May your inner dragon keep you brave in 2012

by Tim Miejan wo decades ago, before the human potential movement morphed into Oprah and Buddhist principles paved the way for Presence studies, The Edge was created in the Upper Midwest to share insights on the essence of spirituality and the integration of alternative healing and conventional medicine.

It was a time of great expansion. Holistic business was booming as new centers opened far and wide to offer treatments and classes on complementary therapies.

New shops opened to share books and gifts to support body, mind and soul.

Every month, and every year, revealed more.

The Edge continued to evolve in concert with the holistic community, ever mindful of the need to offer support in an era filled with uncertainty. Contributors wrote articles that uplifted our spirits, all the while knowing that transformation is not an easy business.

Now it is 2012. We’ve witnessed incredible upheaval on this planet in recent years. It has taken a toll. Climate change has taken many lives; the collapse of the stock market has erased many life

savings. And many of the people who opened small businesses to support body, mind and soul have had to shut their doors.

The Edge, which turns 20 in 2012, remains here to offer its support. Each month in 2012, we will celebrate the legacy of this publication.

Chinese astrology proclaims 2012 as the Year of the Dragon, the mightiest of all signs, regarded in China as a divine beast, not one we should seek and destroy. The dragon symbolizes ambition, dominance, bravery and success.

Dragons are free spirits with great passion.

It is fitting that 2012 is a dragon year, not because it will take dragon powers to overcome all of the doomsday hype attached to the end of this year, but because the transformation every one of us is going through requires dragonlike resiliency and determination.

2012: Move As One and achieve your goals

Updating your soul’s journey

by Julie Delene hat does it mean to move as one? More simply, I can tell you how it feels — You feel good! — in your thoughts, your body, and your emotions. You feel excited about achieving your goal, your heart is inspired and happy, and your body is light. Or you may feel relaxed, centered and peaceful with a sense of knowingness. So to move as one, it means your body, mind, heart and spirit are all in agreement with your goal.

Easy enough?! Right? But it doesn’t always feel easy, especially in those areas where we are blocked or stuck. So we can set a goal, but if we feel like it’s too big of a leap and can’t imagine living that way or feel forced to change, then it may not feel good, nor easy.

It could simply mean we have not aligned yet with the right connections that are in harmony with our true desire and we need to keep believing, have patience and move forward. Or more typically, this may mean in some way that we don’t believe, or feel, we can truly achieve this goal. And it may not only be in our thoughts, but locked inside our cellular body, making us feel heavy and disheartened.

For example, you want to lose weight, or have a better job, or more money, or a loving relationship. But when you think about it, it feels like an overwhelming task and your mind is saying “I’ll never be successful at it, so why try, or where would I begin?” The goal can seem overwhelming or non-achievable, especially if we lacked success in the past.

And our chatty minds may repeat those unhelpful thoughts.

As we know, so much of our thought programming can come from our previous experiences, our parents’ view of the world, and our society. As a child, we’re like brand new computers that are downloaded with old software programs – some that work well and some that don’t.

So how do we “re-program” our thought patterns and achieve our goals? Learn to “move as one” in body, mind, heart and spirit:

What you came here to do has probably changed

by Norma Gentile or most people, psychic gifts need to be relearned in each lifetime.

The world is vibrationally distinct in each lifetime — and so is your physical body. It is only natural that you would have to relearn how to be energetically in relationship to yourself and to the world. This is particularly true about how we relate to our soul’s journey and foreknowing future aspects of it.

Whatever your soul planned to do here before you incarnated on Earth has probably changed. Especially if you incarnated before 1972. Humanity changed. The planet changed. Whatever your soul decided to do here on Earth before you incarnated has probably changed.

During the past 50 or so years, there have been multiple shifts in our reality that our souls did not anticipate.

Depending on when in our linear timeline your soul decided upon this lifetime’s goals and challenges, you may be experiencing yourself as disconnected from your own life. Isolation is one symptom I commonly hear from clients, as well as the sensation of floating away from the physical life you are living. From my experience, this simply means that what your mind may think is your soul’s journey is no longer your soul’s journey.

Most of us have been told by someone at some point either what our soul’s journey is, or have figured it out for ourselves. For me, I feel that no one can fully understand or know the journey of anyone’s soul. Not even our own. But we can have senses about what we are drawn to do in this lifetime, and how we are to do it.

Because of the dramatic changes that have already taken place and the increasing pace of future changes, I find it useful to revisit the trajectory of the journey of one’s soul on a regular basis.

The soul’s journey is more apt, at this point in time, to be revealed first to your body, then to your heart, and finally to your brain. Once entered into, your new soul’s journey will continue to weave and shift throughout your lifetime. Learning how to monitor and adapt to changes in your soul’s journey is most useful.

Being in tune with ourselves requires the courage to feel, act and overcome our fears. I have found my body to speak very loudly when I’m off course and/or the results are not as I’d like. Here is a quick process to strengthen your energy and align with your desires by mapping where you are now:  Observe yourself. How do I feel? Where is my energy? What am I thinking about?  Open your breath and mind.

Take a few moments to focus on your breathing to center, let go, become present and listen within.  Vision will inspire you. Connect with your heart. What do I really want? Imagine it; feel it; be it.  Engage by taking a step. YOUR JOURNEY two points in space to define linear time. Where you have been and where you are.

What we are now able to do is change the point that exists in our past. By looking back and clearing past patterns the point behind us changes its location. That means the line drawn between our past and our present naturally changes.

Our potential future changes every time we address, clear and release issues from our past.

I’m not talking past lives here. My guides are clearly stating that by addressing this life’s issues we change this life’s future. When we make changes in this lifetime those changes echo out to all of our other lifetimes and offer healing changes into those lifetimes. Since our bodies exist in the here and now, making changes in the here and now will get you the biggest results.

The head has to have the other partners, the body and heart, in order to see where it is going. If it is just looking backwards all that it can tell you is where you have been, which means you are going to create more of the past rather than utilize the new elements that are available to you now to create a different future.

