Eagle & Condor Prophecy Awakening bridges the Americas by staff reports A noted shaman and condor protector from Peru will join a turtle priest and keeper of eagle medicine from North Dakota and a Mayan time keeper from Central America to present “Eagle and Condor Prophecy Awakening: Activation of the Divine Feminine Consciousness” on Saturday, Dec. 6 in St. Paul. The event, presented by Wind over Fire Healing Arts Center in Rochester, Minn., will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Minnesota Waldorf School Festival Hall, 70 E. County Rd. B East, just south of Highway 36 from Rice or Edgerton streets. A $20 donation will be taken at the door. The ancient prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor arose from many indigenous cultures of the Americas. It said humanity would split into two paths: the Eagle, representing the mind, the industrial revolution and the masculine; and the Condor, representing the heart, intuition and the feminine. The prophecy said the 1490s would usher in a 500-year period in which the Eagle would become so powerful that it would drive out the Condor, represented in the conquering of the Americas by foreign immigrants and the oppression of the indigenous people. The prophecy continued by saying the next 500-year period would begin following the end

of the long-count of the Mayan Calendar — Dec. 21, 2012 — when we would see the Condor and the Eagle come together and fly in the same sky, creating a higher level of consciousness for humanity. Cultures around the world say the Earth is undergoing an intentional evolution of consciousness at this time. “Eagle and Condor Prophecy Awakening” will include authentic indigenous ceremonies presented by: • Jorge Luis Delgado — Jorge is an Andes Shaman from Peru, Quero Yatiri Heritage Keeper, author of Andean Awakening: an Inca Guide to Mystical Peru, and a Condor Protector featured on the television show “Ancient Aliens.” Jorge Luis brought to public attention the Aramu Muru Doorway, an inter-dimensional portal located in the Hayu Marca mountains in south Peru. He is also a founding member of The Brotherhood of the Solar Disc, an Andean esoteric society. • Cedric Red Feather — Cedric is a Turtle Priest of the Mandan Tribe of North

Conscious Evolution for the sake of our future

by Paul Lenda Humanity is now experiencing the birth pangs of a global social transformation the likes of which have never been experienced in recorded history. Never in the history of human life on this planet has there been such a grave and serious threat to the planet that we live on becoming uninhabitable because of the actions of one species that has asserted its dominance. Nearly everyone feels that something big is happening, although the reasons being proclaimed for this are as numerous as the stars, thanks to peoples’ various belief systems, subjective perceptions and current levels of knowledge and information about what is going on. We are now in a completely new phase of evolution, a fundamental evolution of consciousness, that will change everything. This is an intentional evolution, based upon the shifting of our consciousness out of the ego’s domain and into the unity-oriented 8  www.edgemagazine.net

domain. Oneness among all peoples, regardless of how similar or different they may be to our own selves, will be key to this transition. By uniting together as one species, one family, we can not only ensure that we survive, but also that we thrive and transcend the lower realms of consciousness so that we can have a world that is finally filled with peace, love, and happiness (and not just filled with empty rhetoric). Not doing so will seal our fate in experiencing the most soul-crushing of dystopias imaginable. Sign of immense hope There is, thankfully, an emerging worldview arising out of the ashes of the old order and it can be seen as a sign of immense hope for the immediate future. In order for our long-term future to be a bright one we must become unified in seeing this emerging unity-oriented worldview as being the key to a future we can all be proud of. Do we want possible future explorers of

our solar system to come upon our planet, find our artifacts and discover how foolish we were in our planetary and species selfdestruction, becoming a footnote in the history annals of sentient races that brought about their own demise because of a lack of understanding about the interconnectedness of everything? Will we be looked upon as being an “intelligent” species that could have avoided imploding on itself if it only discarded its self-destructive positions of awareness? Let’s not become a footnote in a book of failed evolutionary experiments and become something that we can be proud of. Let’s not forget how many similarities we have. Think about all the social conditioning from the point of birth to the time of death. Look at all the beliefs we amass that divide us as a species and notice how these are not necessarily representative of reality but were learned behaviors that further perpetuated the destructive cycles in human behavior that we see today.

There is a continuously increasing number of people who are realizing the importance of an intentional shift in the collective consciousness of humanity. They feel within themselves that they have a critical role to play in this shift if they wish to see it occur. These people see that the entire socio-economic system has to be changed. When they look around, they see the egoistic expression of greed manifest itself through the haves taking more and more from the have-nots. They see that 13.7 billion years of cosmic evolution did not intend to end here, with the current sad state of affairs. The psychological addiction of consuming and acquiring, manifested through materialism seems to be increasingly infecting more minds in a shorter amount of time. We are at a dangerous position in our evolution where the old ego-dominated mentality is fighting desperately to maintain its current level of power because they are far too invested in the current order to give it all up and make the evolutionary quantum leap into a new humanity. A new humanity There is an increasing amount of individuals who are taking the human race by the hand towards the unity-oriented vision of humanity that is the answer to the current problems we face (since it is aligned with the nature of our environment). These people dedicate their lives to this cause, because they believe so deeply in it and have such an immense love for our human family, and naturally to the rest of life on our planet that is losing up to 100,000 species to extinction every year. The individuals can be called intentional evolutionaries, since they are making it a life goal to help humanity make the shift and transition to the new unifying humanity that embodies the mind states of peace, love, and compassion above all else. They will not allow these things to turn into cliches as has happened in the past, but will live them and become the literal expression of these higher levels of consciousness for the benefit of themselves and of everyone/everything else. As Pierre Teilhard de Chardin had once said, “there is an almost sensual longing for communion with others who have a larger vision. The immense fulfillment of the friendships between those engaged in furthering the evolution of consciousness has a quality almost impossible to describe.” How true this is since the feelings being expressed by these intentional evolutionaries are as genuine and good-natured as can be. There is no ego formulating a hidden agenda or trying to create a subversive attempt in order to get something for themselves. No, they recognize that they have a critical role to play in the conscious-

