by Tim Miejan Like clockwork every evening about 9 p.m. my two cats stand and meow at the front door, wanting one more chance to go outside before morning. I go to the door, pick up one cat and step outside.

Leaves crunch underfoot as I walk a short distance down the front walk. I take in the night sounds. I breathe in the cool late-October air. I look upward and recognize the Big Dipper, see a jet airliner blinking across the night sky and then glance around for the moon.

I begin to wonder: What is my cat experiencing here, now, as we stand in the dark?

Perhaps catching some slight movement by something small in the nearby lawn. Perhaps twitching with excitement when a bird flies from tree to tree. Does she know that the homes, the cars, the pavement and the trees that we see are not all there is? That it all goes on seemingly forever, land and water spinning as the planet rotates around the sun? Does she realize the infinite expanse of space above us?

I carry the first cat in and then repeat the process for the second. Then we are all inside.

I lock the door and secure us into our box that we call home, our space that now seems so finite, walls and windows enclosing us and separating us from the outer world.

One commercial soon blends into the next — and one by one they try to lure me back into the illusion that what I see is all that matters and it’s all I really want.

I now sit in peace and close my eyes. I relax my body, and with intention I journey into the heartspace within my being, a place where only stillness exists. I sit near a mirrored lake reflecting my inner light. Nothing here is like the experience with the televised noise and manufactured comforts of home.

Nothing here has an agenda.

Nothing here demands everything from me without giving something back.

I send a small breath, a gentle wind, into my inner tranquility and I release all thoughts of anything, and I let go of all conjecture that I know anything at all. I really don’t, in the grand scheme of things.

I think I know what I’ve been taught to believe, but carrying around other people’s ideas is beginning to weigh me down.

I release it all.

Sitting here, in this space, I gaze upon the reflection of the light on the still lake, re-connected with who I truly am and with the energies of love that hold everything in place.

2nd annual Walk for Peace returning to Mall of America The second annual Beyond Belief Walk for Peace — a 1.5-mile march for peace amongst people of all differing religions, ethnicities, cultures and traditions with the common mission for peace — will take place from 8-9:30 a.m.

IN MEMORIAL Dr. Masaru Emoto (1943-2014) Dr. Masaru Emoto gained worldwide acclaim through his groundbreaking research and discovery that water is deeply connected to our individual and collective consciousness.

Dr. Emoto became ill in Shanghai, China, while on a speaking engagement tour. He was in critical condition for several weeks before he was declared stable enough to be air transported back home to a Tokyo hospital. He passed at 12:50 a.m. on October 17, with his wife Kazuko at his side. His last word was Arigato (“Thank you” in Japanese). He used to say, “Life is love, which is a gift from God and parents, and death is gratitude for going to a new dimension.”

In his various books, the first of which was published in 1999, Dr. Emoto introduced the novel idea that water not only reflects the physical world around it (as when we use a placid lake or 8 www.edgemagazine.net

pond as a mirror), but it also reflects the consciousness of the beings surrounding it.

By exposing water to a particular word or piece of music, freezing it, and photographing the ice crystals formed, Dr. Emoto demonstrated that from beautiful words and music come beautiful crystals, and from mean-spirited, negative words come malformed and misshapen crystals.

Masaru Emoto was born in Yokohama, Japan, on July 22, 1943. He was a graduate

of the Yokohama Municipal University’s department of humanities and sciences, with a focus on International Relations. In 1986, he established the IHM Corporation in Tokyo. In October 1992, he received certification from the Open International University as a Doctor of Alternative Medicine. Subsequently, he was introduced to the concept of microcluster water and Magnetic Resonance Analysis technology. He realized that it was in the frozen crystal form that water showed us its true nature.

Dr. Emoto was the author of the best-selling books Messages from Water, The Hidden Messages in Water, The True Power of Water and Love Thyself. His work was presented in the movie What the Bleep Do We Know!? and also Water the Mystery, produced in Russia in 2006.

IN MEMORIAL Dolores Cannon (1931-2014) Dolores Cannon, a past-life regressionist and hypnotherapist who specialized in the recovery and cataloging of “Lost Knowledge,” died on Saturday, Oct. 18, following a recent injury. Her career as a hypnotherapist spanned almost 50 years, and she spent three decades investigating and writing about concepts ranging from life and death, reincarnation, the origins of humanity, UFOs and extraterrestrials, the prophesies of Nostradamus and a wide variety of other topics.

Dolores Cannon was born in St. Louis, Mo., in 1931 where she lived and grew up with her family until completing her academic studies in 1947. She married her husband Johnny in 1951, a career U.S. Naval man with whom she spent the next 21 years traveling all over the world to accommodate his various overseas assignments.

She raised her family as a typical navy wife throughout the 1950s and 1960s until 1968 when several major events ultimately changed the course of her life forever.

As a result of injuries sustained by her husband and his confinement to a wheelchair, Dolores and Johnny relocated to the hills of Arkansas.

Once her children had grown and left home to start their own lives, Dolores decided to begin practicing hypnosis with clients in the late 1970s. Although she lived in a small country town with a very small population, she was able to successfully attract a diverse range of clients due to her desire to take on any case, regardless of the circumstances.

Her early work was heavily focused on reincarnation, which got her acquainted and comfortable with the concept of time travel. Many of her early clients described scenes from past lives where they had lived in past decades, past centuries and even past millennia in a variety of social settings in different locations all over the Earth. then spend weeks researching the characteristics of life in the locations and time periods her clients had described living in to verify the authenticity of the results she was recording. It was through this vigorous verification process that Dolores ensured the authenticity of her results.

Having conducted sessions with thousands of clients, recording the same results time and time again and spending vast amounts of time and energy verifying the authenticity of her clients’ past lives, Dolores eventually realized that the memories of past lives and the additional information she was receiving through clients was being supplied by a much larger, more powerful and more knowledgeable portion of her clients’ selves, which their conscious minds were completely unaware existed.