How to get in touch with your body: a simple meditation

About 1997 our system of creating linear time changed.

Because of this our psychic ability no longer sees the future with the ease it once did. This is because we are no longer creating our future probabilities in the same way as we were before.

Our new system of psychic perception of the future looks more like this: Our body sees where we are in the present moment. That information rises to our heart center. The heart feels our relationship to this present moment. Do we like it and want to extend our experience or are we ready to move onto some other experience? Our heart answers this question and sends the information to our brain. Our brain collects the information from our body and heart, adds its own ability to see the past and comes up with the most likely potential future.

Remember that our brains do have the ability to live in the past, present and future. As humans, we are stepping into an exploration of creating outside of linear time. The first step in this exploration is comprehending how linear time functions. We must first understand time in order to understand how not to be subject to time.

In geometry (and I promise this will be easy, so please keep reading) there is a basic concept that if you have one point and then decide on a second point, you can draw a line between them. That line can extend beyond those two points into infinity in both directions. So you only need

As you explore your journey, it is your mind that is able to look backwards and tell you where you have been. It is the heart and body that can look into the present moment and tell you where you are.

Together, the mind, heart and body can chart a potential path for your future. But this is usually the near future, as your external world continues to shift and change.

I am emphasizing here that the brain can only look back at what has already happened.

Most of us use our minds as the determiner of what to do. This leads us to repeat old patterns and repeat the same unwanted results. When this happens it is easy to assume that we are not in touch with our inner spiritual life or outer world.

But perhaps there is another reason. We experience the present moment most strongly not as thoughts but as kinesthetic sensations in our body.

Simply put, the body lives only in the present moment. The mind remembers the past and can anticipate the future. Our minds therefore live without being anchored in the present moment. This can be very helpful, but not if you are trying to understand your soul’s journey right here and right now.

Lie down on your back. Bend your knees so your feet are flat on the floor or surface you are lying on. This naturally pressed your lower back against the surface you are on, and opens up the pelvic region to increased energy flow.

Feel the breath in your body. Feel the breath in your lower body. Breathe as if you could breathe from your feet up through your knees and into your belly. Your hips move and your lower back expands every time you breathe.

Take normal-sized breaths. How easy can that quality of breath be in your body? Follow that quality of breath as you imagine the breath entering from your lower body. Let it exit wherever it wants to exit. At some point you may fall asleep, go into a light trance or meditation state. You might also notice that the direction of the breath seems to change. Just notice whatever you notice. Let your body’s wisdom tell your mind something that your mind cannot know on its own.

he thought of the year 2012 brings to the minds of many images of gloom and doom, death and destruction, and the potential reemergence of mankind from its ashes. In the last few years there have been countless books, movies and television specials discussing what the authors believe will happen on December 21, 2012.

After investigating all of the available evidence, I have come to my own conclusion as to what will happen on that highly anticipated date.

Before I jump to the punch line and tell you what I believe, let’s spend a few minutes investigating some of the prophecies that have been associated with the 2012 event, and let’s take a look at some of the theories describing what is believed will happen.

The Mayan Calendar

The Maya created a number of different calendars to record the passage of time.

One of them is called the “Calendar Round.”

We learned about this calendar from a book, known as the Dresden Codex. It was spared the burning frenzy of the early Christian priests in Mexico. The Calendar Round is made up of two separate calendar systems used by the Maya: The Tzolk’on, or 260-day Sacred Calendar, and the Haab, the 365-day vague calendar. When combined, they form a new calendar that measures 52 years.

The Calendar Round can only distinguish 52 years before it starts repeating itself.

The Mayans needed a more refined dating method. To ensure that dates could be identified over these extended periods, the Maya devised the “Long Count” calendar. We became aware of the Long Count through the study of various stelae found in the ruins of many abandoned Mayan cities.

The Long Count identifies the number of days that have passed since the beginning of the last Great Cycle. A great Cycle has a length of 13 baktuns or 1,872,000 days (5,125.36 years). Once completed, like the odometer on your car, the calendar resets itself to 0 (zero). The accepted start date of the current Great Cycle, as proposed by Sir J. Eric S. Thompson, is August 13, 3114 BCE. By adding 1,872,000 days to August 13, 3114 BC, we arrive at the date December 21, 2012 — the “end of the Mayan Calendar.”

Hopi prophecies

While the Mayan Calendar provides us with a date for its completion, some researchers believe that other prophecies support the

end of a great cycle is fast approaching.

According to the Hopi Indians, as reported by White Feather — a Hopi of the ancient Bear Clan — to a minister named David Young in 1958, these are the signs of the end times: “The Fourth World shall end soon, and the Fifth World will begin. This the elders everywhere know. The Signs over many years have been fulfilled, and so few are left.”

“This is the First Sign: We are told of the coming of the white-skinned men, like Pahana, but not living like Pahana men who took the land that was not theirs. And men who struck their enemies with thunder.”

“This is the Second Sign: Our lands will see the coming of spinning wheels filled with voices. In his youth, my father saw this prophecy come true with his eyes — the white men bringing their families in wagons across the prairies.”

“This is the Third Sign: A strange beast like a buffalo but with great long horns, will overrun the land in large numbers. These White Feather saw with his eyes — the coming of the white men’s cattle.”

“This is the Fourth Sign: The land will be crossed by snakes of iron.”

“This is the Fifth Sign: The land shall be crisscrossed by a giant spider’s web.”

“This is the Sixth sign: The land shall be crisscrossed with rivers of stone that make pictures in the sun.”

“This is the Seventh Sign: You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it.”

“This is the Eight Sign: You will see many youth, who wear their hair long like my people, come and join the tribal nations, to learn their ways and wisdom.”

“And this is the Ninth and Last Sign: You will hear of a dwelling place in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of my people will cease.”

“These are the Signs that great destruction is coming. The world shall rock to and fro. The white man will battle against other people in other lands — with those who possessed the first light of wisdom. There will be many columns of smoke and fire such as White Feather has seen the white man make in the deserts not far from here. Only those which come will cause disease and a great dying.

