovered strong evidence that the mandala was the perfect complement to the

other two elements, and together, would form the hibernal retreat.

I want to share with you the startling synchronicity sponsored by this powerful, ancient tool. During my investigations I encountered Mandalas, by Dr. Judith Cornell. One exercise in her lovely book stood out: drawing on black paper with a white pencil. This was perfectly suited to our winter course in the Wisconsin woods,

surrounded by a snow-covered forest in hibernation. I was fascinated to discover that Carl Jung used the mandala extensively with clients, as well as in his individual healing journey. In 1959, he wrote, Mandala Symbolism.

At the beginning of my course last January, each student was given a white pencil and a black piece of paper with a large, white circle drawn in the center. After blessing the materials and a suggestion to draw from the soul — not from the mind — we began. Marvelous images appeared on the paper, authentic expressions of each person’s unique, divine spark. The drawings became more ornate during the following three days. At the close of our last day, the images were fully formed. We gazed in joyous awe at the glowing flowers hanging on the walls surrounding our workroom!

It is tantalizing to tease white images out of a black void while giving free reign to the deep psyche to speak of the forces present.

Our magnificent images held within the white circle on the black paper are powerful metaphors for the integration of the sum of our aspects, joining together as one.

It’s alchemy when we allow ourselves to draw spontaneously. Polarity dissolves as density is transformed into a dance: an intuitive, integrative movement towards higher consciousness.

Our entire world resonates with many circles! We view the universe through circular lenses: a black pupil surrounded by a colored iris. Our planet, the moon and the sun reflect these orbs. The circle repeats in nature: the waves resulting from a stone dropped into a pond, a gopher’s dark burrow, an arc created by flower petals, the walls of our cells, and the galaxies that swirl their arms in circular rotation. The circle is one of Creation’s foundational symbols and was likely the first form used by human beings to create sacred space: the monoliths of Stonehenge, the medicine wheel, the mandalas of Tibetan Buddhism, the tholos in the sanctuary of Athena and the domes of countless churches.

The mandala is a womb, protecting all the aspects of Self. Yoga: Tree Pose Yoga for YOU

This month’s pose, Vrksasana (Tree Pose), builds stability, grace and balance.

As with all postures, the more you practice a pose the more it comes with ease; the more intentionality you give to a pose, the more awareness you develop. Tree pose is designed for practitioners to reveal inner peace and express themselves uniquely as they breathe deeper into the pose.

The accompanying photo was taken after a weeklong teacher training intensive in the Catskills. I can recall the calm energy of this rock, as well as how stable and at peace I was in that moment. Now, when my balance is aligned, Tree Pose brings me into deep peace and tranquility.

I can feel the ground beneath my standing leg and the energy that reaches up through my body and out the crown of my head.

There is a sense of fulfillment in the posture that can only be enjoyed when experienced. So let’s experience it!

Stand with your feet parallel in Mountain Pose. Bring your palms together over your heart. Focus your eyes on a still point in front of you. Shift your weight into your right foot. Lift your left heel off your mat. Turn your left knee out to the left and rest your left heel just above you right anklebone. This is the first option for the pose and you can stay here. If you are ready to go deeper, bring the arch of your left foot to your right calve. If you would like to go even deeper bring the arch of your left foot into your inner right thigh. In each of these variations, your left knee will point out to the left in external rotation.

Hold this side of the pose and breathe. Feel the incredible support from the ground beneath you. Feel the length of your body. Feel the touch of your palms. Breathe. Repeat the Mantra “I am at peace” ten times. Release your left foot. Take a breath.

Move to the other side. Apple Bread

If you follow a gluten-free diet, you know the feeling of longing for a moist piece of bread. This apple bread will make you smile as you bite into the soft texture. Your body does not need any natural sweeteners or flour, so eat sparingly and share with friends and family.

Ingredients 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted 1/3 - 1/2 cup honey, warmed 1 egg 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce 1 cup brown rice flour 1/2 cup quinoa flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp sea salt 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp xanthan gum 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped 1/2 cup pitted dates, chopped 1 cup diced apples, skin on 1/4 cup crushed pineapple

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.