ness shift that is occurring. They know that if this consciousness evolution is to continue to fulfill its potential, it now must be deliberate, and they feel with the whole of their hearts that it is their responsibility and destiny to ensure this happens. Global cooperation Unity and diversity need not been separate. It’s possible to be united in the expression of higher mind states such as compassion, joy, love, and peace while keeping the attributes which make each one of us special and unique. Cooperation on a global level is possible and, in fact, necessary if we are to make the transition to a new humanity. It seems as if it’s something a child would understand, but unfortunately the actions of some (particularly world leaders in government and industry) demonstrate that this elementary concept is not grasped by the aging remnants of the old world order. War, famine and environmental destruction would be a thing of the past if only the peoples of the world cooperated with each other to bring about such a world. Today, with various crises extending far beyond any one country’s borders, there is a very real possibility for global unity and cooperation to finally become a reality. If the human response to crises such as the ones following Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Haiti, and the revolutions against tyranny around the world tell us anything, it’s that we can put our differences aside and unify to cooperate with each other to create a positive change. Do not become depressed about the state of affairs currently on our planet. There is a massive awakening occurring — with a realization that it is now or never. We need to shape up or we’re shipping out of this world with no possibility of coming back anytime soon. Become an intentional evolutionary and take advantage of every opportunity that may arise in order to promote the creation of a fundamental consciousness shift that is global in size and scope. Make it a part of your life’s purpose to help in creating a critical mass of consciously evolved individuals that will stop the destructive nature of the current socio-economic order. Our very future and survival depends on it. a Paul Lenda is a conscious evolution guide, author of The Creation of a Consciousness Shift and co-founder of SHIFT>, a social community of intentional evolutionaries focused on anchoring in the new paradigm and assisting the positive transformation of humanity. With the drive to be aware of and experience the wider horizon of Reality, Paul has developed an extensive background in the spiritual and transformative elements of life; one that is both knowledge and experienced-based. Paul has spoken at various events including the United Nations and My Spirit Radio, and has had his articles published in magazines and journals around the world. Visit www.Shift.is and www. Winter Solstice & the Reindeer Goddess by Jaime Meyer A Sami shaman once stabbed me in the heart with a reindeer antler. Here’s what happened next. A Sami shaman once stabbed me in the heart with a reindeer antler. That’s how the reindeer came to live in me as a spiritual ally. That was twenty years ago, and since then the reindeer has been an otherworldly teacher and healer for me and a protector when I do shamanic healing for clients and groups. Do I know this sounds crazy? Of course. Have I stopped caring? Mostly. There’s more. Before he stabbed me in the heart, he taught me the story of how the Great Reindeer Goddess travels across the southern horizon at the winter solstice, retrieves the life-giving sun between her antlers and carries it back to the world so that all creatures may jump up and live again. He told me how the reindeer sacrificed her own heart to implant at the center of creation, and it is her heartbeat that pulses life into all creatures. She is the sustainer of all life. She is the rescuer, the resurrector, of life from the forces of antilife as symbolized by frozen, dark winter. These images of the reindeer are so beautiful to me, and though I’m not a reindeer herder of the arctic north, I seem to know this Goddess. In our culture, the Christmas reindeer are all male, and the lead reindeer is a funny little guy with a nose that lights up. I believe the ancient Northern European indigenous image of the goddess carrying the sun back between her antlers sunk down into the Western collective unconscious, and it re-emerged, filtered through the patriarchal lens, to become Rudolf with his red nose, who saves Christmas. For 12 years I’ve guided a Winter Solstice ceremony in which hundreds of people come to drum together and make merry (what I call “Spiritual Wahoo”) and to hear about the reindeer goddess. Then I offer them an opportunity, if they want to take it, to enter sacred time and space, to descend into a deep visionary state and ask the Reindeer Goddess for a blessing. I do this shamanic ceremony because the Reindeer 10  www.edgemagazine.net

asked me to help undo the shrinking force that has been perpetrated on her by the industrial-machine-mind story of Rudolf, the little boy reindeer who helps Santa, the CEO of the northern toy factory manned by low-paid non-unionized workers, stay on deadline for his mass production schedule. Our story of Santa is the epitome of industrial culture shrinking down a profoundly healing otherworldly story in order to support our hyper-consumerist Christmas season. Archetypal psychologist James Hillman calls this substituting “more” for “beyond.” The Sami shaman, whose name was Ailo, a short, dark haired, round-faced impish man who spoke soft English with a thick Norwegian accent, stabbed me in the heart after dancing in a circle around me and chanting a gruff melody for 15 minutes. He stabbed me in the heart with his reindeer antler and a vision of the Great Reindeer Goddess burst open in me. She became one of my spirit guides. Since then she has helped me heal and bless clients and groups. And she asks me to dance with her once per year and tell her story to anyone who will listen. So I have, for 12 years, so far. The Sami’s relationship to the reindeer is as profound, I think, as the relationship between the plains Indians and the buffalo. In a landscape where it is barren and frozen for half the year, the reindeer keep the people alive. She offers her body as food, and provides muscle power to pull a sleigh. Her hides provide clothing, her antlers

tools. The reindeer is the sacred life force, the blessing given to us by the creator, embodied in fur, bones and blood.  In the far north where the winter sun dips below the southern horizon and darkness covers the land for weeks on end, the winter solstice is only a few moments long. But day after day the sun, the source of life that calls the crops out of the ground, and the milk into the animals, creeps up a little farther above the southern horizon. That’s the great white reindeer carrying the sun back from the underworld.   The Sami say that the creator placed a beating reindeer heart at the center of creation. Of all the creatures, she is the one who volunteered her own heart. It is that mothering heart, pumping warm blood throughout creation, which keeps everything alive. The image here is not that different from the idea of “God’s steadfast love” found in the biblical tradition. Except that it’s female, and inside everything, and everyone gets the blessing, instead of male and standing off in the distance witnessing his marvelous work, and judging who is naughty and who is nice, and giving the blessing only to the obedient ones. The reindeer heart beating at the heart of creation is also a similar image that Christians apply at advent and Christmas to the Christ child — that incredibly powerful idea (and so silly to the rational mind) that the creator cares for our wellbeing and so implants the power of love into the foundation of reality, and we can draw on that power — we can direct it up into us, and out of us, to make our lives better, or to help make someone else’s life better, or to just make it through our day in this whirling storm of daily life. Reindeer mate in the autumn, and male reindeer shed their antlers at mating time. That’s a very good idea when you imagine two beasts with horns like tree branches spreading out for six feet in all directions getting into the holly jolly joy of the rutting season. The higher the level of testosterone in the reindeer, the sooner the antlers fall off. So at solstice time, any reindeer with antlers are going to be female.

