Afterlife Awareness Conference coming to St. Louis in June

T

he Afterlife Education Foundation will host its Third Annual Afterlife Awareness Conference June 21-23 at the Sheraton Westport Plaza Hotel in St. Louis. The conference will feature workshops and presentations by a nationallyrecognized consortium of researchers, educators and counselors in the fields of thanatology, bereavement, theology and paranormal studies.

The conference was organized to meet the need for a national discussion on the metaphysical aspects of death, dying and bereavement, including after-death communication, out-of-body experience, near-death experience, hospice care and grief processing. This year’s roster of presenters includes some of leading names in the field, including Dr. Raymond Moody, author of the breakthrough book, Life After Life; neurosurgeon Eben Alexander, M.D., (recently featured on the cover of Newsweek magazine); Dr. Ken Doka, senior consultant to the Hospice Foundation of America, and many other noted luminaries in end-of-life care and afterlife research. The conference will also include presentations and gallerystyle readings by several acclaimed psychic mediums.

“This conference is an extraordinary opportunity to look at death and bereavement in a new light,” explains Terri Daniel, president of the Afterlife Education Foundation, the non-profit educational organization that sponsors the yearly event. “Our audience is made up of hospice workers, scientists, therapists, clergy, spiritual seekers, the bereaved and the curious. We’ve all found, throughout our years of practice, that understanding how consciousness continues after the death of the body is a key to providing wisdom and comfort for the bereaved and overcoming the fear of death.”

ore than 1.3 million people have taken the time to watch a three-minute TED talk delivered by corporate brand strategist Stacey Kramer. In 2009, a CAT scan revealed a golf-ball-sized tumor in her brain. A year later, she was speaking to audiences about her experience, saying, “The next time you face something that’s unexpected, unwanted and uncertain, consider that it just may be a gift.”

Kramer, who doesn’t wish a brain tumor for anyone, identified gifts that resulted from her diagnosis: Her family was brought together; she felt loved and appreciated like never before; she recalibrated what was most important in her life; the experience redefined her sense of spirituality and faith; and her life had new meaning.

Such is the nature of transformation. We all face challenges. They come and go in our lives. We judge the seriousness of each one differently, based upon our perspective at the time. What matters is how we face the impediments that come before us.

Producer-director-actor Ben Affleck, on accepting the Oscar this year for his film Argo, said, “It doesn’t matter how you get knocked down in life. That’s going to happen. All that matters is you’ve got to get up.”

Complete faith No better example exists than the incredible outlook expressed by Bobby Johnson, husband of noted Twin Cities psychic Tiffany Johnson, who suffered a stroke in mid-January [please see story on facing page ]. On March 9, Bobby wrote this to family and friends: “…Both Tiffany and I find a great deal of comfort knowing that she is able to heal herself. I have complete faith she will restore her Light and shine brighter than ever before.

She is the captain of her soul – and if you like her now, you will love her later.”

As sad as this sudden twist of fate was for Tiffany and her family, what remains is an extraordinary display of love and courage, of what is truly possible when we’re pushed to the edge. Bobby and Tiffany are not mired in the past, dwelling on what was taken away, but on what is being revealed in the moment.

Their love for each other is being redefined, and recalibrated as Stacey Kramer says, and their souls are being transformed in the process.

Recovery is possible As I write this, it is the day after Tiffany’s third surgery. It went well, and soon she will be leaving the hospital to focus on rehabilitation.

What comes to mind is my recent interview with Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D., author of My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey, who emphasized that when stroke victims are treated as though they can recover, they are more inclined to do just that. She is committed to a state of gratitude: “I always encourage people to take the first five minutes in the morning and actually think about your body and say, ‘Thank you!’ There are a group of cells inside of the brain stem that are responsible for you waking up in the morning, so take those moments to say, ‘Wow! I’m awake! I’m awake! I’m alive! Wow! I get another day!’ Because there are people that did not have that opportunity today.”

For all of those who find themselves recovering right now from unexpected illness – including the men and women injured in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan – be strong and know that more people than you realize wish you a speedy and full recovery. a

Benefit to support psychic Tiffany Johnson’s recovery

T

iffany Johnson, known to many around the country as Psychic Tiff, experienced a stroke on January 18. She is a psychic, author, speaker and healer who has been active in the Twin Cities and national metaphysical and paranormal communities for many years. She has appeared on television and many radio shows, and Tiffany has travelled the country to holistic and paranormal events. Tiffany, 40, was in optimal health.