2. In a large mixing bowl, beat oil and honey until mixture is smooth and well blended. In a small bowl, whisk the egg and add it to the honey mixture. Stir in the applesauce.

3. In another bowl combine brown rice and quinoa flours, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and xanthan gum, and stir. Add the flour mixture to the honey mixture and mix well. Then add the walnuts, dates, apples and pineapple. Spoon the batter into the prepared loaf pan.

4. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick or sharp knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack, then remove from pan.

A Religion of One’s Own An interview with author Thomas Moore on creating meaning in life

Thomas Moore, author of the bestselling books Dark Nights of the Soul, Care of the Soul and fourteen other books on deepening spirituality and cultivating soul in every aspect of life, returns to us with A Religion of One’s Own, a book that personalizes the sacred experience and gives us permission to reimagine and recreate our own interpretation of religion, as well as to go deeper and explore the magic, mysticism, art, eros and wisdom of our chosen path with both intelligence and intuition.

He acknowledges the trend of seekers to pick and choose aspects of formal religion and indigenous spiritual traditions, but that is not what he is encouraging here. Moore tells us: “A Religion of One’s Own is not a reasonable, placid or convenient way to be spiritual. It’s an opening to the full thrust of what it means to be part of a vast, mysterious and powerful existence. Like all real religion, it is basically a willingness to stand at the edge of our existence…open to the full potency of what it means to be alive.”

Moore was a monk for more than twelve years, a musician, a university professor and a psychotherapist, and today he lectures widely on holistic medicine, spirituality, psychotherapy and the arts. He has written widely for noted print and digital publications, has appeared on numerous television programs and had his own PBS special called “The Soul of Christmas: A Celtic Music Celebration with Thomas Moore.”

He spoke by phone from his home in southern New Hampshire about his new book and his ideas about religion and spirituality.

What inspired you to write A Religion of One’s Own? Thomas Moore: Several

things did, but one of the main things is that I’ve heard from people when I travel. Time after time people tell me that they have abandoned their religion of the past and they are out looking for something. They don’t like to be without a form of religion, but nothing appeals to them and nothing makes sense to them, so they remain in limbo and they ask me about it. I’m also trying to address people who have no interest in religion whatsoever, and try

Thomas Moore, noted author on the soul to present a way that I think would make sense for them to take more responsibility for themselves and more pleasure in it for themselves to create their own approach to spiritual matters.

In a general sense, what role does religion play for the soul and what are the consequences for a soul not exposed to religion?

TM: That’s a really good question. Even

the religion of the past has allowed people to have a way of relating to those things that are quite mysterious in their lives; for example, to relate to their mortality, to death and dying, to have a sense of their place in the natural order of things, and to follow up their own ideas about how they should live, ethics and what work they should do and whether they should be married or not.

Religion also has allowed people to have the rituals around things, like marriage and death and children coming into the world.

These are all really important moments in life and they are quite mysterious and they reach very, very deep inside of us, and if you don’t have religion then you have no way of accessing that. These are all matters of soul, in my language, so religion and soul go together.

What is your sense of the relationship between our current world and religion?

TM: I think what’s happening is that our

world, our culture, is becoming more and more secular, and people don’t even know it. I have great reverence and appreciation

for science and technology, but when they enter the sphere of meaning and try to tell us what life is all about, in terms of chemistry or how our brains work, those are all materialistic things. They are extremely valuable, but they are materialistic and I think sometimes our scientists overreach what they should be doing.

I think the way people get information in the news and other sources gives them the impression that they can go it alone, that they don’t need religion, that science can handle or explain everything and give us our meaning for the future and that it’s going to be a technological future. I think that would be a real shame, because a human life is much more subtle than that.

There is a spiritual dimension; there is a soul dimension. I think that’s where we are at the moment, and that’s the importance of the conversation that is developing around a book like mine.

A Religion of One’s Own is very much an active book in terms of encouraging the reader to create a dynamic religious life that embraces everything from the natural world, sexuality, magic, dreams, intuition, ritual, and much more. I sense that many people engage in some aspects of many of these arenas without necessarily connecting it to the religious path.