The city of Berkeley, Calif., was the first to symbolically rename Columbus Day to “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” in 1992 to protest the historical conquest of North America

by Europeans, and to call attention to the demise of Native American people and culture through disease, warfare, massacre and forced assimilation. Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and South Dakota do not celebrate Columbus Day, with South Dakota officially celebrating Native American Day instead.

Letters Dear Editor: My name is Victoria Irons Graves. For years I have read The Edge and enjoy and learn. I live and work on the Red Lake Indian reservation in northern Minnesota. I was a bit offended by Cedric Red Feather’s comment (Interview: October 2014) about Native people being the most prejudiced people, as his wife had a bad experience at a powwow, in California of all places. I have been to many reservations and many powwows, and perhaps Mrs. Red Feather said something that offended someone. Who knows the story? Native American people or Indians, come in all colors and backgrounds in the 21st century. I have also learned from many Native spiritual advisors about the Medicine Wheel concept, which embraces all Nations. As a spiritual advisor and a person who is to be evolving and leading in this crazy world, I think that Mr. Red Feather has said something that could actually lead people to believe that we Natives are the prejudice. In all the articles from The Edge, I have never heard anything like this and feel that Red Feather should think about his own life.

A response from Cedric Red Feather, Mandan Turtle Priest: Dear Victoria Irons Graves: I did not speak for all Native Americans in the interview: I only spoke from my own experience. Each individual will have a totally different perspective, and that’s all right: it doesn’t make it right or wrong. What I meant in my comment is that what I have seen, witnessed and experienced is that Natives are always putting down other tribes, mocking white people and telling them what to do.

As a Traditional Person, I don’t judge anybody at all. When I was asked a question, I was saying this is my life, because I am a Native person. As a kid growing up, I heard people make fun of other tribes. Later, I head them say people don’t have the “right” for this or that. I embrace all people. I’ve learned a lot: I’ve learned so much from people who have lied about me and judged me. I don’t have enough space in this letter but I will give you one example.

I went to a sweat lodge in Minnetonka in the afternoon.

There were a couple of sweat lodges there, and anyone can use them. I was there with a few friends, and people were in the sweat. We parked a distance away and were sitting on the tailgate of my pickup singing a few songs. These people came up to where we were and said angrily,

“You be quiet. You people are so loud. I am a sundancer and an elder and we’re having our sweat.” We were far away from where they were. I told my friends that if my mother had come out of the sweat, she would have said, “It’s good to see you. Where are you people from?” and “Have a beautiful day.”

In the reference I made to Janet, we were at a powwow in California and I suggested she borrow a belt to make her regalia look more complete. I wanted her to feel proud of herself in the arena. Her friend let her wear a belt she had made herself with a beautiful drop and conches. Just before the Grand Entry, a Southern Cheyenne woman came over and acted like the culture police. She chided Janet and told her she had no right to wear that belt, because she was not from that woman’s tribe. Janet never said anything negative to anyone at powwows or ceremonies; in fact, Janet gently told the woman she did not wish to upset her and took off the belt.

Talking of a Traditional person is like this. I was taught

by Sam Little Owl and Ralph Little Owl. They told how a person’s identity is his spirituality, his religion. I’ve heard lots of people talk about tradition at powwows, then when they die, they all go back to Christianity,

to their Christian roots. When Ralph died, we buried him in a buffalo robe. We sang traditional songs for him. We smoked his pipe and gave him the Last Meal and we gave him the Last Sweat. The ceremony was totally traditional, because he had lived a traditional life.

Your heart — your spirituality — is who you truly are. My Uncle Richard Mandan never ever went to a single powwow during his life and yet, he was the most traditional person I have ever known.

I value everybody, and I don’t judge anybody — because I know from my experience that we are all connected. I love this country, very much so. I was wounded in Vietnam and got a Purple Heart. I do ceremonies. I help people. I just helped someone in Rochester who had cancer; but I never charge people for what I do. I don’t make vows or promises to anyone. I always have that freedom to do what I want. No one pulls my strings, and I don’t dance for anyone.

I have looked at my life, as you suggest, and I realize I have learned from everyone — those who are mean and ornery, as well as those who have embraced me. As a matter of fact, I have adopted several children who are white, Chinese and of different nationalities, because I don’t see skin color anymore.

I hope I have answered your questions. I don’t speak for any Native American or tribe. I only speak for myself. I’m not involved in anything political and I’m not out to change the world. My only concern is the spiritual. We all wish for good health and happiness, and I wish these for you. I’m glad you took the time to write. I’ve never been to your reservation. If you ever come to the Twin Cities, maybe we could have coffee together.

block that stops us from seeing that which we don’t “believe.” It was only after a series of cellular healing sessions, which literally shook out all of my own limiting beliefs and stagnant energy that no longer served me, that I began to see, hear, and feel Spirit and the Light on an alarmingly frequent basis. Alarming because suddenly a whole new part of life revealed itself and it felt somewhat disorientating for a while.

Now is the time when we are all beginning to awaken to the Truth, and part of this revelation is that you, I, and every other life force on this planet and others, is made of Light.

Awakening our Inner Light

by Keidi Keating All of the most reputable and respected saints, sages and mystics of both now and years gone by have frequently discussed the importance of the Light in our lives.

So what is the Light? Am I referring to the light that radiates from a random bulb dangling from a ceiling, or perhaps the transparent daylight that emanates from a glorious sunshine? The answer is neither.

The Light I am speaking of is essentially the Light of God, the Universe, All That Is, or whatever name you’d like to give it.

An orb of light When I awoke in the middle of the night to see an orb of brilliant white Light hovering at the side of my bed, it wasn’t an ordinary

light that my eyes are accustomed to seeing.

This was different. It was magnificent, made of Light beyond my logical comprehension.