According to doctors, the stroke she suffered — called an arterial dissection — was the worst kind a person can have. She underwent a long surgery to save her life, and she has had additional surgeries to bring her back to stability after massive brain swelling and no movement on her left side. The prognosis was grim and doctors have shared that she is a miracle to survive at all.

After a long road to stability in ICU, Tiffany was moved to the Rehabilitation unit where she is doing daily therapies to recover her movement, speech, and basic everyday skills. Her recovery will be long and arduous.

Tiffany has always been a larger than life, bold, vibrant personality, with a huge heart and compassion for her friends and colleagues. In true Tiffany fashion, she is fighting. She gains strength every day and literally is creating miracles with each step. Her sass and bold personality has not been lost. Even the 24/7 hospital staff attending to her recovery is taken by her bright light. Her husband of almost 20 years, Bobby, is with her each step of the way, as well as her parents and other family members.

This experience has changed Tiffany’s life path. Their financial needs will be overwhelming as the days of moving her to an adapted home,

vehicle, and ongoing medical care will grow.

It’s time for our community to come together to support Tiffany and her family on their new journey.

Higher Brain Living: A great impact on my life

My Higher Brain Living experience completely changed the trajectory of not only my life, but my business. The only difference is that I say, “It turned my life Up Side Up!” Thanks to colleague Tammy Ritcey for pointing out the distinction.

So what is Higher Brain Living (HBL) and how has it impacted my life? First, I’ll mention the three-part series on Edge Talk Radio for you to reference and listen to in the archives. There you will find a much deeper discussion on the many facets of HBL. Higher Brain Living is a gentle touch technique that creates a powerful surge of energy to your prefrontal cortex (higher brain/third eye). Typically the lower brain, which lives at the base of the skull, hijacks all the oxygen. With this technique, energy flows to and through this area, giving the lower brain the oxygen it needs, but allowing the rest to flow up and over the brain to the prefrontal cortex. That’s the distinction and the secret. The beauty, and one of the most important things, is that when you are in your higher brain, you are automatically connected to your heart. Living from this space is an empowering way to live!

Let’s make it real and look at a few of the changes I have seen in my life. The second of the three-part Higher Brain Living series on Edge Talk Radio describes how HBS works in four dimensions: Mind, Body, Relationship, Environment.  Mind — Inner experience of emotions, thoughts, awareness, consciousness. My awareness of my thoughts and how they play a role in my life have impacted how I show up in a more dynamic and powerful way. I am much more tuned into my guidance.  Body — Physical body, what you put into the body, exercise, posture. This is the dimension where I first noticed a shift. My weight decreased (without trying). I make a juice or reach for kombucha much more frequently than previously. Purchasing organic food has become an easier choice. And my self-talk around exercise has become supportive and

riving into town, slung from one muddied rut to another, the steering wheel, like a wild horse, barely led by hands and mind, a voice on the radio announces the Dalai Lama’s decision to resign his role as the political representative of the Tibetan people.

The moderator urges listeners to call in and share what the Dalai Lama means to us, and I muse silently about what I would say were I to call in (an action not possible in reality, as there is no cell phone coverage between the center of Adamant and Morse Farm).

Before words or thoughts can gather, tears fill my eyes and my chest becomes too small to contain the answer to the moderator’s question. Sadness and gratitude, fullness and loss. Awareness of his and my mortality. Gratitude for all this man has given, with an integrity, a lightness of being, a depth of understanding, that makes it possible for someone like me, as rutted and muddied as this Vermont spring road, to know that it is possible to break free, to become… enlightened. Not some rarified state of bliss, not the escaping of being human, of neuroses, of the inheritance of this all too difficult melding of reptile, cat and frontal cortex…three universes that miraculously manage to allow us to walk, breathe and be, and yet have, like Vermont’s communications systems, some serious connectivity issues, but the liberation of seeing, feeling and tasting ourselves as who we truly are.

Of awakening. Of inhabiting ourselves fully.

Two grouse pause in the middle of the road, blink their eyes at me, and as we regard each other I experience the utter emptiness of mind that so many of us long to inhabit — the respite from figuring out, planning, worrying, shoring up, remembering, wishing. The essence of grouseness, it comes naturally to them. After a minute’s paralysis, something only a grouse could understand (if they understood anything) prompts them to move, and they zoom across the remaining space like Wiley Coyote.

gentle, rather than filled with that horrific word, should — indicating that we are beating ourselves up when we don’t do something we think we should.  Relationship — Family, friends, beliefs, significant other, co-workers. The biggest and most joyful change in this dimension is I have my daughter back! My facilitator said this is a direct reflection on how I show up and interact with her. She responds to me much differently.