TM: That’s the difference between writing

about spirituality and writing about religion.

I wanted to use the word “religion” for a number of reasons, and one of them is that I wanted to connect what I was writing about to the traditions from the past, what we understood religion to be in the past, as an organized institution, and how you put together a lot of different practices and different ideas into a whole.

I don’t think that just developing one’s spirituality does that. I think it is helpful for a person to feel that they have a religion where all these practices make sense together, instead of just stringing them along as separate elements. So what I wanted to do is use the word “religion” to suggest that people can have their own religion in the same way that they may have joined a religion in the past, only in this case the religion is going to be theirs and not something that they borrow from somebody else.

I do think that another good of the word “religion” is to understand that for a person today to create his or her own religion, it really is indispensable to be able to draw important ideas and inspirations from the past, from religious traditions in the past. I

In developing a religion of one’s own, it’s important to cultivate an eye of the numinous, a sacred light within things or an aura around them, the feeling that there is more to the world than what meets the eye. think that my book gives great honor to the religions of the past, and I don’t think it’s a cafeteria approach or just a superficial way of picking a few things from here and there. What I’m suggesting is a very solid and deep exploration of the various religious traditions so they affect you as a person and that, over time, you actually evolve your own religion in part from what you have learned from these many different traditions.

I find many people with whom I am in connection embrace the label of being spiritual, but it is often nothing more than a surface level adornment that they are presenting to the world about themselves. Do you find that is the case — and is it because people are so distracted that they don’t go deeper?

TM: Yes, I think it is true that what people today

call spirituality can be very superficial. It isn’t always that, but I think it can be, and it very easily can be because people don’t have much of a background. We don’t teach religion and spirituality. We don’t teach our children that.

It is interesting to me that one response to this new book of mine has come from parents of children of various ages, adult children or very little children, and they are saying that they are so concerned about their kids, that they want them to have a spiritual life. They want them to have something of religion that they, themselves, had when they were young, and they don’t know what to do because the kids have no interest and they don’t see any point in it.

I think that my work here offers a path for parents, because what they can do is see that the children have their own natural spirituality — and they can foster it and they could even teach them and show them different religious traditions. The reason we have had a superficial approach to spirituality is because people haven’t studied it. We study math and science and social matters and languages, but we don’t study religion. In America especially, people are afraid that if someone teaches religion that they will impose their own points of view on children.

That could be, but it is not a good idea to ignore religion study altogether.

I have a Ph.D. in Religion, I have thought about religion all my life. What I’m trying to do is present religion in a very serious way in a way that can be adapted and adopted by each

individual person in a serious way so that it’s not dismissed as something superficial. I think a lot of people had only had a childhood education in religion, and when they become adults they are just not happy with what they have learned. Religion could be studied much more profoundly than that.

For somebody who is part of a formal religious tradition — part of a church, a temple, a mosque — why should they consider redefining religion for themselves?

TM: Mainly because many people up to now have

gone to the religion, let’s say to a church or a synagogue, and they have put themselves there and they have just said, “Okay, what you’re doing makes sense to me or it’s my family’s tradition, so I can participate in this, and that means that I will accept whatever you tell me I have to accept, like ideas or practices and moral positions, things like that.”

That’s a very passive approach, and it’s not been very mature and not very adult. Unfortunately, our churches have not really fostered the spiritual development of the people under their care. Rather they have, it seems to me, been more interested in making sure everyone believes properly and correctly and that they attend church and that they are practicing members, but they don’t really guide the person in their own spirituality as part of their religion. That’s a huge mistake, as far as I’m concerned.

People are bored with churches, and as a result they go through the motions, but it doesn’t really affect how they live. Today people are realizing that this world is becoming more secular and it’s a dangerous thing, but they don’t know what to do about it, as I said at the beginning. So, I think that it’s important that they can be part of a tradition if they want, but they also have to foster their own understanding of it. I’ve been quoting Emerson who said, “Every church has a membership of one.” I think what he’s getting at there is a number of things: one is that everyone in a religion, every member, is going to understand it in his or her own way; and that each person should understand it individually, so that it’s alive and something very meaningful to them, and not just something that they surrender to.