Many of my people, understanding the prophecies, shall be safe. Those who

stay and live in the places of my people also shall be safe. Then there will be much to rebuild. And soon — very soon afterward — Pahana will return. He shall bring with him the dawn of the Fifth World. He shall plant the seeds of his wisdom in their hearts. Even now the seeds are being planted. These shall smooth the way to the Emergence into the Fifth World.”

The signs, over the years, have been interpreted as follows: The First Sign is the arrival of the white man with his guns. The Second Sign is of the pioneers’ covered wagons. The Third Sign is of longhorn cattle. The Fourth Sign describes the railroad tracks. The Fifth Sign is a clear image of our electric power and telephone lines. The Sixth Sign describes concrete highways and their mirage-producing effects. The Seventh Sign foretells of oil spills in the ocean. The Eighth Sign clearly indicates the “Hippy Movement” of the 1960s. The Ninth Sign was the U.S. Space Station Skylab, which fell to Earth in 1979.

According to Australian eye-witnesses, it appeared to be burning blue.

The Hindu Yuga

The Hindu Yuga cycle has also been linked by many as supporting the December 21, 2012 date. According to Hindu Tradition, the length of all life here on earth is described as one day in the life of Brahma, the god of THIS universe. When Brahma awakens, the universe appears. When he sleeps, it disappears. It is said that one day in the life of Brahma lasts for 4,320,000 years.

Each day in the life of Brahma is broken down into ages, or yugas. They include: the Satya Yuga, the Treta Yuga, the Dwapar Yuga and the Kali Yuga. Without going into a lot of detail regarding the math that supports these ages, it is believed that the Satya Yuga lasted for 1,728,000 years, the Treta Yuga, for 1,296,000 years and the Dwapar for 864,000 years. It is also believed that we are now in the Kali Yuga. The Kali Yuga is to last for 432,000 years. At this time, Brahma will again slumber and our world (what we know of as our universe) will disappear from existence.

Similar to the Long Count of the Maya, each Yuga has a particular characteristic. The Satya Yuga, for example, can be roughly translated as the “Age of Truth.” It is sometimes thought of as the Golden Age of Man. During this age, goodness and high ideals ruled supreme.

Human intelligence and consciousness were at their peak. After 1,728,000 years of enlightenment, we entered the Treta

Yuga. During the Treta Yuga, there was a fall in man’s spiritual consciousness.

Moral and ethical ideals began to decline.

As we moved into the Dwapar Yuga, man’s level of consciousness was now half of where it was during the Satya Yuga. It was during the Dwapar Yuga that man began using what he knew for his own personal comfort, regardless of its impact on others. According to the texts, during the final age, the Kali Yuga, man experiences a total loss of spiritual awareness. Trapped in spiritual darkness, we can only comprehend our physical bodies and the objects within our physical world.

Meaning “Age of Vice,” the Kali Yuga is characterized by strife, discord and contention. Evil and dishonesty has replaced the truth found in the Satya Yuga. In the Hindu Text, the Vishnu Purana — thought to be written somewhere between 800 and 300 BCE — we find a detailed description of the Kali Yuga. Here are a few excerpts from this document: “The minds of men will be wholly occupied in acquiring wealth; and wealth will be spent solely on selfish gratifications. Women will follow their inclinations, and be ever fond of pleasure. Men will fix their desires upon riches, even though dishonestly acquired.”

“The kings of Kali Yuga will be addicted to corruption and will seize the property of their subjects. Then property and wealth alone will confer rank; falsehood will be the only means of success. Corruption will be the universal means of subsistence.”

“Princes, instead of protecting, will plunder their subjects; and, under the pretext of levying customs, will rob merchants of their property. In the Kali age everyone who has cars and elephants and steeds will be a Rájá: everyone who is feeble will be a slave.”

Based on society today, it seems as if we are well into the energy dynamics of the Kali Yuga.

Fuel to the fire

Prophecies derived from the Book of Revelation in the Bible have also provided ammunition to the 2012 debate. Talk about Earth changes, the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse and the Anti-Christ have added fuel to the fire of this already hot debate.

A number of theories have emerged to explain what will happen at the end of the Mayan calendar. The outcome (according to supporters) falls into two major camps, which are as different from January 2012 edge magazine

Calmer, more transcendental

Switching theoretical sides, there are theories of a calmer and more transcendental nature. According to some, on December 21, 2012 our planet will enter into what is called the Galactic Alignment. This astronomical configuration is said to happen once every 26,000 years based upon the precession of the equinox. Due to this astrological configuration, it has been said that our planet will be aligned with the center of the galaxy. This will cause our chakras (the energy centers within the body) to open, thus allowing the free flow of universal energy into our bodies.

Similar to this theory is that the beginning of a new calendar cycle will usher in a new age. It is often likened to the “Age of Aquarius” as a time of peace, love and understanding. This shift would not be instantaneous. Instead, changes

to our consciousness and collective conscious would commence.

This shift would lead to a new, better and harmonious life here on Earth. No one has identified how long this process would take, only that on December 21, it will have begun.

The final theory associated with 2012 is that of ascension. The Rapture describes saving individuals from an upcoming worldwide catastrophe. In this scenario, the person is present on Earth one minute and gone the next. Ascension theory is something like that which was presented in the TV series “StarGate.”

The character Daniel Jackson ascends and becomes one with the Ancients.

The concept of spiritual ascension is associated with a number of spiritual beliefs and practices. Through self-transformation, we would no longer need our physical bodies and will transcend into a higher plane of being. Proponents of this theory are unclear if ascension will happen December 21 or if it is the process of ascension will begin on that date. In any case, this one sounds pretty good to me.

each other as day and night. The most popular theories promoted are apocalyptic in nature.

They foretell of dramatic events which will virtually wipe mankind off of the face of the earth. If I had to pick from these scenarios, the most likely outcome would be that we would blow ourselves up.

Nuclear weapons, a troubled economy and the growing threat of terrorism all add to the stress and pressure governments face. It only requires one badly played card before we are all potentially toast.