However, the truth is that we are all made of this very same Light, and this Light is what threads all of Life together in one unified tapestry. It’s the same Light that those who have had Near Death Experiences (NDE) or Out of Body Experiences often refer to. It’s usually described as a never-ending ocean of pure Love. And that is God. The reason we typically can’t see the Universal Light with our eyes is because we’ve been conditioned through the centuries (and yes, even in past lives that register deep down in the energetic of our body’s cells) that such a concept is absurd and doesn’t exist. And so we have a mental

Expressions of God The significance of this information is that if the Light is God, and we are made of Light, then that must mean we are God, right? Basically, that is correct. We are all expressions of God. Every single one of us contains the energy of God. He expresses through us, as us, and when we pass on, we plunge back into that very same ocean of Love and Light and experience the blissful sense of Oneness again that NDE survivors speak of. It’s common for them to say, “I didn’t want to come back to Earth,” as they remembered bathing in Love having escaped the freedom of that prison we call the human body.

Witnessing the orb of Light in my bedroom wasn’t the only time I’ve seen such a radiant Light. Another night I saw a complicated code of fluorescent Light made up of untold numbers and symbols float towards me and pass into my “being.”

To this day I have no definitive idea of its meaning, although I sensed it was perhaps related to the new DNA that shamans and elders describe.

I’ve also spontaneously left my body on several occasions, and caught glimpses of such an omnipresent Light on these adventures, too. However, it’s important to note that there are differing levels of light, and one of these levels is known as the “magnetic light,” which the majority See Light on page 12

Light from p. 11 of psychics and healers tap into. The Light of God is beyond that and it cannot be manipulated or controlled. On my out-ofbody travels I’m sure that for the majority of the time I was not bathing in the Light of God, but rather in other neighboring dimensions of the Universe.

So if it’s true, beyond just believing (and for me it is), that we are made of Light and we are all little fragments of God energy, what does that mean for us and our lives in general? It means that, like God, we are all powerful creators. I’m not suggesting that destiny does not play a role in the unfolding of our individual journeys, but we are all responsible for the events of our life, and how we choose to perceive and react to those events. We are all able to manifest “good” things by thinking “good” thoughts.

We literally attract what we put out there in the energy of our everyday thoughts. One trick is to witness what you are thinking, and realize that “you” and the mind are two different things. You are not your mind. You are a soul.

God speaks to us all God certainly spoke to me when the orb of Light appeared in my bedroom and told me to put together a Book of Light after I endured a spell of profound depression and “asked” for a sign about my life purpose.

And so I’m now passing that story on to you, plus some ways in which I learned to reawaken my Divine inner spark, in the hopes that, like a game of Chinese whispers (telephone), it continues from one person to the next — from one spark of Light to another.

So how does one begin to reawaken their Light? Well, there are several ways, but here are some to begin with:  Meditate daily to get out of your head and into your spiritual heart.  Chant ancient Sanskrit hymns, such as the Kundalini Stavah, or recite Om Namah Shivaya, or any other words that resonate.  Do a form of Yoga daily — find a kind

So if it’s true, beyond just believing (and for me it is), that we are made of Light and we are all little fragments of God energy, what does that mean for us and our lives? that feels right for you.  Get into the habit of asking God for what you’d like, and always put your request into the Light for the highest good of all concerned. That way, you’ll remain unattached to your request and, as an act of unselfishness, you’ll want everyone involved to benefit for their own growth and betterment.  Remember the Universal laws and spiritual teachings of Karma, the Law of Reciprocity, the Law of Cause and Effect, the Law of Polarity, the Law of Relativity, the Law of Attraction, and so on.  Always remember that Loving comes first. Love everyone, even your enemies.  Give away first that which you’d like to receive.  Develop a closer relationship with God through prayer and letting go of desires — have enough faith to let God guide your life.  Eat healthy and nutritious foods, and drink fresh organic vegetable juices regularly.  Witness your thoughts from your state of being, not from your mind.  Be prepared to heal your past emotions when the opportunity presents itself. By healing yourself, you’ll help to heal the world at large.  Think positive thoughts and be aware of what you are thinking.  Be grateful for everything that happens in your life, even those things which you don’t feel are the most favorable. See everything as a blessing.

Almond Biscuits

It is packed with protein because of the almond flour and eggs. You can make these into “cookies” by adding a thumbprint on the top and adding your favorite fruit-juice sweetened jelly.

Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups almond flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp sea salt 1 tsp lemon juice 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce 2 eggs Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Mix dry ingredients and wet ingredients in separate bowls and then combine. Mix thoroughly.

dormant for 30 years, my entire life has flourished exponentially. Magic sprinkled from the heavens and I began to see the beauty — the God energy — in everyone around me.

Bad Mood? One simple thing will shift it

You’re in serious debt. You always feel like there’s too little time and too much to do. Your home life is chaotic and your work life is overwhelming. Your family is overbearing. And your best friend just moved across the country.

Bad mood? We’ve all been there.

Psychotherapists are full of ideas for how to improve it — go outside, play your favorite song, hit a pillow, assume control, ride it out.

But there’s something that’s simpler and easier than all of these things. You don’t need to go anywhere, find anything or wait for it to pass.

All you have to do is change your breathing.

Ninety percent of us suffer from breathing problems.

We breathe too shallowly. We breathe through our mouth.

We breathe only with our chest and not our diaphragm.

We hold our breath during difficult moments. We hyperventilate.

And it’s this type of breathing that keeps us locked in a “fight or flight” mentality.

It keeps us stressed, tired, unmotivated, depressed, anxious, forgetful and unhealthy. It keeps us feeling like we’re never quite where we’d like to be. When we are breathing rapidly and shallowly, through our mouths and only engaging the upper part of our chests, we are operating in the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight). When the sympathetic nervous system is activated, it stimulates and “locks in” stress. Every time we hold our breath or breathe labored and intermittently, due to a negative emotion or situation, we lock that stress into our body and mind. This conditions the body to engage in this fight or flight behavior.

It also activates our adrenal glands and builds tension in our physical body.

Smooth, steady, even breathing stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and teaches the body to lock in relaxation. Taking smooth, deep breaths increases Qi (“chee” or life force energy), health, stamina, mental clarity and the ability to relax.

Obviously, it will be helpful to engage in plenty of relaxing activities that will activate the parasympathetic nervous system, because operating in this system the majority of time is the key to optimum health.

The more we can find ourselves in the space of “resting” rather than “fighting,” we will discover that the benefits are astronomical and sometimes subtle. In this space, moods are elevated, the immune system is stronger, cortisol levels are decreased and physical and psychological well-being are increased.