 Moore continued from page 17 One quote that I wrote down in reading your book was, “The one ingredient missing in much of modern spirituality is intelligence.” I thought that was pretty bold — and accurate.

TM: Well, I’m afraid so. It’s just that we do not

teach religion and spirituality. How can you expect people to be intelligent about it, because they don’t even know what to read. A lot of contemporary spiritual literature, it seems to me, does not have much depth to it. Everyone says the same thing: live in the present, be here now, love everybody, be in the light. What do these things mean? You know, they’re slogans that really don’t mean anything and they are quoted over and over again. They are meaningless and they tend to be sentimental.

There is a lot of work to be done in deepening the spiritual life. The traditions have great literature. Look at the theology in Christianity, there is so much greatness there, and it’s not all just wooden. Many theologians of the past were very brilliant and had very important things to say. The mystics have a lot to teach us, and that’s true of all the religions. Buddhists have had one book after another from the past written with a great deal of intelligence about what it is to be a spiritual person.

The other thing that I’m always quoting are the monks. It was the Irish monks who saved civilization by developing their libraries and translating texts and writing their own theology, their own commentaries on what they received.

We don’t do that anymore. How many people major in Theology? I don’t think contemporary theologians should study just their own tradition.

It would be wonderful if we had theologians who could study the mysteries, birth and death and sickness and marriage and understand how profound these experiences are. They are not just psychological, they are spiritual and we need theological reflection on them.

Many conversations presented in modern spirituality focus on the light. What role do darkness and negativity have on the religious path?

TM: I think anyone with any spiritual and psycho-

logical sophistication these days understands that

life is full of wonderful experiences and a lot of tragic ones — and all of us have to deal with death constantly. Illness is a huge thing in people’s lives, and every time we get sick it’s an indication of our mortality. Many of us have to face very serious illness and so there’s a lot of darkness.

There are many endings that people have to go through. One of the most painful things people go through is divorce. There is crime on our streets. People are afraid in our society. But, what’s going on with so much crime? How can people treat each other that way?

It’s a grand illusion to pretend that life is all light. It isn’t, and it’s also an illusion to think there are only some people out there who are dark. Everyone has a dark aspect to them.

I’m not just inventing that. Many spiritual and psychological writers have said that. We have to acknowledge that and develop a spirituality that is sophisticated — beyond what I would call sentimental spirituality, meaning that it does not acknowledge the dark.

Is there a final message you would like to leave with our readers?

TM: I think the main message is that the religion

that I am proposing here, a religion of one’s own, is a pleasurable one. A lot of people have an experience of formal religion where they have suffered or they have been taught that it’s good to suffer or that you should do things that you really don’t like to do. My approach to religion is just the opposite. It’s based pretty much on pleasure, and my book ends with the discussion of bliss, which is pleasure and being in the right place of living the life that you want to live and living with people in a way that is satisfying and deep. a Read the complete unabridged version of this interview online at Edgemagazine.net.

connecting with rhythms of nature

We settle in to the morning.

Chores. We used to call them chores.

Feeding the birds at the songbird feeder is really not much of a chore. The meadowlarks fill in silent parts of our summer soundtrack, and we give them seeds to nurture their song. Pretty good deal.

Our big old black walnut tree releases its burden later on in the year, and buckets get filled with tangy flavor. Now, the buckets hang in the grove on maple tree pegs. A few drips at a time. Maple trees and black walnut trees share wisdom with us — the wisdom of timelessness.

Time is like a shipping box that life comes in. We unpack our mornings and recycle the box into the wood fire that warms our evenings.

Truth is, we live in rhythms of nature.

The sun climbs around the sky, and the moon partners with the stars. How we dance to those rhythms is up to us. They can be slow or fast. The hard-driving, heavy rock ’n’ roll of a raucous summer rainstorm usually gives way to a slow dance with a wraparound high pressure cell.