When I first learned this about female reindeer and the antlers, it turned my mind around about our own Santa story. Santa and the reindeer are not an all-male team as we have been told. Santa is the Great Goddess’s delivery boy. There’s more: In industrial Western culture, Mrs. Clause apparently does nothing but knit socks and make cookies for the elves. But I think she may be another suppressed image of the great Reindeer Goddess, who repairs our wounds (knits the socks) and brings us joyful nourishment (the cookies). This is why, for me, my annual Winter Solstice Blessing ceremony culminates with a group of shamanically trained “reindeer goddesses” delivering a blessing to each audience member as I dance under a reindeer hide while holding two immense antlers. The Reindeer delivers the real gift we seek: the resurrection from whatever darkness has taken from us, the return of the lost life force. She delivers what we really seek: not “pretty presents,” but “Beautiful Presence.” A few years ago The Reindeer gave me this song. It’s modelled roughly after the poetic structure of the Finnish Kalevala, an ancient epic mythic poem. If you want to, you can insert the word “She” at the beginning of each phrase to make it a little more rational. Moves the dark wind through the sky bones. Flows the silence from the unknown. Flickers fire in the cold hearth. Drums the thunder under earth. Breathes the light into the star room. Weaves the ice on winter’s tree loom. Calls the soul back from the deep dark. Aims the antler to the heart.a Winter Solstice Blessing: The Great Goddess Reindeer plays at the Minnesota Opera Center in downtown Minneapolis December 18-21. Info and tickets can be found at www.drummingthesoulawake.co Jaime Meyer’s eclectic background includes earning a Masters’ Degree in theology and the arts from United Seminary of the Twin Cities and studies with a variety of shamanic teachers. His book Drumming The Soul Awake is an often funny and touching account of his journey to become an urban shamanic healer. Twenty of his plays have been produced in various cities. He co-founded the first theatre in the world for the Hmong community and managed it for ten years, mentoring dozens of writers and scores of actors, and playing to 200,000 Hmong and non-Hmong people in various cities, including in refugee camps in Thailand. Since 1983 Meyer has studied cross-cultural shamanism, mysticism and the spiritual uses of drumming from many cultures. The Basis of So Much

An excerpt from God’s Message to the World: You’ve Got Me All Wrong

by Neale Donald Walsch It’s not a small thing to be wrong about God. And if nearly everyone on the planet is wrong about God, it’s really not a small thing. If nearly everyone on the planet has mistaken notions about God, then nearly everything that everyone on the planet is doing will not work the way it was intended. This is because the basis of so much of what they’re doing is found in so many of their beliefs about God. Think not? Think again. Nearly all of civilization’s modern laws emerged from the early rules and laws of some faith tradition. Nearly all of humanity’s moral codes derive from the mandates of a religion. Nearly every political movement and economic theory is based on ideas of justice, right-and-wrong, and basic fairness first espoused by spiritual teachers. Even those who don’t believe in God are impacted and guided by many of the fundamental principles placed into the Cultural Story by those who do. And a striking number of the personal decisions made by billions of individuals across the globe are made within the context of what they believe to be the purpose of life, what they believe happens when this life is over, what they believe about God, and about what God wants. So it’s not a small thing to be wrong about God.

q

Proposition: Not one of the systems we have put into place to make life better on this planet is working. Wait. It’s worse. Not only have the systems we have put into place failed to produce the outcomes for which they were intended, they are actually producing exactly the opposite. I have made this point before, in previous books. I believe it is worth repeating, with emphasis. Our political systems are actually increasing disagreement and disarray. Our 12  www.edgemagazine.net

economic systems are actually increasing poverty and the gulf between the rich and the poor. Our ecological systems are actually increasing environmental degradation. Our health care systems are actually increasing inequality of access to modern medicines and health care services. Our educational systems are actually increasing the knowledge gap. Our social systems are actually increasing disparity, disharmony, and injustice. And, perhaps saddest of all, our spiritual systems are actually increasing righteousness, intolerance, anger, hatred, violence, and war. If the improvement of human life upon the earth were a laboratory experiment, it would have long ago been considered an abject failure. Indeed, an appalling disaster.

q

Not everyone agrees. There are those who believe that humanity is evolving to higher and higher levels of sophistication and achievement, producing a better and better quality of life for all the members of our species. It is possible that they would not, however, be among the 842 million people (one in eight in the world) who do not have enough to eat. It is certain that they would not be the parents of the over 650 children who die of starvation every hour. They would presumably not be among the 20.9 million women and children who are bought and sold into commercial sexual servitude every year. They would also, one imagines, not be among the over three billion people who live on less than $2.50 a day, or the billions who have no access to health care. (Some 19,000 children die each day from preventable health issues, such as malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia.) They would probably also not be among the 1.7 billion people who lack clean water, or the 2.6 billion without basic sanitation, or the 1.6 billion people — a quarter of humanity — who live without electricity.

That’s right. In the first quarter of the 21st century, 2.6 billion people live without toilets, and 1.6 billion without electricity. How is this possible? you might ask. And that is a very good question. It is an especially good question given that humanity imagines itself to be a “civilized” species. To the people in the above categories, the “civilization of Civilization” has not even begun. A planet where 5 percent of the population owns or controls 95 percent of the wealth and resources — and where most of that 5 percent think this is perfectly okay, even as unconscionable numbers languish in lack and suffering — would not seem to be a planet on which a great deal of humanitarian advancement has been achieved. All of this is possible because of the collective values of those people who can do something about it. And where do those values come from? I suggest they derive in large part from the well-intentioned, but mistaken, beliefs about God held by many human beings — including those who do not believe in God at all.

q

Does anybody care that our species has been such a failure — or why? Does anybody imagine it has not been? Does anybody want to know how this whole situation can be turned around in the blink of an eye? Does anyone want to know how his or her own personal life can be changed for the better with the embracing of a single idea? Do you ? December Yoga: Savasana pose Yoga for YOU

by Michelle Ploog After bending, twisting, and moving your body, the final resting posture in nearly every yoga practice is Savasana. The translation is “corpse pose,” which may sound morbid, but it is actually quite beautiful. Corpse Pose symbolizes the death of all before that moment. It’s the death of every belief, behavior, pattern, fear, insecurity, doubt and past experience. Many people say that it is surrendering to the earth, and that it is, but Savasana is meant to be a dramatic, complete surrender of all that you are and all that you have been. That’s the reason it’s called Corpse Pose. It’s not just surrender; it’s death to the past. Yes, you will relax, restore and rejuvenate while you surrender to the earth. Do this with the intention of a complete release. This is where miracles happen. When we have the willingness to surrender who we were, we are able to reawaken to who we will be. It is the death of all that has held us back from being our greatest selves that births the possibility for us to shine. Our past beliefs, behaviors, patterns and fears are actually comfortable for us, because it is what we know. It’s familiar. You know how your story plays out when you keep reliving your past. Letting that story — and all that has developed it — die can be scary because it is unknown. It is a new path, uncharted territory and unfamiliar. It’s the way to transforming into your greatest self. It’s close to the New Year. Now is the time to rebirth and renew yourself. Commit to a daily practice of letting go to become your greatest self. Start new rituals that align with who you are becoming, not who you used to be. My ritual? This is the message I send out before I give myself to savasana: “Universe, I give you all of me. I give up every thought, belief, pattern and behavior to you. I abundantly forgive others and myself so that I can release past words, actions and experiences. I surrender who I have been in order to become who I truly am. I release completely knowing that I will be rebirthed with expanded love, joy, abundance and peace. Thank you.” Savasana is a practice of letting go and trusting that you will not only survive — you will thrive! Lie flat on your back. Move your shoulders away from your ears. Rest your arms a few inches from the sides of your body with your palms face up. Rest your legs comfortably apart with your toes flopping outward. Close your eyes. Let go completely. December horoscope: building from insights Star Wisdom