We live in a society where we are praised and rewarded for hard work and struggle. It is evident in simple, well-known phrases, such as “no pain, no gain” and “nothing worth having is easy.” Because of this mentality, millions of us are stressed out and overworked in jobs we don’t love. We replace our dreams with the “security” of a steady paycheck. We look for big challenges and chases, while forgetting the most basic and fundamental necessity we need to function properly — abundant breathing. We often fail to see the peaceful and easy road as an option at all.

Several years ago, I hiked the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. At the time, it was 2,173 miles and took me five and a half months to complete. It is a stunningly gorgeous trail, as well as a perfect example of hard work and struggle. As a former competitive long distance runner, I was always looking for a great physical, and ultimately mental and emotional, challenge. November Yoga: Garland pose Yoga for YOU!

by Michelle Ploog Garland Pose, or Malasana, is a posture that brings forth a sense of oneness and connection. We are connected to the earth through our grounded stance and to universal love through our hand position.

Our hands are an extension of our hearts, and anything they touch infuses our heart’s energy into it. In Anjali Mudra, the hand position in Malasana, our palms press together to unite and embody the continuous circle of loving oneness.

In Malasana you are centered in love’s energy. Therefore, you can clearly channel your expression of love for this world.

Our heart can speak as our guide in this space.

When I heard my heart’s message of oneness, loving kindness, equality and peace throbbing to be expressed, I knew See Yoga on page 19 Mood from p. 13 difficult challenges daily, like dealing with bad weather, water sources running dry and hilly or rocky terrain.

I thrived on these daily tests, and I didn’t have to look far for them on the Appalachian Trail. The trail itself is ridiculously difficult. If Native Americans or early pioneers had wanted to migrate from Georgia to Maine, they would have taken an easier and more direct route and stayed closer to the rivers and lakes.

They certainly would not go up and down the same side of mountains, nor would they find the most rocky or difficult route. Because our society has become familiarized with hard work and struggle, the trail has become more and more difficult in the last fifty years.

This is a perfect example of how we live our lives. How many of our own “Appalachian Trails” do we create in our lives? How much easier can we make our walk in life? And how much better off would we be if we draw awareness to our breathing and utilize it to its full potential?

The Master Peace

I was sitting at the edge of my bed as a young child, surrounded by my stuffed animals and dolls. Then, all at once, my perception shifted from thinker to witness — and my focus zoomed in on one word. It was the word stick.

I know what you are thinking: “Stick? Not Om Shanti, or HU, or alleluia?” Yep, it was just a simple word with no spiritual emphasis according to the world of mantras, prayers and chanting.

The word suddenly became like something I had never even heard or known before. It was a sound in my mind, and if I chose, I could speak it through the efforts of my brain and vocal chords. So I said it out loud. The word had texture and brilliance, but still didn’t seem to mean anything in particular to me in the moment. There was still a faint distant remembrance in the background that knew exactly what the word meant, but it had now become the lesser mind and there was a bigger mind that was rediscovering the magic of a simple word.

In the next moment I looked down at my hand. This was my hand, but it was much more than my hand: it was life and, much like the stick, it was nothing, yet everything all at once.

Then, I realized that if this was a foreign hand, then who was I? I was Erin. I repeated my name several times in my head, as if to attempt to understand the meaning, yet in complete peace as to the pure beauty that lie in the form that I was inhabiting. I was Erin, but even greater was the expanding awareness discovering Erin and that was a miracle.

Looking back, I can clearly see I had experienced an enlightened state, which actually meant nothing to me at the young age of 6. I went on with my childhood and developed my ego as most children do; looking for love, looking for acceptance from the outside world, battling fear and tolerating the growing pains of adolescence. I briefly visited this inner state of brilliant awareness from time to time. It was surely what had balanced a darker state of self-perfectionism and depression. It was a sort of bouncing between worlds. Each time it was as though I had been dramatically thrust into “real world,” because I had no one to teach me that, in fact, the “real world” was not what I was experiencing on the outside. It was those quiet moments of utter amazement for the miracle of my being, and life around me, that were real.

My journey has been like a magical puzzle, each piece an offering from the higher dimension of the transcendental. What started as rare, but powerful, metaphysical interventions in my childhood led me to a place of understanding and heightened awareness in my adult life.

In an attempt to understand what I was going through after a Kundalini experience at the age of 30 ignited multi-dimensional senses, I began to educate myself and seek answers by researching the mystics of the past and present and began to comprehend the shifting consciousness and how it has manifested itself in my life.

It has been like a bouncing ball, jumping from one extreme of depression and suffering to surrendered states of beauty and spiritual awakenings that produce very intense and real teachable moments. As each passing day goes on, I connect the dots in my life, seeing the tiniest details as beautiful sign posts reflecting my inner states of consciousness. It is as though the eyes of my soul have been peeled entirely open slowly over time, sometimes still closing and drifting off to

sleep, lost in the matrix and other days so wide awake, seeing crystal clear 20/20 beyond space and time.

The ability to evolve beyond our conditioned programming dwells within each living creature, and expresses itself differently for each individual journey.

That is the beauty of our uniqueness, and if we choose to learn from one another, we are united by the deeper bond of spirit, the one. Like any talent, what we do with it is up to us — and so with my mysterious drive to share my stories, I believe there is a greater story to be told, which is not only my story, but yours, too.

Nothing belongs to us; it is a gift passed down through us. Whether we are doctors, lawyers, actors, artists or waitresses, this is our ability to express that which moves us and chooses us individually to express different dimensions of life. Unique energy is necessary to complete the greater task, which is to realize peace itself. But, I must tell you that I am not the teacher. The teaching is the teacher and the author simply the vehicle. With each word that I write, I am filled deeper and deeper with love, and so, if for nothing else, this message has already provided its function.

It is the same for you and your story. If you are lead by authentic creativity, by the peace of the universal mind, you will begin to see magic all around you.