When nature wakes up in the spring, you have to be ready to take in the aroma.

The full frontal olfactory assaults of irises, peonies and roses come later, but the rhubarb reminds you early on that your taste buds better be ready, too. The earth

itself loves to be turned over and is hungry for more seeds (though Monsanto gives it serious digestive problems). Breezes keep busy by introducing old pine friends to new deciduous ones.

Nature is loudest in the fall. Blazing maple reds, blinding birch yellows, and outrageous oak oranges scream out from the treetops in a deafening chorus to those of us who love to listen. The robust ripened life of autumn is our best chance to take nature into our being and digest its gifts of nurturing wisdom. The bounty of knowledge on just about everything we need to know to be good stewards of the planet is available to us in the fall. Nature lays it out pretty plain: We hear, dance to, watch, and love the rhythms we were all born into, and a happy coexistence is assured. If we don’t?

Oh, well, better luck next time.

Nature dreams a lot in the winter, at least in Minnesota. Winds like to play in the snow and cover everything with blankets. Our part, as thin-skinned thought-filled animals, is to interpret those dreams and figure out what the future holds. a Rev. Richard W. PADDLING HOME TO MYSELF

I sat floating 40 feet from shore, heart pounding out of my chest, my dog happily eating the snack of canned cat food I had used to entice him into the canoe, wondering why I ever thought a solo trip in the BWCA was a good idea.

“What was I thinking? This is potentially quite dangerous. I haven’t camped or canoed in many years. I have a terrible sense of direction. Friends and family told me I was crazy to do my first trip to the BWCA on my own. And-I-think-there-are-eels-in there!!!”

The day was exquisite. Bright July sun, a scattering of clouds which ameliorated the intensity of the heat from time to time. A perfect Minnesota day. After a few more panic-soaked minutes, I paddled back to shore. I got out of the canoe, pulled it up, let the dog run wild, sat down on a rock, now full-on crying. Foremost in my mind was the fear of actually going through with the trip, and secondarily, I began to anticipate the shame and embarrassment of telling people that I had chickened out of the big adventure I had been looking so forward to for months.

Suddenly a van pulled up from one of those hundreds of north country outfitters. An elderly couple got out with the driver, and I watched the three of them pull the canoe off the top of the van and load it up with their packs. The couple waved to the driver who smiled and said, “See you here in five days.” The driver, an athletic, strong-looking woman maybe my own age or a little older then took a moment to stop and look at me sitting there on the rock, canoe loaded, dog wandering, going nowhere.

She asked, “Are you all right?”

I responded half tearfully that I was scared and having second thoughts about going out. And she said, “Well, if there were anything I could do for you, I would. But this is up to you. I think you can do it.” She smiled, not at all comfortingly, and drove off.

I hadn’t originally intended for this trip to be a solo journey.

Having never experienced the boundary waters, I wanted to see what all the talk was about. I had tried to enlist friends and family, but the practicality of modern life and schedules and work proved too difficult to overcome, and it had become clear as day that this was a journey I needed to take alone; I was being offered an opportunity to embrace my deepening relationship with myself. As I became used to the idea, I was excited and curious as to what an adventure like this was going to teach me. In preparation for the trip, I was surprisingly fearless. I prepared by going to a seminar on boundary water camping, and I learned paddling techniques and camping skills from countless YouTube videos. Which is why my little panic attack so caught me off guard.

And as I sat on the rock watching myself cry like a baby, it hit me.

The strong and awesome outfitter woman was absolutely correct. It all is really up to me. This is my Life. Am I going to walk straight into it or am I going to watch from the sidelines, or in this case, the shoreline? The fear rising in me had nothing to do with my physical safety or paddling skills, but was about being utterly alone with myself for the first time in a very long time. The fear was about being present in my relationship with myself, and apparently it was pretty scary. How is it that we all seem to be afraid to know ourselves, really know ourselves? Clearly this moment in nature was a gift being offered to me as a thoroughly juicy opportunity for growth in my spiritual awakening — if I chose to accept it.