Other popular theories include the Rapture which is found in the Book of Revelation. According to this theory, the Rapture begins with “the saved” being taken up and off the Earth. In the movie Left Behind, these individuals just disappear, leaving the unworthy behind.

Once saved, Armageddon can begin in full force. A war between good and evil follows, and finally, Jesus, flying in on his cloud, will return to end the fighting.

Associated with this theory (although not supported by fundamentalist Christians) is the belief that it is not Jesus who brings about the end of Armageddon, but aliens. It is these same aliens who transport the worthy off the planet and save them from Armageddon.

Additional end time theories include: the appearance of Planet-X (sometimes referred to as Niberu), solar winds, giant asteroids and even a magnetic pole shift.

Each of these potential events could end life on this planet.

What will happen?

The question I am most often asked when talking about 2012 is, “What will really happen to us?” Based upon my research to date, this is what I have deduced. Starting bright and early on December 22, 2012 the sun will come up, we will rise from our slumber and we will begin a new grand and glorious day.

You might ask how I came to this conclusion? I am happy to share that information with you now.

Fulfillment of prophecies

Let’s return to the Hopi Prophecies.

According to their prophecies, it is the fulfillment of the identified events which will indicate the beginning of the Fifth World. Compelling as they are, like the prophecies of Nostradamus, we are left with the question: Are we making assumptions about their true meaning?

What has been suggested as the fulfillment of the prophecies is, on face value, very persuasive, but we will never know for sure.

There are also problems when you factor in the Hindu Yugas. The Kali Yuga is said to begin on the day Krishna died in 3100 BC. The 3100 BC start date of

the Kali Yuga does make you contemplate its connection with the dates given for this cycle in the Mayan Calendar.

What many 2012 supporters do not tell you is that the Kali Yuga is identified as lasting for 432,000 years. If you subtract the number of years that have passed since the start of the Kali Yuga, we still have roughly 427,000 years to go until this Yuga ends — and the universe as we know it will disappear. The math does not add up to any time in 2012.

Over the centuries, prophecies derived from the Book of Revelation have been interpreted and re-interpreted to rationalize many of the difficult time periods we have encountered. Is the Book of Revelations talking about what is going on now? It could be. But it could also have been describing the emperor Nero who banished John, the author of Revelations, to Patmos. Over the years, this same text has been used to predict the end of the world numerous times.

Finally, we come to the Mayan Calendar. The date of December 21, 2012 was determined by Sir J. Eric S. Thompson and is referred to as the Thompson Correlation. As you may recall, Thompson stated that the current Great Cycle commenced on August 13, 3114 BC. This date has been generally accepted as the most likely start date of the cycle. However, Thompson is not the only one who has proposed a start date.

If you add 1,872,000 days to some of the suggested alternative launch times, dates for the end of the Mayan Calendar have ranged from the year 1734 AD all the way through to the year 2532 AD. As you can see, there really isn’t anything that directly supports the December 21, 2012 date. It is really just a bunch of smoke and mirrors. The net effect has been that many of us are afraid of what may, or may not, happen on that date! If you are worried that the world is coming to an end, let it go. NUTRITION | WINTER A Gluten-free, Dairy-free Whole Food Recipe

Turkey Chipotle Chili

by Maggie Christopher ’ve tried many chili recipes and I landed on this one as my favorite.

It’s thick, flavorful and the bottle of gluten-free bear adds a great flavor. If you haven’t had your greens for the day, add some kale or spinach.

I

Ingredients: 1 large yellow onion, diced 2 carrots, sliced thin 4-6 cloves of garlic, crushed 3 TBS unrefined olive oil 1/2 to 1 tsp chipotle chili powder (based on the spice level you prefer) 2 to 3 tsp chili powder 2 heaping teaspoons oregano 2 tsp ground cumin 1 lb ground organic turkey 1 15-oz can of corn, drained 1 28-oz can fire roasted crushed tomatoes 1 15-oz can fire roasted crushed tomatoes 2 15-oz cans of mixed chili beans 1 15-oz can refried beans (Amy’s organic with green chilies works well)

1 gluten-free beer (Daura is a good brand.)

2 TBS honey 2 TBS red wine vinegar 1/4 to 1/2 cup chopped cilantro Salt to taste (start with 1/2 tsp)

Directions:

1. Sauté diced onion and garlic in olive oil in large heavy pot over medium heat.

2. Stir in chili powder, oregano and cumin.

3. Cook until the onions are soft and coated in seasonings.

4. Add the ground turkey and cook until no longer pink.

5. Add corn, crushed tomatoes, kidney beans, refried beans, beer, carrot, honey, vinegar and salt to taste.

6. Turn down heat and cook at a low simmer partially covered for about 1 hour, stirring frequently.

Waking up refreshed from the winter doldrums

Ancient Chinese Medical texts teach doctors to live in harmony with the elements. They tell practitioners that Winter is the phase of Water, a time to go symbolically deep within the womb of the earth and replenish. It is a season of nurturing and of preparation for the moment of rebirth.

The nights become longer, and daylight becomes a precious commodity. It is all too easy to brood during the dark and congealing nature of these long months, to fall prey to Seasonal Depression, or to simply have greater difficulty rousing yourself from sleep. Yet, people face the need to wake up in the morning alert, refreshed, and to continue to shake off lingering fatigue while attending to daily routines.

Fortunately, there are a number of simple methods garnered from Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine that anyone can use, and that serve as a natural “wake-up” call to the body and soul.

1. Fall in rhythm with the night.

Nothing beats a good night of sleep. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, blood is lost (consumed) if you do not experience deep sleep. This blood fuels our dreams. It fuels our awareness. And, of course, it fuels our bodies. Assign yourself a time to go to bed. Keep to this hour. Avoid late-nite meals, and get under the covers without any electronic distractions such as your TV, computer, or cellphone. Books and journaling are okay, by the way.

2. Move the Qi and the Blood.

Quite simply Qi is energy. It flows in channels throughout body and sends instructions to various parts of the anatomy. There are specific Acupuncture points on these channels that will command certain functions.