by DK Brainard December packs more twists and turns than a paperback thriller. Fasten your seatbelt, throw your hands in the air, and do your best to enjoy the ride. The Solstice New Moon supports you in making a quantum leap out of old patterns and into the new. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…You get a stellar opportunity to challenge — and start changing — an old limiting belief about whether life supports you in being your unique self this month. Just in time, too, because a new career direction or opportunity to jump into the next exciting chapter of your life’s work is opening up at the Solstice. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…It’s time to stop fixating on that one burdensome relationship and start casting a wider net. The support you want for your creative project is there for you. It’s just coming from a place you don’t expect. Engage your network of friends and fans and remember that you can’t change someone else but you can change yourself. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…If you’ve been working hard on improving your health and managing your energy, Saturn’s sign change could bring a miraculous improvement in how you feel. Relationships are a huge focus this month and you have some very positive energy coming in to help you understand your needs and desires — and communicate them in a win-win fashion. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…With dour Saturn finally leaving your house of passion and romance, you see opportunities to bring more of your joy and creativity into your work and daily life. The Solstice brings a big relationship shift. You realize you can’t do this alone and you can’t do it with people who expect you to carry their share of the load as well as yours.

Holy Molé

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…Your yearning to feel passionate and enthused about life again gets a big boost in the first half of the month. Set yourself free to live, laugh and love without restrictions. The Solstice focuses you on the nuts and bolts of your life, inspiring you to commit to a systematic approach to healing the money, health and energy issues that drain your enthusiasm. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…Home and family become key points of focus as Saturn moves into your 4th House, inspiring you to heal the old heart wounds that keep you from feeling safe and supported in the present moment. The energy of the Solstice shows you a potential new life path that would enable you to use your talents and be of service — in a joyful way. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Saturn leaves your money house on the 23rd, opening up new financial opportunities. Mars’ move into your house of creativity and romance supports this shift, bringing opportunities to make money doing more of what you love. Be aware: that ongoing challenge about playing out old family dynamics in your relationships heats up just in time for the holidays. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…Congratulations! You graduate from Saturn School on Dec. 23 — you are now officially the author(ity) of your own life. Seriously, take time to honor all you’ve learned and overcome in the last two years. The more you focus on your strength and mastery, the more people show up to pay you for just being you. PS — Good money luck is looking for you. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…Several waves of positive energy flow into your life this month. And Saturn finally leaves your house of karma and brings his solid, disciplined energy into your house of self. How to make money doing what you love continues

to be a big theme. Just remember that you can’t get paid for what you haven’t done. Keep getting started on your dream and sooner or later it will stick. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)…The Solstice New Moon initiates you into your Plutonic power. Expect at least one big ending this month, along with an equally powerful new beginning. You can reap long-term benefits in your career direction, creativity, spirituality and health. But you must be willing to let go of the false self and step into who you really are. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…Be willing to jump into inspiring opportunities in the first half of the month, when energy planet Mars moves into your sign and the Sun, Mercury and Venus grace your 11th House of friends, networks and dreams for the future. A very positive relationship could develop now. The second half of the month urges caution, meditation and reflection. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…So much of how you experience December’s transformational energy depends on how closely aligned you are with your own dreams and desires. You could strike gold with one sweet idea, but you must ruthlessly stalk that old self-sabotage demon. Which, in your case, looks like trying to live up to someone else’s idea of what your life should look like rather than just being your own majestically strange self. a D.K. Meditation as a Way of Life A Conversation with Author and Teacher Rev. Alan L. Pritz by Tim Miejan For nearly forty years Rev. Alan L. Pritz has trained in and taught Eastern disciplines. A meditation and hatha yoga teacher, interfaith minister, spiritual counselor/ coach, institutional spirituality consultant and martial arts instructor, Rev. Pritz has spent years applying inner sciences to outer realities. In 1997, he published Pocket Guide to Meditation, a 95-page overview of the meditation process as part of the spiritual journey. Now, the Twin Citiesbased teacher has released Meditation as a Way of Life: Philosophy and Practice (Quest Books), a volume that is one of the most comprehensive guides ever published on meditation. The author, a student of the Indian yogi Paramahansa Yogananda, distills the teachings of many other spiritual traditions and religions, including Christianity, into an interfaith perspective that will appeal to all seekers of the Divine. Specific elements include the foundations of spiritual practice; the benefits of energy-building exercises, affirmations, and healthy lifestyle regimens; instructions in mantra practice and innersound meditation; techniques for effective prayer; and guidelines to measure inner practice. Rev. Pritz spoke with The Edge about his new book, and about meditation as a way of life, from his home in South Minneapolis. Thank you for sharing your time with us. I particularly liked reading your new book because I didn’t really know a lot of the ins and outs of how you started your practice. Rev. Alan L. Pritz: Well, truth be told, there

are some people who are memoir worthy; I don’t know that I am, but the context was basically that I call myself Joe ordinary — although I don’t know that anybody is ordinary, particularly if they are dedicating their lives to a spiritual practice and doing these things. While most people are enamored of tales that are truly enamorable, if that’s a word — people who seem to have aurora borealis kinds of experiences — here I’m just kind of the guy in the trenches who has dedicated his life in this way over time. There’s some value, I think, for people to see not everybody has to be a savant in these areas to benefit by them.

16  www.edgemagazine.net

REV. ALAN L. PRITZ You introduce your new book by saying that meditation is not a method to enhance health, boost creativity or reduce stress. You say that these may be by-products of meditation, but they are not what meditation is about. So, what is meditation about? AP: There is always a need to define terms,

and as such, my book is specifically rooted in the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda. It comes from a classical yogic perspective. In this sense, meditation is very much a spiritual practice. Very simply put, meditation is the science of learning how to reunite the soul with Spirit. When I say science, it involves understanding the mechanics whereby consciousness and soul have basically descended into incarnate physical form and the very real ways that life force and consciousness can be raised once again to reunite into the omnipresence of Spirit and Source. That is the soul’s innate potential. For most folks, they simply abide on doing a prison term incarcerated, if you will, in a physical form. Much like a giant oak tree is secretly held within an acorn, the soul’s potential is omnipresent and one with Spirit. The science of meditation is the process whereby the life force and consciousness are able to be controlled and directed within the physical and subtle bodies that comprise the human being, done in a skillful, artful manner such that these goals are ultimately reached. You mention your tradition coming from Yogananda, and you also call meditation a science. Can you give people an idea of the length of time that has gone into refining this science?