Whatever fills you up with passion is your destiny and shared purpose with creating a loving universe that reflects back to you what you have discovered deeply inside. It is a delicate balance to live your passion, yet not allow it to dominate your mind and create a false sense of identity through your life’s purpose.

Instead, the balance is found in the joy produced in the very act itself, which frees you from expectation of the outcome and places you directly in the present moment.

All energy affects itself, and even those who are not aware of this sacred law are channels for enlightened living. But because you are aware, you become the creator of the world in which you live, and by recognizing the sacred connection in all circumstances, you inspire a more loving outer world as a direct response to your inner state. Going even deeper, we will find a dimension behind and beyond all dimensions; ultimately, it cannot be called a dimension because it is where all dimensions arise, and so it has no name, no address and no existence.

When you are so caught up in anxiety, frustration, jealousy or misery and you want to be free, you will find before you feel or think anything, you are still and empty. From that simple space of nothingness, you will be filled with its infinite peace.

To get closer to it, listen to the advice within the beating heart. It is the wisdom that speaks no words, but through its pulsing life carries us softly away from our confusion and suffering. It is the calm opening before the words are formed, language is spoken, art is created, music is played, and action is taken. Creating Healthy Relationships

by Rachel Stewart, Ph.D. As souls, we choose to be born into families (quite often ones that challenge us) and communities in order to come to understand and experience ourselves more fully. We develop relationships that have major roles in what we choose to experience in this lifetime — and nearly all of what we do in life involves our relationships, either with others or with ourselves.

Yet, we are not really taught how to have healthy relationships with others and ourselves, nor are we taught to be aware of and accountable for our own energy and habits in relationships. I often hear people make excuses for their friends and family members as to how people behave in relationships. Meanwhile, many people are significantly challenged by the dynamics of their relationships and the destructive energy that has transpired between people in their life or within themselves.

We come up with different outlets, techniques or tricks on how to deal with the results of this destructive energy (i.e. meditation, exercise, venting, energy work, affirma-

tions, etc.). And while these are all extremely useful ways for clearing and dealing with the blocked energy that gets stuck in our system as a result of our relationships, we are dealing with the end result.

In other arenas, such as schools, communities and medicine, people say that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This applies to our relationships, as well. We do not have to wait until things are out of control or until our physical, mental and emotional bodies start screaming for help. We would be better served if we put more of our efforts into becoming aware and more conscious of how we are using our own energy with others and ourselves, rather than pointing our finger at others.

What are we doing with our energy? Are we drawing energy from other people? How do we feel when we are around certain people? Are we expecting others to give us their energy? If a source gets dried up, do we quickly turn and look for a new source? Do we allow ourselves to be a host for others? Do we give and give See Healthy on page 19 november 2014 the edge 17

Six Keys to finding one’s Soul through Environmental, Social Change

by Patricia Damery Why do 23 percent of Americans still not believe in climate change? This is the largest percentage ever of climate change deniers and it comes at a time when 99.9 percent of climate scientists say climate change is occurring as the result of human activity. What is going on? Why are we not initiating policies and practices shown to be effective in changing the impact of human activity on global warming?

According to the World Health Organization, depression has reached epidemic proportions.

Are climate change and soul loss related?

Solastalgia, a term minted by Australian philosopher and professor Glen Albrecht, is “The pain experienced when there is recognition that the place where one resides and that one loves is under immediate assault…a form of homesickness one gets when one is still at ‘home.’” [www.nytimes.com/2010/01/31/ magazine/31ecopsych-t.html] The term has spread from its origin describing the despair of residents of southeastern Australia when their beloved land was destroyed by coal mining. It applies to the pain of Native American Indians who lost the land they loved, to Inuit populations today as the Arctic melts, and perhaps even to Central Valley California farmers who cannot plant crops due to drought.

Solastalgia is characterized by depression, sadness, anxiety and rage. It attests to our innate (if unconscious) longing for a place we have loved. Nineteenth century wide-scale immigration into North America, which violently displaced native populations on this continent, has played a large part in this. The emigrants’ ruptured ties to their homeland may account for their willingness to take land from native people — who loved it and knew its needs and seasons. Love of place apparently became a luxury people could not afford.

Instead, value was/is measured in dollars.

Sixty-four years ago, analytical psychiatrist Carl Jung stated, “Every man should have his own plot of land so that the instincts can come to life again.” He believed that our physical and emotional health is tied to a relationship to the earth.

When we see great changes in the environment caused by our actions, and when these changes appear to be beyond our

personal control, we suffer. Denial is a primitive but very effective defense: This is not happening! Because, to really feel what is happening is painful. We can laugh at the ostrich sticking his head in the sand, but deep down we all use this defense in the face of overwhelming change. The good news is, denial is a stage of grief that allows us to organize ourselves as we move into acceptance and then action.

But staying in denial of a situation can be deadly. In the case of global warming, it allows us to believe economics justifies the practices, which continue to contribute to the dire state we are in. And then there is helplessness: Many feel the situation is of such magnitude it no longer matters what we do.

This could not be further from the truth. It is critical that we act. Recent studies on trauma and post-traumatic stress show that for our mental health alone we need to do something. We need a healthy relationship to the earth. To not have that is reflected in a kind of soul loss experienced as depression, anxiety, and lack of connectedness.

Here are six things you can do to help, not only yourself, but also the larger global problem:  Love the land you are on. Spend more time listening to the rustling leaves of the tree outside your window or watching the ants marching along the

sidewalk. Leave your cell phone inside.  Learn what plants are native to the land you live on, and plant them. Studies show native plants bring back native birds and insects and help restore a local environment. Do not overlook your roof! Roof gardens cool cities and invite birds and beneficial insects.  Learn to listen to what your unconscious delivers. Write down your dreams each night. Dreams are a shoreline for reclaiming what is not consciously acknowledged. Learn to gain guidance from them, and use this guidance in what you do.  Eat at least one thing a day that comes from the earth outside your kitchen door or from your roof top. Know where the rest of your food comes from, and eat as much locally grown food as possible.  Don’t be afraid of your sadness or grief for the losses that you witness, but join others in making a plan about what you can do. Make sure it is a plan you do out of love and enjoyment versus fear and duty. You will be doing it for a long time!  Get to know your neighbors, human and non-human. Environmentalist and forester Aldo Leopold said that we cannot heal our relationship with the earth without healing our relationships with each other, and that we cannot heal our relationships with each other without healing our relationship with the earth.