Her interactions are no longer short, abrasive and mean. She calls just to say hi, share something important or ask a question! Ah! That alone is worth every penny and mile driven for my sessions. (If you are in the Twin Cities, you are so fortunate now, as you have choices here, in your area, to receive sessions. When I chose to invest in the 22-step Higher Brain Living system, that choice came with a six-hour drive to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the expense of a hotel stay — and I would not have had it any other way.)  Environment — Finances, job, school, home, places of worship. My business has expanded, and I am now looking at a completely different schedule. Higher Brain Living has “taken over” my business. While I still offer Soul Mentoring and private sessions, I find myself more frequently suggesting people explore HBL with me first before working with me in another capacity. I naturally bring in the mentoring and other gifts I have. I consider it a value added for the client, as do they.

Remember to be patient and have faith even when you can’t see results yet!

Using the phrase “I am…” is a powerful way to begin stating your intentions. This places the power of Love abundantly within your heart’s desires so you open the door to all magical possibilities for yourself and your child.  Allow Inspired Action — Once you are clear on your intentions, be open to taking steps that support your vision and be willing to receive spiritual support to ease into your new mindset. Whatever you feel inspired to do, just be willing to take that first step and the rest will keep presenting itself in Divine right timing.

The CranioSacral Experience you invite your body to release and rel ax itself

hat is a CranioSacral session like, and how does it differ from massage?

A CranioSacral session is one of the most deeply profound modalities of massage I have ever had the pleasure of receiving, as well as giving.

First, from the receiving perspective: With massage, your muscles are continually being manipulated with the intent to relax.

With CranioSacral, you invite your body to release and relax itself. You commune and listen to your body, and let it guide you towards healing and embracing wellness.

Sometimes the body is not ready to release an area, and this can be for a wide variety of reasons. To remove or release a blockage before the body is ready can cause great distress to the body. Both the practitioner and recipient need to listen and communicate with the body to determine to what extent it is ready to release.

For being so seemingly light of touch and subtle, to me, it can seem more relaxing than sleep. Like a meditative state, it’s almost trance-like. I find myself being able to delve into my body, into the cells themselves, and reach beyond into the nothingness, and then find the energy that fills and flows within my body. Because it is about listening to the body, and letting the body guide and direct the practitioner, every session is unexpected and different. A CranioSacral session leaves me feeling quiet, calm, and centered, yet very awakened and alert.

A deep meditation On a physical body level, you unwind.

Blockages unrecognized normally are opened and cleared. Mentally, receiving a session is similar to a deep meditation in which you are acutely aware and all that exists is the present moment to moment.

Emotionally, you can listen and hear the messages that your body has stored within it for you. Spiritually, you are given an opportunity to connect to your Inner Physician, that part of you that knows exactly what ails you and what you need to heal.

On a purely physical basis, one of my favorite parts of CranioSacral work is the amazing relief it can give for jaw pain.

Anyone who has TMD, TMJ, or just clenches their jaw during sleep or stress, understands how awful this pain can be. CranioSacral has some marvelous inter-oral techniques that can unwind and release a tight jaw. It’s wonderful to experience especially after a visit to the dentist, or a long night of clenching and grinding in your sleep. Many

am proud to have had a conversation with Jill Rae Faulkner about feminine empowerment retreats. Jill is a host of such retreats, as well as an intuitive reader and healer who studied with Dietrich Klinghard, M.D., Ph.D., at The Institute of Neurobiology on Autonomic Response Testing, Energy Psychology 101 and Applied Psycho Neurobiology. She is a Serenity Vibration certified healer and is certified in Pranic Healing by Mater Choa Kok Sui and certified in two levels of Distant Energy Healing (Yeun Method) under Barbara Robbins.

I spoke with Jill about the importance of retreats and how women can empower themselves through their feminine nature.

Jill, tell us a little about yourself.

Jill Rae Faulkner: I’ve always felt that my spiritual path has been

to heal humanity. As a child, I could see energy in people and I would always try to lift that energy if it was dark or low. As an adult, I made a conscious decision to take the path of healing.

I went into a deep sleep for three days and came out with an ability to look into people’s souls and shine a little light on their path. That’s why I call myself a soul reader.

What do people need healing with these days?

JRF: People have forgotten how magnificent they are. They’ve

lost touch with their gifts and their power. We plug into emotional drains and keep feeding them. This takes us away from ourselves.