AP: First of all, let me make a distinction or clarification that may be beneficial. Most people think of Yoga in one of two ways: either that it is Hinduism; or that it is the physical exercise system — Hatha yoga practiced in postures — that is so prevalent in society today. “Yoga” simply means reuniting of soul to Spirit. That is what it means. Yoga is the gift to the world that has arisen out of India and has been refined for millennia. I don’t know actually whether the earliest recorded images and references to yogic teaching date back 6,000 or 10,000 years, but it has been a long time in the works. What’s of value for people to understand is that the kinks have been worked out of the system when taught properly by somebody who, themselves, is a graduate of the process. Yogananda was a spiritually realized master, a graduate of the yogic sciences who was able to teach them, and demonstrate them from his own spiritual attainment. What would you want everyone on the planet to know about Yogananda and why has he inspired you so? AP: That’s a good question. Everybody’s

spiritual journey is very personal — between them and God. It’s kind of like if you have dated a number of people, in time you find somebody who is right for you, and that is exciting. In this particular case, it is very difficult to find somebody of the spiritual level and caliber of a Jesus, a Buddha, and what I consider to be a Yogananda, somebody who has climbed the summit of spiritual attainment. People who are very knowledgeable and influential in the world today in terms of spiritual teaching and familiarity will pretty uniformly cite Yogananda as being a seminal influence in their journey. His book, Autobiography of a Yogi, set the gold standard for people who are being introduced to what a true spiritual master of the Yogic tradition looks like. It shares an exquisite amount of information. From my particular framework, Yogananda stands as a teacher to provide a level of insight into the sciences of life force and consciousness, yogic sciences, and how they can be applied to people regardless of their religious traditions at a time in the world’s evolution when this kind of rapid growth and change in the spiritual evolutionary process is before us. Clearly, there are a number of teachers, great historically and otherwise. One of the values of Yogananda is that he taught in the West for 32 years. He spoke

to the Western audience with the mindset to appreciate their need to know the science behind things, why they work, what the goal is, why these things are of value and relevant, and how they achieve just what they set out to do. Yogananda was a very articulate person who provided a wealth of information that is otherwise obscured and teachings made very relevant for the modern era. What role does meditation play in the awakening process? AP: That’s kind of like asking what role

does water play in growing a garden. The term “awakening” really refers to people becoming more aware of themselves, what life is about, and how they fit into the bigger picture of meaning of life. Meditation directs people into becoming aware that life is a spiritual journey. As people begin to see that and understand that, they are also asking classic questions about their place in the world and they’re beginning to get in touch with themselves as being souls, as opposed to just being bodies. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a Jesuit priest, said we are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience. As people become more clear to this concept and begin awakening to life as being more than just a big, old mystery where you work, eat, have a family and die, meditation becomes the singularly most important vehicle where people are able to turn their attention towards Spirit within themselves as the doorway to grasp Spirit everywhere. It’s comparable to the New Testament telling us, “Seek the Kingdom within.” That’s what meditation is. It’s the doorway to the mysteries of Spirit and self — and this is an internal journey. Human beings are multifaceted beings. We have a physical body, but we also have spiritual bodies. When the mind is concentrated outside in the world, consciousness is fixed in the most dense or material aspect of creation. The mind and consciousness have to be withdrawn. Meditation is the science of how to focus one’s attention, consciousness, and subsequently, life force so that the more subtle realms of existence of one’s self and the universe itself become manifest.

What effect will somebody who begins the process of meditation and commits to it notice in their lives? AP: I tell people that it’s like if you light a fire

and you see a big bonfire across the street and you say, “Yummy, yummy, I’ll want me some of that.” As you start walking across the street, you’ll find that as you get closer to the fire you begin to feel its effects. There is greater light, there is greater warmth. As a person turns within, with meditation, what they are effectively doing is approaching Spirit that is encapsulated within themselves.  Meditation continued from page 17 The nature of Spirit is love, joy, peace, wisdom, power and calmness, and these qualities will begin to manifest more to the individual. Even early beginners will begin to feel that they are less anxious, they are obviously more peaceful, less easily ruffled by life around them. There are qualities of understanding the world around you that need to be wed to the practice in order to make it a full, well-balanced integrated approach. It is not uncommon for people to notice that their relationships with people improve. They feel a spontaneous joy that has no particular basis in an outer cause, as well as feelings of love, peacefulness, a sense of awe or increasing wonder about the nature of existence. These are very early indicators of the results of a meditation practice. How has the practice of meditation evolved in your life? AP: Great question. What I find is that there

is a quality of refinement in my practice that continues to simply refine my understanding and my experience of all these things in which I have immersed myself. Sometimes you see somebody who seems like they are a very advanced practitioner of something. You can get a sense of that, because when you’re with them you feel a certain calmness or they just emanate a sweetness. It’s like a crock-pot dish that is becoming more and more ready to be served. What I found with myself is that these are realities that sometimes, as soon as I close my eyes and I go within, I find myself lifted and absorbed into a state that very significantly impacts my interaction with the world, the words I speak, whom I’m with, and what I’m doing. I’m very much internally changed by virtue of the experience — and my dance with life has become deeper, richer and sweeter, and hopefully of greater service to people by virtue of my knowledge and capacity to share it. In your book, you encourage readers to commit to a long-term relationship with Spirit. I thought to myself, “Isn’t that like making a commitment to yourself, to your true nature?” What do you find prevents most people from making this commitment? AP: First of all, I think that you’re right,

that this is about making a commitment to yourself, because in your truest nature, you are Spirit. We all are. I think that there has to be a readiness. People have to feel the value in doing this, and then they have to be willing to pay the price. You don’t get something for nothing. In this day and age when you walk around and you see people on their various cellphones and devices, everybody has got such instant gratification needs and scattered minds. The concept of just being still and 18  www.edgemagazine.net

dedicating yourself twice a day to a practice is something that many people are just not willing to embrace. There is a pandemic of restlessness. People simply need to become ready for this kind of thing and then embrace what is necessary to make it happen. I like to use relationships as an example. Once two people have been dating for a while, the couple may find value in the relationship that they really want to invest in, so they have to make choices to move their connection from a superficial to a more meaningful one. Corresponding choices in time and energy come to play as people choose to align their lives and orbit around that which is important to them: a person, a spiritual practice, there is no difference. The greatest obstacle to people embracing meditation as a way of life may be a lack of awareness in knowing that this is such a potently powerful thing that could benefit them on so many levels. So there is a lack of access to quality information. I know that sounds perhaps absurd, because there are so many meditation teachers out there, but frankly when I hear people talk about meditation, it sounds to me like they have been given a book or they have had a community ed class. They have not had a very good training and an understanding of the basics. Why is finding a quality meditation teacher important in the process — or can we do it on our own? AP: I think it’s always important, regardless

of what a person is learning, to get the best quality information available. Otherwise, whether you’re studying economics or something more esoteric, the blind are leading the blind. It is a bad math equation. It’s very important that people wind up getting quality information from sources that truly know from their experience what they are talking about. At first, folks lack discrimination and discernment born from experience. The tendency is to find books or teachers that seem to resonate with them. Usually the process is such that people waste a lot of time in byways and pathways that don’t ultimately serve them, or it leads people to refine their process and discover teachers who are better. If a person can find a better teacher right away, great. Books and written material can serve a valuable part of the learning curve. Ultimately, I hold dear the personal relationship, such that you can have a connection with somebody over Skype, but it does not take the place of being present with somebody. People can learn a lot through books and correspondence lessons, but there is a certain element that really comes down to the energies that are transferred individually.