Albrecht also studied areas of environmental activism in which there had been successes and found a strong sense of interconnectedness. He called this “soliphilia”: “the love of and responsibility for a place, bioregion, planet and the unity of interrelated interests within it.”

It is the responsibility of each of us to work with each other and the earth to restore what we have harmed. Action is critical and it is effective. Ultimately, we need to acknowledge that we are responsible for our relationships and the dynamics that exist. Unfortunately, I do not see many people taking ownership of their choices. Adult situations remind me of childhood when blaming others is commonly heard: “Well, he started it!” or “She said it was okay!” Well, it’s not okay!

We are all being called to be responsible for our own energy and how we interact with each other and ourselves so that we will live more harmoniously on a spiritual, mental, emotional and physical level.

We need to start by taking an honest look at how we interact in our relationships and take responsibility for ourselves. Do our relationships enhance our world or detract from it?

High-Altitude Alchemy Itineraries

The reason for my first venture to Peru arose not from logic but from direct spiritual guidance. I was not informed of the purpose of my visit or that I would subsequently form a company to usher mystics into the sacred energy of the Andes.

During the first trek, I had a spontaneous, life-changing encounter with the consciousness of Apu Salkantay — Apu, in Quechua, the ancient language of the Inca, indicates a revered being and Apu Salkantay is a 20,500-foot massif northwest of Cusco. Standing near the base of the peak,

my heart burst with a torrent of emotion as a force embraced me and cracked me open. It felt natural to fall to my knees, bow my head to touch the ground and commit to serve.

It’s logical to assume that the fiercest challenge of trekking in the Andes is the reduced level of oxygen. My first ascent into the fierce mystery of the high-altitude environment was an encounter with an intractable conflict that has no relation to the atmosphere but, rather, a legacy of tour companies that have customized treks into Western-style forays into the Peruvian landscape. I concluded that Peruvian trek companies had responded with a vacation product designed to serve their Western clientele whose goal is to rapidly conquer the mountains and add them to their list of accomplishments. I was dismayed to discover that the pathological modern addiction to

Big business During subsequent meetings with guides and travel agencies, I discovered that trekking in the Andes has become intransigent at many levels. It is big business. After numerous conversations, I succeeded in adding additional days, as well as two periods of sacred silence. Concluding that I had accomplished my objectives, I announced the trip. Nearing the end of the eight-month wait for our departure to Peru, I was advised that our guide had cancelled.

Dismayed that our carefully constructed team had just lost a very important member, I asked the agency to locate an experienced guide. I left for Cusco in trepidation that the pilgrimage was being severely compromised. Upon my arrival, I telephoned the new guide to discuss our trek. His constant interruptions advised me that I would be working with a big ego.

As we descended from the first summit of 16,000 feet, our group was loosely scattered along the route — tiny dots of color nearly lost in the immense landscape of the mountains. The youngest in front, traveling quickly on strong legs, followed far behind by the eldest, laboring to breathe the thin air, stepped gingerly on the rocky trail.

reconnect with your sacred intimacy

by Shirley Moore What does Spirit want you to know about sacred Intimacy?

It is your birthright. You know that, don’t you?

Without it you feel frustrated, unfulfilled and off center. With it, you feel that the world is your oyster. When you are disconnected from it, you are looking outside of yourself for peace, for joy, for all the answers. But, it’s all inside of you, waiting to blossom. It’s been there all along.

Inside you, deep in your heart, you will find a sacred place, your sacred heart and its connection to Spirit. Developing this connection will help you find the intimacy you crave and help you make sense of the multitasking world. Tapping into this heart-space and allowing it to expand over and over again, allowing in this heart light, will bring you to the doorway of sacred intimacy within yourself.

Be on the receiving end of this generous gift. It is a gift you give to yourself. It is waiting for you to discover it. With it you are a Divine Master. It allows you to Be in no space, no time, no worry.

You can begin to experience this by remembering the last time you held a newborn baby or a favorite pet. There is an unconditional love that is exchanged in these activities. Thinking of them can bring you back to the same state of being as when you initially experienced them. Remember that feeling. Hold on to it. Expand it to encompass all of you. Allow it to encapsulate you and allow it to expand beyond you. Practice calling this into your awareness throughout your day and make it the last thing you bring to mind before you drift into sleep.

You are gradually learning what this sacred intimacy or unconditional love is all about and how to lay claim to it as your own. You can sense it, feel it, see it and sometimes even hear it. Gradually, you develop an inner knowing that you have tapped into something rare, unique and special. Allow yourself to own it.

After establishing your intention to allow this into your life some attention is needed. Focus on your heart. Breathe in and out through your heart and feel the energy exchange. Continued attention to this heart space will expand your awareness and provide you with a deep sense of peace, connectedness and awareness. Once you have mastered this within yourself, you are ready to start sharing this feeling of absolute abundance with others.

Ultimately, you will find a community of people to share in the giving and receiving. embrace the ‘good’ kind of selfish in your relationship

Busy doesn’t begin to describe life at our house, or probably yours, either. One would think that, as a spiritual teacher and psychic, I would know better than to succumb to it. Even I would assume that my house would be immune somehow from the craziness of the “to do” list. And yet, it isn’t.

My partner and I look at each other regularly, usually when we’re running out the door to get somewhere that we’re supposed to be already but aren’t because we got tied up the last place we were, and ask ourselves for the thousandth time, “When are we going to quit with the running?”

Then, off we go to one more event, one more class, one more…something.

My schedule demands a lot of both of us. My partner joins me for many of my work events, but he also has a fulltime job to fulfill, in addition to being present for my evening events. I see clients all day, and then I also host or

attend work events in the evening, or on weekends. We both have children, family and friends. We have a great life, but the “busy” seems to never end.

I remember when I was single and didn’t understand when married couples complained that they didn’t have time together. I thought that was impossible. “You live together,” I said.