Press down on the Large Intestine point #4 (LI 4), called Hegu, which resides between the index finger and thumb on the back of the hand. It is on the top of a mound of muscle you can see when you hold these two fingers

3. Suddenly rouse yourself with your body’s own natural “smelling salts.”

No shocking aroma is required. Press Governor point 26 with your nail. This point is 2/3rds up the philtrum, between the upper lip and the nose. Roll your index finger onto this point and then press down with your nail at about a 45 degree angle. Do this for about 30 seconds. You will feel yourself becoming more aware as you do this. This point is a resuscitation point.

Finally, rub your palms over your face in the shape of a heart, starting from the nose and going to the chin.

The face is the starting and ending point for many of the Yang channels. The Yang channels bring bright energy to the surface of the body.

Continue to trace the heart shapes several times and you will be ready to face the day.

Fulfillment of evolving perfection

by Jerry Buchmeier everal years ago I attended a fiveday retreat focused on Sophia, an aspect of Divine Feminine expressing Wisdom. This was an intense workshop, with sessions sometimes going late into the night. I was fortunate to be able to stay and sleep at the retreat center itself, so the late hours were not a problem for me. However, one of the men attending was camping out at the state park, which was located a few miles away, mostly up, on a hill atop the river bluff. He would ride his bike up there at the end of the day, sleep in his tent, and glide down in the morning.

One night we completed our discussion and prayers quite late, near midnight. I thought he couldn’t possibly get a good night’s sleep and be back at 8 a.m. So I offered to drive him and his bike up to the park. It was a stunningly beautiful July night. I dropped him off at the campground, and walked along the road away from the lights to see the sky, feel the cool breeze and smell the clean air.

I’ve never seen the stars so close and so big, almost like I could reach skyward, touching them at the end of my finger. As I looked at the stars, I felt an energy come down into me. It was a sudden shift in my solar plexus and gut, a new feeling that I couldn’t put into words. It was a profound feeling. I sought to hold that feeling while I went directly to my car, returned to the center, and crawled into bed.

I lay awake in bed holding and focusing upon that feeling. I wanted to be able to find a symbol or key to help me return to it, or be able to put its meaning into words so that I wouldn’t lose this profound experience. It took three hours of focused attention before I found words to describe the meaning of the feeling: “You are the fulfillment of my

evolving perfection.”

The next morning in our group meditation, I told the story, and relayed the message that I had received, presumably from Sophia. It was clear to me that the message was for me, and applying as well to every human. The minister leading the meditation honored the story by leaving a long silence at its completion.

I’ve wrestled with the meaning across the years. What does it mean to have perfection evolve? How can a midpoint in a time-line that leads to perfection be a fulfillment, a perfection itself? And how can a limited male human like myself be a fulfillment of an evolving feminine Divinity?

Yet, that feeling is within me, available occasionally through the access provided by those words, incomplete though they are to express the mystery behind it. It is clear that I, we, exist beyond the limits of our constraining time and space. Each moment in our lives, maybe in a holographic way, encompasses or touches into our Divinity within: a point in time that accesses eternity, a point in space connected integrally into infinity, a point in development that contains the perfection implicit in its original creation.

How valuable, then, is each moment, each event, each person! Such thoughts, feelings and realizations move me to continuing wonder and appreciation. a

The fact that my daughter had to die before I would have the knowingness to tap into these spiritual gifts makes me more than a little angry. But yet, I know that if she had not left this world for the next, I would not be in the place that I find myself today. I owe her so much.

Now, I suspect that there are many people who find these subjects to be fascinating…but it ends there – with just a fascination. It was that way with me for the first 49 years of my life. However, everything changed on September 20, 2003.

That was the day that my beautiful daughter died very tragically, very suddenly and very unexpectedly. But that was also the day that a new world opened its door for me and I walked through.

One of my children, whom I loved more than anything else in this world, was gone.

What did I have to lose?

There is a saying that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. That was certainly true for me.

Within four months of my daughter’s death I found myself in a reading with Kathryn Harwig. My connection with Kathryn not only forged a new connection with my daughter, but it also opened up a whole new world of psychic development for me.

In short, Kathryn was instrumental in helping me to find my joy again. I now write and speak and share my incredible grief journey with anyone who will listen.

The Flower Child (A true story)

by Burt Berlowe hile standing on the sidewalk near my front yard on a muggy, steamy July day, I noticed a woman approaching from the street. Her rotund body was encased in a long multi-colored skirt and baggy light green top, with a white flower placed neatly on the left side of her brown hair. She was carrying a small zipped case with a University of Minnesota logo on it. She appeared headed for a transitional group home for mentally ill adults next door to our house.

We exchanged greetings, then she came closer to continue the conversation.

“Do you know the secret of life?” she asked nonchalantly.

“Oh do you know what it is?’ I responded, taken aback by the bold introductory question.

“Do you want me to tell you?”

For some reason, I didn’t pursue the answer then. “Do you live in the group home?” I asked instead.

She nodded and a slight smile of relief creased her round face. “I am getting out of here tomorrow,” she said, after three months. “I will be so glad to be free from addicts and alcoholics. Society doesn’t treat mentally people very well. I’ve been in the hospital. I’ve been in jail. I just want to be free.”

The key to peace

As she talked, I noticed a tattoo on her left arm, and, in particular, a small key with a peace sign on it that hung around her neck.

I asked her about it.

“This is the key to peace,” she said, pulling it forward to give a better view. In response to my question, she named the shop in St. Paul where she got it – a small New Age place called Gypsy Moon.

I complimented her on the key, noting that I might want to get one like it.

She showed me another small item dangling from her dress. “Do you know what this is? It’s a dreamcatcher.”

“Yes, I know.”

“Do you know what it means?”

“I know it has Native American origin.”

“It catches the nightmares and traps them and lets out the good dreams for posi-

tive energy.”

“I wrote a poem about peace,” she said, lifting up the bottom of her dress on her left leg to show me the engraved words on her thigh. “Do you want to hear it.”

“Sure,” I said.