Self-love is so important. When you love yourself, no one can take your power or suck you emotionally. You radiate with sovereignty.

You are saying self-love is important, but if you are not feeling very loving of yourself, how can you achieve it?

JRF: Make a journey inside and look at your truth. What is

taking away from you? Our world is so seductive. There are many exciting things to watch on TV. We are pulled in every direction.

Be your own island first. Mother Earth can give us so much. We can get energy from being present with the earth, sun and moon.

We need to have conversations with each.

To share them with each other is very powerful. I remember being in a group with women that were ages 16 to 91. I was so amazed by the wisdom that came out of that group.

The synergy of women is powerful.

As women, we have so many abilities that are innate and in order to feel our sovereignty, we need to recognize these powers. These innate strengths are our power to forgive, our power to nurture, our intuitiveness. We have the divine warrior and the divine feminine within us.

The divine feminine is a soft being.

There is no hardness or aggression to her. She stands in her power. She is intuitive.

You got away from your intuitive nature for a while. Tell us about what brought you back.

JRF: I remembered having intuitive abili-

ties and I realized that I had turned my back to them. So I began a little practice of going inside and connecting with Source. I prayed. All of that did something for me. It gave back tenfold.

Life got thick and dense without these abilities. I realized that the synchronicities of my life had stopped and I missed them. They were such a little dessert!

We are multi-dimensional beings. We have just forgotten this innate ability within us. Connect yourself with source, pray, meditate.

That is why retreats are so valuable. They are about investing in your own life. It’s important to have this as a priority, to spend your time and your energy to make your life better.

JRF: We are like herd animals. We’ve lost

our tribes. We need to come together as a group and learn from each other’s life experiences. These experiences are our greatest teachers.

Retreats are important to allow us to stop and hear that still small voice inside because it has a lot to say. We have not listened to that voice for a long time. a

Lights in the Sky

hen I think of a spiritual day trip, often I remember my trips in the evening, or even at night. Sometimes, I climb in the car, tune into my guidance, and just go. Each street crossing is another opportunity to test the direction I am receiving: left, right, or forward. Sometimes I’ll hear an internal voice, sometimes I just get a sense, sometimes it’s like my muscles just know, and my mind catches up later. And sometimes I’m not quite certain, or I doubt my ability to perceive accurate directions at all.

One time my day was complete, I had a few hours before bed, and still had some energy. I got in the car, followed the guidance, and felt the direction to stop at some open field out west of the Cities, where I had never been before. I walked out onto the field, recognizing it as a fairway on a golf course. I was in awe of the stars, so clear this beautiful dark night. I stood there and prayed, rejoicing over the beauty, and the peace, and the awesome night sky. I prayed for peace in the world, and a peaceful transition for the world and humanity in this time when spiritual life comes into the mainstream. I prayed until I was done, then asked my guidance, is there more that I could help with?

No, they said, but if you wish, there is one more journey you could do this night.

My energy was still okay, so I said, “Lead on.” This time, more confusing turns and I was totally lost. The last turn was onto a dead end street, and down a hill, with houses on both sides of the street. Not a park this time. I wasn’t even sure this was

a safe place! But this was the place, my muscles told me. So I got out of the car.

It was totally pitch black. With the head lights off, I couldn’t tell where the street and curb would meet. I just walked gingerly up the middle of the street for about 15 seconds. Then I saw a light coming through the base of the trees in someone’s yard. Just a glimmer at first. I couldn’t make sense of it. As I walked, it became brighter, and stayed in the same direction, even in the next yard up the street. It wasn’t till the third yard that I almost laughed out loud, recognizing finally that it was a moon rise, clear and bright and beautiful.

I was stunned. How could the guides, whoever they were I still don’t know, compute the timing and subjective positioning such that they could arrange my arrival at that particular location just moments before I would see the bright moon rise, through bumps and hills and trees in some peoples’ yards? It was awesome, beautiful, and beyond comprehension — yet, as undeniable as a predictable moonrise over Lake Calhoun. They even told me ahead that something was coming. Could they compute how long I would wait at a traffic signal, or wait for cars at a stop sign, or know the pressure of my foot on the accelerator?

A Day of Sacred Silence

An 11-day Vipassana silent retreat in the California Sierra Nevada! A vision quest in the Mojave Desert! Invite me to consider a spiritual day trip and I’m journeying to an exotic locale where I’ll adhere to an extended routine of spiritual rigor.