What is the inward teacher you write about? AP: The inward teacher refers to the intui-

tive power of the soul. This is a delicate dance for people, because in spiritual practice what you have oftentimes is the ego warring with the soul. There is a rough core of egotism in individuals. Part of the dynamic of the spiritual practice is the battle between these forces within us. The whole Bhagavad Gita is a metaphor and allegory of the battle between soul and ego, and every spiritual path has that. You can’t be in the world, and of God, mamman versus Spirit. The ego is very canny and it likes to come up with lots of different excuses to justify its likes and dislikes. People have the capacity to justify usually anything that they want. You want to have children, you’ll justify having children. If you don’t want to have children, you’ll justify not having any. All that stuff tends to be of the ego. The inner teacher, in this case, is the soul, which is uncompromising in its relationship with truth. One of the powers of the soul is pure and perfect intuition — the power to discern the truth without the intermediary shift of the senses. There is not a rationalizing process. It is simply the soul’s power to know the truth and to know it directly. When a person becomes more refined in a spiritual practice, they are able to tap this intuitional guidance directly; until such time, oftentimes their insight is murky. While the inner teacher is a very real thing, it also requires time to cultivate and wisdom to know when you’ve got it and when you are not quite there. Thank you for sharing information about your book and your experiences of meditation. Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t spoken about? AP: I guess the only other thing that I would

mention is that I have a business practice as a spiritual counselor, guide, meditation teacher and coach, and I make myself available for people who are interested in having one-on-one training with a person such as myself who can help them with their journey. I also offer and facilitate a Sunday morning meditation service in the Minneapolis area that is just supported by donations. People do not need experience. I facilitate the whole thing. My personal practice with people is a much deeper opportunity for people to work and to benefit themselves with this kind of facilitated practice that I can provide them. a For more information on Rev. WISDOM ON DEATH by staff reports Friends of noted Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh were shocked to learn on Facebook that the 88-year old teacher experienced a severe brain hemorrhage on November 11. For now, he is receiving 24-hour intensive care from specialist doctors, nurses and from his monastic disciples. He is still very responsive and shows every indication of being aware of the presence of those around him. He is able to move his feet, hands and eyes. There are signs that a full recovery may be possible. Louise Reid Ritchie of Tallahassee, Fla., wrote that this is the time to remember Thich Nhat Hanh’s own words about death: “Our greatest fear is that when we die we will become nothing. Many of us believe that our entire existence is only a life span beginning the moment we are born or conceived and ending the moment we die. We believe that we are born from nothing and when we die we become nothing. And so we are filled with fear of annihilation. “The Buddha has a very different understanding of our existence. It is the understanding that birth and death are notions. They are not real. The fact that we think they are true makes a powerful illusion that causes our suffering. The Buddha taught that there is no birth; there is no death; there is no coming; there is no going; there is no same; there is no different; there is no permanent self; there is no annihilation. We only think there is. When we understand that we cannot be destroyed, we are liberated from fear. It is a great relief. We can enjoy life and appreciate it in a new way.” a

DEATH & CONSCIOUS AWARENESS by Salvatore Tardio No matter our differences, accomplishments or failures, how liberal or conservative our values, what religious or atheist belief we hold, science or logic we apply or denial we cling to, death is imminent. How we arrive at that moment is as varied as everything else in our life: whether by the hand of another, resisting with every ounce of one’s being against the pain and anguish of a disease, by one’s own hand or in peace surrounded by the love of others. Death — as the moment of birth — is our common denominator and, at the very least, the ultimate equalizer. Inevitable as it is, it’s a subject seldom embraced within our culture. Unless we’re faced with death or experience the loss of a loved one, we seldom converse or ponder our own demise. It’s a rare circumstance that a conversation of death is openly welcomed. As much as we believe we know about death, it still contains an unknown — and like every other unknown we’ve encountered in life, it harbors an element of fear. Death is the greatest of the unknowns; it has no comparison, no recovery and no second chance. But as macabre as it may be portrayed, death itself is not our enemy. In fact, our avoidance of truly understanding death leaves us at a disadvantage in living life. We’re given the gift of life, and as much as death seems to rob from us everything we have, it gives us the one thing in return that nothing else can. It immensely raises the value of life because it limits our living experience. Without death, it’s just a matter of time before every aspect of living would become repetitive and mundane, merely participating in our existence; not truly living. The timing of death may never seem fair. We may cry, pray and cast out anger to fight it, but without it living would lose its luster and immortality would eventually be an unending burden to bear. Our culture glosses over death; it’s made impersonal and its veracity is tucked away with the very people fast approaching it, nervously