I got up, loaded the pup back into the canoe, and pushed off, now crying the big round tears that came from the opened-up place of acceptance and joy. With another breath, I felt myself let go even more, and then I took a good look around me. As if on cue, the tall grasses lining the perimeter of Lake One opened up and gestured their silent invitation. The trees pointed me in the right direction and I allowed myself to be present to an infinite sense of love, belonging and peace.

RECEIVING LESSONS IN NATURE

Natural surroundings provide us with opportunities to be closer to the Creator and creation. Sitting in places of beauty among trees, near water, prairies, deserts or on ocean shores, our souls can resonate with the vibrations of these specific places. Almost weekly, I am guided to places in nature where I connect with Divine Spirits.

I enjoy the woods along the Platte River in Nebraska. There, in a small, natural amphitheater, fallen trees provide seating, animals make their homes, and I like to sit and invite

Spirits to join me. Archangels, Shamans and Saints, and my personal guides, let themselves become known to me here, my sacred place.

Here, I sit as an open receiver.

I ask for a vortex to surround us. Within it I am able to speak out loud without disturbance to or from other people. The Divine Messengers are unique in voice, tone and their general topics. Recording these channeled lessons in the natural setting may not have sound-stage quality, but they present a greater gift, the audible or energetic transmission of nature’s sounds. Bird songs, wind

rustling through leaves and splashing water positively influence those who listen to the messages. Lessons about the butterflies, trees and other natural elements are given with love for our treasured planet.

TWO FEATHERS AND A CONNECTION SO DEAR

Recently a young woman named Karyn came to visit Minnesota. Her career brought her back here. She had been my daughter Jenni’s nanny. They were five years apart in age so they really were friends, even went to the same school.

Karyn and I had set up a day and time to meet at a restaurant in Minneapolis. I was so very excited to see Karyn, because when Jen was 14 we moved to Central Minnesota and we had lost track of Karyn.

Jen died in 2003, and that left such a big hole in my life. As I awoke the day when I was to see Karyn again after such a long time, I spoke to Jen saying, “Won’t it be great to see her, Jenni?

I wonder how she looks and what her life has turned out to be?”

I always meditate to get my day started right. I meditated on the patio that day and felt refreshed and so very happy. I even heard the cardinals and robins singing.

On my drive into the Cities, I thought of the old days and especially on what a hard life Karyn and her brothers and sisters had had. She never told us that they went to bed hungry, with no dinner. Our family always liked to invite as many of the kids as possible to eat at our home, because they were great kids. It was fun to feel like we had a large family around the table again, never realizing that they were so hungry.

Those years were when we would go for walks with the kids and do little things along the way, like pick up feathers, rocks, pretty stones and really neat things. I didn’t know they meant so much to them.

When I got to the restaurant I sat in the car for a moment and thought of Jenni and how I missed her. Wondering what had happened to her on her journey. As I got out of the car and began to lock it, a black feather with a white tip drifted down onto the hood. I looked above and saw no birds flying overhead, and none were even nearby. I picked up the feather and examined it. You see, Jen was one-quarter Cherokee, so for me this was a sign that Jen was giving me a blessing, “Heads

Being in nature on a regular basis allows me to feel the cycles of life in a real way. Walking a trail by the light of a full moon, asking mosquitoes to go elsewhere in sweltering heat, observing deer walk peacefully under fall colors, feeling the velvet firmness of a mound of moss, these are all privileges that Creator has given to each of us.

But not many in the modern world choose to connect with our natural and spiritual world simultaneously. Without motor noise, earplugs delivering music, devices delivering information,

I had a great time with Karyn. I showed her pictures of Jen and told her what happened to us after we had moved from Champlin. She told me about her husband and children in South Carolina and we looked at her pictures. We spoke of her career and of how she had grown into such a beautiful woman.

She had to get back to her meeting, so we said goodbye and left each other with a huge hug and the promise to see each other next year if possible.

I smiled and realized that I had that good feeling in my core. Seeing the sunshine and blue skies, I walked to my car still savoring our meeting, and then my thoughts changed. I began thinking of my drive back home through the afternoon traffic. We all know what that feels like!