Since escaping adolescence, I have had one foot on a path of enlightenment and the other tangled in undergrowth of modern neurosis. My wandering mind creates fluctuating levels of discipline, so I can’t truthfully brag about years of yoga, decades of meditation, nor the many books I’ve read. I am blessed to have sat with great souls, visited spiritual realms, and received guidance from ascended masters. And I am still challenged by circumstance and how to tend to my inner wounds.

I want to share with you a recent marvelous discovery: One can have profound experiences by declaring a Day of Sacred Silence. Spend 24 hours not speaking, at rest in the familiar rooms of one’s own home. It’s simple, affordable AND limitless. This simple ritual is filled with unexpected, spiritual gifts.

To prepare: Make a list of what you’ll do on this special day and be alert to avoid activities that distract you from yourself.

My list has two columns: “What I Will Do on my Sacred Day of Silence” and, “What I Will Not Do.” The “Will Not Do” column contains activities such as watching TV, surfing the internet, cell phone activity, shopping, driving, and home improvement projects. The “Will Do” column includes ways to return me to myself and to Presence: reading, meditation, yoga, listening to Pema Chodron audio-books, art-making, and inner-kid work. Keep this page handy, as there are strong tendencies to drift back to the norm; my hands were on the phone before I realized what I was doing.

In preparation, make sure that you have enough food in the house to avoid the need to shop. Advise those in your life that you’ll be unavailable so that they will understand your sudden absence. If you share a home with other people, this sacred activity is still possible — in fact, they may want to join you!

After the second such day, I realized I had omitted a very important item from my “Will Do” list: Just Be! Laughing, I realized that this was typical of how I operate.

The stars sparkled bright, the soft wind whispered, and Moon winked as I presented myself to the awaiting universe. I flew around a little, staying close to the turret, the warm air suspending me. Reacquainting myself with old friends, I heard my instructor ask us to open our eyes. I knew if I did, I’d have to leave where I was. I didn’t want to and kept them closed, feeling one with the universe.

She asked us to wiggle our fingers and toes, to open and close our jaws, and to move our heads from side to side. High above the rest of the class, I felt obligated to return. I tucked a little of Moon inside my heart and came back to my mat.

With each guided imagery class, I’m ahead of the instructor. Tonight, I knew there was a red, round door before she told us and that the

I looked at her for a moment and just smiled.

“Yes,” I simply said.

The following is my conversation with Aingeal, speaking with us from her home in San Diego.

Tell us a bit about your presentation upcoming in Mankato?

Aingeal Rose O’Grady: I will be the keynote

speaker on Friday night, and it will last three hours. It will be half lecture, and the second half of the evening I’m going to be opening up the Akashic records to the audience.

Is The Time of Change the first book that you have written that deals specifically with the Akashic records?

ARO: It is. That came about because we

started doing group sessions in Ireland in 2010, because so many people had questions about the world and and about 2012.

We decided to hold a group session so

That’s really a different way of saying that we create our own reality by what we focus on.

One of the points that you were making in an earlier interview was that there is an array of probabilities and we choose the reality by what we focus on, as well as the timeline that we choose.

ARO: Yes, and to go along with the whole

people could come and ask spiritual questions and questions about the world, not personal questions. Once we started doing that, I was surprised that it was Source itself that was answering us. That became the basis for A Time of Change.

The second book coming out in November will be called The Nature of Reality, and it will feature transcripts from groups where people asked questions about reality and love and dreams and all sorts of things.

People ask all the time when I am doing readings, “Where does my personal choice come in or is this all just set up? Am I just a victim of what’s already been planned out for me?” How do you explain that?

ARO: People have asked me, “Do we have

a destiny?” I say, “Yes, you do, and no, you don’t.” I believe that the soul makes a contract before it’s born. What that means is that certain things will be arranged, and certain people will show up at particular times in your life to promote higher soul growth. They represent opportunity in these situations. Just because somebody presents an opportunity to you does not mean that you are going to choose the highest and best choice in all situations.

To me, the soul wants to have victories.

idea is that we have an infinite number of multi-dimensional selves. What that really means is that every thought we think creates another us someplace. So, imagine that we have millions of alternate selves out there and they’re all functioning in a particular potential reality because of the energy that we put into it. There are an infinite number of possibilities or timelines that we could travel down, and the same is true of the world. We could go to hell in a handbasket or we could move into paradise, and both of those realities are out there. Which train we decide to get on and which track we follow is where free will comes in.