Folks, I now get it. It’s hard to create time for one another when we’re all working, running kids, errands, extracurriculars, running businesses, school functions, taking care of elder parents, and, if you’re lucky, have a social circle, as well. It’s exhausting to think about much less live it.

So, we’ve come to that place in our relationship when we started being selfish — the good kind of selfish, the one that says “if we’re not good, then nothing else really matters.” It took us a bit of time to make “us” a priority.

I’ve worked with many couples in my practice who have had to make the same adjustments, but after a couple months of making things like “date night” a priority, they can’t imagine what they did without it.

Take time to go for walks, or bike rides together. Yes, exercise helps us feel connected, as well. It’s a great

time for us to share our day, while we walk off the stories.

I often tease my partner that we’re leaving the garbage of the day out on the street as opposed to dumping it inside our home. It really does create a more settled, comfortable environment in our home.

The energy of our space feels clearer, and accordingly, so do we.

Often I will sit with clients amid relationship issues and talk to them about their priorities, their values, what’s really important to them in their lives, and ask them, honestly, “Are you living according to those values?” We know we love our partners, spouses, significant others, call them what they are, but recognize that they’re our witnesses in life. These are the people who see our best and our worst, and love us regardless. Making them a priority — and seeing ourselves from a framework of what is best for the relationship IS what’s best for us — is crucial.

I often use the analogy with people that relationships are

like infants: if you feed them, nurture them and attend to them, then they grow into beautiful, healthy, enduring life forces. If, on the other hand, you ignore them, constantly putting them aside to attend to other things, they will wither, and die. Attending to one another does require attention, but once you develop the habit of giving to each other, of nurturing and loving your relationship, the depth and magnitude of what you can accomplish, and the joy of the journey together, is unimaginable.

OUR SACRED JOURNEY: CONNECTING WITH THE DIVINE IN EVERY WAKING MOMENT Spirit Leaves

by Janet Michele Red Feather The prompt this month concerns “sacred intimacy.” Divorced times three, intimacy for me meant disappearance — the classic “urge to merge.” Energetically attuned to each of my partners, I would vanish into them. Now my quest is to recover the Sacred Soul within. For me, the true quest is for union with the Light within.

I was raised with the white lacy dress dream. A person who lives alone is labeled dismissively. She’s deemed single, divorced, desperate. Cedric’s wisdom teaching on the matter is that it “takes intelligence to live alone.” I agree. When I refrain from medicating with television, cell phone or DVD, I eventually come face to face with the daunting prospect of creating my own existence — moment by moment.

Some will say this sounds like a rationalization. I must be “avoiding” the couples issue. That is entirely possible. As an empath, my urge is to help, nurture, save. That is what draws me to another in a close connection. Ram Das talked of the “Yog” of relationship.

“Yog” is the prefix meaning “union.” Ram Das said we can cultivate union with The Beloved, as in the Devotional realm, or enter into sacred union with a romantic partner. Either way, there’s the “work” to be done. The “work” concerns a life focused upon spiritual growth.

I ponder this dilemma constantly. The Spiritual realm I am in, that of the Singer, is a devotional realm. I can enter into a sacred union with the Creator — the Beloved — or I can pursue the drive toward complete oneness with another human being. Love, in any of its forms, is elevating; it becomes other than beautiful when we become possessive, controlling or smothery.

Part of my own growth and identity is the recognition that we can love everyone, friend and stranger alike. If we are all a part of Oneness, why would we choose one individual over another? I could just as easily fall in love with a man or a woman — both are masks of

the beloved, manifestations of the Creator. But what would be the point? Why would I favor one human being over another?

In the movie Sherrybaby, a woman (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal) struggles to rebuild her life after years of substance abuse. She falls in love with an Indian guy (played by Danny Trejo). The two connect at an AA meeting and forge a bond. Sherry becomes jealous when she discovers her new date is seeing another woman. They argue briefly. Soon, she calms down and climbs protectively under his strong, tattooed but tender arm as he stirs a pot on the stove. He just says in a soft reassuring voice, “Nobody owns anybody.”

Much as we hate to admit it, this is the higher truth we strive for in Sacred Intimacy. It’s a seeming paradox: to truly love someone and be with someone, you have to be willing to let him or her go.

It’s just like the old pop lyrics from Sting, “If you love somebody, if you love someone, set them free. Free, free, set them free.”

So I have searched my heart and soul for some truth and peace on this issue of Sacred Intimacy and how we need to make time for it. To me, intimacy is not something that takes place only on vacation or during a commercial. I seek the Beloved — the Divine — in every waking moment. I pray, reflect, meditate. When I’m not doing that, I am slowing my own growth through involvement in frivolous pursuits.

Wise Tibetan masters have urged for centuries, “This human life is precious. We have an opportunity to work on our karma.”

Every day, with folded hands, I thank Grandfather for another Holy day of life. It’s not a ritual: I’m grateful to be alive. My journey keeps expanding. If another person ends up beside me sipping cocoa on a brisk winter night, that’s beautiful. If not, I’m not sad or regretful, and I’m never, ever, lonely. I am one with the Intelligence that created me. I have things to express through words, song, and artwork. I hope my words offer light in another’s path. a

SACRED INTIMACY in a multi-tasking world is CHALLENGING, FUN

We have competing needs at the different levels. This complicates determining who we are and what we want. We multitask in an attempt to balance or fit in our competing needs.

Carol McCormick: How do we maintain our individuality and continue to build sacred intimacy as a couple? We each have diverse, sometimes incompatible, needs.

your Seventh Crown Chakra, so you push meeting our spiritual purpose.

Jerry: By recognizing that we are multidimensional beings, we can continually seek to balance the competing needs within ourselves, while recognizing and accepting possible competing needs in the other person. We are stronger and more balanced together with our different strengths and weaknesses.

Carol: My Fifth Throat Chakra is very active. I talk a lot to develop ideas and create new ones. I treasure your awesome listening skills, Jerry!