“I need a smoke,” she remarked, starting to walk towards the group home. “If you want to continue talking you can sit with me.”

Despite the stifling heat that tried to drive me away, I followed her to the front step of the group home next to a smoking pole. She lit up a cigarette as mosquitos began to buzz around her.

She began to tell more about her recent past. She wrote the poem after breaking up with a long-time boyfriend who had abused her. “He hit me. Once were driving and he started speeding and said he was going to drive off a cliff. I mean wouldn’t you be bothered by someone who called you names and abused you? I finally had to break up with him just a few days ago. I wrote a poem about that” “Is that the one on your leg?”

“Yeah. I have it written down.” She reached in her purse and pulled out a crumpled sheet of paper and read the poem. I don’t recall all of the words but I remember her making an analogy to a pine tree and broken love, and that it had a poetic syntax that resonated with me. I complimented her on it telling her she had a talent for poetry.

Taking another drag on her cigarette, she gazed straight ahead with a somber expression, referring to her ex-boyfriend. “He is an alcoholic and a drug addict and a drug dealer.

But lately, I saw a sadness in his face.”

A chance to meet

“It’s been great to talk to you,” I offered.

“We have lived here a long time and have seen lots of residents from here come and go but have not had a chance to meet many of them. We’ve been here since about 1993.”

“I was 13 years old then,” she said. “I’m thirty one now. “ “Do you have a place to go when you leave here?” I asked.

“Yeah. I found a place in Prospect Park

(the neighborhood next to mine). My mother helped me. She is an alcoholic, but is trying to reform.

“Do you know what you want to do with your life?” I asked.

“I want to help bring world peace,” she said.

I nodded in agreement, acknowledging that was one of my life goals, as well.

“The mosquitos are eating me up,” she said. “I need to go in.” She got up and walked to the door then paused and repeated the question we began with.

“Do you know the secret of life?”

“What is it?” I asked.

She stopped for a minute undoubtedly reflecting on the lessons learned from her hardscrabble past. “The secret of life” she said emphatically, “is ‘living.’ ” I thought about that for a minute as I waved good-bye to her.

“Best wishes on your journey,” I called out. “I’m a peace activist myself,” you know,” wanting to establish that connection before she left.

“Peace be with you,” she answered, opening the door.

“And you,” I said as parting words.

The flower children

As I reflected on our meeting, a strange sense of déjà vu came over me. Here was a woman born long after the 1960s.

Yet, she reminded me so much of the flower children of that generation in appearance and in the way she was living her life. She had found a way to turn her adversity into caring about something much larger than herself — peace in the world, which bonded us in cause and spirit. (I resolved to find one of those key chains.)

The week I met her had been a reflective one for me emotionally and I had thought often about the meaning and purpose of life but hadn’t resolved the question. I thought I was dying

by Kathy Parkin have always been the picture of health, so when I started having distressing symptoms that sounded like possible ovarian cancer, I finally went to see my doctor. After all the lab tests and even a CT scan, everything pointed once more to the clean bill of health I have always had. But I felt like crap! There were days at work when I wondered if I would make it through my shift. What was going on with me?

In addition to the physical symptoms, there were the “other” symptoms — emotional and spiritual ones — that started to show themselves. I heard a message – inside my head, not from anyone outside of me – to start journaling. I

MY UNEXPECTED AWAKENING had always scoffed at people who journaled, but for some reason I found a lovely journal with a moon on it, so at least it looked nice!

I found once I started writing, the words would not stop coming.

Quite a few years ago I left the Lutheran church, finding that I had too many questions that they could not answer. I worked with a woman who was Wiccan, and she opened me up to many things in the metaphysical world. I have always believed in things considered outside the realm of believable. After my mom passed away, I felt her presence around me for many years.

I have been on a spiritual quest for some time, but until the health issues arose, it was a quiet journey.

Now I found myself reading any and all books that I could on any and all metaphysical subjects. I watched John Edwards’ show, “Crossing Over,” and felt myself just saying, “Yes, yes, that’s it!” My emotions and my heart were also opening up. I found myself hating the constant gossiping at work that up until that time I had fully participated in.

The tears would flow and flow; many times I didn’t even know why.

Then one day a comment made by my now ex-husband shook me to the core and I finally said, “Enough!” I moved my things to the downstairs bedroom, wrote him a note asking for a divorce, and placed my wedding ring on top of it. I stayed in that bedroom for four months while I got my life together, along with enough money to move to my own place. But I still did not know what was going on with me – all the changes.

Soon after, I found a psychic expo and had a reading. The medium told me I was

having an awakening. At last! I had found someone who could put a name to my upside-down life. When I looked up “spiritual awakening” and read the list of symptoms, I cried with relief. I was not going crazy! At another expo, I found a wonderful energy healer who helped me with the almost fifty years of hurt and pain that was now coming out in the form of those physical symptoms. It was not a physical illness; it was an illness of my soul.

I realized how numb I had become to life, just sleepwalking through it all, nodding and smiling and saying yes to anyone and everything. Now I have found my voice and learned all over again how to connect with people and how to see the light that is inside of all of us.

I went on a journey of early retirement, went back to school for a time, traveled to Chicago all on my own, and am living on my own – all without the constant fear. Life is an adventure! It is so much of an adventure that I finally heeded the pull of my soul to move 1,600 miles away to Oregon, where I knew no one but felt that it was my true home – and it sure feels like it!

In the end, I really was dying, but it was just the death of my old fear-based self. And I welcomed the birth of my true self, my sweet soul. a Kathy Parkin, after working 30 years in health care, decided to take an early retirement. Her journey since then has taken her down many paths, which includes taking some college classes to feed her joy of learning, volunteering her gift of time with others, finding the spark of writing within herself, and recently relocating to Portland, OR, after being a longtime Minnesotan — and the journey continues in her new home.

Near-death experiences…

Five times I have been in the same room near the side of loved ones as they have passed from this world. Each of these deaths, in their own way, was perfect for the person whose life we were honoring as they passed into the next world. Perfect in the sense that each mirrored the person involved, seemingly made for them as if their life had molded their death just for them.