ignored by most and left to be dealt with when we’re forced to in the hopefully distant future. While the younger generation perceives itself as invincible, giving little thought to death, the elder generation has a glimpse of its mortality. That glimpse is of a world without them. It can be heartbreaking to accept — and even with a strong conviction of an afterlife, seldom is the act of leaving life embraced. Fear is our impulsive response until we’re able to come to terms and submit ourselves emotionally and logically — by accepting the inevitable and coming to peace with it. Death’s legacy is the act of bringing clarity and an order of importance to the moments, experiences and choices we make in life. It clearly forces us to recognize the love and gratitude in our life, as well as the regrets that with grace we may still be able to resolve. Death forces a new depth of conscious awareness. What we do between birth and death defines us — and how we define ourselves should always be through moral and ethical choices ruled by our conscience, never by default of mass consciousness or decree of others. Conscious choice will dictate the journey of good living. Conscious awareness is staying true to oneself, always realizing that choices have consequences, good or bad — and the ripple of those choices affect those we love, as well as others well beyond our circle of friends. Comfort of mind is the fruit of conscious choice. What we do when death approaches — whether we resist it to our last breath or welcome it without a struggle — is bound with dignity when we follow our conscience. It’s unfortunate that we can never be more in touch with life than when we grasp that it will be forever lost. Rising to the occasion of death is clearly the most conscious experience in life, and with triumph over fear there’s a profound purity of love amongst everyone privy to this most sacred experience. a Salvatore Tardio is a retired entrepreneur in the construction and retail industries with 30-plus years of searching for a better understanding of humanity’s relationship with our higher source. THANKFUL FOR A MOMENT TO SAY GOODBYE by Z. Lu Alexander My husband, Tim, died peacefully in my arms. A true gift. A true honor. Because we confronted his death with conscious awareness, I’m no longer afraid of dying or living, or of being alone. I feel more peaceful with and tolerant of the differences, incongruities, and contradictions that people present. Nonetheless, I am more discerning and choosy about how I spend my time and energy, and with whom. I now have greater trust in my life, and in my own inner authority and personal guidance system. Quite the journey! Early in our marriage, a psychic informed me that Tim and I had a ten-year renewable contract. That was the first I’d heard of relationship contracts. When I told him, he nonchalantly said, “That seems about right.” We had known on the day we met that we’d be getting married. We married for Love. Our exceptional life together ended five days before our 11th wedding anniversary. When Tim was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, we’d already experienced the deaths of our grandparents, mothers, beloved animal companions, my sister, and his aunt — mostly consciously. Even so, his dying proved the ultimate test of our fortitude. Initially, we went along with the physicians and followed their protocol. However, after a critical surgical mishap, Tim explained how his aunt had dealt with her cancer: prolonged, torturous, expensive treatments with debilitating side effects, and repugnant resistance. With equanimity, my husband was very clear that, while he still had a choice, he wanted to choose quality over quantity. In other words: quit treatments and gracefully accept death. I needed another 24 hours of kicking and screaming before I reached acceptance. We then located a hospice with an open bed to receive him, and knowingly set forth toward our final embrace. I invited family and friends to come say goodbye. Word spread throughout the community. Musicians Tim knew, loved, and had played with — some re-surfacing after thirty years — brought instruments and jammed. It was joyous. A celebration of life lived on his terms. Those final three days, Tim had a foot in each world. Though he lacked words to articulate most of what he saw, he described his experience as beyond glorious. Ignorant grievers dismissed his buoyant countenance as drug induced, but I knew what was real. He was very lucid, and proved it to me. Tim explained that whenever someone called out to him or spoke his name, he could be there with that person in an instant; and, no matter 20  www.edgemagazine.net

how many people called at one time, he could be anywhere and everywhere concurrently. My first night alone at home, I realized I better go through his stuff while he was still alive in case I needed to ask him any questions. During our entire marriage, we had never gone through each others creative spaces. The next morning when I arrived at the hospice, he already knew. He told me that all is known, and all is forgiven. Tim emphasized that the only thing that crosses over is Love. Tim influenced the timing of his departure. I had told him I hoped he wouldn’t die until Friday. He said “I’ll see what I can do!” Thursday morning, the doctors called him the “miracle man”; Tim’s body had been shutting down severely, and they were surprised he was still alive. He mostly slept from then on. Even so, at 9 p.m., a musician begged to come visit; when he walked near the bed, Tim opened his eyes, sat up, and said, “Hi! Have you met my wife?” Then late that night (early Friday) he died in my arms. The clock said 1:33. For eleven years, we’d celebrated the numerology of my birthdate, knowing 1-3-3 is me! Following his death, a rainbow appeared in the clear blue sky. Tim visited people briefly in the bodies of unfamiliar cats, dogs and crows. He blinked lights on and off to say “Hi.” There had been an unfavorable energy in the basement at night; after Tim died, that energy disappeared. As I sat by the river scattering Tim’s ashes, two hawks, two eagles, and two otters came by. Forms change. Interconnectedness, support, and love remain. Life continues…. Author’s postscript: My husband “walked in” at the very moment Toby Dog died in my arms. Eighteen months before we met, Tim all of a sudden sat upright and announced aloud that he needed to “get a job with benefits because he had a wife coming.” None of his family or friends could fathom such, but the following Monday he signed on for a work training program, and that led him to his job at the hospital — with terrific benefits! We had no idea of the specific timing until years later when I found his Train-to-Work diploma. There it was: proof that his aha! moment of 

EMBRACING DEATH in every moment Spirit Leaves

by Janet Michele Red Feather The question is stunning, isn’t it: What happens when we die? Do emotions, thoughts and memories we’ve gathered all these years suddenly grind to a rude halt? On reading this month’s prompt, I thought the editor intended articles about bidding farewell to loved ones without anguish or guilt. On second thought, I realized he could mean coming to grips with our own death. I began contemplating my future passage. The question of the moment for me became, “How can I die in a peaceful, loving frame of mind, without attachment, regret or fear? I have often considered what the transition will be like. All that is not love is fear; all that is not fear is love. How can I stay with the emotion of love and avoid the abyss of fear while contemplating the end of Janet Red Feather? What will there be to hold onto in the giant sea of consciousness when the driftwood of me ceases to exist? Just who is this “me,” anyway? If personal identity is illusory, tied to a matrix — there as merely a kind of “convenience of consciousness” to keep chaos at bay — then what is left behind on passing? If I am truly spiritual, how can I be concerned for even a second that I would not be safe? All I have to do is look within nature. Every year, leaves go out in a blaze of glory. At the very moment they approach the brink of lifelessness, there are hundreds of shades going on in the groves of trees: peach, burnt orange, gold, flamingo and vermillion. Within a matter of weeks, ultimately sepia, burnt sienna, raw sienna, tan, beige and burnt umber predominate. The trees — the stately, wise, glorious, persistent trees — seem to know that passage into winter is cause for celebration. They sing their vibrant color of symphony, even in the face of deadly winds stripping them of their glorious foliage, leaving them exposed to the unknown storms that lie ahead. For all of nature, the advent of dormancy or death is party time. Squirrels scamper wildly, celebrating the change in a stockpiling frenzy.

knowing was the moment Toby Dog died in my arms (my first fully conscious, lovingly aware death in this lifetime.) Toby Dog was a significant part of me being able to keep my heart open and my spirit interested in staying on earth in this body through very dark, challenging passages. So was Tim. We know he “walked-in” because previously Tim would have had nothing to do with hospitals, nor would he be able to keep a hospital job for the thirteen years until he died in my embrace. Toby Dog and Timothy David have the initials T.D. in common, and both Toby Dog and Tim

Birds continue feathering their nests. Bears stuff themselves with fish, berries and roots until they’re bushy and portly. They’ll enter caves and roll over in their lavish fur for a good, long meditative dream state. For humans, our presumably awesome power of mind is, in this case, very much in the way. If we were more intuitive, like the beloved “beasts,” we might have an easier time of it. The other facet on our turning crystal is the recognition of just how small and dense we really are. When we look up at the night sky and remember the stars from which we came, death looks very different. It’s just a word — one that’s become loaded with negative affective connotations. There is no birth, no death; there is only transformation. On our journey back to rejoin Everything That Is, we have so far to go. Death is part and parcel of a very much larger, ongoing journey. The Buddha didn’t panic over the notion of physical death. Initially, the idea was new to Prince Siddhartha. Under the Bodhi Tree, he became enlightened and taught himself a path for accepting the great change. From the Buddha, we see that through meditation, we can raise our frequency higher. This sets our chakra wheels of light spinning fast enough to travel to the next place. We need to change the story. Death should be something we look forward to rather than fear. In the spiritual way of life I learned from Cedric Red Feather, Sam Little Owl, and the Wanagis — the Ghost Nation, death is not fearful. As Cedric has frequently expressed it to me, “We do not fear death; in fact, we embrace it. When we fast, we say we are making our grave.” Once a person allows the false personality to die, the authentic self is free to live. Practice dying every moment. Only in constantly letting go can we truly begin to live fully. a Janet Michele Red Feather, J.D., M.A., has taught literature and composition for 18 years at the university, state, tribal and community college levels. She is currently a tenured English Faculty member at Normandale Community College. HOME FUNERALS: A SPECIAL TOUCH