I unlocked my car, and as I turned to get into the car, I looked up at the tree I had parked under and saw another a black feather with a white tip drift down. I looked up and again saw nothing above the car, and I didn’t see anything unusual around the tree. Now, one feather was awesome, but two seemed out of the ordinary!

My “ah-ha” moment was realizing that my connection to my daughter was well and in working order and was validated. Jen had left me an angel note — two feathers — one for me and one for her, a remembrance of that beautiful day.

The asking I bring forth from within me is always this: “Let me see what I cannot see with my eyes. Let me hear what I cannot hear with my ears.”

Ask Spirit to meet you there. Then listen to the wind, the birds, and water. See the various shades of color.

HEALING WITH NATURE

by Penny Johnson Whenever I need to find my serenity I try to find a park that suits my mood.

Everything in nature has a different energy signature and feel. I try to find the right setting to help me heal. This is sometimes much easier in the spring through the fall season.

In the winter, though, I try to find a conservatory to visit or a florist whose energy I enjoy. It’s amazing how quickly the calming energy can engulf you. It

starts to allow you to think of solutions that have been out of reach for days. Suddenly, everything becomes clearer and so much simpler. The problems that seemed so overwhelming suddenly are put into perspective just by being closer to nature.

The stress that’s been overwhelming me for days is now put at bay. The writing starts to flow more easily. Different ideas start to come to mind when before it was nothing but static. Even by just bringing in some branches and watching them start to bud brings in the warmth of nature.

In the fall, I’ve gathered up some acorns so that during the winter months, I’ll have the acorns to remind me of the nice big oaks

that are near the river where I like to take my walks. When I’m outside, it allows me to be a kid again and drink in all the smells of each season. Embodying Spirit: 6 Ways to Reconnect in Nature

by Gregory Ripley When we think of meditation, prayer and other ways of getting in touch with spirit, we often think of turning inward and shutting out the outside world. This can certainly be helpful when getting established in these types of practices, and it certainly has its place, but many mind-body disciplines allow us to get in touch with our inner selves through the body. A few well-known practices come to mind, such as yoga and t’ai chi.

But we can take this one step further if we expand our paradigm, expand our circle of awareness. Mind-body becomes mind-bodynature. Why should we do any of these things in Nature? A growing body of research tells us that spending time in natural settings improves our psychological and physical health and sense of wellbeing. That is so, science tells us, because of the increased sensory stimulus from which we evolved, essential oils released from trees and plants, and the natural electromagnetic frequency of the Earth itself.

Of course, all of these can be considered as different forms of energy, or Qi from a Traditional Chinese medical perspective. Some of these practices are beneficial practiced indoors, but why not take full advantage of our surroundings to increase the beneficial effects?

Here are six easy ways to reconnect while spending time in nature: ➤ Go for a walk. Walking meditation can be slow and formal, like in the Zen tradition, but it can also be spontaneous and natural.

Anything from a walk in the park to a backpacking trip. You’ll relax and give your spirit some peace. To enhance your mind-body-nature connection, spend at least a little time every day barefoot. ➤ Sit. Find a spot in a natural setting that feels comfortable to you, perhaps your back yard, a park or the woods. Sit down and quiet your mind and listen and watch. At first, you may notice very little going on, but as your spirit becomes calm, the world around you will slowly come alive. If you need a more active version of this, birdwatching or stargazing are great. ➤ Hug a tree. I know, sounds a little cheesy right? Turns out it works. Tree Qigong can be performed while “hugging” a tree or it can be done just standing in front of a tree. Stand in a relaxed comfortable manner and visualize any energy blockages or problems in your body, whether physical or emotional, as dark smoky stuff. Gather it and send it down through the soles of your feet into the earth, where it can be composted and become nourishment.

Then you can begin sharing energy with the tree. Smile. Again imagine your energy going through your soles into the earth then into the tree. Energy then cycles out from the tree. Visualize it entering your body through the top of your head and washing down through your body again, energizing you and revitalizing all your internal organs. Smile. ➤ T’ai chi. I love practicing t’ai chi and qigong, especially when I get to do them outdoors or at least some place with a view. Enjoy the benefits of these practices combined with the experience spent in nature. ➤ Gathering. This could be “wildcrafting,” gathering edible plants or medicinal herbs, or it could simply be finding treasures like a beautiful stone, leaf or pine cone to bring home with you.