In terms of our planet’s direction, how is that configured with regard to each person’s respective free will choice? Is it a combination of all our choices that determines the direction?

ARO: Yes, I find that mass consciousness

plays a huge part in which reality we create in the outer world. Now, let me just say, too, that somebody on his or her individual path can create a completely different reality than what is going on here. A lot of people travel interdimensionally and meet with their other selves. They go beyond our laws of physics.

I believe an individual can achieve great heights just by themselves. But what we experience here on the planet usually is the result of an agreement with the collective perception.

We had a discussion with Source last week, and I am going to be speaking about that in Mankato. Source was kind of scolding us, if you will, about how we were all accepting mediocrity. Look around.

People do not hold themselves to the highest standards. So if we create mediocrity continually, that is a problem. It really equates to love. If you really understood love, you would always hold yourself to the highest standards.

I believe that’s what was captured in that quote I found on your website, telling us that it’s not a time to be complacent. It really calls us into action and to be accountable, that we can’t look outside of ourselves and blame everybody else and wait for something to happen, that we have to create it within.

I love the concept that even though there is a mass consciousness that we certainly are impacted by, our individual free will and choice and focus can always override that.

ARO: It can, but I think what’s even better

to say is that you really become a conscious creator when you start looking at your own thoughts. It’s not just a matter of imagining something new. I believe there is a huge part of inner self-discovery where people really need to be examining their subconscious imprints. I think that’s a huge part of them being able to manifest what they really want in their lives. What happens is that you become less and less fearful of what could manifest in the outer world. As you know yourself, Cathryn, there are lots

It showed a picture of our Earth before it was solid. It was a mass of swirling white light. It called it The First Swirlings, and a group of spirit beings traveled to the new sphere to check it out, because Source told us that it delights in creation and it sends ministers or spirit beings to look at every new creation to see how it can evolve life there. So, that’s what these beings were doing. Many of those beings were us. We were those original spirit beings.

But then, suddenly, I saw a huge cosmic wave traveling through the galaxy, through universes, and it struck this sphere. As it did so, it knocked a big piece of it off and that piece began to shift out of its orbit, out of its original frequency. Through billions of years, it just kept kind of falling through space, coalescing and becoming more dense. That is called the Fallen Earth, and that’s what we’re on right now.

So, as it became more and more dense, it moved from the spiritual frequency to one of physical matter?

ARO: Yes. Because it slowed in its vibration,

it coalesced and actually became a planet that is considered to be under the Emerald Green Ray. But having said that, some of those spirit beings fell with it when it fell,

One of the topics in your book that really drew my attention was The Fall and how it influences us today. Can you speak a little bit about that?

ARO: Yes. I first need to preface it by

saying that people really need to imagine billions and billions and billions of years of our process. What I saw came to me the evening when the topic of the group was, “Who are we and why are we here?”

That was one of the most heavily attended events, and everybody who came hoped that Source would tell them individually why they were here. But, of course, when you ask Source a question, you are always

So now these spirits have two memories of themselves in their consciousness. One part remembers that they used to be spiritbased, that they lived in paradise and they could travel all over the place. Another piece identifies itself with the physical body and an individuated self and ego. Once those two concepts were in the spirit mind, it started to create duality.

This is the reason we’re in such conflict all the time, why we go back and forth between positive and negative thinking,

between wanting to go back home to wanting our egos satisfied. We’re in this perpetual conflict. Source told us that we have to make only one choice. We can’t keep going back and forth and expecting any sort of real growth. You have to choose your ultimate paradise self, and your Self actually remembers what that is.

Right now, if you are identifying with your body and you’re identifying with the ego self, you cells will replicate according to that command, but if you start choosing to identify with your paradise self, then all sorts of different chemicals start to be created and all sorts of expansion happens.

The way that we begin to shift our vibrational frequency is by holding that higher vision of what feels like our spiritual self that is separate from us, though it’s really the true self.

ARO: Yes. The problem we have had is that

other beings who were not highly evolved have come onto this planet. When the Earth densified, they found this to be quite a nice place to colonize, and they are still trying to keep that control. So, that’s also going on, and it’s really trying to keep us from remembering and then choosing. It is a fight we’re in.

So, how does that play out in the individual, with the struggle between negative and positive thoughts and embracing more of an evolved sense of being? How does that get internalized within us?

ARO: We’re programmed a lot when we are

growing up. We’re told a lot of things that aren’t true. We get the feeling that this is a hierarchy and that God is the king and we’re lowly servants of God. Right away, as children, we’re put in our place and told, “Don’t expect miracles to happen to you, because you’re not that special; we’re the authorities and we’re going to tell you the rules.” So, we’re lied to from the start.