It was the first two of these near-death experiences that were to play a role in my personal awakening process. Not that I realized it at the time, of course, but by looking back on it now, I see how pivotal these experiences were in my life. I’d had my share of troubles by then, and I was just beginning to make a life for myself and figure out who I was.

When I got word that grandpa was dying early in 1993, I drove up to Minnesota from Texas to be with the family as he died.

My grandfather had lived a full life and had been the one person I knew I could count on if needed. He dedicated his life to his family, and all that he did revolved around doing things for others. I’d always thought of him as a dinosaur, in a way, a relic to by-gone days when people were more community oriented.

His entire family, including my grandmother, his children and grandchildren, were gathered around his bed telling him how much we loved him as he passed. I left Minnesota feeling quite at peace with Grandpa’s death, knowing that he certainly had earned such a loving send off.

In 1994, I received word that my father was in the hospital with small chance of

recovery. Once again I made the trek up to Minnesota for my last chance to see him.

Dad also had his entire family with him as he passed. I vividly recall us standing around his hospital bed, somberly watching him as he left. A few hours before he died, the nurse had called my Dad’s name, and for a brief moment his eyes flared open. There was anger in those eyes, and fear, which in an eerie way mirrored the life dad had led: a life filled with anger, resentment, fear and loathing. Things had never seemed to go right for Dad, and his death had become another example of how unfair life is. He was only 54 years old.

Once I got back to Texas, I spent a lot of time alone contemplating my father’s death — Grandpa’s, too — because the inevitable comparison between the two was prominent in my mind. I remember thinking about those eyes of dad’s, and their impact on me. I made an inner vow to myself that no matter what, when my time comes, I was not going to go out like he did, with anger in my eyes and fear in my heart. I swore that when my time came, I would go out like Grandpa did, peacefully and at ease with my role in the world.

My promise to myself was heartfelt — yet I had no clue how to accomplish it. But this I knew: Based on how my life — and

feelings towards this life — had gone up until the point when dad died, I knew I had the very same potential in me to go out just like he did. I also felt a great deal of anger and pent-up emotional baggage, which had the potential to dominate my actions.

After I made this inner vow to myself, I can now say that my life actually did begin to change.

I began experiencing some amazing shifts in my views of the world.

But it was that inner vow I made that inspired these changes. It is like the “universe” recognized my true desire for change, and thus responded accordingly by putting things in my life to help these changes occur.

My personal awakening has been a process; there is no single moment in my life in which I can point and say, “This is when I woke up.” I remain convinced, however, that my inner vow to somehow find peace with who I am that gave the universe permission to then begin showing me how to find this peace. Beyond the label, what makes some food more super than others?

ast month’s article looked at the top five most popularly mentioned superfoods. They included turmeric, garlic, ginger, healthy fats and tea.

The theme of these food items is they have known anti-inflammatory properties. This month, we will look at the next five most popularly mentioned superfoods. The list was compiled after looking through current superfoods literature.

BERRIES

The berry category covers many different fruits, but the few specifically mentioned most in superfoods literature include blueberries, goji berries, and acai berries. Each will be discussed separately.

The primary nutrient that brings blueberries to superfood status is phytonutrients, specifically the high concentration of antioxidants

and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Antioxidants serve as destroyers of free radicals that can cause cellular damage in the body. Further, blueberries have a low glycemic index, which means they don’t have a strong impact on blood sugar levels and may even help regulate blood sugar in persons with type-2 diabetes. Blueberries are also a good source of vitamins K and C and manganese.

The health benefit of blueberries is well-known, and research is beginning to look more closely at the powerful little fruit. Studies have found blueberries to help improve memory, prevent muscle damage after muscle strain, improve cardiovascular health and help prevent cancer.

When consuming blueberries, it is best to eat them raw rather than in cooked form. Freezing blueberries does not appear to affect their nutritional value, so that is another good option.

Finally, literature suggests that organic blueberries may have higher levels of antioxidants than conventionally grown blueberries. Eating raw and organic blueberries is the best way to maximize the health benefits.

Goji berries, somewhat new to the West, often are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to help eyesight, protect the liver, boost immunity and improve circulation.

They interact mostly with the liver and kidney systems. Recent research found support for the claim that goji berries help improve vision. Many

people eat goji berries to help with general weakness and lack of energy.

Recent uses also include negating the effects of chemotherapy and radiation and for burns, ulcers, bedsores and frostbite. The main health-promoting nutrients in goji berries include its phytonutrients, but also vitamins C, B1 and B2 and antioxidants. Commonly mentioned for its potential anti-aging properties, goji berries have been found to contain very high concentrations of antioxidants, which may help slow the aging process in the body.

One thing to be aware of with goji berries is the high incidence of marketing claims. It seems that the more exotic the superfood, the more likely manufactures are to try to exploit it. Some manufacturers say goji berry juice will cure cancer or help people live longer, with little to no proof. There are plenty of other ways to increase antioxidant consumption (such as blueberries), and many can be found more locally than goji berries. If you choose to try goji berries, be sure they are from a reputable source and be aware of the claims. While goji berries do have healthy properties, many are exploiting this and consumers by selling expensive products that may not even be pure goji berry.

The last of the superfood berries, acai berries, are again high in antioxidants. While commonly marketed as helping aid in weight loss, studies have not supported this claim to date. While antioxidant-rich foods and fruits are a

part of a balanced diet and that may affect weight loss, acai berries have not been found to have any special weight loss properties.

Like goji berries, acai berries are an exotic fruit recently introduced to the West as a sort of miracle potion. Be cautious about marketing claims, and be sure you know the source of any acai berry products you may purchase. If you prefer to stick with more local options, blueberries contain many of the same healthy components.

NUTS AND SEEDS

Similar to berries, the nuts and seeds category include many different options.

Some nuts and seeds have more nutritional value than others, but in general, nuts and seeds are part of a balanced diet. Many nuts and seeds contain high concentrations of many vitamins and minerals that are necessary for optimal health.