Jerry: My Fourth Heart Chakra is open. It helps me be an empathic listener. However,

I have more of an internal orientation than you do, Carol. I have a strong need for a big portion of the stimuli in my life to come from my own internal process: my own levels, plus additional interdimensional contacts.

Carol: I’m the opposite — an extrovert who seeks lots of social contact. My creativity thrives on constant outward stimulation.

Jerry: I’m stronger in my Second Chakra.

So I tend to emphasize the sexual aspect of our coupleship.

Carol: That’s true. I love cuddling.

However, I have a lot less passion for sexual climax than I did when I was younger.

how to become the sacred couple

by Taylor Ellwood In this crazy modern world, being in a relationship with a partner sometimes comes second or third in priority to work, or whatever else is occupying your attention. However, it is possible to maintain a sacred relationship in this modern world of multitasking, but it requires an intentional choice on the part of each person in the relationship.

To make that choice involves coming to an understanding about your relationship: You have a relationship with yourself, with your partner, and the relationship itself. That’s three relationships contained in the concept of a relationship.

When you understand this about relationships, you recognize that a relationship takes a lot more of work than might be apparent initially.

When you first meet someone and fall in love, the relationship is easy, because you have that new relationship energy, that passion and lust which carries the relationship through the first year. However, after you’ve been with someone for a while, the newness of the relationship wears off and the real work begins. You actually have to get to know each other and build a relationship that lasts beyond that first year of initial bliss. This is the time when you create a sacred relationship with your partner.

So let’s consider what the elements of such a relationship are:  Your relationship comes first all the time. If you want your relationship to be successful, you need to put it first at all times. This means that your partner and your self are the top priority.

There may be times that you’re on a deadline or in a zone of artistic flow and chances are your partner understands that, but in general the relationship comes first because you each know that to make it successful you need to put time to each other. For example, when my wife comes home, I stop working, and focus on her. The work will still be there when I get back.  You are affectionate with each other consistently. Relationships where consistent affection occurs are relationships that last, because that affection creates bonding within our neurophysiology. Making time to cuddle and hold each

other, kiss, etc., is essential for a happy relationship.  You do activities together. It’s important to go out on dates and do something fun, but it’s also important to do housework together, cooking together, and other various activities.

Not all activities may be exciting, but in that time together you will talk, connect and deepen the relationship you have. And nothing says love so much as knowing someone is willing to do their fair share of the work around the house.

As for dates, make time to do different activities and go on adventures. Don’t stick with the same routines, but instead actively engage each other with what interests each of you. By making the choice to do something, you spice up your life and relationship.  Read books on love, finance and spirituality together. Reading books on these topics can help you have proactive conversations around them, instead of reactive conversations. A sacred relationship is cultivated by design, so reading books together, discussing them together, and actively implementing ideas from those books will help you develop a stronger relationship with your partner and make the relationship sacred because you are actively putting effort into it.  Communicate, communicate, communicate.

When there is no or poor communication a relationship can’t be sacred. Communication is the life blood of a relationship. When your partner and you are talking regularly, you are working through issues, sharing each other’s burdens and triumphs and building a life together. Make time to talk each day, even if it’s just to check in with each other about the day’s events. And when you are communicating, make sure you listen as well as talk.

A sacred relationship is based on the investment you and your partner put into it. Ideally you are equally invested in the relationship. If one person is more invested than the other, that person will eventually resent the other partner.

legs became increasingly leaden as we entered the vast amphitheater where no evidence of human kind marred the treeless red hummocks that majestically swept up to meet the base of the brilliant white glaciers flowing down between the crags of Apu Ausangate. Our tiny human forms merged with the divine energetic that invigorates the formidable landscape, hearts full of an ancestral memory of a life spent in harmony with Mother Nature and the Divine.

Carol: We heal each other of our past traumas and our physical ailments. At the same time we create strong emotional and spiritual oneness.

Invariably we hug and kiss at the end of a healing session. And we both sleep very well that night.

Jerry: One of the things that unites us is that we both have a strong spiritual focus for our lives.

We are very vulnerable with each other sharing our personal experiences or weaknesses and fears. For instance, to tell someone else about when I’ve had a very personal contact with God, other people might just say I am being crazy or egocentric. I can trust that you will not judge or reject me for telling you.

Carol: Because we are older and semi-retired, we can express our spirituality without the pressures of career building and child raising. We are free to spend a lot of time talking things over when we wake up in the morning.

Jerry & Carol: Other things that bring us together: We set a goal of six kisses a day and say “I love you” often and mean it. This forces us to make contact and show appreciation for the other. We try never to leave the other without a goodbye kiss. We take turns reading books out loud while cooking or cleaning. We watch movies together. We babysit and play with our grandkids. We attend spiritual services, classes, discussion groups, and workshops and participate in a Synergy Group Meditation.

An alien language My premonitions were accurate. Our guide was a member of the very trek model I was trying to subvert. When I explained my intention to him in detail, he responded as if I was speaking an alien language. I gazed to Apu Ausangate and petitioned the mountain for a method to make my case without anger and was given a detailed map for resolution. I called all the members of our group into the main tent: the trekkers, guides, horsemen, cooks and porters. I felt the mountain with me as I described our vision, and without blame, pointed out where choices were not supporting the trek. I placed the challenge in the center of our collective and invited each person to help forge a solution. The following day was markedly different.

Trekking at 15,000 feet can feel like methodical suffocation. A gentle acceptance of all physical distress is requisite — a patient witness to the body’s struggle that requires both attention and indifference. It is this very neutrality that prepares for a birth through the portal of discomfort into an expansive oneness, a dissolution that allows rebirth — the negredo of alchemy. Consciously choosing to surrender to difficulty is in opposition to our imagined Western privilege as master of our universe ruling from a throne of comfort at the top of the evolutionary pyramid. It subverts the

paradigm of control that has created a devastating separation between Nature and man. Through daily prayer and ritual, we petitioned the Apus, Mother Earth, the Masters, God — Life itself — to draw us nearer to the heart of Creation where we might learn what is required for our healing and the healing of our Earth. The conflicts I felt with our guide required the same alert surrender to nurture the necessary adjustments.