Now that you’re identifying with a small ego self, then you start to go to school and people like you or don’t like you, so your self-image is either validated or it is crushed. For a lot of people, it’s crushed.

This negative self-talk really is the result of programming that is going on by authority figures and peers, because they don’t know what they are either.

You actually have to undo all of that, because your spirit self will always teach you who you are in your highest creation.

It will start to awaken the memory of you being a creative being, made after the creation itself. You really have to make a choice whether you want to validate your ego self. If you do, then you will be choosing things that to you make yourself look bigger. You’ll want success, you’ll want money, and you’ll want to keep all the material things in place.

ARO: Ego-driven goals, because you’re

trying to build a self that is really not based in Truth. So you have to do things to make it seem like it’s bigger than it really is. Unfortunately, that’s what a lot of people perceive as their identity. This is why they’re crushed if they lose material things. The truth is, though, that your spirit will always try to guide you toward loving yourself. It will uphold the highest standards for you, and at a point it will want you to choose the highest standards — not just for yourself, but for everybody.

It takes you completely away from the idea of smallness and inadequacy, to the fact that you are not only capable, but very powerful.

Responsibility now enters into the equation. A lot of people don’t want that, because if you understood that you are contributing to creating the quality of the world and everything around you, and yourself included, that’s a big responsibility.

It is, and it’s an accountability for every choice you make. You want to hold yourself accountable for what you are creating now within yourself and what you are putting out to the world.

ARO: Yes, and isn’t it interesting, that

every little thought and every little action, every little everything is accounted for.

It comes down to the smallest decision.

We get so caught up in major decisions that we have to make, and it really has to do with how we’re going to treat our dog in the morning. The story I always tell is that I can always tell my state of reverence by the way that I either am impatient when I take my dog out when he has to go to the bathroom or irritable because he is not going fast enough. If I am irritable with him, I know that I need to come in and do

my inner work and get right with myself, because I’m just going to be spreading that wave out in whatever interactions I have with self or others.

ARO: Yes, and how many times do we walk

by those plants that need watering and just ignore them, like they don’t care?

Or trash that’s on the ground. I have a hard time with people who have taken their ashtray of cigarettes and just toss them on the ground. It’s like coming into your house and throwing garbage all over. You get a real fine attunement to the rightness of everything around you and hold yourself accountable to contribute to that, I think.

ARO: Yes, because you really get a sense

of Divine order. I remember one time when I was working with the Tarot cards.

I was working with the Emperor card, and I knew at the highest level that it represented Divine order. Wabi-Sabi

Nurturing authenticity through this lens: Nothing lasts, nothing is finished, nothing is perfect Evolutionary Pagan

T

here are two types of initiation.

One is a ceremony, ritual or test that one must undertake to join a group or hold an office.

In Pagan culture, one usually commits to a group and the initiation is performed as a series of rites that highlight the transformation from seeker to dedicant to priesthood.

In shamanic cultures, initiation is seen as a real or symbolic brush with death that leaves one transformed with new insight.

When the shaman undergoes a traumatic experience, he or she becomes imbued with spiritual energy for having come close to death. Many pagan rituals center on this theme.

However, all too often when we have a traumatic experience, it becomes a source of woundedness. These wounds begin to dictate how we interact with the world. This is part of the appeal of pagan and shamanic traditions. For when you begin your journey of healing and empowerment, initiation becomes a source of validation that can be difficult to find elsewhere.

But what if you are like me, someone who has not found a group or specific tradition to draw from? How do you take your wounds and turn them into a source of pride or strength without that external person or group to validate you?

I would like to suggest that the paradigm shift is in looking at any trauma in life and seeing it as an initiatory experience. No one would be who they are if they had not experienced some form of adversity. If we see trauma as an initiation, a death of the old self and birth of the new, we see rites of passage everywhere. Any event can become

imbued with meaning if we simply allow ourselves to see it.

A concept that I have found to be incredibly helpful is that of wabi-sabi, a Japanese ascetic of beauty.

Wikipedia tells us this: “If an object or expression can bring about, within us, a sense of serene melancholy and a spiritual longing, then that object could be said to be wabi-sabi. (Wabi-sabi) nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is

finished, and nothing is perfect.”