Nuts and seeds are high in protein and fiber, and they are a high-fat food, but the fat is heart-healthy unsaturated omega, which may help lower cholesterol and reduce heart attack risks. Nuts, specifically walnuts, are high in omega 3 fatty acids and some contain antioxidants. Nuts and seeds may help reduce inflammation and clear the bowels.

The great thing about nuts and seeds is the ease in eating them. Both make a great snack, and can be munched on whenever hunger strikes. Due to the protein, fiber and fat, nuts and seeds will help satisfy hunger for much longer than other snack foods. The highest health benefit from nuts and seeds will come from raw and unsalted varieties.

Many suggest purchasing organic when possible. Often co-ops and natural food stores will have bulk options of nuts and seeds, which is a highly cost-effective way to purchase them. In addition, using nut oils in cooking is another way to increase omega-3 fatty acid consumption. To enjoy seeds without much effort, simply sprinkle them Amber A. on salads, stir-fries, desserts and oatmeal or cereal. The opportunities to use them are plentiful.

SWEET POTATOES/ SQUASH/PUMPKIN

The next category includes sweet potatoes, squash and pumpkins. One important note is that these vegetables are not in the same botanical family, and thus are quite different.

However, they include very similar nutrient properties, namely the antioxidant betacarotene. In the body, the carotenes are then converted to vitamin A. Beta-carotenes are known to protect against cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Sweet potatoes, the unlikely tubers, are actually very high in nutrients. Considered nothing more than a dessert-like side dish to many, a sweet potato contains high levels of vitamin A, antioxidants, specifically beta-carotene, and is an anti-inflammatory.

Research suggests that sweet potatoes are especially potent when passing through the digestive tract to help remove heavy metals and free radicals. Another potential benefit of sweet potatoes is that they can help regulate blood sugar, even in persons with type-2 diabetes. Further, when steamed or boiled, sweet potatoes have a low glycemic load and are high in dietary fiber. Lastly, sweet potatoes may have antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Sweet potatoes can be boiled, steamed or roasted like any traditional potato.

Like sweet potatoes, squash, specifically winter squash, are extremely high in the antioxidants alpha and beta-carotene and vitamins A and C. And also like sweet potatoes, we often think of squash as being a starchy carbohydrate. While true, new research is suggesting squash starch is different than that of more unhealthy varieties, and that it actually contains anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-diabetic properties. These antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties are the reason winter squash is being studied for its potential cancer prevention and treatment abilities. Studies also are ongoing to determine how well winter squash helps regulate

SUPERFOODS and potentially prevent diabetes. In addition, winter squash contain decent amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Finally, like most other superfoods, the antiinflammatory effects of winter squash may help prevent cardiovascular issues.

Like sweet potatoes, squash can be cooked and seasoned in many ways; it can be prepared by roasting, baking or steaming. You can save the seeds from the squash and roast them for a nutrient-dense snack (see nuts and seeds).

The bright orange color of pumpkins is a giveaway that beta-carotene is present in this superfood. It contains strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Pumpkins can be prepared similar to squash and the seeds can also be roasted to make a healthy snack.

CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES

The word Cruciferous comes from the former botanical name for this family of plants, the Cruciferae. This name was derived from the appearance of the plants, namely their four-petal, cross-like (crucifix) flowers. Although this family of plants (commonly called the mustard family) is now named the Brassicaceae, nutrition literature commonly refers to the vegetables in this family as Cruciferous, including cauliflower, broccoli, broccoli sprouts, cabbage, bok choy, cress, horseradish, kale, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, rutabaga, kohlrabi, arugula and radish.

Nearly all the cruciferous vegetables are high in vitamins C and K, fiber, folic acid, and manganese, with each vegetable containing a different combination of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. They also include the antioxidant vitamin A carotenoids and demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties.

Cruciferous vegetables have known anti-cancer properties. The vitamin K component helps reduce inflammation, which could play a role in its ability to fight cancer. In addition to the anti-inflammatory properties, cruciferous vegetables are strong antioxidants. They also contain high levels of fiber, even without much intake, which can have an effect on the digestive tract and digestive cancers. The phytonutrients in cruciferous vegetables, namely glucosinolates, help prevent cancer and are found almost

exclusively in cruciferous vegetables.

Cruciferous vegetables can be eaten raw or cooked, and come in a variety of recipes and varieties. Some of the vegetables are preferred one way or another, so finding a recipe is advised when trying a new variety.

LEGUMES

Legumes are the fruits from plants of the Fabaceae (commonly referred to as the pea) family. Examples of commonly eaten legumes include peas, beans, lentils, peanuts, alfalfa and soy. Most legumes are high in protein and fiber, minerals such as potassium and magnesium and the vitamin folate. They also contain antioxidants.

Legumes are touted for promoting longevity, as consumption of them is high in various countries with high life expectancies. Legumes may also help protect against cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis. The fiber in legumes helps with digestive issues and may help prevent colon cancer.

Legumes are versatile and can be prepared in a plethora of ways. Add them to soups and stews and salads or use them as a side-dish.

Honorable Mentions

Just in case this top-ten list doesn’t provide enough options to increase the nutrients in your daily meals, we’ll throw in a couple of honorable mentions. While not mentioned in nutrition literature as superfoods by as many sources, these foods all provide some sort of healthpromoting benefits, just not as much as the others.

The honorable mentions include: Mushrooms, Echinacea, Dark Chocolate (the higher percentage of cocoa, the better), Tomatoes (beware of canned tomatoes due to potential BPA seepage from the can lining), Red wine (due to the phytonutrient, resveratrol), Whole Grains (namely quinoa, oats, buckwheat and barley), Blue Green Algae (especially spirulina) and Honey.

Now, relax, take a deep breath and remember, it’s about small changes.

Take one of these, or two, and begin incorporating them in natural ways that you enjoy. If you don’t like it, don’t eat it. If it isn’t a food that works with your body, don’t eat it. The main thing is to find what works for your lifestyle, preferences and body, and eat more of them. If you happen to already be eating foods on this list, great; begin trying to add more of them.