Enjoy your natural treasure inside your home to remind you of the calm and peace you experience when in nature. ➤ Build a snowman but take it one step further. While there is still snow on the ground, create something that you find spiritually inspiring — something as simple as a cross or a spiral or a yin/yang symbol. Make a snow Buddha or St. Francis. If you’re up for a challenge, I’d love to see you do the Last Supper! The only limits are your imagination (and perhaps your artistic ability). No worries, the quality doesn’t matter here. SALVATION BEYOND THE SLIDING DOORS Spirit Leaves

It is winter, and a fringe of pinkish white light clings to night’s hem. I gaze upward through sliding doors at a dew-encrusted moon and feel a hollow aloneness, until a gentle moan rises on a wave of unsettled air. I realize with a chill it is Song of the Wind. I need to open my heart and consciousness to hear her tell me things. She reminds me that the sadness I sometimes feel is from them — the spirits of the Ancient Ones.

Thanks to a gifted psychic, I learned that one of my Spirit Helpers is a Native American named Song of the Wind. She’s an enlightened being who makes her presence known via a soulpenetrating chant, a haunting cadence rising on the inky night air. Song of the Wind’s voice could easily be interpreted as a mournful winter cry; to me, it signals comfort from a sacred friend from a dimension I can only dream of.

Everything the First People once loved has faded. Theirs was a place brimming with deer, owls, badgers, eagles, sage, sweetgrass, and plenty of firewood. Pure water cascaded down from the mountains. This place, crisscrossed with roads and wires, was once named “The Big Woods.”

Now it is “Minnesota,” and many of its beloved trees have been felled to make way for square boxes spilling over hillsides. Song of the Wind wants me to remember. Perhaps I lived here among the people before; I don’t know. My guides told me I have the ability to “quantum leap” into past lives and that I do this in dreams; yet, I have no independent waking memory of past lives. What I do know is that I long to feel the earth under my feet. I feel connected to her, and to all of life.

For months, it’s been below zero. I’ve lived out much of my spoiled existence in the padded comfort of the great indoors. I have two recliners and an electric fireplace. I snooze on a pillow top mattress. Water rises through PVC pipe. My feet rarely touch the soil; instead, they romp across a sea of padded carpet, buoyed by insulation in layers. I’ve grown indolent, lazy and forgetful — and I realize that the natural world outside is my salvation.

The brisk air of winter makes me come alive

again, stunning my skin into icy awareness. A crow calls from a stately pine, atop which he’s recently alighted. From his beak dangles a large, juicy object of some kind. How does he find food with all the insects and tiny creatures gone, asleep in icy burrows? The river is a frozen lace of layers stiff and delicate as bridal slips; water beneath it has stilled. Trees icily rock and groan in the stirring wind. Amid the torpid beauty that surrounds me, I think of the First People of this land.

The Mandans, Cedric has told me more than once, were a happy and peaceful people. They lived in Earth lodges. Since their homes were built right into the Earth, they stayed cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They felt a part of the Earth herself, and of the life that surrounded them. There were no such things as “artifacts.” The People made objects of utility; yet, everything they created was also beautiful and reflected their identity as a Nation.

I have created for myself a polarized existence out of which I strive to evolve. I seek to transcend a number of perceived separations: my Higher Self from my ego self; the Great Spirit and my individual soul; ethereal planes of existence beyond and my dense, third-dimensional liffe.

This month’s Edge topic forced me to confront another seeming separation: the world indoors, and the Universe outside. Let me not deceive myself: I am not going to get there from an arm chair. However well-intentioned, I must pull myself out by a large crozier and draw myself towards the vibrant world outside. Alone in a grove of trees, by a river or lake, I can listen more intently to the compassionate voices of the Ancient Ones, letting me know the journey is much simpler than I imagine.