“Death is not extinguishing the light, it is only putting out the candle at the end of the day.” Rabindranath Tagore “When the last hour is at hand, you will stand at a crossroad. If you have prepared in advance, you will be ready to move on with great ease and confidence, like an eagle soaring into the sky.” Tulku Thondup Rinpoche

in life as in death by Rev. Lisa Severson My mother had a saying up on the wall in her home office that read: “No one is completely worthless; they can always serve as a bad example.” Not that my mom’s passing was a bad example — it was what it was — but I think she missed out on some opportunities to settle things, to make amends or make things right. Her passing was much like her life, which she often saw as difficult. She experienced chronic health problems since her teenage years, and a lot of her energy was put towards managing her symptoms of arthritis and heart issues. For the last 28 years of her life, she was married to an emotionally abusive man whose needs always got put before her own, but she did her best to cover her upset, fear and anger. I had hoped that after she was diagnosed she would make arrangements or settle her affairs, but she was in denial about the whole thing. They were moved to an assisted living facility, where she didn’t have to manage everything on her own — but she still wasn’t prepared to deal with any of her emotional baggage. She refused to talk to the hospice clergy or the workers or me about anything. She always told everyone she was fine. When her health had declined to the point where she wasn’t able to get out of bed, she told us that she was done. She 22  www.edgemagazine.net

by Anne Murphy Bringing funerals back home is remembering our capacity to care for our own. Up until the 1850s in North America, death and after-death care occurred almost exclusively at home. Family and community members took an active role in caring for and burying their loved ones. During the Civil War, soldiers who died often were far away from home and unable to be returned. Embalming was a way to stall the decomposition process and make it possible for soldiers to return home. The funeral industry was born — and for the most part, funeral directors continue to be hired to do the work we once did together. As we continue to raise our awareness to life, it seems only natural that we would raise our awareness towards

refused any further medication. She knew full well what that would mean; she was on diuretics to keep her heart and lungs from filling with fluid. It wasn’t going to be a comfortable passing. Twenty-four hours later, she became delirious and her passing began. She had seen her life as a struggle most of the time, so I guess the struggle she experienced in her passing wasn’t a surprise — but it was quite remarkable. She started saying “no” over and over as if she didn’t want to do something or she wanted something to stop. It was like she was fighting with someone. She said to me, “I can’t see it! Help me see it!” So I asked her to see a bridge and see the people on the other side waiting to welcome her. I started describing it in detail and told her that her dear friends and family were there waiting to hug her. A bit later she called for two healer friends of ours, so I called them and held the phone to her ear so she could hear them. One of them started singing to her — and after a minute or so she barked, “Stop singing!” Shortly after the last call she said, “Drum!” I asked if she wanted me to play her drum and she said yes, so I played it until she ordered me to stop. All this time, she was in and out of her body and she was fighting and sweating. It was like she was passing through different levels and needed something different each time. Next was “Amethyst!” So I put her amethyst cluster on her heart. Ten minutes

death. A home funeral is one of the ways we can say goodbye with loving awareness. A home funeral occurs when the body of a loved one stays or is brought home after death, cared for by family, friends, and others who offer their support. Oftentimes it involves washing, dressing and laying the body out for viewing before final disposition or a service at another location. With proper cooling methods, home funerals can last hours to up to three days. It’s up to the loved ones to set the pace, allowing themselves the time to absorb the loss. By participating in a home funeral, we co-create a space that is a reflection of the life and loss through our own voices, hands and hearts. a Anne Murphy is a Home Funeral Guide. later she said to take it away, and then she wanted her tuning forks to be played. After that, she was finally able to rest but she was still moaning and saying no occasionally. About eight hours after this started, she said, “I can see it now. I’m going. Bye.” I told her I loved her and she said, “Love you, too.” She didn’t talk any more after that. She was gone, but her body carried on for another few hours before it too finally stopped. I’ve thought about that night so many times since she passed, about how the experience seemed so indicative of how my mom was in life. She had a big personality and was quite funny and very well liked, but deep down she was angry, scared and often upset. Even though she was into spirituality and had many opportunities to take some steps to heal her emotional body, she avoided it or wanted someone to do it for her somehow. She struggled in life — and she struggled in death. Witnessing my mother’s passing has given me a look at how I want to respond to my life and my eventual death. I will strive for peace. a Rev. A MESSAGE FROM ASCENDED MASTER SERAPIS BEY by Shirley Moore “It is necessary to cast off all the material illusions of the world in order to achieve a Conscious Death while still incarnated. When you stand naked in the wilderness, divested of everything, you will find your Power. Examine your mental, emotional and spiritual attachments to determine where your limiting beliefs may be holding you hostage. Absorb this concept and prosper. “This is not to say that you cannot have family, friends, children, travel, money, health, etc. while incarnated. It simply means that you have a preference for some of these things but ultimately, you are whole without any of them. You are free from the constraints that current day cultures put upon you as a measure of your worth. You can Be in this world but not of it. You can Be in-joyment of this world and in appreciation of various material goods and are whole with or without them. You can have preferences for some of these things but you are not dependent on them for your strength. Your power source comes from an infinite space that knows no limits. The Universe is continually

expanding to meet your level of awareness. Please ask from the perspective of abundance, knowing that you will receive. “A suggestion to begin exploring conscious dying from a personal perspective is by asking yourself how you arrived at a thought, pausing before speaking, listening to your words and paying attention to your actions. Ask for your soul to come close and assist you in this process. Pay attention! Use your senses, seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting to guide you to greater awareness of yourself. You will then be in a position to assist others on their path to conscious dying. Remember, for every ending there is a new beginning with glorious lessons to learn if you remain aware. “From where I sit, you are well on your way and I invite you to visit me on the Inner Plane at night where I will instruct you in examining the esoteric elements of this process and assist you in achieving your Soul’s purpose in the incarnation. Go Now!” a Shirley Moore is a hypnotherapist, intuitive and spiritual coach based in White Bear Lake, MN. She is a teacher, healer, leader and resource.