To me, it means something that has been broken and put back together and is more beautiful now because of it. For example, you buy a vase and it breaks. You then glue the pieces back together, but you can still see the lines between the pieces. This makes the vase more beautiful because it now has a story, character and meaning.

In my own life, I have experienced a great amount of trauma. I have been physically abused, raped, manipulated, experienced disease, and faced my own death twice. I have contemplated suicide, moved across the country to escape my predicaments, and caused a fair amount of drama. It would be all too easy to let my past experiences and reactionary behaviors stop me from living the life I really want to live.

But in looking through the lens of wabi-sabi, my traumas become the fire that hardens the clay of potential. I could say I have been broken many times, or I could say that I have survived many times. I could see my wounds as a weakness, or I could say my scars give me strength. Seeing the wounds of my soul as a testament to my resilience is what allows me the confidence to stand in my truth and face my own demons.

I offer this as a gift to the community.

We all have our baggage; we all have our wounds. We don’t need to wait for someone else to put us in the spotlight before we can take pride in the people we are today. Life can be one of disappointment and strife. We can choose to see meaning in the profane.

Someone once said to me that life is a cruel teacher, because she gives the tests first and the lessons later. But if we see adversity as an opportunity for growth, then any trauma can become an initiation into the Priesthood of Wabi-Sabi. a Briana Crusan is a second-generation pagan and new age spiritualist. A Gluten-free, Dairy-free Whole Food Recipe

Gluten-free Brownies

I

know what you’re thinking…beans…in brownies, you’re crazy!

You can call me crazy after you’ve tried them. These moist brownies are not only satisfying, but packed with protein. So if you’re ready to upgrade your brownie recipe, this one’s for you.

Ingredients 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed 4 eggs 1/3 to 1/2 cup agave nectar or honey (make as mildly sweet as possible) 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp sea salt 2 tsp vanilla 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions 1. In a blender or food processor, combine beans, eggs and cocoa until smooth.

2. Then add all other ingredients, except the walnuts, until blended.

3. Pour batter into an 8- or 9-inch greased pan. Sprinkle walnuts on top.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes depending on the size of pan.

The brownies are done when the center is firm to touch. Do not overcook. They should be moist.

5. Cool, cut and serve.

Deyva: The Power of Light

subjects mostly consisted of my dogs and some of the other horses, along with a few curious friends, and they all seemed to benefit and enjoy it. Before I turn to go, I offer my hands again, but not in the “can I come closer” fashion, but instead in an offering of healing. To my amazement, instantly, within a snap of the fingers, Deyva perks her ears forward and strides over with a fast and determined pace coming straight at me.

My first instinct is “holy crap,” but I know better than to run. If her intention is to charge or attack me, I will have better chances holding my ground. Even though I can’t believe the instant change in her demeanor, I don’t think that she is planning an attack. Her ears are forward and her eyes hold a friendly glow, meeting mine directly. She is walking quickly and determinedly, but is not charging at a run.

Opening the door to nature with healing

eyva isn’t with the rest of the herd. I had been expecting my young pony mare to foal for weeks, and now she is no where to be found. Deyva is younger than I’d like for her to be foaling, but my incorrigible stallion Smokey is also an accomplished fence jumper and had taken liberties 11 months prior.

First time foaling comes with more chances of complications, even with more mature mares. With this in mind, anxiously I walk far out into the sunny 40-acre pasture looking for her. Finally, I see Deyva in the distance. Smokey, in a show of support, is grazing some 100 feet away. As I come closer, I spot a tiny speck standing next to her. With a sigh of relief I am glad to see that, from this distance at least, they both seem to be okay.

Up until now, Deyva had been watching my approach. When I am still at least 30 feet away she stops me dead in my tracks. With ears pinned flat she tosses her head and neck in warning, while at the same time, twitching her tail, stomping her feet and baring her teeth. Once I take a step back, she is still leery but stops with the threats on my life.

Deyva is less than 12 hands tall, but she is tough and has surprising strength. Once I had seen her knock down a 15-hand gelding that outweighed her by 700 pounds. He had made the mistake of invading her space and didn‘t heed her warnings.

Don’t get the wrong idea. Deyva isn’t a bully. Normally she is very sweet — a topnotch lesson pony that I can entrust to care for even the smallest, most timid child. I should have guessed that she would be a protective mother. None of this solves my dilema, though. I want to get closer to meet

If you are indeed a mystic and you would like to take this further, there’s a particular way I would like for you to engage in creativity. It requires refocusing attention to the inner world versus the outer world. It involves softening the ego to hear what the unknown might be saying.
